#31daysofhorrormovies Gonna try and post some of my favourite Horror movies each day of October. Day 23: Pontypool (2008) A completely weird film but utterly compelling. It’s sort of a zombie movie but if the virus was spread through language, specifically terms of endearment. It’s set in a Canadian radio station where initially the strange reports of people going crazy and attacking people come through audibly. It’s a mesmerising watch as it takes familiar zombie tropes and does something fresh with them. It’s creepy and really builds up the tension as it’s just 3 characters in one small location during a blizzard. Then things ramp up and it starts to get weirder with its language based conceit making for something altogether more original. It’s a film I really enjoy for its atmosphere and excellent sound design. I could imagine this working as an amazing audio story or podcast. 31 Days of Halloween #21 Ringu Let's just all stop for a moment and take the time to recognize that there are people out there in the wild who don't know what a VHS is. Like they'd watch this film and be like "what's that?" I am an old person now and my inevitable death is getting closer and closer but hopefully not "7 days" close ya know like the video tape in the film. I swear I'm trying so hard right now, I'm definitely not crying. Not gonna lie, I saw the American remake in highschool and fucking loved it, thought it was one of the scariest films I ever saw in theaters. I then checked out the original and thought it was ok then never watched it again.  Well a bunch of time has passed and thought it was owed a re-watch and I'm very happy I did. I still love the remake but what surprised me was how much of what I liked in the remake was already there in the original. They really didn't need to do much, just Americanize the story a bit and add some extra steps in their investigation and that's pretty much it.  And it's not just story, there are shots lifted directly from this one. And it's not just the remake that borrows from this but this film had a huge cultural impact on the genre. Pretty soon Japan was churning out ghost stories, particularly pale ghosts with long black hair, and America was remaking those films left and right.  It became a huge trend that dominated the horror genre in theaters for a bit there in the early to mid 2000's and while it eventually burned out and most of the remake a were forgettable, we're left with a handful of originals which still hold up as incredibly creepy and scary films. Ringu is a fantastic urban legend/ghost story that's importance cannot be denied.
