Lois Drake
Lois, born and raised in London, England, joined the SOEs at Bletchley Circle to make a difference to the war effort. She had a good eduction and was already fluent in French and German. She is effective and methodical with her job but not always in her love life. She’s been hurt by men before and so had sworn off love until she met a certain Lieutenant Winters and then everything just seemed to fall into place. Working alongside Easy Company was never going to be an easy feet, especially with the love hate relationship she has going on with Lieutenant Nixon and her friend, Kate’s, relationship with a certain Private Malarkey.
Josephine Nixon (nee Wills)
Josephine Wills was born in Ramsbury and grew up in Littlecote House. She studied Literature at Oxford university until the war began and her parents called her home where they were later evicted from Littlecote House by the government to use their house as regimental HQ for the 506 PIR. Josie never expected to fall for an American, especially not Easy Company’s Intelligence Officer, Lewis Nixon. But love is strange and when Lewis is sent overseas Josie will do anything in her power to follow him. Josie joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment to play her part in the war, working alongside medics and nurses on the front line to make a difference and she loves her job, but loosing patients takes it toll on her.
Florence Lark
Florence had always had an exceptionally beautiful voice. She was working at the local factory when the war broke out and having seen signs for the ENSA she went for an audition. She loved signing for the troops, raising their morale. Her job incidentally took her to Aldbourne where she met David Webster after D-Day. The pair soon became close, bonding over books and art that they loved, and of course music. Florence never expected to fall in love with him but no one could resist his boyish good looks and ch arming personality. But while the war was still raging in Europe the couple had a lot of trails to get through before they can be happy together.
Hugh Armstrong
Hugh was training as an engineer before Pearl Harbour. He quickly answered the call and trained as a pilot joining the 100th Bomb Group flying B-17 Flying Fortress’ across Europe. He is a kindhearted man who had a deep love and admiration for his sister who flies alongside him. He’s very good at boosting morale and will always be ready to have a laugh and a joke. He also gets his fellow pilots involved in multiple baseball games because he’d always loved the sport and it really brings them all together.
Hope Armstrong
She joined up shortly after her brother, training as a flight nurse to help evacuate wounded soldiers from combat zones and provide them with medical care until they reached a hospital. She worked as an orderly in a hospital before the war and dreamed of training as a nurse. She would often fly the Douglas C-47, as well as working in the back with the wounded soldiers. Although her squadron, the Ninth Air Force 806th Medical Evacuation Squadron is based in Berkshire they often land at airfields around England which is incidentally how she finds herself landing in Dickleburgh one day and running into her brother Hugh and the 100th Bomb Group.
Julian Owens
Julian was original born in Wales but he moved to Aldbourne with his parents when he was a teenager. He soon became fast friends with Josie and Jess and the three were inseparable. However, when Julian was a teenager his family moved to New England in the States but he often visited his friend during his summer breaks. Living in the States incidentally cause him to join the 101st Airborne and become a member of Easy Company so when his unit were stationed in Aldbourne Julian was reunited with his childhood friends and their adventures continue throughout the war.
William Beaumont
William Beaumont is a Lancaster Bomber pilot in the RAF. He grew up in Ramsbury and his family were very close to the Wills family. Both William and Josephine’s parents think they would make a good match and William is rather sweet on Josie but despite William’s charm and charisma Josie’s heart belongs to another. But in a world riddled with death and destruction who will come out on top.
Violet Elwood
Violet was born in Morgan City, Louisiana in 1923. She first meets Eugene Roe when he stumbles into her families shop with his sisters and from there their story begins. But Violet has a devastating secret that she’s keeping and it’s sure to break Eugene’s heart. They can only hope their love endures and it doesn’t die as a summer romance.
Maggie Reid
Born and bred in Dorset, England, Maggie plays her part in the war effort joining the Women’s Auxillary Air Force as a mechanic for the RAF Lancaster bombers sharing Thrope Abbott with the 100th Bomb Group. Her best friend and RAF pilot likes to play match maker between Maggie, a certain ground crew member Ken Lemmons, and Navigator Harry Crosby. The question is, which one will she choose?

Do you have kids? Fuck no 🤨 never wanted any and still don't, but have nannied for two babies/toddlers and after awhile they can start to feel like your quasi kids. You love them and it's hard to hand them back to parents who don't really... feel the need to put as much effort into parenting as you do into taking care of them when they're with you. If that makes sense.

Do you have kids? No, but I would really like to have them one day :)

It's an original anime, so we didn't know what would come next, and in the studio, as well, we were searching for the right way how to do something, in case of a lot of things - that's why after the recording ended, we felt a strong sense of satisfaction that we'd managed to create all of this together. After the anime ended, I had a lot of opportunities that made me really realize it how many people have watched the show. Before the project started, I had never even imagined that one day I would work together with Kenji Miyamoto or Akiko Suzuki, so for me it was an anime that let me taste the unknown, that is: something that I have never experienced before.
>To feel the essence of figure skating
In figure skating, charming the audience in dazzling costume is one important part of the sport, so from the point of view of the audience, it's such a gorgeous world. From the outside, that's what stands out the most, but this show successfully depicted skaters' mentality, and how the process of preparing for a competition looks like, tough practice sessions, and how they fight with their own bodies and getting old - even people who don't know a lot about figure skating, I think, can see how amazing figure skating is, and can touch something that can be described as the essence of this sport. In this sense, the end of episode 4., where at the same time we see the two Yuris practicing, and then we get to know the title of the song for Katsuki Yuuri's FS, left a huge impression on me.

