* late night, watching television / but how'd we get in this position ( jaime reyes/blue beetle x f!reader )
♫ “I REALLY LIKE YOU” CARLY RAE JEPSEN
Fic Request: Hiiii I was wondering if you could do a Jaime x reader with them watching a horror movie together, more of the reader is used to it but Jaime is tryna act big and tough but is scared deep down. - @evermorewest
A/N: Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle Imagine. This was a lot of fun to write. I love horror movies, so I was smiling while typing. I hope I captured your request! Thank you for submitting. Feel free to submit any requests. (I do think Xolo makes the perfect Blue Beetle.) Thank you so much! ♥ [Warnings: Fluff, some language]
-----
“Movie night!” You carried in a big bowl of popcorn, random candies, and some drinks. Jaime followed you into the living room at your place holding his share of snacks which consisted of Hot Cheetos and his choice of candy - Sour Punch straws. “You didn’t pick a crappy flavor did you?”
“Uhh no. Who do you think I am,” Jaime raised his eyebrows acting offended as he put down the snacks on the table. He tore open the bag of Cheetos and started munching. “So, what movie did you pick?” He sunk into the cushion a little as he watched you get comfortable on the opposite side of the couch.
“The usual,” you smiled wide at him. You picked up the remote and clicked the movie you had already chosen.
“The Exorcist? Really?” Jaime snorted a laugh as he opened his candy next.
“Yes. Oldie but a goodie.” You flicked off the lamp, draped your blanket over your legs. You started munching on your popcorn. Jaime rolled his eyes and turned his attention to the screen. He moved around a little appearing he was getting comfortable, he stretched his legs out and crossed his ankles.
“We could have picked like a comedy or something, you know?” He tossed a Cheeto up in the air and caught it with his mouth.
“What?” You turned your head to watch him perform his trick. “What’s your favorite scary movie?” You did your best to sound like the infamous Ghostface.
“Scary movies are dumb and inferior,” he followed your lead and did the same imitation. “They’re super lame and not even scary.”
“Jaime,” you pretended to whine. “This will be so good and you won't regret it,” you stuck your tongue out at him.
“This movie is so stupid. It isn’t even that interesting,” he commented as the credits began to roll.
Jaime and you tried to squeeze movie nights into your hectic schedules. He was usually the one to pick the film, but you insisted you picked this time around. He did owe you since he semi-ditched you the last time you two were supposed to have dinner. He had his reasons, but you said he could have at least called before he ran off on his mission.
“It is still one of the scariest movies in cinematic history. No one has been able to replicate the greatness of this 70’s classic,” you wagged your finger at him.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever.” Jaime rested his head against the back pillow as he continued munching on his snacks. The movie was beginning to reach those significant parts almost everyone knew. “It really isn’t that scary. It's going to be boring,” he said and dropped the chip from his hand.
“It is actually based on something real. How can that not be interesting?”
“I mean I guess that could be,” he answered squinting his eyes a little at the TV. “It’s just, whatever.”
From the corner of your eye, you could see him start to scoot a little closer in your direction. You pursed your lips and glanced at him, tilting your head a little. “You good, Reyes?” You asked as you tore open your bag of M&M’s and took a handful.
“Yes!” He quickly answered, his voice squeaking just a little. He cleared his throat and readjusted his body on the couch. “Yeah, duh. I am just trying not to follow asleep.” He shrugged his shoulders and swallowed as he averted his eyes away from the TV for a moment. You slowly nodded your head, then continued to eat your candy and watched the movie.
Jaime moved in a little closer as the scene was getting more intense. You didn’t notice exactly how close he was until you felt the corner of the blanket being tugged. “You cold?” You asked after you took a sip of your drink. He shook his head but still reached for the blanket. A small laugh escaped your mouth as you were witnessing Jaime’s reaction. The guy who said nothing scared him. “We can share this thing or I can get your own.”
“Nah, I’m good.” He tilted his head against the cushion. "It's a little boring...," he muttered.
“Are you scared?” You whispered.
It took a few moments for him to reply. “Fuck no! Like,” Jaime finally spoke. He opened his mouth to continue his comment, but no words were coming. Instead, he jerked in his seat at the exact moment when Regan’s head spun dropping his bag of Hot Cheetos. “Shit!”
You couldn’t help but burst out laughing at his reaction. This cinematic piece was one that you’ve seen more than a dozen times. It did scare you a little, but you knew the moments and didn’t have much of a reaction. Seeing Jaime react the way he did was something else and a little story you were adding into your arsenal about the Blue Beetle. “Damn, Jaime! I didn’t think this would scare you that much,” you teased and lifted up the blanket. He didn’t even need to say much and scooted closer to you, dropping the blanket over him and you.
