novemeber 5th is such a wonderful day. not only are we celebrating tumblr's most insane day, including the most homophobic gay love confession, but also the day some guy decided to blow up the houses of parliament

A tooth given by John Lennon to his housekeeper Dot Jarlett in the mid-60s sells at auction for £19,500 ($31,300). If you want to see it, you can do that here, but I am personally kinda grossed out by the whole thing?

Do you guys know that November 5 is like. A massive national holiday in the UK. We light fireworks. We dress up. Sometimes schools end early or on’t even open. Campfires are lit. Parties are held. We have multiple songs and poems about November 5.

I think we should gather up all the fireworks and put them in once place, I'm thinking parliament, and then set them all off at once. We get a fireworks display, I don't have to hear any fireworks which would have upset me all night, and we instil fear into those who don't care about us

Did you know that Guy Fawkes jumped off the scaffolding just before he was to be executed by the Westminster court? In order to avoid the pain of being drawn and quartered beforehand.
On the 5th of November, 1605, he was found underneath the House of Lords, guarding barrels of gunpowder.
Somebody had tipped off the authorities about the plot to Westminster Palace. Whoever wrote the letter/tip off, remains anonymous, to this day, over four hundred years later.

It's interesting seeing Halloween becoming more popular in the UK when Bonfire Night was the thing when I was a kid. Sure, Halloween is safer - less fire, no fireworks going off wrong and not as widely available in supermarkets for people to shove in letterboxes, not gathering in the dark in a crowd because dark is when the action starts - and you get to dress up and eat sweets. But. Hoping it doesn't rain, wrapping up warm, the heat of a HUGE fire, everyone watching fireworks together staring at the sky, writing your name with a sparkler, making sure you don't lose your people in the dark and the crowd all excited together, the smell of smoke and crunching the leaves on your way home for hot chocolate…
And the original celebration is because those in charge wanted us to remember that the Gunpowder Plot failed. But you can't remember that without also remembering that it existed and the opposite was possible.
I can hear lots of fireworks going off tonight. I thought Halloween might have finally taken over, but I guess we still remember.