I'll do my best, so you can enjoy this event, today. The anime finished airing, and that was the end of one chapter in its history, but at the same time, it was an end that made us think about what's going to happen in that world, in the future. I'm waiting to see the future of their competitive careers together with all of you.

Were you named after anyone?
Nope. I'm a trans man so I picked my own name. I can't remember for the life of me where I heard it first because no one in my life at the time was called like that, but it stuck and that was how I called myself in my head for years until I realized what it meant and how I could transition.
When was the last time you cried?
Not sure. I cry extremely rarely (toxic masculinity is hard to shake off). At my grandma's funeral 10 years ago I think? Or does one tear escaping because my wife and I were considering adopting out our cat when we moved countries count? (we didn't, but the logistics to move him were hell)
Do you have kids?
Nope, nor do I want any. Cats and rats only.
What sports have you played/do you play?
I've tried many, but the ones I did for a few years were swimming and martial arts. I do nothing at the moment except for walking, and that's something that needs to change but I lack the motivation 😐

A lot, yes. I even have a t-shirt or two about that 😛

Aside from their general appearance? Their openness or lack thereof. Since I can be closed off too, I guess I notice it quickly when someone seems reserved and try to adjust how I approach them and how many personal questions I ask.

"We work to live, not live to work" is my philosophy so I'm happy with my new job because it's interesting and still leaves me time to do other things. I'm not sure I would want to write or play/test videogames as a job, for example, because that would take the fun out of it and become more of a chore.

Fearless, forceful, fanatic England

Fanatics are people who have excess enthusiasm for their political or religious beliefs. So are England’s cricket team. They fanatically believe that there is no room for defending and building a total like they have done for decades. Their new theory is to go harum-scarum, and this strategy is forcing opposition teams into submission.
We witnessed a crazy opening day of the first Test match as records tumbled. This is the new brand of cricket that England want to play. Ruthless and fearless and when they do, the opposition is left with very little to do.
England mind you are playing their first Test match in Pakistan after 17 years. In Rawalpindi the entire squad was hit with a stomach bug and nobody was sure whether the Test match would get underway on time. But when it did all this proved to be false alarms.
England are playing Test match cricket like T 10 cricket. They are throwing caution to wind and they are not taking a backward step.
They ended day one on 506 for four. That’s the highest score ever on the first day of a Test match. And mind you this was not after 90 overs of play, as stipulated by playing conditions. Only 75 overs were possible on day one due to bad light. This is insane and something that the sport had never seen before. Not during the West Indies domination of world cricket in 1970s and 1980s. Not during Sanath Jayasuriya’s pinch hitting during 2000s. Not even during Don Bradman days when he was putting bowlers to the sword a century ago.
The point is that England is not banking on just one or two batters. Everyone is contributing. There were four centurions on day one and this is the first time four guys have scored hundreds on the opening day of the Test match.
Openers Zak Crawley (122) and Ben Duckett (107) added 174 runs in the opening session, the most runs scored in the first session of a Test match.
Crawley took just 86 deliveries for his hundred, the fastest by an England opener.
There was an Ollie People masterclass after that as he smashed a run a ball century and finally Harry Brook came to the crease and reached his hundred in 80 balls. It’s the third fastest hundred by an Englishman and the 25th fastest in the history of Test cricket. No prizes for guessing who has scored the fastest hundred in Test match cricket – it’s a certain Brendon McCullum, who also overseas England’s new aggressive approach.

Channel 10, 10 Play - Only airs AusGP, but the coverage is free!
Other motorsports available: Australian MotoGP
KAYO - A relatively affordable option. Covers other sports too, and every race as well. Kayo One is $25/month (one screen) and Kayo Basic is $35/month.
Other motorsports available: F2, F3, MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3, NASCAR, Supercars, ExtremeE, SBK
Channel 506, Foxtel - Available as a bundle with other Foxtel packages (movies, etc.) but is the most expensive option at minimum $69/month. You can connect it to F1 TV for free (for live times and other stuff like team radios).
Other motorsports available: Supercars, MotoGP, NASCAR, SBK, Supercross
I personally have a KAYO subscription, and it's pretty good since all I want to watch is MotoGP and F1. If you want to watch on your TV, follow other sports, and are willing to spend more though, Foxtel might be the better option.

