Favorite Suppressor Hosts
Tumblr media
These days I tend to attempt to suppress any and everything. Suppressors are one of the best accessories, especially for my hearing. I’ve gotten so used to shooting suppressed, that when I shoot something unsuppressed, it feels kinda weird. I also feel like I’m being rude when I have other shooters around me. It’s quite unfortunate that suppressor ownership isn’t as easy as purchasing a firearm like it is in other countries. Many countries outside of the US, it’s considered impolite to hunt or shoot without a sound suppressor. A suppressor truly amplifies the shooter experience as well as helps protect the shooters hearing.
Tumblr media
Now many firearms and calibers are better suppressor hosts than others. Revolvers are nearly impossible to suppress without some sort of device to cover the cylinder. There are some of these devices available, but they make reloading quite the challenge. Older style rifles such as lever actions can be suppressed, provided that the barrel is properly threaded. One of my most recent suppressor host projects has been my Henry .44 magnum that I picked up a few months back from Brownells. I’m just starting to scratch the surface on that caliber, but I’m really liking what I’m seeing.
Tumblr media
In the past I’ve had a number of different rifles that didn’t seem to take to a suppressor all that well. One of those was the .300WSM. I used to own a Tikka bolt rifle with a thin barrel that had horrendous accuracy problems once a suppressor was thrown into the mix. I’ve since sold off that rifle and have been enjoying suppressing the 6.5 Creedmoor in bother an AR version as well as in a Bergara bolt action rifle. The bolt action rifle is the Bergara B-14 HMR and it’s been a wonderful rifle. Although it’s had a couple different optics, currently it’s topped with the Brownells MPO 3-18x50. Less enjoyable to suppress has to be the 5.56 in which I have a bunch. A suppressor does tone it down, but it’s still loud especially with a short barrel.
Tumblr media
Most likely my favorite 2 calibers to suppress, and for good reason is the .300 Blackout and the .45acp. The .45acp is naturally slow, subsonic so it’s pleasant to shoot. The .300Blackout cartridge was intended to be suppressed from its inception. I run an 8” AR in .300 blackout for deer hunting on occasion, but also have a Brownells BRN-180 in .300. blackout that’s an amazing piece! The .300 Blackout is a reloader’s dream with a ton of different load variations to choose from. I use the Hornady. 190gr SubX for hunting and for plinking I hand load some 200gr behind Hodgdon CFEBlack powder.
Tumblr media
As much of a hassle it is to obtain a suppressor, I have always found the aggravation worth it for the reasons mentioned above. It truly does enhance the shooting experience on a myriad of different levels. There are also so many suppressors to choose from these days and most all major vendors, such as a Brownells have a huge selection of suppressors to choose from. Recently Brownells had a sweet deal on the Aero Precision Lahar can when purchasing an Aero Solus rifle.

I keep hearing people say that .300 Blackout is similar to 7.62 Soviet and .30-30. Then I look at figures and it looks like .300 Blackout has a much lower velocity then all of those (unless maybe it is loaded especially hot). What gives?
So, this is the weird shit about how bullets work, caliber is only an indication of it's diameter, not it's mass, ballistics, or kinetic energy.
To spare treading ground I only BARELY understand, .300Blackout aka .300AAC (IIRC the same SAAMI specs), is generally a much lower velocity, higher mass round than 7.62x39 or .30-30. This means it has... interesting external ballistics, as a big chonky boy meant to be going below Mach at sea-level out of a carbine barrel.
It would be interesting to see people experiment with less aerodynamic bullet shapes (hollow point, expanding cross, as examples) with .300Blackout, to see if there's some deeper viability for terminal ballistics inside of urban engagement ranges.
But I digress, basically, all bullets are weird AF, and have weird quirks and properties that make a total data dork like me have a combination panic attack and nerdgasm.

Piston or Direct Impingement? My Thoughts…
This debate of direct impingement gas system versus piston system for your AR style firearm has been raging on for decades now. It’s very akin to the Ford vs. Chevy debate, 9MM vs. 45 ACP debate or even the Revolver vs. Semi auto debate. Other than AK style firearms, up until recently I had not yet dipped my toes into the piston driven AR firearm world. Having had enough time with a couple of piston driven AR style firearms, I figured I’d give my overall thoughts on the piston vs direct gas impingement debate. Who will win? Which one is the best?
Tumblr media
Direct gas impingement AR firearms have been around since the original Stoner design. Over many decades, there have been some slight changes, but the original concept is still in play today. Those that argue that the direct gas impingement system is superior will say that it has less moving parts to wear out. With direct gas impingement, after the bullet has travelled past the gas port in the barrel, the gas is pushed up into a gas block and directed back towards the upper receiver by way of a gas tube. This gas pushes against the gas key on the bolt carrier. As the carrier moves rearward, the bolt lugs rotate and free from the chamber, and extract the spent shell casing. The rearward travel is slowed down by the buffer and buffer spring, then pushes the bolt carrier assembly forward, stripping a fresh round out of the magazine and chambering that round. One argument against direct impingement systems is that all of that gas is poured back into the receiver and over time can have an affect on the firearm in a negative way. With regular cleaning, this is less of an issue, but when running suppressed, this build up of carbon from these gases can be accelerated.
Tumblr media
Piston driven AR style firearms are also not a new thing whatsoever. Instead of a gas tube, they will have a piston that’s driven by gas from the barrel that will travel rearward, pushing the bolt carrier rearward, ejecting the spent shell casing and stripping/chambering a fresh round. Typically the piston will have it’s own spring to push the piston back forward and the bolt carrier will either have a buffer spring or some other systems will have a shorter carrier with smaller springs such as the ones found on the Brownells BRN-180 piston driven system. The arguments against a piston driven system typically are that the front end can seem heavier, there’s more parts to wear out and they can be more complex to disassemble. The argument for a piston driven system always seems to be that they are more reliable and smoother felt operation than their direct gas impingement counterparts.
Tumblr media
So my thoughts are this…both are great and proven systems. The piston driven AR styler rifles I own are Brownells BRN-180 in both .223 and .300Blackout. These are extremely smooth shooters and there is definitely less carbon buildup inside of the receivers. For me, the disadvantage is that replacement parts aren’t nearly as common to find than a run of the mill DI AR firearm will be. Either system is a proven firearm system when properly maintained and quality parts are utilized. I also don’t notice the BRN-180 systems being any more front heavy or unbalanced when compared to my DI firearms. So in my opinion, there is no clear winner…I like them both! Which system do you prefer?
