How does someone get started in politics with David Earl Williams III

David Earl Williams III was born on January 8th, 1984, in Evanston, Illinois. He grew up, however, on Chicago’s North Side neighborhood of Rogers Park and then later Uptown, where he lived with his mother and two sisters. He also has an older brother. He is related to former Democratic Oklahoma State Senator, Eugene E. “Gene” Stipe.  He is of mixed ancestry, that being – Black, Irish, Native American, French, German, British, Ashkenazi Jewish, and southeast Asian.

He was educated at Joseph Brennemann (1990-1995) and Louis B. Nettlehorst elementary (1996-1998), and Nicholas Senn High School (1999-2002). From 2000-2001, David was a member of Senn High School’s Academic Decathlon team. He helped his team advance onto the regional competition which was a first in the schools’ history. David would graduate from Senn High School in 2002 while on the Honor roll. 

Immediately after graduating, David joined the U.S. Navy. He served as a Deck Seaman for the first two years during Operation Iraqi Freedom, then as a Logistics Specialist managing over $2 Billion dollars worth of aviation equipment and over 25 personnel for his remaining time. He was stationed in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Japan from 2002-2006 onboard the U.S.S. Cowpens (CG-63). With his time in the U.S Armed Forces, he has traveled all over Asia and the Australian continent along with the Middle East. David was decorated eight times for his service until his Honorable Discharge in mid-2006.

Later in 2006, he began his studies abroad, eventually graduating from Lethbridge College located in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, after taking courses in General Studies and Criminal Justices. During the 2008 U.S. Presidential election, he would support & vote for, Barack Obama via absentee ballot.

In 2010, David returned back to the United States taking residence in his birthplace of Evanston, Illinois and shortly thereafter began his participation in the Chicago chapter of WeAreChange (2011-2014), a nationwide political activism group. During his time with WeAreChange, he protested Corporatism and took part in several anti-war demonstrations against the U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2014, David ran for the U.S. House of Representatives, Illinois’ 9th District as a Republican. He lost the primary by 1,427 votes on March 18, 2014. In the summer of 2018, he announced his candidacy for Alderman in Chicago’s 48th Ward as an Independent. He would go on to receive 16.25% (2,415 votes) of the vote during the 2019 Chicago’s Municipal election.

 Many who are close to David see him as a “Renaissance man”. In the past, David was a male model/promoter for Urban Offering clothing and Pink Avenue Models. He also starred as an extra in the music video, “Desert Spring Rose: Film Noir Vignette”, directed by Scott Feigen.

Besides his “day job” as a medical logistics specialist, David has volunteered in disaster relief efforts with Convoy of Hope, assisted in crisis intervention initiatives with National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the Pro-Privacy activist organization known as Restore the Fourth, an animals rights activist with Chicago Alliance for Animals to ban horse carriages and replace them with pedicabs. He has also closely worked with the CPD Youth investigation division to help implement new ways on locating missing loved ones quickly and efficiently.

Outside of his political endeavors, he has volunteered (house-to-house canvassing and phone banking) for the following campaigns: Jesus “Chuy” Garcia’s 2015 Chicago Mayoral campaign, Lori Lightfoot’s 2019 Chicago Mayoral campaign, Andre Vasquez Aldermanic's campaign for the 40th ward, Illinois for Bernie 2020 Presidential campaign (Independent Vermont, Senator Bernie Sanders), Biden/Harris 2020, and Hoan Huynh for State Rep in Illinois 13th district campaign.

He is a former Freemason out of Evans lodge 524 (2013-2016), formerly provided veteran service outreach with the American Legion of Morton Grove Post 134 (2014-2017) & Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks lodge 1526 (2016-2018). He currently serves as the Co-Chairman for Unite America Chicago’s Chapter.

He is a nondenominational Christian, an author of the LitRPG book series titled VALOR TALE, and his hobbies/interests are: amateur voice-overs (particularly for Youtube user, Yeti112’s Resident Evil & Metal Gear Solid parodies series), working out, long-distance walking, swing dancing, video game music, Cats & Dogs, All Elite Wrestling (AEW), Vodka & M.U.G.E.N.

Virgil shivered as the room suddenly became chilly around him, his hair moving in the wind.  Closing his book, he leaned back in his chair, waiting for the fingers he knew he would feel.  

“I’m getting predictable it seems.”  Logan hummed, moments before his hands were on Virgil’s shoulders.

“Maybe I was just expecting you.”

Logan chuckled softly, his hands sliding down Virgil’s arms, face pressing into the side of his neck. A shiver rolled down Virgil’s spine as he tilted his head to the side.  Pressing his lips to Virgil’s neck, Logan smirked at the soft whine Virgil let out, hands grasping at Logan’s arms.  

“More like wishing I would show up.  Or maybe, begging is the right word.”

“Lo, please?”  Virgil whined.

Pressing another kiss to Virgil’s neck, Logan slid his hand into Virgil’s hair, holding him still.  Virgil tried to keep his breathing steady as he felt Logan’s fangs slide over his skin, sending goosebumps flying over his skin.

As the fangs pressed into his neck, Virgil bit his lip, his cock throbbing between his legs.  Logan groaned as Virgil’s fingers pressed into his arms, tangy taste on his tongue.  

“Fuck, Logan.”  Virgil moaned, fighting to stay still as Logan’s fangs slid out.

“Always so needy after I bite you, wonder if you would come just from me feeding on your inner thigh.”  Logan purred.

“Please, yes, bite me there.”

Logan groaned as Virgil pulled away and stood up, grabbing Logan’s hands and pulling him against him.  Kissing him deeply, Virgil whimpered at the taste of his blood on Logan’s lips, pulling at his clothes.

