14x20 Ending = Two Main Protagonists Confirmed

Was rewatching 14x20 for reasons and this scene stuck out to me again like it always does:

Here, we see Dean taking the Equalizer gun (still a stupid name, sorry not sorry) to kill Jack after Chuck presents the suggestion as only he can. In the end, Dean doesn't shoot Jack, he and Sam confront Chuck, they learn he's the ultimate bad guy, and he basically sets them up for the ultimate apocalypse. One last ride.

And here's where we see the setup for the two main protagonists/heroes...because they have been the main two protagonists/heroes for a while. Dean and Sam = yin and yang.

Dean is the one taking the shot at Jack/willing to sacrifice himself; Sam is the one Chuck mostly interacts with & he figures out what Chuck is really doing

Chuck mentions the whole "father and son" thing when it comes to Dean and Jack; Sam calls Chuck out on what he's really doing

Dean tells Chuck to go to Hell & Chuck kills Jack; Sam shoots Chuck & Chuck starts the apocalypse

Dean makes the choice not to shoot Jack; Sam makes the choice to shoot Chuck

Dean was willing to sacrifice himself to shoot Jack who they think is the villain and save the world from him; Sam was willing to sacrifice himself to shoot Chuck who is the real villain to save Jack

Yin and yang.

If there was only one main protagonist, that one brother would have been the one to choose to shoot Jack & sacrifice himself, Chuck would have had his focus on & the most interactions with, would've been the sole father in that dynamic with Jack (minus Cas), would have been the catalyst for Chuck killing Jack and starting the apocalypse, and would have been the one to choose to shoot Chuck & sacrifice himself. The other brother would have just been a bystander if that was the case.

Another way you can tell that there are two main protagonists is that they knocked Cas out (literally and both times) of these important scenes with the two Gods (Chuck and Jack who will replace him) and the brothers despite his being an angel, despite his relationship with Jack, even despite his relationship with both brothers and the family they've all settled into. He has some lines, sure, but notice how he is not able to be involved in the decision making or really active in the standoff with Chuck. Not to diminish Cas and his importance to the story or to Jack or even Sam and Dean, but here we see that he is clearly not the main protagonist of the story. Same with Jack even though he becomes the new God in the next season, and they pulled the ol' switcheroo in this episode between him and Chuck. They literally played the shell game with the audience by having Chuck show up the way he did so it could all lead up to this moment: the Winchester brothers telling Chuck to eff off and the resulting final conflict (they're not only fighting for their freedom and to reclaim their narrative/lives but also the final boss) that will eventually reach the climax and final standoff. So of course there would be no Mary, no Bobby, no John, no Jody, no Donna, no Claire, etc in this scene and Cas would be sidelined.

It was always about Sam and Dean.

Jensen being as - if not more - insane about Dean than us. Jensen joining us on the Dean's happy ending isn't dying, and he's not really dead train because that was bullshit. His sexy silence era. The clown show that was the final episode. Deancas Valentines Day wedding, which we all celebrated. The Cw going bust and dying on a Thursday. The fact Cas canonically died on a Thursday. The insane details in the confession itself; the handprint, the parallels to the end of season 4 aka where Cas broke free from the narrative and made the story up as he went even though he wasn't supposed to be in this story. Still beautiful, still Dean Winchester. All the script leaks. All the things that still don't make sense a la why was Jensen heard screaming Cas' names while filming 15x19. The deleted scenes of 15x19 ("Where's castiel? I'm sorry. He was a good soldier " and the absolute devastion in Dean's eyes stop -). The gapping plotholes that were never even attempted to be fixed. There's been all that and so much more. Chuck only knows what will come next (and oh yeah, Rob Benedict is on team chuck actually won, for the finale theorists) but there's no peace with this hell show (both affectionately and derogatory) so we all know it's not done yet.

So this is a pretty generic post-15x19, Cas-is-back-from-the-Empty fic. The setup is a lot like "Status quo ante bellum", in that Dean is still working towards fully expressing his feelings towards Cas, and Cas isn't sure where he stands. But Dean is being pretty clearly clingy, so Cas doesn't have the intense anxiety that he does in "Status quo". They go on the clown-mask-vampire hunt, Dean gets impaled, but Cas is there to heal him. But because Dean was so badly injured, it takes a lot out of Cas, and he passes out. Sam and Dean take Cas back to the motel and get him a room, and Dean stays with him overnight. The excerpt picks up the next morning. It's mostly just dialogue.

