Chapter 43 - This Venerable One is a Sacrifice???
Before Mo Ran could speak, he suddenly heard a sharp, piercing voice behind him shout: "Make way, make way! Let me go first!"
It was that fuban?!
The fuban heaved the heavy stone and crawled forward diligently. Like before, he came to the pharmacy and shouted: "I can't take it anymore! Come and save my life!"
A white-haired jiao swims out - but his jiao tail was completely different from the other jiao. It was covered in gold, shimmering with gorgeous luster. His full head hair was tied with simple hairpins, hanging down on his shoulders. Although his face was full of wrinkles, his face was well-proportioned. His nose was straight, his lips were well curved, and his golden eyes were smoky. You can imagine this gentleman must have been extremely handsome when he was young.
Mo Ran was flabbergasted.
It wasn't like this before. What about the blue dragon?
The elderly jiao glanced at them from a distance, but didn't speak. Instead, he came to the threshold, bent over, and took off the stones hauled by the fuban, one by one.
As the last stone was moved away, the illusion was shattered. The fuban suddenly exploded, blood and pus splashing everywhere. Almost at the same time, all the ghosts and demons in the market froze, then their bodies went limp and drained pus, turning into a foul-smelling blood that permeated the lake.
The lake water was dyed red in an instant. As the color of the blood grew darker and darker, Mo Ran and Chu Wanning soon had difficulty seeing things in the distance, then they couldn't see clearly in the near distance. Finally, everything was scarlet. It was hard to see their hands in front of their faces.
Chu Wanning spoke: "Mo Ran."
Mo Ran understood him so well that Chu Wanning didn't even need to say anything more. He said: "Shizun, don't worry, I'm here."
Chu Wanning didn't say anything, or maybe he was at a loss for words. He was silent for a while and only said: "Be careful."
The blood made the water blurry. Mo Ran couldn't see the face that remained unmoved even if the sky was falling, but it is easier to pick up on the concern in his shizun's voice. He could rarely feel Chu Wanning's warmth on a normal day but, right now, he suddenly felt a heat in his chest. He tightened his grip on the other's hand and responded: "Okay."
The two stood closely back to back. Although they couldn't see each other, they could feel each other's heartbeat and breathes. The situation was treacherous. Chu Wanning summoned Tianwen. Mo Ran's spiritual energy had returned at this point, so he followed and summoned Jiangui.
Shortly after the two had summoned their respective divine weapons, Mo Ran suddenly exclaimed: "Shizun, look over there!"
Chu Wanning turned to the side. At the entrance of the pharmacy where the old jiao was picking up stones, dozens of white spots of different sizes suddenly appeared on the ground. The two went hand in hand, and when they got closer, they found that those light spots were indeed the stones the fuban had left before.
The dozens of stones, neatly arranged in three rows by the old jiao, each emitted a soft glow.
Slowly, in front of the stones, a figure gradually took shape. Actually, it looked like the same white-haired jiao man from before.
Mo Ran tried to ask: "Who are you?"
The man didn't answer. He looked at Chu Wanning and then at Mo Ran, then raised his hand wordlessly and pointed to the stones on the ground.
Mo Ran asked: "You want us to pick a stone?"
The white-haired jiao nodded, then stretched out a finger.
"Do you want us to pick one up?"
The white-haired jiao nodded. He shook his head again. He pointed to Mo Ran, then pointed to Chu Wanning.
Mo Ran understood: "Can we each only touch one?"
This time, the white-haired jiao nodded vigorously. He stopped moving then stared at the two people with wide eyes.
Mo Ran asked: "Shizun, should we listen to him?"
"Just do as he says. There's nothing else we can do right now."
So the two of them chose a stone to pick up. Who would have guessed that as soon as their fingertips touched a stone, the world spun and a bizarre light flashed in front of them. When everything came to a standstill, the endless blood red suddenly disappeared.
When their eyes adjusted, they had actually teleported to the Divine Weapon Treasury!
"Shizun!!"
"Shizun, A-Ran!!"
Xue Meng and Shi Mei were actually here. When they saw Chu Wanning, both of them were surprised and delighted, and they welcomed them over. Neither expected that the glowing stones were actually attached with a teleportation spell. Chu Wanning was still slightly nauseous because of the rapid spinning that had just happened. He held his forehead with one hand, but still held Mo Ran tightly with the other.
In the bloody lake, his and Mo Ran's hands had been interlocked and they never separated.
Chu Wanning's status meant that there was rarely an excuse for him to hold Mo Ran like this. Most of the time, he can only stand at a distance and watch his disciples' intimate interactions.
Therefore, the rare warmth in the palm of his hand caused him to cautiously cherish the feeling. . .
"Shi Mei!"
However, for him, it was a precious warmth. In the eyes of someone else, maybe it was just a passing sensation, maybe it was something not even worth mentioning, and, most likely, it wasn't even noticed.
The second he saw Shi Mei, Mo Ran naturally let go of his hand.
Chu Wanning's fingertips moved slightly. For a moment, it seemed like he wanted to pull him back.