“Slow down, beloved.  I’m not going anywhere.”  Logan teased.

Virgil huffed softly, stepping back and pulling his own hoodie and shirt off, throwing them to the side.  

“Don’t give me that, mister.  Think you can leave on work business and then not get me all riled up when you get back.”

“Just say you missed me.”

Growling at the smirk on Logan’s face, Virgil reached up to where the small holes in his neck were, pressing against them.  Bringing his red coated fingers to his lips, Virgil sucked them clean, Logan watching him with rapt attention.  

“Virgil.”

Doing it again, Virgil stepped back towards the bed, popping open the button on his pants.

“What’s the matter, Lo?  I thought we were teasing?”

Virgil gasped as he suddenly found himself on his back on the bed, Logan perched over top of him.  Leaning down, Logan licked the drips of blood off Virgil’s skin, pressing his hips against him.  Moaning as Logan ground against him again, Virgil jolted as he heard the ripping of fabric.

“Such a brat.”  Logan growled, sliding down Virgil’s body, taking the ruined pants and underwear with him.

“W-who, me?”

A soft whine slipped out as Logan pushed his legs open wide, nuzzling against his inner thigh.  Holding Virgil’s legs tight in his grasp, Logan leaned in, sinking his fangs into his skin.  Virgil’s moans rang out as Logan sucked, hands grasping at the pillows as he tried not to buck into the air.

“Fuck, Logan.  Please.”

“I’m sorry, I thought the deal was to see if you could come just from this?”  Logan smirked.

Virgil whined as Logan licked over the two small holes, before kissing his other thigh softly.  Every time Logan pulled back slightly, Virgil felt himself tense, ready for another bite, but each time it was another soft kiss.  

“Logan, Logaaaan.”  Virgil whined.

“What’s the matter, beloved.   I thought we were teasing?”

Virgil groaned at Logan’s tone, squirming as much as he could in Logan’s tight hold, cock bobbing against his stomach.  Logan chuckled, the sound sending shivers down Virgil’s spine, pressing his lips to Virgil’s skin again.  Opening his mouth, Virgil’s words were cut off as Logan pressed his fangs into his thigh, a loud moan filling the room.  

“Please, please?”  Virgil begged, reaching down and tugging on Logan’s hands.

Sipping his fangs out, Logan pulled his clothes off, tossing them behind him before sliding up even with Virgil.  Kissing him deeply, Logan moaned as Virgil wrapped his leg around his hip, rocking their cocks together.  Pulling Virgil’s closer, Logan’s face pressed into the side of his neck, panting softly as he matched Virgil’s movements.

“Bite me again, please?   Bite me.”  Virgil breathed, sliding his fingers into Logan’s hair, holding the back of his head.  

Nodding slightly, Logan pressed a few kisses to his skin before sinking his fangs in again, making them both moan.  Virgil’s hips jerked as he came between them, holding Logan tight as he sucked a mouthful of blood.  

“That’s it, Sugar.  Want you to come for me, fuck.”

Logan pulled back fast, reaching down and wrapping his hand around his cock, jerking himself in short fast strokes.  Kissing Virgil again, Logan moaned against his lips as he fell over the edge, adding to the mess on Virgil’s stomach.  

As their kisses slowed down into just soft presses, Virgil wrapped his hands around the side of Logan’s neck, pressing their foreheads together.  

“I missed you.”  He smiled, watching the soft blush on Logan’s cheeks appear.

“I missed you too.”

“Are you able to stay, or.”

“I do plan on staying, if you’ll have me.”

Virgil smiled wider, laughing softly as he pulled Logan into another kiss.  

“Oh, I’ll have you alright.”

“Was that a sexual innuendo?”

“Yes, yes it was.”  Virgil hummed, kissing him again.

MH: Mermay 2021

The school year, for me at least, is FINALLY coming to an end with very few finals and me coming home the day after my last class. That being said, expect more art in the summer! Anyways, here is my drawing for the famous trending Mermay, Monster High edition.

The seventh, and final of the original 2010 franchise, feature-length film, Great Scarrier Reef was a favorite of mine because it starred my top favorite ghoul, Lagoona. I loved her, as well as Frankie, Draculaura, Clawdeen, and Toralei's, Ghoulfish designs, and the blend of deep blue and hot pink looked creeperific! All that was in the inspiration of this Mermay drawing, and I had to include Lagoona's pet prianha, Neptuna! With all the blue in Lagoona's Ghoulfish design, the pink Neptuna is a nice contrast. ☺️

This is yet another favorite drawing I did of the year, and possibly one of my favorites ever. I am always happy whenever I get to draw something related to Monster High, because it makes me feel nostaglic while letting my creative juices flow. I had SO much fun coloring Lagoona, mostly her hair, makeup and tail. I did look at a reference photo for Neptuna, and I think she's a little bigger than she should, but I'm still very pleased. I did add a little extra detail to Lagoona compared to the original, mainly the hair tie and I gave her pink pearl earrings! This is making me wanna go back and rewatch Great Scarrier Reef now! Too bad that I didn't bring the DVD with me to school. At least I'll be heading home in a little over a week from now. 👀

When approximately will the next sanders sides be out? Very good question! Uh, we are aiming this for a late September release, that’s what we’re all working towards.

Favourite musical you have been in or just favourite musical in general? This is really tough, I can’t decide. I’m between Rent where I was in the ensemble, Peter Pan where I played Slightly Soiled, which was just one of the lost boyos — boyos? Boys — and, uh, Into The Woods where I played Cinderella’s prince and that’s where Roman’s first costume came from.

Are you ever gonna due your hair purple again? I loved it! Yes! I miss the purple hair too.

