So ... here’s the thing about season 8 of WCTH
I’m tired, friends.
Exhausted, honestly. And I need to talk about it. If you are also exhausted (or just love discussion) feel free to comment/message me about it.
Where to start? How about here: I love and adore Nathan Grant. I find him to be an exceptionally dimensional and compelling character. He’s fascinating, and honestly there’s still so much about him that’s a mystery. I love that he’s protective - even over protective sometimes, because that’s an interesting flaw and I’d love to know more about why that is - and has a temper, and overreacts. I love that he spends the first two seasons kind of unsure and awkward in some situations, and totally in control and and certain in others. I like that he’s kind of the strong silent type, and that he’s rather private and plays things close to the vest. There are a lot of things about Nathan that I relate to, and that resonate with me.
So, I am tired of how he’s been treated this season. Because I love him, and I’m tired of seeing all of these obstacles being thrown at him one after the other. I’ve enjoyed his storyline, and I do enjoy adversity because I think that shows a person’s character better than anything else, but c’mon now. And I’m not just talking as Elizabeth’s suitor (though that is also super frustrating). This season, we have seen Nathan handle: Allie’s father; an inquiry that almost cost him his job; having his heart and hope crushed; having to see Elizabeth and Lucas everywhere together; doing his job as a Mountie and protecting the town while also being a first responder to emergencies like the oil derrick explosion; parent and adopt Allie (!!!!!); admit his mistake and apologize when Elizabeth calls him out for not attending the teacher conference; and who knows what else. And he’s basically done all of that alone. He has Allie, of course, but where is another adult presence in his life to be his friend? We haven’t really seen much of him and Bill in that capacity this season. Where is someone to care about Nathan and his well being? Elizabeth has all of her friends (Rosemary, Lee, Bill), and Lucas, and even her tertiary relationships (like Clara, Florence, etc) that she gets to lean on and interact with - but it’s like it’s Nathan and Allie against the world. Where is a friend to check on Nathan and make sure he’s okay, or offer to listen if he needs to talk, or even to show up and sit in companionable silence? Why does Nathan have to bear all of this alone? I say alone because Allie is a child, and while she’s definitely on his side in everything, that’s not the same as having a confidant. So, as someone who loves Nathan, I am tired of seeing him weather all of these storms alone. Where is the breaking point? Are we going to get a scene sometime in the next few episodes where we get to see him be upset, or angry, or sad, or just ... worn out? Because Elizabeth apparently gets to (basically) ambush/attack him in the next episode, in front of a whole bunch of people. Does that mean we get to see him break, finally, just a little bit? Just let SOMEONE care for him, P L E A S E.
That brings me to my next point. I am not excited for 8x09. I’m so over this "Nathan has a secret and it probably has to do with Jack” thing. Can we get it out there and get on with it already? Personally, I think that whatever Nathan tells Elizabeth is going to hurt her - because I think it will be something along the lines of Jack doing something wrong, and that’s why he was in the accident. I don’t think he caused the accident, exactly. Maybe he disobeyed orders, or went somewhere he shouldn’t have, or something along those lines, and that’s why he was there when the accident happened. I think Elizabeth won’t believe him, and that’s why she’s so distraught and looks so angry in the promo. I don’t think Nathan did anything wrong, and I don’t think he was lying when he said he didn’t know Jack - I think Jack did something that led to his death and Nathan knows about it somehow, and she’s going to hate that.
Now, I generally love Elizabeth, and I still do, but I haven’t really liked her this season. And that ambush of Nathan? It upsets me. At this point, if she does choose Nathan (and I still believe that she will) it’s on her to do the emotional work of showing him (and Allie, and us) that she loves him. Because we haven’t spent this season uncertain of Nathan or how he feels or where he stands. Allie said it herself in tonight’s episode: “she’s supposed to care about you, and me.” If we don’t start to see some major turn around from Elizabeth soon and she basically chooses Nathan in the last five minutes of the last episode, I am going to be pissed. I will feel robbed and cheated. But honestly, I won’t be surprised. Because we know it won’t be in episode 8, and my guess is it won’t be in episode 9 (I think she’ll kind of avoid everyone in that episode and do a lot of introspection and basically keep to herself) then that leaves only three episodes. Three episodes to make us (as in Nathan and the audience) feel like she actually does care - that she loves him - after nine episodes of behaving like she doesn’t. I’ll say it: that’s not fair. It sucks, actually. Now, I’m sure the writers and creators will try to tell us that it’s because we’ll have all of next season (and however many others) to explore Nathan and Elizabeth’s relationship and be shown how much she cares, and while that’s true it still sucks. I still feel cheated. I will still leave season 8 feeling exhausted.
Also, I am disappointed that Elizabeth has apparently forgotten that she’s spent almost three years now cultivating a relationship with Allie independent of Nathan. Elizabeth is the only adult female presence/support structure in Allie’s life. She has been Allie’s confidant, her sounding board, mentor, friend ... and now she’s somehow not? Not only has the love triangle fallout made Nathan feel like she doesn’t care, but Allie as well? I hate that. One of the key tenets of Elizabeth’s character is how much she loves her children, and we have seasons of evidence of her caring for their emotional needs and supporting them outside of school and her role as their teacher - and now she’s just taken that away from Allie? I hope Allie gets to be mad at Elizabeth in 8x09. I hope we get to see Allie be mad at her, and that she lets Elizabeth know that she’s mad at her and doesn’t let her apologize/off the hook immediately. Someone should get to be mad at Elizabeth. Especially since we know how she’s going to behave in 8x09.