But what's the reason?
He no longer had the courage to like others.
He didn't want to lose even a little bit of his meagre pride.
Looking at Mo Ran smiling so happily when he saw Shi Mei, and so naturally embracing Shi Mei and patting his hair.
Chu Wanning's fingers hung down.
Blushing slightly, with some embarrassment.
Fortunately.
His face was always indifferent, and the feelings of joy, anger and sadness were not so obvious.
It was probably because he was getting old and stiff. They had spun in the teleportation formation for a while, and his heart was a little cold.
But fortunately, his fingers still held a little heat.
With that residual warmth that would soon dissipate, he slowly stood up, fixed his expression, and cleaned up his appearance.
"Master, are you okay? Why is your face so pale. . ."
Chu Wanning nodded towards Xue Meng and said, "It's nothing."
After a pause, he asked again: "You were also sent by that merman*?"
*(T/N: Merman (鲛人) and jiao person (蛟人) are both pronounced "jiāo rén")
Before Xue Meng could speak, he heard a gurgling sound of bubbles. Chu Wanning turned back and suddenly saw half of a bloody face, followed by a clatter in the boiling sword-casting pool. Surprisingly, a man with a twisted body emerged!
This was by no means a mortal, or even a living person. No mortal could be dunked in scalding molten iron and survive. On the other hand, although this person's skin was scorched and his flesh was rotten, he was obviously still out of breath. Four chains were locked around his limbs, immobilizing him in the furnace and forcing him to suffer.
He slowly opened his eyes. He repeatedly bowed to the crowd, his eyes pleading, urging them to gather by the sword-casting pool.
He couldn't speak, but that didn't mean there was no way for him to communicate. They saw him waving his arms that were white from the exposed bones and draped in flesh and blood. The molten iron rolling in the pool suddenly made a small wave, and the wave slowly twisted into several lines of ancient text in the air.
Xue Meng was shocked: "What kind of words are these? How come I can't read any of them?"
Chu Wanning: "It's the Cangjie Ancient Script, which you haven't been taught yet."
Mo Ran said: "Then - what does it say?"
Chu Wanning stepped forward to carefully examine it and said: ". . . It's. . . a cry for help."
The Cangjie Ancient Script is said to be a heavenly script, which had been scattered across the earth. Only a few people know it. Even a master of this generation like Chu Wanning couldn't recognize all the words. But its general content was still discernable.
Chu Wanning looked at it carefully and slowly translated: "He said that he was the incarnated spirit of this willow tree. He's known as Zhaixin Liu*. When he was still a seedling, he was brought from the Seventh Heaven of the Heavenly Realm to earth by Gouchen the Exalted. After that, Gouchen abandoned the world for unknown reasons, and Zhaixin Liu never saw him again. He didn't know whether he was dead or alive."
*(T/N: 摘心柳 quite literally Heart Pluck Willow)
"But regardless of whether Gouchen is present or not, Zhaixin Liu has always followed his instructions for hundreds of thousands of years, guarding Jincheng Lake and taking care of the Divine Weapon Arsenal. Gradually, nourished by spiritual energy, he transformed into the illusion of a human form. And after that, everything was as usual, until one day, there was a -" Chu Wanning suddenly stopped and did not read further.
Mo Ran wondered: "What's wrong?"
"…I don't know these three words. It seems to be a person's name." Chu Wanning said, raising his hand and pointing at the complicated text. "In short, this person came to Jincheng Lake. He was powerful and ruthless. He killed all the creatures in the lake and controlled them with the Zhenlong Chess Formation. Zhaixin Liu was no exception."
Mo Ran immediately piped up: "80% chance this person is the fake Gouchen!"
When Zhaixin Liu heard what he said, his eyes lit up, and he immediately nodded his head.
". . . I guess I was right." Mo Ran smiled a little embarrassedly and scratched his head. "Haha, I didn't think I was that smart."
Chu Wanning glanced at him lightly and continued:
"For all these years, the willow has been in a lost state of unconsciousness, never able to awaken even for half a day. Fortunately, the other two sections of the willow that were once linked to it - Tianwen and Jiangui - have both awakened. With their power, they allowed Zhaixin Liu to temporarily regain his divine consciousness. Otherwise, he's afraid that he would have been out of control and killed and injured all of you present at this time."
"Everyone present" heard it, or they didn't believe it, or had lingering fears. The three teenagers raised their heads and stared at the spirit body in the sword-casting pool, not knowing what to think of its self-report.
Mo Ran said: "Senior Liu——"
Xue Meng: "Senior Liu?"
"What else should I call him? Senior Zhaixin?" Mo Ran gave Xue Meng a quick glance and continued. "I'll say something you may not like to hear. It's really hard to trust what you're saying."
Although Zhaixin Liu couldn't speak, he could understand what Mo Ran had said. He twisted his face around.
Mo Ran said: "First, you said that you were under fake Gouchen's illusion, and then you said that you regained your sanity because you were influenced by the aura of the awakened Tianwen and Jiangui. But Jiangui was given to me by the fake Gouchen. Wouldn't he know what the consequences of doing this would be?"
