Punishment VS Acceptance: The Silvergrove and Callum
5x01, 5x04, and 5x08 were probably my favourite episodes for Rayla and Callum’s dynamic this season, for obvious reasons, and rewatching the bulk of the season next day after (and for a nice meta segue) I wanted to tackle the downright beautiful parallels between 3x03 and 5x01 (and a little bit of 4x03).
So let’s get into it.
As we all know, Rayla returns home in 3x03, and gets a... more brutal welcoming than she was expecting, partially due to her own perceived crimes, and due to the Silvergrove’s associative prejudices/inclinations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is extremely important to note that (at this time at least) Rayla is banished for something she didn’t even do: “But you didn’t run away from anything. They just don’t know what happened.” And although initially dejected, she remains hopeful and ‘confident’ that Ethari wouldn’t have done the spell.
Tumblr media
Ethari, however, temporarily chooses his grief and village over his daughter, and shuts her out... in a way, framing wise, that’s not too dissimilar from Callum’s initial cold reaction in 4x01.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which makes sense, as both Ethari (and later Amaya) state is quite similar:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, of course, while pursuing the exact opposite of abandoning her family, and trying to figure out what happened to them, Rayla is caught emerging from Viren’s old sealed off chambers in 5x01 and accordingly arrested. What I found particularly interesting is that in spite of being fully able to, Rayla doesn’t actually say a single word during her pseudo trial, Callum and Opeli doing all the talking for her (on both ends).
Tumblr media
She knew stealing the key wasn’t the right thing to do, but felt unable (or unwilling) to share the burden of the coins with Callum, probably because she hasn’t been able to rely on anyone in a long time (two years alone did not help) and that it’s always been something she’s struggled with. Runaan and Callum’s complicated personal history likely didn’t help either.
And just like the Silvergrove, Opeli is arresting her on the basis of association:
Tumblr media
and unlike the Silvergrove, on account of crimes she actually committed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I think there’s a lot of reasons Rayla doesn’t speak up in this scene - shame, the way she’s never been particularly good at advocating for herself, the general emotional difficulties present - but I think the main reason is that she left Callum an explanation in Through The Moon about why she left and he was still (understandably) angry with her, but more than that is that the Silvergrove flat out did not care about her intentions, and she knows it.
E: I told Runaan you were too good hearted for the work of an assassin, so I know you did not betray them out of malice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why would this time be any different, especially when as stated, she’s done all the things she’s being accused of?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But Callum isn’t the Silvergrove, so of course he’s different.
Where they stripped her of her home and literal identity, labelling her a Ghost, he reaffirms that her name - “She’s not ‘the elf’ - she’s Rayla” and that he knows exactly who she is. Where the Silvergrove robbed her of a chance to explain herself...
Tumblr media
Callum says that she doesn’t need to even when it’s being demanded of her. Whereas before her intentions didn’t matter, they’re all that count here, enough that he is willing to disregard literally everything else (including his own complicated feelings about said murder bow).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
C: I know this. [To love is simply to know this:] The tides are true as the ocean is deep. O: What does that mean, Prince Callum? C: It means I trust her. Unconditionally. Let her go. Now.
He doesn’t know ‘what happened’ as far as her intentions and motivations, only the worst presentation of her behaviour. But he refuses to punish her for doing something alone, for not asking for help, for keeping a secret. Instead he’s warm and compassionate and vouches for her, and if anything takes a certain amount of self-imposed responsibility on his own shoulders of realizing that if Rayla didn’t feel like she could come to him with something, he needs to be doing something different.
Tumblr media
All while also reaffirming his faith in her - that it’s nothing that would hurt him, that she wants to tell him, that she will tell him one day, that she will be ready, and that he hopes she knows she can trust him.
Because he loves her.