There’s probably more, but like I said ... I’m just so tired of this season. I don’t know that I’ll watch 8x09 when it airs. Maybe I’ll wait for spoilers on tumblr and then decide whether or not I want to watch the whole thing. Maybe, in the meantime, I’ll just write a whole bunch of fix-it fic. Because let’s be honest - there’s a lot that needs to be fixed.

Reveling in Richonne
#154: The People We Love (9x14)
Michonne Grimes will always fight for the Grimes. You just trust with Michonne that they’re gonna be okay cuz she fights for the people she loves. And that’s what gets expressed in these final moments of 9x14.
Michonne and Judith had that sweet moment on those rocks and I love that we get a second heartfelt heart to heart from them this episode. They are why I stuck around this show after all, so I’ll take as many moments between them as I can get.
And I hope we get a lot more mom/daughter moments in Michonne’s last season coming up that further illustrate how Judith couldn’t have a better mom. The things her mom has done for her, it’s just a testament to the ultimate love of a parent. 😊
Tumblr media
In the moment on those rocks, that’s where Judith got to express herself and now in this conversation Michonne gets to take the floor and express her side of things, which i appreciate.
And this really deep moment between Michonne and Judith comes in the present as they stand over Carl’s grave. 😭
It’s emotional seeing the two of them here paying their respects to Carl specifically. Carl loved them both so much and as we know from his final episode, he wanted these two to get each other through.
Carl told Judith to listen to Michonne and asked Michonne to be strong for Judith and here we see them honor that.
Tumblr media
(Side note: It’s super cute that Michonne and Judith are wearing similar outfits with a denim jacket and pink/peach colored shirt. I love that.)
Michonne starts by saying, “Your father and I dug this together. And that day, standing right here, I made a promise to never bury another child again.”
It’s heartbreaking hearing Michonne recall the day her and Rick had to dig this grave for Carl. We saw those clips of R&M digging that grave and how distraught Michonne felt. So it’s deep knowing that as we watched Michonne bury Carl in 8x09 she was promising herself never again. That as long as she lives she’d make sure her kids live. Whatever it takes.
As much as Michonne’s heart was breaking so soon after losing Carl, it’s powerful to know that she was already building this resolve to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Already believing she could do everything in her power to prevent another loss of a child. You know at that point she considered Judith her daughter so she was definitely thinking of her first and foremost, and how even though death surrounded them constantly, she’d ensure that Judith lives.
Michonne then gets emotional and vulnerable and says, “But then your father was gone. And I was…lost.” 🥺
Tumblr media
Utterly heart shattering. Y’all, hearing this hurt. Magnets aren’t meant to be apart at all. Let alone six years. And Michonne has gone through the losses of many people during her time on the show, but with Rick that loss was a special level of painful because in losing him she lost a huge part of her. So it makes since that she acknowledge how lost she was afterwards.
We didn’t see the days that directly followed Rick’s absence but it breaks my heart to think about how Michonne spent those days/months/years feeling lost without him. Y’all, as hard as it is to know Michonne felt lost without Rick, it’s deep to see how connected the two were and how even six years later she’s still so clearly in love with him.
Judith looks up at Michonne with tears in her eyes cuz the rule is true; when your mom cries you cry. 👌🏽 Michonne continues, saying “And then you were lost and I was scared. More scared than I have ever been. Before or since.” 💔
Once again my heart shatters over this line. It is really significant to have Michonne say this was the most scared she’d been before or since.  In the seasons she’s been on the show there’s been a lot of stressful and scary things she’s been through and yet losing Judith was what scared her more than any of those other things. Michonne loves this little girl so much.
Tumblr media
Also I really appreciate Michonne getting to say she was scared. People seem to forget that’s an emotion Michonne’s allowed to have and act out of, just like everyone else. Of course as a parent, the kidnapping of her daughter would have her absolutely terrified and also scarred in more ways than one. That would make anybody switch up a bit and get highly on the defense when it comes to protecting their children.
Michonne’s protective cuz she lost her sons and then temporarily had to feel what it was like to have lost her daughter and she doesn’t ever want to lose her again. She’s already had to bury a kid twice and it’s horrible cuz I’m sure after returning to Alexandria with all the kids, sis then had to be nervous if she’d have to lose another child with wondering if RJ would make it after everything Jocelyn and those kids put her through while pregnant. After all that trauma she endured honestly people are lucky she didn’t go more off the deep end, and still has a sound head on her shoulders.
I like that Michonne is vulnerable with Judith about not just what she did and what happened but how it made her feel. And it’s deep to see Judith shed tears and feel for her mom as she finally gets to understand this trauma from Michonne’s perspective. Cuz Judith was there when that Jocelyn stuff went down but she wasn’t there.
Michonne thought she had to carry this secret and burden for everyone but there’s something liberating about her realizing she can be transparent with Judith about more things. Cuz Michonne had expressed the whole I protect you thing to Judith, but Judith is getting older and is ready to hear more and see more sides of her mom.
I mean she wants to defend her mom too, cuz when Magna was outside their house in 9x06, Judith was ready with the strap for Magna lol. She sat on those steps ready to post up with that gun like...
Tumblr media
Michonne goes onto say, “And I wasn’t the only one (who was scared). So we decided to make this place only about the people who lived here.”