Zhaixin Liu shook his head and the words in front of Chu Wanning changed.
"I am a tree species from the Heavenly Realm. He doesn't know me well, and he doesn't know that divine weapons can affect my mind. He needed to use my strength to study the three forbidden techniques. In recent years, because I am running out of life, he is anxious and has been seeking a way to keep me alive. But I really don't want to live anymore. I'd rather die than help a tiger, but unfortunately I'm controlled by others, and I can't help myself. . ."
Chu Wanning read this and pondered slightly: "So he let Mo Ran come to the bottom of the lake. Mo Ran is the wood spirit essence. The calculation played by the fake Gouchen must be to combine the spiritual power of Mo Ran and Jiangui into one and sacrifice it to you."
Zhaixin Liu nodded.
Mo Ran still didn't understand: "But fake Gouchen said that there are two wood spirit essences, and Shizun is one of them, so why did he lock me up alone?"
Zhaixin Liu wrote: "Since ancient times, the best kind of sacrifices are the young ones, even more so for the tree spirit. In addition, the sacrifices need to be full of food and drink, the seven emotions and six desires have been satisfied, and then the life is taken away in the illusion of ignorant bliss. If not, the sacrificial heart has regrets, and if the resentment is great, it will hasten my withering."
When he said this, Mo Ran instantly thought of the fox demon in the secret room that turned into Chu Wanning.
It turned out that it was to satisfy his lust, just like fattening up a pig before slaughtering it so that it tasted delicious.
In this way, it made sense why he saw Chu Wanning, not Shi Mei. He cherishes and sympathized with Shi Mei, so he didn't dare play with him. In his lustful state, his desire for Chu Wanning was indeed much stronger than that for Shi Mei. . .
Chu Wanning saw Mo Ran look different and thought he was having anxiety and wanted to help him, so he asked, "What are you thinking about?"
"N-Nothing."
Seeing Mo Ran blush, Chu Wanning stared blankly for a moment. He suddenly understood, and abruptly stopped talking. After a while, he turned his head, somewhat annoyed.
Where does this kid have anxiety coming from? It turned out that he recalled the so-called "seven emotions and six desires", and he began to fantasize about it.
Chu Wanning flung his sleeves in anger. With a cold face, he muttered a reprimand: "Shameless."
Mo Ran: ". . ."
Fortunately, Chu Wanning didn't know who was satisfying his lust in the illusion. If he did, would he be so angry that he would flay him alive?
As he was thinking, suddenly, the ground of the Divine Weapons Arsenal trembled violently. Xue Meng said: "What's going on?"

Alright, here’s hoping this reaches the right people:

- However I have absolutely no clue where to start.
I have about twenty tabs open on my laptop of different MTLs and links and honestly I’m just running in circles. If anyone would be so kind as to help point me in the direction of any online material, if there’s any official translations I should just go buy first, whatever the case is. It’s been a while since I’ve had to deal with all this translation stuff, like I downloaded TGCF about 2-3 years ago now, and ya girl is lost. Send help ❤️

I’ve been stuck in 2ha fics for a minute and have seen a few metas and posts surrounding Mo Ran’s character, but something I don’t think comes across very well from the book to fanwork and (some) discussion is that Taxian-jun doesn’t exist without the long-hatred flower.
Like, I see a lot of modern au fics, for example, that tackle the Mo Ran 1.0 to 1.5 shift by having Mo Ran be disillusioned by Chu Wanning and that being his villain origin story, but what gets lost in that remix is that in canon, while Mo Ran was hurt by being whipped by his shizun, after he thought about it for a while, he decided to apologize to Chu Wanning to reconcile rather than hold a grudge. Because Mo Ran, at his core, is someone who is naturally good and would rather die than enact vengeance on others. That’s why both the timing and the effects of the flower are particularly evil: Mo Ran is cursed because he chose reconciliation over petty grudges and the curse forces him to go against his nature by holding onto said petty grudges to “repay” them to a ridiculous degree while erasing any good memory he has, which is what had previously fueled his will to live.
With that said, Mo Ran 1.0/Taxian-jun is able to transition to 1.5 and eventually 2.0 not because he realized that Chu Wanning loved him all along (as a disciple at this point), but because the Chu Wanning from the original universe nullified the effects of the flower, allowing him to finally see that Chu Wanning loved him all along and that he actually doesn’t want revenge. And we can see that effect of the nullification immediately! Taxian-jun becomes 16-year-old Mo Ran, finds out that Shi Mei, his “first love” is actually still alive at this point, and immediately decides to prioritize keeping Shi Mei alive over enacting revenge on Chu Wanning. Because at his core he’s motivated by love! And when Hua Binan brings Taxian-jun’s reanimated corpse into the new universe, his control is tenuous because Taxian-jun isn’t being motivated purely by spite anymore because the flower isn’t in effect anymore. This isn’t to say that Mo Ran was incapable of becoming Taxian-jun, but as the narrative proves, that is a version of him that only exists under mind-breaking abuse and duress, which only happened when he lived under the Mo family’s reign of abuse for years before finally snapping and then once again under the effects of a curse that rewrote his memories to convince him that he was living under mind-breaking abuse and duress. Without those conditions, Mo Ran always chooses hope and love, and even as he looks back on those moments where he reigned terror, he wishes he could have chosen/been afforded death instead (much to Chu Wanning’s upset). So all this to say that Mo Ran isn’t saved by realizing he was living under a misunderstanding; he is saved by having the thing leeching out all of the good in him destroyed.
