Ready to rec some awesome fics that I read this month!! Feel free to add on with some of your own Bagginshield recs. 😁

March 2024 Rec List

G Rated:

A Home, A Pack, A Place of Love by Lucigoo89 (WIP, 4K, 2ch.)- You can't keep me away from puppy fics! Deciding to run away from home, Corgi Bilbo takes puppy Frodo and escapes into the streets which might not be that friendly to the small animals. The love between Frodo and Bilbo is already so adorable and we haven't even met any company members yet!

To Court a King by Porphyrios (Complete, 19K, 1ch.)- This fic has been recced a lot recently and it's totally worth it! Bilbo and Thorin have decided to court, only some are worried about the worthiness of such a match. I have reread this fic twice just this month alone.

T Rated:

Desperate Magic by BeautifulFiction (Complete, 5K, 1ch.)- This is one of those fics that is worth revisting again and again. On the brink of death, Bilbo sees it in himself to tend to Thorin's hair. It's such a unique kind of Everybody Lives fic, and I just get overwhelmed by the love in this story.

Frozen Heart by snowmissus (soul_of_blaze) (WIP, 7K, 3ch.)- When Danny first promoted this fic on tumblr I was 100% invested. Erebor is trapped in a forever winter and Bilbo is brought to see if he can help. I can't wait to see what all is in store for this fic because the setup is spectacular.

Golden Hearts Bleed Faster by LordOfTheRazzles (WIP, 3K, 1ch.)- I've been waiting for Razzy to release this fic. Bilbo Baggins is the Prince of the Shire and in need of a new bodyguard, Thorin. Bilbo is just so sassy and you can tell this is going to lead to some good antics between the duo.

There and Not Back Again (or, The Saving of Erebor) by femmbingley (WIP, 164K, 49ch.)- There's so much to say about this fic. Post-BOTFA dwarven politics where Bilbo has assumed the duties of the consort which makes things more difficult for Dain. I really love the characterizations and I just can't get enough of this fic!

M Rated:

A heart of stone and Fire in his soul by Lucigoo89 (Complete, 3K, 1ch.)- This fic is chock full of beautiful metaphors. Bilbo's introspection on his thoughts of Thorin during their first standoff with Azog. Honestly, this is one of my favorite Goo fics.

E Rated:

Kurdu 'abadaz by LordOfTheRazzles (WIP, 34K, 6ch.)- This is unlike any Post-BOTFA fic I've ever read. The magic of the Arkenstone brings Thorin back to life for a purpose: help the trapped souls of Erebor. There's such a touching scene between Thorin and his amad that has me in pieces over this fic!

Sleep Alone; Start All Over by vicious_summer (WIP, 56K, 3ch.)- I'm still thoroughly enjoying this fic so far. After an accident, Bilbo is the one who ends up losing about seven years worth of memories including the fact that he’s married to the King Under the Mountain. I’m just always so impressed with vicious_summer’s writing style as it has a more Book!Bilbo vibe.

it's times like this when I wish I was more organised with note keeping or have the memory of something better than a hamster

I haven't been reading (for them and just generally) nearly as much as before I started writing for them. Not bcos I think it disrupts any writing process (can't disrupt no process 😌) but just bcos I don't seem to have as much time

But here's my attempt at a varied-ish list in no particular order:

[M] The Sisyphean Nightmare (16ch) by HonestToBlogJuno Adult Wednesday is contractually obligated to participate in the marketing of her book, to her dismay. Luckily she is married to a werewolf with a communications degree and side-hustle in social media.

[Unrated] you could be the one that i keep (1ch) by overnights - Genie AU And Enid, who’s wished on every star and comet and birthday candle she’s ever seen, looks at Wednesday now and comes up impossibly short of an answer. One wish left, anything in the world at her fingertips, and all she really wants is more time to spend with this enchanted, enchanting mystery of a girl.