“I just didn’t expect that! I mean - it was - like - bah,” he stuttered through his words and tried to let them roll off his shoulders. You watched him and smiled, nodding your head as if you understood what he was trying to say.
“Cálmate. Say your words slowly,” you teased and nudged him in his side teasingly. Jaime narrowed his eyes in your direction and pulled the blanket to cover him up to his shoulders. You reached over to ruffle up his hair. “I will protect you.” You winked at him and tossed a piece of popcorn at him.
“Mhm,” he muttered.
“Hey.” You poked his jaw. Jaime exhaled slightly annoyed but turned to look at you. When he did, you leaned over and pecked his lips twice. “I got you.”
“Shut up,” he murmured against your lips. Your lips curled into a smirk. You could tell he was beginning to cave, his lips twitched into a similar smirk. “Yeah, yeah.” He kissed you quickly. You smiled wide and draped your legs over his thighs. “Next time I am picking the damn movie!”

Do you have any recommendations for someone who is getting into gothic fiction, and just generally, grimy Victorian novels?
I don't know if it'd be wise to start from the very beginning of gothic fiction because the works tend to be very meandering - which I appreciate mostly, but it's not really a mode of storytelling for this fast-paced plot-driven reading landscape. If you end up liking gothic fiction, you can go there.
Gothic fiction especially older ones are categorised into 'Terror' (psychological, more interior, think of movies like The Lighthouse and Get Out) and 'Horror' (visceral, exterior, think 70s slasher films) The Monk is an early gothic work that's exemplary of the Horror branch. Witnessing the downfall and perversity of the monk/the church as an institution, the way the demonic is used as a character and the wild ending(s) that you gotta build anticipation for through that thick tome make it worth reading. Carmilla is an early vampire novel that's surprisingly very sapphic. Obviously with this being a Victorian era morality work the sapphic has to be framed as only something a monster would do and that the big strong Man must defend the femmes from, but the author allowing the emotion and the sensuality to just exist between the girls is cool. There's obviously the classics: Dracula, Frankenstein, Jekyll & Hyde, any of Edgar Allan Poe's stories, even Phantom of the Opera. I'd recommend working backwards from the things you know from pop culture so you can see the differences between the original and the interpretations.

GHOULS HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
Halloween season has arrived, and I've decided to note some of the headcanons that I've had in mind for the ghouls recently.
Here are my favorite ghouls / by elements
🪐Omega = he's not really a Halloween guy. I mean, they already wear costumes. He can't be bothered to put effort into it. Just to fit in, and because it makes his companions happy, he'll dress up as an alternative version of ghouls. He might come out of the abbey in his true form because it's the perfect opportunity for it, or just add something to his usual look that enhances the "infernal" aesthetic. In the end, he's the one ghoul that actually scares people away, even without trying.
🪐Aether = always wears handmade costumes. It's elaborated with a lot of details but comfy. Halloween is for him the best opportunity to create a look for himself that he usually wouldn't have the courage to wear daily. He might cosplay as a 70-80's rockstar for example, and you'd recognize who he's supposed to be from miles away. Also more importantly, he's the costume-nurse. He always makes sure his costume has an integrated bag or pockets for glue and stitches. Last year for example, he was a jedi, and he was very happy about being able to wear a discreet tool belt.
🪐Phantom = of course, a vampire. But he'll only wear something dark and classic. Think old horror movies. He'll have his hair pull back, very bad fake fangs, red contacts, a cape… He'll also be fully invested in his role all night, so expect to hear some old English come out of his mouth at all times. Just call him by his character's name exclusively !
⛈Zephyr = loves having costumes that include his disabilities. Although he can walk just fine, going trick-or-treating is very long and difficult for him. He decorated his wheelchair as the Scooby-Doo van last year. He's done a lot of physical therapy this year though and feels excited about trying canes instead.
⛈Cirrus = she likes opening to kids that trick-or-treat at the Abbey's doors. In consequence, she will usually wear something that'll be easy to understand for them. Can be a simple witch, Morticia, Emily from the Corpse Bride… Last year she was Maleficient. Her costumes are never modest, though. She puts a lot of work into looking believable. It's a lot of organization and stress, but she always cherishes the kids' reaction in the end.
⛈Cumulus = She's always something evil. She doesn't cosplay as anyone in particular, and only makes her own looks. She loves elaborated makeup. She can paint her whole body if she desires too. Don't ask her who she's supposed to look like, this is always an original from her collection. She's here to impress.