(Also on a smaller note, Taxian-jun isn’t uneducated because he was on the street for so long and therefore “too old” to be properly educated. Taxian-jun is uneducated because all of his memories of learning were good memories tied to Chu Wanning, thus they got erased. Mo Ran 2.0 re-educates himself in his late teens/early 20s because the problem was always the flower, not some “inherent” inferiority he was stuck with from his upbringing or an unwillingness to learn.)

It's always intriguing to me how a subset of people reading 2ha reinvent this opinion, because of what assumptions it implies they're making about other readers with all the confidence of having only read a fraction of the story.
Like, inevitably, some subset of people who read 2ha constantly believe that basically all the other readers, AND THE AUTHOR HERSELF, are telling them "ignore the nice one, pick the mean one," and they assert this as if it's never occurred to them that maybe the 2/3rds of the book they haven't read yet might contain information and reveals about these characters that will change their views.
I guess I just don't get it? To me the way 2ha is framed, in those early chapters I was definitely thinking "I don't get ranwan yet..." but knowing what others said and who the main ship was I felt like the whole book had a huge "wait for iiiiiit" flag on it.
I guess I just can't fathom reading a book the way I see some people read 2ha. It's honestly an intriguing insight in some respects into a very different way of engaging with source material than I do.
Anyway, for people who've read the entire book, what to ship is absolutely a matter of opinion. You do you.
For people who haven't... weird flex tbh. Definitely recommend you revisit this post around chapter 285/290.

他趴在床边,看着外头的飘雪,过耳都是呼啸的风声,他忽然觉得自己的人生也像此刻湍急的风,昨日种种都流逝掉。
“He leaned over the bed and watched the drifting snow outside, and all he could hear was the howling wind; he suddenly felt that his own life was like the roaring wind at this moment, flowing away with everything from the past.”
- 2ha chapter 279, "The Rest of Our Lives Given to This Snowy Night"
所有的一切都像覆了一层雪,又一层雪,大雪在他的颅海内飘零覆压,想要把过往的痕迹一点点地都遮盖掉。
"It was as if everything was covered in snow, one layer of snow after another; heavy snow drifted and pressed the inside of his head, wanting to cover up traces of the past little by little."

Chapter 40 - This Venerable One Be Damned
The weapon contained in Changxiang Si was the same as Tianwen, or rather, a golden willow vine identical to Tianwen. From the pattern to the mechanisms, it was all the same.
To yearn unwittingly breaks the willow branch.
Chu Wanning looked uncertain. He handed the bunched-up willow vine to Mo Ran, then condensed light in his palm and summoned Tianwen. When the two were compared, it was like looking in a mirror. There were no differences.
No one expected such a thing to happen. Even Mo Ran couldn't believe his eyes -- as someone who had been whipped thousands of times by Tianwen in his previous life, he would never have expected Jincheng Lake would actually give him an identical weapon.
What's going on here?
Everyone's eyes turned to Gouchen standing beside them.
Gouchen also looked very surprised. He said, ". . . In the human realm, there are actually two wood spirit essences?"
Xue Meng asked: "What does wood spirit essence mean?"
"Ah, that's right." Gouchen said, "There are five elements in this world, and you all know that. Everyone who cultivates a spiritual core will have one or two attributes. The most talented person in the human realm is the essence of that attribute, such as the Wushan Goddess, who is the earth spirit's essence. However, generally speaking, within a generation, only one essence of the same attribute can exist - and the wood spirit's essence is already in the human realm. I gave him the weapon of the first wood spirit many years ago."
As he spoke, his eyes fell on Chu Wanning.
"When I was casting the five top-level divine weapons, I originally intended to cast only one of each attribute. The other four pieces did not have any mistakes during the casting process except for the wood spirit divine weapon, which broke into two pieces in the furnace."
"I said it was heaven's will, so I made the two pieces of willow into two weapons. But I still thought that it was impossible for these two weapons to find their masters at the same time, so I gave one of them to Ji Baihua and let him make a brocade box, just in case any miscreants wanted to take it. But I didn't expect. . ."
Gouchen shook his head and was about to continue. Suddenly, the willow vine in Mo Ran's hand burst out into a string of colourful red flower bursts and fire. The flowing golden shine began to gradually transform and finally became a blazing red. The thoughts in Mo Ran's head were so muddled that he didn't even think when he exclaimed: "Ah! What the hell!"
Chu Wanning was going to stop him, but it was too late.
