Hori you've already shown you have depth sometimes as a writer but then you just beat the plot with the Hack Stick. How is a reader supposed to feel stakes when major character deaths get walked back like this and make any emotional investment in it fucking worthless? Even Oda, the king of fakeout bullshit shonen deaths will sprinkle in one or two actual deaths every few arcs to give some level of suspense. Plus he manages to write Literal Whos with a surprising amount of emotional depth so they aren't cardboard cutouts and you feel something when they die.

I've said it before but BNHA is a decent, nice Lunchables shonen. You're getting a product that's got sprinkles of flavor despite the manufactured blandness, and fuck it sometimes I'm craving a Lunchable to just have for funsies and enjoy casually. But people claiming a Lunchable is a Michelin star dish definitely have different tastes 🤷‍♀️

I loved how NEO pulled the rug out with Rindo’s character. At first, he generally seems much more sociable and outwardly friendly compared to Neku and then the game quickly goes "yeah, nah, he’s a huge fucking mess too." He’s a good kid fundamentally at his core but he can also be whiny, hypocritical, passive-aggressive, and kind of insensitive at times. He has a tendency to be judgemental and harsh to the people around him while not acknowledging his own faults, like when he complains about Beat joining the team even though he saved their lives beforehand because he’s not Neku or when he gives Fret shit for fawning over Eiji Oji and Kanon while falling for Motoi’s BS. He’s so pessimistic about himself and others that not even a death game that heavily emphasizes the value of teamwork can get him to fully come out of his shell, which is where his time-travel powers come in AND EVEN THEN it’s a double-edged sword since on one hand, it forces him to actively step up to the plate and survey the situation to find the best possible solution, which leads to him slowly growing out of his shell, but on the other, it also leads to him becoming overly reliant on his time travel so that he can walk back from potentially life-changing decisions without having to worry about it since he has a magic reset button. Which ends up biting him in the ass. Hard.

He’s one of those types of people who is ultimately a thinker and planner instead of a do-er, but his being young and overly impressionable takes this personality quirk to such an extreme that he's foundationally useless to most groups. He’s the type of person who you have in a group project who sits around and does nothing, but then complains with the project does poorly because he couldn't be bothered to speak.

He's so unconfident and directionless that he uses effectively Instagram as a means to listen to someone who sounds like some 2deep4u philosopher post dumb flowery bullshit that effectively has all the meaning of "Drink water when you're thirsty." and he admits to finding such "deep" meaning in these posts that it supposedly helped him through life. Because he's 15 and doesn't know anything.

However, all of this makes him interesting as a character because he’s, again, still a fundamentally good kid at his core. While he’s shown to have a fuse, he is also the kind of person who has the ability to think his emotions through. That's what we ultimately see when he and Fret finally talk and drop their beef. The game depicting Rindo's capacity for self-awareness and emotional reflection is a positive revelation of his character strengths. He proves that he's capable of recognizing when he's in the wrong and knows how to apologize, a trait he shows quite a few times throughout the story, while also doing everything he can to set things right as well as be more understanding toward how his friends feels.

He’s kind of the guy who will drop everything to help a little kid out, even when there’s no tangible benefit to doing so and he and the others are shown to be on limited time, shows empathy to his friends/fallen enemies, and feels massive amounts of guilt for his actions, even if he didn’t know better at the time.

Hell, the entire endgame is fueled by his selfish yet understandable desire to save the people he cares about most from total erasure, to the point that he’s willing to risk thousands of lives to do so. But not only is he shown to be internally grappling with himself regarding his decision but he’s also willing to take responsibility and ensure that EVERYTHING goes right not just for himself and his friends but the people of Shibuya in general, in a parallel to Neku’s own selfish if understandable decision to put the bonds he formed in the original game (particularly with Joshua) over the actual city.

Characters aren't interesting simply by switching between 2 different character traits. They're interesting when all those traits are being expressed at the same time for reasons that are consistent within their internal logic. You gotta be a good writer to pull that off and you gotta know when to show off these dimensions during your story to achieve proper dramatic effect when the time calls for it and NEO I feel does this pretty damn well.

Between Adventure 2 having a filmed execution and an ill little girl getting killed, Secret Rings having a strongly implied abusive romance, Shadow having a comet-induced alien plague, Frontiers having you face death (Straight. Up.), not to mention the Zombot apocalypse in early IDW, where does Starline kidnapping kids, stuffing machinery into them, brainwashing them, gaslighting them, killing and reviving them, and actively tormenting them fall on the franchise's Gratuitous Grimness scale?

It somehow manages to be tryhard and toothless at the same time.

I say that because on one hand, they really try to drive home how Surge and Kit are such poor wittle victims, how Starline is oh-so-evil for experimenting on them (and thus more evil than Eggman, even though Eggman has done objectively worse things on a much more regular basis), and tries to present a 2deep4u conflict for Sonic... on the other hand, Surge falls on her face like a slapstick clown and generally acts like a Twitch streamer, Kit stands around being a forgettable simp, and the whole thing is resolved with no resolution at all. Sonic's happy, so you should be too! Now direct your attention to Sally Sheeples! Aren't Tangle and Whisper so Stunning and Brave?

As far as dark subjects that you can get away with in this franchise go, I don't think the basic concept with Surge and Kit and their backstory is too out-of-bounds. But execution matters, and just like certain other examples (like '06 and Frontiers), it wasn't anywhere to be found here.

People that try to compare Ironwood to Anakin/Vader never cease to amuse me.

Vader was allowed to be competent and intimidating. When Vader shows up, you know shit's going to go down. People gush over his moments in Kenobi, Rogue One, and Fallen Order for good reason. Ironwood was a bumbling idiot the entirety of season 8 making one laughably incompetent decision after the next. Whinge about how, "Oh, that was the point! He's SUPPOSED to look stupid!" all you want, that doesn't make it any better, nor does it suddenly become le 2deep4u writing some people try to paint it as.

