Roronoa Zoro x Reader
Look, I gotta be honest, I've never actually watched One Piece outside of the episodes that would air on Toonami back in the day, and I only really cared enough about it because my brother-in-law and my irl best friend both LOVE One Piece... and now my older brother is getting into One Piece too... but like I said in a previous post, I caved and ended up watching the One Piece Live Action (though I guess it didn't help that seeing Taryn cosplay as Zoro kinda reawakened my crush on ZoloZoro as a 4kids)... and I'm also sick right now and I have nothing better to do than write some Zoro boyfriend headcanons apparently. Aside from watching the OPLA, I did do my research on Zoro.. research being reading his page on the OP Wiki 😂😂
Okay, I'm rambling too much and this is still the introduction asdfghjkl
EDIT: Added the links lmao
~ Masterlist ~
Tumblr media
The way Mackenyu said that he looked at his wife and knew that he wanted to marry her (supposedly, I couldn't find any concrete sources for this save for a YouTube video using TTS... but hey, it fed my imagination for this), I felt that so much for Zoro.
Of course, it doesn't happen overnight for Zoro. It takes a while, maybe even years, for him to look at you and be like, "I wouldn't mind settling down with you if possible." Oh boy, but when it does happen, he becomes very perceptive of you.
Just like his training, he takes his relationship with you very seriously, and even if he doesn't act on his feelings for you straight away--because one, he has a strong sense of duty to Luffy first, and two, you'd be his first and maybe only romantic partner ever--he'd still reserve a certain amount of softness and gentleness to you when not in the presence of others.
Let's go back to Zoro's perceptiveness really quickly. Yes, my man can be a dumbass at the best and worst of times and we all love that about him, but when it comes down to what's important, he knows how to analyze and read the situation. So, because he views you as someone important and someone he should take seriously, he's going to personally be making sure that you're okay, mentally, emotionally, and physically. He's that dedicated to you.
There will be times where his loyalty to Luffy might have to take center stage in the relationship, especially if its during a critical juncture, rest assured that he will do his best to make it up to you afterwards. He doesn't voice it often because of his strong loyalty to Luffy, but there are brief times in which he wishes that he could just spend time with you.
Now, Zoro isn't one for PDA, he gets very embarrassed by it because showing affection in public isn't something that he's comfortable with doing, but, get him out of public and into private, that man is on you, no question. The most affection he's comfortable with showing in public is you two taking a nap together, or even sharing a bottle together (which is very hard to get him to do, the man loves his alcohol, so congrats if you manage it).
As an official romantic partner, he's actually very sweet. Yes, he can come off as very blunt and cold sometimes, but he's just being honest with you. To him, its more important to be truthful than to sugarcoat things. For you, however, he's working on saying things more gently if in the case you get hurt by his initial blunt tendencies. Past that, however, he tends to you with the same care he tends to his swords. He sees a fruit or snack that you adore in the markets when he's helplessly lost? He'll absolutely buy it for you. Finds an item you've been wanting for a while? Don't worry, he's already paying for it. He finds out that you maybe feel a bit homesick? He'll begrudgingly ask Sanji to cook one of your favorite hometown dishes. He sees that you're feeling down on yourself? He's there to either quietly lend an ear or his presence, whichever you need. My man is an attentive boyfriend.
Also also, Zoro is a man of few words, so don't expect to hear him say, "I love you," very often, but that's okay. He's a man of few words, but his actions speak so much for him. You can feel him say those words in the way he kisses you thoughtfully, in the way he holds you so securely to him when you two nap or sleep together, in the way he dutifully monitors your alcohol intake (if you drink alcohol of course), in the way he tends to you carefully if you get hurt in a fight. To him, words are useless and actions mean so much more.
In other words, Zoro would make the best boyfriend in his special own way.

really really long post where i just talk about johan from yugioh gx thank you
im thinking about johan tonight bc i was drawing him and i wanna talk abt him. bear with me. I REALLY LIKE JOHAN . TO START THIS OFF WITH i have an official licensed johan "WHERE AM I" shirt and i adore it its really funny also i used to have like a johan pin i bought from a german anime store and it was like 8 euros but i shipped it off to my friend who is really really crazy about johan
Tumblr media
^johan where am i shirt
anyway johan. jessejohan. i like johan so much believe me he is my nordic scandinavian brethen i just think his writing has issues mainly that he has like no real relationships outside judai and like. i know as a gay person -- i am literally a lesbian In A Lesbian Relationship In Real Life -- that characters will become more likeable when they're queer coded bcuz its Different and its relatable. however i think his writing is kind of really weak and i quote this thing my friend said in 2022 like a lot
Tumblr media
HARD TRUTHS TO SWALLOW jesse is a beautiful damsel in distress and his personality outside jaden and crystal beasts is kind of nothing. i love him tho
but the most offensive thing abt it writing wise is like in season 4 when they duel against trueman sorry it was fujiwara. okay i was rewatching gx ages ago and my ex was watching it with me and it was her first time seeing it and shes a literature major and when the whole. "what is the darkness in johan's heart" scene, AFTER IT WAS ESTABLISHED EVERYONE, EVERY STUDENT INCLUDING MANJOUME SHO ASUKA O'BRIEN ETCETC has darkness in their hearts,
my ex goes "if they reveal that he has no darkness in his heart because hes such a special boy im going to be so fucking mad because hes already a mary sue" (HER WORDS NOT MINE she was so mad about johan its funny.) AND THEN THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY DO
like he is literally too perfect. his only flaw is his one (1) time thing about getting lost which is never really brought up again (also its more of an endearing haha funny thing and yes i like it i have a shirt referencing that scene.) and the fact that.. he gets taken over i guess.