So Gouchen and Chu Wanning looked at Mo Ran with pity, and Mo Ran quickly knew why they would look at him like this. In fact, he had already thought about it himself:
The first time a divine weapon emitted a different colored glow, it meant that it had submitted to its master and wanted the master to give it a name.
Unfortunately, it was too late. On the silver handle of the willow vine, three strong and powerful characters slowly appeared —
Ah! Jiangui*.
*(T/N: 啊!见鬼)
Divine weapon "Ah! What the hell".
Mo Ran: ". . . . . . . . . . . . Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!”
Although Xue Meng and Shi Mei didn't know the rules of naming divine weapons, they saw the scene in front of them, and they all understood after a moment. Xue Meng held his stomach and laughed so hard that tears flowed out of his eyes: "Only you can make this kind of name appear, hahahaha. Good name, good name. Shizun has Tianwen, you have 'Ah! Jiangui', ahahahahahaha."
Now that Mo Ran had his divine weapon, Xue Meng and Shi Mei had also picked their favourite weapons - Xue Meng chose a long sword, and Shi Mei had a piccolo, but neither of their weapons ever emitted a different shine, apparently not yet tamed and refusing to submit to the two men's control.
But it doesn't really matter, they could always think of something.
So each of them was in a good mood. In the evening, a banquet was held on a spring night. Gouchen had never brought humans to Jincheng Lake, and he kindly invited them to stay for one night before leaving. This was the first time he had entertained mortals, and naturally, he did his best. On the table, the wine flowed freely, the wine and cheese were sweet yet bitter, the drums and music were full of joy, and the guests and host were all slightly drunk.
After the banquet was over, Gouchen ordered the attendants to take the guests to the room to arrange sleeping accommodations and to rest for the night.
The guest room was next to the Divine Weapon Treasury. When he saw the huge tree, Mo Ran thought of the "Jiangui" he had just gotten, so he couldn't help but summon the willow vine and take a closer look.
To yearn unwittingly breaks the willow branch.
What did the fox spirit Ji Baihua notice? Why did he say such a thing and what did he mean by saying this?
After all was said and done, the evening wine had been drunk, and with it, his thoughts were not so clear. He just thought it was very strange. If Changxiang Si didn't malfunction, then why did Chu Wanning unlock the box?
He certainly didn't like Chu Wanning. As for Chu Wanning being deeply in love with him. . . it was a big joke.
While thinking about it, he looked back at his shizun.
Unexpectedly, Chu Wanning was also looking at him. Their eyes met and Mo Ran felt a slight tremor in his heart as if he had been stabbed by something small and sharp, then it was flooded with something bittersweet. Before he could think, he had already smiled at Chu Wanning. But this feeling in his heart was fleeting, and he soon regretted it.
It was all so annoying. Why is it that sometimes when he saw him, he felt so calm and comfortable?
Chu Wanning described it as indifference, but the moment he saw Mo Ran summon Jiangui, he also called Tianwen.
He walked towards Mo Ran.
Jiangui didn't seem to be very good-tempered. Feeling the approach of another powerful wood spirit, it sparked and scattered scarlet flowers and fire. From time to time, a few bursts and splashes fall on Xue Meng. It had a feisty attitude.
On the other hand, Tianwen in Chu Wanning's hand seemed to sense a similar aura, but it had gotten used to living with Chu Wanning all this time. It had been well worn, so although it is also full of wariness, the golden light around it was not as restless as Jiangui. It gradually brightened and, seeing that its master hadn't stopped it, only then did it become unusually dazzling, as if it had made up its mind to let "Jiangui" see what a good weapon should be like, ready to fight with a steady attitude.
The two divine weapons were originally one.
Now, one is a fledgling, and the other has been through a hundred battles.
A handful of red light splashed all over, like an angry little boy, jumping up and down; A handful of golden light overflowed, like the most dignified master, reserved and proud.
Chu Wanning looked at the willow vine in his hand. He pondered for a while and looked through his slender eyelashes across the secret room to look at Jiangui. He said: "Mo Ran."
"Shizun?"
"Pick up your. . ." The name "Jiangui" seemed to be a bit shameful. Chu Wanning paused and said: "Pick up your willow vine and look at me."
Mo Ran's mind was full of mush and he couldn't pick one thought apart from another. He was at a loss for words. He pinched his brow and smiled bitterly: "Don't joke about it, Shizun. Give me a break."
"I'll give you three lashes."
"I've never used a willow vine before. . ."
"Ten lashes."
"But --"
Chu Wanning didn't talk anymore. A dazzling golden light slashed out with a wave of his hand! Mo Ran turned pale with fright. His fear of Tianwen ran deep in his bones. He immediately raised his hand and used Jiangui to block it. The two willow vines tore through the wind and snow in the air. They soared up, like two dragons in flight, the friction causing a string of gold and red sparks!
Although he hadn't learned how to use this special weapon, he had watched Chu Wanning's moves for a long time. Mo Ran was a talented person. Surprisingly, he was barely able to resist Chu Wanning's attack.
