i desperately need your sweetest headcanons of ez and rayla being Siblings

Mandatory Rayla&Ezran brotp tag drop here & first some rambly meta cause like, a lot of this is based on the concept(s) of Ezran and Rayla fundamentally being more like each other than either of them are like Callum

Like they both grew up friendless (whereas Callum seems to have a lot more ease in actually interacting with new people & I've always HC'd him having less friends out of choice, cause those potential ppl didn't get along wit his brother) and feeling perpetually different, they both (like Claudia) take on their parents' previous paths and feel the weight of it. They also tend to have a lot of similar esque insecurities and hangups ("I feel like I'm letting everyone down" 3x03 —> "I failed them, I let them all down" 3x04 / "It's not fair you have to go through this alone" 5x02 —> "I knew I had to be strong alone" in 5x04 / self blame tendencies with "You knew? I'm an idiot! I should've figured it out" 2x08 —> "Ugh, I'm such an idiot. I should've figured it out" 1x09) and are both very much bleeding hearts. They're also willing to pivot away from prior missions (bringing Zym home) for causes they see as more worthy in a lot of ways — going home to rule (the individual collective) and freeing Phyrrah (the individual stranger) — even if that separates them from others and/or puts them more at risk, cause they're just loyal to causes and ideals and self-imposed responsibilities tethered to those concepts like that? I love them

Like they both are like Callum — Ezran is emotionally open and inclined towards vulnerability, like him, which Rayla is not, and Callum and Rayla, esp in arc 1, take on responsibilities that Ezran do not & all their stuff with adoptive dads and communication etc etc. — but they're also more similar to each other than they are to him. More on that here & here + bonus S5 hammering that in more than ever (Rayla going with Ezran's plan in 5x05 anyone?)

Now onto the actual headcanons

Rayla doesn't have a lot of patience for games (cards, chess, etc.) and will be a sore loser/give up when playing with just about anyone else (including Callum) but she can never say no to Ezran over it, and he's so earnest/having such a great time she can never be a total grump when they do play games together

Ezran is the one who primarily took care of her Shadowpaw, for obvious reasons, in the castle stables until she returned, hence why sweetie pie was waiting for her & ready for the Lux Aurea trip

The little archangel lunaris on his backpack was absolutely chosen with her in mind <3

Both Rayla and Ezran possess an abundance of faith in other people, and this is shown best when they're being supportive of or defending one another ("She'll know what to do" —> "He can do this, we have to believe in him" —> "She's alive. And wherever she is, she loves you too")

Rayla weaving a little braid into his hair and having Ezran weave one into hers as well because braids are for love and family, and they are certainly both to one another

This shitpost, which is really just them getting stuck on and continually adding to dumb bits for each other to laugh at

Playing pranks back and forth on Soren and sometimes on Callum

Mostly they just tag team chores like "making sure Callum has eaten and slept and left his study recently" / keeping their favourite mage out of his head

Rayla giving Ezran stealth lessons and Ezran having Rayla bake jelly tarts with him

They always insist on being on the same team when it comes to snowball fights at the Banther Lodge

Ez loves to infodump about certain things and Rayla loves to let him, especially since his trains of thought and ramblings are a bit easier for her to follow than his brother's (most of the time)

Rayla having Ezran teach her how to notice things about illusion animals so she can have an easier time telling the difference (Soren teases her about it and she socks him in the stomach)

This isn't really so much of a headcanon as it is a canon observation but in battle sequences Callum doesn't really usually focus (outside of when he's using said magic to protect Ezran) on getting Ezran away from the danger, instead trusting Rayla to do so — and she always does (1x06, 1x08, 1x09, 2x04, 5x09)

Because she's just his friend and not his subject (or for now, an official member of his council the same way), Ezran finds himself seeking out when he just needs to have dumb kid fun, and Rayla is always down to help him

On that note she's very good at knowing when he needs space vs when he's okay being fussed over (Callum, Opeli) and telling people that even when he may not be able to express it himself because non-verbal times / feeling overwhelmed