i do think the switch around where they bamboozle fujiwara is really funny. it is a funny scene i just wish they literally didn't do it at the cost of "johan is a perfect person without any mental weaknesses when literally every single other character has some flaws" I DONT GET IT!!!
maybe he can just photosynthesize his worries into strength i dont know. does anyone remember that meme
Tumblr media
but really like WHAT IS JOHAN WITHOUT JUDAI!!!! why is he literally perfect and above other characters also. why could they not give him any darkness like What possible reason does that serve except me think he is BORING!!!! i do like johan btw as i said i really do. i just think his writing kinda sucks and people are way too nice on johan because he is queer coded but the fact is his writing is really weak. this isnt exclusive to johan ok i also dislike some aspects of jadens writing and asukas and so forth (naming characters i really like to prove my point) I AM CRITICAL this is just. about johan. ok.
and this brings me to the weirdo youtube essayists who only care about s3 and think its the peak of gx and yugioh in general and also. ONE SUCH YOUTUBER. WHO SAID IT IS "HOMOPHOBIC" THAT JESSE IS SOUTHERN IN THE DUB WHICH. WHAT?
you think all southern people all homophobic??? im sorry but i know so many goddamn queer people in thhe south. are you out of your mind. please blow up. LET HIM BE A GAY TEXAN you are just showing your own prejudice literally why did so many gx fans eat up "umm it was homophobic of 4kids to make him southern" they give like everyone accents. he has cowboy boots in his design. its not homophobia hes just southern and southern gay people exist. watch brokeback mountain or something
anway
i think johan is a much more interesting character if you incorporate his manga counterpart into it. like combine him with his anime self and it'd be really fun. his bug enthusiasm in the manga is fun like he has an actual hobby and personality. ADHD bug king
Tumblr media
also i think personally they should lean into him being scandinavian more. ITS FUNNY. i think he should try to feed manjoume blodplättar because he looks anemic. he should open a can of surströmming around asuka (canonically very much hates food with strong smells) and she gets so upset she has to like leave the building entirely. she should get into a cultural dispute with o'brien because he thinks carola's swedish cover of mickey is better than toni basil's original
youtube
i think this and like. septembers mikrofonkåt is what he should listen to. swedish pop baby
anyway. i like johan i just think Some of his fans are insane and thats why i need to take him down a peg every now and then . in a loving bully way. also hes very gender to me dont worry about it. also TWO different people have said some variation of the "fuck danganronpa and its fans i hope komaeda marries a woman" post about him to me in different years which is so funny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway yes i love jessejohan. send post

every day i see people very adamantly like "the dub RUINED [x yugioh element/scene/whatever]" and, well, im going to be completely real with you chief: i do honestly think one of my biggest and boldest ygo 'hot takes' is "dude, what? the dubs dont Ruin anything, at least not to the scale people act like they do; they just take a different approach to the story/characters, and sometimes that doesn't always work the best or a way you personally would like."
There are PLENTY of issues with the dubs to discuss but acting like they came in and purposefully ruined everything and completely eclipse the original version is just. so bizarre to me. idk. i really dont think that's what the yugioh dubs were setting out to do lol. the sub still exists, untouched, you can go watch it at any time. honestly how is it not an amazing world we get to live in, effectively getting TWO yugiohs telling the story in two different ways, and getting to see and compare the two? even when the dub Does in fact take an arguably shittier direction with a character (chumley did get completely hosed by 4kids like. oh my god.) i do think there's still value in critically analyzing those choices and trying to wrap your head around Why they did that (mid 2000s fatphobia in western media, in this case, is definitely at play on this one. 😐😑) rather than immediately throwing down a scorched earth "they ruined it!"... and then dragging that into the living room of whatever person is having a good faith discussion about the yugioh dubs. 🤷‍♀️

They removed armbands, a hair pick and unlewded some questionable art with strategic usage of tentacles. The creators made an artistic decision to alter work they created. Censorship is a slippery slope sure but no, there's no grandstanding about being one of the good ones here unfortunately. You can see the censored changes yourself on youtube, it's really not that bad. I promise.
First, you're putting forward that because the censorship is minor, it shouldn't be stood against. That's not a good enough argument. If it was enough to change, it is enough to stand against changing it.
Second, the creators are gone. The people responsible for the art direction and key art design are gone. Simply owning the product does not free you from criticisms when you make changes. If this were the case, we couldn't criticize Disney for cutting LGBT stuff from their movies.
Third, they changed concept art. Concept art is supposed to be an unaltered snapshot into the design process. Going into the concept art and editing it stops it from being concept art.
Worse, changing concept art to match your current changes is flat out revisionism. It is attempting to erase evidence that there was a different design at all, ever.
Fourth, you didn't touch on the fact that they were removing stretch goals. An entire announcer, which was a stretch goal, has been removed from the game.
