♡ 911 rewatch ♡
→ 3.12: 'Fools' I just wanna be like everyone else. I know. But you're not. Because I have CP. No. Because...nobody can do everything. And yes, there are things in life that you're not gonna be able to do. And there's other stuff that you are gonna be able to do, but it's gonna be a lot harder than it is for the other kids because you have CP. I'm sorry. I won't skateboard again. It's not about the skateboarding. I just don't want you to be scared. You tried something, and it didn't work out. Maybe the next time it does. [...] I don't want you to ever stop trying. But maybe… until you get a little older, maybe we try new things together, okay? Okay. You're not like any other kid. You're my kid. I love you more than anything in this world. I love you too, Dad.

Genuine Beer in 9-1-1
There’s been a lot of talk about the Genuine beer that Buck and Eddie keep drinking, so I thought I’d make a post about it! But if we're talking about Genuine beer, I think it's only fair that we look at all of the other beer they use in the show too.
Just a quick note before we start: I don't think their prop department makes any of these. There are vendors that specialize in making props like this, and at least five of these come from the same company.
9-1-1 has a lot of commonly recurring brands of prop beer. They tend to use multiple brands at a time for variety, peaking at six used throughout 3b. There's also a bunch of one-offs they've only used once or twice that I didn't bother including here, and there's some that they've only used in the backgrounds, but I couldn't really read the labels.
They didn't really use prop beer bottles until Hen Begins (2.09), halfway through season 2. Most of the characters are shown drinking wine until Buck, Actually (2.08), and aside from one scene at the end of 1.10, those who do drink beer use a glass.
So without further ado: the beers of 9-1-1.
Tumblr media
Blind Fox Ale is used mostly in seasons 2 and 3. As of 6.15, it's tied with Genuine for most uses, with main characters drinking it nine times. It's shown on screen even more in the background, and pops up in 5a when Michael's drinking one.
Tumblr media
Alexander’s Famous Ale was used in a two episodes during season 2: Chim drinks it twice in Chimney Begins (2.12) and Athena and Hen drink it in Ocean's 9-1-1 (2.15). Red was drinking it at the bar in The One that Got Away (3.16). It's frequently used in the background by extras.
Tumblr media
Grand Ale first popped up in Kids Today (3.01) and stayed through season 3. Chim drank it twice, Michael had it at a Grant-Nash family dinner, and Buck also drank it in Fools (3.12).
Tumblr media
Cerveza Extra was used mostly in season three. Chimney was drinking one at the party for Buck in Kids Today (3.01), Buck had one sitting in front of him at the end of The Searchers (3.03), Chimney was making his way through several in Seize the Day (3.11) and Buck has one in front of him during the party at Eddie's later that episode. Buck also served it to Connor in Peru in Buck Begins (4.05).
Tumblr media
Mendoza Lager was added in season 5 and these are the three times we've seen it: Buck drinks it in Outside Looking In (5.11) while the team is at the bar, he drinks it again on the balcony with Maddie in Starting Over (5.18), and in Tomorrow (6.06), Hen was drinking it when she first met Karen.
Tumblr media
Rio Negro has been used a few times, and so far, Eddie’s the only main character who drinks it. Lena had one with him at the junkyard fight in Rage (3.05), he had one or two at the bar in Seize the Day (3.11) (and extras were also holding it during the party at his house later that episode), and he also drank it in Texas with his family in Hero Complex (5.17). As far as I can tell, this is the only beer that's this character-specific.
Tumblr media
Tux’s Red Ribbon was used once in season 1 at the very end of A Whole New You (1.10), when Chim was hosting a party. I didn't notice it again until In Another Life (6.11), where it was the only brand of beer anyone drank in Buck's coma dream. I'm wondering if they used it in the coma dream because they don't normally use it, to subtly emphasize that things are wrong, or if we're going to see it again sometime soon.
Which brings me to Genuine.
The first time I found Genuine being used is back in Hen Begins (2.09). It’s in the scene where she goes out with Athena, Bethanne (the female cop), and Casey (the gay firefighter). She’s the only one at their table drinking Genuine, though Casey also has a beer in a pint glass. That extra behind her looks like they might have it too.
Tumblr media
Note: this isn't the only brand to be used once earlier and then resurrected later; Tux's was used once in season one, and then again in season 6.
After that the show used other brands and I didn’t see it again until Fear-a-Phobia (5.13) when Chim and Hen drink it during their reunion.
Tumblr media
Buck and Eddie drink it in Let the Games Begin (6.01).
Tumblr media
The guy who blew up his cheating neighbor in Crash & Learn (6.02) was drinking Genuine.