Whenever they go on roadtrips in the future, Rayla does her best to bring special snacks around for him (and teach him how to forage, which animals can help him with too)

Eventually when Ezran is a little older, Soren needles him about learning how to defend himself, and Ezran dreads having to hold a sword and initially refuses. But Rayla plops down beside him and talks him through it and reaffirms that they just always want to make sure he's safe, and that's what gets him to come around to the idea

Ezran and Rayla both being physically affectionate people — Rayla slinging her arm along his shoulders, Ezran often grabbing her hand as a sign of support (most often the one she was going to lose to the binding) and squeezing gently, like a reminder that they're both still here and everything's okay and/or going to be alright

Rayla tears up when she realizes that Ezran is finally taller than her, much to his mild annoyance and amusement

Ezran helps Rayla with her proposal to Callum, and does not tell her (or his brother) that Callum is also planning to propose lmao

She shudders with pleasure, her arms wrapped around his neck, rolls her hips a final time as he trails his fingers down her back. They probably didn't have time for this rendezvous, especially since her alarm blared in the middle, but neither of them like to leave things - or each other - unfinished.

Her alarm goes off again, and she groans and drops her forehead to his, shivers when his hands cup her hips and hold her to him.

"I don't wanna leave," he husks, his fingers digging into her skin, desperation in his touch and every shaky breath. "Let's just stay here forever."

She chuckles and brushes her lips against his, then finally succeeds in extracting herself from his embrace. "As much as I like the sound of that, I do have a job, and I don't think they'll let me quit twice." She holds her hand out and tugs him towards the bathroom with her. "But maybe you can help me get ready."

You'll see that most of these episodes have a buddie moment or are heavily centered on Buck and/or Eddie. He's not the ONLY buddie writer, but he has been responsible for a lot of them, along with Lyndsey Beaulieu, Andrew Meyers, Taylor Wong, and, of course, Tim Minear. We also have prominent "buddie" directors coming back as well, including John J. Gray (who wrote 2x04 Stuck and directed 6x12 Recovery ((ie. Buck falls asleep on Eddie's couch)), Brenna Malloy (who directed 4x13 Suspicion aka the gayest shooting scene on the planet), and Bradley Buecker (who directed 3x02 Sink or Swim aka Buck&Chris in the tsunami, 5x02 Desperate Times aka Eddie's comphet panic attacks, and 6x10 In A Flash aka Eddie pulling Buck UP after the lightning strike and "DO MORE!").

I was telling Zee yesterday the only time Juan Carlos Coto wrote an episode that I was less than thrilled with (at least when it comes to Buck and Eddie) is 6x17 Love is in the Air. But upon rewatching several times, I changed my opinion. Love is in the Air was interesting because it put both Buck and Eddie with Random Love Interests but also at the same time very much slapped the label of "THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT ONE FOR THEM" on it. So I'mma give him the benefit of the doubt because he had to adhere to what KR & Fox wanted and it really seemed like he did his best to adhere by what his bosses wanted while still putting several fail-safes in both Bucktalia and Eddiemarisol. He gave us all the red flags with Natalia, and also very clearly spelled out that Eddie wants to date Marisol for the wrong reasons (trying to recreate his last toxic marriage with Shannon, dating her just cuz she's there, and still feeling pressured to date in general). Man said I can't save this trainwreck of an almost-series finale, but the least I can do is give these characters fail-safes so the fans know these aren't their endgames even though it might SEEM like it.

Now, back under Tim, and with (hopefully) the green light from ABC, I'm thinking the writers/directors for season 7 can go absolutely apeshit on the buddie scenes. Maybe even sprinkle in a lil canon buddie just as a treat because we've all been such patient baby birds waiting for mama bird's backwash, ya know?