[Unrated] backseat (3ch) by reputationstation - Celeb AU Wednesday Addams is a failed fencing prodigy with a once promising career and a troubled past (and if everything goes according to plan, a troubled future as well) who has no intentions of becoming friends with the overly excitable, bubbly girl who calls herself a 'social media influencer', whatever that means. However, like most things in her life, her plans are inevitably thrown off the course.

[Unrated] gifts from a cat (1ch) by Rennajade the one where wednesday is basically just a cat in human form

[T] Dia de los Muertos [now with chapter breaks] (11ch) by WishaDream Wednesday invites Enid over to her house for Dia de los Muertos. It promises to be a horribly fantastic day.

[T] Shot Glasses, Tacky Jewelry (i know you mean more to me than that) (8ch) by RainbowJeff - Holiday/Mall AU Wednesday has somehow been dragged into the mall employees' yearly Secret Santa. What's worse, she's pulled Enid Sinclair as her giftee.

[G] a day like a day in summer (4ch) by poetroe Wednesday has strange ways of showing affection; Enid becomes intimately familiar with them.

[G] yours, eurydice (14ch) by hanjisgirlfriend - Celeb AU Best-selling horror author Wednesday Addams hasn't written in years. Everything changes when Enid Sinclair moves in across the hall.

[M] once bitten (try again?) (1ch) by nd_mindoir Enid learns how to touch Wednesday and why Wednesday is so much softer with her in return

There's also Our Lady of Wild Beasts by Pelgraine which is no longer on AO3 because she's publishing it into an original fiction novel. Sad for us, but extremely good for her. Huge congrats!!

I suppose it wouldn't hurt if I started putting my Dimileth fic stuff here, too.

So-

A while ago, I wrote some Hopes AU enemy to lovers, angst/comfort/fluff Dimileth (with some Shez pov) focused on Dimitri being terrified of being forced into an arranged marriage. He runs off in a panic only to meet the Ashen Demon camping not far from her mercenary company. I'm up to 3ch now, and the 4th is cooking 💙💚

I'm always wary of accidentally annoying the wrong crowd, but my stuff seems to be more FE focused.

Starwatch AU: Cassidy, Pharah and Ana Lore.

Ok the votes are in and a combination of Leia and Qi'ra was the majority vote!! I've already come up with a design so while I try and finish that here's some backstory!!

Note; some info I used for allies and general world lore is from @cybernightart (they are actually why I started think about this AU lol) so check out their Starwatch Genji content please.

Anyway now for story.

Everyone knows of the Royal House of Amari, loved as much as they are feared. Cunning strategists, powerful warriors, several planets under their command, a family of many rumors. Some believed the family had mystical abilities, others believed that the royal family had access to technologies that other kingdoms and empires could only dream of.

All these rumors were overshadowed by the mysterious and sudden assassination of Queen Ana Amari. Her death threw the kingdom into chaos.

Many were worried about the state of the kingdom if the Crown Princess Fareeha Amari were to take the thrown. After all the Princess had stated time and time again about her disinterest in the politics and responsibilities of the thrown. She herself wanting to study for battle.

With the recent destruction of the Shimada empire, in combination with the Queens death, citizens were worried that with Princess Amari on the thrown that they would enter an era of war with the Infinite Empire, an era they wouldn't come out of alive.

Concerns changed when it was announced that Prince Cole Cassidy-Amari would be taking the throne in his sisters stead.

After that announcement reactions were mixed, nobles were appalled that a person with no history of royal blood would be taking the throne, while the less fortunate saw hope that one of their own would be in a position of power. Cassidy was named a savior, a false king and the beginning of an unpredictable future.

Due to the technological advances of the kingdom, the Infinite Empire sought ally ship with the House of Amari. The same could be said for the Watchers.

However, neither party achieved full ally ship, as neither of them could guarantee the complete safety of the Amari's people. As a result the planets that were under The House of Amari's command were made into a neutral ground.

Many saw The House of Amari staying out of the rebellion and the Infinite Empire as a good thing.