I do not care how small the change was. Appealing to triviality is just you making excuses for censorship. Because, eventually, the changes will not be small. Or the 'small changes' will be put into your favorite thing.
After all, how big of a deal was it that Sanji's cigarette be turned into a lolipop, right? Why are you complaining about something as silly as a lolipop? 4kids owned the western rights to One Piece, after all.

okay so i just steamrolled thru detective pikachu returns over the past 2 days because i was sick and had nothing else better to do and right after finishing it i went into the tags and WOWIE the negative reception is very large!! i do understand and even agree with some of it but i just felt the need to get my own thoughts down (again. sick with nothing better to do) so take a peek under readmore for very typical elongated halo ramblings about his fave video game series
for the record i never played the first game (only watched a few clips of it on youtube even) but i did go see the movie in theaters. just figured i'd mention this ahead of time so my favoritism is known and to prevent myself from coming off as a perfectly unbiased reviewer
BEWARE THE SPOILERS BTW
(post-editing note: it be long under here, you have been warned)
to start off YEAG this game is not worth 50 bucks! the story's pacing is all over the place and is very basic, the graphics are not particularly well refined, the characters' expressions do not fluctuate as much as they should (professor gordon in particular ;-; i felt so bad for him), and the voice acting outside of merloch and detective pikachu himself are kinda phoned in! it felt like an early 2000s 4kids dub for real. even the gameplay aspects themselves were rather meh in presentation; the button hitboxes were annoying to deal with and as cool as i thought the "main" mechanics were they were incredibly clunky and the tension they tried to build up in the "solving the case" climaxes was just Not It. there was absolutely no reason for the loading/pauses to take that long
(the pokemon gimmicks were okay tho. i would die for growlithe)
however, this isn't a problem specific to this game. while i enjoyed scarlet it was definitely not 60 bucks material (and when i went back to it for the teal mask i even went "good lord, did it always run this badly?"). i gotta give credit to detective pikachu, at least this game ran properly for the most part and never crashed on me lmao
while that doesn't negate the criticisms i previously mentioned i simply wanted to say that this is going to be a problem for as long as pokemon keeps making money. this isn't me finger-wagging at anyone in particular (i certainly have no room to talk, i did say i liked scarlet), i just wanted to say: yeah, pokemon has been A Mess
"but halo!" you cry. "you talked like the negative reception was overblown! what gives the giant negative paragraph??"
because much like scarlet, i still really enjoyed this game sdfjnsdk. how can i say that with confidence, though, when i largely agree that there were many, many issues to be had with its performance?
the word of the day: expectations
and perhaps this is where my bias comes into it. whenever i play a spinoff game (like snap or pokepark for instance), i don't really go into it for mindblowing gameplay and stories, i do it for the same reason this series has kept me enraptured for over a decade of my life:
the pokemon themselves!!
there are SO MANY little things that the regular games don't go into, and while i have my own headcanons and OCs i can play off of, it is so much fun to see actual canon material acknowledge certain things you've only ever theorized about!!
the whimsicott were so fun to watch float around, the article asking where a furret's tail began and ended made me laugh out loud, the fact that they went hard into the "slowpoke tails are eaten as food" thing, and the "let's not get into that right now" jokes about venonat hunting other pokemon and dusknoir eating souls LIKE. i LOVE when pokemon goes into its more "serious" aspects. i know main series games do it too occasionally but outside of offhanded mentions or pokedex entries, do they go this hard into them? if they do and i'm just stupid pls tell me about it i'll eat that shit up
being reminded of less-talked-about pokemon is always a plus and how can you not pop off when you see one of your faves included in the story? (INTELEON AND WOOPER I'LL KICK THEIR ASSES 4 U) it's simply fun immersing yourself into the world of pokemon and getting a glimpse of what it would be like to have pokemon walking down the street and how that affects everyday life! maybe the story is basic, but it served its purpose and i had fun going along with it!
perhaps it's just my mental illness talking, but walking around and seeing all the pokemon and THEN doing the quiz girl's quizzes was actually kinda nice! even if the puzzles weren't that hard, i can't lie and say i didn't pump my fist when i guessed where the mystery was going like with cramorant swallowing the jewel or how the passimian statues needed to hold different berries. overall, i just enjoyed being reminded of how much i know and what i love about this series
also, the ways they incorporated the movie were pretty baller. i liked how they didn't just do a repeat of the mewtwo plot from the movie and let me tell you, even tho i called it early on, i liked that my suspicions about the aurora drop being deoxys were confirmed!! (i suppose it's not that hard to guess bcs what other pokemon comes from space, but i just recently finished playing omega ruby again and i normally don't think about deoxys a lot so LET ME HAVE THIS)
plus "i heard they made a movie about the R case" MADE ME SCREAM. i thought they were just going to ignore the movie and do their own thing but then they DID THAT. incredible. you can call my expectations low (which is valid) but holy fuck
so the TLDR for those who want this: if you want a sweet but cliche game exploring the world of pokemon with a lot of funny moments + worldbuilding, then this game is perfect for you. if you want a game with a groundbreaking story with graphics to boot, then yeah, you're not gonna find it here. i've even seen people say their own nostalgia of the original spinoff wasn't enough to get them to enjoy this game, so take my words with a grain of salt
i would say just watch compilations of the game on youtube, but not every youtuber is gonna go fully exploring the game for all of its little details, so if you care about that kind of stuff, buying the game is your best bet. also if you don't care about that kind of stuff then you should just ignore the game altogether etc etc anYwAY
as for a TLDR for the TLDR: new pokemon snap is goated and i would say a more enjoyable experience than this game esp if you didn't like it so PLEASE buy it the game's only 30 bucks and you can throw treats at pokemon PLEASE it has so many sidequests and interactions you can partake in PLEASE i prommy i won't bite PLEASE stick your fingers in my enclosure PLEASE PLEASE PLE

BurnBunny & Here's Why!! ❤️‍🔥🐇
Actually, for a while, I didn't know why I shipped Burnin and Miruko. And honestly? My ultimate reason now is because I just like to.