The two fought in the cold pool for dozens of rounds. Although Chu Wanning had moved into the water, Mo Ran responded excellently, and it was really beyond his expectations.
The gold of Tianwen and the red of Jiangui filled the sky amidst waves of water. The moves were gorgeous, and the shifting colours in the wind were brilliant. The lake was torn apart by the fierce vine light. Finally, gold and red were entwined as one, evenly matched, and it was difficult to separate them!
Chu Wanning's eyes showed admiration, but Mo Ran was already tired of sparing. He was exhausted and panting, so he didn't see the look in the other's eyes.
Chu Wanning said: "Tianwen, return."
The golden willow vine, which was still ruthless and rigid, suddenly softened as if the ice had turned into spring water. It scattered into spots of light, obediently melting back into Chu Wanning's palm.
Mo Ran still persisted with Jiangui, bursting with its blazing flames. He panted for a while before he simply sat on the snow, his expression full of grievances: "No more games. Shizun, you bully."
Chu Wanning: ". . . I said ten lashes."
Mo Ran roguishly yelled: "Ten lashes wasn't enough. You let me have a hundred lashes. Oh, my hand, my arm, it's going to break. Shi Mei, Shi Mei, rub it for me." He generally said a lot of words, accompanied by Xue Meng's ridicule and Shi Mei's persuasion.
Chu Wanning didn't say anymore, just glancing at them quietly.
He didn't know if it was an illusion but in the blue water of the cold water, the corners of Chu Wanning's mouth seemed slightly raised, and it seemed almost like a soft smile, but it was gone in the blink of an eye. He turned his head aimlessly and looked at the thousands of cords hanging from the large tree in the heart of the mansion with his head in his hands. He didn't know what to think.
It was night and Mo Ran sat in the guest room that belonged to him. The room was covered with fine, soft, pure white sand. the walls were painted blue and covered with a barrier, reflecting the sparkling light like seawater. The window was half open, and the pearl curtain hung gently in the evening breeze. A lamp made of night pearls was lit on the table, illuminating the room warmly and soothingly.
In the very center of the room was a large shell covered with soft satin. The satin was very delicate and soft. Mo Ran lay comfortably on the bed. He summoned Jiangui, holding it in his hand, unable to look away. But he was probably too tired to play with it for too long because he drifted off to sleep.
Jiangui pressed on his chest, pulsing with a faint red light as if it fell into a deep sleep with its master. . .
He didn't know how long he had slept, but when he woke up again, the first thing he felt was the cold, followed by a strong inexplicable pain on his wrist.
He gasped, covered his head, and sat up slowly. The return to consciousness made the unfamiliar pain on his wrist even more vivid. He was shocked to find that he had been cut on his wrist at some point, the blood had clotted into a hideous, bloody cocoon.
What happened?
-- Where is this??!
Mo Ran's eyes widened.
Gradually coming to his senses, he found himself in a completely unfamiliar dark stone room. There was a small ventilation opening at the top of the stone room. The cold lake light squeezed in through this small opening, barely illuminating the narrow room, which was less than a foot wide. The green-gray stone walls were damp and sticky, with a thin sheen in the faint light.

Chapter Three: This Venerable One's Shige
Huh, since his soul has traveled back in time, perhaps his cultivation has returned in time too?
Mo Ran started to work his magic and felt the spiritual energy in his body growing. He had plenty of energy, but it was not as strong as it had been. This solved his question; the cultivation prowess of his past had not returned to him.
It’s not a big deal. His talents could reach the Heavens, he was someone blessed with innate talent; he could learn how to cultivate all over again. No matter. This rebirth was a blessing even if there were a few shortcomings, that was only to be expected. Mo Ran thought it through, and quickly swallowed his gloom and unpleasantness, appearing like the fifteen year old he should be, happily preparing for his return to the cultivation world.
It was the middle of the summer. There were horse-drawn carriages speeding past, their wheels rolling up dust, and nobody seemed to pay Mo Ran any attention.
There were only the occasional village women, taking a break from their field labors, who raised their heads, wiping their sweat to stare at the exceptionally handsome youth.
Mo Ran, in return, smiled unstrained and charming, shameless as the women blushed bright red and turned away from his gaze.
Mo Ran came to Wuchang Town just as night was falling. The town was close to Sisheng Peak, outlined by a blood red sun with burning clouds of dusk lining the towering peaks. He felt a little hungry when he touched his stomach, so he entered a restaurant carelessly, looked at the red and black dish sign in front of the cabinet, knocked on the counter, and said quickly: “Shopkeeper, can I have some bonbon chicken? And some sliced beef tripe, two bottles of white wine and a plate of roast beef.”
This area was a popular place for weary travelers and was bustling with activity. There was a storyteller energetically shaking his fan and telling the tales of Sisheng Peak excitedly, with spit flying everywhere.
Mo Ran chose a private seat and listened as he ate.
