If it had succeeded would Mayorkas have been the first cabinet member ever impeached?

Just to be clear, Secretary Mayorkas was impeached. Impeachment is the first step of the process -- I often suggest that people think of impeachment in the same way that you'd think of an indictment in a criminal proceeding. The House of Representatives is responsible for taking up articles of impeachment and if a simple majority of the House votes to impeach, then that person has been impeached, no matter what happens next.

After that, the next step is taken up by the U.S. Senate where the trial of the impeached official takes place. If there is a trial in the Senate and 2/3rds of the Senate votes to convict the official, then that person is removed from office. But whether they are convicted and acquitted, they still have been impeached.

What happened with Mayorkas is that the House impeached him and when the articles of impeachment were taken up by the Senate, the Senate decided that the charges were a political stunt that did not meet the Constitution's definition of "high crimes and misdemeanors." So, the Senate simply dismissed the charges instead of even proceeding to a trial. But, again, Mayorkas was still impeached; it just didn't go further than that step.

And to actually answer your question, Mayorkas is the second Cabinet member in American history to be impeached. William Belknap, who was Secretary of War under President Grant, was impeached in 1876 for taking kickbacks from traders seeking contracts at military forts on the frontier. When it was clear that he was definitely going to be impeached by the House, Belknap resigned, but despite leaving office he still faced a Senate trial (as President Trump would face with his second impeachment and Senate trial over inciting an insurrection despite his term ending). The Senate tried Belknap on five articles of impeachment and was found guilty on all five by a majority of Senators, but narrowly escaped conviction because the 2/3rds threshold wasn't reached. But despite there being far more Cabinet members than Presidents throughout American history, more Presidents have been impeached than Cabinet Secretaries.

I wonder who would've been able to get a 3rd term as president had the 22nd amendment never been passed. I don't think anyone but Obama might've been able to swing it, presuming a similar order of events to the prime timeline, but I suspect LBJ less Vietnam, Reagan less the senility, and maybe Carter less the Volker Recession or Clinton less the impeachment.

In the GOP primary, Kent successfully ousted Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, a Republican who voted to impeach then-President Donald Trump.

Democrats flipped a Washington House seat that has been dominated by the GOP since 2011, NBC News projected Saturday, as the legacy of Jan. 6 and the subsequent impeachment of then-President Donald Trump cast a powerful shadow over the race.

Republican Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, first elected to represent Washington’s 3rd Congressional District in 2010 and one of the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for his role in the Capitol riot, was ousted in the 2022 GOP primary after the former president targeted her for political retribution by backing political newcomer Joe Kent.

Now Kent, a former Green Beret who criticized Beutler for her impeachment vote and who has shared conspiracy theories about voting, will lose to businesswoman Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, a Democrat.

"If Beutler had been the Republican nominee, she'd have won with 60% of the vote by now," said Chris Vance, the former chairman of the Washington State Republican Party, in an interview before NBC News projected the race.

Just started S2E1 and while the Trespian court is very corrupt and shady… ngl they kinda have a point. NOT in how they’ve been ruling over the common folk, but regarding the queen’s behavior so far.

Like, I definitely sympathize with Ellaire wanting to find out what’s going on in the kingdom, and not trusting the council to be honest. And she actually did good!! She accomplished a lot in very little time!

Her Departure

However, the council is absolutely right in that the way she went about things was extremely irresponsible. She just became the queen and, without any regard for her new duties, left the castle behind. She was gone for several days and the court had no idea where she ran off to, when/if she’d return, and what they were supposed to do in the meantime. There were kings and queens from other kingdoms currently “in her care” and she literally just ditched them. She’s lucky they didn’t feel disrespected, despite it being very improper.

While it’s sad, I’m not that surprised the court interpreted Ellaire’s absence as an abdication. I mean, she literally ran away — yes, with the intention to return, but as the queen she can’t just sneak off whenever she wants to like that. She was no longer a princess with lots of free time, she had become a queen with vital obligations.