Do you love me? *laughing* Yes of course! I do love me.

What would each of the sides’ reaction be to seeing the Grand Canyon? *speaking very quickly* Roman would be revelling that we made the journey, Patton would be marvelling at the memories being made, Logan would be telling you to look at these fascinating signs for important information, Virgil would be telling you to ‘get back from those cliffs!’, Janus would be telling you to take pictures to make it look like you’re next to the cliff, ‘for clout’, and Remus would be like *Remus voice* ‘you could push somebody and get away with it’.

Also when will we get more Picani, I miss him? You and me both, Bri, and honestly with the amount of amazing cartoons that have come out recently *sighs while smiling* yeah, I am a-hankering (?) to get back to Emile!

How have you been doing, like really? Mental health is important as you teach us: I feel like everybody’s kinda struggling with mental health right now, especially people in the USA with COVID. What has been your favourite part of the day? My favourite part of today was actually... I came up with this last minute short video, and I got it done and I sent it to some friends and they really liked it. Which Sanders Side do you feel you embody most? Ah, I would probably say it’s either Patton or Roman because Patton can be definitely me, all the time, just really enthusiastic about things and finding things cute, but Roman... Roman’s sensitivity, oh. That’s me. 

What was the first job you had? I actually worked as a page in a library! A- pages basically just kinda like, shelve books, check books out; it’s one of the chillest jobs I’ve ever had, one of my favourites, and my dad always had a lovely dad joke for it: ‘you’re working as a page, when do you get promoted to a book?’

How tall are you? I usually say 5ft 10, but I think I’m trying to be a little more realistic with myself. And I’m probably 5ft 9 and a half. *zooms in on his face, staring into the camera* I’m holding onto that half a foot for all dear life.

What is Fluffuary?

Fluffuary is a month long event held in the month of February focusing around any and all Sanders Sides ships, plus a few other TS characters for flavor! Each day has a different ship prompt, including several choice days to make sure you have the chance to write your favorite ships!

 What can I make for the event?

Anything you’d like! Art, fic, moodboards, cosplay, song playlists, edits, etc! Any and all content is accepted as long as it follows the rules!

Do I have to follow the prompts?

Nope! The prompts are there to provide a starting point, but feel free to deviate! If there’s only a few ships you’d like to focus on for the month, you can do so! You can skip days or post multiple pieces on the same day too. This is meant to be a fun, stress free event! The works you create don’t even need to be fluff, if you feel like making something else!

1. From one to five stars, how would you rate your writing?  (No downplaying yourself!) 3/5? Could use more editing and description and can be weirdly paced.

3. What do you think makes your writing stand out from other works? I don’t seem to have a specific narrative voice that people recognize but I’m pretty proud of mostly organic dialogue. 

4. Are there any writers that inspire you? as a rule i never look up to anybody for inspiration but there’s some stuff in my ao3 bookmarks I fawn over.

5. What’s the fic you’re most proud of? Right now, none of them. It changes normally, anyway. If get too proud then I’d get my ass kicked by RSD if someone didn’t like it so it’s safer this way

6. What element of writing do you find comes easily? Dialogue. 

7. What element of writing do you struggle with most? Organic description, poetic language kind of stuff. I can paint a scene but I’m not so great with bring out out a feeling with description alone.

8. Which character(s) do you find easiest to write? Janus and Virgil are probably tied. They both have things I struggle with but I don’t have to go back and do much adjusting of language and tone with them. Though admittedly my Virgil is signifigantly more foul-mouthed than canon and I tend to prefer pre-AA feral asshole Virgil.

9. Which character(s) do you find most difficult to write? Patton. I write him the least, so people can probably tell. I love Patton, I really do, but it’s so hard to keep away from fanon Patton. 

10. What’s your favorite genre to write for? Angst w/ H/C obviously. Or if you’re talking about regular book genres, Fantasy. I fucking love fantasy world building.

11. Who or what do you find yourself writing about most? Trauma. I blame Daeram. As if Ayri isn’t a giant Angst Demon.

12. Tell us about a WIP you’re excited about. Slopes. I’m really into it. I’ve got three one shots running right now. Patrons can read the first part of the unnamed cat remus one, there’s also a coffeeshop au tropey nonsense one like eglantine & lycoris, but Slopes is addiction angst. Mmmmm. Virgil is addicted to coke and alcohol and will listening to his friends even be in time? Who knows, especially not me, but there’s already over 30k. 

13. First fandom you ever wrote for? InuYasha. Or was it Harry Potter? Or shit, The Blue Sword? Fuck, I’ve been writing for a long time, I really have no idea.

14. What’s your favorite fandom to write for? Sanders Sides. The characters are the perfect dynamic for writing since they exist in balance of each other and the popular, easy to project on archetypes featured are incredibly fun to do basically any scenario with.

15. What’s the weirdest fandom you’ve ever written for? Weird storywise? Kingdom Hearts? I can’t even follow the plot anymore. Weird Fandomwise? Sanders Sides. Its simultainiously the fluffiest and angstiest nonsense at the same time.

16. Any guilty pleasure trope(s)? Vampires. Gay ones. Gay Vampires. I also love calm tol and angy smol.

17. A trope you’ll never, ever write for. Any tropes that normalize incredibly toxic behaviour or tropes that are inherantly ableist, but I can’t think of any.

18. Wildest fic you’ve ever written? Incorrigible continues to be complete nonsense.

19. Do you prefer canon-compliant, AUs, or something in-between? AUs. I mean closest I even have is canon-divergence other than a single short.

20. Gen fic or shippy stuff? I like it when there is gay nonsense along with a plot that is treated as more important than the relationship the most. But I like both. There’s more shippy stuff in tss so i read more shipping action by default.