They're two enjoyable characters to me and I just like seeing them as a ship.
Over the months (since the end of last July) of shipping them, I have found what makes them an enjoyable ship for me and why right now they're my favorite Miruko and Burnin ship.
Now, I'm not writing this to convince anyone to ship them, I don't care if you do or don't. Because so, I honestly don't care for any disputes over any "points" I make here. If you disagree, I respectfully you just keep it to yourself.
This post is written for fun. I don't care for the "Well, I like this ship better" or anything like that.
For once, how about we remember what boundaries are and that shipping shouldn't be some high school debate? Okay? Okay then!
Onwards to what I came to love about BurnBunny!
❤️‍🔥🐇
The Characters!
It is no secret that Miruko is my #1 GODDESS of BNHA. I adore her, I think she's great and I love how both her voice actresses (Sayaka Kinoshita and Anairis Quinoñes) portray her voice in sub and dub.
I bring up voice acting because that's also something else I love about Burnin. I grew up listening to Lisa Ortiz since I watched 4Kids so hearing her as Burnin in dub did give me pleasant flashbacks to my childhood Saturday mornings. I'm also giving props to Misato Kawauchi here.
I just like both their sub and dub voices, okay?
Besides, the voices, I find both characters fun from personality to design.
They're underrated. First off, Burnin should get a lot more credit for dealing with Endeavor and the agency. Like??? I do not see a lot of other female sidekicks for him (the women in WHM were actually not from his agency). Burnin is really the only woman I see. Could you imagine being in her shoes?
And then Miruko?! Oh my gosh, don't get me started on Miruko! She has to be emotionally, mentally and physically exhausted hopping from place to place BY HERSELF.
Let me be real here, if I didn't like either of these characters, I wouldn't see the point of having a ship for them.
If I ship characters, that means I like them individually, too. I just never understood having a ship yet hating one of the characters. I just don't and never will.
Shipping them has made me appreciate them more because of just how much deep diving I have done to understand each character (more so Miruko). I explore what I can and get my mind going to come up with headcanons and theories and the like.
Potential Chemistry!
They are alike by personality and they kinda balance each other out. They can easily understand each other without having to guess and not tiptoe around problems. They can be blunt with each other.
Hear me out now.
Both Miruko and Burnin come off as characters to me as people who do love a thrill, who doesn't mind getting dirty, but at the same time does want someone to comfort them without babying them. Want someone to tell them how it is, but also is capable of being gentle and considerate.
Off rip, neither of them would hesitate to make a move. To me, Miruko would be the one to realize if she likes someone, when the time is right, she is telling that person how she feels. She would regret not doing it. Burnin, same way. She comes off as a straightforward person.
They would also understand each other. Miruko and Burnin can confide in each other because of having similar workplace experiences. They can go home to each other and talk to each other about their days of having to deal with other Heroes and saving people. They can comfort each other after some asshole criticizes them unfairly. They can treat each other to cuddles and making snacks and pillow forts because that's what they know the other needs.
The Vibes!! The Idea of Them!
Just think!! You got these two badass, gorgeous women! They could be a power couple in my eyes, have each other's backs both be it fighting villains or grocery shopping together.
Burnin can be the sun to Miruko's moon!
Just see the vision here, folks!
The idea of these two being all cute with each other?
THEY HAVE HEIGHT DIFFERENCE, BY THE WAY!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Fics!
It's just so easy to writing these two, even with how little I have to go off from canon. They haven't interacted once in canon, but for my fics?
I was able to come up with a shared backstory that just fits! They went to rival hero schools, met one time during a joint school event, became friends while also having a rivalry and stayed friends for years before deciding "Hey, we should be girlfriends".
Like I need this fandom to enjoy rare pairs and F/F ships a little bit more because oh my gosh these two!!
I visualize when I write so, just the mental image of Miruko and Burnin being all soft and sweet with each other has me! Like Miruko is at the height that Burnin can kiss her forehead, just saying.
Look, after months of writing fluff fics of them I have accepted it's what I needed in life. Remember when I mentioned how shipping them made me appreciate and understand the characters? Even with, again, little from canon?
Yeah, writing them in fics got the creativity flowing and forging a relationship that could exist while also giving each other character more individually. It feels great. They're both characters that work like empty canvas that I can add on more colors onto.
They Can Be Anything I Want!