Y’all...hold up wait a minute. This made me so upset cuz I was like this means that multiple people knew what went down, felt at least an inkling of what Michonne felt, and agreed on this decision to make the community more isolated. She wasn’t the only one. Multiple people! And yet, those multiple people were nowhere to be found in this time jump so I was looking around like...
Tumblr media
Cuz they sure did seem to say nothing and let Michonne carry the brunt of this on her own and be the only one vilified. And for not standing up and defending Michonne and their joint decision to close things off, someone needs to give them a serious talking to and/or whooping.
Plus it totally adds up that it would’ve been a more collective decision too cuz Michonne’s not a dictator and she wouldn’t have closed things off had there not been supporters of the idea. Those people and parents are forever indebted to her. And the fact that Michonne is still so committed to this place shows she’s doing a great job both raising her kids and this ungrateful community.
Michonne then acknowledges that only being about their own is “not what Carl or your dad gave their lives to create. But it kept you and RJ safe. That’s what I wanted. That is all I wanted.”
At the end of the day, before Michonne is Head of Security or the unspoken leader of Alexandria, Michonne is a mother. And mother’s do hard things if it means it’ll protect their children. She said in 9x06 how she watched Rick’s sole focus be about keeping Carl safe and how she’s adopted that mindset with their remaining children.
Not once has Michonne’s intent been malicious or divisive, it’s just that she’s a mother and all she wants and wanted is to keep her kids safe. Regardless of how the decision would reflect on her or how hard it would be to close off from the others because she loves and cares about them so much (and honestly sometimes more than they seem to love and care about her, smh). She was willing to go to extremes and trade being liked and supported for the sake of her kids.
Michonne put the kids first because who wouldn’t? I think the majority of parents would do the same. Plus Rick and Carl gave their lives to create a future. And kids are the future. So Michonne got laser focused on making sure the kids had an environment that protected them at all costs.
In an ideal world I know Michonne would want to still be welcoming and all, but after the trauma she chose to honor being strong for Judith even if people don’t’ understand it.🏽 Even though everyone both in show and out of show should’ve been did understood.
Tumblr media
It’s tough seeing how Michonne feels the weight of honoring so many people. She wants to protect her kids and community. She wants to honor what her husband and son gave their lives to create. She wants to honor her daughter’s thoughts and opinions.
She wants to keep everyone alive, be it literally or in memory. And that’s a lot for one person to carry and so I hope we finally get to see more people take that load off Michonne and genuinely be there for her and honor her the way she deserves in her final season.
So then Michonne stoops down and looks up at Judith in such a humbling position, and she smiles through tears and says, “You were right. We have to protect the people we love. All the people we love. And we will.”
Tumblr media
Michonne is the best mom. I love that Michonne makes Judith stronger but also Judith makes Michonne stronger. And Michonne continues to show that she’s willing to really hear Judith out and come around to seeing things her way. She stoops down to Judith’s level to show I hear you. I’m listening. 👌🏽☺️ She’s willing to take leaps towards change for the sake of her daughter like the magnificent mom she is. 😊👌🏽
And a super subtle thing I noticed in this moment is that before Michonne looks at Judith she low key looks down at Carl’s grave when she says “you were right.” It makes me emotional cuz it’s like she’s saying it to both of them. To Judith and Carl. 😭
Cuz for Carl she’s saying to him; I might’ve steered from the original vision a bit but you were right and I’m ready to go after it again. We’ve gotta protect all the people we love and think bigger picture.
Carl entrusted to Michonne this vision cuz he knew she’d fight to make his vision reality. And she always has. Starting with making sure everybody got their Carl letters, even Negan.
One of the sweetest things about Michonne and Carl’s relationship was the way she didn’t write him off as just a kid, and with Judith it’s the same. She hears her out and wants to try and take big leaps to honor what they’d want.
It’s meaningful that Judith does sort of help bring her back to the boldness they have to have to love and protect people regardless of risk. But it makes a lotta sense why she’d feel like the risk was too large before this.
And while I so admire Michonne’s resolve to protect the people she loves, I remember watching this and saying, “But who protects Michonne?”
Tumblr media
Cuz sis needs someone to be resolved to look out for her too. She had that person in Rick, but without him it feels like everyone has an expectation for her to help them rather than vice versa.
I know she can protect herself of course, but with Rick gone, who’s the person who looks out for Michonne the way she looks out for and fights for everybody else?
Like I don’t think the moral of this story should just be “Michonne has learned to take care of everyone again”. She’s done that and is doing that. To me there needed to be more emphasis from this show about those in TF who dropped their responsibility to take care of and be there for Michonne. Especially during her most vulnerable time when she needed them most.
She goes through the most trauma and then is expected to just put that aside in order to help patch up everybody else’s stuff, otherwise she’s the “difficult” one??
Tumblr media
Not here for that. And I’m not saying she shouldn’t have the heart she has to care for all the people. I admire that. I just think a lot more people need to come to this same conclusion when it comes to being a good friend and family member towards Michonne.
I genuinely believe I can think of at least one scene between Michonne and pretty much anyone from TF where she showed love, care, and support to them. And Michonne deserves that same energy back.
So then Michonne stands up and takes Judith’s hand and they walk off hand in hand and it’s just beautiful. 😭
Truly, they’re both better for having each other in their life. And it really feels like Rick and Carl live on through their beautiful bond.  😌
Tumblr media
I think about all the times Michonne has taken Rick’s hand, and now she takes Judith’s hand and they’re a comfort to each other like R&M were. 😭You know Rick would be so proud and over the moon to see the bond his girl’s have.
To put it simply, the Grimes girls are...
