quinns nhl debut is tonight, and you’re being dragged along by your mother. you’re not gonna deny a trip to vancouver, so might as well go. her and ellen have been best friends for forever, so you grew up alongside the hughes family. although you’ve lived in canada for all of your life, the hughes family was still a major part of your life even while they were living in the united states. but when they moved to canada, you were estatic.

you and quinn are the same age, so you two bonded more than anyone. unfortunately, when quinn left for michigan, your heart went with him. not only is he your best friend, he’s also more than that. he’s your first love, but he just doesn’t know it. you two have always been a little more than friends, and everyone just assumed you two are bound to get married.

that was until college rolled around.

when quinn was in michigan, he basically just stopped speaking to you. sure, when he came to visit in canada for the holidays you two spoke and acted as if nothing had changed, but you both knew things were weird now. part of your heart shattered seeing quinn so far away with little contact. unfortunately when you stopped texting first, that lead to no texting at all. you’ve collectively decided to avoid quinn the best you can, and it’s been working. that’s until your mom and ellen decided to drag you to his debut.

you’re sat in the stands with a blue jersey loosely hanging off your body, and the crowd is screaming loudly as the boy appears on the ice. his lap begins, and ellen is cheering louder than anyone in the building. a small smile forms on your lips as quinn skates around the ice, but you quickly purse them.

“you’ve gotta admit y/n, you’re proud of him,” your mom nudges you.

“i mean yeah, we’ve talked about this day for years, but i just wish things weren’t the way they are,” you shrug while watching the boy shoot loose pucks into the net, as his debut lap comes to an end.

eventually the game finishes, and you’re all excited to see quinn. he comes out with a big grin on his face, but it drops when he see’s you. after hugging everyone else, he pulls you into a very very loose hug.

“y/n, hey,” he awkwardly smiles

“hi quinn, congrats,” you half smile before immediately walking away.

at dinner, you and quinn are accidentally placed across from each other at the table. at this point everyone knows about your falling out with quinn, but no one knows just exactly what happened. not even you two. you avoid eye contact with quinn all night, but on the way out of the resturant he stops you. “y/n, thank you so much for coming. it means a lot,”

“yeah don’t feel special my mom made me come,” you half jokingly say. you’re both uncomfortable and upset, so the last thing you want is to talk to the boy who unknowingly broke your heart. but you don’t want to be overly forward with your feelings, so sarcasm is what’s best in this situation.

“mhm sure. i saw you smiling and clapping during my lap,” he chuckles nervously.

“yeah yeah whatever quinn. nice finally talking to you for once,” you forcefully smile and turn around. suddenly his hand on your shoulder stops you.

“what? what’s that supposed to mean?”

“are you serious quinn? you don’t even realize that you just straight up stopped talking to me? we haven’t talked in months quinn! you give me a few of your hoodies before you leave for michigan then just ditch me? we almost kissed that summer, quinn!” you quietly yell at the boy, trying not to draw the attention of everyone else in the parking lot.

“i just, i don’t- fuck y/n. there’s no excuse for what i did, but i really just thought you didn’t feel the same. you were so flirty with that guy the summer before i left, so i thought it was best to leave things in ontario,” he sighs while rubbing a hand through his hair.

“i’ve been waiting and waiting for things to go back to how they were, but nothing ever did. you’re in vancouver doing god knows what with god knows who, while i’m here mourning a friendship that you clearly don’t care about! hell quinn, we’ve always been more than friends and you know that!”

“oh will you just shut up,” he groans before kissing your lips. you’re taken back by his forwardness but kiss him back as soon as you realize what’s going on.

“i’m sorry i left us behind when i moved, but i promise it meant so much more than you know. i miss you, y/n/n.”

“i miss you too quinny.”

The Strange Disappearance of Runaway Justin Pollari

In 2001, 14 year old Justin Pollari ran away from his home in Hilton Beach, Ontario, Canada. He has never been seen since.

Many youth run away from home, but most are found soon after. In 2018, 92% of missing children in Canada were found within one week.

Justin's photo was shown a lot. Posters all across Canada were put on bulletin boards, transport trucks, ect. Some believe that if the authorities took the case more seriously earlier on, Justin would have been found. Many do not take runaways seriously at first, as they think they will make contact with loved ones shortly.

Justin Pollari was born on January 31, 1987. His parents divorced when he was a baby, and he was living with his father, John and stepmother, Janis McLeod at the time of his disappearance. He had dyed black hair that he would wear in a Mohawk. Justin had two earrings in his left ear. He was known as a troubled child, never doing well in school and struggled with his parents divorce.

On December 7, 2001, Justin came home upset. He had been in a fight and his lip was cut. It was reported that he had admitted to being in this fight, however he later denied it. He was very angry and it was reported that he had even lunged at his father.

A couple hours later, Justin left the house with his skateboard and backpack that had a few clothes in it. He was wearing dark blue or black baggy pants, a dark blue or black hooded sweater, and a black toque over his 6 inch Mohawk. He had red or burgundy running shoes on.

Justin had run away from home one other time, but had gone to a friends house and returned the next day. It is unclear why he left when he did and wanted to runaway, if that was even the plan.

In the first few years, many sightings of Justin were reported. Some claimed to have seen him in a shelter in Toronto. Another person said someone matching Justin's description introduced himself as "J."

Another theory speculates he could've went to Michigan, as Hilton Beach is extremely close to the U.S. border.

Justin's family believes he was going towards Toronto. His parents and grandparents made several trips up to Toronto (a 7 hour drive for them), to look for their missing son and grandson. They went to homeless shelters, asked homeless youth, and looked through the streets.

In 2003, Justin's parents (father and stepmother) expressed frustration, stating that the shelter system makes it somewhat easy for youth to live. They think Justin was lured in by the "glamour" of Toronto street living.

A gas station attendant in Sault Ste. Marie, believed to have seen Justin get into a Quik X truck around the time he disappeared. This sighting was not reported until mid 2005, almost 4 years later.

On May 16, 2005, Justin's case was reopened by the East Algoma O.P.P. with the Criminal Investigation Branch. A huge search was completed, with a canine unit and forensics.

After 4 days, the search led to nothing.

Justin' family kept a briefcase full of photos of Justin that they would hand out during searches. They also had letters and drawings he left, that they had not discovered until after he disappeared. Three months before the disappearance, Justin had wrote to his grade 9 teacher a letter that said,

"I really hate school and the government. At class I plan on trying until I get sick of it, then I'll give up and drop out when I'm 16."

It has been reported that most youth who runaway and are at risk do so because of troubles at/with school, being bullied, having difficulty making friends, or having major life changes such as divorce, moving, or changing schools. Most runaways do not perform well in school and are seen as troublesome to teachers and peers according to the stats.

