@scoobydoodean had been posting about 4x17 It's A Terrible Life and it's reminded me of one of my favorite overlooked bits in the episode and how it shows that Zachariah is just wrong about Dean.

Zachariah's whole theory with this little experiment is that Dean will choose hunting.

ZACHARIAH To prove to you that the path you're on is truly in your blood. You're a hunter. Not because your dad made you, not because God called you back from hell, but because it is what you are. And you love it. You'll find your way to it in the dark every single time and you're miserable without it. Dean, let's be real here. You're good at this. You'll be successful. You will stop it.

But Dean has expressly denied hunting already at the end of the last act:

SAM Look, all I know is this isn't who we're supposed to be. DEAN No. I'm Dean Smith, okay? Director of Sales and Marketing. I went to Stanford. My father's name is Bob, my mother's name is Ellen, and my sister's name is Jo. SAM When was the last time you talked to them? To any of them? DEAN Okay, you're upset. You're upset, you're confused— SAM Yeah, 'cause I only moved here 'cause I just broke up with my fiancée, Madison. But I called her number and I got a damn animal hospital. DEAN Okay. What are you saying? Are you trying to say that my family isn't real? Huh? That we've been injected with fake memories? Come on. SAM All I know is, I got this feeling in my gut. And I know—I know that deep down, you gotta be feeling it too. We're supposed to be something else. You're not just some corporate douchebag. This isn't you. I know you. DEAN Know me? You don't know me, pal. You should go. SAM leaves.

Sam tried to get Dean to drop everything and go hunting. They stopped a ghost! It was fun! They could do this, but Dean's not going to give up his life for it. Dean has no intention of turning his life upside down to start hunting and it's not until Zachariah lays out one of the most depressing 10 year plan ever:

ADLER Positive. You are Sandover material, son. Real go-getter. Carving your own way. DEAN Well, thanks. I try. ADLER I see big things in your future. Maybe even senior VP, Eastern Great Lakes Division. Don't get me wrong, you'll have to work for it. Seven days a week, lunch at your desk, but in eight to ten short years, that could be you. DEAN takes off his headset. DEAN Uh, well, thank you. Thank you, sir. It's, um...but... DEAN passes the paper back. DEAN I am giving my notice.

He's already the director of marketing and sales and his career plan is 10 years of nothing but work to make VP of a division? Probably a small division? Everyone would quit with that laid out. Maybe not as directly as Dean does, but yeah, they'd be going home and revamping the resume. That's a dead end career path you'd have to bust your ass and give up your life for.

Hearing that and going "hmm, maybe I take some time and check out that hunting thing with that Wesson guy. He was less creepy once we started working on the haunting, for the most part" is actually a pretty normal thing to do.

And really Zachariah doesn't even give him the chance to go find Sam. Because there's actually a good chance Dean gets home and after thinking about it he just updates his resume and LinkedIn. He had to give Dean back his memories in that exact moment in order to try and leverage the situation to his advantage.

Zachariah stacked the deck and still barely managed to get Dean to quit his job. Dean wasn't running to hunting with open arms. He was, at best, looking at it as a more viable option than the shitty 10 year plan Mr. Adler just laid out. And Zachariah couldn't wait for him to actually choose hunting, he had to strike before Dean could second guess himself.

(Even Sam is making the choice between IT support call center or ghost hunting. This isn't hard.)

2020 Fic Roundup

Inspired by @andsmile & @heartunsettledsoul and others. Somehow I probably had my most productive year in fic writing since about 2009/2010?? 2019 me probably would not have predicted I would spend most of 2020 in partial lockdown writing ship fic for a pairing based on the CW’s version of the Archie Comics. But here we are.

One-Shots

I Find the Dark in You -  She wouldn’t see him until she could be sure it wasn’t her. Set during 4x14, How to Get Away With Murder. The parts we didn't see. Canon-ish post-ep. My favourite scene was Jughead puking on Veronica’s shoes.