21. Favorite pairing to write for? (platonic or romantic!) Anxceit/Sleepxiety, but in general, give me darksides or give me death/j

22. Do you listen to anything while you write? Almost everything I write has a special playlist I listen to to help me write it, but otherwise I listen to my Nyan playlist, an alter is picking the tunes, or a voidfam playlist. I never have music off. When my internet is down I just listen to the songs I own or Anxiety’s theme on loop.

23. Do you prefer prompts and challenges, or completely independent ideas? I’m fine with all of them. I love working with prompts but I tend to deviate. And I’ve never done a challenge since I can’t do deadlines and bad things happen bingo never sent me a card and I applied three times.

24. One-shots or multi-chaptered works? I am generally multi-chaptered stuff, but I’ve been working on a few one-shots lately that are much longer than most one shots.

25. Have you ever daydreamed about side adventures/spin-offs from your fic? Tell us about them! I was originally thinking of doing some little 13-year-old Dreaming!Roman (y’know, the one with a job) shorts but it turns out I just had an alter of that little bastard and that’s why I inexplicably know more about him then I ever even considered. I still might do them after Dreaming is done. But that’s paced so slowly who knows when that might happen. Otherwise I put stuff in my notes and just do shorts of it if I’m like “oh you know what’s cool???” but since I can’t daydream maybe this question doesn’t apply to me.

26. Is there anything you’ve wanted to write, but you’ve been too scared to try? I want to do more autism stuff, and I’ve had it demanded a few times, but I’m scared of being that explict about it for some reason. Possibly because I might be, possibly because I’m scared of doing it wrong even though I’ve accidentally coded multiple characters autistic. I’m scared of explictly tagging them as such, too. 

27. What’s the nicest comment you’ve ever received? That I can remember off the top of my head? I’m going with one from @a-genz-with-trauma-and-kins. It really helped me out and was just so kind and literally the best christmas gift I got in 2020. 

28. How well do you handle criticism when it comes to your writing? I can handle it alright but Daeram is a little fucking pissbaby about it. Constructive criticism helps people get better, so I appreciate it. I can’t handle critism that is incomplete, though. “i just don’t get it” or “I don’t know I don’t like it” kind of things. If I can’t understand the why to fix it then things get out of control. And then I spiral and RSD for like four days minimum. If it came from an anon or a troll, too, It might not bother me for as long. Things that are just like “this is shit and you should feel bad” just make me laugh. Couldn’t even bother to read it long enough to insult me proper? I don’t care.

29. Have you ever gone outside of your comfort zone for a fic? How did it turn out? I have a few times. Mostly in shorts and prompts, I think. I think they turned out okay. They’re not particularly inspired or anything.

30. Tooth-rotting fluff or merciless angst? Depends on my mood. Am I triggered? give me the fluff. Am I vibin? Angst. 

31. Do you have any OCs? Tell us about them! Fuck, fam, no, I can’t, I have so many. I have multiple original stories and some of them have very large casts and like holy fuck. Or do you mean in Sanders Sides fandom? Um, Morgan and Thorn in PD. The lesbian and her himbo dynamic. I love them. They’re dorks. Morgan is strong person with sharp tongue and soft romantic heart and Thorn is just so kind and so dumb and so exciteable he’s like a puppy. They were just filler characters and I got attached to them. Felton even gets redemption for being an ass later in PD, like oof i never intended to include so much OC content, especially for names I just picked randomly.

33. Is there anything you wish your audience knew about your writing or writing process? an alter and I write together and I have absolutely no idea what’s going to happen, what I’m writing about, or even what year it is. I often don’t even remember what I wrote. There’s no outline. I have an idea and I pick things at random for it. There’s just notes and an evil gleam in a demon’s eye. The only reason I know more than readers is because I take a long time to edit and some of these stories have fucking alters up in my head who can tell me things. Daeram tells me nothing. The writing demon supposedly has all this knowledge but I have absolutely no clue because he does not talk to me, he just fronts and slams out 9k in a few hours or we cofront to write and I’m like “oh no she didn’t” while typing

Copy and paste an excerpt you’re particularly fond of. i’m fond of the entire painful death series and I tried to find something I really liked without spoilers in stargazing and I couldn’t so here’s a random thing from incorrigble: “So, what do you do with your friends?” Patton continued on with a megawatt smile. “Grand larceny,” Virgil deadpanned and glared at Patton, who was taken aback. Remy and Andy just broke out laughing while Virgil tentatively sipped his still-too-hot-cocoa. 

35. Ramble about any fic-related thing you want!  slopes my dudes slopes i have learned so much about cocaine! like wow! I thought for a minute it was going to end with MCD around 30k but it swtiched from whump to hurt/comfort and I still don’t know if it’s going to be MCD but look at that funky little coke/alcohol addict go, it’s a medical wonder he’s alive! It’s not like there’s what seems to be a little talked about interaction between alcohol and cocaine that causes a toxic chemical to build up in the liver which can result in liver failure and sudden death at basically any moment! Which is part of why it may result in MCD but this time no ghosts! maybe it’ll be h/c with whump elements or maybe it’ll be whump with h/c elements we can’t know for sure

Tumblr’s Top Fandoms of 2020

It’s been a weird and often devastating year, and our social media has reflected that. Tumblr has just released its top fandoms of 2020 and it’s fascinating to see how a year of pandemic and quarantine has affected transformative fandom and broader cultural trends. In a year when almost everyone spent a lot more time at home, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the most blogged about topic on the social media platform, followed by animated dramedy Steven Universe, Belgian SKAM adaptation WtFOCK, K-pop supergroup BTS, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. We talked to Tumblr’s Trend Expert Amanda Brennan about how she interpreted the biggest trends of the year, how this was a big year for animation and international media, and why 2020 was the year everyone stopped worrying about what was cool and just embraced what they love. And, now, our chat with Brennan. (This Q&A has been edited for clarity and length.)