However behind closed doors the Amari siblings fought on the issue, Fareeha calling her brother a coward. Stating they need to join the Watchers, not want to associate with the Infinite Empire due to their shared suspicion of them being responsible for Ana's death. Cole, however, saw all the downsides of siding with either faction.

Eventually they came to an agreement and in secret, Cassidy entrusted 3CH-O (Cassidy and Liao were still close in this universe) to the Watchers. In hope that her advancements in robotics and AI would assist the Watchers in their rebellion.

As for the Infinite Empire, Emperor Sigma was not stupid, he was not going to ignore the possible threat that the Amari House presented. He placed several outposts and surveillance around to watch the kingdom.

After all was said and done, The House of Amari remained a neutral force between the Infinite Empire and The Watchers, if any suspicion were to arise about the Houses allegiance, of suspected treachery towards the Emperor, well.... Cassidy was always been known for being persuasive.

However a "sliver tongue" can only save you from so much.

After the capture and information extraction of 3CH-O, The House of Amari's involvement with The Watchers, was exposed. As a result, the capture of Cassidy was ordered. Empire Soldiers were dispatched and thought Fareeha, now Royal General Pharah, wanted to fight. Cassidy ordered her not to, giving her secret orders to contact The Watchers.

When Pharah contacted The Watchers, she was met with someone who's voice was familiar to her, but she couldn't place where she had heard it. She asked for assistance, for someone to help save her brother. The Watchers arrived as soon as they could. On a new mission to save the captured prince.

Here a little facts I left out of the story;

Ana is alive, you can probably guess she's the Watcher that Pharah contacts.

Cassidy was a street rat in the same place were Ashe is from, they both met on the streets but during a heist gone wrong, one that changed both of their lives forever. Cassidy was captured by guards and arrested, Ashe promised to come back for him as he yelled at her to get away. However, shortly after, Cassidy caught the attention of Queen Amari and Fareeha and he ended up being adopted. Ashe and Cassidy haven't reunited..... yet.

Mina Liao was the royal scientist, she died in the same assassination that "killed" Ana. She is still the creator of Echo.

Zarya (who is an undercover agent revealed in the Starwatch comic) and Baptiste (the bounty-hunter) both are allies of The House of Amari.

As I stated at the beginning of the post, Cassidy is a combination of Qi-ra and Leia, as a result of that and the knoledge that both of these characters either are taught by a force user or are force sensitive, Cassidy has access to whatever this universes version of the force is. He mostly uses it to improve his aim and help him sweet talk people. He also uses it to protect people from The Seer's influence.

From the previous point you've probably guessed the rumors are true, as stated before, Cassidy is basically force sensitive and Ana still had her cybernetic eye in this universe, though it was more advanced then it was in canon.

Pharah both acts as the Royal guard and a Royal adviser, there were also more reasons why she didn't take the throne other then just "she didn't want to", by all purposes Cassidy taking the throne was a strategic choice.

Pharah also blames herself for Cassidy's capture as she insisted on getting involved.

I'm definitely going to be posting more about this later on but for now you all are goin to have to wait for me to finish Cassidy's design for this AU.

Gonna Crack a Rib / When I Get Home (13.2k, 3/3ch) - Complete!

There had been a point, even when Gojo was laying flayed open on her table, that Shoko didn’t believe it. Maybe it was a ploy to convince the higher-ups he was dead, and he would resurface a few weeks later. Maybe it was a decoy body, and he had been taken elsewhere—anything but the idea that he was actually dead. He always seemed—and quite literally was—untouchable. But he ended up in her morgue for autopsy anyway. It was something they always joked about together, her getting to dissect him. It was just a joke! She had wanted to scream. She never actually wanted this to come to pass. Maybe he was laughing at her from wherever he was now. He made good on his word, now she has to make good on hers.

Or, Megumi and Gojo are dead. Shoko and Yuji are left to navigate life without them.

Persona 3 Original Soundtrack disc 2 comments scan and transcription.