Into the Deep -  When an old enemy captures Jughead, Betty will do anything to get him back. A future dark!Bughead fic inspired by 4x19. This fic poured out of me in about two weekend afternoons. It was so fun to write. I would love to write a sequel to it one day - I just haven’t had the right inspiration yet. /:

For Better, For Worse -  Jughead plans to ask Betty to marry him. And he did have a plan. A very specific, well thought out plan. Sometimes I write fluff!

Hanging by a Moment -  Pining!Juhgead and Betty and a chance encounter at Pop's. Pre-series. 

Let it Snow -  Betty is trying to get home for the holidays. Unfortunately, mother nature has other plans in store for her. Written for THE @stonerbughead for Bughead Secret Santa. 

In a Tight Spot -  Post time jump. Betty and Jughead are forced to hide in a pantry. Betty brought pepper spray.

Back to the Start -  Post 4x16. The fallout from Archie and Betty’s fake dating ruse. I rushed this one to finish it before 4x17 came out. It’s... okay. I wish I had spent more time on it. I didn’t know what to do with Veronica or Betty and Veronica in it. I wish I had done them more justice. Quite AU now.

I’ll walk with you in the shadows -  Betty and Jughead went their separate ways two years ago. Betty went to her dream school and vowed to put Riverdale and Jughead behind her. But a series of strange murders on Betty’s campus brings them together again. Why is the killer targeting women with blonde hair and green eyes – women who look just like Betty Cooper? I first had the idea for this fic towards the end of season 3 but post season 4 ended up working even better for it. Writing this and seeing the reaction to it was so gratifying and meant so much to me. Bless this fandom. <3

Time After Time series - Betty and Jughead reuniting after the time-jump. I have at least one more installment planned in this series which, fingers crossed, I can finish before the time jump airs and messes with all my best laid plans.

Transparent | RC - 4x17

A/N: Idk if I have ever cried out of frustration so fiercely as I have with the writing in 4x17. Not only was Ralph as intolerable as ever, but the writers actually wrote Barry & Iris OOC in order to prop Ralph up and make him seem way more justified and awesome than he is or ever will be. Well, it didn't work on me. I wanted to throw things and scream to high heaven and I was venting for days. I'm getting riled up now just recalling it. SO, this is my attempt to have WA explain how in the world they managed to act/speak/think so OOC-like, but in-character now. It's given me some peace of mind. I hope it can do the same for you.

The door to the loft opened with a hush, preceding a sigh from the two individuals behind it. Amazingly not collapsing as soon as they got into the loft, Barry managed to shut the door behind them and Iris kicked off her shoes before promptly landing on the couch.

“Oh my God, yes,” she moaned, sinking her head back into the couch and soft pillow surrounding her.

Barry smirked to himself as he rid himself of his own shoes and coat.

“Don’t you say it, Barry Allen. Don’t you dare say it.”

He held up his hands in surrender even though her eyes were shut.

“I say nothing,” he said, taking a seat beside her and swinging her legs around so they laid across his lap.

She quietly gasped, her eyes flinging open. When she recovered, her eyebrows narrowed, and she pouted.

“But you were thinking it.”

He laughed. “Can you blame me? I’m used to hearing those words under…” His fingers started to crawl up her thigh until she stopped their ascent.

“Don’t-”

“Different circumstances,” he finished, grinning but flattening his hand against her leg and moving it smoothly down to her calf instead.

“It was a long day today,” she said, softer now, watching him.

He nodded. “Yes, it was.”

“I thought I lost you out there,” she said, playing with her hands in her lap.

“But you didn’t,” he reminded her.

She smiled. “I know.” She bit her lip. “Was it scary?”

“What? Flying up into the atmosphere to the point it was hard to breathe and then falling to my almost death if Ralph hadn’t blown himself up into a smelly whoopie cushion?”

She laughed a little nervously. “Yeah. That.”

He shrugged. “I’m still here, aren’t I?”

