K-pop Discography Deep Dives: ATEEZ
Tumblr media
ATEEZ was formed in 2018, at the beginning of the 4th gen, with eight members: Yunho, San, Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yeosang, Wooyoung, Mingi, and Jongho. They, like Dreamcatcher, have very in-depth storylines through their songs and especially music videos, and, also like Dreamcatcher, I won’t be going incredibly specific with every comeback’s meaning unless I think it’s vital to understand the song.
Here are my credentials: I’ve been a fan of ATEEZ for about a year or so, after I watched them on Kingdom, and a kind-of (?) ATINY for a few months. I admit that from what I’ve seen, I prefer their older work to their newer work, but so far that’s only true for their titles, and may not be accurate to their b-sides. I haven’t had the chance to listen in-depth to their new albums yet, so I figured that this was a good opportunity.
Tumblr media
They debuted with Pirate King, which, though a little unpolished, already has what would become the pillars of ATEEZ’s later work: anti-drops, hard hitting EDM beats, a focus on raps, sharp choreography, and a mix between deeper and higher voices. Though it’s not for me (it takes a lot for me to enjoy this kind of “I’m-so-cool” track), it is admittedly a very good introduction to ATEEZ as a group, and I respect it far more than I respect most other songs in this vein.
Treasure is also a single from this album, and is more minimalistic and more rap-heavy than Pirate King. Rather than the anti-drop of their debut, though, Treasure’s chorus follows through on its build-up and is ultimately far more satisfying for it. It’s still an “I’m-cooler-than-you” track, of course, but at least it’s also a bop. From the EP, Treasure Ep.1: All To Zero, I didn’t have a hidden gem but I enjoyed the rhythm of My Way.
Say My Name is one of the ATEEZ songs that I would say I know best, and distinguishes itself right away with its unique whistling hook and the time it takes to set up its great build-up. It also includes a drumline—though it’s slight—in the pre-chorus, and I really enjoyed how the bridge flows into the last chorus and eventually the outro. I wanted to point out that though I normally would have a problem with the raps, I don’t here, because they honestly fit it quite well and don’t feel like a random digression shoved in to give The Rapper™ something to do.
Tumblr media
Hala Hala, the other single from the album, gives me a bit of whiplash, truth to be told. Many of its parts are good, especially the pre-chorus, but together none of those good parts are done justice. From the EP, Treasure Ep.2: Zero To One, my hidden gem was absolutely Promise. It falls more into the dark synth genre, and manages to do something of an anti-drop while subverting the usual stagnation that one usually falls into, creating quite a catchy song.
Wave immediately stands out from the rest of ATEEZ’s discography, not only with its tropical beats and “Hakuna Matata” chorus but also just the general happy vibe that the song’s imbued with. After going through so many dark and serious tracks (with many more to come), Wave is both a very welcome break and a head scratcher, to be honest. I do like the song in isolation—the outro is truly excellent—but I get too distracted by how out of place it is to fully enjoy it.
Illusion, the other single from this album, is also more upbeat than is usual for ATEEZ, and though it’s a bit of a goofy track, truth be told, I’m more than willing to throw up my hands and have a good time. From the EP, Treasure Ep.3: One To All, I enjoyed the high notes and chanty post-chorus of Utopia, the catchiness of the pre-chorus and ethereal quality of Dancing Like Butterfly Wings, and the drumbeats of Aurora. I think this is my favorite EP so far!
Tumblr media
Wonderland, like many excellent k-pop tracks, feels like it arrives rather than starts, and though its mostly-English intro is utterly nonsensical, this song is too good not to win me over. At first, you’ll think it’s bound for an anti-drop, and it almost has one, but then it drags itself back from the brink and shuttles forward, managing to combine EDM, a marching band, and a deranged sea shanty together into a concoction so crazy that it works. And that bridge? Gets me pumped every time. I will say that I prefer the Symphony No.9 Version from their “The World: Epilogue” version, which really elevates it.
From the full album, Treasure Ep.FIN: All To Action, while I enjoyed the electro-breakdown and “tell me who are you, who am I?” of Dazzling Light, the great buildup of Win, and the encouragement in Sunrise, my hidden gem was definitely the sentimental, warm, Thank U. Thank U is a song that I have a background with: Hongjoong wrote this for Seonghwa about their friendship, as thanks for his support and a promise to always support him in return. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a sap; give me a cheesy song about friendship and I’m 100% there.
When I mentioned being more of a fan of ATEEZ’ earlier discography, it was really Answer that I was mainly talking about. Since the first time I heard it, it’s never lost its spark for me, and I think it honestly has one of the best builds I’ve seen in a k-pop song. The pre-chorus, then the chorus, then the post-chorus, and finally the vocalizing to cap it off are full on excellent, and I do mean that. Plus, I’ve never been able to resist a “let’s burn it all down” song as long as I’ve been alive, so you better believe that whenever I hear this one, I get the urge to turn up my headphones to ear-splitting levels of loudness and spin in circles.
Tumblr media
From the EP, Treasure Epilogue, I loved the return of the sea shanty with a more broken-down and distorted follow through in Horizon (my hidden gem), and the vocal showcase in the softer, more vulnerable Star 1117. I also enjoyed the strings in the outro; ATEEZ should use strings more often.
Inception, as the start of a new series in the “lore”, has a different vibe than the Treasure series. Though there’s still the great build, the EDM, the chanting and the fight-against-the-system messaging, it feels more contemplative and almost…melancholy? It honestly feels a little like one of TXT’s later, moodier title tracks, especially with the more romantic lyrics than are usual for ATEEZ and the climactic vocalizing. I quite like it.
Thanxx, the other single from this album, takes some inspiration from Latin Pop for its beat, and while I don’t dislike this one, it’s very much not for me, being quite rap heavy, veering a bit too close to an anti-drop for my liking, and having an overly-chanty post-chorus. From the EP, Zero: Fever Part 1, I enjoyed the more melodic take on EDM mixed with the acoustic guitar in Good Lil Boy, which was my hidden gem, but also the more ballad-inspired closer in the comforting, all-English One Day At A Time.
Tumblr media
Fireworks is, right from the outset, quite heavy on the autotune, to the point where it’s honestly distracting. While I do like the buildup and the chorus is pretty alright, this one just…doesn’t do it for me? I’m not entirely sure why, though the autotune is part of it, but for some reason, no matter how much I want to like it, it’s just not happening. The chanting is catchy, especially in the last chorus, I’ll give it that.