COMMENT DISC 2

01 - Changing Seasons

校内の2学期の曲。オープニングムービー2にも使われているこの曲。開発初期のデモとして作った曲で、ペルソナ3のサウンドイメージ＝この曲、といった感じの曲です。この曲もボーカル部分はサンプリングCDから切り出して、単音部分のピッチを動かして歌わせてそれにプラスコーラスを重ねています。モノローグの声はフランス語ですかね？

02 - Basement

作戦行動中に流れる曲。後半のソロストリングスは最近買った某サンプリング音源で、バイオリンはなかなか良い音してます。

03 - Master of Tartarus

タルタロス中で出現する中ボスの曲。こちらも『Master of Shadow』と同様に元はフィールドと対になっていた曲です。対になっていたフィールド曲は『Changing Seasons 』です。bpmも調も同じなんですね～。サビの部分は川村ゆみさんにアドリブでスキャットしてもらい、そこにディレイをフィードバックさせて混沌とした雰囲気を出してみました。

04 - これでいいんだ···

荒垣の例のあのシーンの曲、いや、あまり詳しく書いちゃマズいですよね。

05 - Living With Determination

悲しいシーンで流れる曲。悲しい曲は実は25時 (The Voice Someone Calls) で使われているピアノのモチーフを具体化させたメロディとなっています。毎プロジェクトでこういった悲しいシーンは見せ場となるので作曲するのには苦労します。

06 - tartarus_0d04

07 - 京都

京都の修学旅行で流れる曲。一応全曲収録CDのためこんな曲まで収録しましたが···、これって環境音楽の類じゃないんですかね？

08 - Afternoon Break

昼休みに放課後の誘いを受けるときに流れる曲で、『Joy』のアレンジとなっています。コミュイベントで喜びを表現した曲が1つだと何度も同じ曲が続いてしまうことがあるのでバリエーション違いということで、開発終盤に急遽作った記憶があります。後半のギターソロはちょっと60年代の雰囲気のある音色を狙いました。

09 - 時価ネットたなか

ペルソナ3では内輪ウケのネタは避けようという暗黙の (?) コンセプトがあったのですが、シリーズものでサトミタダシ的なものは外せないよなぁということで時価ネットたなかが作られました。「ヒットポイントー」ほどはじけた内容はちょっと作風に合わないのでやや抑え気味のテンションで。実は某無線のBGMっぽい？一応この手の曲ではお約束となった歌手選定、今回は企画の高屋雅英 (ライドウ担当だったのですが···) に歌ってもらいました。

11 - 10年前の記憶

綾時君とアイギスが対峙するシーンで流れる曲。個人的なことで申し訳ないですが、アイギスの足首、あんまりかわいくない···。

12 - Mistic

神秘的な雰囲気など重要なシーンで流れるこの曲は、タルタロスでも使われているメロディを使っています。このメロディはペルソナ3の重要なモチーフで、オープニングテーマが表だとするとこの曲は裏の重要な主題を表現しているものですね。ニュクスのテーマということでしょうか。

13 - 心の力

この曲も『Mistic』にとても近い雰囲気の曲ですね。

14 - 街の記憶

ディレクター橋野からの要望で新年明けたら全体を暗く悲しい雰囲気にして欲しいとのことで、街の曲も大胆にものすごく悲しい曲にしました。実はこの曲は悲しいシーンのバリエーション違いで用意していたメロディで、ちょっと狙いすぎていた部分もあったので使いどころに苦慮していたのですが街の曲へ変更。新年明けていきなり街でこの曲はすごく雰囲気変えますよね。

15 - 学園の記憶

学校の3学期の曲。新年明けてから雰囲気を変える一環としてこういった曲にしています。メロディにエンディング曲のものを使い終わりが近いことを示唆しています。

16 - Living With Determination -巌戸台分寮アレンジ-

寮の3学期の曲。こちらは『Living With Determination』の悲しいシーンのメロディを使ってアレンジしています。3学期はどこに行っても暗い曲ばかりですね。