Tumblr media
Michonne, Judith, and RJ were the best way to reset the series cuz it keeps the focus on what one of the show’s original premises was which is; a parent trying to raise their kid in an apocalypse. (Side note: I hope Rick gets to find these kids while they’re still young. 🙏🏽)
Also shout out to Cailey cuz she did some great acting in this scene without even uttering a word. 👏🏽👏🏽👏That girl is talented. And she’s also very smart as this comment shows...
Tumblr media
So then this lovely mom and daughter ride over to the fair and they’re all smiley which is super cute. ☺️
Tumblr media
Judith asks if her wound will leave a scar and Michonne is so sweet and supportive when she says, “No, but it’s okay if it does.” I love it. 🥰
Michonne knows firsthand that sometimes scars are just proof that you can and will do anything to protect the ones you love, and it’s proof you fought and survived. They show that you can make it. And I think that’s how Michonne’s come to view her x scar. As long as people you love are living then the scars are worth it.💯
Tumblr media
Y’all, I just know the reoccurring direct quote from Judith’s mind has got to be...
Tumblr media
As they ride through the woods they find Daryl and Connie and co. They all smile and hop in and head off to what will certainly be imminent disaster lol, otherwise known as the fair. 😂
Tumblr media
But at least they’re all happy right now so I’ll at least be happy they had this moment to enjoy.
Tumblr media
And that’s the analysis of everything from “Scars”.
I love all the beats Danai got to play in this episode. 👏🏽The mom jumped out and was so believable. She got in that mama bear mode real quick and I was here for it.
I knew Michonne and Danai would deliver in a Michonne-centered episode. And she delivered more than Santa on Christmas.
Tumblr media
Danai got to shine like the star she is in this heavy episode. The range. The phenomenal delivery. She has so many layers to everything she says and does. It’s excellence. 💯 #QueenInEVERYWay
And don’t get me wrong I don’t like Michonne suffering and in pain at all. I hope we never have to see her get beat up again. No more Michonne brutality. 🙅🏽‍♀️I don’t love the episode for that. I love it for showcasing Michonne’s versatility, resilience, and vulnerability. I love that it illustrated the love she has for Rick and her kids. I appreciate it highlighting this multi-dimensional fascinating character and that we got to learn more details about the queen this episode.
So TWD, keep the Michonne-centric episodes coming in her final season but no more putting Michonne through trauma. No more abuse in her final season. Let her go to the movies. Let her find Rick. Let the Grimes family reunite. Give us a movie that’s five hours of R&M living life with their kids and then call it a wrap lol. 😋
I hope all the range and gloriousness of Danai gets highlighted more and more in her last run as Michonne in season ten. 🙏🙏🏽
What I most appreciate is that Rick’s presence is so kept alive through Michonne and Judith and their moments together like the ones in this episode. Y’all, Richonne won’t ever stop blessing us. 🙌🏽😭💯

8x09: Analysis
Good morning! How did everyone like the episode last night? Today I'm going to talk about broad plot points. Tomorrow I'll do a post about the details.
Tumblr media
I thought it was a beautiful episode. A really good send off for Carl. I cried several times.
***Warning: Spoilers for 8x09 about in this episode. Don’t read until you’ve watched! You’ve been warned!***
Carl
5x09 Parallels. I've said several times I thought there would be parallels between this episode and 5x09, where Tyreese died. There weren't as many as I expected, but they were there. The biggest one was seeing Rick and Michonne dig Carl's grave at the beginning, even though we didn’t actually see him die until the end.
Tumblr media
Very similar to Ty’s death. We saw the grave being dug at the beginning of 5x09, but didn't understand whose grave it was until the end. In that case, we had no idea Ty would die (unless we read spoilers) until the end of the episode. The difference here was that we knew Carl would die when his bite was revealed in 8x08.
Tumblr media
Carl told Judith that he didn't beat the world, as Lori said he would. I have to say I disagree. He was bitten. Of course he still beat the world in his own way. But he said to everyone, as he was dying, to recognition, especially, showed that almost outgrown the world. It was his own special kind of transcendence. In a way, that’s a parallel to Tyreese too, as Tyreese died thinking about forgiveness and peace.
Huge emphasis on the fact that he got to say goodbye. In the flashbacks, Michonne left him a note saying “I'm sorry I didn't say goodbye” for when she left with Rosita to see the Sanctuary.
Tumblr media
Of course, she DID get to say goodbye because she made it back in time. They talked about goodbyes several times throughout the episode. Remember that Beth hated goodbyes, and no one really got to say goodbye to her because her death was so sudden. Major anti-parallels there. Of course, it's all-important that he got to say goodbye and we saw his burial.
It's important that we saw the flashbacks at all. We have major precedence for this. When they don't show us something, they always flash back to it later. It. For example, in S4 we saw Ricky kick Carol out of the prison. In S5, they showed us flashbacks to what happened to her during that missing time. The same thing is true here. And it wasn't just Carl's point of view that we flashback to. We also saw flashbacks how the Saviors escaped the sanctuary. Before, Rick was imprisoned at the junkyard, and when he returned, he didn't know what happened. So it flashed back to Morgan's point of view as well, showing what happened what we missed.
Tumblr media
This is important because it shows that everything we missed with Beth will have to be shown eventually. They ALWAYS eventually show us events that are skipped. There's a lot of unexplained things around Beth, the biggest ones being unexplained stuff that happened the Grady, and of course those missing 17 days after Coda.