From the EP, Zero: Fever Part 2, though I did like the bubbly synths in Time Of Love, there’s nothing else I could choose as a hidden gem besides Take Me Home. I think that part of the reason I’m so hard on Fireworks is that Take Me Home is quite possibly my favorite song of ATEEZ’ entire discography, and to this day it kills me that it wasn’t a single. Its dark city-pop-meets-jazz is excellent, and the subject of loneliness brings it so much pathos that it made me feel something even before I looked up the words. And that saxophone riff in the outro? Absolute perfection. There’s no beating this one.
Deja Vu is up next, and has quite a smooth, minimalistic instrumental, which I honestly prefer since it seems that the autotune is less over the top here. Though I didn’t really dislike this one either, I just feel like it doesn’t go nearly as far as it could, just kind of marinating in a weird middle ground between average and something more interesting, like the last chorus, which brought much more of an interesting composition. The quiet rap was actually my main highlight here, so congrats, Hongjoong.
Tumblr media
From the EP, Zero: Fever Part 3, I enjoyed the catchy pre-choruses and surprisingly upbeat follow-through in Eternal Sunshine, the melodic sing-talk mixed with synths in Feeling Like I Do, and the more vulnerable delivery and stripped-back instrumentals of Not Too Late.
Turbulence returns to the quieter, more contemplative style of Inception, with vulnerable and inspiring lyrics and a gentle acoustic guitar that carries through the track. This song is one that finally gives their vocals time to shine, and I found myself being won over by this one basically right away. I loved the harmonizing and the emotions they carried through their voices, and though it’s a simple track, it’s a very comforting one. I really liked it! I didn’t have a hidden gem from this album, as it's mostly revamps, but I did enjoy the symphony version of Wonderland, as mentioned before.
Guerilla is the start of ATEEZ’ most recent saga, and unfortunately (for me, anyway) embraces the NCT 127 idea of sing-talk-I’m-cooler-than-you in spades. Though the build-up in its pre-chorus, the bridge, and the great vocals in its chorus do put it quite a few steps above that, it’s still not a pleasant experience for my ears, and probably feels a bit harsher than it actually is with how gentle Turbulence was. It’s more of a performance piece than a song, but to give credit where it’s due, it’s a great performance.
Tumblr media
From the EP, The World Ep 1: Movement, I think that the thudding EDM of Sector 1 would have made a better title track for how it follows through on its premise and makes better use of the members’ vocals, though it’s still not free of issues. My hidden gem was the synthy Cyberpunk, though, to no one’s surprise; it’s not quite as excellent as Take Me Home but it absolutely comes close. I also enjoyed the build-up of New World.
Halazia, though it’s from a “spin-off” single, is actually the song I enjoy most from this section of their work. Though its use of autotune is still a bit too heavy for my liking, I greatly prefer its somewhat understated feeling and gentler anti-drop after its build-up to the shouty choruses of its peers. Also, I appreciate, again, the vulnerability and frustration its lyrics show, as I can relate much more to its point than the emptiness of the other tracks.
Bouncy (K-Hot Chilli Peppers) had me concerned from the title, and unfortunately, I think that those instincts were right. Again, we have a shouty, empty, “I’m-better-than-you” track with a chorus that overuses autotune, makes absolutely no sense, and of course, just enough good in it to make me hope for more. Again, that pre-chorus is great, but…nope, no pay-off. I cannot stress enough how angry songs like this make me, although I’m aware a lot of that is how they embody all of my pet peeves and not exactly the song’s fault itself. Boy, I’ve got to take a deep breath and calm down. From the EP, The World Ep 2, I enjoyed the “I’m ready for the dark, I’m ready for this world,” hook from This World and the sing-talk-meets-slower synths of Django.
Tumblr media
Crazy Form is ATEEZ’ most recent release, and I was hopeful when I didn’t dislike the verse from the outset. Though I’m not the biggest fan of rap, I can appreciate when it’s used well, and the lead-in of it to the pre-chorus was quite good. But then, as I had a feeling would happen, there’s an anti-drop and all that hard work spent building just…falls. Ugh. Come on guys. We were so close! I’m not gonna repeat myself, because my thoughts on this one were pretty similar to Bouncy. I did like this one’s bridge much more, though.
From the album, The World Ep.FIN, I enjoyed the great build-up and post-chorus from We Know, the pulsing synths in Silver Light, the softer acoustics backed with drums in Dreamy Day, and especially Jongho’s breathtaking voice in Everything, since I wish he got more of a chance to use it.
So, I’m glad I did this. Though I didn’t really decide if I’m an ATINY or not, I did still enjoy finding a lot of songs that I’d missed in their work, especially their calmer titles and genre-hopping b-sides, which were a nice surprise! I guess we’ll have to see what the future holds in regards to my fan status, but for now the interviews I’m watching are giving me a good laugh while I type this up, so thanks guys.
My Top 5 songs are Take Me Home, Answer, Turbulence, Cyberpunk, and Wonderland (Symphony No.9 Version), with Not Too Late and Thank U as honorable mentions. ATEEZ gets an 8 out of 10 from me, which is about what I expected. Most of their titles aren’t for me, unfortunately, but they have a lot of good in their b-sides, and the sheer diversity of the styles really worked in their favor. When their excellent build-ups pay off, they’ve made some of my favorite k-pop tracks. But when they don’t, you’re left with something empty.
Tumblr media
Next time, we’re up with another girl group! Tschüss!

I'm bored, how would you rate each ateez album (ep etc) out of 10
Jenjamin I don't think you realize how much fuckin music they put out and that they're all called the same thing
(going chronological)
Treasure One (All to Zero): 5/10, solid debut album, "Pirate King" is a great debut track, "Treasure" slaps, but they were babies finding their feet so I have to rank it lower
Treasure Two (Zero to One): 7/10, which is a surprise even to me. "Hala Hala" to "Say My Name" to "Desire"? hit after hit after hit. "Say My Name" is still my favorite title track of theirs. and I need a "Desire" with San doing the ad libs with his 2022 vocals, please please please.
Treasure Three (One to All): 5/10, I love "Utopia" and it started the Seonghwa Main Vocal When movement. he just DOES that. but I didn't love the title tracks, so a few points off that.