Her “Solutions”

Not to mention that her solutions, while nice, did feel a bit… idealistic. When she was “on tour”, she banked a LOT on her privileged position. “When I return to my throne, I’ll be able to fix this, and fix that, and tweak this, and tweak that” etc. Those were some big promises to make, despite her inability to comprehend the political mess she left behind.

And like most people, I agree taxes suck, but Ellaire’s solution to overtaxation being ZERO taxes was pretty silly. When done fairly, taxes do serve a purpose in helping out a territory. Plus I do agree that she should’ve at least waited to get back to court before spreading word about it. She essentially made a promise she had no idea if she’d be able to keep. And a broken promise is worse than no promise at all.

Like, overtaxation is disgusting and definitely needed to be fixed, but the way she went about it was just so hasty. I’m American, and if the President randomly came to my town, shouted in the streets “hey everyone no more taxes ever! :D” and then immediately got impeached, I’d think they were nothing but an idiot (no offense Ellaire, I still love you!)

They Were Right

It really hurts to admit it, but the council was right. Ellaire’s behavior SCREAMS she was not ready to be Queen. I can’t remember the exact line of dialogue, but in S1 a character asked how she thought the court would react when she returned. The fact she believed she’d be the equivalent of “just grounded for a week” was insane. I didn’t know what the exact consequences would be, but “grounded”???? God I love her and think she’s so cool, but one of her biggest flaws is that she’s been spoiled her entire life and it SHOWS.

Further Into Season 2

While I think Ellaire definitely dropped the ball here, I believe this massive failure will be a life lesson. She has to know her actions have consequences and that being an effective ruler requires a lot more than just good intentions. Since the story is already on its 3rd season, I’m sure a lot of people have already seen her develop. I haven’t yet and this post is me just brainstorming.

But I do believe this rock-bottom-outcome will have the effect of also being an important tool. That she will learn from this and develop into the effective, just, and responsible queen Trespia needs.

When people say Hillary should just "shut up and go away," I think back on this photograph. It's from the 3rd Presidential debate where Hillary destroyed Trump. He was humiliated. Remember? It was the debate where Hillary quipped back: "Well, that's because he [Putin] would rather have a *puppet* as President." The look on Trump’s face was priceless. No one had so thoroughly deconstructed and dismantled “The Donald” to his face -- in-front of millions. Maybe that’s why he still holds such a grudge against Hillary? And guess what? Hillary was right (as usual). Putin feared Hillary after witnessing her tenure as Secretary of State. He also realized Trump was a charlatan that stupid Americans would vote for. This led to a massive Russian propaganda effort to sway the election in Trump's favor. Ultimately, Trump won most of the swing states by less than 1% -- 80,000 total votes made Donald Trump the winner of the electoral college. This illegitimate victory has forever undermined our democracy and standing in the world -- exactly what Putin wanted. A weaker America. Twice in the last 20 years a Republican has lost the popular vote but won the electoral college. I simply can’t wait for the day a Democrat wins the electoral college but loses the popular vote. Republicans will freak out and never shut up about it. Point is -- Hillary proved during the debates that she is highly intelligent, articulate, tough, and can out-debate pretty much anyone. Hillary warned us first and she was right about pretty much everything: --The “deplorables.” --Trump's dangerous temperament: "A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons." --Dog-whistling to racists. --Collusion with Russia (Trump has never been able to win a fair fight -- I hope it was worth it, Donnie!) So when I hear people say Hillary should go hide under a rock, I look back at the debates. Why? Because after watching them no one can deny that Hillary Clinton has irreplaceable wisdom and irreplaceable experience. No one can deconstruct and dismantle Trump the way Hillary can. From his dog whistling to racists, dangerous temperament, and treason with a foreign government to steal the Presidency, Hillary calls out Trump like no one else can. I rarely see someone who is able to cut through Trump’s BS so articulately. That's why to this day Trump still attacks Hillary. He can't get over it. He can't get over the fact that she got 3 million more votes than he did (even despite Comey and Russia interfering). Deep down Trump knows he is a puppet that won because of outside forces (primarily the electoral college). On the contrary, Hillary is the rightful choice of the American people. Trump is an illegitimate President. Imagine if Russia and the FBI had favored Hillary and hurt Trump. Imagine if a Republican had won the popular vote but lost the electoral college. Would Fox News ever get over it? At the end of the day no woman has ever been a Presidential nominee for a major U.S. party. No woman has ever won the popular vote by 3 million votes. Except for former Yale graduate, lawyer, First Lady of Arkansas, First Lady of the United States, two-time New York Senator, and Secretary of State Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton. Elections officials are counting primary ballots in Arizona, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Washington on Tuesday in a series of races that will set the stage for some of November's most competitive gubernatorial and Senate contests.