She nodded and scooted herself a little closer to him.

“You know…maybe I was too hard on you earlier.”

“Iris-”

“No, I’m serious. I really came down hard on you about Ralph-”

“Ralph saved my life.”

“I know that.”

“He showed me it was okay to not be serious all the time. That was a valuable lesson that I probably needed to learn. Now I understand why he resorts to humor so much. It’s still annoying, but I get it. I can only hope he improves with time.”

Iris waited a beat. One, two, three.

“And if he doesn’t?”

She saw right through him. She always did. He didn’t know why he expected this time to be any different, but he should’ve known better. He could say all the right words with just the right tone. He could even mean what he was saying. But that didn’t mean everything he was thinking was being said.

He sighed.

“I know I defended Ralph pretty hard today…”

“And that’s fine. You should have. It’s your job to treat everyone as equals and call me out when I’m wrong. Which I was. I was impatient, and I was stuck in my own way, and you showed me how wrong that was, and-”

“Barry.”

He lifted his eyes to her and knew his tone had given him away.

He sighed. “It doesn’t negate what he did earlier, Iris. Or how he’s been acting this whole time.”

She nodded, understanding. Maybe for the first time in the last twenty-four hours.

“You weren’t wrong about there being more than one way to do things and that I should be more open to that. And I’m so glad – really – that Ralph stepped up when I was gone. The city wouldn’t be safe without him. I’m glad he was there for you guys.” He paused.

Iris made a half-hearted attempt to smile at the recognition he was trying to give.

“But there’s a difference,” he continued, “between solving a problem a different way and not taking the problem seriously. You said Ralph cares about saving his life, and I know that. Eventually he told me why he jokes around. It’s a coping mechanism.” He looked away, contemplating.

“But, Iris, during training or a crisis, that’s no time to joke around.” He met her eyes. “I have more experience than him. I’m his mentor. So I’m teaching him the best way I know how. Sometimes he listens and sometimes he just doesn’t, and I don’t know until the moment it happens. I watch as he takes the situation and goes in a whole different direction that we planned. It frustrates me, but not just because I think my way is better.”

“I don’t need things to always go my way, but I do need to know that everyone’s on the same page working towards the same goal. Ralph wasn’t doing that. He was acting like it was all a joke. Had there been any hint he took it seriously, I wouldn’t have benched him. If he had told me the reason why he was acting that way sooner, I would have understood. I’m not a guy who is too stubborn to allow for change. Doing things my way allows me to have control. It gives me some security in trying to defeat the bad guy, but I don’t think I was out of line when I got frustrated with Ralph. No one spoke up against me, so I can’t have been the only person who felt that way.”

Iris reached for his hand and squeezed it.

“You’re not, Barry.” She took a breath and smiled softly. “I know you’re not. And you’re right about everything you just said. I guess…I guess I was just feeling a little protective of Ralph because after everything that went down between us when I had your speed…at the end of the day, he respected me. So, I wanted to show him I respected him by making him look good in your eyes.”

“Not that he didn’t rise to the occasion like I said he did when you were gone, because he most definitely did. But…” She licked her lips. “I think a lot of the time it was pure luck on his side. And honestly, we were lucky that he got so lucky, because if he hadn’t, he probably would’ve quit the team more times than he already had.”

Barry blinked, his eyebrows furrowing. “Ralph quit the team?”

She nodded. “Yep. Several times. He got scared, he backed out, he needed constant encouragement. I mean, he’s a hero-in-training, so we all went the extra mile, but it was no easy task.” She paused to squeeze his hand again and lock her eyes on his. “What I said to you today, I did mean it; but what I didn’t mean to do was put you down or make you doubt how much I support you and your decisions.”

“Iris-”

“I know you mean well. I just want us all working together. In order to do that we have to understand each other. Your feelings of frustration over Ralph’s behavior were valid. I get why you benched him. It’s why I didn’t say anything to you right away. But…the reason I did eventually say something is because I think in benching him you decided to not even try to understand him and that stunted the whole team. When we refuse to understand each other anymore…we’re not unified, and we have to be if we’re going to get anything done.”

