INTRODUCTION! ── ˙ ̟ the echo !!

𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 :: get to know porsche's bet for the newest legend in the making in formula one, dubbed as the echo.

𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞 :: i've been absolutely hooked in @disneyprincemuke vettel reincarnated's series and i have always loved fem!drivers so i decided to give my own take on this <3. | can definitely be read as a reader insert, but the driver will driver under a specific flag and related to a famous driver! even so, physical descriptions will not be given, so you can definitely picture yourself

our fem!driver has a few titles to her name! the most well known, echo, comes from her championship winning f3 & f2 seasons, where she was consistently the fastest driver in the grid, leaving behind only a faint trace of her presence for the other drivers to see.

other nicknames include "lightning" due to her great performances on wet races (as the media says, the only thing faster than the rain is the lightning.), "pg" (stands for both princess of the grid, which is an old karting nickname, and parental guide, given due to her young age), and the legacy.

she is the daughter of ex- formula one driver, rubens barrichello. she drivers under the brazilian flag. i picture her as the middle child, so that would place her date of birth between '01 & '04.

has a streak of four consecutive championship winning years: the italian formula 4 in 2019, freca in 2020, formula 3 in 2021 and formula 2 in 2022.

art grand prix girlie! has been with the french team for both her f3 and f2 seasons.

she was a red bull junior, but was suddenly cut from the team after her formula 3 season. helmut mark claimed that she wasn't consistent enough to justify a contract renewal, which was clearly bullshit as she had literally won the championship.

competed in formula 2 without an academy, but was in talks with porsche to join their team.

committing to her lightning nickname, she chose 95 as her number!

grew up in the paddock! her dad loved to take her around the world with him, and she became a familiar face to all crew and drivers. although she is the youngest of the current grid, she is closer to the oldest guys due to knowing them since she was very young.

outside of formula 1, her closest friends are gabriel bortoleto, felipe drugovich, frederik vesti, liam lawson and clément novalak.

within formula 1, she is closest to fernando alonso, lewis hamilton (both who met her when she was a baby), mick schumacher (her teammate at porsche), lando norris, alex albon and oscar piastri. but she is friendly with everyone, and tries to know them better — it does help that she is a social butterfly who could talk to the walls even if they don't answer.

about porsche: have been in the talks of joining the grid for a long time, and finally got their approval for 2023. they could go for veteran drivers but decided against it, placing their bets of mick schumacher, who had just been dropped from haas, and y/n barrichello, the f2 champion.

when the news dropped, it was the talk of the town! not only she would be the first female to compete in formula one in several years, but the duo barrichello-schumacher would be present again in the grid!

actually loves doing grill the grid and other challenges. some people think it's the rookie rush, but she has always loved playing those games.

has the biggest fat girl crush on susie wolff. would kiss the ground she walks if she could.

still needs a lot pr training due to amount of cursing and off-pocket things she says. apparently saying "i'll throw myself in front of verstappen's car and change the trajectory of his entire life" is not socially acceptable, neither is saying that she's plotting his accidental death.

Paying for it doesn't make it a market

Anyone who says "If you're not paying for the product, you're the product" has been suckered in by Big Tech, whose cargo-cult version of markets and the discipline they impose on companies.

Here's the way that story goes: companies that fear losing your business will treat you better, because treating you worse will cost them money. Since ad-supported media gets paid by advertisers, they are fine with abusing you to make advertisers happy, because the advertiser is the customer, and you are the product.

This represents a profound misunderstanding of how even capitalism's champions describe its workings. The purported virtue of capitalism is that it transforms the capitalist's greed into something of broad public value, by appealing to the capitalist's fear. A successful capitalist isn't merely someone figures out how to please their customers – they're also someone who figures out how to please their suppliers.

That's why tech platforms were – until recently – very good to (some of) their workforce. Technical labor was scarce and so platforms built whimsical "campuses" for tech workers, with amenities ranging from stock options to gourmet cafeterias to egg-freezing services for those workers planning to stay at their desks through their fertile years. Those workers weren't the "customer" – but they were treated better than any advertiser or user.

But when it came to easily replaced labor – testers, cleaning crew, the staff in those fancy cafeterias – the situation was much worse. Those workers were hired through cut-out shell companies, denied benefits, even made to enter via separate entrances on shifts that were scheduled to minimize the chance that they would ever interact with one of the highly paid tech workers at the firm.

Likewise, advertisers may be the tech companies' "customers" but that doesn't mean the platforms treat them well. Advertisers get ripped off just like the rest of us. The platforms gouge them on price, lie to them about advertising reach, and collude with one another to fix prices and defraud advertisers:

Now, it's true that the advertisers used to get a good deal from the platforms, and that it came at the expense of the users. Facebook lured in users by falsely promising never to spy on them. Then, once the users were locked in, Facebook flipped a switch, started spying on users from asshole to appetite, and then offered rock-bottom-priced, fine-grained, highly reliable ad-targeting to advertisers:

But once those advertisers were locked in, Facebook turned on them, too. Of course they did. The point of monopoly power isn't just getting too big to fail and too big to jail – it's getting too big to care:

This is the thing that "if you're not paying for the product, you're the product" fails to comprehend. "If you're not paying for the product" is grounded in a cartoonish vision of markets in which "the customer is king" and successful businesses are those who cater to their customers – even at the expense of their workers and suppliers – will succeed.

In this frame, the advertiser is the platforms' customer, the customer is king, the platform inflicts unlimited harm upon all other stakeholders in service to those advertisers, the advertisers are so pleased with this white-glove service that they willingly pay a handsome premium to use the platform, and so the platform grows unimaginably wealthy.

But of course, if the platforms inflict unlimited harms upon their users, those users will depart, and then no amount of obsequious catering to advertisers will convince them to spend money on ads that no one sees. In the cargo-cult conception of platform capitalism, the platforms are able to solve this problem by "hacking our dopamine loops" – depriving us of our free will with "addictive" technologies that keep us locked to their platforms even when they grow so terrible that we all hate using them.