Treasure Fin: 7/10, this was my first comeback (I started listening with "Say My Name" but watched from a distance) and "Wonderland" smacked me across the face. and dearest belovedest Wooyoung on "Mist"... he didn't have to break our hearts like that.
Treasure Epilogue: 7/10, remember when I told you I liked this comeback and you said you'd listen because "they have some good singers" and then you made fun of me knowing Seonghwa's name? because I do. anyway "Horizon" is amazing and that one performance, you know the one, is still one of my favorites of theirs. also one of my favorite songs to play on violin cause it changes between bouncy and expansive.
Fever One: 9/10, maybe it's cause it came out when I was doing a lot of walking and so I could just put it on repeat. anyway "Inception" is my third most listened to song ever on Spotify if that tells you anything. Yunho Baby on "Fever" like oh that's my boy.
Fever Two: 12/10 fuck EVERYONE who was shitty to me right before it dropped, this album was for ME! dad had just gotten sick, my hours were cut, the creep at the hotel was apparently starting to say icky things about me, I was miserable, and then "I'm the One (Remix)" saved the day. sounds like the first day after Seroquel where nothing is real but GOD are you awake to feel it. Pink Gumby leapt with both feet into Hot Bitch Territory and began his ascent to one of my favorite vocalists of 4th gen and the pink was litcherally for me idk what to tell you he said sorry these people are so cruel. also "Take Me Home" is a queen I take no comments.
Into the A to Z: 7/10, I'm gonna be real, D and I were both completely thrown off that "Still Here" wasn't a Vertical Horizons cover. liked the Korean version better (you all know why) but this is the one on my liked songs playlist. anyway, the tracklist is mostly my faves so yeah nothing really to say.
Fever Three: 8/10, catiny's first comeback! and they DELIVERED for us! the "Deja Vu" outfits were amazing, especially the little Lake Geneva ones. I'm gonna see Seonghwa in a corset in my yellow wallpaper. and that night that we all went apeshit for Pinkhwa Ponytail will live on as a true heritage moment.
Fever Epilogue: 6/10, honestly I just go to the Kingdom recordings. The Real was a killer comeback that I wasn't expecting right at the end of the year there. the "Wave" Overture is so much better when they don't have to fight the choreographers, even if San doesn't get that scrape in the official recording. also if I play Mingi's rap in "Wonderland" on repeat then that's between me and God. (although we lived through the "Turbulence" performances to get to San's modulations. was it worth it? idk but I just want to squish my bestie's cheeks and tell him he's doing so amazing in his battle against augmented fourths)
The World Movement: 5/10, I was so excited when the intro to "Sector 1" was the spoiler from "Answer" but I think I hyped it up too much. I would have liked Guerilla a whole lot more if they weren't so liberal with the pitch correction. how are you gonna have the whole "break the wall!" screams and pitch correct the vocals here of all places. madness and insanity (but D and me calling the Metropolis references a year in advance? our brains are sooooo big). should have all been Mingi channeling RKL, but it's his world and we're just living in it. also the big chest voices in "The Ring" deserve more, please give us more of that.
[but +5 additional points for San being an anarchist slut, there is no type better. he said "Hi Lesbians" and then came back to say "Especially The Cool Ones" with his doofy little anarchist stomach graffiti]

after attending 3 groups of kpop concerts I can confirm they are all fun, and a great time, but...if anyone wants opinions? I like to be positive, so these are all good things bc my friend asked me what my favorite group to see was and I couldn’t give an honest answer and here’s why:
bts concert had the most insane, well planned choreographed lineup with wicked good backgrounds and intense fans (in a positive way). that energy was unmatched. the concert wasn’t just a performance, it was an unforgettable experience
stray kids had the funniest concert ever. not only did they provide great songs and a good performance, but they had fun with the crowd and engaged with jokes, teasing (yes chan threatened to take off his shirt and didn’t I have video evidence), and took the time to really hang out with stays instead of other artists that are only there to perform their music. you can tell they were having fun!
txt has the most stable vocals I’ve ever heard live. like...their voices were so stable the entire concert and they barely took breaks to the point my legs were hurting from standing so long. also, yeonjun really is the king of 4th gen that stage presence was no joke. they perform their songs exactly like the recorded version -- they’re immensely talented since they all sing/dance/rap and each of them eat it up.

you just finished performing and your members were in need of water bottles
you just finished performing and your members were in need of water bottles
you just finished performing and your members were in need of water bottles
but fucking mnet didn’t provide any inside of your dressing room??
but fucking mnet didn’t provide any inside of your dressing room??
but fucking mnet didn’t provide any inside of your dressing room??
so yves told you to ask for some from the artist in the dressing room next to yours
you knocked on the door without looking at the sign that showed who was in there
you asked for some water bottles and heeseung went “i’ll go get it!” and ran off to go get get them
jungwon just chuckled and went “hyung’s a really huge fan of your group, he kept on singing star on the way here”
you nodded at the younger one, impressed at the fact that you were popular among idols
the tall boy came back with a whole box full of water bottles
“there’s 12 of you here right now so i figured why not get a whole box” he chuckled nervously
you giggled and smiled at the nervous boy
“thank you heeseung-ssi, i’ll take this to my members” you took the box in your hands but was taken aback on how heavy it was
“don’t worry i’ll carry it for you”
long after that you started hanging out and boom you became his gf
you couldn’t resist the charms of lee heeseung
once it was revealed that you were a couple, orbits and engenes went INSANE (in a good way ofc)
“wait so y/n DOESNT hate men????”
