30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 15. A song that deserved an MV
I mentioned Queendom when I posted about 'LION'. One of the themes was called Fandora's Box, where groups performed songs their fans requested. 'Put it Straight' is a (G)I-DLE b-side (meaning any song part of an album that's not the promoted title track) that's loved by many, and so it's not at all surprising that Neverlands (that's the name of the fans) requested this song in particular. Soyeon decided to put a horror twist on it, putting emphasis the repressed rage within the sadness 'Put it straight' originally expresses. (G)I-DLE never ceases to amaze me with their ingenuity and talents, which now obviously includes acting as well. There's a version of the video where they show other contestant's reactions to the stage, and they were blown away - understandably so.

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 21. Your favourite disband song
2NE1 is a f*cking tragedy, man. Hi, hello, my name is Kainé and I hate YG Entertainment with a burning passion! Wanna know why? Here's a short selection of their crimes:
• Imposing inconsistent and strict rules on their idols
• Promoting 2NE1 as 'ugly'
• Handling scandals by... Not handling them at all. They just try to sweep everything under the rug and then expect people to just forget about it. This includes Bom Park's "drug scandal", where they didn't even bother issuing a statement about the situation.
• Throwing away projects with the speed of unmedicated ADHD — remember BLACKPINK? Yeah so they haven't had a comeback since last April. Remember when CL was gonna debut in the US? Yeah, so she ended up shoved in the "YG dungeon", and then she left the company. Remember Lee Hi? Yeah, so she got herself a comeback after THREE YEARS of radio silence, and even that was just an EP. What a surprise, she left the company the same year.
2NE1 basically just faded away after the Park Bom scandal, I'm grateful we even got a goodbye song. We can only hope that they'll reunite in the future. I miss 2NE1.

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 13. A song that makes you dance
Before the whole quarantine madness started, I attended a @danceon workshop where they taught us the choreography of this song. I honestly don't know how I pushed through it all, I ate something bad the day before and had indigestion the whole time, with terrible stomach cramps and all. Despite feeling awful and disoriented, I was pushed to be in the first row during recording, and I messed up multiple times pretty badly. God, I hope I never ever have to see that video. I might just upload a cover here though, I just need to gather the courage, I'm rather shy when it comes to dancing. Anyways, stan MAMAMOO, go listen to this gem and don't resist the urge to dance!

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 9. A song from a movie
You guys should've seen my face light up when I heard this song in season 1 episode 5 of Lucifer. It's a rare occurrence to just stumble upon k-pop outside of it's community, so my reaction was understandable. I choose this track not only because it was the first one I thought of upon reading the prompt, but also because I wanted to show you the insane stage presence CL has. The ex-leader of the legendary 2nd generation girl group 2NE1 owns the stage with her explosive energy and mad skills, I envy all of those who had the pleasure of seeing her live. Unfortunately, she was signed at YG Entertainment, a company one of the so-called 'Big Three' universally hated by all k-pop fans. YG is notorious for their mistreatment of their artists, throwing them into the infamous 'YG dungeon' where they don't have the opportunity to have a comeback for extended periods of time, letting them fade into oblivion. CL left the company at the end of 2019 after her contract expired, releasing an album immediately after. I hope she has a comeback soon and recovers from all that time being shoved in the back of a closet.

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 26. A song with a difficult choreography
Now, this might surprise some of you, and I don't blame you. The choreography certainly looks easy to the layman's eyes, but those of us who have dance experience look in aw of the amount of muscle control this dance requires. Most people would be able to learn it, but only few would be able to pull it off like Taemin does. I would definitely look like a log if I ever attempted to do this dance. Also: Taemin. Just... Taemin.

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 8. A song by a rapper
Unpretty Rapstar was a survival show for female rappers that ran for 3 seasons. Contestants completed tasks so they could have a chance at working with famous producers and being part of the UPR Vol. 3 album tracks - tasks included rap battles, freestyle challenges and the one-take music video challenge you see here. I kinda have a thing for korean rapper girls, so this show was my jam; and 'She's coming' is one of my favourite tracks that came out of this show. What you see is a compilation of my favourite parts (in the original Instagram post) from my favourite contestants, first one being Jeon Soyeon, best female rapper of her generation in my opinion and leader of girl group (G)I-DLE.

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 29. A song you can't stop listening to
I don't even know why! PENTAGON is a group that I'm just interested in mostly. But this song was on repeat ever since it came out. Maybe it's the edgy teen in me? Who knows...

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 10. The last song you listened to
You guys already know how much I love AleXa, and 'Kitty Run' is another great addition to her slowly growing discography. More vocal heavy than Bomb and Do or Die, it shows another side of AleXa, along of course with her spectacular dancing skills.