Tumblr media
I also thought it was interesting that he that they juxtaposed Carl’s words with Morgan's brutality. I’ll come back to this, but we could see Carl's goodness and transcendence and then they put it side-by-side with Morgan and his cold, rage-driven killing.
Carl talked about 3x16! Guys, this is huge! We some of the dialogue in the trailer, so I’ve already touched on this when it comes to callbacks to S4, but him talking about 3x16 is pretty much a confirmation everything I wrote in my Beth Greene was Always Gimpel's Sheriff post, and a lot of the stuff both me and @thegloriouscollectorlady have been talking about lately. Carl talked about shooting the Woodbury kid in 3x16.
Tumblr media
Not only was Beth present, which we would read into any way, but more importantly, it's what led to Rick becoming a farmer and the entire arc in 4a. I'll talk a lot more about this later this week, but we’re seeing major story arcs from S4 come full circle this season. It’s extremely significant and it makes me super happy.
Carl gives Judith the hat. I don’t think I need to tell everyone how significant that was. The sheriff will live on, specifically in the little one that Beth always took care of. I remember back when 5x10 first aired, I noted that Carl took care of Judith. He even used the sheriff's hat to protect her from the rain.
So Beth took care of Judith most of her life. When she disappeared Carl stepped in that role more fully, taking on Judah's care almost entirely while they were on the road. I feel like they tried to have Carl specifically step into that role, which Beth previous occupied. Now they put the sheriff's hat on Judith, who has only ever been worn by few other characters. (Rick, Carl, Beth)
Tumblr media
Now Daryl has assumed the role. We knew he would bc of the trailer, but it’s significant that his attitude wasn’t one of sadness about taking Judith. It wasn't something he had to do, it was something he wanted to do. He was very firm and confident about it. He picked up Judith, sheriff's hat and all, and, wearing his vest, walked out with her. I thought it was really interesting the way the camera focused on his back. We can almost see this is a return to S4 Daryl. He's confident and strong, he's got his best back, and he's caring for the "new sheriff." So we don't know exactly where this will lead, but symbolically it's very significant.
Remember those wings have always marked him as a guardian and protector, which is why, symbolically, he needed to regain the vest before he took over protecting Judith.
Finally, Carl actually died with the sunrise.
Tumblr media
So now we’ve gotten through the night, and we have a new day. There were several parallels to Andrea's death. Carl shot himself, rather than waiting to succumb to the fever. The other thing I noticed is that Rick and Michonne stood outside on the porch and heard the shot. That's almost exactly what happened with Andrea's death. Even though Michonne stayed with Andrea, will the viewers didn't see her shoot herself. We saw Daryl and the others outside the door and their devastated reactions to hearing the shot.
Tumblr media
So what does this mean for TD? I hope it means that with this new day we’ll see Beth next episode. I also want to point out that Andrea's that happened in 3x16, which was mentioned here a lot. Almost like they’re trying to align this episode with 3x16. In the next episode, 4x01, we got the Bethyl hug. So I’m really, really hoping, that we’ll get at least the beginning of Beth’s return in the next episode.
Siddiq
Siddiq is a freaking doctor! That, we did not see coming. In the comic books, Siddiq is a fisherman and a construction worker, not a doctor. This is something they are doing for the show. We don't see any evidence that he knows how to cure bites, but he did talk about treating one, at least insofar as reducing the fever and making the patient more comfortable. He’s the first person we’ve ever heard talk about treating a bite at all. That’s a big deal. We need to watch this story line closely.
Tumblr media
Honoring Carl. Siddiq talked about honoring Carl. He said because Carl saved him, he would honor Carl by doing whatever he could to help TF. We don't know exactly why yet, but from the trailer, he, Daryl and Rosita go on a mission that takes them through the swamp. So whatever Siddiq is up to, he thinks it will help TF in some. I repeat, I really think something about Siddiq will both bring Beth back into the picture, and perhaps help TF win the war. That's why Carl’s sacrifice will be worth it.
Tumblr media
The last time we heard a lot of talk about honoring someone was right after Beth's death. To honor Beth, Rick wanted to take Noah home to Virginia. And he did. @thegloriouscollectorlady pointed out that while there's definitely a parallel here, it's kind of an anti-parallel. In S5, TF honored Beth by taking a in stranger (Noah) and doing something for them, because it's what Beth wanted. In S8, the stranger (Siddiq) is going to honor Carl by helping TF. So it's the same thing, but in reverse. With that being the case, let's hope we see the reverse of Coda next. Like this represents 5x09 and perhaps were moving backward toward Coda and the opposite result.
Carol and Henry. I had a major epiphany during this episode. In THIS POST I said that in order for Carol's arc to resolve, she needed to figure out how to love and nurture another child as she did Sophia. Last night, I realized I’m missing one big element. Henry kill Gavin, which was disturbing. Go back and watch that scene. Watch the reaction of all the adults. Ezekiel was merely shocked. Carol was so horrified she turned away for a minute. Morgan looked like he might throw up.
Tumblr media
While it’s understandable because he obviously holds Gavin responsible for Benjamin’s death, the way the show portrayed this was as something very dark. It came across as a callback to Lizzie, who also had no problem killing the living. It’s like they’re trying to say Henry is straying onto a dark path. Carol wouldn’t be able to help but think of Lizzie when this happened, which is why she was so angry at him, and Ezekiel couldn’t understand. So, it's not just a matter of her loving the child, but her saving him from becoming like Lizzie. She failed with Lizzie. She should've seen what was wrong and didn't, but perhaps she will with Henry.