This means that we can divide the platform economy into "capitalists" who sell you things, and "surveillance capitalists" who use surveillance data to control your mind, then sell your compulsive use of their products to their cherished customers, the advertisers.

Surveillance capitalists like Google are thus said to have only been shamming when they offered us a high-quality product. That was just a means to an end: the good service Google offered in its golden age was just bait to trick us into handing over enough surveillance data that they could tune their mind-control technology, strip us of our free will, and then sell us to their beloved advertisers, for whom nothing is too good.

Meanwhile, the traditional capitalists – the companies that sell you things – are the good capitalists. Apple and Microsoft are disciplined by market dynamics. They won't spy on you because you're their customer, and so they have to keep you happy.

All this leads to an inexorable conclusion: unless we pay for things with money, we are doomed. Any attempt to pay with attention will end in a free-for-all where the platforms use their Big Data mind-control rays to drain us of all our attention. It is only when we pay with money that we can dicker over price and arrive at a fair and freely chosen offer.

This theory is great for tech companies: it elevates giving them money to a democracy-preserving virtue. It reframes handing your cash over to a multi-trillion dollar tech monopolist as good civics. It's easy to see why those tech giants would like that story, but boy, are you a sap if you buy it.

Because all capitalists are surveillance capitalists…when they can get away with it. Sure, Apple blocked Facebook from spying on Ios users…and then started illegally, secretly spying on those users and lying about it, in order to target ads to those users:

And Microsoft spies on every Office 365 user and rats them out to their bosses ("Marge, this analytics dashboard says you're the division's eleventh-worst speller and twelfth-worst typist. Shape up or ship out!"). But the joke's on your boss: Microsoft also spies on your whole company and sells the data about it to your competitors:

The platforms screw anyone they can. Sure, they lured in advertisers with good treatment, but once those advertisers were locked in, they fucked them over just as surely as they fucked over their users.

The surveillance capitalism hypothesis depends on the existence of a hypothetical – and wildly improbably – Big Data mind-control technology that keeps users locked to platforms even when the platform decays. Mind-control rays are an extraordinary claim supported by the thinnest of evidence (marketing materials from the companies as they seek to justify charging a premium to advertisers, combined with the self-serving humblebrags of millionaire Prodigal Tech Bros who claim to have awakened to the evil of using their dopamine-hacking sorcerous powers on behalf of their billionaire employers).

There is a much simpler explanation for why users stay on platforms even as they decline in quality: they are enmeshed in a social service that encompasses their friends, loved ones, customers, and communities. Even if everyone in this sprawling set of interlocking communities agrees that the platform is terrible, they will struggle to agree on what to do about it: where to go next and when to leave. This is the economists' "collective action problem" – a phenomenon with a much better evidentiary basis than the hypothetical, far-fetched "dopamine loop" theory.

To understand whom a platform treats well and whom it abuses, look not to who pays it and who doesn't. Instead, ask yourself: who has the platform managed to lock in? The more any stakeholder to a platform stands to lose by leaving, the worse the platform can treat them without risking their departure. Thus the beneficent face that tech companies turn to their most cherished tech workers, and the hierarchy of progressively more-abusive conditions for other workers – worse treatment for those whose work-visas are tied to their employment, and the very worst treatment for contractors testing the code, writing the documentation, labelling the data or cleaning the toilets.

If you care about how people are treated by platforms, you can't just tell them to pay for services instead of using ad-supported media. The most important factor in getting decent treatment out of a tech company isn't whether you pay with cash instead of attention – it's whether you're locked in, and thus a flight risk whom the platform must cater to.

It's perfectly possible for market dynamics to play out in a system in which we pay with our attention by watching ads. More than 50% of all web users have installed an ad-blocker, the largest boycott in the history of civilization:

But ad-blocking is only possible on an open platform. A closed, locked-down platform that is illegal to modify isn't a walled garden, a fortress that keeps out the bad guys – it's a walled prison that locks you in, a prisoner of the worst impulses of the tech giant that built it. Apple can defend you from other companies' spying ways, but when Apple decides to spy on you, it's a felony to jailbreak your Iphone and block Apple's surveillance:

I am no true believer in markets – but the people who say that paying for products will "align incentives" and make tech better claim to believe in the power of markets to make everyone better off. But real markets aren't just places where companies sell things – they're also places where companies buy things. Monopolies short-circuit the power of customer choice to force companies to do better. But monopsonies – markets dominated by powerful buyers – are just as poisonous to the claimed benefits of markets.

Even if you are "the product" – that is, even if you're selling your attention to a platform to package up and sell to an advertiser – that in no way precludes your getting decent treatment from the platform. A world where we can avail ourselves of blockers, where interoperablity eases our exodus from abusive platforms, where privacy law sets a floor below which we cannot bargain is a world where it doesn't matter if you're "the product" or "the customer" – you can still get a square deal.

The platforms used to treat us well and now treat us badly. That's not because they were setting a patient trap, luring us in with good treatment in the expectation of locking us in and turning on us. Tech bosses do not have the executive function to lie in wait for years and years.

Rather, as tech platforms eliminated competition, captured their regulators and expanded their IP rights so that interoperability was no longer a threat, they became too big to care whether any of their stakeholders were happy. First they came for the users, sure, but then they turned on the publishers, the advertisers, and finally, even their once-pampered tech workers:

MLK said that "the law can't make a man love me, but it can stop him from lynching me." It's impossible to get tech bosses to believe you deserve care and decency, but you can stop them from abusing you. The way to do that is by making them fear you – by abolishing the laws that create lock-in, by legally enshrining a right to privacy, by protecting competition.

It's not by giving them money. Paying for a service does not make a company fear you, and anyone who thinks they can buy a platform's loyalty by paying for a service is a simp. A corporation is an immortal, transhuman colony organism that uses us as inconvenient gut-flora: no matter how much you love it, it will never love you back. It can't experience love – only fear.