Tumblr media
Buck gave one to Connor in Recovery (6.12). It wasn’t in his fridge a few scenes before when Maddie was stocking it for him (meaningful or continuity error?).
Tumblr media
Eddie had it in his fridge later in Recovery and grabbed two for him and Buck, but drank both himself when Buck fell asleep.
Tumblr media
Buck and Eddie were both drinking one while helping Chris with homework in Mixed Feelings (6.13).
Tumblr media
And Eddie had it again at the poker game. (Many of the extras around them were also drinking Genuine.)
Tumblr media
Eddie also had it in his fridge while on the phone with his mom in 6.15, and it's still there when he calls her again at the end.
Tumblr media
It's shown in Maddie and Chimney's fridge at the end of 6.16.
Tumblr media
All that kind of makes it seem like we're seeing it a lot more often lately, like maybe it's a sign of something building. Of the three beer brands we've seen the main characters drink in season 6, Genuine shows up the most by a wide margin. Mendoza Lager has only been in one scene, and Tux's in two (both in the coma dream).
So is it a sign of something being genuine? Uncovering something genuine? Their prop beer budget got cut and they can only afford one brand? Just the latest favorite in their rotation of prop beers and it doesn't mean anything at all? You be the judge!
(It seems like they try to cycle through brands for the core seven characters to drink every season or two. The ones that were most prevalent in seasons 2 and 3 still occasionally pop up in the background in later seasons, especially in bar scenes, or for characters like Michael and Red. And once you notice them, then you too might find yourself pointing excitedly when you spot a rogue Alexander's Famous Ale on a passing server's tray for the first time in two seasons.)
Bonus unrelated discovery from my search: Back in Hen Begins, Hen had the frog sponge holder first.

From the mouth of the offering came the grating squeal of vox-static overlaid with the wails of a thousand forms of ecstasy and agony. Toramid worked the dials on one of the various foul devices attached to the offering, the gauntlets of his power armor making the task particularly troublesome. As he adjusted the dials the pitch and tenor of the static changed, but the wails stubbornly refused to resolve themselves into speech.
“By the gods,” he grumbled, “was it always this hard to get reception outside The Eye?”
“Abadon’s rift has made everything less clear” Caidius replied, “if we miss this because of his little ego-trip he will answer to the gods!”
Toramid grunted and, having grown tired of his task, struck the top of the device with a ceramite clad fist. The wailing immediately resolved into comprehensible, if guttural, language.
“BOYZ AN’ BEAKIEZ!! WELCOME TA DA BIGGEST BADDEST SCRAP IN DA EYE!! IZ BULK BOGINZ!!”
A second, only marginally more intelligible voice interrupted the first.
“And I am Bo’Beehena!” The second announcer shouted, “We shall now take you to the ring as we introduce our warriors!”
There comes a great roar of approval and a new voice, clear and almost melodic when compared to the first two, speaks with easy confidence.
“Standing at 3.94 meters and weighing in at 734 pounds of pure warp infused might! The one eyed lord of sorcerers! The Crimson King! You know him! You love to hate him! The man who has never done anything wrong! Magnus! The! Red!”
Jeers and shouts of approval swirl into a whitenoise for a moment before settling.
“Now, Magnus. You know why we’re here today don’t you?” The referee asks.
“I do.” The sorcerer lord replied, “Some trumped up servitor thinks he can tell me how I am to adorn my legion.”
“Do you have anything to say to your opponent before we bring him out?”
“Indeed I do.”
Magnus’ voice grew louder as, presumably, he was handed whatever passed for a microphone in The Eye of Terror.
“Listen you dusty old skeleton! If you think napping for a few million years means the galaxy is yours to do with as you wish, then I will be forced to show you the error of your ways!”
The crowd roared but with an expectant undercurrent and the announcer introduced The Crimson King’s opponent.
“Standing at 3.12 meters tall and weighing in at 1,200 pounds, the master of the Infinite Empire and a new comer to the Warp Wrestling Federation! He came a very long way to be here today! Please give it up for Szarekeh!!!”
The crowd, predictably, booed the necron royal.
“Szarekeh, I hear you’ve taken some issue with the garb of the Thousand Sons. Is this true?”
“Of course!” came the surprisingly passionate, yet still clearly mechanical voice of the monarch, “These warp-stained fools have made a mockery of my culture long enough! I find them and their so-called “sorcery” repellent and their butchery of the glorious necron aesthetic offensive. I see no recourse save blood!”
“Well alright then! If that’s all then fighters to your corners!”
The two voices from earlier in the broadcast returned.