Core Writing, Fri. 1.19 (Online Activity)
Friday's class was supposed to be a Murray vs. Graff debate. However, the snow for tonight and tomorrow may affect my 50-mile early morning commute from the burbs north of Pittsburgh. So, I'm going to post an online activity due by noon Friday instead. (I can't push the reading back for next week, or we have five readings to discuss on Monday, which is not helpful.) I changed the Schoology work reminder into a discussion forum ("1 Read Ch. 21, Murray (506-26) & Graff (548-55). 2 InQuizitive: “How to Use InQuizitive.” 3 Complete Schoology activity online."), so please respond by noon.
Murray, “Are Too Many People Going to College?” (506-526): Murray claims that colleges should not have to provide a “liberal education." "Liberal” isn't political here, by the way; he just means being educated about a variety of things. Murray believes everyone needs to be familiar with “a body of core knowledge,” which is “an important part of the glue that holds the culture together” (507), and that students should learn this by 8th Grade (508).
Graff, “Hidden Intellectualism” (548-555): Graff argues that we should get students more interested in our classes by appealing to their interests. For example, he discusses his own love for sports as a young man. Graff thinks that letting students explore their own interests in the classroom will allow us to teach them to understand these interests “through academic eyes” (553). Graff's point is not that we should just let students study whatever they want but rather that we should help them understand their own interests academically.
Online Activity Prompt (150-200 words): Choose Murray or Graff (just one of them) and argue with them. Use specific quotes from the reading, your own educational experience before SVC and at SVC, as well as anything you know about education, psychology, etc, as you make your point.
Dr. Sorrell's Response: Murray is out of his mind! Has he actually been inside a school in this century? First of all, schools do a lot of this already with core curriculum. Second, this might be a nice idea, but how would it happen practically? Is every single school board in the country going to agree to one thing? I agree with him that "facts can be fascinating" (508). In high school, which I dimly remember, I often wished that we had just learned more about what actually happened in history class. However, how can you propose something like this in three short paragraphs? My biggest issue is with Murray's depiction of college, which seems old-fashioned. (And I am 45 years old!) He keeps talking about philosophy (511-512) and literature, which are increasingly unpopular subjects. Nike’s roster of athletes is unmatched. Anthony Black, Guard
Team: Orlando Magic
Last season, he was the only player in University of Arkansas history to reach more than 450 points, 180 rebounds and 140 assists in a season.
He was also the only player in the SEC to reach the top 25 in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocked shots.
Kobe Brown, Forward
Team: Los Angeles Clippers
In Kobe’s senior year at the University of Missouri, he became the third Division I player in the last 25 seasons to score 30 points in back-to-back games against nationally ranked teams.
He was the only Division I player in the nation last year to shoot 55 percent from the field and 45 percent from three-point range.
Bilal Coulibaly, Guard
Team: Washington Wizards
He was quickly promoted to his senior-level French team after averaging 21.9 PPG, 2.6 SPG and 1.2 BPG.
He represents France at the international level.
Keyonte George, Guard

His 506 points as a freshman at Baylor University were the second most in school history.
He holds the Baylor record for most 20-point games in program history.
Jordan Hawkins, Guard
Team: New Orleans Pelicans
He’s made the second most three-pointers in a single season in University of Connecticut program history, behind only Ray Allen.
He helped lead UConn to win the 2023 NCAA National Title.
Dereck Lively II
Team: Dallas Mavericks
A five-star center out of Pennsylvania, he was ranked the No. 1 player overall in the state's class of 2022. ESPN ranked him the No. 1 High School Basketball Player in the class of 2022.
His 82 blocked shots last season were the second most by a Duke University freshman in a single season.
Olivier-Maxence Prosper, Forward
Team: Dallas Mavericks
He was a nationally ranked recruit from the class of 2020, concluding his high school career at the NBA’s Latin American Academy in Mexico City.
During NBA Summer League 2023, he averaged 12.6 PPG and 5.4 RPG at 25.4 MPG.
Brandon Miller, Forward
Team: Charlotte Hornets
At the University of Alabama, he became the first conference player ever to win SEC Player of the Year, SEC Freshman of the Year, and SEC Tournament MVP in the same season.
He led all Division I freshmen in scoring last year.

In the 2023 NBA Draft, he was the No. 4 overall pick.
He averaged 16.4 PPG, 5.9 APG and 5.9 RPG during the OTE 2022-23 regular season.
Ausar Thompson, Forward
Team: Detroit Pistons
A five-star recruit out of high school, he won a state title at Pine Crest High School with his brother Amen in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
In the OTE 2022-23 season, he was named the regular-season MVP and finals MVP, averaging 21.0 PPG, 4.8 APG and 5.2 RPG.
Julian Strawther, Forward
Team: Denver Nuggets
He averaged a double-double in high school at 31.5 PPG and 11.1 RPG.
He represents Puerto Rico at the international level.
Cason Wallace, Guard
Team: Oklahoma City Thunder
In high school, he was awarded two separate Player of the Year honors in the state of Texas.
Last year, at the University of Kentucky, he ranked among the NCAA leaders in assists per game, assist-to-turnover ratio, and steals per game.
Victor Wembanyama, Forward

After winning the Pro A title with ASVEL of the EuroLeague, he went on to play for the Metropolitans 92 where he earned the league's title for scoring and blocks with an average of 21.6 PPG and 3.0 BPG during the 2022-23 season.
He was the No. 1 overall pick for the NBA 2023 Draft.