I'm the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition. (4x01)
You don't think you deserve to be saved... (4x01)
Can I tell you something if you promise not to tell another soul? (4x07)
I was getting too close to the humans in my charge. You. (4x16)
For what it's worth, I would give anything not to have you do this. (4x16)
We've been through much together you and I. (4x22)
I'm hunted, I rebelled, and I did it, all of it, for you... (5x02)
So, what, I’m Thelma and you’re Louise and we’re just going to hold hands and sail off this cliff together? (5x03)
I’ll just wait here then. (5x04)
What? I like past you. (5x04)
Don’t ever change. (5x04)
I rebelled for this?! So that you could surrender to them? I gave everything for you. (5x20)
Dean and I do share a more profound bond. (6x03)
I wish circumstances were different. Much of the time I’d rather be here. (6x10)
So I went to an old friend for help. But, watching him, I stopped. Everything he sacrificed and I was about to ask him for more. (6x20)
And the worst part was Dean, trying so hard to be loyal, with every instinct telling him otherwise. (6x20)
I’m doing this for you, Dean. I’m doing this because of you. (6x20)
I was there. Where were you? (6x20)
Dean, I do everything you ask. I always come when you call. (6x21)
Don't make me lose you too. (6x22)
I'm gonna find some way to redeem myself to you. (7x01)
You just met yourself. I've known you for years. (7x17)
Part of me always believed that you’d come back. (7x17)
I'll go with you. And I'll do my best. (7x23)
I'd rather have you, cursed or not. (7x23)
Cas, we're getting out of here. We're going home. (8x02)
I prayed to you Cas, every night. (8x02)
Let me bottom-line it for you. I'm not leaving here without you. Understand? (8x02)
I have a price on my head and I’ve been trying to stay one step ahead of them. To keep them away from you. (8x02)
Cas, buddy, I need you. (8x02)
Cas... we're gonna shove your ass back through the eye of that needle if it kills all three of us. (8x05)
...thank you, for everything. (8x07)
Cas...I got you, hold on! (8x07)
...you can't save everyone my friend, though you try. (8x07)
I don't need to feel like hell for failing you, okay? For failing you like I've failed every other godforsaken thing that I care about! I don't need it! (8x07)
I did everything I could to get you out – everything! I did not leave you. (8x07)
Yes, I am with you. (8x07)
I’ll watch over you. (8x08)
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy you're back, I'm thrilled (8x08)
I won't hurt Dean. (8x17)
Cas, fight this! This is not you! Fight it! Cas. I know you're in there. I know you can hear me. Cas… It's me. We’re family. We need you. I need you. (8x17)
Dean, I can go with you. (8x22)
Dean. I'm sorry. For everything. (8x22)
Please man I need you here (9x01)
Cas? Cas!.... Never do that again! (9x03)
Dean, you know I always appreciate our talks, our time together. (9x03)
Nobody wants him here more than I do. (9x04)
Sorry I told you to go. I know it's been hard on you, you know, on your own. Well, you're adapting. I'm proud of you. (9x06)
I came as soon as you called. (9x10)
Cas, you just gave up an entire army for one guy. (9x22)
...everyone you love, they could be long dead. Everyone except me. I’m the one who will have to watch you murder the world. So, if there’s even a small chance that we can save you, I won’t let you walk out of this room. (10x22)
Dean. I don't wanna have to hurt you. (10x22)
No, Dean. Please. (10x22)
It?" It's not an "it," Sam. It's Cas...Cas is family. (11x18)
I could go with you. (11x23)
Morning, sunshine. Some coffee? (12x03)
And Cast—Cas is my best friend. (12x11)
My shy but devastatingly handsome friend. (12x12)
I love you… I love you all. (12x12)
It's a gift, you keep those. (12x19)
And I just wanted, I needed to come back here with a win for you. (12x19)
We’ve lost everything. And now you’re gonna bring him back. Okay? You’re gonna bring back Cas... (13x01)
It’s good to have you back. (13x06)
Cas, you wanna try this angel thing, then go for it. Just don’t get dead again. (13x19)
Dean. You asked "What about this is real?" We are. (15x02)
Cas, I hope you can hear me… that wherever you are, it’s not too late. I should’ve stopped you. You’re my best friend, but I just let you go. ‘Cause it was easier than admitting I was wrong. I… I don’t know why I get so angry. I just know… I know that it’s… i-it’s just always been there. And when things go bad, it just… it comes out. And I can’t… I can’t stop it. No matter how… how bad I want to, I just can’t stop it. And… And I… I forgive you. Of course I forgive you. I’m sorry it took me so long… I’m sorry it took me till now to say it. Cas, I’m… I’m so sorry. Man, I hope you can hear me. I hope you can hear me. (15x09)
You don’t have to say it. I heard your prayer. (15x09)
What my true happiness could even look like. I never found an answer because the one thing I want... It's something I know I can't have. But I think I know... I think I know now. Happiness isn't in the having, it's in just being. It's in just saying it.