"As everyone knows, our cultivation world is divided into two areas: upper cultivation and lower cultivation. Today we will talk about the most remarkable sect in the lower cultivation world, the Pinnacle of Life and Death, Sisheng Peak. This is where we are currently. A hundred years ago, Wuchang Town was a desolate and turbulent poor town. Because it was only a bit away from the entrance of the ghost world, the villagers were afraid to go out when it was dark. Travelers who needed to go out would throw fragrant ash paper money, while chanting, ‘People are kept away by mountains, ghosts are kept away by joss papers,’ while passing as quickly as they could. But today, our town is no different from other places, and it all depends Sisheng Peak. This powerful Sect is proud and glorious, built right at the entrance of the ghost gate, lying between the yin and yang realms. Although it was established not too long ago, but..."
This sort of history was something that Mo Ran had listened to so many times that his ears had automatically learned to tune it out, so with a lack of interest, he began to stare out the window. It just so happened that a stall was set up downstairs, and a few foreigners dressed as cultivators were carrying a cage covered with black cloth, and were playing tricks on the street.
This is much more interesting than the old man's storytelling.
Mo Ran’s attention shifted from the tale towards the show.
"Take a look, take a look, this is a cub of the ancient fierce beast, Pixiu, who was captured by me. Now it is as good as a child, and can juggle and do arithmetic! It is not easy to be a chivalrous man, so spare this master some money— if you can’t spare money, then stick around and watch as the pixie perform some mathematics!”
The cultivator priests lifted the black cloth in a rush, revealing inside the cage a few bear bodied monsters with human faces.
Mo Ran: "............"
These were furry, pitiful, ugly looking puppies! How could anyone claim that they are pixiu?
This bull-headed liar really thought that he could get away with this? The only people who would believe it are people who don’t have brains for shit.
But Mo Ran was proven wrong. Twenty or thirty donkey brains gathered around them to watch the show, cheering and applauding from time to time. The lively energy, even the people in the restaurant couldn’t help but look out, making Mr. Storyteller lose his audience.
"Now the lord of Sisheng Peak, this is a prestigious and famous—"
"Okay!!! One more tale!!!”
The storyteller was greatly encouraged and followed the prestige, and saw that the guest was flushed with excitement, but it was obviously not he who had captured the attentions of the travelers.
"Oh, the Pixiu can do mathematics?!”
"Ahhhh, so awesome!"
"Okay! Amazing! Can we see the Pixiu juggling an apple?!”
The people all over the building chuckled and gathered by the windows to watch the excitement below. The storyteller continued pitifully: “What had brought this Lord his acclaim is his fan, he..."
"Ahahaha, that brave pixiu with the lightest coat almost got that apple, you see? It’s still rolling on the ground!"
Mr. Storyteller wiped his face with a sweat towel, his lips trembled with anger.
Mo Ran pursed his lips,  smirked and called leisurely behind the bead curtain: "Don't talk about the Pinnacle of Life and Death. Sing some of the "Eighteen Touches", and it will surely pull everyone back."
The storyteller didn't know that the person behind the curtain was a young master of Sisheng Peak himself, and he said with some sense of dignity: "Rough and vulgar words have no place in such a hall.”
Mo Ran only smirked before laughing: “Oh is this supposed to be an elegant hall? What sort of embarrassment are you.”
And then suddenly, there was a great commotion from below.
“What a fast horse!”
“Must be a cultivator from Sisheng Peak!”
There was a lot of discussion, just as a dark steed rushed from the direction of Sisheng Peak, and rushed into the crowds like lightning!
There were two people sitting on the horse. One was wearing a black hat and a black cloak, covered up so one couldn’t tell their age or sex. The other was a woman in her 30s and 40s with rough hands and a weathered face.
The woman cried when she saw those human bears. She scrambled off the horse, stumbled and rushed over, hugged one of the human bears, knelt down, and howled: "My son!!! what--"
The people around were dumbfounded. Someone scratched his head and murmured, "Yeah? Isn't this the cub of the ancient beast Pixiu? How does this woman call it a child?"
“Was this a female Pixiu?”
"Oh, that's so amazing, this mother has grown into a human form!"
The villagers here were ignorant, talking nonsense here and there, but Mo Ran instead pondered.
According to legend, some Taoist priests would go to kidnap children, then pull out the children’s tongue so that they could not speak, then scald the children’s skins with boiling water, and stick the animal skins on them while they were bloody. After the blood coagulated, the fur and the child were glued together, and it looked like a monster. These children can't speak, can't write, and can only be bullied by others. With the performance of the "Pixiu plan" juggling, if they resist, they will be beaten by clubs.
No wonder he couldn't feel the slightest demon spirit near these beasts. These "Pixiu" were not monsters at all, but living people...
While Mo Ran was thinking to himself, the dark cloaked figure said something to the Taoist priests. Hearing this, all the Taoist priests were furious in an instant, yelling, "Apologize? Your grandfather doesn't know how to write that fucking word!” "What's so great about Sisheng Peak?” “I’ll show you what happens to busybodies!” He jumped on to beat the black cloak.
“Aiyooo…”
Seeing the disciple being beaten, Mo Ran only laughed. "So fierce."