Section 4: Workin’ Boys talkback

Chad was not included in WB because it was deemed that nobody could live up to the legend. This spawned the “Darren 4 Chad” movement in chat

The Workin’ Boys album will be out around next week if all goes to plan. It is 5 tracks and would include Mariah’s version of the Show Stoppin’ Number monologue as well as at least some of her singing it (as seen in the show; hoping for a full version!!)

The programmes made for Workin’ Girls had very detailed bios, which hopefully when in full quality will be readable when paused. This may set up the potential for the Workin’ Girls actresses to be in future HF projects where this can be explored

The Black Book was originally supposed to debut in Workin’ Boys, in its original form in 2020

The 2020 version was planned as a feature-length film but eventually it was decided that it was confusing and remodelled.

The Summoning was supposed to be in Workin’ Boys – the producer would have tricked Hidgens into making the girls perform a ritual; it was realised that this didn’t make much sense so the song was transferred to NPMD

July 30, 2023 (filmed), February 14, 2024 (released) -

We finally have a BB of Jk’s Inkigayo stage performance! A smiling Tae arrives to support him -

Tae, at first, stands over Jk. Jk knows who’s entered the room, even with his eyes closed. He clearly was expecting Tae, and he “greets” him by asking, “What?” It should be noted, as others have pointed out, that they didn’t greet each other with the standard “Hello” or “How are you?” This is another indicator of how close they are and how much time they spend with each other to skip these formalities.

There’s then a noticeable cut, with Tae now air-straddling Jk. The subsequent interaction between them is so incredibly domestic! Jk is adorably pouty as he twice asks Tae, in a soft voice, where he’d been.

Tae explains in an equally super soft, low tone that he had been practicing. Jk repeats in an inquiring, yet still soft tone, “Practice?” Tae further explains that he was at dance then violin practice, before working out.

The Evolution of GhostSoap Redux

Continuing thoughts on how Ghost and Soap's relationship has changed over the course of mw(19), mwii(22) and mwiii(23)

Spread out amongst several posts. This will be long 😅

BEWARE SPOILERS TO MWIII(23) !

I've had time to settle my thoughts on Ghostsoap in mwiii (23) and this will go more into depth of the re-contextualising of Ghost and Soap's relationship in mwii (22) from the verdansk mission: "Flashpoint".

Flashpoint is set 4 years to mwiii(23). The game places it as April 6, 2019. This is important to us because it sets a different potential first mission (meet cute lmao) between the two and thus changes the tone of their interactions in mwii (22)

So let's set up a timeline with the available dates. Thankfully, the game sets some very concrete dates for us. Not all missions are included.*

2019

Flashpoint - April 06, 2019

First canonical appearance of SAS Ghost and Soap

So now that's done. I've mostly ignored Farah and Alex and focused on Price, Ghost, Gaz, Soap and Nikolai as it pertains to relationships within the core group of Price/Ghost/Gaz/Soap.

What can we make of this ?

Well, a couple things.

We can now say that from 2019 to the events of "Kill or Capture" in 2022, Ghost and Soap have most likely worked together on missions before. The timeline shows that they at least had to have met in Dec 2020 in Verdansk as Soap had called for backup to Price and group.

That makes it actually at least 3 years of knowledge of each other prior to mwii(22). So a total of 4 years + potentially at the start of mwiii(23).

It also shows us how quickly their relationship changed from the Alone mission in '22 despite the 3 years of prior knowledge they had since '19.

Let it be said that it took 1 week, ONLY 7 DAYS!! to change Ghost and Soap's relationship. 7 days out of a total at least 3 years total.

Ghost started at not even bothering to name Soap in 2019, to presumably basic Soap/Mactavish/sergeant for the next 3 years.

Cut to the events in mwii(22). Lets say beginning at "Kill or Capture" and finishing at "Alone" and suddenly Ghost ends up having made up his own personal nickname that no one else can use for Soap in just those 7 days.

I posit that this was in part due to "Kill or Capture" in '22 being the first mission that Soap has directly worked under Ghost's command.

This is all hypotheticals and guesswork so take it as you may.

Assuming Ghost was mainly a solo mission sort of guy, let's also assume he mostly helped as sniper overwatch if he ever had team missions (like in Flashpoint). Most 141 missions have him taking that position as well, so it's safe to say he is support most of the time.

Given that assumption, it's also likely that Soap and Ghost had to have interacted mainly on comms and any physical meeting would be restricted to transport via heli or otherwise.

It's possible Soap and Ghost have worked together on a more physical basis (aka Ghost leading Soap on a squad), but given how much Ghost seemed to be testing Soap in "Kill or Capture" I find that somewhat unlikely.

In 2019 we see how brusque Ghost is with Soap. It's very likely that Ghost was largely monosyllabic with Soap pre or post missions to Flashpoint.

Considering Soap's propensity to chatter in 2022 and 2023, it's also very likely Soap annoyed the hell out of Ghost on comms. Lol.

This could explain why Ghost was so dismissive of having Soap as his sergeant in "Kill or Capture", despite working together 3 years ago.

I, and arguably most of fandom had theorised that "Kill or Capture" was the first mission that Soap and Ghost ever had together. And we weren't quite right, but we weren't completely wrong either.

With Flashpoint, it's obvious now that was not quite true. It even suggests in it that Ghost and Soap had worked together prior to even that, as there was no formal introduction between the two.

This dramatically changes how Ghost's dialogue and Soap's to a lesser degree can be read in mwii(22) and implies much much more if you consider how they interact with each other in '23.

So why does it matter when Ghost and Soap's relationship started?

With mwiii(23) we can now definitively tell when Ghost and Soap's relationship changed. We now have a rough basis of a timeline and we can track down the differences between '19 -'22 and then '22- '23. Its important because we can see how their relationship deepens and how it changed within a span of 3 years, 7 compelling days and 1 heartwrenching year later.

For all that mwiii(23) was lax with explicit Ghostsoap moments, it's rich in how much context we gain to their relationship. We see how Ghost changes and how his relationships differ between 141. It's an interesting and compelling look at both Ghost and Soap's characters.