I know. I know how you see yourself, Dean. You see yourself the same way our enemies see you. You're destructive, and you're angry, and you're broken. You're "daddy's blunt instrument." And you think that hate and anger, that's... That's what drives you, that's who you are. It's not. And everyone who knows you sees it. Everything you have ever done, the good and the bad, you have done for love. You raised your little brother for love. You fought for this whole world for love. That is who you are. You're the most caring man on Earth. You are the most selfless, loving human being I will ever know. (he smiles, crying now) You know, ever since we met, ever since I pulled you out of Hell... Knowing you has changed me. Because you cared, I cared. I cared about you. I cared about Sam, I cared about Jack... I cared about the whole world because of you. You changed me, Dean.
I love you. (15x18)
Updated to include more quotes. Due to the deluge of script leaks showing edited or censored destiel dialogue, I decided it would be cathartic to collate the dialogue that did make it on the show. Data crunch: Dialogue spoken only by Cas and Dean. 65 total quotes: 34 Cas (52%), 31 Dean (48%).

feels like there's oceans between you and me
chapter 4 - 5x04 || there will come a day when we will find our way – why don’t we start from here
Over the next week, Tim realizes that he was absolutely right. It does not stop hurting any less. Distracting himself with Ashley only works so well, and even spending a day with Genny and his nephews only helps until he’s back home. Because then he’s alone with his thoughts again.
He does not like it.
Leaving him alone with nothing but his thoughts cannot lead to anything good.
Because his mind keeps going back to Lucy. It’s always Lucy. It’s like he can’t escape her, no matter what he does. Apparently absence really does make the heart grow fonder. Which is weird, because they still see each other every day. But it’s just not the same as before. Because they barely talk. And he never thought he’d say this, but he misses her non-stop talking.
Not that Aaron doesn’t talk, despite Tim’s continued protests about the shop being a personal life free zone. But the guy’s just not Lucy. He’d gotten used to her talking his ear off, had actually started to appreciate it. And its absence is still as weird and unsettling as it had been over two months ago. He doesn’t think he’ll ever get used to it.
It’d be easier if they talked outside of work, but… they’re not. Even their work interactions are minimal these days.
Then comes along the day when Bailey almost dies. And of course it’s Rosalind. And of course his fear comes back tenfold.
They’re trying to figure out how to get Bailey out of that… thing when Nolan wants to talk to him. They’re soon joined by Harper and Lopez, and eventually Lucy as well. And he can’t help himself. He needs to check for himself that she’s okay. He can’t ask, but he keeps glancing at her, trying to see her reaction.
And he doesn’t necessarily like what he sees. She might seem fine on the outside, but her eyes tell a different story. If he didn’t know her as well as he does, he might not even see the change in her. Might not even see that she’s trying her hardest not to let it affect her too much.
And it does funny things to his heart to hear her say she wants to stay with Bailey. Because she knows what it’s like to be completely alone with no way out unless someone finds a way to help her. And it’s very Lucy to want to make sure that no one else has to experience anything even close to what she went through.
God, he adores her.
And then Nolan disappears. Because of course Rosalind would get him away from this for whatever reason. Nolan wouldn’t leave if he absolutely didn’t have another choice, so he assumes the worst. And sitting next to Lucy in the same shop is… as comforting as it is concerning. Comforting because it’s the closest they’ve been in a long time, concerning because they’re, well, dealing with Rosalind and her games. Again. And all he wants to do is protect her from this.
Is heart skips a beat when Lucy turns to him when Bailey asks where Nolan is. He doesn’t want to read too much into it, but maybe, just maybe, he can still offer some sort of reassurance and comfort for her. And he’s glad she’s asking, even if it’s not with words. Especially because it’s not with words.