Den of Geek: I’ve heard you refer to the users as the Tumblr hive-mind or the orchid, whatever it is. I was just hoping you could generally talk about what the Tumblr hive-mind is to you? Which is the way of saying, who uses Tumblr generally? And how and why? If you can even extrapolate those things. Go!

Amanda Brennan: Most of our audiences is Gen Z; it’s at 48%. Our new user registration with Gen Z is even higher; I’m pretty sure it’s 60%. These are people who come to Tumblr because they love something so much they just want to share that love with people who love it as much as they do. I know that feels like a giant umbrella, but that’s the thing: Tumblr is what you make of it. If you love sports, sports Tumblr is intense hockey Tumblr, so good. If you love TV, you’ll have all of that. K-pop Tumblr, totally amazing. Furby Tumblr is off the hook and they make these incredible creations. I’ve recently gotten into Stained Glass Tumblr.

There’s layers upon layers. No matter what you love, there’s something on Tumblr for you. That’s both the easiest thing and the hardest thing about it. You have to go in being like, “Alright, I’m so into this thing, what does Tumblr have for me?” It’s not like the other social media networks, right? It’s really about what you love rather than who you know.

Yeah, I like that. I did want to ask you specifically about the process of how you track trends and how you make decisions about what to track?

We built the whole taxonomy that powers fandom metrics based on what Tumblr talks about. I’m a librarian, as you know, and I kind of reverse engineered it. My first year in review at Tumblr in 2013, they handed me a spreadsheet and they’re like, ‘OK, go to town.” So I was like, “Cool, let me pull out the threads that I see.” We really let the data tell us how to analyze it, if that makes sense. So when it comes to what we track, I have a running notebook that I’ve kept all year of the things that I’ve wanted to have in year in review.

The Witcher has been on my list since it came out. Animal Crossing has been another one. The Old Guard had a huge moment. I was just writing notes, like, “Oh, what is this thing? And we’ll keep an eye on it.” I have an amazing team. We all are into our own pieces of Tumblr. So we’ll all work together to just keep an eye on different fandoms. I don’t know if you know about Minecraft YouTuber fandom?

Yeah. I was actually listening to the latest Fansplaining last night and they mentioned it in that. I was just like, “OK, a new thing.” There’s always a new thing to learn about.

There’s always a new thing. That’s the beauty of Tumblr. It’s so fluid in fandom. You can go from one fandom to another and then you’ll see like, “Ooh, what is this thing?” I’ve got Supernatural on the brain, as who in the fandom doesn’t right now. [This interview was recorded on the day of the Supernatual series finale.] I was telling someone, the whole reason I got into Supernatural was because I saw a gif from the show on Tumblr and I was like, “What is happening? Let me go back and watch this entire series.” That’s the vibe of Tumblr, right? You see a thing and you’re like, “Oh, I need to know everything about that.”

Supernatural: The Internet’s Best Reactions to the Series Finale

Hmm. Yeah, for sure. I was interested in talking to you or getting your insight into how trends you saw or data you saw that were maybe tied to the very unique experience of being in the middle of a pandemic.

Yeah. I was looking back at the predictions that I had made last year and like four of those things didn’t even come out. It was just so unexpected. There’s two things that we really saw tied to the pandemic. The first was “cottagecore” as an aesthetic. It kind of touched everything because it’s soothing, it feels comfortable. In March and April in the early days, when you didn’t know what to do, you’re stuck in a forest isolation. Cottagecore has got this vibe of chosen isolation. It was very fantasy-driven and something to reach out for.

That evolved also into nostalgia. I think this year’s really big theme is nostalgia and comfort. We saw huge returns to fandoms like Twilight and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Avatar going on Netflix was such a world-breaking moment. Not only did it introduce a new, younger fandom to the show, there’s a lot of Avatar content once you get into it, but it brought people back to a younger time in their lives. Remembering and rewatching. The Avatar fandom, as you see, it’s all over all of the lists. Zuko is number 20 on all of the things on Tumblr this year. Avatar was able to redefine people’s year. Because you know what, we’re all at home, I’m going to binge Avatar. Reignite my love for this fandom.

A lot of TV too, because TV is episodic, you get lost in it. Movies had a really rough year. When we look at the movies, movies like Megamind were trending this year. That comfort movie that you go back and watch 17 times.

Yeah. I was curious about that too. The balance or proportions between older fandoms and newer fandoms, like the Avatar example. I was curious how much that changed this year? How much you thought it was tied to the pandemic? How much is tied to accessibility and things, like Avatar coming to Netflix? Do you think that is an interest in older fandoms? Or that it’s going to continue past the pandemic?

Yeah. I think another high-level theme of this year is the rejection of cringe culture. I’m getting a little ahead of myself, but I’ll tie it all back in. I think people are realizing what their values are and not being afraid to admit that they like a thing. Not caring what other people think of the things they like. Unabashedly loving the things they love. That’s why I think we do see a resurgence in these older fandoms.

Because people who may have loved them their whole lives, or may have been nervous to share that they liked it when they were younger they’re not afraid anymore. They’re like, “You know what? Twilight, it’s not that great, but I love it. This is my emotional support vampire.” Recognizing that you can be critical of something. You can see where its flaws are, but you can still love it. That duality of fandom is something that is going to persist into next year. That freedom to just like a thing, because you like it. Be able to see its flaws, but still be like, “You know what? Overall, this brings me joy and the world is melting down.”