Many people believe Justin is deceased, explaining why he has been missing for over 22 years. Others think Justin made it to Toronto, or another big city and has been living homeless. Locals think more people know what happened to Justin but are not speaking out.

In 2018, Justin's case was again reopened. There are age progression photos of him available. He would be 37 years old today.

Justin's nickname was "Woody." He was listed as being 5'11 and weighing around 140 pounds. He has blue eyes and a dimple in his chin. He wore his hair in a 6 inch Mohawk style which may be dyed black or blonde. He had two earrings in his left ear and wore heavy chain necklaces.

He may have been wearing a wooden name tag with the inscription "Woody." He was an avid skateboarder and may have been hanging around skate parks. He may go by the nickname "Joe."

I RARELY see people tackle potential parents for Daiya and Mondo, so here they are!

I imagine Cassie met Hideo when she was in high school, but Hideo was a lot older than her. Regardless of that they hit it off fairly well, but things started to sour once Daiya was born. Hideo was a more distant father and refused to run his family's motor business beyond riding a motorcycle, so he refused to take any jobs while Cassie was left jumping from position to position. Despite that, I think Daiya still really looked up to Hideo as this cool mysterious figure. Whenever they'd talk it'd be about manly shit. And bikes. So it was all the more traumatizing when he fucked off a few months into Cassie's second pregnancy. Daiya was 7. I picked the name Hideo because its meanings both fit him, and are DEEPLY ironic (excellent, fine/outstanding, hero, manly, husband, and man). It was just too perfect.

Cassie's dad studied abroad in Canada for a while, and while he was there he met the woman who would be his wife. She didn't have much family left in Canada, so they moved back to Japan shortly after Cassie turned 3. I think their relationship was far more loving and they both gave Cassie their all, but they pressured her in her schoolwork and her relationships, and that began to dominate over their love for her. I think Hideo led them to disown her due to the path she went down after meeting him. She was starting to reach her boiling point with him, but after he left, she couldn’t take it anymore. It was the straw that broke the camel's back, and Cassie began to take it out onto Daiya shortly after Mondo was born in a combination of anger and stress. She was never violent with him and broke down crying more often than not, but she still heavily pressured Daiya into becoming a better man than Hideo was and getting frustrated whenever he or his interests were mentioned.

Daiya ran away when he was only around 12, and Mondo was 4. It was impulsive and remained incredibly complicated until he died. A lot of Hideo and Cassie's personality still stuck with Daiya despite everything, and some of their teachings were passed down to Mondo (Did I base most of Cassie and Hideo on that one line of dialogue in the Ch1 investigation? Yes). Mondo doesn't really know what either of them look like aside from fuzzy memories of Cassie, but I do think that they know who Mondo is all too well. Hideo mostly doesn't care, but I think that time spent alone made Cassie feel like she could've given them so much more. She wants to reconnect with Mondo, especially after Daiya's death, but she has no clue how to do that, so in the end she just never even tries.

Design wise I wanted to make it clear that Hideo is. Kinda a scumbag? I don't think Cassie ever finds this out, but he's absolutely cheated on her at least once. Very real chance that Daiya and Mondo have some siblings out there that they don't know about. I also wanted him to be a pretty big influence on Daiya's style of dress, hence the hair being similar to a pompadour.

Cassie was designed to have a lot of features that'd be considered charming. She's got the big ol' doe eyes with subtle heterochromia, she's got freckles, a cute little nose, a rounder facial shape, etc. and etc. Like if i designed how she looked in high school before she entered her deeply problematic relationship, she would have to look really sweet and cute.

I'm a big fan of the idea that the orange part of Mondo's hair is actually the natural part, and it grew back out after she dyed her hair to look more like Daiya's, so she started to use that part for the pompadour instead. She also got Hideo's eye colour and pupil shape, nearly his exact skin tone, his nose, and Cassie's slightly rounder face shape, albeit a bit taller.

Daiya got a very similar hair colour to Hideo, nearly his exact facial structure, a mixture of both Cassie and Hideo's skin tones, Cassie's freckles, her big ol doe eyes plus their hazel colour, and her nose.

Headcanons- Enzo Reyes

Hello everyone! I am still swamped with college work but I wanted to post something so here's a little HC page I have had brewing for a while. Expect Rudy and Nova's soon! Also, I have discovered I absolutely love Reyes, and it's a shame he gets so forgotten about. God, I love a strong nose on a person, fan-freaking-tastic. Cura Ut Veleas! ~ Ceadis

Born November 13th, 1987, in Regina, Canada.

His parents were never married and had a contentious co-parenting relationship throughout his life

He moved with his mother to Alberta when he was 7, so he mostly saw his father over breaks and such

He is ¼ Tsuut'ina on his father's side (his father is half Tsuut'ina and half Spanish,) the two bonded over trapping and hunting. When he’s home, he will stay with his cousins on the reserve to go hunting with them.

Complex relationship with eating meat: believes you should only hunt/kill an animal ethically and for sustenance. Morally opposed to food waste. 

Can skin a deer in record time and not waste any meat/material from it. 

Complicated relationship with Catholicism, but both his mother and father are, at least partially, Roman Catholic.

Both of his parents married others, he has a year older step-sister on his father's side and two younger half-brothers (3 years younger and 5 years younger) on his mother's side. 

At age 13 he got into a massive fight with his mother over something silly (he forgot to turn in a take-home math quiz,) so he hitchhiked his way to his father over the course of 5 days. This is when he picked up his forgery skills from a truck driver he got a ride with. 

He accidentally evaded the police who were searching for him until he showed up at his father's house unharmed. 

Extremely proficient in hunting tracking and forgery. 

More than anything the police were just impressed he evaded them so well once he was delivered home safely. Was recommended to join the military by one of the deputies that brought him home. 

His first language was French (his mother speaks mostly French), second was Spanish (under his father.) Didn’t speak any English until he was 6 or so. Barely speaks French anymore unless with his mom. Is still fluent in Spanish. Also knows minimal Tsuut’ina to communicate while staying with his family that only speaks it. 

Terrible alcohol tolerance, 2 drinks and he’s wasted. 

Incredibly emotionally drunk. 

Chuy once convinced him to watch a nature documentary while drunk. He cried for thirty minutes when a baby seal got eaten by an orca. 

The least braggadocious guy ever, will never volunteer his skills or talk about them. 

That being said, he never backs down from a challenge. Just humbly accepts it and usually wins. 

The only person who can hunt/track a target better than Price.

Price fucking hates it.

Best friends with Chuy. Package deal. 

