Hiromu and You try out some tarot cards, hoping to work up some magic and see what the cards say. Some funny lighthearted moments mixed with spooky vibes.

You loved tarot cards, especially collecting them. You loved their artwork and how each tarot card pack was different with different art and sometimes new cards for "yes" and "no". Hiromu shared in your love of these tarot cards and would happily help you look for new tarot cards to find.

You had wanted try your hand at tarot card reading and one October day, you and Hiromu decided to try it out. Hiromu enthusiastically helped you set up a table and picked a tarot card pack to use.

"Let's try this one" Hiromu Suggested, picking the cool Del Toro Tarot card pack and with that, you began shuffling.

You tried the 3 card method and you asked Hiromu to pick 3 cards from the deck after laying them all out.

The cards he choose you then lifted up to reveal them. You tried your best to interpet their meaning.

Flipping through the guidebook, you tried to make out the meaning behind what each card meant and hopefully give Hiromu an good interpretation of the cards.

"From how I see it, you will face some hardship but ultimately will conquer it before achieving your goal" You Explained though you were a little unsure if that's what it meant or not. Despite your doubt, Hiromu was looking at you with awe and fascination.

"Oooh! Like winning another championship? Maybe winning the super juniors?" Asked Hiromu excitedly. You chuckled at his excitement.

"Possibly yes" You Answered with a smile, seeing how Hiromu was bubbling with excitement.

"Oh! May I try?" Asked Hiromu excitedly. You smiled and handed the deck over to him. You watched as he shuffled and then lay out all the cards.

"You may pick three cards" Hiromu Announced, trying to sound mystical and mysterious. You giggled a little and moved your hand over the deck for a while before picking 3 cards.

Hiromu smiled and revealed the cards you picked. Hiromu flipped through the guidebook, hoping to also interpret the cards and what they could mean for you.

"From what I gathered, you are working towards your goal and will achieve and gain what you desire" Explained Hiromu. You smiled and felt a buzz of excitement at hearing that.

"You mean those tickets to my favourite band I've been saving and working up to get? I know I'm almost to my goal for the money to buy the tickets for us" You Replied.

"That could be it!" Smiled Hiromu and you both shared a chuckle together as the leaves fell outside your cosy little Tokyo home.

But what happened next was even more spooky and almost magical!

Hiromu did indeed, win a championship belt after a hard match. And at your work, you recently got promoted and earned a big fat raise that allowed you to buy the tickets to your favourite band's concert.

You and Hiromu decided to every now and then to try out some tarot card readings. 9 out of 10, the cards revealed themselves and the things the cards spoke of had come true strangely.

Maybe with more practice and more readings, you guys hoped that you'd both become tarot card reading experts!

Inktober Day 10: Fortune

Any skepticism that Noah had walking into the fortune-teller’s shop had long since been forgotten. Nestled between a dim-sum restaurant and a 24-hour pharmacy, the  shop made itself known on King Street by the neon sign of a crystal ball in the window. Noah had been on the phone with Ben when the flashing purple light caught his eye, and he’d wandered into the shop despite Ben’s many protests.

“Come on Ben, we both know it’s fake, but maybe she’ll be able to read my body language and tell me what to do with my life.” Noah could hear Ben sighing.

“Fine, whatever, but DO NOT give some crazy lady more than 50 bucks to tell you that you’ve hit rock bottom. I’m telling you that for free.”

“Fine.” Noah said, but he didn’t hang up the phone. Instead he cradled it against his ear as he asked the middle-aged woman behind the counter what sort of fortune he could get for under $20. The woman looked him up and down.

“I can give you a one card tarot reading for $25 cash,” she bargained.

Noah nodded and handed over the money as Ben told him that he had already paid too much.

“Come,” the woman said. “Sit at the table and I will tell you what you need to know.”

The table in question was squat and round and pushed into the back corner of the shop. It was covered with a quilted red tablecloth and scattered with slowly melting candles. Noah briefly wondered if the candles were fake, or if the shopkeep just let them burn out every day and brought out new ones the next morning. At the centre of the table was a crystal ball that the fortune-teller carelessly elbowed away as she shuffled the tarot cards on the table. Noah sat opposite to her, and put Ben on speaker.

“Now, I can show you your past, your present, or your future, but I know that it’s the answer to your future that you seek.” The fortune-teller said. Noah threatened to mute Ben when he began to grumble.

“Yes, please.”

She fanned the cards on the table in front of Noah.

“Hover your hands over the cards. Feel their individual energy, and pick just one. It will tell you what you need to know.”

Noah did as he was told, hovering his hand over cards for several minutes before landing on one.

“This one,” he said.

The fortune-teller flipped over the card and hummed. “The tower, upright. Well, isn’t that interesting.”

“What does it mean?”