He had no intention of helping. In his previous life, he really hated how the Sect seemed to help just about anybody, like righteous idiots who would even rush up to save the kittens of Mrs. Wang who were stuck up a tree. Just about any inconvenience, any signs of trouble, the entire Sect from the Sect Leader to the bondsmen, every single one of them was a righteous idiot.
There are so many unfair things in the world already. Why should you care for anything that wasn’t your business? It was enough to tire anyone to death.
"It's a fight, it's a fight! Ha! What a powerful punch!”
These people love to watch fights, but Mo Ran didn’t care to watch. He’s seen plenty of bloodshed, and whatever happening right now was nothing more consequential than a fly’s buzz. He lazily dusted the peanut crumbs from his clothes, got up and left.
Downstairs, the cultivators were fighting with the black cloaked figure, the victor was indistinguishable, their sword aura swishing, just as Mo Ran crossed his arms, leaning against the entrance of the wine shop, just glanced at it, and couldn't help but sigh.
For shame.
Everyone from Sisheng Peak was a fierce fighter, each the equal of ten men, so this black clothed person was quite pathetic. Even when he was dragged against his horse, surrounded and kicked, he was still someone holding back his true strength.
This figure only called out, but wouldn’t fight back.
Instead, he shouted weakly: "The gentleman does not speak with his fists but with his words. I am trying to speak the truth to you, so why will you not listen?”
The cultivators:“………………”
Mo Ran:“……………………”
What the hell was this cultivator thinking? He’s already so soundly beaten and yet still preaches this peaceful nonsense? Has his brains been squished like mantou, empty inside?
Though Mo Ran’s face twisted then, his head spinning for a second. He held his breath, his eyes widened with awe — that voice …
“Shi Mei!” Mo Ran yelled before running forward, his heart hammering in his chest. He allowed one of his spiritual attacks to fly, knocking easily away five jianghu cultivator swindlers before kneeling on the ground to help the dark cloaked figure up, noticing that his clothes were covered with muddy boot prints. Mo Ran’s voice couldn’t help but stumble —
“Shi Mei, is that you?!”

2ha songs are so funny cuz most of them have a relatively upbeat melody and a pleasant instrumental but then you read the lyrics and they’re like “THREE THOUSAND STEPS COVERED IN BLOOD, LOVE HATE AND OBSESSION RUINING OUR DESTINIES—“

Snippet of C149 of Erha
(Just posting various translated snippets of my favorite scenes, lol)
>>> SPOILERS
Xue Zhengyong pondered for a while before saying, "But I feel that Meng-er isn't wrong, I actually spoke to Yuheng before about finding a cultivation partner."
"Ah?" Xue Meng was stunned, "Dad, you spoke to Shizun about this? He didn't get mad at you?"
"He did." Xue Zhengyong smiled wryly, "He threw me out."
Mdm Wang : "......"
Xue Meng laughed loudly. "I knew it, my Shizun is a celestial to his core, he's not a god but is more like one than a god. Someone like him would have cut off all worldly desires long ago, what would he want a cultivation partner for?"
Xue Zhengyong sighed and was obviously still reluctant to accept it. He was about to continue debating his son on the topic, when suddenly Mdm Wang covered her mouth with her sleeve and whispered, "Husband, stop talking, Elder Yuheng is here."
In the lingering morning mist, Chu Wan Ning stepped on the damp stones as he slowly walked over, his sleeves swaying.
He was wearing a two-piece robe. It was a stately moon-white color, with golden silk embroidered in the hem. As he walked, the gold thread seemed to subtly flow in the sunlight. His hair was held up by a single white-jade hairstick, with a red gem carved in the shape of a plum flower adorning the end. His entire countenance was of simplicity tinged with gravity, an aloofness within his coldness.
At that moment, Xue Zhengyong suddenly felt a little helpless, his mouth opened, then closed.
He thought, perhaps Xue Meng was right.
This kind of person, what kind of woman would be able to stand by his side without being swallowed by his light, without being buried by his presence?
The god walked into the mortal realm, came to a stop in front of the mountain gate, and looked at Xue Zhengyong while frowning.
"Respected leader."
"Haha, Yuheng, the clothes suit you."
Chu Wan Ning lifted his hand, and an extremely complex looking accessory dangled in mid-air. He said, "This accessory that was sent together with the robes, it seems to be different from normal."
"Ah, that is made using the string art of An Lin, what about it?"
The godly daozhang who was far out of the reach of others, slightly wrinkled his brow, and said, "It's too difficult, I don't know how to tie it, could respected leader teach me."
Xue Zhengyong : "......"
After teaching Chu Wan Ning three times, he still could not do it, finally giving up. Xue Meng couldn't look on any longer and volunteered to assist his Shizun with it, and completed it quickly. Chu Wan Ning looked at it and was somewhat surprised, praising, "Not bad."
Standing to one side, Xue Zhengyong couldn't help but think again. He thought, my god, if this kind of person doesn't find a cultivation partner, wouldn't he someday die because he didn't know how to take care of his daily life?