In this discussion I separate this analysis into 3 parts. Part 2 will cover the implications of "Flashpoint" on mwii (22), with discussion line by line. Part 3 will most likely go over comparisons a year makes from the events in '22 to '23. (This might be subject to change as I get further into the analysis)

Who talks to who, for how long and about what, in The Old Guard (2020) dir. Gina Prince Bythewood?

I got curious and so I watched the movie taking a lot of timestamp notes. way back three and a half years ago now, I watched this movie for the first time bc I like gritty action movies, and it's a really good one of those. I'm still obsessed with it all this time later because it's full to the brim with well-drawn characters who have compelling relationships with each other, and boy howdy does the data show it.

I was especially curious about who spends how much time alone together on screen, so I coded all the scenes with that in mind, and I found some really interesting patterns in the breakdown of scenes where just two characters talk, where one character is the sole focus, and when three characters talk.

the winners of course are Nile and Andy, our dual protagonists, who spend 10% of the movie's total runtime alone together. they also spend a lot of time with our dual friendly antagonists, Booker and Copley. scenes featuring combinations of just these four characters make up 40% of the total runtime.

Joe and Nicky show up less in this analysis because they're side characters who mostly appear in group scenes, but wow are they richly drawn side characters. they're key players in all but two scenes where four or more named characters talk.

of the 12 min that our main characters are alone together on screen, almost fully half is super duper antagonistic:

4:26 is the kidnapping sequence

1:29 is their conversation outside after Nile's nightmare featuring the iconic "me and those three men in there will keep you safe" "like Quynh?"

and 7 seconds is Nile glaring daggers at Andy after walking over all those bodies in the church

the other half breaks down like this:

2:14 is them connecting over their mortal families — where Andy makes Nile give her phone back at the end

1:45 is Nile telling Andy she's not doing this, that she's going back to her family — Andy pushes with "we'd do the same for you" but then relents and gives Nile the car

50 seconds of them gearing up for the last segment of the fight — Nile tries to get Andy to wear a bulletproof vest, she jokes around with "is this gonna be like the last signal?" — it's operations-focused but there's a real warmth between them by this point in the movie (this scene starts at 1:41:45, just 13 min before the credits roll)

and 1:29 of Andy looking at Nile like she hung the moon (which, extremely valid and relatable!) and Nile saying that the time Andy's got left "you're gonna spend it with us"

Nile has an uninterrupted 4:18 sequence with Copley that speed runs the same general shape of her arc with Andy, hella antagonistic to teamwork, though the latter here is more of a professional camaraderie than the real warmth we see Nile develop for Andy.

in this context Nile's arc with Booker is remarkably different. their first scene alone together is 1:11 in total, intercut with Andy killing mercs elsewhere in the church, and it's sort of their only scene with friction between them. Booker keeps telling Nile to wait for the signal without explaining what that means, annoyingly continuing Andy's grand tradition of not fucking answering Nile's reasonable questions, ugh. though another way of framing this is of course that he's too busy packing her a change of clothes while showing off his tits for her. as I noted in a previous meta, the end of this sequence is the one time Booker lies to Nile (claiming he doesn't know who the mercs are when he has at least a basic idea, though we don't know for sure whether Copley involved him in this specific plan).

after this Nile and Booker have two more scenes alone together and they're both extended conversations: 3:14 for their conversation alone in the cave after Andy leaves, and 1:18 when Nile joins Booker on the balcony outside the bar. both of these conversations are remarkably intimate for how little these characters have interacted beforehand. remember, 6:02 total of Nile and Andy alone together with heavy animosity (Andy shot Nile in the head ffs!) before things between them started to warm up. granted, the conversation where they first start to warm to each other is right after Nile's cave scene with Booker and Andy's scene with Celeste, so an argument could be made that this was the point in the movie where Nile started to feel ready to open up to the other immortals generally and her first one-on-one conversation once she got there was with Booker before Andy. I'm not saying you have to ship them just because they get so close so quick, but the numbers sure do make it clear that us BoNers aren't making this shit up out of nowhere.

Nile and Booker's heart-to-heart in the mine is the third-longest one-on-one conversation in the whole movie — third after Andy kidnapping Nile and Nile's sequence with Copley, which are both heavy on action and exposition and antagonism, making this the longest intimate conversation in the movie. their other heart-to-heart, 1:18 on the balcony outside the pub, is on par with Joe and Nicky's 1:17 in the van.

there's also a 51 sec sequence during the Merrick tower fight where it intercuts pretty much equally between three subsets of the action: Andy going off on her own with an axe, Joe waiting for Nicky to wake up after that head shot, and Nile and Booker being drift compatible when Nile's gun jams. we're not making this shit up out of nowhere.

ok back to our blorbos in chief. we get 4:07 of Nile as the sole focus, and 3:31 of the same for Andy.

the sequence of Nile going through hell on base just because she fucking lived (laser eyes @ her squad forever) lasts 1:14 and includes a few lines from minor characters. we get 15 sec of her first dreaming of the others and waking up unmoored, then a 20 sec reprise with her nightmare of the first person she killed. the sequence of her driving away from Copley's then figuring out what the empty gun clip means is 48 sec. and then, one of the things that stood out to me the most in really digging into these numbers: just how frequently and for how long the camera lingers on Nile's face in this movie.

36 seconds in the elevator

and a whopping 44 seconds of listening to Frank Ocean

that's fully 1 minute and thirty seconds of this movie's 2 hr 5 min credits-included runtime devoted exclusively to long takes of Nile Freeman's face.

Andy's sole-focus time is a little less tidy, because the majority of it isn't precisely focused on her like with Nile. we get 15 sec of her staring at her hand, realizing her immortality is gone. I could have coded all the pieces of the movie more granularly to find all the moments where we get Andy reaction shots, but I also could've done that with all of them and I'm but one humble spreadsheet lover, and it's more interesting to me that Gina primarily uses other kinds of film language to put us into Andy's perspective.

