i saw some people say ed and zheng are master strategists while stede is just some guy with ridiculous luck, but i think that's unfair. sure stede's ideas are insane, but they fit the looney tunes ass universe of ofmd perfectly. they're mostly well-thought-out, well-executed and they showcase stede's strengths and growth! so allow me to talk about them:

1- ghost of the forest - 1x02

a fuckery™ before stede even knows what a fuckery™ is! this is amateurish and stupid in every way. he's not even threatening izzy with a real dagger-- that's a letter opener. does izzy actually believe that stede has a huge crew hiding behind the bushes? doubt it! but this weird little act is enough to establish stede as a (ridiculous) pirate figure to the legendary izzy hands and to accomplish his goal of taking a hostage back

2- lighthouse - 1x04

imagine coming up with the exact same idea at the exact same time as the most brilliant tactician of the seven seas! we don't know who came up with which parts of the plan (honestly it was probably mostly ed) but this is still bloody impressive

3- stark revelations - 1x05

stede's first big success! he uses his knowledge of the aristocratic world to get a shipful of rich assholes to destroy each other, but he's also showcasing what sets him apart from them: this plan only comes to fruition because stede talks to frenchie, olu and abshir as equals. as people he can learn from, as sources of inspiration

4- duel with izzy - 1x06

this one was absolutely unhinged, but its success was far from dumb luck. only stede could think of using a brazillian cherry wood mast and ed's weird stabbing lesson to win a duel, and that's what makes this plan so undeniably stede and brilliant

5- faking his death - 1x10

i love that he just had to "die" in the most dramatic way possible. a heroic fight (tiger), a realistic accident (carriage) and the most cartoony death in the book (piano)... not only is his triple-death able to convince everyone in barbados that he's dead for good, it also allows him to have closure with his family. it's filled with stede's ridiculous unique flair, but it's designed to be a fuckery™ through and through. ed would be SO proud

6- stealing jackie's indigo dye - 2x01

quick little stealth mission. did ricky manipulate stede into trying this out? sure. did ricky also ruin it? absolutely. but it was working until then! the swede isn't part of stede's crew at this point, but his respect for stede is what gets him to cooperate and risk his relationship with his beautiful wife. also, it's thanks to his love for fine things that stede immediately recognizes the value of "blue dirt"

7- prison break - 2x03

in my eyes no scene depicts stede's growth better than this one. knocking zheng's entire crew out with tea is the most stede thing out there, and this plan uses the cherry wood mast as well! this plan relies on stede's (unrealistic) tea knowledge, overly-fancy ship and ability to coordinate his crew. what makes it breathtaking is that he secretly sets this plan into motion while actively mourning the "death" of the love of his life. he's putting his life on the line to rescue ed's "killers" because he's emotionally mature enough to look at things from their perspective and forgive them

8- inciting a mutiny - 2x06

yet another brilliant plan that could only be executed by stede. this entire episode revolves around his idea of "turning poison into positivity" and here he, well, fights poison with positivity. stede captains his pirates with respect and care (best he can) which just so happens to be the opposite of ned. he exploits this and gently gets ned's crew to turn on him. he singlehandedly saves himself and his entire crew from a notorious pirate! oh he also literally invents walking the plank right after this

9- "it's only suicide if we die" - 2x08

okay, yes, this one didn't go that well (sorry iz). but it's not like ed, zheng or anyone else had any other ideas! stede's weird suicide mission, for the most part, worked. they needed to get through british soldiers to reach their ship and they did exactly that. if only they'd remembered to check if ricky had his gun... oh well, you live and you learn

sure, ed and zheng are legends and stede is a silly newbie with wild luck. but he's also quick-witted, creative, confident and brave! he's a damn good captain and he deserves to be recognized as a good strategist!

Ok, so this is not a screed against people posting about or hoping for Izzy's return - whether in joking denial or genuine belief. Like if that's what makes you feel better after the finale, you are entitled to all the posts, fix-it fics, etc.

But.

I really want to push back on this idea that it's this obvious thing canon is supporting.

This is not another Lucius situation. Like. It's just not.

Look, when Lucius was "killed" at the end of S1, it was a joke everyone was in on. He got tossed over the side of the ship with a little "fwoop" and a literal shoe spinning in the air. His "offscreen death" was confirmed by a guy who could not have known what happened after he fell. Of course he was alive.

Lucius's fake-out was so successful because it engaged with the genre of the show in a way that rewarded the audience for buying into the suspension of disbelief.

Izzy's death... doesn't.

Izzy dies from a stray bullet in a shot that you might miss on first watch. He's not doing anything important, or protecting anyone. It's random. They reveal he's injured and then make it back to the ship, only for him to give a dramatic deathbed speech. He dies on screen, and they immediately cut to his funeral.

This isn't the kind of death that fits with OFMD's universe. They tried to borrow a scene from Black Sails or something and just sanded down its edges. Killing a character in the main cast just because "it's a pirate show"? Really? The daring escape plan is real and dangerous and life-threatening in the same episode where Auntie survives an explosion, and we watched Zheng and Edward casually massacre their way through a dozen soldiers each?

I'm buying into the suspension of disbelief that our ragtag crew can escape scott-free because it's a silly romcom about a muppet guy where "things always have a way of working out in the end", and then the show looks me dead in the eye and says "Actually, no, this time the consequences are real. Sorry."

A bird landing on a grave doesn't change that?