Enzo is incredibly shy but extroverted, he loves to talk to others and be involved in the action but it’s hard for him to initiate. 

Chuy is confident and introverted and acts as a good barrier for Enzo to feel more comfortable when talking with others. 

They bonded over a love for the outdoors/hunting, Reyes helped Chuy when his rifle broke down one mission and they’ve been besties since.

Has a tendency to talk back, but not out of a challenge to authority, more out of curiosity. 

The “Excuse me teacher, but isn’t it…” kid all grown up and never kicked the habit. 

The biggest nerd ever. Warhammer 40k, DND, wildlife fun facts, doesn’t matter. 

Trivia legend, he’s read a book on just about everything. 

Had to be banned from trivia night because he always wins. 

He always has a pack of waterproof playing cards on him, his favorite is a set he got from the Alberta Airport that have wildlife fun facts on every card.

Did you know that Caribou have 4 chambered stomachs and can swim up to 6 miles an hour?

Mostly nonfiction focusing on history, he will write out notes to better remember what he’s read.

It is a poorly kept secret that he will do weapon mods/maintenance in exchange for books, the issue is finding a book he hasn't read yet.

Is on a first-name basis with his hometown's librarians.

Has been working on and off on a Ph.D. in history through an online/long-distance program.

It is about the purposeful destruction of the Canadian governmental records relating to First Nations regiments in the army during the 19th century. The process has been incredibly slow because he works on it remotely and, as stated, many of the records either do not exist or were intentionally destroyed.

Teddy Bear. Gives great hugs, sweetheart of a man, loves to cook for others, and always volunteers to help people. Just generally a great dude. 

This does not extend to his job. 

He doesn’t have a weak stomach when it comes to his work. 

He is ruthless, he is calculated, he is damn good at what he does. 

He gets along well with his comrades, sure, but he’s not letting himself get killed in the field for something stupid. 

Incredibly capable. Do not mistake his affability for weakness.

Vivian Silver, Missing Israeli-Canadian Peace Activist, Confirmed Killed in Oct 7 Hamas Attack

A founding member of the Israeli-Palestinian Women Wage Peace movement and other peace organizations, Vivian Silver was thought to have been kidnapped by Hamas and taken to the Gaza Strip

Vivian Silver, the veteran peace activist who was believed to be among the approximately 240 Israeli civilians and soldiers kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, is now confirmed to have been killed on the morning of the attack.

More than five weeks after the attacks, forensic experts informed Silver's family on Monday that they had successfully identified her remains.

A longtime member of Be’eri – one of the kibbutzim on the Gaza border invaded by dozens of Hamas terrorists on October 7 – Silver had volunteered for years to help Palestinian residents of Gaza in need of medical aid in Israel.

Silver, who had been widowed several years ago, lived alone in Be’eri. According to her son Yonatan Zeigen, she was last heard from Saturday morning at 11:07 A.M. Before that, she notified friends and family that she was hiding behind a closet in her safe room.

“First we spoke by phone, but then when we heard the gunshots getting closer, we decided it was best to move to text messaging,” he told Haaretz.

In his last message to his mother, Zeigen recounted, he wrote “I’m with you.”

“I feel you,” she responded.

Describing his mother as “a very resilient person,” he relayed that in their last phone conversation, she joked that she had not brought a knife with her into the safe room. “For us, that was funny because my mom was such a pacifist,” he said.

Zeigen, who lives in Tel Aviv, had planned to come with his family to Be’eri for the weekend in order to spend the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah with his mother. “In our phone conversation, we both said how fortunate it was that I hadn’t come,” he relayed.

Silver’s other son Chen lives in Connecticut.

The 74-year-old, born in Winnipeg, immigrated to Israel 50 years ago with Habonim Dror, a Socialist Zionist youth movement. She was among a group of young North Americans who helped found Kibbutz Gezer in central Israel.

A grandmother of four, Silver moved from Gezer to Be’eri with her family in 1990 and has lived there ever since. She was a founding member of the Israeli-Palestinian Women Wage Peace movement, which was established in late 2014 after the last major war in Gaza.

Just a few days before her kibbutz was overrun by terrorists, Silver had participated in a march that Women Wage Peace holds each year during the Sukkot holiday.

In an interview with Haaretz six years ago, after yet another round of fighting between Israel and Gaza had ended in a truce, she said: “With what’s happening now, I think our message is more timely than ever. The only way to bring all this violence to an end is by negotiating a peace agreement. This cease-fire may last a few weeks or a few months, but until the two sides sit down and talk, it’s not going to be over.”

Silver was particularly active in promoting equality for the Bedouin communities in southern Israel, located not far from her own kibbutz. She served as the co-CEO – together with Amal al-Sana – of The Arab-Jewish Center for Equality, Empowerment and Cooperation, which promotes shared society among Jews and Arabs in Israel and peacemaking efforts between Israelis and Palestinians.

Among her various volunteer activities over the years, Silver was an active member of Road to Recovery, an organization that helps transport patients from Gaza to hospitals in Israel so that they can receive proper medical care.

She had decided to immigrate to Israel after spending her junior year abroad at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1974, a day after she completed her final exams at university in Canada, she boarded a one-way flight back to Israel.

In 1981, Silver founded a department promoting gender equality within the kibbutz movement, and she later served on the board of the New Israel Fund.

In 1998, she was appointed executive director of the Negev Institute for Strategies of Peace and Development in Beersheba. Until the outbreak of the second intifada in the early 2000s, she traveled to Gaza frequently as a participant in various people-to-people peacemaking initiatives.

Colette Avital, a former diplomat and Knesset member who was friends with Silver, said, “Whenever and wherever I met her, she was always enthusiastic about some new idea, embracing some new initiative, always optimistic, always ready to help, always with a smile on her face.”

She continued, “I cannot help but think, to try to imagine what her last thoughts must have been, when she saw the men for whom she fought, the men she helped, come to brutally take away her life. And I cannot stop my tears. For her, for peace."

