Bato braiding Katara's hair after Kya died because Hakoda doesn't know how aaa
Yes !!! Exactly this !!! He's had enough experience with braiding his own hair that braiding Katara's becomes second nature. Soon enough, Katara can't really remember what it felt like when her mother braided her hair. It's bittersweet when she realizes Bato was there for her at that point in time. (Also Hakoda is like, the expert on wolfstail's. braids? He's not that great I promise.)

How do you think Kanna reacted to Hakoda and Bato adopting Aang, Toph, and Zuko?
She honestly is not surprised when she sees Bato has adopted Aang Toph and Zuko. She knows he has a record for being a bit of a surrogate father for a lot of the young children in the village and for that, she isn’t surprised to see either of those three around Bato at any given point (or Toph practically glued to his side when they leave meetings). What surprises the hell out of her is when Hakoda seems to have adopted these children who absolutely are not his own. She knows Hakoda to be a traditionally possessive person over his family. What’s his is his and what isn’t his will not be his. That’s what she thought him to be for a long while. But when she finds Zuko embracing Hakoda after a long day of meetings and such, when she sees Hakoda and Aang out fishing and overhears some horrible dad jokes from him, and when he spots Toph timidly standing by him and him accepting it, all the same, she realizes that her son loves all those that need it. And these three kids, these three kids who have been hurt far too many times in their short lives, definitely deserve the love Hakoda can give them and she is nothing other than proud. (Of course, when she sees the two of them out with the kids together she can’t deny how much of a family they look like and never fails to remind them of that fact.)

Recently one of my favourite fanfic tropes has been hakoda not knowing which one of his kids zuko is dating, and if you throw bakoda into the mix, bato takes the chance to mess with him. "zuko and sokka are close arent they bato?" "mhm yeah they're cute together" "wheres katara going?" "on her date with zuko" "wh"
The best part is that Bato probably knows who’s with Zuko. He’s just like, come on koda you can’t be serious. Zuko is with ____ and Hakoda is just a blubbering mess hahaskjdfhakjsdfhakjdh he doesn’t know how to react because how the hell was he fooled by both of his menacing children.

Bato/Kya/Hakoda thought: They don't really know who the biological father of the kids are until they get a little older. With Sokka it's obvious he's Hakoda's son. Katara isn't as obvious since she takes after Kya appearance wise. Still, they kinda assume she's Hakoda's.... Until she ends up taller than both Sokka and Hakoda.
OMG WHY IS THIS SO FUNNY AJAHSAKDJFHASDJFAKSJDFH KATARA USING SOKKA AS AN ELBOW REST IS SO FUCKING FUNNY AHAHAHSDKFJSAKDJFHAKSJD but yes yes yes omg and it would explain why she’s a bit more deadpan (and why she absolutely despises Hakoda and Sokka’s taste in humor). I love this so much omg

Okay, i read your Azula redemption thingy and now I'm in tears imagining Azula visiting the Southern Water tribe and theres snow, and ice and some really cute animals and Azula has never seen northern lights and she's absolutely mesmerized. Kiyi comes and sits with her (all three siblings are there and Iroh is acting Fire Lord at the moment) and the two are just watching the sky and Azula feels at peace. Then there's Bakoda watching them as Zuko joins his sisters because they deserve happiness dang it! (Can i send more of these?)
Azula visiting the southern water tribe is now incredibly important to me. Hakoda enjoys hers and Zuko's visits so much hehe and Bato gets time to talk with Zuko about his progress healing his wounds !! Please do send more of these I am actually now fully on the azula redemption arc train:) I jus