Given that this is a rare pair, they're not very popular in this fandom. While, yeah, some may say it sucks but I also came to appreciate them being so underrated.
For one, shipping discourse. I doubt there is any discourse about Burnin and Miruko as a ship because little people think about them as a ship. I doubt I will find them in some ship war because again, they're underrated.
And the beauty is I can write them how I envision them to be and rarely I'll get someone to oppose my vision. (I haven't yet and I don't want to.)
What sometimes suck about liking a popular ship is the amount of discourse and fights you'll see around it. Be it preferences in bed or who cooks and who cleans... just arguments over every little thing.
It's like people can't have different opinions, everyone must agree on one vision for that ship. 🙄
It's tiresome, it's stupid and that's why I stay in my own little corner.
Now I have my own vision of BurnBunny I enjoy and I'm sure one or two people may not see them how I do. But no matter how much I love them as a ship, I'm not the "top shipper" for them and will dictate how others should see them, just throwing that out there.
❤️‍🔥🐇
That's really I have to say for these two? Again, not looking to start a whole group of BurnBunny shippers (that sounds like a lot of work...). Not trying to convince anyone they're the best ship or anything.
Just voicing my thoughts! Just rambling here.

It should be noted that the Pokemon 2000 line is a dub edit, too (along the lines of the original first movie dub’s ‘Pokemon shouldn’t fight, not like this.’ Why 4Kids felt the need to call attention to criticisms of the series like this is beyond me.) Originally, Misty asks why he doesn’t just use Pokeballs like one normally does and the villain says he’s a collector and collections should be on display. That’s a huge difference in the dialogue, especially since the anime makes it clear that even normal Pokemon can escape a Pokeball if they don’t want to be caught. The 2000 villain uses a method that catches them with way more force and then hurts them for ‘display’ purposes. Comparing with another legendary, Goh caught his Suicune to save it when it was in danger, nursed it back to health, and offered to release it once things were safe. He respects the Pokemon he catches in general.
Yep, exactly. Pokémon like Suicune chose to stay with him and it still roams around as it pleases and shows up when he needs it to, and he had to work to catch a Regi along with Gary

I've seen a post where OP received an ask from someone saying that they received hate accusing them of being "less of a fan" because they play only the ENG version, and OP went on a huge rant accusing ENG fans who prefer the JP version of pulling this shit. To be honest, I disagree with OP and think this is a JP speaking only fandom exclusive thing. Hell, it seems like the person who sent this ask was trying to make that point, but didn't articulate it well.
I've been in the ENG TWST fandom since Scarabia dropped on the JP servers. I've NEVER seen anyone on this side of the fandom say that ENG only players are stupid idiots that are unable to handle the "greatness" of the "true version". Not once. (To be honest, even the Japanese version has massive writing issues and is very flawed. I've lobbed criticism at it plenty of times before. But that's another topic completely.) Granted, there might be some people Twitter spouting this BS out that I'm not aware of, considering I don't have an account on there, but even I find that unlikely.
For the most part, I've seen fellow ENG speaking JP players recommend watching the fansubs over playing the official version. That's understandable thanks to the 4Kids-like censorship (erasing Azul's ED, changing the Scarabia Dou's backstory to the point Jamil seems like a completely different character, scrapping all of the instances where Jamil calls Kalim his "master" and the swearing, getting rid of all of the hints of the Asims being off-screen villains, etc) and weird writing choices. Hell, I highly recommend anyone getting into this fandom to watch the fan subs instead as well! There's a difference between recommending the original and genuinely looking down upon someone for only playing the official English one. One is being helpful while other just makes you a dick.
People have less off a right to do that in this fandom. This isn't a typical dub vs sub situation where one side has perfectly understandable reasons to pick one over the other like blindness or being neurospicy. Even I admit I prefer dubs unless they are super inaccurate like YGO or Tokyo Mew Mew. Both versions of the game are subtitled in Japanese.
That's why I suspect this is more of a thing for JP speaking only fans than anyone international. Because I've seen the Asian fan base act haughty and holier than thou about this sorta thing in other fandoms. (Looking at you Asian Persona and Danganronpa fandoms). From what I heard, the JP TWST fandom is no different.
Don't get it twisted. If you think I'm deflecting the blame, I'm not. While the ENG speaking fandom is far from being the most toxic fandom I've been a part of, if anything it's about average, it has countless issues as well. Not tagging posts correctly, the hate lobbed at content creators no matter what gender "Yuu" you create, misinformation spreading around like wildfire, stupid fandom hot takes like accusing characters like Vil of "being racist" over stupid shit, sadly usual actual racism and queerphobia that springs up in all western fandoms, etc. I just don't think this one is particular is one of them.

The Mythical "Arrogant Localizer."
Too often I find a perpetuation of this narrative, especially with A.I. set to wiz all over Anime subtitles, that translators or ADR Script Writers had it coming. That they dared to tamper with the original by "changing personalities" and "pushing agendas" so much that CR decided to axe them for the politically neutral A.I.
Here's the thing:
Whenever some weeb claims that a translator was arrogant or "couldn't listen to criticism," it's not that they're acting like they know better. It's because they do know better.
They know that Japanese words or sentences can't be translated one-to-one into English, owing to how each country that the originate from were world's apart before global travel grew in scale.