Kansas voters chose to protect abortion rights in their state. The political comeback of a former Missouri Governor was shut down. And the matchup in what will be one of the key gubernatorial races this fall was set.

Here are takeaways from the early results:

KANSAS MAINTAINS CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO ABORTION

Kansas voters sent a dramatic message on Tuesday, opting to maintain the right to an abortion in their state's constitution just weeks after the US Supreme Court decided to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Polls have long shown that voters overwhelmingly support protecting abortions rights. But the win for the "no" vote in Kansas is proof of that and signals that the Supreme Court decision has further angered voters and possibly shifted the politics of the issue ahead of the November elections.

The "no" leaves the state constitution unchanged. While lawmakers in the state can still try to pass restrictive abortion laws, courts in Kansas have recognized a right to abortion under the state constitution.

The biggest warning to Republicans, many of whom have trumpeted the overturning of Roe and backed pushes to pass stricter abortions laws, is perhaps the turnout in Kansas. With 78% of the vote in on Tuesday night, nearly 700,000 people have cast ballots in the primary, a figure that already dwarfs the turnout in the 2020 presidential primary election.

"This is further proof of what poll after poll has told us: Americans support abortion rights," said Christina Reynolds, a top operative for Emily's List, an organization that looks to elect women who support abortion rights. "They believe we should be able to make our own health care decisions, and they will vote accordingly, even in the face of misleading campaigns."

GREITENS' ATTEMPTED COMEBACK FALLS FLAT

Republicans in Missouri breathed a sigh of relief after state Attorney General Eric Schmitt won the wide-open Senate primary, according to a CNN projection.

Perhaps more significant than who won, though, in the deep-red state, is who lost: disgraced former-Gov. Eric Greitens, who was attempting a political comeback. Greitens resigned in 2018 amid a sex scandal and accusation of campaign misconduct, and subsequently faced abuse allegations from his ex-wife, which he has denied

Schmitt, the Attorney General, emerged from a crowded field that included two members of Congress, Reps. Vicky Hartzler and Billy Long.

Former-President Donald Trump stayed out of the race, issuing a tongue-in-cheek statement supporting "Eric" on the eve of the primary -- leaving it up to voters' interpretation whether that meant Schmitt or Greitens.

A MEMBER OF THE 'IMPEACHMENT 10' IS DEFEATED

Rep. Peter Meijer became the second of the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach former-President Donald Trump to be ousted in a primary Tuesday, losing to Trump-endorsed conservative challenger John Gibbs, CNN projected.

Democrats played a role in boosting Gibbs -- a calculated decision that has become a flashpoint, angering some Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans.

Meijer, a freshman, voted to impeach Trump just days after taking office, after the insurrection of January 6, 2021. Gibbs, meanwhile, backed Trump's lies about widespread fraud in the 2020 election.

Meijer's loss means the Grand Rapids-based 3rd District seat will be one of the most competitive House contests in November's midterm elections.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, eyeing the seat as a possible pick-up opportunity, spent more than $300,000 on television ads seeking to bolster Gibbs with pro-Trump GOP primary voters by portraying him as a Trump-aligned conservative.

In Washington, two more Republicans who voted to impeach Trump, Reps. Jaime Herrera Beutler and Dan Newhouse, were attempting to survive their own primaries. The state's open, non-partisan primary system in which the top two finishers regardless of party advance to November's general election made them more difficult targets for Trump and his supporters.

UNKNOWNS IN ARIZONA

Arizona's race for the Republican nomination for governor could depend on whether former-President Donald Trump's supporters turned out in force on election day in a state that conducts its contests largely by mail.