“Truly this will be a battle worthy of the Blood God!” Bo’Beehena cried.
“BUT FIRST WEZ GOTZ A WORD FROM OUR SPONSA’Z!”
——————————
I liked the wrestling idea so much I decided to flesh it out a bit more. Maybe I’ll do more of this if the mood strikes.

Like, Wow! The Results (Study)
Followup post to "The History of Zoinks." Includes methods, results, discussion. Page break after the first section.
Methods
This exploratory study will examine how accurately the catchphrases in Scooby-Doo reflect the language of the time. Based on their historical usage, we hypothesize that “jinkies” will be the most commonly occurring phrase, followed by “jeepers,” then “zoinks.”
We sampled the first 25 episodes of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! These episodes aired from September 13, 1969, to October 31, 1970 and make up the first two seasons of the show. The third and final season would not air until 1978 and had different writers, so it was omitted. Qualitative analysis was conducted in NVivo from episode transcripts obtained online.
Results
The most used catchphrase was “zoinks,” at 87 occurrences across 25 episodes, averaging 3.48 “zoinks” per episode. Some episodes had no “zoinks”, with a notable 3-episode consecutive gap mid-season 1. Overall, “zoinks” usage trended positive; season 1 averaged 3.12 “zoinks” per episode while season 2 averaged 4.25. “Jeepers” was used once and there were no “jinkies”.
In context, Shaggy used “zoinks” as either an expression of shock on its own or paired with a frightful observation (e.g., “Zoinks! It’s the snow ghost!”). Once, in a witch’s hut, it was used as an adjective: “What zoinky labels… ear of a newt?” The first “jeepers” came from Velma, used more as surprise than fear: “Jeepers! Someone’s going into that old mansion” (season 1, episode 6, “What the Hex Going On?”).
Tumblr media
Figure 1. Zoinks Frequency in "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?"
Discussion
Results not only contradicted the hypothesis, but all expectations founded by the literature. Despite their cultural relevance, we observed only one count of “jeepers” (not counting the season 2 episode 4 title, “Jeepers, It’s the Creeper”) and no “jinkies." The slow climb of “jeepers” may be attributed to the aforementioned “cultural time capsule” concept. It is an unwritten law of media that it must wait to capture popular culture until a few years too late. Usage of “jeepers” skyrocketed between DeBeck’s comic in 1928 and Donahue’s musical rendition in 1939, peaking in 1946 (Harper, “Etymology of jeepers”). However, despite Scooby-Doo’s monumental ratings, “jeepers” did not jump again until the movie Jeepers Creepers came out in 2001. Although “jinkies” did not appear in these two seasons, we know it would experience a great jump in The New Scooby-Doo Movies whenever Velma loses her glasses, growing to become her exclusive catchphrase in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo when she cooks up a clue. In the sampled episodes, Velma seemed to be struggling to find a catchphrase that stuck, floating between “gosh,” “golly,” and similar expressions. Why it took until three years into Scooby’s run for “jinkies” to first appear is uncertain, as both it and “zoinks” share similar histories as interjections of fright (and flight).  One potential explanation could be the face value of the characters on first airing. Shaggy boasted the voice of radio celebrity Casey Kasem. The writers seemed to enjoy letting him show off his odd audio skills, as in Shaggy’s “ventriloquism act” in the episode “What a Night for a Knight” and every variation of the “disguise as barbers to fool the monster into getting a haircut” scene that warranted a funny voice. Kasem was the first to say “zoinks” (and “zoink,” in one instance), but certainly not the last. In these first two seasons, Shaggy had a clear monopoly on catchphrases; the first “jeepers” even came from him.  The catchphrases in Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? do not reflect the vernacular of the time. Rather, they reflect what pumps the lifeblood of Hanna-Barbera cartoons: money (i.e., ratings). To keep the audience hooked, the writers had to put out only the best voicework. Casey Kasem as Shaggy was a bridge between audiences of children enjoying funny voices and adults enjoying a familiar radio personality (and modern folks enjoying a 60’s caricature). He and Scooby embody the spirit of the franchise strongly enough that they have survived through every series that tried to cut out other members of the gang (Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo, The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo) or otherwise split them up (Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue!). Despite “zoinks” having no direct predecessors in popular culture, Shaggy quickly spread it with his image as irreplaceable icons of the series across 250 episodes and 45 films. Like with Barney Google’s “heebie-jeebies” and Fred Flintstone’s “Yabba-dabba-doo,” it’s not about the linguistic sense of the catchphrase. It’s about the character who delivers it.
*Excluding Velma (2023) on HBO Max, which featured all of the gang but Scooby-Doo. Shaggy endures.