6. Work I’m most proud of (and why):

I feel like I have to answer In the midst of a storm. Writing this fic was extremely frustrating at times because I had this amazing picture of it in my head but I felt like I could never do it justice due to lack of time, energy, and stability. I pushed myself through it and managed to finish it, though, and honestly some comments I got on it made me look at it in a much more positive light! Hopefully I’ll be able to read it back one day without cringing too much lol

7. Work I’m least proud of (and why):

Probably As long as you’re not afraid to feel. Not that I think it’s bad or anything, but I feel like you can tell by reading it that I wasn’t really into it. It’s one of these fics whose idea I came up with early on, but only started working on it months afterwards due to other commitments, and by then I’d kind of lost my initial interest in it :/ I do think it’s a pretty fun one, but it could have been much better if I’d worked on it as soon as I started brainstorming it

8. Share or describe a favorite review you received:

As I said, some of the reviews on In the midst of a storm really warmed my heart and kinda made me change my opinion on it! Shoutout to @lululawrence‘s lovely comments especially 😊

9. A time when writing was really, really hard:

Ugh, the entire year until September, basically. 2022 has been a very stessful year for me, and despite wanting to make writing a priority, it definitely felt like I’d lost my mojo at times. I only started to pull myself out of it once I 1. moved back to Canada and 2. got into the Dream fandom - I probably just needed a change after 3 years of focusing exclusively on 1d, I guess

10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: 

I wrote a few smut-adjacent scenes for It the midst of a storm that did surprise me, or at least were a new experience for me lol

11. A favorite excerpt of your writing:

From Running From The Sun

 “I don’t. I don’t want you,” Niall protests, but it sounds half-hearted at best. Louis almost has her in a chokehold now, and it’s time for her to land the final blow.

 “Yes, you do. You think I haven’t seen the way you were looking at me earlier, while you were dancing with that guy? You think I can’t hear your heart beat faster whenever I get a little too close?” She punctuates her words by taking the last step that separates her and Niall, and now she’s got the slayer right in front of her again. Right where she wants her. “Hell, you think I don’t notice the blood rushing to your cheeks right now?” she adds in a mere whisper. “You think-”

 “Shut up,” Niall hisses out. Louis can see her swallow, and she knows she’s got her now.

 “Make me,” she dares her.

12. How did you grow as a writer this year: 

It’s probably gonna sound dramatic but, for the major part of the year, I’ve felt like I was regressing as a writer. I’d constantly be second-guessing everything I wrote down, including stuff that I never had a problem with before (like dialogues). It’s been pretty exhausting, but in the end I guess it did make me grow, in that it made me more aware of my strengths and weaknesses.

A more practical answer would be that I wrote for new pairings and fandoms, and as mentioned before I even wrote some more explicit scenes, which is something I never thought I’d be able to do, much less to share 😳

13. How do you hope to grow next year:

Continue posting for the Dream fandom. I’m currently working on a longer fic for it that I’m really excited about!

Otherwise I’d like to get back into writing everyday, and like Jinny said, try to edit less while writing even though that habit is so ingrained in me that it might prove to be difficult.

14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc): 

Oh god... My introvert tendencies came back in full force this year, and I ended up taking a big step away from the 1d writing community, unfortunately. Maybe that’s something that I’ll try to change next year too, because I do miss these interactions!

Weirdly enough, I wanna say it’s the opposite. In both New York Kiss and In the midst of a storm, Zayn works a retail job, and that’s something I ended up doing for the first time over the summer. Life imitating art and all that 😌

Who am I to impart wisdom? lol I guess just... don’t give up. If you’re feeling like you’re losing your inspiration, give yourself some time and/or try something else (like a new pairing or something). Follow whatever excites you in a given moment, even if it means putting other projects on hold.

17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year:

I’m excited to keep writing my current Dreamnotfound fic. Also looking forward to running the Zouis Fest again, and to starting writing my fic for it (even though I have no clue what it’ll be yet)

Life of leopard slugs! An autistic persons facts from raising 87!

22 Facts about slugs:

When they hatched they were about the size of a grain of rice! Fatboy was the first to hatch and remained the biggest. 

they wiggle their eye stalks when happy, and each have their own eye colours ranging from amber to green 

They seemed to understand what I was saying to some degree considering If I told Fatboy to stay for a sec he would usually slow down or stop. 

My slugs liked to cuddle in one big pile when they were young and would compete for the “best spot” to sleep 

We thought we were getting 30 eggs, we got 87! 

Leopard slugs are the one of the biggest land slugs in the world with a maximum recorded size of seven and a half inches—Fatboy reached 7 inches! 

The largest slug in the world is the absolutely amazing limax cinereoniger, and they have a white stripe on their foot (underside of a slug/snail which is a large muscle used to pull them along so they can move) 

Slugs are from the phylum mollusca alongside clams and oysters! 

They have  20,000+ teeth. They loose their teeth regularly and they grow back! I really wish they were large enough for me to have found a few. 

Leopard slugs lay roughly 200 eggs per batch! 

They really, really like cucumber. I cannot stress how much they like cucumber. 

We released the 86 into our giant  composters which we use to make dirt (we live on a small homestead) 

At around ten months old, Fatboy developed a small white dot on his cheek which turned out to be a spot that basically signals to other slugs that he’s an adult and capable of mating 

I believe I created a very tiny group of hybrid slugs because im finding small slugs that have the patterning of leopard slugs but in lighter colours—so very well I could have found the grandchildren of the slugs I raised! 

Sadly I doubt any of my released slugs are still alive, as they tend to live about two years even if they didn’t have to deal with birds, which are the leopard slugs biggest predator because of their size 

The slime can be difficult to wash off so I recommend putting soap onto a washcloth and scrubbing you hands with the cloth to get off any extra sticky bits! 

They need lots of moisture, but you have to make sure to balance how often you spray down the tank because you don’t want mites to form 

Leopard slugs are an invasive species in Canada (where I live), but they aren’t a problem because all they do is eat rotting matter! They will rarely go into peoples garden’s because leopard slugs really do prefer rotting over fresh veggies. 

Slugs are omnivores! They seem to prefer to eat vegetables such as lettuce, cucumber, zucchini, but can also eat fungi, leaves, moss, and even decaying animals! (They are not opposed to cannibalism if starving)

The reason you may be finding a lot of slugs in your gardens, at least in the city, is because we’ve destroyed their homes! Just like ticks they’re having to use our backyards because, well, they have no where else to go. Ever thought about why you can’t find slugs very easily in a park? It’s because they can safety burrow and feed—they have no reason to gather together in small backyards to find good food supplies, aka your garden. I recommend, if you can, just making a composter area where you put your compost, they’ll move in there and happily break down your food waste into dirt! 

Never use salt to kill slugs! It drains all the moisture from their bodies as they dehydrate until they die. It’s very painful and a slow death that can last 5-10 minutes. If you really feel the need to kill slugs, it’s more humane to crush them. please, please never use salt. 

probably the most talked about fact about these guys is their extravagant mating rituals where they hang upside down and entwine their translucent genetalia, but most people don’t know is that they both get pregnant!

Overall, they’re amazing creatures and are far more diverse than people give them credit for!