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 6. A song about female empowerment
I’ve been following (G)I-DLE’s work ever since their debut. Back then, I was happy to see Jeon Soyeon (who I’ve been following ever since she appeared in Unpretty Rapstar Vol.3) debut, and it was such an incredible experience seeing her thrive as the leader and main rapper of the group. Turns out she’s also an amazing producer and songwriter, having written almost every single track for (G)I-DLE. ‘LION’ is one of those tracks. This comeback was a part of the show 'Queendom’, where girl group competed with each other through completing different projects given to them. Making a comeback and performing it on the show was the last of those projects, and while the group didn’t win in the end, 'LION’ is definitely one of the most memorable songs from the show. The concept was inspired by the live action 'Lion King’ movie and the song depicts the coronation of a young lion, or in their case, lioness.

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 4. A song that everyone should listen to
Told you I’m gonna post about them a lot. I’m trying my best to not repeat artists during the challenge, but with LOOΠΔ in the mix it’s borderline impossible. ‘Butterfly’ is magic. A song about empowerment, it makes me feel like I’m as light as a feather, soaring through the sky like a butterfly. It made me tear up multiple times it’s so beautiful. There’s a running joke that LOOΠΔ has their own genre, and I couldn’t agree more. There’s nothing else that makes me feel the way their music does. It’s kind of like I’m transported straight into the 'Loonaverse’.

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 2. A song that makes you happy
Prepare for a lot of LOOΠΔ posts in the future, because I'm obsessed with them. There's a lot that makes them special, like their debut process. Before the official debut, Block Berry Creative introduced all twelve members through solo pre-debut projects, which took 2 years in total. HeeJin was the first to debut with ViViD. This song immediately captured me. HeeJin's vocals, the colorful music video and the unique sound all make the perfect creation of "The Loonaverse". It's also refreshing to hear more of a jazzy sound in k-pop, considering it's pretty rare.

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 1. The first song you heard
I honestly don't remember which k-pop song was the first - but I can definitely remember this one capturing my attention for the first time. We got stuck in a k-pop MV screening at my first anime convention, and this was among the videos. At the time, I couldn't really appreciate the music itself, (my sensory issues made electronic sounds pretty painful for me back then) but the MV was so beautiful, I couldn't look away. It impressed me so well, I actually returned to the screening the following year. They say k-pop is an acquired taste; it certainly was for me. It was around the 2nd generation when I heard the first songs, and most of those are still unappealing to me.

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 30. A song you've deleted from your playlist
Damn, caught cheating again! I did NOT delete this song, and even the suggestion that I'd do such a thing offends me!  No, you guys don't get it, I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH! This is the song that inspired me to learn Korean, because I wanted to learn to sing it so much! "But then why did you delete it from your playlist?" you may ask. I DIDN'T! F*cking Spotify did!  For some godforsaken reason, two of my favourite k-pop songs got location restricted on Spotify and now I can't listen to them and I wanna sue.  Anyways, go check 'Reasons' out on YouTube, you'll get why I'm so angry.

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 28. A song about something sad
Yes, it is SAAY again, this time with a completely different vibe than 'ZGZG'. For me it was fairly apparent from the start that this song was about seasonal depression. I usually have a hard time understanding underlying messages, but this was different. I have (part of a diagnoses list as long as a goddamn CVS receipt) seasonal depression, and the MV and song evoked the same exact feelings those cold months usually do. Still, I play it on repeat because of a certain inexplicable calmness it brings every time I hear it.  It's like a friend that shows the beauty in sadness and gives me strength to just hold on until it passes — because it always passes.

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 27. A song with an easy choreography
I once again choose a song that has a personal story to it. In march of last year, I decided I want to audition for a k-pop cover group, and so I took to YouTube to find a song that's not as well-known with a challenging choreography. My small country doesn't have as big of a k-pop community, so here my depth of k-pop obsession and my desire to know as much artists as possible makes me quite unique (I don't think it does in general but I've never actually talked to anyone here who has the same kind of curiosity towards the industry as a whole, so this statement is strictly meant in the statistical sense), and I think that gave me an advantage in that situation. I wanted to avoid bringing the same song as anyone else. Yubin's 'Thank You Sooo Much' was a fresh release at the time, and I was obsessed with it. It had so much sass and such a nice retro sound, it instantly captivated me, and so it wasn't hard for me to choose when I decided to attend the audition. This was the song that motivated me to learn waacking, which is one of my favourites styles still, and I was and still am really proud of myself for being able to learn the choreography just from the dance practice video and a couple waacking tutorials. My first audition wasn't a success, the group decided to not accept anyone, but about a month later I got accepted into the group I learned 'DALLA DALLA' with.

30 Day K-pop Song Challenge 25. A song with a color in the title
This song is so beautiful it makes me cry. I started learning it (I like singing) and for the few first times I couldn't even get past the fifth line without choking on my tears. I can't really explain why, but there's something so overwhelming about this song I usually avoid listening to it unless I'm in a very specific mood.