He listens to Lucy and Juarez talk to Bailey, trying to keep her as calm as possible while he supervises the firefighters and their attempt to find a place to loosen the floorboards. His gaze inevitably drifts to Lucy again, making sure she’s okay. Yes, thank you, he knows she can handle herself, of course he does. But he worries. No matter what, he will always worry about her.
He turns his gaze away as she turns to look at him. Not because he doesn’t want to keep reassuring himself, but because he can’t let her see how much this is affecting him. He’s not the one being faced with trauma again, it’s Lucy. But he’ll never forget the day when he thought he’d lost her forever.
When the firefighters have eventually managed to saw a whole in the floor that’s big enough to fit a human, he doesn’t hesitate to take off his duty belt to be the one to go down. He calls Lucy over, but before he can even say anything, she says she’ll do it.
Over his dead body. No way is he risking anything here. If there are more traps, he’ll gladly be the one to walk into them if it means keeping Lucy out of harm’s way. She is of course not happy, but reluctantly accepts.
He can’t help but look at her when they lower him down into the unknown. If this is the last thing he does, he wants her to be the last thing, the last person he sees. He’s a little surprised to see her gaze firmly set on him, but he’s relieved to know that he’s not the only one affected by this. And that he can look into her eyes as he prepares himself for whatever greets him on the other side.
No, they haven’t really been talking much lately, and everything that had happened between them since their practice kiss remains unsaid, like a shadow looming over them. But at least they’re starting to find their way again, even if it’s because they have to, to try and save Bailey. But it’s a start.
They somehow manage to get Bailey out of that contraption, but she’s not breathing when Juarez pulls her out. He’s not there for any of it, but he later learns that it was Lucy who did CPR on her. And it somehow feels a little like a full circle moment. Lucy surviving what Caleb did, and now she’s beating Rosalind again by saving Bailey.
He's not usually one to think about things like that, but it’s Lucy. And everything is different with her.
When they pull up to the house Rosalind led Nolan to and they see that she’s finally dead and can’t cause any more trauma, it feels a little too easy. Not real, like Lucy says. He knows his tone isn’t as gentle as it could be if things were different with them, but he has to at least try and pretend that he doesn’t want to take her in his arms and never let go.
He hopes Rosalind’s death will help Lucy in whatever way it can. He knows she’ll never totally move on from what she went through, no one could, but now both people who tried to break her are dead. Maybe it’ll help her find a little more peace. He knows it’ll help him.
He doesn’t have much more time to think about it before the Feds come along and he’s whisked away from everyone else to show Acres and Stensen the basement of the house Rosalind had set up. And Stensen’s comment about being who he is because of his childhood doesn’t exactly help calm him down. As if the day hadn’t been bad enough already.
After shift, he manages to catch Lucy in the parking lot before she heads home. He’s not sure what he wants to say, and if she even wants to talk to him. But he just wants to make sure she’s really okay. She hesitates before she answers, gaze fixated on a point somewhere behind him as she contemplates what to say.
If she’s surprised that he’s asking, she’s hiding it well. Eventually she says she thinks she will be, maybe not today, but someday. He supposes it’s the most she can say right now while she’s still trying to make sense of it all. He so desperately wishes he could help her through this somehow.
But he’s not sure what’s allowed anymore. Before, he might’ve asked if she maybe needed a hug, or offered to talk it out with her, go get a drink, or whatever she wanted. Now though? He stands before her in awkward silence, not knowing what to say. He wants to tell her to let him know if she needed anything, but he doesn’t. He hopes she knows it anyway. Hopes she knows that, despite everything, he’ll always be there for her if she asks. And even if she doesn’t.
So he offers her a small smile, and wishes her a good night. The soft murmur of her voice as she echoes his words has his heart skipping a beat before they go their separate ways. The entire drive home to his house, he debates whether he should’ve said more, made sure she really knew she could always ask if she needed something. But he also doesn’t want to force himself into her life.