Alright, hear me out! What if Hakoda adopts Azula too? Like, he sees this mentally unstable girl (the same age as his own daughter-) that's grown up without ANY parental love and is so, so very broken- and he adopts her. It doesn't go fast by any means, but he sists and talks to her, make sure she has food and stuff like that. It's a long and hard road but it's oh so worth it when he sees a genuine child like smile on her face. (His kids don't understand, but Bato does)
It’s good too becaues I imagine he’s fucking terrified of her. Hell, Bato probably tries to talk him out of it so many times (he’s so scared Hakoda might get hurt. He’s always thinking of the worst case scenario and this one. With a powerful firebender who isn’t mentally stable? He’s fucking terrified) but Hakoda is persistent. He reassures Bato that someone will be there with him when he visits her. And azula is so fucking resistent. She’s still seeing the image of her mother, taunting her. And suddenly there’s this man she’s never seen before in her life coming to sit with her. To say nothing but simply sit and offer her whatever food he has with her. It takes so long. It takes so damn long but eventually she stops trying to fight his attempts at talking. She doesn’t speak. Hakoda does most of the talking really. He talks about Zuko and Iroh mostly. How they’re doing and Azula feels her heart tug at the fact that her brother and uncle have been living their lives without her. But Hakoda reassures her they’re both very worried. (And when Hakoda sees that she’s not going to kill anyone that steps near her Iroh and Zuko begin to make more visits to her). Soon enough, she starts talking. Her voice is scratchy and she sounds unsure. She’s never talked about herself in this light. She’s never talked about her feelings, about how badly her mother affected her, her father affected her, mai and ty lee’s betrayal affected her. And this time Hakoda listens. He shows up with some of Iroh’s tea and some fireflakes and he listens. He listens to her. Eventually they start having productive conversations. He starts to take on a more father-like figure in how he speaks with her and Azula is so scared again because does he have an agenda and she asks as such. he does not. She finds out and lets her guard down around him a bit more. She’s so comfortably around him at this point that the first time she cries in front of him, Hakoda is shocked. He doesn’t reach to hug her, unsure of how she would react, but he’s there. He reaches a hand into her personal space so she knows he’s there. Soon enough she finds his embrace comfortaing and constantly finds herself crying into his chest. Hakoda is blown out of his mind at this. And Bato is so damn proud of him. Because he never suspected Hakoda would be able to do this. It takes a lot of talking, a lot of conversations: with Zuko, with Iroh, with Ursa, [one with Ozai that Hakoda knows shouldn’t happen but recognizes it has to] but eventually Azula finds the closure she needed. And it’s actually the first time Zuko brings Kiyi to a visit, she’s about 11 or 12 here, that Hakoda spots a real smile on Azula’s face. A childlike smile that only being around family can bring forth and as quick as it’s there, Azula turns to Hakoda, unsure if she should be this happy. He smiles encouragingly and she continues to engage with Kiyi and Zuko in a lighthearted manner. Hakoda smiles proudly. His heart swelling as if she were his own kid and it’s not until he’s back with Bato that he says okay don’t be alarmed. But I think I adopted another kid. And Bato is like don’t you think I knew that already? And Bato is also smiling at Hakoda because the look on his face, that hidden pride that he did something good for another kid, is there and he’s so happy that Hakoda is happy about this. It’s what he deserves :) DADKODA FTW
also i am so sorry this got so long as you can see I got carried away. and I assumed that kiyi is like 6 or 7 when she first appears in the search!

OK but consider, after the burn Hakoda has to do Bato's hair because reaching that high is too painful and Bato secretly loves it but will never admit how much he enjoys Hakoda's hands in his hair
anon,,, anon anon anon,,, i swear I feel like you reached into my brain and pulled out the most random cart on the train of thought titled: atla + hair. I absolutely a d o r e everything about this and if i proceed to write a fic on it, well you were the inspiration and you're amazing for it
Things I have to include:
-not established relationship but post/war
-Bato is taking the necessary medical steps to ensure that his burned skin doesn't experience any worsening or that his muscles don't fully give out on him
-Hakoda is helping Bato through it all. He gets a renewed sense of duty from helping Bato. For a while it was Bato helping Hakoda but now,,, now Hakoda had to step up
-One morning Hakoda is pulling Bato's hair into it's wolfs tail and bato sighs so contented that Hakoda believes for a moment that he did something wrong.
-Of course Bato is fine and struggles to cover up the reason he responded that way. Luckily for him, it works.
-It takes a few weeks but one day, Hakoda and Bato are going over trade routes to verify for the Northern Water Tribe and Bato is sitting in the head chief's chair and Hakoda is circling the desk and it takes a moment but suddenly hakoda is running his hands along Bato's scalp and preparing to braid the hair into a few plaits into his hair.
-Bato is taken completely by surprise and lets out a soft moan of pleasure and hakoda keeps going.
-"Okay so you're either in love with me or I have been reading this wrong the whole time" and okay Bato did not expect Hakoda to be the one to realize his feelings first.
-In the end, Bato ends up doing Hakoda's hair because it's easier to do hakoda's hair when he's sitting down instead of doing his own.
-superior hairstyles🌟

Imagine Azula meeting Pakku and no one is prepared for her calling out his sexist BS. Like, she does not like him at all, and is firmly on "Pakku is an a**hole territory". Hakoda and Bato LOVES it and Hakoda is such a proud dad™ when Azula is advocating for women to learn waterbending and not just healing (there's no way he dropped yeara of sexism in the time between Katara kicking his ass and him meeting them again). Kanna is just sitting there with a smile as Pakku is once again getting ripped a new one by a tiny teenage girl.
Maybe this is what puts Katara and Azula in a position where they agree on something. Because usually they’re doing things for the other’s sake but this.. this is something they are wholeheartedly in agreement over. And Bato and Hakoda are just so fucking proud. Hakoda especially because it’s really like these two are his own kids who are clearly advocating against sexist ideas that weren’t as widespread in the south. This also taught him a lot about dismantling the sexist notions that do exist in the SWT (women in the house men doing the work) and he definitely began to change his own way of thinking. Pakku however, fuck him and his sexist ideals. And Katara and Azula make sure to let him know that his ideals are shit and by extension he’s a shitty person :)

Hakoda being really "welcome to the family" to whomever is dating his kids (i was thinking Zukka but if you're against it that's cool) and then the next day he wakes up in an ice cave tied to a chair with Bato glairing them down
Oh yeah! In the end I think Hakoda would be the more accepting of his kids' S/O's because he knows Bato is the one in charge of the shovel talks. I love to think of them as good guy/bad guy in the scenario? Yeah I like to think Zuko, in the end, is actually terrified of Bato even if he never shows it around the family. But deep down, he never ever wants to be the last person in the room with Bato. Hakoda obviously picks up on it and he constantly scolds Bato for scaring the poor kid but Bato never lets up and takes pride in the fact that he has that powerful. Of c o u r s e ! Bato loves Zuko and thinks he's more than worthy to be with Sokka. Bato is Bato though and sure he may let his true thoughts of Zuko slip a few times, he still holds his cool persona. He's unmoving like that.