★ jay - aespa
OMG OMG LEMME TELL YOU ABOUT THIS BBY
you both met at school after you both debuted
everyone was gossiping around about how you were in the same class with the enhas
so like... monster rookies class
usually idols aren’t seated together but the teacher seated you and jay next to each other
causing a bunch of “oooohhhs” from your classmates
there were times were you and the enhas would leave school early due to practice or schedules
and on the way to the school gate, jay would always spark up a conversation with you
you assumed he was just very friendly
long story short he had a massive crush on you
so a few months into your friendship (which the both of you were very open about with your fans), he confesses
you were like “WAIT SO IT WASNT ONE SIDED THE WHOLE TIME”
y’all were just really blind lol pls read between the lines
anyways on to ur lovely bf !!
he’s so bold and brave around you but so shy around your members and seniors
we all know how he really respects nct (along with other sm artists) bc he covered the 7th sense with sunghoon on iland
so one day you were like “oh btw i showed taeyong sunbae you and hoon’s t7s cover”
he was like 😟 to 😧 to 😯
got all shy and was like “oh what did he say..”
you don’t know why he was acting as if he didn’t body that whole performance ????
anyway you told him that taeyong said that he and hoon did really well and that he liked how jay did his part
hid his face on the crook of your neck
“baby we should come say hi to them next time you go to sm”
“NO i will make a fool out of myself”
speaks english and japanese with giselle a lot when he isn’t occupied with you
sometimes you’d even have to ask nct’s shotaro to translate
your seniors (especially exo’s kai) adore him so so much pls protect the boy at all costs
★ jake - everglow
he was an active viewer of produce 48 and (like me) was really attached to the yuehua trainees
especially you
so when you got eliminated just before the last episode, he was devastated to say the least
he awaited your debut and when the time came he supported everglow !!!!
LOVED BON BON CHOCOLAT SO MUCH
does the killing part choreo in his room when no one’s watching lol
dies everytime you do the little “everglow” in songs
right so when he debuted in enha, he looked forward to meeting you as an idol and not a fan
when you shared a dressing room at kcontact, he couldn’t help but introduce himself to you
he mentioned he was a big fan and your heart warmed
cute boy is a fan of you? omg heart go brr brr
your members tease you and you just shake it off
that day when you got back to the dorms, you watched a bunch of enhypen videos bc you were interested in jake
you weren’t aware of how popular you were among people - let alone idols so you were surprised
you fell in love with his personality and started saying hi to him whenever you meet backstage at music shows
not long after, you develop feelings for him
you thought it was just a puppy crush but as you saw him even more, it got serious
you never actually confessed but aisha accidentally spilled the beans when he was passing by
“cmon y/n just tell him you like him because he clearly feels the same !!”
“you like me?”
“AISHA”
“that’s my queue to leave”
so she leaves you two to pour your hearts out to each other
you two become a couple and forevergenes (such a cute name omg) LOVE you two
you’re both the puppies of your group so that makes your relationship 103892x cuter
you met his parents and they adore you and even asked for your autograph
“jake used to talk about how great you are after every produce 48 episode”
“okayyyy i think that’s enough embarassing me mom”
his parents love you like their own daughter but does layla love you?
you were so nervous to meet her and was actually scared she might not like you - knowing how important layla is to jake
at first layla ignored you and jake was like “she’ll come around”
you were convinced she just doesn’t like you, until this one time you were cuddling with jake on the couch and layla comes in
you expected her to snuggle up with jake but she came to you :D
now layla is super fond of you and mrs sim would even send you pictures and videos of layla getting excited whenever you were on tv 🥺
★ sunghoon - itzy
you and the girls were at isac
the six of you were just waving at your fans and making heart signs with your hearts
on your left you saw yeji making hearts with ryujin so you wanted to do that with another member too
you felt a presence next to you and assumed it was someone from your group
spoiler alert: it wasn’t
sunghoon and sunoo were waving at engenes who just happened to be seated next to midzys
so you turned to who you thought was an itzy member, making half a heart with your hand
until you realized it wasn’t 💀
you bowed and apologized when you both looked at each other, you were scared you crossed a boundary
you bowed and apologized to the engenes who were there too
sunghoon and sunoo reassured you it was all good
after that, sunghoon couldn’t help but keep his eyes on you the entire event
when the day was coming to an end, he pulled some strings and ended up having some alone time with you ...in stray kids’ dressing room
don’t ask
ofc skz already left so it was just you two there
fast forward, you both hit it off and he became your bf <3
midzys and engenes love you both sm and love bragging about you two to other fandoms
you two were even named the king and queen of 4th gen kpop
oh also
you already know where this is going
“SUNGHOON HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW NOT SHY’S PROPER TITLE IT’S YOUR GIRLFRIEND’S SONG” - jay
brags about how he can do the shoulder dance in wannabe
ofc it’s bc you personally taught him
sends you pics of jyp as reaction pics
so you send pics of bang pdnim to him
every once in a while he reminds you of that video of jay why pee trying to hit a high note
“lmao that’s your boss”
PLS you always get super embarrassed so ofc you bring up that vid of hitman bang
“rAp dAncE-“
★ sunoo - stayc
you were his seatmate at school predebut
you came from the same town, same school, same neighborhood, etc
the two of you were extremely close and both shared the same dream
when highup entertainment accepted you, the both of you were over the moon
he was so happy for you
but sad too bc that meant you had to move to seoul :(
you promised him to do your best and that you hoped to see him again but as an idol
and hopefully when he’s an idol too
well what you hoped for came true !!
although you couldn’t see him much as a trainee - which made you quite sad - you got to follow his journey on i-land
you even asked your fellow trainees to vote for him
anyways now that you both debuted, you became close again and became really open with your fans on how close you were
you recommended his songs to swiths and he did the same to engenes
he even memorized the choreo to so bad and asap and lemme tell you this
he BEGGED you to teach him those choreos
“sunoo you can watch the practice on youtube”
“but i want to learn it from you”
he never really realized his feelings until he saw you getting shipped with his other members
you were both on weekly idol and the hosts really seemed to like how you and jake looked next to each other and they just teased you both the whole episode
that made sunoo feel uneasy and he thought it was only bc he was an overprotective best friend
turns out he had feelings for you (wow shocker)
so one day he asks you to come to hybe
after slightly getting lost, you meet up with him in a practice room
he confesses bc he felt like not telling you about his feelings would put a wall between you two
you appreciate his honesty and tell him you’ve felt the same way every since you were classmates
he scolds himself for not seeing it all those years but you just laugh it off bc you were pretty good at hiding your crush
you both agree to secretly date, until you both announce it on your five month anniversary
fans were really shocked at first... but they support you !!!!