1:35 of her cutting through all those mercs in the church — other people are active in this scene, but they're not shown as people, and the horror of that is exactly the point, for the viewer, for Nile, and for Andy herself

41 sec of her voiceover at the opening of the movie, over clips of the kill floor scene

1 min of her moodily sitting in the car after the pharmacy and flashing back to Lykon's death

the Andy/Quynh flashback sequence that's a subset of Nicky and Joe narrating to Nile is 1:31, so counting that alongside this flashback here brings us to a total of 2:31 of Andy/Quynh(/Lykon) alone together screen time. almost precisely equal to Joe and Nicky's total 2:24 alone together.

further underlining Booker and Copley as our tritagonists, we get one scene of on-screen alone time for each of them: 32 seconds of Booker being drunk six months later and 28 seconds of Copley reacting to the kill floor footage. it's easy to focus on the Andy in a Union uniform element of this Copley scene, but a photo of his late wife is visible in almost every frame. I went back and double checked — only 3 sec of those 28 don't contain that photo of his wife displayed proudly between the kill floor footage and the Civil War photo, 3 sec of Copley in closeup. now that's what I call environmental storytelling.

we get almost exactly 5 min each with the sets Andy + Booker + Copley, Andy + Booker, and Andy + Nile + Booker. ABC and ANB conversations tend toward driving the plot and fleshing out detail about immortality, though a decent chunk of ANB in the "is this a Rodin?" part of the cave scene is Nile and Booker talking about following the money (their first moment of drift compatibility!) while Andy angsts nearby, and a decent chunk of ABC at Copley's place is Andy and Booker's heartbreaking "this is what you wanted" "not like this" exchange while Copley awkwardly hovers. just under half of Andy and Booker's 5:01 on screen alone together is about his betrayal, 2:13 across three scenes. the other half breaks out pretty evenly between them talking about Nile, making battle plans, and just being pals.

has any mid-budget gritty action movie ever done it better? even the infodumps are full of character and relationship details.

I also find it noteworthy that Booker and Copley are never alone together, and they never directly acknowledge anything about their relationship. we know from what they tell other characters that they've been in contact before the events of the movie, probably for some time in some detail. we know they worked together to ultimately enable the cartoon-villain antagonists to do their villainy. Copley is direct about how these results were absolutely not what he intended, and we can infer from Booker's behavior that he wasn't aiming for decades of medical torture either. but we get no information about how they feel about each other. now that I'm looking at it with this frame, it seems like the absence of information is itself a kind of telling — Booker and Copley maybe purposefully avoiding 1:1 contact, purposefully treating each other as mere acquaintances when others are around, because to do otherwise would be to look their guilt in the eye. oh shit I think I might have given myself a whole new meta idea on this tangent here: Copley and Booker as mirrors for each other.

disclaimer as we're nearing the end that there's inevitably going to be bias and error in something like this. I measured by seconds not milliseconds and I wasn't always precise about where I paused to note timestamps at scene changes. sometimes I included what ended up amounting to several seconds of establishing shots and sometimes I didn't. and there are a bunch of edge cases where there's more than one way to count who was an active part of which scenes, like for example:

I separated out Andy and Booker's opening motorcycle stalking and Don Quijote chat from the later part of what was probably just one scene in the script, where Booker talks to the hotel clerk while Andy interacts with tourists nearby

I included all as one Nile + Dizzy + Jay scene the sequence where Dizzy and Jay talk to each other about Nile before they go into the med tent and act shitty to her face about how Nile's still alive

I counted as Copley + Merrick the conversation in the car where Keane and Kozak are present and react on camera but don't have lines per se

similarly I counted as Andy + Booker the "she wants to talk to her family" exchange after Nile and Nicky leave the dinner table; Joe's still sitting there next to them but he doesn't say anything and the camera doesn't focus on him

I didn't try to delete the time where Andrei said/did stuff from the 4:26 Andy kidnaps Nile sequence but I did remove a Keane cut-away from a later Andy + Nile scene

so much has already been lovingly written about how well Joe and Nicky spend their short on-screen alone time and rightly so. I don't have anything new to add there so I'll take a moment instead to shout out to the 27 sec of Nicky telling Kozak to go fuck herself, and also the iconic Joe headbutting Merrick. fuck, this movie is so so good. every moment is a delight.

But there's a key difference between my own warnings about the enshittification that new "user friendly" technologies would engender and all those other AARP members' complaints: they were wrong, and I was right.

The underlying pathology of that enshittification wasn't the UI, or whether it involved an app store. As the Luddites knew, the important thing about a technology isn't what it does, but who it does it for and who it does it to:

The problem wasn't which technology we used. There is nothing inherent about touchscreens that makes them into prisons that trap users, rather than walled gardens that protect them.

Likewise, the problem wasn't who made that technology. We didn't swap wise UUCP Monks for venal tech bros. The early tech world was full of public-spirited sysops, but it was also full of would-be monopolists who tried – and failed – to get us to "stop talking to each other and start buying things":

If it wasn't the technology that killed the old, good internet, and if it wasn't the people who killed the old, good internet, where did the enshitternet come from?

It wasn't the wrong tech, it wasn't the wrong people: it was the wrong rules. After all, the Apple ][+ went on sale the year Ronald Reagan hit the campaign trail. Consumer tech was the first industry born after antitrust was dismantled, and it created the modern monopoly playbook: buying and merging with competitors. The resulting unity of purpose and anticompetitive profit margins allowed tech to capture its regulators and secure favorable court and legislative outcomes.

The simultaneous drawdown of antitrust enforcement and growth of tech meant that tech's long-standing cycle of renewal was ended. Tech companies that owed their existence to their ability to reverse-engineer incumbent companies' products and make interoperable replacements and add-ons were able to ban anyone else from doing unto them as they did unto the giants that came before them:

The pirates became admirals, and set about creating a "felony contempt of business model":

They changed the rules to ensure that they could "disrupt" anyone they chose, but could themselves mobilize the full might of the US government to prevent anyone from disrupting them:

The old, good internet was the internet we we able to make while tech was still realizing the new anticompetitive powers it had at its disposal, and it disappeared because every administration, R and D, from Reagan to Trump, yanked more and more Jenga blocks out of the antitrust tower.