Cas wakes up first. Frozen, kind of terrified. 

Dean is snuggled into him by now. 

Dean wakes up. Jerks away in shock but recovers quickly.

Cas looks at him nervously.

Dean smiles bashfully, "Hope I didn’t wake you up?"

C: "No you didn’t"

D: "Good. How’re you doing? Anything screwed up?"

C: "No, I’m better."

D: Sighs, relieved. "I was scared."

C: Raises his eyebrows. "You were scared for me?"

D: "‘Course."

C: "Dean, you could’ve died." 

D: "Yeah that scared me too."

C: "Yeah. Me too."

D: "But… if I died… you’d come see me, right? Sneak into my memory box, wake me up? And we could just… hang out on the holodeck?"

C: "It’s a poor substitute for life."

D: "But you’d do it?"

C: (softly) "Yeah."

D: "Good. Y’know, I think… I mean… I wanna spend forever with you."

Cas stares, entirely disarmed. 

Dean’s eyes fall to his lips. 

He leans in. Cas is very still, and closes his eyes. Dean kisses him very softly.

Cas’ eyes are still closed when he pulls away.

Cas opens his eyes. Looks unsettled.

So Dean kisses him again. This time something clicks with Cas and he starts to kiss him back.

2. Timestamp

This is the scene from "Forget your perfect offering" in chapter 4 where Claire goes off to talk to Dean in the kitchen. I wrote the dialogue when I wrote the chapter, so that I would have a clear idea of what was happening with Dean, even though I never intended to post it with the fic. I'm actually pretty sure that I posted it on tumblr at some point, but I can't find it now.

The setup is that Dean is trying to give Cas what he wants so that he'll stay. And Jody, Kaia and Claire come over for a family dinner. And Dean basically tells Claire not to screw it up with her attitude. But he apologizes later, and that's when this scene takes place. Under the cut.

Dean feels bad for telling Claire not to be a weirdo, and asks her to help him with dessert so they can talk in the kitchen.

Dean: Sorry for being, y’know…

Claire: An asshole?

D: Yeah. I guess this whole thing’s got me on-edge.

C: What whole thing?

D: Y’know. Being with Cas. It’s a mindfuck. I mean, you get it, right?

C: Get what?

D: You know…

Claire stares at him.

D: Suddenly being different from how you thought you were.

Claire keeps staring at him.

D: Oh, come on. Your dad was all into Jesus. He didn’t raise you to think being gay was normal. Don’t you ever get hung up on what he’d think if he saw you today?

C: (getting agitated) No, I don’t, because he’s dead. And I had an angel in me, so I know that none of that shit matters.

D: Yeah, but when you started being into girls, you’re saying you didn’t ever worry what other people would think?

C: What the hell, I’m not your therapist, Dean!

D: Yeah. Right. Sorry.

C: (softening, just a little) I get that you need someone to talk to about this crap. But did you think that maybe that someone should be your boyfriend?

D: Talk to Cas? The dude spent eternity as, like, a giant lightbulb or something. I don’t think he knows what it’s like for everyone he knows to suddenly see him as some… some kinda… ugh.

Dean cuts into the rice krispie squares. Claire regards him cooly. The way Dean said "some kinda" gets under her skin.

Claire leans over the counter, and says to Dean in a low, icy voice.

C: Faggot.

Dean freezes and stares at Claire like she just slapped him.

D: What?

C: That’s what you were gonna say, right? That's what you are now.

Dean looks at Claire like he’s about to cry.

C: And you can wear your plaid, and carry a gun and talk like Batman, but that won't change the fact that that's all you are to some people. They'll see you and Cas together and that'll be it, they'll never see you as anything but dirty and wrong and weak. And I dunno, maybe your dad would've been one of them. But you gotta decide whether or not you're going to let them control your life. You gotta decide whether all that bullshit is worth it.

Claire takes the knife from Dean and goes back to cutting the rice krispie squares.

D: (after a long beat) Yeah. Yeah, Cas is worth it.

C: (significant look) I don't mean Cas. I mean being yourself.

D: (some kind of subtexutal reminder that Dean still thinks he's not really in love with Cas) Heh. Yeah. Thanks Claire.

C: Whatever. Don't start thinking I'm your gay Yoda.

D: It’ll be hard. You give good advice. For a dyke.