I’ll talk about this more later in the week as well, but for now, it’s important that Carol, Ezekiel and Morgan were there. We’ve thought since S7 that Carol and Ezekiel will be parents to Henry, but it’s interesting that Morgan is entangled in this too. He and Carol both lost biological children, specifically because they failed to save them (a theme between Rick and Carl in this episode). Now these three adults all saw Henry kill a man. It doesn’t matter whether or not Gavin deserved it. The point is that Henry did it without hesitation and wasn’t as bothered by it as he should have been. That’s not good. So now these three need to figure out how to save Henry in the same way Rick saved Carl in 4a.
The two, final “shocking” scenes we hoped would be Beth. I'm pretty sure the one the blogger referred to is the one that showed Negan at Alexandria. That's what she meant about the future. It was part of Carl’s vision and shows that he wants Negan to actually become part of the community, integrate with Alexandria and have everyone work together.
Tumblr media
Sorry to keep saying this, but I will do a separate post on how significant this is, especially where S4 is concerned. I don't know that Negan will ever actually integrate into TF’s community the way Carl wants, but this will most definitely drive the plot forward for Rick.
The second scene is still very unexplained. Remember that in 8x01, we saw two flashes forward: Rick’s old man coda (which I now have to call Carl's) and then the one where Rick’s eyes are red-rimmed and the plate-glass crosses hang above him. We always figured that might be Carl's funeral. It's not. They buried Carl in this episode, and then showed that scene separately. It’s definitely not the same thing.
Tumblr media
Rick sits against a tree, bleeding from a wound on his ribs. He has blood all over his hand. Honestly, it looks like a scene where he could be dying. (I still don't think he actually will; I feel like they’re trying to make us believe that. I could be wrong, of course.)
I had a somewhat disturbing thought while re-watching last night. Perhaps Rick will try and make nice with Negan to fulfill Carl's best wishes, and Negan will betray him by either stabbing or shooting him in the ribs. Maybe that's what we’re seeing in this scene. That would explain why he says, "my mercy prevailed over my wrath." It sounds like he's very resigned to his own death. It's like he's saying, “well, at least I was merciful, as Carl wanted.” This is just me musing over what it might be. We really have no idea.
I've never thought that Rick would die, and still don't. But remember THIS POST about Dawn's back story and how it's going to relate to Beth's future arc. Dawn actually killed Capt. Hanson. I’ve always said Beth won’t do that, because she's a much better person than Dawn. But maybe it's not about Beth killing Rick. Maybe someone else will either kill him or try to. Whether he's dead or just severely incapacitated, someone else will have to step into leadership. Based on the back story and foreshadowing surrounding Beth at Grady, it will be her. Either way, it would be tied to Carl, Carl's death, and Carl's last wishes. But again, this is just conjecture.
Overall, I really loved this episode. I thought it was beautiful. All the symbolism in it, which I'll go over in more detail tomorrow, makes me as hopeful as ever for TD. What did everyone else think?

Note
Based on Chandler's father's comments, he already knew his fate by the time the cast did the SDCC panel. The cast was still handling the stuntman death and prob only CR, Andy, and Gimple knew at that point; assuming 8x08 and 8x09 were shot after SDCC. This all seems like a clustf**k on the part of either Gimple and/or TPTB. If the 3 year rumour is true, then either AMC didn't want to pony up more money for an adult CR and/or Gimple is taking the flack for this decision.
Yeah, I felt extra bad for him when I realized that, because isn’t that when he talked about being excited to do the upcoming plots in the comics? So he just had to be out here lying to everybody. And I’d noticed that Andy seemed to be in a weird mood at the panel, but I figured it was about John Bernecker’s death. And it probably was some of that, but also this. So yeah, I’m sure most of them didn’t know, and that sucks. I’m not gonna defend Gimple, because I don’t know that man from Adam, but it is a bit surprising that he would blatantly lie to Chandler and tell him to go ahead and apply to college in Georgia and buy a house if he knew there was even a chance they’d kill his character. Like, how do you do that to a child just starting his life? I don’t know. It seems like something changed unexpectedly, maybe not fully in his control, but that’s me being an optimist. It’s very possible that he just ain’t shit. 😄 I know similar things happened to other cast members, but I don’t think this is the same as what they did to Emily Kinney (a minor character who was lucky to get as much shine as she did) or even Laurie Holden. Granted, she had more of a reason to believe she’d stick around, but an 8-year contract doesn’t guarantee you’ll be on the show that long. Everyone knows that. What happened to Chandler is I think the worst I’ve seen. So I just hope it isn’t as callous as it seems.

Blue Bloods 8x09 Ramble
“Pain Killers”
Spoilers, etc.
..
..
..
..
..
If “Pick your Poison” was the episode in which all the bad stuff piled up like a garbage strike in its third week, this episode was the one in which everyone had reasonable but opposing points to make. Fitting that the final scene was simply Jamie sighing and scratching his crinkled brow in utter resignation.