In other words: the old, good internet was always doomed, because it was being frantically built in an ever-contracting zone of freedom to tinker, where technologies could be operated by and for the people who used them.

Today, the Biden administration has ushered in a new era of antitrust renewal, planting the seeds of a disenshittification movement that will tame corporate power rather than nurturing it:

The new, good internet is an internet where we seize the means of computation. It's an internet operated by and for the people who use it.

Hodgman is right. Nostalgia is a toxic impulse. The point of making a new, good internet isn't to revive the old, good internet. There were plenty of problems with the old, good internet. The point is to make a new, good internet that is the worthy successor to the old, good internet – and to consign the enshitternet to the scrapheap of history, an unfortunate transitional stage between one good internet and another.

edit 10/04 (European date) : wanted to change Bella to Y/n but it was too long. I'll keep Bella for the story, sorry again and enjoy !

I opened my eyes to only be met by a strong white light.

I tried to cover them by putting my hand but couldn't move, as if someone was pushing me deeper into the bed.

After some blinking, I finally could open my eyes without instantly closing them.

But as soon as I did, a nurse came in, looking at me with wide eyes and dropping her papers.

"Someone come here! She's awake!" She finally yelled going back

After some times, 4 doctors came in and started checking me.

"Mrs.Garcia, I'm Dr.Martinez and I'm the person who took care of you. Do you remember what happened?" A tall man said next to me while writing something

I opened my mouth to speak but nothing came out as if I forgot how to do so.

A nurse helped me drink some water and I felt much better but still couldn't talk.

I watched him with fear in my eyes

"You forgot what happened before?" I shook my head no, tears filling my eyes

"Mrs.Garcia, you had a major car accident and you've been in a coma for 2 years."

What the fuck.

"And I'm sorry but, it looks like your body has to wait until you can talk again."

Suddenly, the machines started beeping faster and faster as I panicked. I felt my heart beating faster and the last thing I saw, was the doctors trying to calm me.

And everything went dark again.

It's been a month since I was getting help to walk again and doing basic stuff but I still couldn't talk nor remember anything.

The doctor let me out of the hospital since I was doing well now. They said that I should get my memory back soon but I don't know when.

My mother came to visit me everyday when she could, of course she had to work but most of time she freed herself to see me.

I walked up to her as she hugged me.

"Oh my baby, finally they let you out!" she said kissing me everywhere on my face

I laughed and entered her car before she drove us home I guess.

After some minutes she parked her car in a hallway and I assumed we were finally home so I went outside but still didn't remember a single thing.

"Does it bring back memories baby?" my mother asked me, a hopeful smile on her face but it quickly faded when I shook my head no

We went in and still nothing. She showed me my room and phone, saying she had to back to work.

"I'm so sorry, I would've stayed with you but I have a lot of business. There's food on the oven if you're hungry or else you can order. I'll be back tonight, love you" she kissed my forehead and left

Now I don't know what I should do.

I went to take a shower since I felt dirty and grabbed my phone when I was done.

I opened instagram, hoping that everything will get back to me when I'll see my friends, if I had some.

When I opened the app, a profile caught my attention

He was famous, damn 13 million followers and he was following me.

I clicked on the message button and saw a conversation from 2020

February 14th 2020

Hola!

Bella?

Answer me please! :)

I'm worried Bella please answer :(

What's going on?

They said someone got into a car accident on the TV, I'm so scared please answer :(

Oh.

So we were friends.

After being hesitant, I finally clicked the button send and shut down my phone as I felt hungry.

I ate some leftover sushis and sat down on the couch when I remembered my phone and that boy.

Wow, at least something I remember.

Bella?

You're awake?

I'm coming over right now.

Was all he said, as soon as I read the last text, the bell rang.

I got up and opened the door to reveal a tall boy with fluffy hair and brown eyes, he looked so shocked to see me.

He looked so shocked, his eyes were wide open and his mouth slightly opened too.

He gently put his shaking hand on my cheek as if I would disappear if he was too rough.

"Bella I.. I can't believe you're there.." he marked a pause, looking at me as he was discovering my face again "can I hug you?" he asked

Oh hell no that's way too sweet.

I nodded and he wrapped his arms around my body, letting his head rest on my shoulder.

We stayed in that position for at least 3 minutes before he let me go.

"I have so many things to tell you.."

I looked at him, not knowing how to announce that I don't know who he is.

He closed the door and sat down on the couch, I sat next to him hesitating

"So.. As you know I've always wanted to play for a national team so-" I cut him by putting my hand on his chest, he looked up at me with a confused look

I sighed, grabbing my phone and began to type something

"I'm really sorry but I lost my memory since the accident. Could you please tell me who you are?"

He read the note and his face dropped, his hands were shaking and his eyes filled up with tears.

"Bella.. I.. You really don't remember me? Pablo? Pablito?" he asked me with a sad face which made me look at my feet "Why aren't you saying anything?" he whispered, waiting for an answer but didn't get one

"I also lost my ability of speaking for a while, I'm really sorry."

"Oh." was all he said "I'm sorry, I'm Pablo Gavi and we were bestfriends before your car accident."

Pablo started to explain to me everything.

We were bestfriends since little kids, we used to play football together.

He kept talking to me about the past for hours until I fell asleep on his shoulder without even noticing.

It's been a month since I got out of the hospital. Pablo helped me with my memory loss and I met his team and even became friends with Pedro.

Still no words but I feel like I will be able to speak soon.

I was currently putting on my red dress to go out to dinner with Pablo, he wanted to "have some luck" for the match against the Real Madrid by inviting me.

I put on my heels matching with my red dress (imagine whatever you want lol) and went down after grabbing my purse.