C: (good natured) Pansy.

D: Queer.

C: Cocksucker.

D: Nah, that’s not till later tonight.

C: Ew!

D: What, you don’t wanna hear about my plans for Cas’ cock?

All That’s Left is Hurt

After defeating Chuck, Dean expects that Jack, who is now the new God, will be able to bring back Cas, but unfortunately, Jack can’t. The entity of the Empty has managed to hide Cas from Jack, and all he can do, is wait for the entity of the Empty to make a mistake and release its grip on Castiel, which might take at least a century.

Dean, shattered by the fact that he is going to have to live his life without Cas, mourning him for the rest of his days, drowns himself into the unforgiving and painful sea of grief. And as much as he wants to give up on life, he forces to keep going, because he doesn’t want Cas’ sacrifice to be for nothing, even if the simple act of breathing hurts.

Unable to stay in the bunker anymore, haunted by the many memories he shared with Cas, Dean leaves the bunker and ends up buying a house near a lake. The house needs a lot of restoration, but Dean decides to work on it, hoping that if Cas is ever brought back from the Empty, he will have a nice home to come back to, even if Dean is no longer alive.

I didn't complete my (self-appointed) assignment for Destiel Day, which was to compile a complete list of every time Destiel went canon (thus breaking one of the Sixty-Six Seals: when they all fall, the pale coconuts will collide), with nice gifs. To me, Destiel is "canonized" by persons/entities who officially create and distribute the show: producers, writers, actors, directors, other crew, translators, and networks.

clearly 15x20, dean's speech but the whole episode. this really works for my queerplatonic reading of wincest in that it's the first time really in the whole of canon that they both acknowledge the full scope of the fact that actually they are really everything to each other. idk if that makes sense but it's like, before 15x19 they're always driven together by the latest Big Bad, there is some nebulous possible future they're entertaining (or at least sam is entertaining) where they might be with someone else. but at this point they could have gone off and settled down with other people but they've chosen not to because they are getting what they need from each other. like that whole domestic montage. they're happy. this works for them. so dean's speech is like… acknowledging that if he hadn't died they'd basically have been life partners and they are both okay with that. idk it makes me very happy as someone in a qpr

mulled over this one for a while, other top contender was lebanon and dean being like to john, 'i have a family', but it's too similar to number 4. instead i go the other way and pick WENDIGO and that bit in the abandoned mine where they look at each other lit by firelight and they have that glint in their eyes and you think, yeah they gonna be boning later for sure

The most curious thing to me about this ep has been Jenny’s motivation—  Kate seeking revenge for her mate makes sense to me; Jenny, who was a  victim and turned against her will, who the Winchesters tried to save, being the one to indirectly cause Dean’s death seems like an empty callback to me — and a uncharacteristically pessimistic take on the monstrosity of these ‘infected’ victims.

A few ideas...

1) Imo the most likely, if boring, explanation is that the writers couldn’t or didn’t want to get Kate’s actress back (it does look like her acting career slowed down somewhat in the mid-2010s? according to IMDB, the last movie she did was in 2017 and then a short film in 2021. plus, the pandemic might’ve also messed with her availability) but still wanted to reference 1x20, so they went with Jenny and her actress instead (esp as she’d been on the show again in S5).

2) I also watched “The End of the Road,” the short documentary on the final ep/the end of the series out of curiosity, and:

[4:21 - 5:50] BUCKNER [I think?] The myth of what these brothers were, throughout 15 years, we didn’t shy away from fatalism, but we wanted to be able to have it be kind of uplifting as well. DABB If you’re going to do something that feel like a complete arc, you have to kind of go back to the beginning of it. [VOICEOVER of 1x20 / DEAN: Vampires nest in groups of 8 to 10. Smaller packs are sent out to hunt for food. VOICEOVER from 15x20 / SAM: Well, if this is the same nest and if the pattern holds, then they'll target Canton next. DEAN: They target families that are living outside of town, that are isolated... Jenny?... So, what, are you, like, the, uh... The big boss or something? JENNY: No. I just called dibs.] When it comes to Sam and Dean, and particularly this last episode, it’s all about getting back to in some ways these two guys on the road, in this car, they’ve been doing this job for 15 years now, they’ve fought everyone from demons to vampires to God himself, but at the end of the day they’re still working guys. Out there on the road, taking cases, and we tried to never lose sight of that. [6:11 - 6:31] ROSS-LEMMING I think we sort of knew, generally, what the ending would involved, we might not have known the mechanics, but we sort of knew that there would be a glorious, victorious, sacrificial ending, because I think sacrifice is a big theme in our series, and for every great thing you do a cost must be paid.