The presence of paroled or post-sentence child molesters in the community is one of the most divisive topics imaginable, whether one is a parent or not. Some believe that they should never be released into the community. Some see them as fair game and social punching bags. Some believe that, having served out their sentence and living under a lifetime of tight restrictions, they should live as any other citizen, including being legally protected from assault. The family dinner table discussion was, shall we say, lively and could have gone on forever with no backing down on either side: Danny, Henry and Jack firmly in the vigilante-sympathetic camp, Erin, Nicky and Jamie (the lawyers and maybe-someday lawyer) in the legal-right-to-exist camp. (Once again, the kids are finally allowed to have adult opinions and remind the adults that they are quite aware of the world. Right on.) And Frank in the middle with the somewhat bizarre claim that he would likely have issued a similar pre-emptive beat-down on a ex-con child molester living nearby, “But then walked himself to the nearest precinct and turned himself in, because the laws are there to stop people doing that.” (paraphrased) Still shaking my head over that equivocating little hypothetical. People don’t generally do that. I rather think Frank would’ve let fly with this meat hooks, been assisted in covering it up by his colleagues, and carried it around with him for the rest of his life, some days feeling justified and some days feeling like a bad cop and servant of the law.
Even professional cops have a huge division of opinion, as Eddie and Jamie noted. Eddie was right to wonder if they could be held liable for harassment if they questioned the guy without a reason, or warned him they were paying attention. Jamie was right to let the guy know that his neighbours were circulating information about him, and that the police were aware of the situation. He might’ve driven the point home a little harder that the police were there to protect him, too, from bodily harm. But as the fellow later noted - he was half hoping to be beaten to death rather than live out his life without absolution, universally hated. (Also, nice split-second timing with these two, as usual. Jamie, mildly: “You wanna wait in the car?” Eddie: quick glance of “I’d really rather sit this one out, but you are my partner and I got your back.”)
Nice to see Erin and Abetemarco again! I’ve missed them. Even with two lines in the entire episode, Abetemarco delivered his usual deceptively simple depth of feeling and support of Erin - I do love how he does that. And we now know he’s a father of three. I bet his kids are charming and goofy.
Baez’ fentanyl OD through fingertip contact with evidence was horrifying, because it’s happened. I know of five cops so far who have experienced contact exposure to the most minute traces of opioids and required hospitalization. Danny (Donnie) really came through as a frantic cop trying to stop kids OD’ing (who are the age of his own kids), and haul his partner through a week in a coma only a few months after the death of his wife. The smarmy little prep school dealer and druggie buddies, of course, had parents who are lawyers. While I would not have wished death on either of them, it was sweet to see the dealer’s face fall when he realized he’d painted himself into a corner.
Interesting to hear the doctor’s side of the opioid crisis debate, for once. (And I loved the actress playing the ER doctor!) Doctors are trying to provide better health outcomes, and proper pain control is certainly part of that. (And many with chronic pain are still routinely turned away and treated as drug addicts for even asking for the opioid pain control they need to function at all.) As the doctor noted, they don’t have the resources to monitor post-operative patients all the time. (i.e. administering pain meds during single-dose outpatient visits.) But it does place doctors unwittingly in the drug pipeline, as they prescribe opioids that patients then turn around and sell.
There was a third plotline involving the Governor, State Troopers and a logjam in in the tunnel due to random police checks, but honestly I zapped through it because it was boring.

Clock Analysis Part 3 - What Episode We’ll See Beth in and Why
Okay gang! New episode tomorrow and I’m super excited. So my guess for when we’ll see Beth is 8x10. It’s  based on a lot of evidence I and my fellow theorists have found.
The first is simply the sequence of events I’ve mentioned before in THIS POST and THIS POST. In 5x03, Bob dies from a walker bite. The clock in the room when he dies points to 8x08, which is when we found out Carl was dying from the same cause, so we can parallel the two. The VERY NEXT episode, Slabtown 5x04, is where Beth wakes up. So if Carl dies in 8x09, it would make sense for Beth to show up in the next episode, 8x10.
Tumblr media
Not to mention, we always saw the music box as a symbol of Beth’s awakening (see my account name ;D). And then there’s the rule of threes. 8x10 is exactly three seasons after 5x10. Now, we did say this about 8x08. The MSF made sense to us as a time for her to show up because it would have been three seasons after Coda. But I read something the other day—a random article about 8x09) that talked about how death is especially common in TWD’s MSFs. I think that’s applicable here. The MSFs are about death, so perhaps we were always wrong about that. They wouldn’t bring her back in a MSF because those are reserved for major deaths, and this will be the opposite of that.
Historically (in the show) episodes 10 are often about life. 4x10, Inmates, Glenn survived at the prison. He had a mini death fake out on the bus, and in 4x10, they revealed him as being alive. (X, X, X).
Tumblr media
5x10 was the music box, and all about the survivors coping. 6x10 is where Rick and Daryl meet Jesus. Aside from the obvious JESUS symbolism, this is them finding a new community, new allies, and more survivors. Life! 7x10 is New Best Friends. There’s not one big example in this episode, but rather lots of little ones you could find. And it’s kinda built into the title, right?
So all of the above just shows that it makes sense for her to appear in 8x10. But it’s not all super-concrete evidence. So now, let’s look at—you guessed it—the clocks.
Let’s start with Slabtown, because that can be a discussion all by itself. Remember that as Beth wakes up, we see the second hand of Beth’s clock tick from 4 to 5, from 7 to 8, and then to 10.
Tumblr media
The prevalent theory was always that these numbers represented the episodes relevant to her story line in S5. (Which was yet more evidence that 5x10 was important and about her in some way: music box.) And I still think to some extent that’s true. It’s too much of a coincidence that she was in episodes 5x04, 5x07, 5x08, and then the music box woke up in 5x10 to simply dismiss it.