At some point after unofficially adopting the entire gaang, Hakoda starts responding to "dad" even if it's not Katara or Sokka saying it. After a little longer, Bato starts doing that too. Sometimes Toph will scream "DAD!" to see who answers the fastest.
Oh there comes a time where Hakoda just stops replying when Toph calls for “Dad” bc more often than not, she really means Bato. I am on the Toph as Bato’s adopted child train okay!! And I am not coming off anytime soon!!

okay so consider Zuko helping Bato look after his burn and stop it from getting infected etc etc but them spending a lot of time together and talking about Hakoda and Sokka a lot and suddenly both realising they’re in love with them
Hehehe you know what, I love it! But I’m a sucker so i gotta say, give me canon bakoda and Bato is like,, helping Zuko realize his feelings for Sokka as they continue to meet to treat Bato’s burns. Of course in the process, Bato doesn’t realize that it’s actually him that’s adopted Zuko as his own and essentially, through helping Zuko realize his feelings, kind of relives how he realized he was in love with Hakoda. It’s a wonderful sight and it makes Bato sappier than usual (for which Hakoda teases him relentlessly) but it doesn’t matter because Zuko is happy. And Sokka makes him happy. And that’s all that matters.

Imagine Katara and Sokka both holding one arm each with Zuko in between them and marches up to Hakoda after learning just how shi**y Ozai is and being like "Dad, this is yours and Bato's new son."
THIS IS SO FUNNY OMG??? Because Zuko is probably fighting them on it so he's like No no your dad already has you two plus I don't want to be a burden and Katara's glare is deadly so he shuts up and lets them drag him to the Chief's igloo where Hakoda and Bato are standing, preparing to leave. Zuko is freezing and Katara pushes him toward the door. Dads, your new son, Zuko. Zuko, your new dads and Zuko probably wants to kick Sokka in his chins for saying that but in no time Hakoda and Bato are ushering him inside and making sure he's warm. Bato sends a concerned glance toward Sokka and Katara who brush him off in favor of leaving Zuko to his new parents.

Can we talk about Bakoda reacting to the fact that Katara actually threatened to kill Zuko?? Like, she straight up said she'd kill him if he did something to Aang
Hakoda is like woah there. I know they've both had to kill people in war but I dont ever think they got used to the fact that they were taking a life? So they try to explain to her the magnitude of what she wanted to do and it takes a second but she gets it. Plus she'd never kill Zuko now so they have to take it as a win.

*rattles cup* spare hc’s miss?
I haven’t been bouncing around ideas about bakoda in a hot second anon but some that I could think of:
- Thinking about Bato being worried whenever Hakoda has to handle business away from the SWT by himself. The worry is usually quelled by letters but Bato isn’t comfortable until Hakoda is back with him
- Leading the SWT, after the war, is so difficult for Hakoda that he actually ends up appointing Bato as his second in charge which was a decision he was strictly advised to not make but he did it anyway.
- Gosh speaking of disobeying rules, it’s Hakoda’s favorite thing to do. When they were teens, Kanna would often find Hakoda and Bato in places in the village they were absolutely not supposed to be in.
- This one time, Hakoda dared Bato to see if he would be able to last five minutes with a part of his body in the coldest body of water near their village. You bet Bato did it too but when Kanna found them, oh they weren’t too lucky after that.
- Bato definitely spent way too much time over at Hakoda’s place when he was younger but Hakoda’s dad was almost like a father to him so there was really nothing to lose.
- I can’t remember if I said this one already but Katara is probably far closer to Bato than she is to Hakoda. Probably because Bato reminds her a lot of her mother in how he reacts to and responds to Hakoda but what she doesn’t know is that Kya was just as quippy and reckless as the rest of them were.
Those are some I can think of !! Hope you liked these !!

Imagine ,,, Hakoda meeting up with the warden from the boiling rock randomly in one of his trips to the Fire Nation and he'd act all smug over the fact that the record of no prison breaks was destroyed by him and three KIDS
He’d make a sly comment like “whoops don’t trip on that” and Sokka Suki and Zuko are just dying of laughter (Zuko not as much bc professionalism but the sentiment is there) and Bato is there bc he has to be and he’s like what the hell? AND IT’S SO FUCKING FUNNY BECAUSE THEY BROKE THAT DAMN RECORD THEMSELVES