9-1-1 5x02 (desperate times) is making me age. from the “why did you have to see a cardiologist” look of concern buck was giving eddie to the “this must be your wife.” awkward moment. eddie saying, “somehow [me and ana] we became a ready-made family, and i don’t know if i’m ready for that.” made me pause the tv and scream through a pillow. how blind is the writers? i am 100% sure that a quick “buddie + christopher family moments” search on youtube would give them a 10 minute compilation. and buck follows it with, “eddie, I have been ana.”

I'm 100% they were meth heads already. They're all part of the drug scene, so he might have met them at a party or been introduced by one of his crew.

And it was definitely sexual. Here's a shot from 5x02 - Jo and Nacho are naked in bed together when Gus's men kidnap him. It's pretty hard to argue that they weren't having sex.

The Amber and Jo situation (and third meth girl who disappeared at some point) is part of Nacho's rock bottom, and it's deeply shitty of him. I'm sure that Jo and Amber have been sleeping with men for drugs long before they met Nacho, which is probably how he met them.

And I'm sure that Nacho justifies it to himself that if he wasn't around, they'd attach themselves to someone who was really mean to them, while he doesn't hit them or berate them.

And that's all that is - a justification. Just because Jo and Amber would be sleeping with someone else for drugs if not him, does not make it morally correct for him to take advantage of them, even if he's "nicer," even if they consider him a dream come true and only leave when threatened.

While it's deplorable, it's pretty easy to understand why he did it. He is desperately lonely but can't risk letting anyone really getting close. It's safest if his relationships are transactional instead of based in real feeling.

Intimacy in BrBaBCS is dangerous. It's why Gus didn't follow through with David, and why Lalo is a confirmed bachelor whose "family" consists of people he pays to be around him. It's why Mike is willing to commit any crime so long as it helps him keep Stacey and Kaylee happy - so they won't tell him to go away. It's why Kim allows Yep to be her boyfriend, even though she has no feelings for him. And in the most direct comparison, it's why Jimmy sleeps with prostitutes after Kim leaves.

These characters are all deeply, painfully lonely, and it's because their crimes cut them off from honest human connection. It's much sadder than Jesse keeping Badger and Skinny Pete around, because at least Badger and Skinny Pete actually like Jesse.

I don’t agree with Lizzie. I think that it would be super beneficial for June to be with Nick. He’s basically the only person that understands her and loves her unconditionally. If they could be together in Canada or in no man’s land, he would give her the space to heal, to be her true self, to express her anger, her sadness, her frustration, everything. He would listen when she needs to talk, hold her when she needs to cry, remind her every day that the new June is loved and worthy. We could have some really powerful and beautiful scenes. Nick can give June what she needs. She could do the same thing for him and they would be a power couple.

Oh, for sure. I dismissed her comment as having any bearing on how I view Nick and June's relationship and what the writing presented, it just made me wary about what could potentially be said or done down the line. I was actually thinking about June and fear

but the only time we've ever seen Nick afraid when it concerns June is being afraid for her, like when he found her bleeding out

and I was thinking about how Luke and Nick differ when they give June reality checks, whether intentional or not, Luke almost always ends up invalidating June’s emotions,

it feels like a dictation of this is how you have to be, be this way

whereas for instance in 2x02, Nick realizes June is acting a little chaotically so he first wants to know where her head is at

and then he actually kind of talks with her like, here is the situation, June, Mayday doesn’t really tell me anything, I’m in the dark as much as you are, there are protocols we need to follow, it took me forever just to find you and you can’t just leave, OK, you’re a pregnant handmaid and when June insists, then we get this:

and when she accuses him of trying to play a hero, that’s when he’s like so your actions have consequences

and because of those consequences, we’re in an even more perilous situation, what do you think your circumstances are, June? He walks through them with her

and he’s exasperated, sure, and it’s an argument, yes,

but he’s not dictating how she should feel or be, he’s illustrating that she’s not thinking clearly

