Decided upon two styles: Basic and Blueprint. Orange parts are paintable, however I might make an additional style that paints the "main part" of the hat. Also, thinking about a styyle that makes the pants dark (akin to his overalls)

finally put together an image edit for this - a bit ago i was given the opportunity to texture a cabinet for the arcade in coquette dragoon :3 the 3d model is all ivy's work, as is the lovely render! ik i've posted a bit of fanart before but it remains to be said, coquette is such a special and powerful work of art + i am always going to be honored that i got to leave a little thumbprint on it.

[ID: First image is a sequence of 3D renders of a work in progress mechanical dragon toy that starts as a solid orange. It gains some grease pencil scribbles on its surface in the form of arrows, lines, and dots showing what portions of the outside will be parallel to the wood grain versus cutting through it versus end grain. Then it's textured with a black and white checker pattern showing the UV unwrap and finally with a streaky putty-colored wood grain, also just slapped onto the UV maps with a few pieces painted a solid putty color where they shouldn't be parallel to the grain.

Second gif shows the dragon rolling across a checkered floor, the motion of its wheels driving the mechanical legs to walk and the wings to flap. The dragon's tail, made of three hinged pieces, swings back and forth lazily behind it. End ID]

We're finally into the wood texturing! Boy is there a ways to go. But I did get the rig completed after stream--including some fixes to what I had already so it doesn't break (other than the automated rolling) when I rotate the root.

I made a too-gnarled wood texture, then a simplified version and a matching semi-cross-grain curve that I hope to help with some projection painting...but I think I need to reference a different wood because the one I've been looking at (my IRL wheeled wooden toy) is too warm and I keep veering away from how orange I'd have to go to match it, which is leaving me unmoored and too high-contrast right now.