I opened the door to find Pablo with a black suit holding flowers in his hands, his face was red.

"I passed by a flower shop and thought about you so.. Here." he said handing me the flowers

I wildly smiled and kissed both of his cheeks which made him blush even harder.

I put the flower on the table before going back to him.

We arrived to the restaurant, I got out of the car but what I wasn't expecting was to see a lot of paparazzi around as if they were waiting for us.

Pablo grabbed my waist, holding me close to him as they all took several pictures, making my eyes hurt.

We finally arrived at our table and ordered after some minutes.

Pablo took my hand in his and looked at me deep in the eyes, smiling at me. He's so damn pretty..

"I'm so happy to have you back with me Bella, you don't realize how much I've missed you" I softly smiled at him, my eyes beginning to get watery

If only I could have my memories back.

"You're coming to my game right?" he asked

I nodded

"I wanted to ask you.." he started before letting my hand go "Could you please speak to me? I'd love to hear your voice"

What? But he knows damn well that I can't??

I looked at him with confusion on my eyes before shrugging, making him understand that I really can't.

His eyebrows furrowed.

"Come on Bella, do it for me please?" he begged

What the fuck?

I said nothing and that's when I saw him become angrier.

"Fine, I see." he got up and started to leave, I followed him outside and tried to grab his arm but he shoved my hand, walking angrily to his car

I watched him go, tears running down my cheeks without doing anything.

What did happen..

I took a taxi to get back home and immediately bumped into my bed, tears still flowing down my face.

I fell asleep without even noticing, shit I cried myself to sleep.

I woke up with a horrible headache and immediately went to take a shower, my eyes were red and puffy and I looked like a mess.

I got out of the shower and checked my phone to see if Pablo sent me anything but no.

Nothing.

I sighed and scrolled when I stopped to see a familiar picture.

It was me and Pablo at the restaurant

"PABLO GAVI SPOTTED WITH A GIRL, HIS NEW GIRLFRIEND?"

I checked the comments, immediately regretting my decision

"She's not even pretty."

"He could've done better"

"Who the fuck does this girl thinks she is?"

"I'll kick her ass"

As I was going to put my phone down, I received a text from Pedri

"Hey, you're coming to our match right? :)"

"Hola! Yes I am, see you!!"

He liked my message, I smiled to myself before starting to prepare myself.

I put on some grey nike shorts with my plain barca jersey and dunk low, adding some jewelry and makeup. I let my hair like that since it was already pretty.

I took my purse and called an uber, Pedri sent me my ticket so I could have access to the locker room and vip places.

I arrived to Camp Nou and went to the barca locker room

I entered and everyone looked at me

"Hola Bella!" they all said, some taping my back or shoulder, I waved before going to Pedri who was with Pablo himself

"Bella! I'm glad you came" he said hugging me

I felt a stare on my back but didn't really pay attention.

I stayed with the team a little before heading out to my seat.

"Bye Bella, you better cheer for us!" Dembélé said laughing while waving at me

I went to my seat and waited for the match to begin.

It was now half time, Barca was winning 2-0 scored by Gavi and Lewandoski.

Pablo didn't even look at me during the match which made me really sad but oh well, it's not my fault.

After the small break the match began again et this time when Pablo came out he locked his eyes with mine as he was walking.

Damn..

When he stoped looking at me I felt cold, as if his gaze was a blanket.

The referee whistled the start of the match and here we go again.

Lewandoski and Gavi approached the goal, the number 9 passed the ball to his teammate and he shot the ball and

GOAL !

I jumped, wanting to yell but of course I couldn't, Pablo managed to pull off his teammates and ran towards my seat, he jumped over the barrier and lifted me up in his arms.

I was agreeably surprised and let him hug me while laughing.

People around the stadium started whistling and yelling "Gavi" which made me laugh even harder.

"I'm so sorry, I wanna apologize in better circumstances but let me just dance this moment right now" he said grabbing my shoulders

I smiled at him and kissed his cheek, making him understand that it was fine.

He smiled one last time before getting back to the field, leaving me smiling like an idiot.

The match ended with 3-0 for Barca, I was so proud of them!

I went to the locker room but knows how, got lost.

I looked everywhere and understood that I was in the Madrid's side when I saw the team's logo on a wall.

I tried to go back but suddenly a door opened and someone grabbed my arm to a dark room.

I wanted to scream but nothing came out of my mouth.

I couldn't see anything, I only felt two hands pushing me on the cold ground and some people laughing.

I put my hands everywhere, trying to find the door but it was like the room was endless

The laughs kept growing louder and louder

I suddenly felt something hit my stomach which made me put my hand there

I opened my mouth to scream, hoping something will come out but still nothing

They kept hitting me everywhere and laugh, I was pretty sure my forehead was bleeding and I had bruises on my knees

That's when I felt something hard and cold banging my arm that I screamed as loud as I could as if I knew how to speak again

They all went silent and quickly left before getting caught

Not so long after the door opened and I saw the team coming inside, turning on the light

"Bella!" I recognized Pedri's voice as they all made a circle around me, assuring me by telling me that they took the persons who made that and a medical team was coming

I opened my mouth and the only word I could let out was his name. They looked at each other

"He's dealing with the guys who put you in there"

A tear fell from my eye, not because Pablo wasn't there but because I was in pain. My arm was hurting me so bad and I had a headache.

After some minutes, a medical team arrived and helped me.

I was now sitting on my bed, my forehead was opened and my arm broken but at least I'm recovering.

I felt so damn weak, I didn't remember anything at all and I couldn't talk even though I did once.

I suddenly received a text

"Get ready and meet me at the beach by 9."

Pablo! I left him on seen and prepared myself, at least what I could do with one arm working.

I arrived at the beach (just imagine a quick outfit, makeup and hairstyle bc I'm too tired to put one lol) and spotted Pablo sitting on the sand watching the water.

I went next to him and sat next to him which made Pablo's head turn to face me.

"Hola"

I quickly waved before getting back to the sea, I don't know if I liked to do that before but this is so relaxing.