🌿Mountain. Mountain... = he always fails his costumes. Nothing fits him. He never plans long enough in advance for it to work. He's disappointed about it every year, and still can't manage to fix it. This year though, he finally gathered the courage to ask for help. He'll have Sunshine to help him find clothes, and Cumulus for the hair and makeup. He'd like to be a hobbit, but he's starting to think he'll be more believable if he cosplays Gandalf - of course, he's not really hobbit-sized. If he can have an excuse to smoke all night, well...
🔮Sunshine = she doesn't have time for costumes. Her main concern is to be the party's organiser. Before she joined the Project, the ghouls had never planned any kind of gathering together for Halloween. She wants to be with her family and that's the only thing that counts. She'll just put something a bit festive, do her hair and put on some "scary" makeup, (which for her is dark shadow and eyeliner). Maybe washable dye or glitter in her hair this time around ? Nothing that can make dancing and running around uncomfortable !
🔮Swiss = is there a better opportunity to be naked ? On Halloween, his sole missions are to 1.be sexy 2.dance. Whatever year it is, his shirt is always wide open and tucked in his pants to enhance his tight waist, his chest always exposed, and his feet always moving... He doesn't mind any addition of costume or makeup that will make him prettier, but never purposefully goes that way by himself. 🔮Aurora = absolutely has the most feminine costume you'll see the entire night. She cannot not be hot, but maybe not as intensely as Swiss. She's the girl that wears the bunny outfit, the Barbie outfit, the Tinkerbell or Daphne outfit... The hair is down and the skirt is mini. Her only rule is : sexy but always secure. She has to wear warm tights and good shoes. Being pretty shouldn't stop you from running, jumping, and staying up all night. Special mention : this year, since it's their first Halloween together, they want to do a hot-couple-costume.
🌊Rain = has the boring but cute costume. If you don't know him, you can't really see how it's a costume most of the time - to be honest he always looks like that. He just genuinely doesn't need more material than what he already has. He thinks dressing up is cool but hates having to spend his whole night adjusting his costume or being careful with it. Last year he was the Phantom of the Opera, but he found the mask restraining. This year he's thinking about maybe a proper suit, a hat, his usual jewels and a bit of makeup. With some luck it'll pass as a period costume.
🌊 Mist = will always hide herself under her costume. You can never recognize her. The only thing she cares about, is surprising others. If she dresses as a character, it'll be a slay version of them. This year she's doing the Grinch, so expect green manucure, a pink dress and fake eyelashes on that green fursuit. Count on her to wear bad bald caps and colored paint all over her body. She doesn't take herself too seriously and is only here to have fun.
🔥Alpha = much like Omega, doesn't care about Halloween. You'll find him doing his actual job in the Abbey, at the yearly ritual that none of the new ghouls have the decency to assist. Traditions are really lost with the young generations...
🔥Ifrit = was, is, and will always be the guy who shows his muscles. He's into action movies and old rockstars, so it's only ordinary that he dresses as such. He'll be Han Solo, or Freddy Mercury, or Wolverine. Ifrit has the softest heart out there, but he's peak masculinity when it comes to looks, and he cares about his heroes. Right now, he's into 00's sci-fi/horror and still searching for some cool costume that will stick to his skin just *right*.
🔥Finally, Dewdrop = Don't ask stupid questions. Don't joke about Halloween with him. Don't even make suggestions. He has already had everything planned since November 1st. He has notebooks full of dark designs for corpse paint that involve fake (or real ?) blood, and a wide range of colored face paints in his drawer just for that event. He'll spend his afternoon looking for the perfect color, and he'll do intricate designs with extremely thin brushes on his face before the night starts. Dewdrop needs to look like he just sacrificed something in an old forest and burnt a church. He loves the theatrics of wearing long dark robes and being covered in blood. Halloween truly is his way to express himself and explore his own graphic world.
If you come across this post and see your fave missing, feel free to add your headcanon for them.

Bachelor/ettes and Horror
How would our ladies and gentlemen fair with scary things?
Bachelors:
Sebastian -- He loves all things horror. Has opinions on every subgenre, slasher rankings, and probably some amount of memorabilia. He vastly prefers sci-fi horror (Alien, the Thing, Pandorum) or supernatural. Plays indie horror games on his computer. If the farmer is a horror hound, they will have a friend in Sebastian.
Shane -- He's not really the type to put horror on, but it's never bothered him. He likes goofy 70s-80s stuff best, and I don't think he would enjoy 'cerebral' horror. Thinks the special effects are cool. Will mix up the big slasher names.