2023 FFRC - April 🌷

It's finally hammock weather in Western Canada, folks! And we've been enjoying watching the hockey playoffs from the patio entertainment area we set up once the snow melted - well, I don't know if the word "enjoying" should be used when the team we hate most in the world is moving on to the 2nd round - but it's been exciting anyway.

We've also been sick at our house for most of the month but we're finally starting to come out of it. My Bethy still sounds like Miley Cyrus when she talks - but other than some low-key coughs, she's no longer down with a fever, so we're happy about that.

Continuing along - it's rugby season - so that means a lot of driving to away games to cheer on the Spartans (which means a LOT of reading). I've read more this month than I have ever read. I was also really focused on finishing up the 'extreme' tasks at the @fanfic-reading-challenge - and I finished a few days ago. I'll keep going until I've completed all the tasks in the challenge but I can do that over the course of the rest of the year. 🎉

So as you can see, this month I read 2.3 million words, cracking over 7 mill total - and read 922 chapters (of various lengths), and 107 full (and sometimes long) stories. I was working on some fandom challenges and let me tell you - it was harder than it looked!

I'm not a Carmy/Sydney fangirl and that is what this fandom is saturated with, so I was HAPPY to find that someone wrote a story where Carmy meets a girl at an meeting and they just GET each other. And neither one is a perfect human - she doesn't SAVE him from himself or anything. They just bear each other's burdens and are THERE for eachother. This is just gorgeous.

Summary: It's June of 1962, and to celebrate being a year clean, Lenny rents a little house in Malibu, inviting Midge to join him.

Why you should read: I got back on my nonsense with the season premiere of TMMM and since I got 3 minutes of Lenny and now have to wait like 8 episodes to see him again, I thought I'd reread old favourites. This one is set post S4 sometime in the future - when Lenny has been in rehab and wants to make things right with Midge. It's SO good and captures their characters perfectly and makes me want to sit on the beach with good friends (and a handsome Jewish comic).

Why you should read: FIRSTLY - Neville is one of my most favourite characters in all of Potterdom and I wanted him to be happy almost from the very first moment we met him. Secondly - it's funny. Hot and funny and sweet. I mean, Neville wants to save her dying(dead) plants that happened to be in the back of her tinder pictures. He's a delight. And this fic is also a delight. You should read it!

Summary: Xavier Thorpe didn’t exactly expect Wednesday to use the cell phone he purchased for her. It was a ridiculous idea, a whim, a fancy. But something had compelled him to try. So, it was with some shock, two weeks into their break from Nevermore, that Xavier’s phone buzzed on his nightstand.

Why you should read: I'm certain I rec'd this before - but now there is a third story that came out this month (and IT IS AMAZING) - so I could just rec that third story, or I could link you to the whole thing and make you reread it (just like I did). Post season 1 - kinky hot but super tender as well. Funny. Just lovely. and I'm never going to complain about a Xavier PoV. He's my fave. Read this one - if you're not into Wenvier yet, make this your first foray. Come ship with me!

Today I hiked for the first time in months again; I only did about 7 km but I did them very swiftly over the space of an hour on the Okanagan Rail Trail. Bizarrely to me, this was an active rail line back when I was a kid and I still feel slightly torn over them not turning it into a light passenger transit line - and what they did, making it a trail. I love walking on this trail now - with its flat grade and soft pea gravel it is gentle on the legs, if often very icy in winter - but I believe that its real value is in being a safe corridor for local wildlife to utilize at night when humans are not present. Since it stretches from the north Okanagan to the central Okanagan it's pretty long, meaning that its impact as a wildlife corridor isn't insignificant. Cougars, black bears, mule deer, coyotes, mallard ducks, Canada geese, amphibians, snakes, raccoons and songbirds all now have this lengthy, quiet band of protected space in the very populated Okanagan Valley to utilize. I like that; it helps me feel good about it, and I love imagining cougars lounging on the cliffs above, watching as mule deer come down to Kalamalka Lake for a midnight drink. With the daytime humans and their bikes and dogs at home the wildlife now have a safe serenity in the darkness.

It was weird how trepiditious I felt setting out, like a nervous horse playing with its bit and prancing. I'm an experienced thruhiker, yet after months of not hiking due to my mom's condition and being glued to her side I took a long time to settle back into my favourite sport. It was cool - -1 Celsius with a windchill of about -5C - but this late into the winter I'm acclimated to freezing temperatures. Still, I was a bit sweaty from work earlier in the day and feeling hesitant to embark, but I made myself go anyway. Eventually, after ten minutes or so I settled back into my usual stride - albeit slower than personal speed records - and I felt okay in my habitat by myself again. (Honestly, the worst thing about growing older is having parents who can no longer keep up with me on the trail. Last year in Jasper National Park it depressed me to the point of flopping in the middle of the trail mid-climb of a pass and staring miserably up at the sky for a good twenty minutes.)

I hiked until civilization fell out of sight, with Rattlesnake/Turtlehead Point adjacent and stopped to admire the pure lack of humanity. I pray that everyone gets to have moments like this of even just perceived wilderness, with not a single building in sight, with just you and the wild for company. After a moment or two (because I never pause long,) I turned back for the trailhead where I had left my car and then wandered a mall for an hour to kill some more time before going to my second doctor's appointment about my newly diagnosed ADHD. There I learned that my ferratin/iron is too low, so I won't be allowed to donate blood as planned this spring. In fact, there's talk of an intravenous iron infusion happening. (On the bright side this gives me a fine excuse to move forwards with my self-tattoo plans since I am not allowed to get tattooed while actively donating.) My thyroid is well though, and I got prescribed a stimulant for my ADHD, which the government will supposedly be helping with financially.

I came home to my mom having a Bad Day. Just in case you don't know, being a caretaker to a beloved family member with cancer is really f***ing awful - you're stressed to the nines almost constantly, terrified, uncomfortably familiar with the Emergancy Room at your local hospital (the staff know you,) plus horribly familiar with hearing your loved one whimper all night in agony. This has been my dad and I's absolute hell for years now and I can firmly tell you: cancer is not a battle, it is a WAR.

So now I lay down to sleep, in my day clothes, because I know there's a very real terrible chance that we'll have to take Mom to the ER again tonight. F*** cancer.

Here's my tattoo design which insisted on coming to life though - a cougar, a cat sacred to my family, especially my mom but also me. For years I kept dreaming of this big benevolent kitty coming to visit me, to the point where I became fond of her and named her Mud.

I am in so much pain today and can’t afford to take any extra pain killers as I have just enough until my refill without chancing going into withdrawals (which is worse than the pain). I understand the need to keep dispensing them very rigid but at the same time, it really sucks when the pain is this intense.