He told her to move on for a reason, he reminds himself. He has to keep his distance. But it’s hard to just pretend to not care. But at least the fear has died down considerably now that Rosalind is dead.
When he opens his front door a while after he’s been home, a tiny part of him thinks it’s Lucy. For just a second, his treacherous heart has him hoping, wishing before it drops at the sight of Ashley. Damn it. He is so not in the mood for this.
She starts talking and doesn’t stop. He tries to listen, really, he does. But is mind stops at Whole30. What the hell is Whole30?!
Seriously, he does not need to diet. What in the world is she thinking? But then she tells him that Jerry’s been having heart trouble lately, and he feels like an idiot again. Not only had he not realized that he’d apparently been struggling, but he’d paid little to no attention to him or Ashley.
So what else can he do but comply?
But he wants to be with Lucy, not here with a girlfriend who continues to annoy him, for lack of better word. But he’s a grown ass adult, he can break things off if he wants to. He doesn’t have to always do as she pleases. But he’s had this argument with himself before. And nothing’s changed since then.
So, a shitty end to a shitty day it is.
The only bright spot is that he and Lucy are slowly finding their footing again. Because apparently no matter how much time they spend apart, they will somehow always manage to fall into a familiar rhythm with each other when they work together.
And he’s grateful for that. Because it means that they might just be able to find their back to being friends again, if nothing else.
And it’s more than he can hope for at this point.

are there any episodes of the show you think are underrated?
oh, SO many:
seize the day (3x11) i'll never stop talking about how criminally underrated this episode was, it had absolutely everything—a chimney centric plotline, firefam feels, great emergencies—one of my top 911 comfort episodes
i feel like the earthquake episodes often get overlooked because fans only talk about the tsunami, but they're SO good, and if you haven't rewatched those in a while, i really recommend you do
home and away (5x04) was such a heart-breaking and gut-wrenching episode, and fandom really sleeps on it
crash and learn (6x02) was really good, too, not just for the happiness convention, but the rest of the stuff with hen, and with athena and her mom was really well-written, too
awful people (2x05) is also an underrated episode that i love!
defend in place (5x08) is legitimately one of the best episodes on the show and i have no clue why people sleep on it probably because they're determined to hate on 5A to an unreasonable extent
maybe i'm biased since i'm an eddie girlie but i really like cursed (6x07) not just because it was eddie-centric but because we got to see so many different dynamics
broken (2x14) is a really good episode, super stressful but in a great way

Jess Watches // Sun 10 Dec // Day 79 Synopses & Favourite Scenes & Poll
Ugly Betty (rewatching with mum) 3x11 Dress for Success
Betty juggles work and family without much success. Wilhelmina helps Daniel find some alone time with Molly so that she can have Connor for herself.
The always relatable struggle of finding a work-life balance and learning through failing. Daniel sent her home so Betty should have been there to help and celebrate Hilda. If only she had :'(
Workin' Moms (with mum) 1x08 Hoop Earring
Kate looks for a nanny. Jenny organizes a bachelorette party for a coworker. Giselle deals with Frankie's fear of intimacy.
That earring was not sterilized and passed between multiple hands. Jenny would definitely get an infection. She is so messy but at least she finally had the realization that she should leave her husband. Also, yay to Frankie and Giselle for getting their groove back.
What We Do in the Shadows 5x04 The Campaign
Colin runs for office; Nandor makes a new friend; Nadja reconnects with her roots.
Nandor was looking buff this episode. No wonder Guillermo is finding it hard physically and emotionally to stay away from him. Also, I'm very much Nandor telling him to stfu during the movie.
The Dragon Prince 5x04 The Great Bookery
As Callum scours Lux Aurea's library for lore of the Startouch elves, Amaya clears the air with Rayla. Karim meets a powerful potential ally.
Amaya's talk with Rayla was so sweet (minus the death threat ofc lol). The forgiveness and understanding that they are stronger together. Amaya being the brave warrior she is, tucking Janai's flower behind her ear, yeeting Bait to safety, and fighting through the corrupted banthers so the others can flee to safety. I was so relieved when it showed her getting into the book drop. Whew.