They know that context and setting matters, especially in the case of something like Fire Emblem where characters in a medivel-esque setting would likely speak not unlike Shakespeare characters.
They know that each character has a distinct voice. An honorable Samurai like Goemon is going to have a more refined sense of speaking compared to the wise-cracking Lupin or the sardonic Jigen.
They know, especially, that humor based on puns or cultural references won't always work from one language to another.
Know what they also know? That 4kids was actually not good. They grew up during the days of dubs being borderline overhauled because of a poor sense of marketing. They'd prefer to not go back to there because they actually love Anime.
Of course, a lot of them are beholdened to what their clientelle want for their title's international distribution. Thus those who's produced the Anime they're bringing over are entitled to step in and object if they so choose. There have been incidents like that but that they get rectified speaks to the level of quality control these days.
Like... Brendan Blaber's attempted changes with Love Complex were unilaterally shot down. He was an jerky freelancer who did ADR script writing and overstepped his boundaries.
And all of this are things that translators on Twitter will affirm. I get the allure of the conspiracy theory. Of trying to figure out what's really going on and that those in the industry wouldn't dare reveal their nefarious plans.
But if we're going to have any conversation about translation and what's too far for the localization process, we need to take off out tin hats to focus on what we currently have to work off of. Either that or apply for a job in translation and see things from the inside for yourself.
Furthermore, if any of these translators seem "testy" or "unable to take criticism," it's that they keep going on and on about their choices in translation and how the theory overall goes. Yet so many are too eager to paint them as the villains and won't listen to a damn word.
Frankly, they should be angry. Social Media has broken down the divide between fandom and those who work on their shows where you gotta kowtow to what the former wants or you're the bad guy. Even when you try to debunk misconceptions and misinformation, they still want their lightening rod for their ire.
So no wonder they seem like assholes. They're just done entertaining those who will never, ever, ever see them as anything other than the villain.
But even assuming that they’re everything outrage merchants have marketed them as, AI in Anime on any level isn’t a win in any sense. It’s starts with subtitles, then voice acting (and we all know how authentic those sound) and soon it’ll make its way over to Japan.
Animators dying or being hospitalized because they won’t be good little cogs for the corporate machine? A.I. ain’t asking for time off. Voice Actors complaining about salaries? AI ain’t asking for pay period.
But you know what? Let CrunchyRoll invest in this. Let them try to hoard more money… and crash n’ burn in the process. Because it’ll take a popular title being subtitled with very erroneous lines to make the webs wake up. Nothing like a few Titanics to scare the straight.

“Why do people hate glitter force and love the Pokemon anime? Or any other anime for kids dubbed? They are just about the same in terms of dubbing!”
Not really. One difference is they changed the name of the precure franchise into something dumb like glitter force. 4kids on the other hand kept things the same or at least similar to the Japanese title. Pokemon, yu gi oh and even the one piece kept their titles the same. Other dubs had something similar in the title like Tokyo mew mew was mew mew power and such. It wasn’t as drastic as precure to glitter force was or dumb (where did they even get the glitter title from? It’s like they wanted it to be super girly. Also the other titles they were going to use were also pretty bad)
Two: they basically kept the episodes the same way and didn’t make any dumb changes like glitter force did. 4kids changed the characters names to be more western but they did keep the pets names most of the time. Such as the Pokémon’s names and the yu gi oh cards.
4kids dubbed most of the episodes from the series they were dubbing. They didn’t do anything like glitter force did and take out episodes that were important to the story or mixed two episodes into one for no reason. Glitter force also did something that 4kids never did and added sounds to the transformation scenes.
One important thing here is that 4kids dubs were made during a time when these kinds of dubs were more common. Glitter force came out in 2015 and people were also way more critical of dubs.

I know you talk about him a lot but what is your big opinion on Jamieson Price?
Ok so I have to apologize: I got sick yesterday with… SOMETHING, I don’t know what but it had hit me last Wednesday too. I was pretty passed out for the rest of the day so I’m finally getting to a few messages D:
Jamieson Price (or Taylor Henry as he goes by in FEH) has to be one of my favorite actors of all time (that isn’t a 4kids actor). Like… I don’t mean this in a creepy way but to say I love that guy’s voice is an understatement; I get super excited the moment I recognize it in any media. His voice was MADE for voice acting. I think the first time I really discovered who he was happened when I saw the Pokémon Origins series; I saw his name for Giovanni and thought his take was… interesting. Then I finally watched a playthrough of Nier: Gestalt (sadly never got to play it) and enjoyed his performance as Papa Nier, then played Fire Emblem Awakening and married Priam and it all kind of spiraled from there. In FEH, he plays Hawkeye, Virion, Priam, Nemesis, Rudolf, and Zephiel (both young and old). Definitely a pretty big cast of characters.