engenes will not hesitate to come at anyone who talks bad about you and swiths feels the same way about jungwon
he gushes about you every single time you’re brought up
and you can’t help but love your adorable boyfriend
★ jungwon - iz*one
okay so
he was just an average high schooler when you were introduced on produce 48
his deskmate was watching your audition video and it was the part where you were doing this freestyle
he was SO amazed and he secretly followed your journey on produce 48
always made sure to vote on time and watch the episodes live
once the debut evaluation came around, he asked everyone he knew to vote for you and even bought tickets to see the show live
almost cried when he saw that you were center
ACTUALLY CRIED when you got into the top 13 😭
fast forward to him debuting in enha
he wasn’t able to catch up on you since he was busy with trainee life, then i-land, then debut preparations
but somehow in the middle of promotions he ran into you and BOOM love at first sight
fast forward to you finally dating, he couldn’t believe he was dating the y/n of iz*one
wizones make those “ladies and gentlemen, y/n’s man” edits and engenes make those “ladies and gentlemen, jungwon’s woman” edits
both fandoms love you two so dearly that the only hate you two got were from the delusional ones (who clearly aren’t actual fans)
when your last concert came around, he couldn’t bare seeing you cry when you said “this has been iz*one’s y/n, thank you everyone!”
he got flashbacks from when you cried during the final episode of produce 48 and he’s just.. sobbing bc he couldn’t be there to hold you
so the next day he rushed to your dorms with snacks and emotional support bc you were emotionally exhausted from accepting the fact that your journey with iz*one is finally ending
you felt extremely lucky to be in his arms and he felt extremely lucky too that he’s able to make you feel a little better
★ riki - weeekly
you were both on weekly weeekly idol together
and both you and riki being main dancers, you were asked to do random dance together
a few popular songs played and the both of you did the choreos
until after school started playing and the boy did the chorus’ choreo and you were like “woah???”
bc he was so INTO ITTTT
the song was basically made for him to cover it
and the mcs saw your reaction so they asked him to do it once again but this time with the whole group
after filming, he came up to you and was like “i’m a huge fan of yours” and you’re just like ):&/£]>\**_£]
“woah really???? i rooted for you on i-land”
and his face just lights up bc his huge crush on you developed even more
you became besties since then but he didn’t ask you out until your birthday
he took you out to a puppy café, knowing you were obsessed with dogs
you’d ask him to show you pictures and videos of bisco
“i better meet bisco once we go to japan together”
melted at the thought of traveling to his hometown with you
anyways
once you left the café, he kissed you in front of your dorms
and somehow he became your boyfriend <3
riki as a bf isn’t really a very public person
he’s the “this is our relationship, not the public’s” type of person
he doesn’t wanna risk companies wanting to exploit your relationship
although he doesn’t talk about you two much, he loves to brag about you when given the chance
whenever variety show hosts would fawn over you he’d just look them in the eyes dead and go “she’s mine”

hehe glad i could make you laugh, oooh that sounds awesome! yeah id love to be tagged it sounds great :)
YES the differences are so fucking weird. like, they do know they're the same age right? i feel like its just an exagguration of how much the persons role in the group matters, like we see chan being held up as such a mature, old leader while jungkook who is literally the same age, is still babied etc. like enha hyung line is basically the same age (if a bit younger) as chenle and jisung but somehow the rules are different?? as you point out, still legal but still bizarre. hehe yeah, i mean where else are we going to rant? quora lol. mmm, hopefully more people can just write less smut abt people who are barely adults
ah, no prob it didnt take long. yeah i think thats right (i keep forgetting you know my url lol) mmhmm :( i think if that happened irl there would be some major trauma going on. knock wood it never happens to you or me lol (/hj)
hehe same! oooh glad Redemption For Cheese was realised! yess we cant rllycomplain that theyve written/produced too much good music lol. yeah, ive dragged him into being a stay so *dusts hands off* mission accomplished. mmm yeah, they tend to have a certain vibe but tbh it couldve worked if they were any other group but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ahh ur one step ahead of me on the stages of listening to ssick i think, still not convinced but thats okay! hehe, it had to be said. yesss the itch in the back of my brain is very satisfied by sorry i love you, felixs vocals deserve to be appreciated! (side note i feel like hes trying to sing more like his speaking voice, sorta husky, but tbh i wouldnt be mad if he sang like in glow, his sweet honey vocals made my life lol. but i think ive heard him say he doesnt like singing like that cos it makes his normal voice less husky, so what can you do)
> YES SOMEONE SAID IT. seungmin rap KING, he sped thru that rap like it was nothing, he deserves more rap lines. i do like how they gave minho some melodic rap lines this comeback, my guy deserved to show off those skills that made him not be eliminated (flashbacks to stay collectively wanting to murder jyp) and we already know changbin can sing, my man murdered masked singer. hyunjin can obviously sing as can jisung and felix, and i want to hear chan rap more! i feel like he started as part of 3racha (as a rap unit not producing) and then just became a vocalist (which im fine with, but it could be nice to hear him flex his rapping skills) and was partially replaced by hyunjin. anywayyy
back to album talk. lmaooo sad music to twerk to PERFECTLY describes silent cry. yes secret secret is and will always be, a masterpiece. hehe glad i could make you laugh :) i just felt like they have similar vibes. putting off skz stuff bc of not having time to cry IS the kpop stan life summarised. oh my beloved track, red lights. ahh thats okay, we can have different opinions, but by god the lyrics are *chefs kiss*. *banging on table* TWISTED AU TWISTED AU TWISTED AU. yess id love to see ur take on it! sdfghjkl it would have been glorious
no no! not stupid, just able to predict my brainwaves. ooooh thats so cool! makes me want to go there (wherever there is lol) yeah the waves are pretty good here, but none of my familys a surfer, so we dont rlly enjoy the full potential lol. YES moving on to gone away, it is indeed a heartwrenching track, but the vocals and the bloody key change? makes me want to brave being sad just to listen to it. mmm yeah, good point :( i feel like ive just gotten used to overthinking so much so that it doesnt matter what mood im in, ill do it anyway, so might as well just do what i feel like doing anyway.
yeah i think ur right! it is quite comforting knowing that all the tracks will get the love they deserve. i feel like also people assume kpop is just one genre which is utter bs. there are so many different vibes and feels and songs, i couldnt get into kpop (of which i thought only the bright cheerful present day bts stuff existed smh) until i heard gods menu so... idk where i was going with this but yeah. :)
YES FUCK YG, theyre literally on the brink of being kicked out of the big three and they are holding their salvation hostage without letting them do ANYTHING. idek what thought process goes thru their minds but arghhh its so infuriating. yess lisa's cb will be awesome but ot4 is the gold standard here.