I’m on board with that mission, that plan for 2021. I did want to ask about the role of non-English language media, especially live action stuff. Generally because I was someone who fell into The Untamed this year, but I saw that there were two SKAM remakes as well that are on the top 10. In general, have you seen over your time at Tumblr, and maybe especially in the past few years, an increase in non-English language content? Do you think that is mostly English speakers and Americans being more open to that or being able to find it easier? Or do you think it’s also an influx of people from outside the United States coming to Tumblr? Or both?

Interesting. The data that we work with is actually stripped of all user information. I don’t really have an insight into where these people are coming from. I do think that users in general are more open to content in any language. Tumblr is more interested in characters than where the story comes from. Thinking about The Untamed, it’s just such a compelling story, it doesn’t matter if you have to read subtitles.

To parallel it to something in major pop culture, Parasite. People are becoming more open to just watching content because it’s good. SKAM is really fascinating to me because the number one live action show is wtFOCK. Then, I think two years ago, 2018, the original SKAM was number one at some point. This show really transcends language barriers. It transcends geographical barriers. At the core, the story of the teenagers is just so relatable to anyone. We’ve seen lots of translation happening and not just into English. Translation of SKAM into other languages, just because people want more of these characters and their iterations, no matter what locale they’re based in. I’m waiting for some professor to have a class on it, because it’s so fascinating to me.

I also wanted to ask about how you thought the election cycle affected Tumblr this year, if there were any trends or data that you were like, “Yes, of course this is what people were doing on Tumblr this year.”

Tumblr has always had this backbone of social justice. This year, it came out stronger and in more force. No matter what fandom you were in or interests, everyone I know on Tumblr was participating in sharing social justice stuff. Even politics, if they weren’t from the US, those kinds of memes that were like, “I feel for you”. The way that fandoms do. I see your show is ending and I’m sorry.

The one thing that Tumblr really had leading up to the election was such an appreciation for the postal service. Especially Gen Z, their world is so much larger due to digital connection. Mail order, just as well as sending letters and keeping in touch with your digital friends is just as important as keeping in touch with your IRL friends. All of the artists on Tumblr, so many of them turn to mail order to replace cons. This is their livelihood. By the time the fall hit and the postal service was having all these issues, people are ready to jump in. There were the Transformers dressed like mail people.

There were all these comments like “support your postal workers,” “support the USPS.” It really boils down to the fact that we are all connected and the mail service is something in the US that connects everyone. Even overseas. Supporting these artists whose livelihood went from IRL to online and having to deal with all of this.

And the “Super Putin Election.” The confluence of those elements. I was just surfing on my personal computer and I was on Tumblr and I saw a post being like “Destiel’s canon.” I’m like, “Excuse me?” I immediately texted my team. I was like, “Open up your work computers, let’s go.”

It’s time.

We all signed on trying to figure out what’s going on and watching the numbers. That, to me, is thrilling. I said this to someone else, but it felt like the night of The Dress. To have that moment where everyone on the internet is feeling the energy. The things that kept getting layered on top of it. Putin and Sherlock and all the anime mysteries. It was breakneck speed, and it was really thrilling just to be in that moment, and so Tumblr.

I did want to ask you about an increase in animated fandom and potentially anime fandom. A lot of these things I’m anecdotally or just observing things in my own little corner of the internet. It just seems like animation and anime, probably at least partially because Netflix has accumulated a much larger anime collection and seems to be investing in these sorts of things. Have you seen that increase? Could you talk about it, if so?

It plays into what we were talking about earlier, twofold. That nostalgia vibe, the late nineties anime vibe, that art style. Also your comfort zone and being open to more stuff just because it’s good. Not worrying about reading subtitles and stuff like that. But anime in general had a huge year. Haikyū!! ending also transposed into other fandoms because that moment of the final panels, it brings people together. People being so excited to see this massive thing come to a close. You might not be familiar with Haikyū!! in general, but you’ll see the fanart and be like, “Oh, I feel that.” It’s the emotion of it.

The popularity of Avatar did also open people’s doors to like, “Oh, well, what else can I watch? What else do I want to learn about”? Boku No Hero was consistently on our Week In Review every week. BEASTARS is another Netflix anime that’s at the top. Then Mo Dao Zu Shi, thinking about The Untamed, the story of Mo Dao Zu Shi is so fascinating. I don’t think I can name another piece of content that has that storyline. People are just ready to take it all on.

I did want to ask you, I think you’ve probably talked about some of these already, but what were some of the biggest fandom moments for you on Tumblr this year?

Oh boy. So many things going canon. Catradora was a huge, huge moment. I cried watching that. The Witcher, Jaskier, introducing this whole new world to Henry Cavill. I saw a post yesterday that was like once Superman was goth, a lot more people realize that he’s hot. Repurposing and looking at things in a new way. Among Us, so huge. There is a user who is doing a comic about White and Pink being in love. She’s giving them lore. She’s giving them backstory, personalities. It is amazing.

Unus Annus, I am not very into streamers, but I’ve caught some of those videos. When they had their final stream, I was tuning in. I was like, “Are you really going to delete the channel?” Then they did. Just watching the fans have that moment, even though I am not in that fandom, it was wonderful so meaningful.

Harry Potter being taken by the fans. Fans own Harry Potter now, and that’s what matters. The Old Guard also came out of nowhere and really blew Tumblr away. The Immortal Husbands. I love that ship. I’ve got to touch on almost all of the places, MCR, My Chemical Romance. Those fans have woken up and they didn’t get their tour, but they will. They’re not going to sleep until they do.