Karrin Taylor Robson, a former member of the Arizona Board of Regents who is backed by former-Vice President Mike Pence and outgoing Gov. Doug Ducey, led former television journalist Kari Lake, a Trump-endorsed election denier, in the early returns Wednesday morning.

But the early results were largely mail-in ballots. Votes cast on election day were expected to favor Lake -- a result of Trump's years-long effort to undermine faith in mail-in voting.

The Arizona gubernatorial primary was the most significant contest in a set of primaries that tested Trump's influence over the GOP.

If Trump's slate of statewide candidates in Arizona advances to the general election, they'd be positioned to take over the election machinery of one of the nation's most important presidential battleground states if they win in November.

Blake Masters, the venture capitalist endorsed by Trump and backed by millions in spending from GOP megadonor Peter Thiel, led the state's GOP primary to take on Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly.

State Rep. Mark Finchem, a Trump-endorsed "Stop the Steal" activist who has said the state legislature should be able to overturn voters' will in presidential elections, led the GOP primary for Secretary of State. Democrats saw a tight race between Maricopa County recorder Adrian Fontes and state Rep. Reginald Bolding.

And in the Attorney General's race, Trump's preferred candidate, election denier Abraham Hamadeh led.

DIXON VICTORY IN MICHIGAN GOVERNOR'S RACE SETS UP REFERENDUM ON COVID POLICIES

Tudor Dixon, the conservative commentator endorsed by Trump in the final days of the race and backed by large factions of the Michigan Republican establishment, won the state's GOP primary to take on Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, CNN projected.

The clash in Michigan could be one of the nation's most competitive Governor's races.

Whitmer has cast herself as a bulwark for abortion rights in a state where Republicans have sought to enforce a 1931 law that would impose a near-total ban on abortion.

Dixon, meanwhile, framed the race in her victory speech Tuesday night as a referendum on restrictions Whitmer imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dixon, a mother of four who is backed by former-Education Secretary Betsy DeVos's family, is also an advocate of school choice — potentially positioning education as a marquee issue in November's midterm election.

PROGRESSIVES SUFFER ANOTHER DEFEAT IN MICHIGAN

Rep. Haley Stevens' projected Democratic primary victory in Michigan's newly drawn 11th Congressional District over fellow Rep. Andy Levin marks another blow against progressives in what has been a mostly disappointing primary season.

It's also a resounding victory for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, and its super PAC, United Democracy Project, which has spent millions backing moderate, more staunchly pro-Israel candidates in Democratic primaries.

Stevens and Levin are both supportive of Israel, but Levin -- who is Jewish -- has been more willing to criticize its government's treatment of Palestinians and is the lead sponsor of the Two-State Solution Act.

Progressive Democrats, frequently targeted by AIPAC spending this primary season, have fumed at fellow Democrats for accepting or courting support from the group, which has also contributed to Republican election deniers. AIPAC has defended the practice, arguing that its policy goals need bipartisan support.

J Street, a liberal pro-Israel group that has clashed with AIPAC, tried to boost Levin with a $700,000 July ad buy, but that sum paled in comparison to the millions bundled by AIPAC and more than $4 million spend by UDP.

Only one Cabinet member has ever been impeached and tried (Grant's Secretary of War, William Belknap, who resigned before the Senate vote of 35-25 in favor of conviction for graft and corruption, which failed to meet the 2/3rds threshold by 5 votes).

One Senator was impeached and tried (William Blount of Tennessee) with the Senate voting to dismiss the impeachment due to lack of jurisdiction (as he had been expelled by the Senate already and by the fact that Senators do not meet the definition of a "civil officer" or "officer" under the Article II criteria for eligibility for being impeached).

3 presidents have been impeached and tried (Andrew Johnson, who was acquitted due to the majority being one vote short of the two-thirds threshold in a 35-19 vote in favor of conviction; Bill Clinton, who was acquitted with a 45-55 vote on perjury and a 50-50 vote on obstruction of justice, and; Donald Trump, the only president, and indeed only official, to have been impeached and tried twice, with an acquittal in the first time due to a vote of 48–52 on abuse of power and 47–53 on obstruction of Congress and acquitted the second time with a 57–43 in favor of conviction on incitement of insurrection)

Otherwise it's all been judges (including SCOTUS justices) who have been impeached and tried - of the 20 federal officials impeached and tried, judges account for 15 of those, with 8 being convicted and removed. 3 not convicted and removed but resigned, and 4 acquitted. No judge has been acquitted in an impeachment since 1933.