Barry squeezed her hand back, then lifted it to his lips and kissed her knuckles.

“You’re an amazing team leader, Iris West-Allen.”

She laughed, the tension seeping out of her.

“You’re an amazing Flash, Flash.”

He scrunched up his nose, then leaned forward and kissed her on the lips.

“Are we okay now?” she asked, burying her face in his neck when they parted.

He intertwined their fingers together.

“We’re always okay, Iris West-Allen.”

She sighed tremulously and fell back onto the couch, wrapping her limbs around him as he snuggled close.

“Did you apologize to him?” she asked, her fingers lazily twisting in his hair.

“I did.”

“Right away?”

“Yep.”

She groaned. “Oh, God, Barry, I-”

“Hush.” He placed two fingers over her lips. “We’re okay now. And with any luck, Ralph won’t put us in a difficult place again.”

She murmured a nervous laugh, and it honestly relieved Barry. It was good to be on the same page again, to feel validated in saying what he felt and being supported.

“I love you,” she sighed, and he smiled, lifting his head.

“I love you more.”

He leaned down and kissed her, and they forgot all about their problematic man-child, Ralph Dibny.

Once Upon A Time Rewatch: 4x16 Best Laid Plans

Yay! Snowing centric! It’s just a shame it had to be about them stealing a baby and filling it’s soul with darkness! Why ouat?! Why?

I hope that horn is cgi. Otherwise, poor horsey!

It’s cool that the unicorn can show you your child’s future. I wonder if it just shows you your future if you’re not expecting a baby.

I like those plants in Snow’s vision. That doesn’t look like the EF.

Oh my. I understand why Snow would be scared after having that vision. And I guess they couldn’t really tell much about what she’d be like from Charming’s visions.

Snowing are whispering shadily so loud and Emma’s right there lol! She must have heard them! 

Oh crap. Gold figured out that the Author was trapped inside the book!

He should be jealous hehe! Wooden Swan is a great ship!

Both visions could easily be true, given that Emma was a baby in Charming’s. She could have been an evil baby.

I think Snowing must have thought Maleficent’s baby was just a dragon. Considering that Lily’s father, Zorro, was also a dragon, does that mean there’s a whole species of dragon-people, like there are wolf-people.

Henry Daniel Mills. I wish we got more middle names of characters. I like to think Emma’s is Ruth. 

Please don’t make mittens out of puppies!

They did plan to give it back but still! 

I don’t understand why Maleficent just stood there. Couldn’t she have used her magic against them? Was she too weak after giving birth?

Oh she did blast some magic at them. But couldn’t she have teleported to follow them? 

Hope Belle didn’t hit her head falling like that. Or anyone for that matter! Hope no one was seriously hurt from falling! 

Uh oh, they caught Regina!

“No magic worse on innocents” Snowing. Get out while you can!

Oh no! Snow’s scream when she realised it’s a baby! 

And Ursula and Cruella fell through too! But did not look after it.

I hate this Storyline. How could they do this to Snowing!

I’m surprised Maleficent didn’t attack them afterwards. She had plenty of time.

I’m glad they told Emma the truth. She is not taking it well.

Emma, are you sleeping honey? You look tired.

That was nice of Cinderella to get them a baby mobile. It’s weird, Alexandra should be older than Emma, I think. I guess that means that from the time Cinderella is pregnant, it’s 9 months before the curse is cast. But then, I guess Snow must have been pregnant while Cinderella was pregnant, so no, Emma was always older than Alexandra. 

I hate that they made Snowing do this.

I love them though.

Let Maleficent see her child, Rumple.

Okay, this is breaking me.

How is that big ass key gonna fit in that tiny door?

Trapping the Author in the page for years was a bit cruel. Did they ever intend to let him out? Just let him write his happy ending and find a new Author.