“It means that you are about to face a time of great upheaval. You must quickly prepare yourself for a sudden change. An awakening is coming.”

Noah flushed as Ben snorted. He ordered himself to breathe, and to feign confusion. Deep down, he knew what this awakening was. One could say that he had, in fact, already been awoken. Not that he would ever tell anyone that. Especially not Ben. Not after his friend-slash-roommate had caught him staring at him while watching the latest episode of the newest Star Wars show last night. Noah looked down at that card, wishing it were anything else. He didn’t know how long he was lost in thought before Ben’s voice broke through the noise.

“Noah? Noah? Are you still there?” Ben asked, sounding worried.

“I’ll call you back,” Noah said, and he hung up in a daze.

Day seven, one week! Ha ha!

Let’s talk about something silly, so I have been working a lot on trying to figure out how magic circle and magic runes work.

Well I know how they work. They work with the theory of expression and . As generally they function like a language and as a there are many languages there are many “ languages” of codes that make up the ways to create magic circles.

Now the silly thing I actually want to talk about is something called card magic.

Card magic came around a bit before the current era. Though developed alongside spell tags

The major difference between spell tags and card magic is that spell tags are only able to be used once, while spell cards can return to their decks again and again.

Now there are several different kinds of magic cards that have been created over the years.

There are:

• card figures - originally from the valley of wundawl, used and created by the seventh queen of hearts, they are like a hybrid of summoning cards and prophetic cards, they create "origami" figurines to obey the holder, they can also be given a phantom form if pumped full of magic. (in the modern era they are used in yu-gi-yo style duels)

• circus cards- create as a magic aid of sorts by a card mage named Larkspur. they have a variety of uses and effects, from drawing on powers of the people they depict to simply storing magic shields and bullets. mostly bullets.

• summoning cards- they summon lesser spirits bound to them. they can also just draw the magic off the spirit without summoning it.

• circle cards- cards that where develop around the witch war as an attempt to make a reusable spell tag. did not work out exactly as desired but a close enough mach. they have a limited number of charges in a day and require more magic to use than spell tags. also sort of binds the cards to your being... no biggie

• prophetic cards- the oldest kind of magic cards. having been around since before the eutrothian empire fell. they have three uses: 1. to divine likely outcomes to a senario, 2. to channel spirits (relatively safely) 3.to draw on unique power of the card as agreed upon by an ancient mostly forgotten contract with a god. they are essentially carrot cards.

Card magic, has an added benefit of not requiring a lot of magic to use, being reusable (unlike spell tags) they can also be used in random with other magics or cards. older decks have a tendency to develop a "personality" of their own. especially if owned by several people.

Elle Argent as Jesus Christ: Heartstopper art analysis.

Yesterday, I made this post where I wordlessly compared Elle's art piece for the Lambert School to the painting that draws her attention at the Louvre, Caravaggio's Supper at Emmaus, a depiction of Jesus breaking bread for his disciples after his crucifixion and subsequent rising.

The first thing I noticed that helped me draw the connection between these two paintings was their composition, the basic triangular lines that guide the eye in each painting; from Jesus and Elle in the center to the innkeeper and Tao at the top.

Heartstopper also clearly wanted us to make some connection between Elle and this Caravaggio: they focus on her face before they show us the painting, so we wonder what exactly it is she's seeing, which increases its narrative importance. I assumed she recognized herself in a painting; she did, but not in the way I expected.

The National Gallery (see above source) has this to say about the Caravaggio:

On the third day after the Crucifixion two of Jesus’s disciples were walking to Emmaus when they met the resurrected Christ. They failed to recognise him, but that evening at supper he ‘... took bread, and blessed it, and brake and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight’ (Luke 24: 30–31). Painted at the height of Caravaggio’s fame, this is among his most impressive domestic religious pictures. He brilliantly captures the dramatic climax of the story, the moment when the disciples suddenly see what has been in front of them all along. Their actions convey their astonishment: one is about to leap out of his chair while the other throws out his arms in a gesture of disbelief. The stark lighting underlines the dramatic intensity of the scene. Typically for Caravaggio, he has shown the disciples as ordinary working men, with bearded, lined faces and ragged clothes, in contrast to the youthful beardless Christ, who seems to have come from a different world.

Jesus, in the story, opens the eyes of his disciples in more ways than one (I pulled my Bible out for this!). First, in the scene depicted in the painting, the disciples do not know that this man is Jesus until he blesses the bread and breaks it for them, revealing himself as Christ. Second is the context in which Jesus comes to share dinner with his disciples: they meet him on the road during the day before, and he interprets the Old Testament for them: (stay with me I promise we'll leave the Biblical stuff and get back to the gay stuff soon)

Luke 24:13-16 Now on that same day two of [the disciples] were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. Luke 24:25-27 Then he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?" Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.