Because we maybe all have Supernatural on the brain, to a certain extent. I’m just curious how you think, that show’s been on for 15 years. The fandom has gone through literal generations. How do you think the fandom is going to change?

There’s always going to be a supernatural gif for everything. People will continue gifing it. It’s going to surpass what it is and it’s going to become that comfort show. This is a personal anecdote, but when I go to the dentist, every single time supernatural is on. It’s just like, “Oh, I get to watch my boys while I’m getting my teeth cleaned. That’s good.” It’s always going to be there. It’s always going to be there for people when they need it the most. We’re going to see a lot more fan creations. People love these boys, men now they’re adults. People love these characters. I haven’t watched this season. I am going to watch the finale tonight. I’m going in almost cold. I know that a lot of fan favorites have returned. My prediction for Supernatural fandom going forward is seeing these side stories come through in fanfiction even more than they already do. Lots more Charlie. That’s personal of mine because I love her.

I don’t think you’re alone in this.

Yeah. Who doesn’t love Charlie? Seeing these smaller characters come out and just shine in their own fan works, more so than the world might’ve provided them in canon.

It feels dangerous to make fandom predictions based on what happened this year, but if you have any predictions and or hopes for the coming year in terms of Tumblr and fandom?

Where we’re at now and going forward, it’s all about true authenticity. Screw what people think. We’re rejecting our old ways of thinking. We’re about flipping perspectives and forgetting what you thought was important in exchange for what you truly love. 2020 has helped us all figure out what our values at our core are. It’s about choosing something that makes you happy, that supports you, and your people. Choosing the happiness of those around you and making sure that you’re fighting for the goodness in life. Which sounds really sugar sweet, but one of the things, again, that I love about Tumblr is it is about putting people first based on the things they love. That’s what I see happening.

About The “Sanders Sides” YouTooz

Heya, fellow Fanders! I understand that many of you will likely have some questions about the upcoming “Sanders Sides” YouTooz. To try and help out, I’ll be updating this post with any new relevant information I come across! Last Updated: October 19th 2020

1. Release Date: The “Thomas Sanders” collection will be available for pre-order on October 30th 2020 (US). (See “Shipping” for more details.) After closely monitoring the YouTooz site, I estimate that the option to pre-order will go live around 2PM US Central Time. Please keep in mind that the precise time has yet to be confirmed.

2. Product Price: Patton, Virgil, Logan and Roman are all listed as $30 (US Dollars) The aforementioned figures are approximately £23/4 (GBP) or €25/6 (Euros) each. Thomas’ YouTooz is the only exception.

3. Thomas’ Bonus YouTooz Thomas’ YouTooz is listed as a “Bonus” item. This means that you may only order Thomas’ YouTooz if you have purchased every other figurine in the “Thomas Sanders” collection. 

Price For The Full Collection: $120/£93-6/€100-4. Thomas’ YouTooz is given as a free bonus item, and will not add to the overall cost.

4. Shipping: Pre-orders will not be shipped until February 5-12th, 2021. Arrival Time: 5-10 business days in the United States. 8-14 business days everywhere else. YouTooz provides free international shipping for every item in the “Thomas Sanders” collection. “Shipments to the UK and EU are subject to VAT. Additional customs fees may be charged upon delivery to shipments outside of the US, UK and EU.” To clarify: You will not have to pay an additional customs fee if you live in the US, UK or EU.

Additional Note: I’ve noticed quite a few Fanders were disappointed with the lack of Janus/Remus YouTooz figures. My current theory is that Thomas will not release their figures until the final “Dark Side” has been revealed.  Regardless of whether or not we will ever see Janus/Remus YouTooz figures, please refrain from pestering Thomas to make them. I understand you might be disappointed, but nobody should be harassing Thomas to produce more merch.  Remember, the decision isn’t entirely his to make. This was a collaborative effort between Thomas’ team and YouTooz.  Let’s just be grateful for what we have, and continue to support Thomas in his future endeavours.

Egotober Day 19: Found and Lost

Prompt: cap hat

Summary: It’s cleaning day in the base’s storage room, some things are found within the many boxes, others are lost.

A/N: While I was planning out Egotober 2020, Seán found his old hat, so I had to capitalize on the day where the plot was “cap hat”. In equally important news it’s the anniversary to the first Sanders’s Side episode. So enjoy.

It was a rare day in the heroes’ base. It was storage cleaning day. Or it was more accurate to say that Henrik got upset at the state the storage room was always in and pitched enough of a fit that Seán muttered a “Fine!” and organized a group to go clean it.

The storage room was also known as the “garbage room” by several heroes. Since everything that couldn’t go in the normal rooms went in the storage room. The problem was that seasonal decorations also went in the storage room. And so did all the heroes’ medical and personal records.

So occasionally stuff was just left to pile up and build for years and years. Some boxes, i.e. anything that Henrik or Logan had to touch was clean and organized. Everyone else’s belongings were in a sliding scale of neat and tidy, or haphazardly thrown into a box.

Mark was ordered to move all the decorations and stuff that would wind up going back into the storage room. Iplier kept all the records in his room, but it resulted in a row of boxes going down the hallway and Henrik looking like he was going to have an aneurysm. He was only coaxed into calming down with the promise that I’d be gone by the end of the week. Everyone would come in and organize their stuff, and the storage boxes would go back in.

Nate, Logan, and Henrik had already done their boxes earlier that morning. Now Seán and Amy were in the storage room.

“That’s the last of it,” Mark walked in, dusting off his hands as he started walking off. “I’m gonna get myself something to drink, cause I don’t keep stuff.”

“Can you get me something?” Amy looked up at him.

Mark stopped and leaned back into the room, “Iced coffee?”