Man, his performance as all of these characters though! I’ll try to break them all down as best as I can because while I don’t use some of these characters (Hawkeye, Virion, and Zephiel) I do like his work on them and I like some of the characters regardless. Starting with Virion, because that’s his most unique role in FEH yet, he’s perfectly flashy and extravagant with Virion’s voice, having that interesting accent (which honestly I can’t pin down what it is, it could be completely made up though lol). It’s nice that he got some more Virion lines in Eleanora’s unit. As Hawkeye, his voice is quiet and serene, and pretty mesmerizing to listen to, especially his line “You want my attention? Friend, you have it”. Of course that changes when you hear Hawkeye’s critical quotes and the dude goes berserk. Adult Zephiel though, HOLY SHIT that performance almost scares me. He sounds absolutely paranoid and unhinged (as Zephiel is supposed to), his critical lines are practically SCREAMING sometimes. And that makes his Young Zephiel lines that much sadder, he was so polite and enthusiastic ;w; Nemesis is fantastic, he’s bloodthirsty and violent, and the voice filter really adds the unsettling quality to his voice. Rudolf is pretty standard, but the best part about his Valentine’s Rudolf lines is the one where he goes “IT’S A HOLIDAY, RELAX!!” The juxtaposition of Rudolf’s steely character and that line kills me. Finally, his Priam voice is hearty and cordial, he has the tone of Priam’s devotion to strength down perfectly. Just wish that FEH included his “For the Blue Flame” line.
Ok, so interestingly, I think he fits pretty much everyone… except for Young Zephiel. It’s not on him, FEH just keeps most of the same actors for younger versions of characters. But despite the great job he does at trying to change his tone for Zephiel, his voice is still just too naturally deep for how kind of baby-faced younger Zephiel looks.
I know people might argue with me on this one and I SWEAR it’s not (completely) biased, but YES Price does have range; it’s just hard to hear it because he tends to get typecasted for his regular voice. But Virion and young Zephiel do prove he has the range: hell, I didn’t even know he played Virion for a while. Like I said, I think he’s more casted for his iconic regular voice (the one for Priam, Nemesis, and Rudolf). But he has a pretty decent range; maybe not as crazy as Ben Diskin or Cam Clarke, but it’s there.
Overall, and to try not to be biased, I’ll give him a 9/10. But just know that in my personal opinion, he’s a 10/10. And his characters need WAY more alts. Like we need a Hawkeye/Igrene duo alt (like Halloween Hector where we have little Igrene), a proper Virion alt, and DEFINITELY a Harmonic Ike/Priam Hero alt (IS, EVEN IF HE’S THE CHEERLEADER UNIT. YOU PUT HIM IN AND I’LL PAY FOR HIM. I DON’T CARE IF THE IKE/SOREN SHIPPERS PUT UP A STINK, I’D LIKE MORE PRIAM CONTENT FOR HIS CHARACTER).

my critical failure in the pokedela au was referencing the story instead of making a 4kids anime version where N and Preacher are awful at their jobs but Gabriel is endeared by their effort and every character has a quirky gym leader outfit and persona. Adam is still kinda fucked up but for very lighthearted and inconsequential reasons that vary in each episode (man is a hater but only because he accidentally burnt his toast or evie fixed his hair when it was supposed to be that way for fashion).
like a pokedela!anime version

I feel like a lot of people who hate on the yugioh dubs just follow the thought "difference is bad" when discussing it without actually thinking about the differences between sub and dub and wither or not the differences cause genuine impact. For example : the shadow realm is a harmless change, meanwhile hayato GX is a negative change. It is rather telling on someones views when asked about what changes exactly they dislike, because more often than not its aesthetic changes and not quality changes they get mad about (I am a dub lover
EXACTLY!!! god that's such a good point
i Love genuinely sitting and analyzing the changes and differences between the sub and dub because the scope of them goes so much further than just the "well the DUB didnt 1:1 translate the sub 100% exactly perfectly!! therefore it's inferior media >:(" type endless refrain. Sometimes you just get these Actually Really Interesting changes that give an added facet to the characters or the plot (i.e. Zane telling syrus he loves him and is proud of him in the gx dub, still one of my favorite dub additions,) and then other times you have harmless changes like the Shadow Realm (OR EVEN BENEFICIAL CHANGES. LIKE MAKING THE GIRLS' SKIRTS LONGER IN THE ZEXAL DUB. 4KIDS WAS SO REAL FOR THAT SORRY LMAO), and then still OTHER times like you said you have actual negative changes that would benefit from being discussed with a critical eye--I love hayato/chumley he's a fantastic character but oh my fucking god why did the dub do that To His Everything!!! THEY FAT JOKED HIM. AUGH.
(i mean i know why. teehee funny american cartoon fat joke character LAWL XP) (ugh) (thats another element, with the 4kids dubs, that i never see anyone actually talk about--the way a lot of the localization choices come from trying to emulate popular american cartoon character tropes from the era. ESPECIALLY gx. yugioh gx dub is about as 2006 as a dubbed anime could possibly be) (but that's it's own tangent.)
anyway YEAH! so many bad faith dub hater arguments just go after the surface level bullshit and it's like. ok but really how much did the fucking Shadow Realm existing tarnish your enjoyment of the story. honestly now.

Sudden thoughts on anime series & videogames localizations
I'm seeing a lot of rumours about who's actually writing the story and the Japanese & English scripts for the upcoming Sonic Frontiers, which version is the true, untainted original one... And it's getting very confusing and frustrating (for me, at least).