Third month recap: August

Friday 1st September marked the end of my third month travelling since I left Burlington, with the odometer just 500k shy of meeting the 20,000 mark. I spent the day driving for a few hours over back roads, stopping enroute to snap some pictures, exploring the local attractions (the "Dead Sea of Canada"), having a conversation with a friendly family, and ending with a campfire before diving into my tent... one of many similar days in the last few months! 🤩🤩🤩

It's surprising how easy the traveling has been, without any health or safety issues, and for most of the time in good spirits without feeling bored or lonely. I'm in awe of this country, even more than I was before, and I feel very grateful for all the amazing experiences I had! 😍🥰 Living out of my car has also been much more comfortable than I ever expected and in theory, I could do this for a long long time.

That said, the mechanics of traveling takes a lot of energy, from figuring out what I want to visit & booking places to stay, to setting up camp, never-ending groceries (because I don't use ice) & gas, and being constantly on the move. I've had exactly 4 days of doing nothing; 2 days on the beach (in NB and SK) and 2 days at friends (in QC & AB), and although that's ofcourse entirely my own doing, I'm looking forward to a bit more calmness! 😀 The forest fires changed my plans dramatically but that's probably not a bad thing as soon after, the first few cold nights & more extensive rain arrived, so mentally I was also getting ready to call it a day. Plus, I'm very excited about the next phases of my plan; spending time with my family & friends in Europe,and sorting myself out for a new life in Chile!

In the last month, I drove west from Sleeping Giant past Kenora and the impressive Lake of the Woods to Winnipeg for a special wedding ceremony. I then drove through some amazing scenery in the southern Prairies and made my way through badlands to Calgary. where I was happy to meet two sets of good friends. After that, the amazing Rockies with all their glorious mountains, canyons & lakes until I hit the smoke from BC's forest fires. West Kootenay is somewhere I will return to one day, as sadly I had to turn around and drive back through East Kootenay to the (this time gloomier) Rockies. Heading east from then onwards, I had a fun stay in Edmonton and then criss-crossed through central AB & SK to visit some cool places. An epic journey through an extremely diverse part of Canada! 😍

9. Modern & Indigenous art in Edmonton, AB

10. Dinosaur fossils and badlands, Drumheller & Dinosaur Park, AB

11. Floating at the Dead Sea of Canada, SK

after tomorrow, it's easy. weeks. days. minutes. until i'm in your arms.

i dont know if i've ever waited so long for something. definitely finishing high school lol. other than that.. our whole story has been longer than it took me to complete uni. how wild is that. and i've been pretty good about not thinking about what happens after. there's still so much planning and stuff to take care of and things to sort. so i'm keeping busy with that. i also love how much more active you've been in the weekender chat. reaching out to my friends for things etc. you've been on top of it and i really, really love that. you're not asking me to message them, you're doing it. ugh. i love it.

i can't help thinking though. is this it. are you my person. IDK. and i know it doesn't matter, i'm still soooo young i could have 5 persons after you. it's more likely than not knowing me. i honestly get bored easily and as much as i want to "settle down" eventually, i also don't. i'm such a free spirit. i need someone who wants to be a free spirit with me AND adult with me. i'm finding that is soooo hard to find. someone who wants to do last minute crazy shit and spend all our money on traveling and having fun, and maybe have a family but not give up all the things we love, in moderation of course. like how does that work. need that 7 fig salary lol.

and as much as i absolutely love my life right now, i can't take anything off the table. would i move to london again? maybe. idk what i'd do with felix i couldn't leave him.. people move continents with pets all the time. i'm sure it would be fine. but fuck. starting my whole life over again basically. new job, new friends. it just seems like a lot. as much as i loved living in europe, my family is here. and i dont just mean my mom, but my chosen family. i would be so fricken far away from them. see them maybe 2-3 if that times a year. but i'd also be closer to lena and pati. maybe i'd see them 5-6 times a year. but right now, i get to see my family 2-3 times a month, if not more. that's such a huge difference.

i know i'm getting way ahead of myself, but i'm a planner. i need to calculate these things. see what's feasible. i would have to save a shit ton of money to move to london. maybe try to find a job beforehand. idk how easy it would be to get a work visa but apparently it's not that hard. or would brandon move here? literally no friends, far from his parents. it's hard. i hate distance so much. but i also love that he's from the UK and lives in europe and even though im finding out has been basically nowhere LOL, it's such an important factor for me idk why. i find the guys who have just lived in canada or a few cities in canada are so.. bleh. i need someone who's cultured. and vacationing in europe a few times doesn't count. i just relate to europeans so much more i think. i have the mindset. i live it. i love it. it's just, me.

anyways, this is a future me problem. maybe brandon comes and has a blast and that's good and wants to keep things the way they are. stay close friends across continents and see each other for shows and plan trips and keep it as is. which wouldn't be awful. but i think i would need more eventually. i think. idk. who the fuck knows. i just know i'm falling in love and i should just enjoy feeling this way because it's god damn wonderful.

Everything You Need To Know To Move To Panama With Your Pet

You want to move to Panama with your fur babies. Of course! I moved to Panama with my cat, Elizabeth. So, I totally get it. The process of moving pets to Panama is time sensitive and takes effort. But it’s very doable. Your pet will love living in Panama with you.

Step by step, here’s everything you need to know and do to bring a dog or cat to Panama (plus more on other types of pets below).

1. Consult Your Veterinarian About Moving Your Pet To Panama (3 To 6 Months Before Your Move)

Sometimes older pets can get too stressed when flying, especially if they must travel in cargo. The journey can do them more harm than good.

 Discuss all aspects of your pet’s condition and health with your vet. And do what’s best for them.

2. Understand The Cost Of Moving Pets To Panama.

The total cost to move a pet from the U.S. or Canada to Panama can be around $500 to $1,000 if you do the process on your own.

 Hiring a pet relocation service can cost you around $3,000 (more on this below).

3. Check Airlines’ Policies About Traveling With Pets

Most airlines will not allow pets to fly if it is too hot or too cold outside. There is often a ban on traveling with pets during major holidays, like Christmas, when travelers may have extra luggage.

With those potential restrictions in mind, here are a few questions to ask:

Does Your Pet Fit The Size To Fly ‘In-Cabin’?

Flying in-cabin means your pet will be in a crate under a seat. If you want to bring a second pet in the cabin, another person must fly with you. If not, the second pet will go in special pet cargo.

If your pet is too large to fit under the seat in front of you on the plane, it must fly in cargo. Consider this list of crate sizes allowed in Copa Airlines’ pet cargo area and the costs:

SMALL $405 28 X 20.5 X 21.5 MEDIUM $605 36 X 25 X 27 LARGE $805 40 X 27 X 30 X LARGE $1,005 42 X 29 X 33

If your pet is too large to fly in cargo, you will either need to use a pet relocation company or charter a private jet to get you and your pets to Panama. It’s about $25,000 for a private jet from Florida to Panama. 