Even in 5x03 the different language Nick uses compared to Luke in 5x02 is interesting to me because Luke is about obligation, you have to be in the present, you have to let go, you have to because I need you, Nichole needs you, your family needs you and if you’re not, what’s going to happen to me and you? While Nick’s language is about June keeping herself safe and keeping Nichole safe

and with Luke, as I’ve mentioned before she’s perpetually apologetic with him, and she is once again apologizing for herself

but she’s not apologizing for herself with Nick

when Nick has spoken about obligations, it’s because

and I don’t say this to demonize Luke or Moira, I think Moira being afraid of June’s behaviour and where June’s rage can take her and has taken her is valid and I do think that Luke is just desperate for his “wife back” but it’s like they try to "handle” her or form her, they strive to understand her, and Nick doesn’t have to do that, Nick knows June, he doesn’t try to fashion her into something and if June were with Nick and Nick were in the position he’s in now ...like from what I gather of Rose and how they interact and what she knows, she understands the weight Nick carries but I think June would some of that weight off, provide him peace and solace etc. so yeah, when I heard that interview I was like ... that doesn’t make any sense but OK.

it’s desperate times (911 5x02) and there are serious predators loose from the LA zoo. and the firefam is on animal control.

but that’s not really what this is about. it’s just the lead up. cause buck is legit freaking out. a snow leopard. a sumatran tiger. a chimpanzee! a chimp will literally rip your face off! while eddie is just fond. not even really listening--actually interrupting him to comment on how buck takes chris there all the time. got the place memorized. 

and like, if you are in the 911 fandom you know this moment. it’s endlessly giffable. so buddie-centric. so dad!buck it hurts. 

it’s also not the first time buck’s hung out with chris without eddie. nope. the first time (that we see) is in kids today (911 3x01). eddie shows up to buck’s loft unannouced with chris in tow. cause carla is in morongo, eddie has to work, and chris is gonna hang out with his buck today.

and the day goes great. ice cream and the pier and a giant teddy bear. until it doesn’t. until it’s the worst day of buck’s entire life.

that is. until he stumbles upon eddie. and has to tell him it’s actually the worst day of eddie’s life. 

thankfully, it’s a nightmare that lasts all of five seconds. and then chris is just there. alive and unhurt and looking for buck. because while buck’s been endlessly searching for chris, chris has also been searching for buck. 

because in the end--in the search--they’ve saved each other. and I think eddie understands that more than anyone. buck...there's nobody in this world I trust with my son more than you. 

in fact, that was the whole impetus of buck babysitting chris to begin with. maybe he can teach you something. only it turns out the lesson is love. because just like eddie, buck loves chris enough to never stop trying. trying to find him. trying to save him. trying to be the best buck he can be--for chris. 

and it’s the small things too. assessible skateboards and soccer leagues and lift-off hugs and trips to the zoo. trips that start...right now. 

because eddie brings chris right back to buck at the end of the searchers (911 3x03). drops 20 bucks for pizza and some advice. maybe try going to the zoo this time, something inland.

and it seems like they have been. for over two years. just chris and his buck and the zoo.

A NIGHT OUT POST-5X02

It isn’t their first public night out, but it is the first time she hasn’t been nervous about getting caught. The location must have something to do with it - a jazz club uptown, nowhere near where any of their friends live - but the alcohol plays a part, too.

He tells the waitress to keep the drinks coming, and with every dirty martini, she relaxes that much more. Before long, she’s leaning into him in their booth, her arm hooked through his and her cheek on his shoulder, her limbs loose.

Just an hour into the band’s set, her hand finds his knee and starts to wander up, getting dangerously close to becoming indecent. He returns the favor, teasing her skin under the hem of her skirt, and she turns in her seat and brushes her lips against his.

He deepens it almost immediately, the room fading, reducing the environment to the two of them. His hand trails up her thigh, and she pulls away with a gasp.

“We should go,” she whispers.

He nods, throws several large bills on the table, and pushes her out of the booth. They can’t keep their hands off each other - he had no idea that alcohol makes her handsy - and he’s grateful for the foresight to tell his driver to stay close.

Even so, the car takes just long enough that Kate pushes him in when it arrives, her fingers desperate on his collar as she straddles his lap. Somehow, he manages to shut the door, and the car takes the long way home.