If Safe Space is an exact analogue to Supper at Emmaus, then Elle takes the position of Jesus, and she draws from the story of Christ's crucifixion and rising a trans metaphor.

Death does not always mean death. For example, in the world of tarot, the card of Death does not signify literal Death, but a transformation: that the idea of death is a catalyst for change. If you're trans or non-binary, you understand the idea of the person you were being dead; that's why they call it a deadname. For me, the girl I was is dead. The person I am now, a living, breathing, non-binary person, is alive.

Jesus died and lived again; the boy Elle was died and the girl Elle is lived. Elle takes the spot of Jesus. Elle is risen.

There's another half to this metaphor: of the disciples that don't recognize Jesus. See where I'm going with this? At first, after Jesus had undergone his transformation, the disciples do not recognize him; literally "Their eyes were kept from recognizing him." The fault is not on them – it is another stronger force that maintains their blindness. But Jesus stays with them, despite the fact that they don't know who he is, and he talks to them about the scriptures.

We don't know much about Elle, pre-transition. But we know that Elle, Tao, and Charlie, at least, were friends before Elle's transition, and she had to come out to them at some point. So, in essence, she is Jesus on the road to Emmaus; unrecognized, a stranger, until she reveals herself for who she is.

She takes the moment Jesus tells his disciples who he is and shows what happens when Elle stays. We don't all have the luxury of being the Son of God, who can just pop away at a moment's notice after coming back from the dead (which is what he does, in the story: once the disciples have their eyes opened, he leaves). But this is Elle, out, resurrected, staying.

"So. There've been a lot of changes in my life over the last couple years. But with this piece I guess I wanted to capture a place that holds a lot of happy memories. Even in the darker times. Somewhere I always felt safe."

Safe Space comes after the moment of realization, after Elle comes out, after her friends' eyes are opened. But implied in its source and its inspiration is the moment of truth, the moment of coming out. There's been a lot of that, this season, coming out. There's people that want to and are scared, and people that refuse to and walk away. We never had to go on that journey with Elle. But she's telling us about it, now. She's telling us that it was glorious, that it was godly, that it was religious, that she died and was resurrected.

Before I leave, I want to touch on Tao's importance in this piece. The disciples in Supper are the two men that are seated; the man standing is the innkeeper, who is not quite a part of Jesus' world. Interesting, that Charlie and Isaac, the two people of Elle's group who are part of the queer community, take the place of the two disciples, and Tao, the token straight friend, is standing in the place of the innkeeper; not a follower of Jesus but a witness to the miracle of his resurrection anyway. They are all different people in this painting; different identities, different lives, different loves. But they were all there to witness Elle revealing herself in her resurrection. Tao, afraid of being left alone, is brought into this inner sanctum of Elle's world. Into her safe space.

So you're looking for a system other than D&D...

Have you tried solo RPGs? Because it's not just "how can I play D&D alone" there's a whole world of cool stuff out there….And I want to tell you about it.

(I'm quite sick today so please forgive any incoherence or typos.)

First off, it's totally fine if you're more of a party person over a solo person. I just know a lot of people aren't aware of solo games, how they work, or the breadth of diversity you find among them.

If you ask about solo games, the first one mentioned is almost always Ironsworn. It's freeeee and comes with a lot of resources. The PDF is over 200 pages, so I understand if you don't want to dive in with Ironsworn quite yet.

Ironsworn has a large community, including support for Foundry and Roll20, along with many derivative works. It offers a gritty default fantasy setting, but encourages you to ignore that if you prefer another world… maybe one from another RPG you enjoy the lore from…?

BUT maybe you want something that isn't as much of a commitment (and maybe a little sad)?

Many Wretched and Alone games use a tumbling block tower to simulate a random ticking clock. It might represent your failing mental health, the barricade crumbling, the ship sinking…

One of the creators of the system has a great thread highlighting their favorite games. Just search Wretched an Alone on Itch.io to find even more.

And if you don't want to go buy a Jenga tower, there are some great random simulators out there. I've been able to play W&A games on road trips, using a deck simulator, a dice simulator, and a tumbling tower simulator. Here's tower replacement I like. It replicates the odds of a tumbling tower falling without being too complicated.

Carta is another cool system where you use a standard deck of playing cards to create a map that you explore. As you explore, you usually have to manage resourses to avoid something bad, but not always.

Here's a collection of several games made using Carta.

Dead Belt takes this concept and RUNS with it. You have a few things to track as you explore abandoned randomized ship decks, searching for a good payload. Upgrade your gear and do it again.

Does the thought of managing your character sound exciting? Do you enjoy soulslike games, like Elden Ring and Bloodborne?