What Are The Pet Carrier Requirements (Including Height)?

You’ll need to see if the pet carrier you own will work or purchase a pet carrier accordingly.

Can You Take A Direct International Flight To Panama?

Domestic flights have small pet cargo areas that you may want to avoid. It’s also easier to rent a car or hire a driver to get you and your pets to your new home in Panama. 

See if you can drive to a hub with direct flights to Panama, like Houston or Miami.

4. Avoid Arriving On Panamanian Holidays, Weekends, Or After Hours

Here’s why: Once you arrive at the airport in Panama, a veterinarian must inspect your pet. The working hours of vets are 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. during weekdays, except on Panamanian holidays.

If you arrive when the vets are not working, your pet must stay in an airport kennel until the veterinarian’s office reopens.

5. Book Your Flights

Once you’ve selected the airline and flight that ticks all the boxes, including arrival times in Panama, you can book your flights.

Keep in mind that airlines usually have a limit of two pets in a cabin. So, if your pet fits the requirements to fly in-cabin, you want to book your flights early!

You will not be able to book your pet to go in cargo until you have all the necessary paperwork for your pet to fly to Panama.

Knowing your arrival date in Panama is essential to follow the remaining steps of the process:

6. Familiarize Your Pet With Their Crate

Once you know what size pet carrier is needed for your pet, buy it 3 months before your flight and start getting your pet familiar with being in the crate.

7. Get The Necessary Vaccines

Thirty days before your move, get all the shots your pet needs and update their vaccine records. Here’s a list of vaccines they need.

8. Shop For Your Pets (If Needed) 

In Panama, you can find almost all specialty pet food brands and special needs food, including gluten-free pet food. Other items like toys, kennels, and pet beds are also available.

That said, I’ve noticed that cat treats aren’t widely available. I order the treats from Amazon and get them shipped to Panama. So, you might want to bring a few packets of cat treats. 

9. Complete All 3 Of These Processes In The 10 Days Before Your Move

There are three steps to follow at this stage. Remember, you have just 10 days to complete all three of these processes:

Get An International Health Certificate 

You need to get this certificate from your vet. Even though the international health certificate is valid for 30 days, most airlines will not accept a pet health certificate that is more than 10 days old.

Expect to pay $200 to $400 for the health certificate. You may be able to include two pets in one certificate.

Have The Health Certificate Authenticated By The Agriculture Department 

If you’re from the U.S., the authority in charge of this process is the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). If you’re from Canada, visit the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Ask if your vet will include this authentication in their fee.

If you’re living too far to visit the department in person, send them the international health certificate by courier and pay for next-day delivery. Include a return next-day delivery envelope, so you can get it back without delay. I recommend using FedEx to courier the document.

It’s a good idea to call the authority in your country ahead to discuss the process.

Have The Health Certificate Authenticated By The Consulate Of Panama

Once you’ve got the authentication from the agriculture department, you need to get all the documents authenticated by the Panamanian consulate nearest you. See this list of Panama Consulates.

Again, if there’s no consulate office near you, send the certificate via courier with next-day delivery and include a next-day delivery envelope to save time on its return. 

The Consulate of Panama in the U.S. asks you to clearly state “TRAVELING WITH PET” on the envelope so they can fast-track the process.

You can also get the documents Apostilled at the Secretary of State’s Authentication Office in your state.

Pro Tip: The Panamanian consulate charges $30 to authenticate each document, which you must pay via money order.

10. Complete One Of These Processes 3 Days Before Your Move

Request For Home Quarantine

At least 3 days before your arrival, you must send a document to the Department of Zoonosis Control in Panama requesting a 40-day home quarantine. This means your pet can stay (quarantine) in your home or yard in Panama rather than a pet quarantine facility.

The request will cost you $130 per pet. You can pay it once you arrive in Panama.

Here’s the Home Quarantine Request Document in English. When you send the documents, remember to also submit an image of your passport or ID in Panama. 

Make sure your documentation is in order. If the Panamanian authorities decide that the pet doesn’t meet the requirements after its arrival, they will send the pet back. You want to avoid your pet being returned at all costs! 

Alternative: Get Help Completing Your Home Quarantine Documents

There are service providers in Panama who can take care of all the home quarantine documentation for you. They will meet you at the airport in Panama and help you handle the pet inspection process.

11. It’s Time To Pack!

Prepare a packing list for your pet to make sure you pack everything.

Remember to start packing early. It’s easy to forget something if you wait till the last minute. 

12. Get To The Airport 4 To 5 Hours Before Your Flight

The extra checks and steps to fly with a pet internationally can take time. Things might get done faster, and you could have extra time. But it’s better to be early than late and sorry! 

Make sure your pet is comfortable, but do note that most airlines will not allow you to medicate or sedate your pet for the flight. 

If your pet flies in cargo, know that you might have to pick them up with your baggage.

13. Once You’re In Panama: The Veterinarian Inspection

The airport’s veterinarian will check the relevant documents and inspect your pet.

As mentioned earlier, you’ll need to pay $130 per pet for home quarantine as well as another $16 for the pet to enter Panama.

Once you get the “all clear,” you can go home! If you hire a company to help with the airport’s pet clearance process (as discussed earlier), they’ll drive you to a pet-friendly hotel or your final destination.

14. The Home Quarantine Period

Follow the instructions in the home quarantine form to fulfill your responsibilities, including:

Finding a veterinarian to keep your pet up-to-date with vaccines and nutrition and to control preventative diseases. 

Keeping them in a clean area.

Providing good care. 

Contacting the authorities if you notice any changes in your pet’s behavior.

Refer to the home quarantine form for the complete list and details. 

Pro Tip: Panama has many highly trained veterinarians with the latest equipment and services. Some vets speak fluent English. You can get recommendations from expats and Facebook groups.

Moving to Panama with pets may be stressful for you because of all the time-sensitive steps. But it is oh so worth it to have your fur babies with you in Panama! Know that thousands of people have successfully moved their pets to Panama and you can, too!

Pet Relocation Services

If the entire process of moving your pet to Panama sounds complicated and too time-sensitive, you can get a pet relocation company to handle the complete process. 

Their prices can vary. In general, expect to pay around $3,000 per pet for their service.

But if you can follow the steps mentioned above, you really don’t need to hire a third party and spend extra money. 