given the emphasis on going back to the beginning, returning to where Sam & Dean started, and the writers believing a bit in fatalism, all of that fits with the writers not being particularly perturbed by bringing Jenny back as a doomed victim. it fits with Dean’s death, too, in how Dean wasn’t able to escape a hunter’s demise & how Ross-Lemming frames it as a sacrifice for Sam and his carrying on.

the writing went back and forth on the monstrosity or not of certain victims, but I’m not sure it ever fully settled on a definite answer on whether victims turned against their will are / aren’t monsters. Ross-Lemming (who’s married to director/executive producer Singer) and Buckner in particular seem to have brought a fatalism/fatedness to the writing room / show. they’re the ones who described 9x16, when the Mark is finally activated in Dean, as demonstrating him as innately a warrior and killer, that it was in his DNA, which is pretty Fucked Up.

3) in the story proper, I could also buy Jenny as being a counterpoint to Dean and Sam: she was a killer who thirsted for revenge, in contrast to Dean and Sam giving up on revenge, to being “killers.” I could even see Jenny as a foil specifically for Dean, given how he’s framed as the “ultimate killer” in 15x19, and how much of his story in Dabb era has him (framed as wrongly) wanting and chasing after revenge. Jenny ends up his dark mirror, the bloodthirsty killer Dean could have turned into if not for Sam, Cas and his friends puling him back into the light. not that I like/agree w/ this framing, but there’s a line in a S14 commentary from one of the writers that basically describes Dean exactly that way: that Sam & Cas pull Dean back from his self-destructive tendencies. (I had a side-tangent here abt Dean & Jenny as dual victims of sexual assault in 1x20, and what one could read into that in 15x20, but frankly I don’t think that subtext was intended and it’s also incredibly messed up if you read into it at all.)

...so that’s a lot of words to say I agree w/ you that the Jenny callback is kind of hollow & bleak, ha.

just remembered that the diner scene is the first time we actually see michael and adam talk to each other and feeling a bit insane. That was their first on-screen interaction not counting adam seeing michael in 05x18 

The first thing we see with them interacting is their date. midam truly reigns supreme

My brain is once again melting over midam. I just keep thinking about how pointless to the plot they were in s15. Like the help michael gave in 15x08 was ultimately not used to defeat chuck. How did michael actually impact the plot in 15x19?? 

There was no need to bring them back. There was no need to bring them back so married. I have said it once before but I think that if the writers had just brought back Michael and been like “yeah adam died in the cage” I would have believed it easily of the michael we saw in s5.

Covert communication in the Dean/Cas relationship

Somewhere around season 12, Castiel, having picked up on Dean's communication style, wondered aloud, "Are we still talking about the same thing?" (12x02 Mamma Mia)

However, they've used covert language with each other as far back as season 4's "We're done," and season 5's "Maybe they're moving on from you, Dean."

Something niggles my brain about this scene in 15x19, as they icily speak to other for the first time in months, perhaps the first extended conversation since their trial separation:

When Dean says, "Maybe you went too far," it could be "I went too far," or it could simply be, "You said things that pulled me in too deeply, that we're still devoted and REAL in the midst of all this."

When Dean says: "Guy's been in lockdown so long, maybe you went too fast?" is it more than what appears? Could it be he's implying that he himself has been in emotional lockdown for most of his life...or perhaps the fallout from AU Michael ( a potentially greivous psychological injury & the contagion of nihilism)?

And when he says: "maybe you went too fast," could he mean "you left too fast." Or maybe it could mean, "you're going too fast for ME in general. Give me time to process my grief. Or, when you told me we were real, I was overwhelmed."

And what of Castiel's, "He was very distraught." Castiel himself was distraught? DEAN was distraught? Both? Likely, Dean. In the script, Cas noted that Dean was "irrational" and distraught in "Game Night." It's a little uncharitable of Cas, given the seriousness of the situation.

Dean's poking, "What exactly did he SAY" certainly means "what did you get from my meltdown? What did you HEAR? What was my anger saying to you? What came across?"

And Cas answers: "You want me gone and dead, Dean. We didn't bond / yours and my bond is broken now."