hehe, glad u could get to this point. no no! u dont sound like a cult member at all lol yeah, i loooove some of their songs but the whole 23 members thing is getting to me. thats prob a common problem with nctzens but what can i say? im a simple girl with a limit to how many korean boys i can give my money to. atm im just trying to get into ateez and finish memorising enhypen's faces. also kard is kinda sucking me into their fandom atm, as well as eric name lol. ah what can you do? ooh thats good!
hehe i love it too! its exactly like online penpals, that was rlly well put. aww ty! hmm im okay, recovering from a bad case of rsv so thats fun. im doing okay mentally, starting therapy soon (after having to convince my mother that its not just smth i can brush off). physically i wont go into, basically i should be doing stretches to help but they dont completely fix it so my lazy ass doesnt do them, plus i got told recently im going to be stuck with this condition for the rest of my life so thats fun! ah, before you type smth dw abt me ill be fine. the weather atm is cloudy but warm, its been raining on and off today which is good for the garden. uhh i just finished reading sunburnt veils and im in the middle of prom theory which is rlly good. ummm ive got a concert tonight? that i may or may not be able to sing in (bc of the whole rsv thingo) and uhhhh idk. my dog is cute? im drinking tea rn? ive got a school dance coming up?
wbu? hows ur day going, how are you? whats the weather like on ur end? done anything interesting lately? found smth that makes you rlly happy? just any random thing youve been dying to tell someone?
no no! dont apologise, i love these exchanges. i think im happy to continue them for a long time :) on the other hand, if you get tired of them, feel free to just not answer at any time. goodness gracious this was a long ask haha hope it isnt too annoying
<3 w.a. 🐺
sorry it took me a bit to reply, i was fixing my theme ;n;
yeah, i figured it was because of the roles too. my friends and i still get taken aback when 3rd gen idols are the same age as 4th gen ones. in my head it doesn't add up sometimes. PLS THE RANT AT QUORA SKJDK tbh tho it's just going to be normalized as the years pass? esp that the boys are growing older and the amount of explicit fics will just increase. i might have to start blocking tags.
i had to look up the previous ask to remember what we were talking about xd i hope the events in champagne problems never happens to anyone. realistically, it probably happens a lot. damn i really won't wish that pain on anyone. dragging your brother into being a stay i whEEZED JFKSA additional noeasy music enthusiast o.o and ALL I CAN SAY WITH YOU GUSHING ABT FELIX IS AHA WHIPPEEEED OML can't blame you tho, i also want to hear felix sing more in other shades (if that makes sense HAHA) i really hope they'll do the role exchange in the next comeback :( or like in the near future bc i know they can do it :( the day i hear seungmin rapping it i will respectfully pass away. minho was given more lines this comeback thank fUCK i could rmb my irl being vocal abt her frustration. i don't get why minho barely has center time/lines in title tracks??? like the line distribution in the past eras just made me ???? if seventeen can balance lines with 13 members why cant a group of 8 do the same? moving on. i haven't watched the stray kids show simply bc i don't want to cry HAJS but i've seen clips. imagine if skz debuted without minho and felix?!?!? i rmb another irl catching bias feels towards changbin bc of the masked singer only to find out that the man's a rapper. i love how skz's vocals were highlighted this comeback :c there were a lot of mellow tracks! i find it cute when chan sings/raps bc it gets kinda obvious that he's a foreigner? the accent (im not even sure if it's the accent) it just shows. "putting off skz stuff bc of not having time to cry IS the kpop stan life summarised." CORRECT.
abt the twisted au o.O i'll inquire my irl if she wants to write it or not. if she doesn't want to, i'll do it. i miss writing twisted aus <3___<3 and i also miss going to the beach with my friends :' ) but it's starting to get cold here and i don't think i'll be able to enjoy the beach as much as i would if i went beaching in the summer. so maybe next summer? gone away really has an sm-ballad vibe. the thing about skz being a self-producing group, their songs don't sound like typical jype songs? and i just appreciate that bc in all honesty im not a fan of jyp groups at all. PLS the overthinking. i wish i could mute overthinking.
anyone who assumes kpop is just one genre obv hasn't listened to a single track. if kpop was just one genre why do i like some tracks more than the others??? oh you've only recently become a kpop stan? tbh im not a fan of the bright songs of bts either. i liked their older ones *chefs kiss* really matched high school vibes. yg has good artists and they're just wasting the talent ~.~ that strategy they have will get tiring eventually. people will stop waiting on blackpink and move on to newer more active groups ://
HAHAHAH yeah the 23 members is pretty overwhelming! it was the reason i didn't bother stanning before quarantine started. i don't regret stanning tho, met my ult bias in that group <3___<3 i don't really purchase albums unless i like the tracks xd ohhh getting into ateez just in time for the comeback! let me know what you think about them! i was fond of them at some point but grew out of it. good luck with memorizing enhypen! it took me a while to distinguish to people there XD i haven't checked out kard yet but chan plays their songs during lives and they're sexc hype music me likey *u*
i had to look up rsv im sorry. i'm glad you're recovering! please rest more and don't stress yourself out. bro i wish i could go to therapy too bc i have weird issues i can't justify and i need a professional to tell me what's the reason behind it. stuck with what condition btw? what happened? i'm sorry in case i just forgot. yesterday was a bit rainy for me too :(( it's not the type of rainy that makes me anxious so B) oh concert! good luck and i hope you'll be able to sing but i also don't think it's best for you rn :c what's your dog's breed? and yes i just finished drinking tea too. AAAAA i miss school dances :(( the last one i was supposed to have was cancelled bc of covid.
i was less productive today and i'm teetering between being mentally stable and becoming a hermit again. i'm anxious with a lot of things atm so like : D not the best state. today it was a bit sunny but not hot hot which was nice. i changed my theme today bc i couldn't wait for sept. 1st. and no i haven't found anything that makes me happy HAHAHA shit like that's hard to identify. don't have anything to say too, i'm just thinking about why i'm procrastinating too much atm T_T and i'm listening to this rap song atm and one of the rappers sounded like han.
it isn't annoying! i enjoy the long exchanges but i do admit it takes me awhile to type down a reply. so if i get more busy, it'll prolly take a bit longer for me to reply.