This is a non-witchy post but part of my craft and beliefs is spreading awareness about the world around us.

Midterm elections are coming up and you need to be prepared. What can you do? Learn about midterms and the importance of them, do your research on your candidates, and go vote!

Why is this important?

Less people show up to vote during midterms but they are just as important as the Presidential and general election.

Unlike Presidential elections, these elections depend on the popular vote, meaning your vote really matters here! 

What are the Primaries?

The primary vote, happening on May 3rd, are elections that political parties use to select candidates for a general election. Then each party’s candidates run against each other in the midterm election. (FVAP.gov)

What are we voting for?

This is where we will vote for the US Senate and the House of Representatives. Depending on your state, county, or city, other government positions may be voted for as well. 

You can find out who’s on your ballot by finding your election office website or by going to Ballotpedia’s “who’s on my ballot?” tool.

These seats are the people who make laws in your city, county, state, and country. It’s important that we vote for people who represent what we want and what we need out of our government.

What is the US Senate?

The Senate is composed of 100 Senators, 2 for each state.

According to the whitehouse’s website, The Senate has the sole power to confirm those of the President’s appointments that require consent, and to provide advice and consent to ratify treaties. There are, however, two exceptions to this rule: the House must also approve appointments to the Vice Presidency and any treaty that involves foreign trade. The Senate also tries impeachment cases for federal officials referred to it by the House.

What is the House of Representatives?

The House has several powers assigned exclusively to it, including the power to initiate revenue bills, impeach federal officials, and elect the President in the case of an Electoral College tie.

In order to pass legislation and send it to the President for his or her signature, both the House and the Senate must pass the same bill by majority vote. If the President vetoes a bill, they may override his veto by passing the bill again in each chamber with at least two-thirds of each body voting in favor. (Whitehouse.gov)

Why should you care?

Currently, in the Senate, there are 34 seats on the line, with 14 Democrats up for reelection. Republicans hold 50 seats, meaning Democrats will need to maintain their current number of seats, 48, plus win three more to attain an outright majority. (Teenvogue 2022)

I'll level with you, it takes all of 30 minutes to look up who's on your ballot, a quick google search for each person, and decide who you're going to vote for.

I know the world is very scary right now and us younger generations have been treated like we don’t know anything and told that we can’t do anything. That's bullshit, we can and will do something about this damn world we've inherited.

So, if you're 18, or will be 18 by the 8th of November, you can register and vote!

If you’re already registered but would like to check your registration status (it can sometimes change if you’ve changed your name recently or in the past two years since the last election) you can often find your voter’s status on your state’s election office website.

Here’s where you can find out how, when, and where you can vote.

If you aren't available on November 8th for whatever reason, there are ways that you can do an absentee vote, just go to your election office website and look for "absentee voting" or "absentee ballot".

So go out and vote, remind your friends and family to vote, and make sure you do your research on each candidate before voting!

If you're not a US citizen, feel free to reblog or remind your US friends to go out and vote. The laws in the USA can still impact other countries so it's still important to spread the word.

The republicans are probably gonna win the House, but it will be by the closest margin in American history, even smaller than the Democrats in 2020, like single digit dissents away from a tie/flip. It's gonna be decided by recounts over the next few weeks or months, but come January 3rd the republicans will probably have a plurality and be given the speakership anyway. And you know that means all the nutjobs are gonna become committee chairs, green and boebert and jim jordan and all the moat unhinged election deniers and insurrectionists will have complete control over the legislative agenda and nuke any and all attempts at compromise on principle alone. I'd also expect them to invite a bunch of January 6 rioters to visit the Capitol for a photo-op just to rub salt in the wound, "it feels good to be back."