i feel like we all moved on from the 5x04 home and away homecoming call. like one of eddie's first calls as hen's paramedic now chimney is gone was two best friends that got mixed up because she asked for her friend with her dying breaths. eddie who had a well collapse on top of him and buck who could only scream eddie's name. eddie who got shot in front of buck who shouted his name over and over as he tried to save him. eddie who thought of buck and fought his way back to the land of the living. eddie who reached for buck with the last of his strength.

Note
i desperately need your sweetest headcanons of ez and rayla being Siblings
Mandatory Rayla&Ezran brotp tag drop here & first some rambly meta cause like, a lot of this is based on the concept(s) of Ezran and Rayla fundamentally being more like each other than either of them are like Callum
Like they both grew up friendless (whereas Callum seems to have a lot more ease in actually interacting with new people & I've always HC'd him having less friends out of choice, cause those potential ppl didn't get along wit his brother) and feeling perpetually different, they both (like Claudia) take on their parents' previous paths and feel the weight of it. They also tend to have a lot of similar esque insecurities and hangups ("I feel like I'm letting everyone down" 3x03 —> "I failed them, I let them all down" 3x04 / "It's not fair you have to go through this alone" 5x02 —> "I knew I had to be strong alone" in 5x04 / self blame tendencies with "You knew? I'm an idiot! I should've figured it out" 2x08 —> "Ugh, I'm such an idiot. I should've figured it out" 1x09) and are both very much bleeding hearts. They're also willing to pivot away from prior missions (bringing Zym home) for causes they see as more worthy in a lot of ways — going home to rule (the individual collective) and freeing Phyrrah (the individual stranger) — even if that separates them from others and/or puts them more at risk, cause they're just loyal to causes and ideals and self-imposed responsibilities tethered to those concepts like that? I love them
Like they both are like Callum — Ezran is emotionally open and inclined towards vulnerability, like him, which Rayla is not, and Callum and Rayla, esp in arc 1, take on responsibilities that Ezran do not & all their stuff with adoptive dads and communication etc etc. — but they're also more similar to each other than they are to him. More on that here & here + bonus S5 hammering that in more than ever (Rayla going with Ezran's plan in 5x05 anyone?)
Now onto the actual headcanons
Rayla doesn't have a lot of patience for games (cards, chess, etc.) and will be a sore loser/give up when playing with just about anyone else (including Callum) but she can never say no to Ezran over it, and he's so earnest/having such a great time she can never be a total grump when they do play games together
Ezran is the one who primarily took care of her Shadowpaw, for obvious reasons, in the castle stables until she returned, hence why sweetie pie was waiting for her & ready for the Lux Aurea trip
The little archangel lunaris on his backpack was absolutely chosen with her in mind <3
Both Rayla and Ezran possess an abundance of faith in other people, and this is shown best when they're being supportive of or defending one another ("She'll know what to do" —> "He can do this, we have to believe in him" —> "She's alive. And wherever she is, she loves you too")
Rayla weaving a little braid into his hair and having Ezran weave one into hers as well because braids are for love and family, and they are certainly both to one another
This shitpost, which is really just them getting stuck on and continually adding to dumb bits for each other to laugh at
Playing pranks back and forth on Soren and sometimes on Callum
Mostly they just tag team chores like "making sure Callum has eaten and slept and left his study recently" / keeping their favourite mage out of his head
Rayla giving Ezran stealth lessons and Ezran having Rayla bake jelly tarts with him
They always insist on being on the same team when it comes to snowball fights at the Banther Lodge
Ez loves to infodump about certain things and Rayla loves to let him, especially since his trains of thought and ramblings are a bit easier for her to follow than his brother's (most of the time)
Rayla having Ezran teach her how to notice things about illusion animals so she can have an easier time telling the difference (Soren teases her about it and she socks him in the stomach)
This isn't really so much of a headcanon as it is a canon observation but in battle sequences Callum doesn't really usually focus (outside of when he's using said magic to protect Ezran) on getting Ezran away from the danger, instead trusting Rayla to do so — and she always does (1x06, 1x08, 1x09, 2x04, 5x09)
Because she's just his friend and not his subject (or for now, an official member of his council the same way), Ezran finds himself seeking out when he just needs to have dumb kid fun, and Rayla is always down to help him