[040120] BigBang and Coachella: A match made in heaven
Tumblr media
On March 9th 2020, Coachella Festival announced that the postponement of the festival to October 9th and 16th weekend due to the rise of COVID-19, in California and particularly its rapid spread to Coachella Valley. Fans and festival goers had been waiting for news about the status of the festival for several weeks now. Among the many front line groups set to perform was South Korean Kings of Kpop, BigBang.
The news comes as a relief to many VIPs, Bigbang’s fandom, who were concerned about the groups safety and their ability to travel to California for the show during the growing health crisis. BigBang’s fandom known as the VIP (Very Important Person) had been anxious for any news.
This was set to be the band’s first concert after their military hiatus. VIPs who had been tracking the COVID-19 news updates took the news well. Citing “it was for the best” and “safety first”. Many proclaimed it was better for the BigBang members to not risk travel at this time. Fans are regrouping and starting to make plans for October. VIPs are willing to wait till October for a chance to enjoy Coachella and BigBang.
On March 11th 2020, just days after the festival postponement, YG Entertainment(YGE), BigBang’s music agency released news about BigBang’s contract renewal. According to the official communiqué BigBang’s members G-Dragon, T.O.P., Taeyang, and Daesung signed renewal contracts.
Seungri, the group’s maknae, is currently retired and serving in the military. He has a legal battle pending under the military jurisdiction (please see other articles by this author for news on the legal battle). Many fans are waiting patiently for him to complete serving his nation and for justice to prevail under the law.
YG Entertainment communicated to the public to remind them of just how strong a legacy BigBang has built. Since 2006 to 2020, this band has withstood turmoil and survived. They have risen up every time they were knocked down. They rose to the challenges and conquered adversities.
According to YGE, “Going beyond musical influence, BigBang has changed the course of Korean pop culture. YG will continue to support BigBang so that they can continue to make K-pop history as a representative of our label.”
The response from the Kpop community and the general public has been enormous. Previously, the fate of YGE had been precarious but after the press release YGE stocks displayed a fast rise. The rapid increase in numbers is an indicator that in spite of all the scandals of the previous year this agency and more importantly, this music group is one that is still in the game. BigBang is “Still Alive” very much like the lyrics and sentiments of their monster hit of the same title.
The Legacy of BigBang over the years is unbeatable. BigBang has earned the reputation of being South Korean Kings of Kpop. They became legends of 2nd Generation Kpop due to their unique music and presence. BigBang debuted in 2006 as a five member boy band consisting of members: T.O.P, Taeyang, G Dragon, Daesung, and Seungri. Since then, the members have created history by leading the way for artists to write, compose, arrange, and produce their own music. Every member of Bigbang has participated in the making of their music. The result is a sound unique and full of color.
BigBang has never been afraid to go against the norm. Their personal styles since the early days stood out. They set themselves apart from other clean cut boy bands who sang and did synchronized dances. BigBang did dance but they cared little for coordination or elaborate moves, in contrast, their stage presence was larger than life.
T.O.P could simply stand in place while rapping and all eyes would be transfixed on him. His body language, his deep timber, his style, his presence were all that was necessary to win the crowds. But T.O.P did more. During their live performances he would play with the fans. Do outrages, dances and play pranks on their youngest member Seungri.
Seungri, now retired, was the maknae (youngest in the family) and that showed. He received a majority of the elder boy’s attention during live events. His natural enthusiasm, his mischief filled eyes and his amazing humor never failed to make both the audience and his Hyungs (big brothers) laugh. But he was more than comic relief. When he sang the voice was as sweet as honey.
Speaking of voices, one must acknowledge Daesung as having one of the most versatile and powerful vocal range among Kpop singers. His voice lends beautifully to a large range of music styles and genres. In fact, fans would tell you that his live performances at Musical Stages set the stage on fire. His ability to go from cute to sexy made him BigBang’s most popular member in Japan.
When it comes to power houses, Taeyang of Bigbang definitely packs a punch. When Taeyang is on stage he makes you swoon. His soulful voice and R&B influenced music have a way to make you melt and scream all at once. His talent and his charm make him one of the fan favorites of all time. He is known to give the best fanservice and his stage is one to die for!
Last but not least, G-Dragon, the leader who has one of the largest fan following for a solo artist in the history of Kpop (1st gen through current 4th gen). His musical genius is mind blowing and his stage persona slays even the harshest of critics. G-Dragon is the artist with the most copyrighted music in South Korea. His fashion influence is so great that whatever he wears becomes a fashion style in South Korea. His music reached the hearts of many celebrities both in Korea and abroad.
BigBang as a group earned the moniker Kings of Kpop during the Rise of the Halluy wave of the 2nd gen Kpop. Groups that debuted after them were inspired and influenced by them. Other agencies planned and designed groups to follow Bigbang’s footsteps. When new deputies were asked whom they looked up to the name most often heard was BigBang. South Korea’s 3rd generation legends BTS are among the idols who name BigBang as their musical influencers.
The pairing of BigBang and Coachella is a match made in heaven. A legend in Kpop performing at a legendary music festival! The VIP fandom still has hopes to see and experience magic that this combination can bring first hand. This journalist too has plans to attend Coachella and see BigBang electrify the autumn stage at Coachella 2020.

(smtm9 ep3 opinions + spoilers)
(haven’t watched, just read xD)
i don’t understand whether since made it or not but i think not?? she posted sth but isn’t on any of the teams. this is upsetting bc she’s REALLY talented. all this bc she doesn’t play some clown agenda/concept and doesn’t have good connections?? i know this show isn’t really about the rap but come on... i refuse to assume she didn’t do well xD
i think it’s good that changbin got eliminated. yes i love skz and do think he’s talented, and now i also understand why they put him in: skz are actually not that popular in korea yet, only among international fans. also see their 0 mama nominations :’D weird. anyway yes i still think it’s good bc this leaves more room for unknown rappers to get some screentime and spots on teams and stuff. it would have been nice to get some respect in khh for 4th gen idol rappers, but it’s not that important so maybe some other time. he or others can still do solo rap albums/mixtapes and stuff later. like mino, he gained a lot of respect with his first solo album, more than smtm appearances and stuff (i think). idol rappers from big companies still do already have support from their companies. and if not, well, they signed up for the companies so. it’s only fair to give more underground rappers a chance, to them it makes a much bigger difference to get some screen time.