Like... in Pirates of the Caribbean they can resurrect Barbossa from the dead like it's nothing because some of the first worldbuilding elements they introduce are a compass that points at what you most desire and gold that curses you into an undead existence. Of course necromancy exists.

OFMD had a guy turn into a seagull behind a tree for plausible deniability, a cursed coat rationalized as a peanut allergy, and the gravy basket which took place wholly in Edward's head. Resurrection would be a hell of a reach. Even if they did open S3 with it, it would be a retcon of Izzy's death, not a reveal that we all could have predicted.

Which does mean that pointing to vague tweets from the crew or likes of Witch!Buttons posts and pushing the idea "Look - they're telling us he'll be back!" leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Like... it's not set up as an inside joke this time. And especially if they don't get renewed - and they certainly seem worried - they should not get credited for leaving this particular beat "open" and just being thwarted by MAX or whatever.

Izzy dying right then, as shown on screen, was unambiguously their final beat.

The Hues in Carmy's mind

I noticed the different colors in Carmy's mind during his panic attack. I wanted to explore that based on color theory in film. Hopefully, you will notice the difference colors in Carmy's memory since it's very muted and hard to tell at times..

Yellow

Yellow can represent happiness, obsession insecurity, egoism, and madness.

Looking back at the original hues in episode 6, it has more of an orange tint (orange represents memories and nostalgia.) In Carmy's memory, however, his family represents madness and illness.

Pink

Claire has more of a yellow green hue in the original episodes 2x05. But in Carmys mind her hue is pink. Pinks represent romance, innocence, childlike romance, and playfulness (notice the gif above and the yellow bleeding into the pink)

Carmy could be forcing himself to see Claire in a romantic light, but such an attempt to see her this way fails to bring him peace.

Blue

Blues can represent peace, fulfillment, confidence, trust, and unions on the positive. But it's darker shades can also evoke isolation, coldness, and sadness.

I see this as Carmy trying to see Claire in a feeling similar to Sydney. There's a reoccurring color with Syd and Carmy of reds and blues. The light blue represents how Carmy sees Syd - her hue matches carmy in the present as he catches his breath. She's the only memory that's in the now. She brings a sense of peace to the audience and Carmy.

This is a short analysis! There's a post by @moments-on-film1 of sydneys red and blue scarves. Another post I want to mention is by @cosmic-light-fics we discussed the painting and they had brilliant commentary on the reds and blues in the painting in episode 2x08 and 2x10.

As a bonus on color theory, this also represents the red and blues in Carmy & Syd's world.

The first gif gives a soft blue hue. Check out the red and blue fence.

What does red represent? Red represents fire, passion, aggression, heat, & love. Remember blue can represent peace, fulfillment, union, coldness, isolation, and sadness. Carmy and Syd were in a darker blue hue for the end of the second season.

Could this mean that Carmy not only sees Sydney in a peaceful way but also has a passion and fire for Sydney? The darker blues for season 2 give ominous foreshadowing for Syd and Carmy.

i was thinking about lanfear telling rand that the word "sorry" will lose all meaning if he keeps saying it, and out of curiosity i searched all the episode transcripts to see how often rand says sorry. i found that, just looking at total instances of the word and not specific characters, there's usually 1-4 "sorry"s per episode. got to 2x08 and went "damn 13 'sorry's in this episode?? what happened here?????" and i clicked along and realized it was because of mat and the stabbening 😭😭

anyway here's a good old-fashioned Chart Of Inane And Useless WOT Data!

my statistician's notes:

i only searched for the word "sorry", so this does not capture other ways of apologizing or expressing regret/guilt

i excluded all "sorry"s said to mean "what did you say?" rather than "i'm apologizing", and all "sorry"s which i deemed insincere (liandrin had a few of those lmao, and also things like elayne jokingly saying "sorry" after egwene says her homemade moonshine is very strong - some subjectivity here about what i considered sincere or not)

i did not include minor characters or characters who only said a sincere "sorry" once

repetitive "sorry"s were counted individually, and this accounts for most of our heavy-hitters: liandrin says "sorry" 5x after giving her son that herb and mat says "sorry" 7x after stabbing rand

rand has a few double "sorry"s, but never more than 2 in one sentence/exchange. so his 14 are because he really does say "sorry" a lot! 6 times in s1 and 8 times in s2

the absolute only time moiraine says "sorry" in the entire show so far is when she's pretending to be a frightened noblewoman with the whitecloaks in 1x02. siuan has never said it. queen shit.

The tethering ceremony is meant to happen on the spring equinox. Which in 2017, was on March 20. So, I'm think 4x11 and 4×12 take place right around then. Cause we knew the equinox was getting close and the Library needed to be tethered as soon as possible.

4x06 - 4x12

February 2017 - March 2017

4x06 "And the Graves of Time" is the episode in which Nicole is stabbed by Rasputin and Jenkins sacrifices his immortality to save her. At the beginning of the episode, Jenkins states that the equinox is 41 days away. Putting the episodes events in roughly early February 2017. Going back a little further to 4x03, we know that happens in December 2016 because it's a Christmas episode.

1x01 - 2x01

Going back futher, the opening of 2x01 reveals that 1x01 happened 9 months ago. And in 2x05 we learn that 1x10 was 4 months ago. We also know that the LiTs have been working separately for about 3 months between 1x10 and 2x01. Leaving about a month between 2x01 and 2x05.