“Thanks,” she smiled back, Mark smiled at her before leaving.

Seán was mostly digging through boxes, sorting through boxes almost meticulously, trash going into a bag, papers going into files, and other stuff going into boxes.

Then he let out an audible gasp, “Ooh! Oooohhhh! I knew it was in here!”

“What? What is it?” Amy asked in interest.

He stuck his hand all the way to the bottom and pulled out a grey flat cap hat. A huge smile on his face and he slid it on his head. “Ahh, nice. I knew it had ta be in here.”

“Did you find it?” Amy smiled. “I thought you lost that thing out in town?”

“Nah, I put it in some box an’ then the box got moved out here,” Seán smiled, taking out his phone and looking at himself with the camera. “Ahh, I look like such a little kid.”

“Did someone find embarrassing pictures?” Mark smiled as he flew back in, an energy drink in one hand and a bottle of iced coffee in the other.

“Didn’t you lose that one when Anti tried to electrocute you?” Mark grinned as he handed Amy her coffee.

“My lucky hat can survive the frigid vacuum ‘a Dark’s soul,” Seán boasted. “I knew if I actually cleaned stuff out I’d find it. It was either here or in my garage.”

“You gonna wear it with your costume again?” Amy asked.

“I dunno, been a couple years,” Seán shrugged, taking the hat off and looking at it fondly. “Don’t worry, won’t lose yah this time.”

At that moment, arguing started to come down from the hallway. It was a couple seconds later that the Sides walked in. Logan with some folded boxes, duct tape, and several trash bags.

Virgil was right behind him with Roman. “Ughh,” the anxious Side began to complain. “We’ll be here all day.”

Patton had a huge smile on his face as he walked in with an old WWI-era camera. “We should be done soon.”

Logan had insisted on bringing the camera with them after Janus had threatened to break it several times. He didn’t like the camera, complaining about the humming being insufferable. A sound none of the other Sides could actually hear themselves.

“Most of this stuff is yours, Patt,” Virgil reminded. “I haven’t been here long enough to make a mess.”

Patton set down the camera, “And it’s all important memories, so it won’t take long for us to be done.”

Mark and Jack looked at the camera, something about it just not sitting right, like it was a black hole of attention, demanding that someone look at it, pay attention to it . . . pick it up . . .

“Falsehood,” Logan corrected firmly. “You hoard garbage of sentimental value, you need to let them go.”

“But— I—” Patton fumbled.

“Garbage?” Roman dug through one of the Sides’ many, many boxes to tug out some plastic flowers. “They’re not garbage.”

“Do not enable him,” Logan warned angrily. “This has been going on for too long.”

The camera just sat in the middle of the Sides, making the other three people in the room a bit uncomfortable. Before Mark could speak up, all their communicators were off. Some big catastrophe was going on in downtown Brighton. It was Wilford in one of his manic episodes.

“Oh look at that,” Patton said, “we have to go save the day.”

“When we all get back we are finishing what we started,” Logan told him as his suit began to snap around him and his visor came down. “Head out, I’ll take the communication chair.”

All four of the Sides raced out and the instant they were out of the room, the camera had less of a malignant buzz to it. It was almost like it was just a normal camera, but there was something wrong about it.

Jack, Mark, and Amy chose to leave the suit up. Figuring that it could be dealt with when they all got back. The base was safe, no one would steal stuff from the storage room.

Nate missed the summons, he was set to go on tour and was already late. But while he’d been cleaning out his stuff, he’d forgotten a little book of phone numbers he wanted to get from his stuff. They were all old numbers he’d been meaning to get around to being in contact with, but dreading doing so all the same.

But he needed to do it now, or they’d track him down. They’d find out about Mare, and Nate didn’t want to admit that he’d gotten attached to the demon. That they had a fragile partnership.

Those thoughts went out of his head when he walked into the room and he felt like something had hit him in the face. His ears popped with the pressure in the room and reaching up to check on his nose, he noticed that when he pulled his hand away there was blood on his fingers.

“Arrghhhh, what the hell,” Nate grumbled, his ears ringing.

Hmmmmm . . .

Nate looked around the room, trying to see if something had snuck into the base. He saw an old camera just sitting there in the middle of the Sides’ mess of stuff. He didn’t feel like something was staring at him, but he did feel like something was in the room with him, sleeping but it could wake at any moment.

The humming was almost sing-song-esq in quality. Like a song Nate had heard but couldn’t place it right now.

He saw that camera and his blood chilled, he could feel what it was, what it had been used to do. And he lunged for it, high stepping over things, snatching it off the table and racing to his box to dig through it until he found the old spiral bound pocket notebook, and raced out of the room and out of the base as if someone had lit him on fire. The camera in his hands as he got into his car and raced for the tour meetup spot to properly figure out where this thing had been.

He had to get this thing out of the base, he’ll if he could get this thing out of the city that would be enough.

Logan would walk back into the storage room later that night, crisis over and his heart plummeted when he saw the camera gone. He felt like something had been ripped away from him. Checking the camera he watched Nate walk in, get a bloody nose, and then run off with the camera in a clear panic.

Trying to call Nate resulted in only reaching his voicemail, but Logan tried not to panic, leaving him. Message to call them about the box he’s taken.

The next day, Logan woke up to a message on his phone that read: “It’s cursed, keeping it in containment. We’ll talk when I get back.”

Logan frowned, worried and remorseful, but he had to trust Nate would not do anything drastic, that it was safe with Nate. He texted back and asked for Nate to keep the object intact, and the singer promised he would.

With that, Logan regrettably admitted to himself that there was nothing he could do, and get his phone aside to get an early start to his day.