ourealgoat was there but got no screen time and didn’t get picked :(
here are the teams so far:
Team Justhis x Groovyroom: Yenjamin - D.ark - Blase - Mushvenom - Munchman - Kim Gyuha (Reidaneon) - Khundi Panda - Miranni - Kidd King
Team Dynamic Duo x Bewhy: Kaogaii - Bruno Champman - DSEL - Chamane - Kim Mono - Rohann - Rose De Penny - Benjamin Kim - Greengrim - Untell
Team Zion.T x Giriboy: Sycho - Chillin Homie - Lee Kiwook / Xs - Mac Kidd - Kitsyoji - Lil Boi - Park Shinwook - Noahjooda - Skyminhyuk - Wonstein
Team Code Kunst x Paloalto: 365lit - Ahn Byungwoong - Khakii - Mckdaddy - Swings - Jambino - Juvietrain - Killagramz - Layone - Viceversa
[source]
i thought swings got eliminated from the previews but that seems to have been fake again. i’m super happy that rosy made it!! he’s good. my faves would be mushvenom, rohann, rose de penny, chillin homie, and layone. (not from what they performed bc i didn’t see lol, just how i know them so far) i think mushvenom has really good chances of winning. he’s already very popular in korea and has lots of connections, been on radio shows and stuff. and he’s independent so the prize of a label would suit him and nobody could be accused of favoritism or what it’s called.
tbc maybe?

Music Monday #184: ATEEZ - Deja Vu release: September 2021 genre: Kpop
I ... I had a plan to make up for missing all of last week that involved featuring a couple other releases before coming back to my precious 4th gen kings, but then they did a Mid-Autumn Festival Special Relay version for Deja Vu and seeing as that's kinda time-sensitive, here we are. Sorry not sorry for subjecting y'all to my ATINY-ness yet again. XD warning: I get into lore spoilers towards the end of this, so if you want to be unspoiled for the MV, watch it before reading the last two full paragraphs.
So in the run up to the release of their latest album, ZERO:FEVER part 3, ATEEZ asked fans and quite a few celebs to vote between two tracks, Deja Vu (preview: performance version) and Eternal Sunshine (preview: performance version), to pick which would be the A-title (some streaming services mark both as title tracks). In the end, the votes went to Deja Vu and while we expect to see Eternal Sunshine eventually, since we know they shot MVs for both, for now we've just got Deja Vu. Oh noes. Dark concept ATEEZ in the rain? However will we cope. XD Not well, actually - the members wanted to, in their words, explore unrestrained sexy for Deja Vu and oh boy are they ever. The song starts out a little brassy and with my beloved syncopation ... and then the bass drops as the song really gets going and within a few bars I'm having a hard time not chair dancing my way through the rest of the song. Deja Vu manages to hit in just the right way to give my stupid ADHD brain a much-craved hit of The Endorphins (it's probably the bass), so I've been listening to it a lot even before today. The whole album is on fire, I've been in some sort of weird Proud Auntie mode since it dropped last week ... even if "Not Too Late" (performed on M!Countdown, 210916) tends to make me want to cry. Because of all the work Mingi did before his hiatus that meant in effect he was only totally missing off the one release this year (Japanese single "Dreamers"), I didn't expect his full return to hit me as hard as it did. In fact, after the last eight plus months of seven man configurations, it took the guys mentioning it on the release showcase for it to register in my head that the dance sections of the MV are also seven man configurations due to Jongho being injured at the time of shooting - my brain was used to those formations after so many months and dozens of performances and I wasn't counting bodies because why would I? And yet something about seeing all eight together again is making this round of stages something special. Of course it's not an ATEEZ release if we're not talking about where this video (and it's post-action scene) fits into the lore story. As ever, the guys are still playing it a bit coy as far as where in the lore this fits, but right now at least, it feels like we're looking at another piece of HALATEEZ backstory? I can't put my finger on exactly why. We know (or at least we strongly think) red is connected to Halateez and previous hints have said the Fever saga is all backstory for what came before with Treasure. In fact, I would tentatively put this video ahead of Fireworks (I'm the One) in the timeline, although even that is a bit iffy - the glass case we see in the middle of the second rap verse has appeared before, most strongly in connection with Say My Name and Yeosang, but what exactly it does, how he got in there or even which Yeosang is in there are all question marks right now, so seeing it again, this time with two versions of Hongjoong ... answers nothing. As for the post-action scene ... well that's a whole ass problem all right. The chromer, the proper name for the mystical hourglass that is ATEEZ's symbolic item (see also: lightiny, the official light stick), is supposed to be unique, a singular key that accesses the different lines of the multiverse. But since we've seen the chromer whole and functioning just fine several times now in videos and stages that are definitely post-FEVER era, either the post scene is at the very end of the timeline, unlike the rest of the video (which then begets even more questions), or the chromer isn't as singular as we previously thought. OR ... this entire video has not, in fact, been backstory for either of the two main crews we've seen up to now (HEROTEEZ, aka normal Ateez and HALATEEZ, aka black Ateez). Between the original music video and now four live stages (M!Countdown (9.16), You Heeyeol's Sketchbook (9.17), Music Bank (9.17), and Inkigayo (9.19)), that moment between San and Wooyoung on the rooftop has gotten increasingly vampiric ... which could mean we're looking at another version of Ateez entirely? As if sorting out the chromer lore wasn't already hard enough, between dreamscapes and the Halateez revolutionaries and everything else! Oh to have a half an hour to sit down with Hongjoong and/or San and get them to tell me the whole story. I can keep a secret, honest! XD ZERO : FEVER part 3 is out now on all the major streaming platforms, breaking company records and taking names. Want to see Music Monday deep dives more often? Sponsor a song selection! For the low, low price of one (1) KoFi, I'll write up the song of your choice. ANY song of your choice. Yes, even that one that's been played to death. Yes, your obscure faves too. With sponsors, I can stop skipping weeks and falling further and further behind in the releases! Sponsor a current CB for the next open Music Monday slot (if I get enough, I'll open Song Sundays so waits aren't more than 4 weeks). Or sponsor a flashback for a Friday feature! But seriously, if you've been enjoying my selections and analyses, we (me and the foster kittens) would love a KoFi in thanks. DW | Twitter | Ko-fi | Patreon | Discord | Twitch
