Shadow Sensor Alarm

Shadow sensors play a crucial role in detecting movement within confined spaces. Many previously published circuits suffered from a notable drawback, utilizing only one light-dependent resistor (LDR) for shadow detection – an imperfect solution.

The following describes a simple yet improved circuit for a smart shadow sensor alarm. This circuit can discern a shadow by detecting variations in light. It employs two 5mm LDRs in conjunction with the popular LM741CN operational amplifier to activate a piezo-sounder upon detecting a "valid" shadow. The entire shadow sensor circuit can be powered by four 1.5V AA cells (6VDC) or similar DC power sources.

Notes:

Position LDR1 and LDR2 one inch apart (LDR1 —— 1 inch —— LDR2).

Diode D2 serves solely for input supply polarity protection and is not a critical component.

The lab prototype exhibits a current consumption of 2 to 3 mA (standby) and 20 to 30 mA when active. The primary component contributing to current consumption is the Piezo-Buzzer.

The Piezo-Buzzer can be substituted with a 6V low-current electromagnetic relay to drive external loads such as an electric hooter. Ensure to include a freewheeling diode (anti-parallel configuration) across the relay coil.