Rune is a fresh release with a lot of third-party support already. It's pretty easy to pick up and play too.

Apothecaria and Apawthecaria have you making potions for the local village. Go out exploring, collect ingredients, and see if you can solve the greater mysteries of the land.

Interested in horror, but want a more narrative-driven experience? In Dwelling, you'll spend the night sleepless and alone in a haunted house. This is a very neat game.

Songs of the City is a delightful tarot game that you play once a day for a week. It's another narrative-driven game where you draw cards and cast magic to see small neat changes in the city you reside in.

Anamnesis, Anamnesis, Anamnesis. I talk about this game a lot because it's magical in its simplicity. There's nothing to track and it's an incredible way to generate character ideas or tell a story.

Today I struggled again with staying focused, but by taking frequent breaks I managed to work on a lecture and a half, so I consider myself happy. I worked way better than I expected in the afternoon, and I even finished half and hour before usual. I have a pretty good plan to stay productive this week so I can take a few days off next week, and hopefully eveything will run smoothly. Health wis my throat is still hurting a bit but not as much, and thankfully my tooth isn't hurting anymore, I am still kinda exhausted from yesterday's dentist adventure tho.

finished working on the lecture I hadn't finished yesterday and working on a whole other lecture too (both of my men theories and power practices class)

updated my reading journal and made a coverpage for next month

continued working on my crochet project (I am half way into making the second sleeve!)

daily dose of podcasts to make my brain shut up

daily Irish practice on duolingo

did a tarot reading for myself since it's been a while (lately I have been doing a lot of readings from my friends but not many for myself, but I am enjoying this new energy I have regarding this little hobby of mine)

today's self care:

made sure to drink enough water during the day

took all the breaks I needed while studying since focusing is still a struggle and I am still tired after yesterday

2024 Wheel of the Year (Sabbats) Pagan Wheel

Feb 2 – IMBOLC (also called Candlemas, Imbolg, and Saint Brigid’s Day) It is midway between the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. This sabbat reminds us that the light is growing stronger and that the harshness of winter will start to fade. To celebrate the growing light, many Pagans will light candles on this holiday.

Mar 19 – OSTARA /Spring Equinox: light and darkness are in perfect balance on this day. Moving forward, daylight will continue to grow as we head into Spring. It is a time to celebrate balance and the arrival of Spring. It represents new beginnings and the freshness of a new day. What’s past is in the past and past and it’s time to move forward.

May 1 – BELTANE (also known as May Day) (pronounced BELL-tain) This is an exciting and energetic holiday that celebrates sexuality, fertility, and all of the life that comes with Spring. It is a time of great joy and celebration! Feel the creative energy of the Universe. It is a time of renewal and rebirth … a time to grow as a person and reinvent yourself if you so desire.

June 20 – LITHA / Summer Solstice The Sun is at its maximum strength … it is the longest day of the year. This is a season of growth, fruitfulness, abundance, and strength. It’s a great night to perform spells for money, abundance, and financial security … and the strength to do what you need to do to be successful.

June 23 – Midsummer’s Eve: the night before Mid-Summer (June 24). It is considered a night of potent magick. Many Witches will be performing rituals and casting spells on this night. It is also a night when fairies roam the land. If you work with the fairy realm, this is an important night for you!

Aug 1 – LAMMAS (also known as Lughnassadh) the first harvest festival. It celebrates the first grains harvested for baking bread. Celebrate by baking or buying a loaf of bread and sharing it as a celebration.

Sept 22 – MABON / Fall Equinox: the light and darkness are in balance on this day. But it marks the change from the light half of the year to the dark half of the year. Moving forward the darkness will grow longer and the daylight will grow shorter. It is a celebration of the second harvest festival and is celebrated by feasting and visiting with family and friends.

Oct 31 – SAMHAIN (pronounced SAH-win) (as known as Halloween) This is the Witches’ New Year! The veil between worlds is thinnest and the dead are thought to return and visit. It is a night to communicate with the spirits, spirit guides, and ancestors. It is also a night to work with Tarot cards and Crystal Balls!

Samhain is also a time when we come to terms with death and are openly encouraged to let go of our fears of it. It is a time when we acknowledge the hard moments of life that we usually don’t think or talk about. If there are things we need to let go of, Samhain is a good time to release them!

Dec 21 – YULE / Winter Solstice: The real reason that this time of year was celebrated .. before christianity existed. We are halfway through the dark part of the year. The darkness is at its peak…moving forward the light begins to grow stronger and days become longer. You can see why the newly formed cult of christianity, which is what it was at the time, choose this time of year for the birth of christ…the light grows strong and brighter…the Sun is reborn. Yule traditions include burning a Yule log, kissing under mistletoe, and placing an evergreen tree in your home to represent the sustaining of life during the winter.