17 - tartarus_0d06

18 - 暗闇より出でしもの

ボスとの戦いの前で流れる曲。ペルソナ3はわりとボス前イベントがあっさりしていて早く終わってしまうので、曲も初めに作ったものよりもイントロを短くして早めにメロディが始まるように作りました。真女神転生3ノクターンでは印象的な「デデデン！デデデン！」という曲を作ってしまったがために、あれを越えた曲を作らなければという意識がかなりプレッシャーとなりました。長いことシリーズ物の音楽を担当すると似たようなシーンでも前作より良い曲を書かなければというプレッシャーが強く、これが結構辛いところです···。

19 - 全ての人の魂の戦い

やたらと長いラスボス戦、曲も長めで華々しいやつをということでいつものノリでこんな曲を作りました。最後のサビのメロディですが、女神異聞録のころからなぜか3回繰り返すんですよね。いや、私がそう決めたんですが···。

20 - Nyx

ニュクスが降りてくるシーンの曲。劇場版アニメの盛り上がりどころで流れてきそうなこの曲、ちょっといかにもな作り方ですが世界の終わりが近づいている雰囲気が出ていて良いのではないでしょうか。

21 - 決意

ベルベットルームの最上階を出てニュクスへ向かう主人公、ここで『Mistic』のストリングスだけのアレンジになります。このメロディはトップの音だけ聞くと単純なメロディですが、メロディ全体が和音で動いていて、内声もトップと平行進行ではなく色々と絡み合って出来ています。なのでバイオリンのトップの音ではなく、例えばチェロの音を聞くとまた違ったメロディに聞こえてくると思います。

22 - Burn My Dread -Last Battle-

オープニングのアニメシーンで主人公のヘッドホンから漏れ聞こえてきていた曲がこの曲です。最後の戦いは印象的な曲で、ということでこの曲になったのですが実は初期段階ではオープニングのシーンでもっとこの曲をフィーチャーするつもりでしたが絵との兼ね合いで曲は少々抑えた演出となりここにきて最後で大きく流れるようになりました。

23 - 絆

卒業式のシーンで流れる曲。忘れていた記憶がよみがえった瞬間の未来が開けていくようなイメージでオープニングテーマのメロディをアレンジしました。

24 - 私が守るから

スタッフロール前のアニメシーン。エンディング周りのイベントシーンは毎プロジェクトそうなのですが今回も試行錯誤を繰り返しかなり時間をかけて練り上げました。

25 - キミの記憶

この曲はエンディングテーマでもありペルソナ3のイメージソングのようなもののつもりで書きました。弊社の小森の作った詞が素晴らしい。エンディング周りのテストプレイで聴いてるとちょっと泣けてくるのは詞が物語と凄くシンクロしてるからではないかと思います。最後の曲は先代の「君のとなり」の感動を凌ぐものを、という意気込みで作ったのですが、出来は皆さんの評価に任せるとして詞には凄く助けられたと思います。

26 - Blues in Velvet Room

最近オレの人のよさを見透かされてる気がする···。まさか社外の人にまで！サントラの売りになるボーナストラックが欲しいとアニプレックスの足立さんが···。期間的に無理だと答えた後の長い沈黙と煮詰まる会議に耐えきれず、「簡単なアレンジもので一発録りならできますよ」と言ってしまいました。宇田にも手伝ってもらったりして、色々ゴメンね、宇田。曲の方はマスタリング終了間際に作ってたので演奏がへろへろで申し訳ないのですがご容赦ください。ライブっぽい危うさが出てるでしょ？

ちなみにマニアックな事を言うと······、Fenderの'73Stratocaster をMar-shallのJTM60に直刺し、ピックアッブはフロントでアンプはややゲインを持ち上げた程度のセッティングで弾いています。録音はギターアンプにSM58アンビエンス用にステレオマイクを離して配置、計3本のマイクをマイクアンプを経由しPro-ToolsHDへ24bit、96kHzで3ch同時録音、ミックスダウン後に48kHzに落としマスタリングへ持っていっています。