Oh, and impeachment proceedings will start on day one. They'll vote on it in January or February, as soon as they have 218 guaranteed votes. Biden will be acquited in the senate 52-48 or 53-47, maybe more, but that's not why republicans are gonna do it. They just want to rapid fire impeach Biden at least 3 times so trump is no longer the most impeached president anymore. They'll spread it out over 2023 so they can pretend it isn't a publicity stunt for their circus show.

Blog Post 4: Cultural History

            South Korea has had a very rocky history and it still continues to this day due to the dictatorship of North Korea and the threats that it brings being so close. This was shown almost immediately after Korea was proclaimed in 1948 with the south declaring independence in 1950. This sparked the Korean War due to differences in political ideology due to south getting US support as a democracy and the USSR and China backing up North Korea and communism. The South Korean war went on until 1953 and 2 million lives were lost in the war. This war strengthened the identity of south Korea being a democracy led country and its cultural values that they fought for 70+ years ago are still intact.

The second important event in South Koreas history is the military coup and the return to democracy from 1961-1980s. The martial law was enacted after the military took control and it ended with the General Park being assassinated. This tells us that the perception of the military being in control was very negative as following the assassination the country returned to a democracy where the constitution was changed to allow direct elections of the president. This also led to the sunshine policy where south Korea would offer unconditional support to North Korea. This sunshine policy has been around ever since which it only faltering a couple times throughout history.

            This takes us into the 3rd important part of South Korean history, the continued conflict and tensions with North Korea. In 2010, North Korea sank a naval ship of South Koreas which resulted in trade being cut off between the two. This was not the first and it certainly wasn’t the last conflict that the south and north Koreans would get into as even today it came out that North Koreas leader Kim Jong un “has no desire for talks and repeats a threat to destroy the south if provoked.” –Kim Tong-Hyung (Associated Press). This is only 5 years after it seemed that everything was going good as the north and south agreed to march under the same flag in the 2018 winter Olympics also in 2018 Kim Jong-un became the firth leader to enter the south. The constant threats of war from Kim Jong-Un is very alarming to the citizens of south Korea as many of them just want to feel safe but the constant fear of war is always looming over them. The perception of war in South Korea has changed over time as they started their country having to defend themselves and followed by a military coup while today, they just want to relax and not have to worry about the threats from the north. They are still strong on the cultural values that the country was founded on and fought for 70 years ago despite all the conflicts and political catastrophes the country has gone through even recently with a president being impeached in 2016.

Is everyone a bunch of idiots. I'm getting so dang frustrated with woke leftist and the right. Did anyone learn anything in the 3rd grade or pay attention in government class their senior year of high school.

The President is above all civil & criminal courts. Only Congress can call to the floor any questionable acts made by the president, while in office, to vote for impeachment. If we allow the federal, supreme or civil court judges and DA's to prosecut President's decisions, choices or agreements that may or may not be outside his realm. He wouldn't be the leader of our country would he? No! That would make DA's and Judges the president of our country. Besides, if you know that a Federal DA could indict you at the end of your term of presidency. Would you ever want to dream to someday be the president of the United States? Would you run? The president is above the law, on top of the point on a pyramid. He only has to answer to God. For we are a nation under God.

AND... WE ARE NOT A DEMOCRACY COUNTRY. NO!

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s (Wash.) loss in the Republican primary in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District is the latest victory for former President Trump, who has proved in recent months that his hold on the party remains firm.

Her loss comes exactly a week after Rep. Peter Meijer (R) also lost his primary to a Trump-backed challenger in Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District. 

But Herrera Beutler was one of the prominent faces of the movement in the House to impeach Trump, making her loss on Tuesday that much sweeter of a victory for the former president. 

“This is the trend we’ve seen with the Republicans who voted for impeachment,” said Jennifer Lim, the executive director of Republican Women for Progress, a group that has been critical of the Republican Party’s evolution under the former president. 

Herrera Beutler appeared to be leading last week after the state’s primary night. But by the time Tuesday evening came along, her main opponent Joe Kent was ahead of the incumbent congresswoman by 928 votes out of the 200,000 votes that were cast, according to the Seattle Times.