On that note she's very good at knowing when he needs space vs when he's okay being fussed over (Callum, Opeli) and telling people that even when he may not be able to express it himself because non-verbal times / feeling overwhelmed
Whenever they go on roadtrips in the future, Rayla does her best to bring special snacks around for him (and teach him how to forage, which animals can help him with too)
Eventually when Ezran is a little older, Soren needles him about learning how to defend himself, and Ezran dreads having to hold a sword and initially refuses. But Rayla plops down beside him and talks him through it and reaffirms that they just always want to make sure he's safe, and that's what gets him to come around to the idea
Ezran and Rayla both being physically affectionate people — Rayla slinging her arm along his shoulders, Ezran often grabbing her hand as a sign of support (most often the one she was going to lose to the binding) and squeezing gently, like a reminder that they're both still here and everything's okay and/or going to be alright
Rayla tears up when she realizes that Ezran is finally taller than her, much to his mild annoyance and amusement
Ezran helps Rayla with her proposal to Callum, and does not tell her (or his brother) that Callum is also planning to propose lmao

What We Do in the Shadows: The Campaign (5x04)
I'm in a bit of a Good Omens coma at the moment so pardon me if this is rather a brief review!
Cons:
I guess I wanted a bit more of an understanding of where Lazlo was coming from with his behavior towards the people of Little Antipaxos. It seems like he's trying to impress them at first, but he belittles them and thinks they're all primitive idiots. Then, when they don't warm to him, he immediately goes hostile and tells them to fuck off. This from the man who refuses to set foot back in his homeland because they insulted his beautiful and perfect wife Nadja. I wish we could have seen this play out more from Lazlo's perspective, so we could see maybe that he's feeling insecure or strange about all the time Nadja is spending with these new friends, or something.
Pros:
That said, Lazlo and Nadja are still hilarious, and I did love the resolution, wherein Nadja's new friends think that Lazlo is a figure from their old folktales, a particularly foolish and mean-spirited oaf who brings good luck to those who are near him. That would be funny to see more stories about!
Nandor is trying to find new friends because Guillermo has been pulling away from him, refusing to hang out as much as they normally would. Nandor makes friends with a Jewish man named Alexander from the gym, but when the friendship progresses slower than he would like, he decides to get circumcised just to be more like him. Of course, what with vampire healing, his foreskin grows back immediately, so he ends up just flashing his dick at this guy he barely knows at the gym as an overture of friendship, which does not go well.
I'm living for the strange codependent bizarre nature of Nandor and Guillermo's relationship; they really seem to be leaning into it this season. Guillermo is avoiding him because he doesn't want Nandor to find out about the vampire thing, and Nandor is openly admitting how insecure this makes him feel, as he seeks out alternate companionship. Guillermo giving Nandor a circumcision? Are you kidding? They are the WEIRDEST people on the planet. I love that they get to go to a movie together in the end, even if Nandor is back to being super rude to Guillermo in the process.
And then in our main story, Colin is running for Comptroller, but only because giving speeches at meetings is a great opportunity for a mass feeding. He enlists the help of his old flame the emotion vampire Evie, who poses as his wife for his campaign. However, things take an interesting turn when a council of Energy Vampires declares that Colin needs to actually win, because his opponent wants to streamline government bureaucracy and do away with all the extra forms, which is the whole lifeblood of energy vampire kind! Colin doesn't want this, so he "accidentally" flashes and moons a bunch of voters on a Zoom call, meaning he has to drop out of the race. Evie takes over and wins on write-in votes, and ends their relationship.
I mean, Colin has one bit, and he does it really well, and it's almost always extremely funny. Meeting a bunch of other energy vampires and seeing them all play off each other was the best kind of comedic torture. The whole bit about going to the home screen and finding settings on the phone to silence alerts... I could feel my brain leaking out of my nose. I also love that Evie's gimmick is a variation. While Colin aims to bore you to death, Evie aims to depress you to death with her sad tales of woe. It's fun to see those two different vibes bounce off each other.
