Opening Line Tag Meme.
Opening Line Tag Meme
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line. Then tag 10 of your favorite authors!
Thanks @yeswevegotavideo for tagging me (and for being one of my oldest fandom friends)!
1. Spellbound. (Gotham, I Married a Witch AU).  Edward tries to frown as his body is cut loose, stripped, and arranged on a pile of stones near the water.
2. Hideaway. (Gotham, Coffee Shop AU).  When Hell finally arrives in Gotham, it freezes rather than burns.
3. Call It Whatever You Want. (Martin and Lewis, RPF).  Pain in his chest -- that's how it starts.
4. Safe Haven. (Batman: The Animated Series).  It starts as a passing comment between a few of the staff: it’s been an unusually quiet evening at the lounge.
5. De-escalation. (Gotham, Future Fic).  “Did you want me to radio your husband before we go in, Mr. Cobblepot?”
6. The Sense of Movement. (Pacific Rim, Pre-Canon). “You’re sure this is going to be okay?” Vanessa asks, brow furrowed in a way that makes Karla’s lungs feel like they’re filled with helium.
7. Start Spreading the News. (SNL Weekend Update, Role Reversal AU).  “David Allan Zolesky (b. 10 April) and Stefon Stardust Zolesky (B. 23 August) are American film and television screenwriters and producers.
8. Thrift Shop. (Re-Animator, Canon Divergence).  The warm and oddly friendly glow from Solstice lasts a full week; a time of plenty that leaves behind a frigid winter and a dwindling cupboard.
9. Titania and Oberon. (Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Canon Divergence).  Roxanne learns the truth about Ronnie when they’re “playing doctors and nurses.”
10. Dress Code. (Pacific Rim, Zine Entry).  Newton Geiszler was used to dirty looks from people he didn’t know.
11. The Book of Images. (Pacific Rim, Pre and Post-Canon).  Things were different after Mt. Fuji
12. The Bluest Sea. (Gotham, Pacific Rim AU).  Gotham is on the east coast -- the wrong side of the country for the apocalyptic war that has usurped all major conflicts in the last few years.
13. Paramour. (Re-Animator, Canon Divergence).  "Dan, you're familiar with Ward's scheduling I take it?"
14. Hover and Twist.  (Gotham, Post Canon).  Compared with previous abductions, it’s been a fairly painless afternoon… if only because Ed can’t immediately recall most of it.
15. Reunification. (Gotham, Post Canon).  “The Eldridge Street Bridge is open.”
16. Girls. (Gotham, Future Fic).  From the second she closed her eyes, she was back in the car.
17. Almost Done. (Gotham, Missing Scene).  Is it done? Butch is getting really tired of that question.
18. Damage Control. (Re-Animator, Canon Divergence).  The hospital swaps Dan’s shirt for a gown but neglects to provide her with underwear.
19. Complementary. (Gotham, Missing Scene).  This might as well happen, Ed thinks.
20. Songbook. (Gotham, Missing Scene).  Oswald sorted bolts at his ally’s behest.
What they have in common: well, “positionality” seems to be the word of the day! They’re all third person limited narration. Most of them start with positioning that limited narrator in the setting or their focus on something a specific person is saying to them. In the latter case, the person talking is usually their love interest (or someone referring to said love interest): the object of the narrator’s focus and desire.
Favorite Opening Line: Oddly, Titania and Oberon. It establishes the characters, their relationship, and the immediate plot well. And it was fun to write a reveal that 1) occurs at the beginning of the story (in contrast to the film, where it occurs in the last ten minutes), and 2) results in unwavering devotion and acceptance (unlike in the film... because 1970; and it was written by Roger Ebert and Russ Meyer).