"I wanted to talk to you about two things." he started "first of all, the 3 guys that hurt you were arrested, we're waiting for the verdict but you don't have to worry about them" I smiled, happy to know that these hoes were in trouble "And.. there's something that I need to tell you." he seemed nervous

"Look Bella, I'm so sorry for getting mad at you at the restaurant, I was so stressed and didn't realize how much my words could impact. I'm so sorry, I truly apologize." he looked at me straight in the eyes which made my heart skip a beat "I don't care if you won't be able to talk for the rest of your life, I can live with that. I don't care if you don't remember anything, I'll help you build so many good memories. What I'm trying to tell you Bella, is that I think I'm falling in love with you." he said marking some pauses.

I was so shocked, I didn't knew what to say, or at least to do. Tears soon fell down my cheeks, it was happy tears because he's so precious.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, hiding my face on his shoulder as he wrapped his arms around my waist, holding me close.

He then grabbed my chin and pulled our faces close enough to feel his hot breath on my lips

"Can I?" he whispered, I nodded and he gently put his lips on mine

It was soft, not sexual or anything.

Just like a dream.

That's when I felt a strange feeling on my stomach which went up to my brain and everything went back.

Me meeting Pablo, my mother making me food when I got home from school, the night I went to Pablo's first "big" match but ended up crashing with a truck.

Everything went back to me like a flash.

Pablo felt that I was weird and pulled out, looking at me with worried face as I was paralyzed with my eyes wide open.

"Pablo, I remember now." I surprisingly said

He looked at me with wide eyes, realizing that I just spoke

"I remember! I remember everything!" I yelled, hardly getting up with one arm and running around the beach, repeating these 2 words again and again.

Pablo ran towards me and picked me up, making me spin around.

I'm so happy!

He put me down and looked at me

"So you remember everything?" he asked with a smirk

"Yea?"

"Don't you have one specific memory that I might have hid from you?"

I tried to see what he talked about before getting it.

"Oh Pablo! How could I forget?" I said laughing

"Well I cannot blame you" he laughed too

Today is our 15 years anniversary, 15 years since we know each other and 3 years ago, we were there, sharing for both of us, our first kiss.

I cupped his face with my only hand and kissed him deeply, having to get on my tiptoes. He kissed me back and I could feel his smile against my lips, making me do the same.

What a wonderful night!

The world stopped, it was now just me and him and I absolutely loved it

So one of many parts of me explaining my sims HC's of how the sims universe is

Part One The Timeline

So Sims 3 is messy in the timeline because different worlds take place at different times so that will be noted when needed

The Sims 4 is similar in difficulty but also different because" it's an AU" so the Sims 4 is taken lightly on the timeline with parts that will be built upon later in explanation posts

the baseline of years are also based of the constant characters of the goths and the fact that sims 2 came out in 2004

-Sims 3 Twinbrook- between 1900-1910(The Curious brothers grandfather was a toddler)

-The Sims 3-Late 1950s-Early 60s

-Sims 3 Monte Vista, Roaring Heights -Late 60s-early 70s(The Montys and Capps are still young and growing a there families)

-Sims 3 Midnight Hollow, Lucky Palms, Moonlight falls-Mid 70s-early 80s(The Summerdreams are young adults, The Dreamers are young adults, Nervous Subject is a toddler)

-Sims 3 Aurora Skies -Some time during the early 80s (The Beaker siblings are alive and Loki is a child)

-The Sims 1- the late 80s-early 90s(The goths are adults and Cassy is a young child with out her brother Alex)

-Sims 3 Sunlit Tide-between 1986-1988( I know this is really specific but if the pleasant twins are between 14-16 in 2004 they had to be born between 1988-1990 and Mary-Sue and Daniel are on their honeymoon in Sunlit Tide. This also takes into account the theory that if The Sims 1 had a teen life stage Daniel would have been a teenager.)

-The sims 4 Horse Ranch and Cottage Living-Mid 90s-Late 90s (I put these two together earlier than The Sims 4 because Mortimer's aunt Agnus and her "Dead Husband" are elders)

-Sims 3 Dragon Valley-Mid 90s(John and Jennifer Burb are unmarried and Lucy isn't born yet)

-The Sims 2- 2004-05 (This is the baseline year with Bella being abducted in the Summer of 04 and then I am guessing the events of The Sims 2 take place between Summer 04 and then Summer 05 given the handful of pregnancies we know of and the fact that Seasons start in the winter with the exception of the Greenman who start the next spring)

-The Sims 4- the 2010s-Present ( Look at the game and tell me you don't think it takes place in the 2010s it might just be the fault of the game being stuck in 2014 in style)

-Sims 3 Lunar Lake- 2020s ( I just feel like its the vibe of Lunar Lakes plus if Mathilde Goth is the third goth child that would have had to be born after Belles abduction in the 2000s she would be a young adult now pretty much )

-Sims 3 into the future-"New World Hundreds of Years into the Future" (this is a direct quote from the back of the Disc)

Parts I want to but somewhere else on the timeline but I am not sure where I would

The Sims 4: My Wedding Stories- In My Wedding Stories Arnessa Thebe talks about how she misses her Aunt Queen and Uncle Eetion. And how her and her dad{Queen's Brother} would visit them time to time when she was a kid. So this just creates a wired gap I have yet to figure out yet.

Princess Cordelia Thebe- So still being on my Thebes issue. In the sims 4 in text it suggest that Princess Cordelia lived at least 100 or so before the events of the sims 4. But Arnessa is referred to as her Descendant which to me suggests more than 5 generations But I think that maybe Arnessa is like her great-great granddaughter. because in 100 year you don't really get decedents you get great-great grandkids. Maybe Cordelia never got to meet if she was older and had a kid or two.

If you read this whole thing WOW. If your wondering what I am on to come up with this much of a sims everything timeline my answer is hyperfixation and Cherry Slush Alani. I think its wild this is just my like baseline timeline to without any like actual headcanons besides estimated ages.