Many think someone at Sonic Team wrote the original story and script in Japanese, and then Ian Flynn wrote the English version with slight changes; this seems to fit the way SEGA usually oversaw the writing process in other recent tie-in media. However, in an interview with Japanese members of Sonic Team, it was stated that Flynn wrote the story and script in English first, and then Sonic Team translated the script to Japanese while making changes in order to make it "more suitable to Far-Eastern audiences". We still don't truly know what's the exact process behind the writing and translation of stories for any kind of official Sonic media currently, or how much creative freedom Ian Flynn & co. are actually given when writing either the IDW comic or the story for Frontiers.
There's only one thing we can be sure about: both the changes in the story during translation and this kind of cooperation between Western and Japanese writers are something intentional, planned and coordinated now. Long gone are the days of Archie comic writers spitting out "licensed fan-fiction" and SEGA also refusing to help them in the first place by providing translated copies of recently released videogames.
At this point, we all must remember that no matter if the original version of the story was written by Flynn or Sonic Team, no matter how good or how bad it is, both Flynn and the writer(s) at Sonic Team were aware of what each other was planning for this game's plot. Whatever the story for Frontiers turns out to be, it'll be the work of both of them together, instead of one party selfishly taking liberties and refusing to inform or collaborate with the other. Therefore, once Frontiers is released, the appropriate thing to do will be that any type of criticism -positive or negative or otherwise- of the story be directed at both Ian Flynn and Sonic Team, perhaps even treating them as only one team of writers. None of that "SEGA is keeping Flynn-senpai's hands tied!" or "Ugh... Yet another Yankee writing licensed fanfic" bullcrap.
--------------------------------------------------
On a related note, thanks to the English and Japanese versions of the trailer for Frontiers, we do know at least what kind of differences there might be on the game's final release; on one scene shown during the trailer, Sonic in the English script sounds more focused on dealing with the new threat while Japanese Sonic sounds much more worried about his friends. This has already been true for many 3D Sonic games, starting with Sonic Adventure 1.
Now, we could complain all we want about frequent inaccuracies in Western localization, or about how certain studios seem to be very obsessed with adapting Japanese media for the USAmerican audience at all costs even when that same audience tells them "No, there's no need to do that, we're actually interested in learning about original, unadulterated Japanese culture". But I've recently been learning from people vastly more educated than me about this stuff (oh, and I've also seen one "Fonseca" guy from the IDW Sonic comic vomiting one of those wild hot takes you can only expect from Twitter), and I've realized how irreconcilably different Western (not necessarily USAmerican) and Japanese cultures actually are. Making translations from Japanese to English as literally accurate as possible -as demanded by several fans of multiple Japanese videogames and anime series- might even be detrimental and something to be actively avoided. In any case, perhaps localizations are bad only when they reach ridiculous extremes (like many dubs made by 4Kids) or when the resulting Western version of the story is tonally dissonant in a way that the Japanese version wasn't (as it happened with Sonic Forces). Even then, that kind of region-based differentiation between versions of one same story or main character is often something planned and approved by the people in charge of the Japanese anime studios and videogame developers instead of something a few English dub studios do for shits and giggles; it's still common practice, and sometimes, this is even intended by the original authors: Naoto Ōshima once said that he and the others at Sonic Team had the USAmerican audience in mind when they created Sonic (even though Takashi Iizuka would kind of say the opposite later).
Perhaps I should use a more famous example...
When the original Dragon Ball manga was adapted to anime, especially during the Dragon Ball Z era, Toei subtly changed Goku's portrayal by making him a bit more typically heroic, as well as allowing Takao Koyama and others to write filler episodes and do pretty egregious alterations to other characters' portrayals such as making Krillin more cowardly and Rōshi more perverted than in the manga. Contrary to what happened with Ōshima and Sonic, this is a case of the original authors not having given their thumbs-up to those changes, and of course, Akira Toriyama rightfully criticised Toei for this (at least in regards to how they wrote Goku), but that's not why I brought this case up. What I want to point out here is… This is very similar to how the early English dubs amped up certain traits of the cast until making them more similar to traditional tropes of USAmerican action cartoons and superhero comics ("Superman of Japan" Goku, scaredy underdog Krillin, grumpy dad Piccolo, cool "jerk with a heart of gold" "actually a victim of Frieza the whole time" anti-hero Vegeta). Studios such as Saban and Ocean, as well as Funimation in its early years (and even today, to some degree), are rightfully blamed for this, but it's also worth noting that Toei never seemed to have a problem with how they were dubbing DBZ (even today, they don't seem to have much problem with Funimation's English dub of Dragon Ball Super taking cheap shots at Krillin again); since Toei was already doing the same sort of thing when adapting the manga in the first place, I find most likely that Toei and those studios dubbing DBZ into English always agreed on doing this specific kind of alterations to the original manga, both being under the impression this would help DBZ appeal to the USAmerican audience.
The Sonic fandom has always had great difficulty accepting the existence of multiple continuities within the franchise. I guess they'll have to accept, once and for all, that there are and there have always been at least two equally official versions for the Sonic series and for each character on it. And if they still care about the quality of the series, they'll have to care about each of those versions as two completely separate, vastly dissimilar, not inter-dependent things.

Okay listen I’m as critical of 4kids dubs as anyone but I WILL say that the choice to localize doremi by making the three main kids’ names start with Do Re and Mi was VERY cute