Elliott -- It may be controversial to put him high, but I almost put him higher. He does NOT like anything gory or icky, but I think he would really love older horror from the 40s-50s and giallo films. There's some more artistic ones that he would probably like as well. He would prefer to read horror, and has read quite a few classics. It's not his favorite genre by any means, but sometimes gets a taste for it in late fall.
Sam -- He's not a fan. He's seen some big ones with Sebastian, but he's fairly squeamish and can't handle intense gore. Gets scared pretty easily. Really wishes he could handle them, his besties love it.
Alex -- Does not like horror. Doesn't understand why someone would want to feel scared. He isn't easily grossed out, but doesn't like seeing horror violence. Simply Does Not Get It.
Harvey -- He's baby. Easily scared, even when it's 50's era stuff. Never expects a jumpscare, too much empathy for violence, will think the house is haunted for two weeks after Poltergeist. He's comedic levels unable to handle anything remotely spooky.
---
Bachelorettes
Abigail -- On par with Sebastian, maybe even more into it. Loves all things grody and scary, UNLESS spiders are involved. Better than Sebastian at recommending stuff to people who don't know anything about where to start. Loves supernatural stuff best. Orders a lot of horror comics online.
Maru -- Lives with Sebastian, so he's definitely shown her a number of things way too early when she bugged him to hang out. Is not easily frightened, and finds science based stuff really interesting. Thinks gore effects are cool and is really interested in behind the scenes stuff. Fave is probably something like Reanimator or Chopping Mall.
Leah -- She's not super into scary movies, but doesn't mind them every once in a while. Likes artier stuff like Suspiria or Pan's Labyrinth.
Emily -- Not really a fan, but might watch an older movie around Spirits Eve. Like Elliott, more likely to read something with horror concepts than watch it. Would probably like House of Leaves.
Haley -- Does not like horror. Thinks all horror is gory slashers, will not open herself up to more.
Penny -- Gets so fucking scared it's not funny. They make her sick. Does not enjoy any type of horror, even some drama is too much to bear. Really only enjoys watching happy things.

I think it's interesting how the remakes of Black Christmas take it in two very different horror genre directions.
The original film, like many early slasher and proto-slasher films, goes with what I call the "anonymous killer route" - i.e. the slasher of the film is kept hidden from the audience as long as possible, ultimately being more of a force than a character. This was sort of a defining element for slasher flicks and, indeed, a lot of horror from the 70's in general (think of Jaws as a good non-slasher example). I think it stands out among early slasher films for also having a really well-defined and sympathetic cast of non-killers/victims. You feel for those sorority girls, dammit.
The 2006 sequel, by contrast, tries to re-structure the plot in the mold of the most popular slasher series, which is to say, it tries to make an Icon out of the killer in the vein of Jason or Freddy (little sidenote: I kind of consider Friday the 13th the turning point from "anonymous killer" slashers to "iconic killer" slashers - the first movie in the series is full on an anonymous killer story, but the personality they give Pamela Voorhees after the reveal of her nature in act 3, and the stinger with Jason's ghost, shifted things for the sequel, to the point where Jason not only became a character, but something of a focal point for the series from then on). And because the plot is designed to focus on the killer and try to make him an icon, the other characters get reduced to more or less one-note victims for a rising body count, and the suspense of the original is mostly traded for shocking gore. You get to see what the original Black Christmas would be under a different slasher mold.
The 2019 remake then goes an opposite route of interpretation, doubling down on the feminist elements of the original and focusing particularly hard on humanizing our non-killer characters. The villain of the piece, meanwhile, is in some ways more anonymous than the original, as this time it's not a single killer, but a whole evil fraternity that's really just the agents of the far greater evil at the core of the movie's plot: patriarchal misogyny. In this movie's case, the villain is really a force, a system of cruelty, with the killers all being its agents rather than the individual source of terror themselves. Rather than trying to refit the original story into a modern slasher mold, it looks at the themes and structure of the original and figures out a way to amp them up to eleven.
And I think that's pretty cool for an often overlooked slasher classic.

Bonus points for RB if you learned any of these dances or which is your favorite.
re-doing an old poll with more options this time.
Notes on selection process:
Like, look - there are no less than 100 really great options, but this seems like a good mix of iconic dances across the past 50 years. Also, y'all are on the younger side and haven't seen a bunch of older stuff unless it has cult classic status...sooo no Flashdance or Risky Business, for example. John Travolta is repping all his dance movies with Saturday Night Fever (my personal fave is from Pulp Fiction)