Though I suppose if Anakin and Ironwood have one thing in common, it's that both Revenge of the Sith and Season 8 took arcs that made perfect sense on paper and presented them in ways so lousy Anakin needed supplementary material to justify it, and Ironwood... still hasn’t gotten any better.

Wtf happened while I was gone, I thought Pengo disliked Glip? what happened?

He did for a while. the two ended up reconnecting a few years back. afaik pengo wanted to help glip by pointing out to them a lot of the shit theyve done and marl has done and he even helped with the overall apology that glip posted. both pengo and glip were hurt by marl so I'm sure that had a lot to do with pengo talking to them and the both of them making amends over their past stuff. now they're close friends and pengo shares a lot of the same ideologies with glip now and seems to parrot a lot of their behaviors.

im not gonna fault him for wanting to make amends with someone who hurt him and finding a common ground with shared trauma. the problem I have with him is his current behavior. his way of speaking to people borders on belittling to blatantly manipulative, seeming to purposely misinterpret other people's words and twist them around to form some 2deep4u meaning where there is none. its exhausting and oozes toxicity and negativity to the point that I dont see how anyone can stand talking to or around him and I'm not saying that to be mean. Imagine saying "I love this art!" and having someone immediately question your use of the word "love", badger you about whether or not you know what love is or feels like, shaming you if you cant explain love to him, and trying to frame it as if you using the word was wrong based on your description on what you think love is followed up with him saying he's just "trying to understand". it's like he views everything as a means to form some artistic interpretation and if he cant form one then its wrong.

Unpopular opinion: I always hated Adventure Time

The style is fugly, the characters are annoyingly quirky, the humor is bizarre in all the wrong ways, the romance subplots got to telenovela levels of tiresome, and the world building was lackluster at best, lazy and 2deep4u at worst.

I wouldn’t mind it so much if I didn’t keep coming across it years after it was over.

What anime’s do you recommend? I’ve seen Your Name, Robotech: The Macross Saga, all of Dragonball, and almost every Ghibli film.

Here I'll toss some shows depending on what you're feeling like watching atm

If you like Ghibli and Your Name because of the pretty animation and catching feelings: Violet Evergarden, Land of the Lustrous, Wolf Children, Maquia when the Promise Flower Blooms, and Orange

If you like DragonBall because it's fun and all about guys who punch and kick while doing flashy cool shit: Honestly I'd recommend picking up One Piece (it's long as fuck so I get why ppl pass on it tho lol). If you're ambivalent then I'd recommend checking out one of the movies since they're all fun and it's not super lore heavy, so you could get what the story's about even if you don't know everything. Assassination Classroom's also fun, but expect to get a little emotional lol. Also Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop are really good, not just for fights and animation but overall. One Punch Man season 1 has some awesome fights and animation, tho lower your expectations for S2 because wew that animation takes a nosedive lol. And Mob Psycho 100! Shit's awesome.

If you like shit that makes you think about things from a meta perspective and enjoy what I call "DEEP THUNK" shows: Evangelion, Mob Psycho 100 (again lol), Stein's;Gate, Parasyte, Ultimate Survivor Kaiji, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, Welcome to the NHK, and Welcome to Irabu's Office. Some of these are more "2deep4u" than others, and even if they have deeper stuff it's a lot more fun and doesn't expect you to be a Rick-and-Morty-300-IQ dude to enjoy it.

Eu sinceramente acho Harry Potter desinteressante demais, não só a historia como o mundo, pra mim é uma historia de fantasia fraca/genérica. Só que sinceramente a autora é tão desprezível, eu passei a detestar toda essa série e franquia.

Mano, eu também nunca tive interesse, acho que eu assisti, tipo, os quatro primeiro filmes na época que tavam saindo(em VHS ainda aliás), eles até te entretem quando tu é criança mas... essa moda hp nunca me pegou... Tudo o que eu sei de HP eu aprendi contra a minha vontade, e, sinceramente, quanto mais eu escuto e vejo mais da história, e também o tipo de pessoa que a JK é... Esses livros são um red flag TREMENDO...

E eu sei que muita gente vai falar "ain vocês ficam fazendo análise profunda de um livro pra criancinhas", mas isso não só refletem os preconceitos da autora, mas crianças internalizam esses tipos de pensamentos preconceituosos também… Uma história pra crianças não precisa ser 2deep4u, mas não quer dizer que precisa ser escrita de qualquer jeito.

e tipo, eu tava conversando com meu irmão sobre isso uns dias atrás (kkkk), mas você pega um filme tipo Monstros S/A (da pixar, mas financiado pela DISNEY, o império do capitalismo), onde eles percebem que o sistema deles (energia a partir do susto das crianças), é falho (as crises de energia, como afeta as crianças, como o dono da fábrica pretendia usar crianças) e eles vão lá e MUDAM o sistema. Podia muito bem ter virado uma história de "ahh não, são só um ou dois ruins na empresa, é só tirar eles e seguir com o resto normalmente" NÃO CARA ele não fazem isso, eles mudam tudo e ainda arrumam uma solução muito melhor pra crise energética tipo??? Isso tudo em um filme PARA CRIANCINHAS… da DISNEY… E aí você tem Harry "preciso manter o status quo de opressão" Potter

E sabe o que eu vou fazer? Não vou assistir, não vou fazer posts sobre, não vou ficar me fazendo de vítima e ficar defendendo meu "direito" de poder ou não continuar apoiando a série. Se por um acaso me der curiosidade de assistir? Eu vou piratear e vai ficar entre mim e o meu pc, ibope pra série eu não vou dar.