So there you go! A fun installment. I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop with Guillermo's big transformation, but it's a fun ride to get there!

The Winchesters: Back to the Garden?
Is this, SPNWin 1x02 Teach the Children Well.
Tumblr media
really heading for this? SPN 4x03 In the Beginning
Tumblr media
The tone and colour palette of The Winchesters, which is Scooby-Doo in golden sepia is, thus far, significantly removed from the dark palette and profound horror of early Supernatural.
This is partly because the CW wants its programmes to be advertising friendly for its youth demographic and it has ideas about what that looks like. We know that Supernatural was an anomaly, and that the network told SPN to move away from its early (gorgeous) darker cinematography,.
But, the story-telling horror remained. And that horror was driven significantly by the struggle with fate.
If we are in Universe One (the SPN universe) then we already know John and Mary’s fates.
As Lucifer said in 5x04 The End: “Whatever you do, you will always end up... here. No matter what choices you make, whatever details you alter, *we* will always end up... here.”
But that would be hopeless, right? To simply be heading to SPN 4x03 In the Beginning, when Cas takes Dean back in time, but Dean is unable to prevent the events that lead to Mary, desperate on the road at night, kissing her own father Samuel on the mouth  (possessed by Azazel), to seal the demon deal that damns Sam to become Lucifer’s vessel, while John Winchester’s lifeless body  lies between them...
This story, The Winchesters, doesn’t feel like a dark-character-arc story, a fall-from-grace story, about how Mary ended up dead and John ended up neglecting their kids.
Robbie Thompson wrote SPN 10x11 There’s No Place Like Home and the colour palette of Oz (an Alternative Universe) really reminds me of The Winchesters:
Tumblr media
I’m guessing many SPN fans are missing the traumatic text of SPN.
I’m missing it too, and The Winchesters feels... confusing.... for that reason.
Trauma can be addictive, after all.
Is The Winchesters intended to be a redemptive text, a healing text, by contrast?
I mean, like Sam and Dean, The Winchesters Scoobies are carrying trauma. John is suffering from Vietnam War PTSD, given he saw his friend Murph get blown up. Mary has been traumatised by her childhood as a hunter, and the death of her beloved cousin Maggie on a hunt. Lata is estranged from her family and has lied to her friends that her parents are dead. Carlos’ family (parents and brother) were killed by a ghoul, which is how he got into hunting. Ada has already been traumatised by demon possession and seems to be going a bit dark with her bonsai tree as demon trap.
But somehow, they’re... reaching out to each other, supporting each other, talking about their feelings?!?!?!
Particularly given the 60s and 70s soundtrack, I’m really hearing Joni Mitchell’s Woodstock:
“I came upon a child of God He was walking along the road And I asked him where are you going And this he told me I'm going on down to Yasgur's farm * I'm going to join in a rock 'n' roll band I'm going to camp out on the land I'm going to try an' get my soul free We are stardust We are golden And we've got to get ourselves Back to the garden Then can I walk beside you I have come here to lose the smog And I feel to be a cog in something turning Well maybe it is just the time of year Or maybe it's the time of man I don't know who I am But you know life is for learning We are stardust We are golden And we've got to get ourselves Back to the garden By the time we got to Woodstock We were half a million strong And everywhere there was song and celebration And I dreamed I saw the bombers Riding shotgun in the sky And they were turning into butterflies Above our nation We are stardust Billion year old carbon We are golden Caught in the devil's bargain And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden”
Some kind of return to Paradise (but not the fakery of Heaven) guided by Holy Ghost narrator Dean?
To a place where “Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt”? (Slaughterhouse 5 - Vonnegut).
I can sense that the SPN fandom is a bit muted about The Winchesters and there’s some not-great news about its survival coming out of the CW already:
https://deadline.com/2022/11/the-winchesters-amp-walker-independence-no-back-orders-cw-cutbacks-season-2-canceled-renewed-1235159619/
A shame, because there’s something really intriguing about a redemptive after-vision for Supernatatural from Robbie, Jensen and Daneel, with a Vonnegut twist - the promise of healing for the traumatised and I’d like to find out where the story is going.