Moving To Panama With Other Types Of Pets

You may have other pets (that are not dogs and cats), like birds. They are considered “exotic” pets. I recommend you call the nearest Consulate of Panama to clarify the rules and documentation requirements. They may ask you to contact the local authorities in Panama. 

In this instance, you might be better off hiring an experienced pet relocation service.

Adopting A Pet In Panama

Maybe you can’t bring your pet due to their health issues. Or perhaps you want to become a brand-new pet owner in Panama. 

There’s no shortage of fur babies in the country. You can adopt a pet through an adoption agency, or sometimes a pet will adopt you! 

If you’re not ready to become a full-time pet owner, you can volunteer at spay/neuter days and help community dogs and cats. There are also opportunities to foster pets until they find permanent homes. 

Panama is dog friendly and a pet-friendly country, in general. So, no matter what pet you bring or adopt, they will surely have a good life.

The last time I did this was-, god I almost said 6 months ago but July was just 7 weeks ago... Feels so far away.

I hope Im at a better place by the time July is 6 months behind me.

Work has been the same. I may be on the precipice of a promotion, one that, if it truly happens, would put me in a position of being able to move out while still supporting my family and myself.

I already have a location Id like to move to, between where my family is and work. Could be nice, if it happens. My family's given me their support, the only issue is the reality of money unfortunately.

Got into a new game recently, a popular MMO that many people have been egging me into playing. Eventually I caved and I have to admit, Im having fun playing it. Its fun being able to connect with my friends in new ways because of it too.

A few weeks ago in the summer, I met up with an old high school friend to celebrate her birthday. And while her friends were more on the outer ring of my social circle, it was nice catching up with familiar faces.

I visited Canada! That was actually really fun, exploring Montreal with family I have up there, eating the food, being able to say I drove there. I still plan to visit the Niagara Falls so it was good to also have this under my belt too.

My cats are doing well, I love them with all of my entire being. I like to think that they love me too, yknow.

I've... I've been trying to. Hm. Im trying to put together the words but I want to say multiple things at once and Im not sure how to articulate it.

Something changed recently. Not anything major, not anything I can undeniably prove, but something changed. A lens shifted, a synapse fired, a shift in spirits or a course correction of my life. I dont know. But I realized that I've... been walking around shattered. Not broken, not torn, not... any other one-worded metaphor. I was, and am, a shattered facsimile of the person I was a year ago, fuck, a few months ago.

Its important that I say shattered. Because of the meaning behind the word that comes to mind for me. The fragility of broken glass, the sensation of holding shards of hardened clay, the sight of looking into a mirror and seeing the metaphorical hairline fractures in your minds eye as you stare yourself in the eyes.

...Ive been sitting at this line for 30 minutes and I dont know what else to say about the matter to be honest. Im still processing it, trying to figure out what I do from here. What to make of it all, the me of the now, the me of the past, the me of the future.

There are some old practices Id like to get back in to. Tarot reading and origami mostly, shards of myself that I didnt know had broken off until recently. There are some places Im planning on visiting in the Fall and Winter, Ive been looking forward to them. Funnily enough my dreams came back too, didn't really talk about that did I? How for a while I havent had dreams.

To think, when they came back, you were right there in all of them.

And then you sent me those messages, like you already knew what was happening...

Im glad the weather has been getting cooler. Im ready for summer to end. I may be a leo but Im also the "light that shines in the abyss", my place is within the cool dark rather than the blazing light.

Jokes, mostly. Im just happy for the cooler weather and vibrant colors of Autumn. Looking forward to wearing my jackets and boots again.

Joyce Echaquan

Yesterday, on the 28th of september, Joyce Echaquan, a 37 yo mother of 7 (the youngest is only 7 months old) died at the hôpital de Joliette in Québec, Canada. There will be an investigation by a coroner and one nurse was fired.

Before her death, she filmed herself. Carol Dubé, her husband, said (rough translation from french) : ’’My wife went to the hospital on saturday for a stomach ache. Two days later, she is dead. [...] We see she asks for help on Facebook... [...] We see the personnel being degrading. I have seven children who now find themselves motherless.’’ She was declared dead moments after her video.     

In the beginning of her video, Joyce is alone and there is an alarm ringing. I think it’s the thing to call the nurse? Hearing Joyce’s voice, she seemed scared and it looked like she had trouble moving, probably because of some medication. She screams, scared, when the nurse doesn't show up. She lets out a few screams of despair and frustration until you hear someone coming in, almost 4 minutes into the video. I don’t know how long she waited before recording. 

Joyce Echaquan can be heard asking for help in atikamekw. She wanted someone to come for her because she had been overmedicated. She couldn’t take pain meds, and morphine was particularly dangerous because of her heart.

She was still given something that was dangerous for her because her nurse.s thought she was too agitated. While Joyce asks for help and is distressed  you can also hear racist and disgusting comments in the background (which, understandably, seems to distress her more).

Rough/literal/bad (sorry) translation from french :

‘’I think you’re having trouble taking care of yourself, so we’re gonna do it for you, ok?’’

‘’That’s better off dead’’ (’’That’’ being Joyce)

‘’Are you done fucking around? Fuck.’’

‘’Eh, you’re dumb as fuck’’

 ‘’You’ve made bad choices, gorgeous. What would your kids think, seeing you like this? Think about them a little.’��

‘‘That’s better at fucking than doing other things’‘ (meaning ‘‘That’s only good at fucking’‘) 

‘‘Who do you think pays for this?’‘

The video ends when an employee stops the recording. The video was deleted by one of them from facebook. We only have Joyce’s video because someone recorded the live she did. 

In a video her daughter did that I can’t re-find, we can see Joyce Echaquan was tied down to her hospital bed (after the events that were shown by her video). Her daughter believes Joyce Echaquan was already dead at that time. She talks to her softly in atikamekw. I understand none of it, but I still cried like a baby because her words sounded so strong, loving and sad.   

Our government refuse to recognize it’s an exemple of systemic racism. Prime minister Legault said something out of touch like ‘’Oh yes, yes, yes, ah, see! Racism is real! The employees are racists! But no systemic racism in sight :)’’ It’s not a big surprise coming from an islamophobe who banned ‘’religious symbols’’ for people working in public services, which essentially affected muslim women who wear hijab.

What is so sad is that it comes almost exactly a year after the Commission Viens recognized that First Nations and Inuits are facing systemic discrimination + recommended (142) changes. It’s not the first Commission of its kind. The Truth and reconciliation commission said, amongst other things, that : Canada is guilty of genocide and systemic racism exists! Yes, yes! Our governments prefer big reports to taking action or just fucking providing clean water for everyone :) 

Please, remember Joyce. 

Please, talk about systemic racism.

Please, demand we do better.
