Irony can be delicious. Late last century an "orchestral" group was formed to play 19th century music with original instruments. That is horns without valves, traditional strings and everything Beethoven would recognize. They even did detailed research of original copies of scores all with idea of being as accurate and traditional as possible. The Hanover Band.
Then they choose the most advanced tech to record the work in pure digital with Nimbus Recordings. Conflict?
I have a Nimbus CD spinning right now. Beethoven's 7th Symphony by the Hanover Band. It is recorded in an amazing space. A small photo in the jewel case shows the central nave of a gothic cathedral. It sounds big so I am going with that being the where it was recorded.
Nimbus used an Ambisonic microphone which is/are a single pickup that records a full 3D sound field. It uses 4 microphones in a single body that encodes 4 signals that may be reconstituted into various formats including surround sound and even plain old stereo.
The original instruments make it sound as Beethoven would have heard it if he were not deaf. More Irony.
In any case the recording is amazing. The space and sound stage are incredible. Natural reverb is great.
Not yet said is Beethoven's 7th is my absolute favourite music piece. It is the desert Island tune for sure. That island having 120 volt AC and my stereo and a lifetime supply of vacuum tubes.
As a document the Nimbus recordings are great and you can apparently still buy them. They even have the entire Beethoven Symphony set by Hanover Band in a 5 disk set.
I think these are worthy notwithstanding it aint vinyl. Sometimes the best recordings are on CD and you gotta live with it.
I don't mind. If this were available on 180 gram vinyl I would buy it. Not that it is fundamentally better, just that my vinyl playback system is much higher quality than my CD player.
As a follow up to Ludvig Van I am playing my old Cowboy Junkies CD. Also recorded by a single ambisonic microphone in a church with amazing ambience and sound stage. Oh that Bass is crazy good. It's just a foot tapping on a riser. As a side note "the sound" on track one is masked by the ARC Cl60. Clear as day with the Franken Amp. Summer is coming.
It is a shame that the ambisonic method never caught on in the main stream.