But now I also think it’s more than that. M-Nonny and others have argued that perhaps the 8 and 10 on Beth’s clock point to her awakening in 8x10. That actually makes a lot of sense. Why? Because the time the clock reads is 5:20, which points to 5x04, and this IS episode 5x04. That creates a tie between 5x04 and 8x10. So in 5x04, Beth awakens directly after Bob died from a walker bite. It would, again, just make a perfect parallel if she shows up in the episode right after Carl dies from a walker bite.
Tumblr media
In terms of the numbers being tied to episodes, I’m going to take it a step further. I don’t have detailed evidence on this, but I honestly thing the numbers could also stand for seasons. She was in season 5, obviously. The second hand ticking from 7 to 8 is interesting because, even though Beth wasn’t in them, season 7 is when Negan arrived and 8 is a continuation of Negan. We believe Beth will be tied to the Negan story line, so it’s super-suspicious that these numbers specifically, rather than season 6, are what we see on her clock. If that’s the case, the 10 may also point to season 10, but we won’t know if or how that’s the case until S10 rolls around.
Other Clocks: Edwards’. I talked about this in Part 1 of my Clock Analysis. Remember the clock in Edwards’ office changes from 8:40 (resurrection) to 8:50 (8x10) and may show the episode in which the resurrection will happen.
Tumblr media
Clock in 5x09: @wdway found this and I’ve honestly never heard any other TDer talk about it. True, I could have just missed it, but none of the theorists in my group had heard of it either, and generally at least one of us has.
So remember this scene where Rick, Michonne and Glenn talk in Wiltshire? This scene has always been suspicious to us because Glenn holds a bat (Negan foreshadow) and talks about Beth being alive in the present tense.
Tumblr media
This is one of the bats we saw associated with Beth (the other big one is in Inmates, which is an episode 10, btw) and felt like it was a clue.
Tumblr media
So in the open garage behind Rick and Michonne, there’s a wall clock. Guess what time it reads? 8x10.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So perhaps, just like the clock in Edwards’ office, it shows the episode where these clues will be fulfilled? Here’s hoping!
Other random 8x10 evidence:
In 4x16, we have the scene where the Claimers find Rick, Michonne and Carl. This is yet another scene that has way deeper significance now that we know Carl is dying. I’ve thought for a long time that this scene was a foreshadow of Beth at Grady. (See the post I did about it two years ago HERE. Also HERE.)
It’s mostly about subtle parallels. Carl wakes up in a blue suburban (Beth wore blue scrubs and the color is associated with imprisonment; there’s also the blue suburban they drove in 5x09). He wakes up to find danger around him. There’s also broken glass shown. He’s sexually threatened, but not actually assaulted. All parallels to what happens with Beth at Grady. And since it’s Carl who wakes up, in this analogy, Carl = Beth. So you can see that the entanglement is functioning on many levels. So why am I going over this? Because of something Joe says.
Tumblr media
Remember he starts counting backwards from 10, planning to shoot Rick when he gets to 1, but Daryl shows up and says stop. And what does Joe reply? “You’re stopping me on 8, Daryl.” I picked up on this during my rewatch before S8 began, and saw it as yet another emphasis on the number 8 and season 8 being important. But they specifically emphasize the numbers 8 and 10. Obviously it wouldn’t make any sense to count up from 8 to 10 in this case. They kinda had to start at 10. So it’s either pointing to 10x08 or 8x10. Just saying.
I also think it’s important to note that in the next scene, where Rick and Daryl become brothers, Rick talks about keeping Carl safe, and how he’d do anything, even rip out Joe’s throat to make sure Carl stays alive. Major foreshadowing, y’all.
Finally—and this is one of my favorite evidences, again found by M-Nonny—in Coda, FG’s decides to be random and sneaks out of the church to go to the school, where he ends up being chased back by a horde of walkers, and the church is ultimately lost. I remember thinking this scene was so random when watching Coda for the first time. Since then, we’ve found lots of Beth symbolism in it, so it’s made more sense.
Tumblr media
But check this out. One of the things we’ve analyzed to death is the bible FG opens and looks out. We’ve looked at numbers and stories and passages. All kinds of things. And here it is: *drumroll please* The passage he opens to is Chronicles 8:10.
Tumblr media
And whose name just so happens to appear on the page? Beth’s:
Tumblr media
And this happens in Coda, people. CODA!
It also occurred to me that it’s interesting that FG’s church is lost here. Here’s the minor spoiler: Carl will die in Alexandria’s church (which we’ve always felt had Beth vibes) and it will burn down around him. So in both cases, a church is destroyed. Just kind of interesting.
So this is most of my 8x10 evidence. I’m sure there is probably more we would find if we did re-watches looking specifically for this, but this what I’ve got.
Disclaimer: Despite all this, could I be wrong? Sure. I know I’ll have at least some haters hate on me if she doesn’t show in 8x10. All of this evidence points to SOMETHING big in 8x10. I think and hope it’s Beth. There’s a very good chance of that. But it might be something else too.
M-Nonny did remind me of one really compelling piece of evidence that may run contrary to this 8x10 theory. I’ll post in more detail about this next week, but it’s about the “how the harvest gets home” truck sin 5x16. When Aaron and Daryl find the wolf trap, the truck shave that logo on the side, and we’ve long thought “the harvest” is Beth. The license plate Aaron removes from the truck has an 816 on it, which may mean that Beth won’t show until the finale.

And if she doesn’t show by 8x10, I honestly won’t expect to see her until then. But Alexandria is Aaron and Daryl’s home. The wolves go to Alexandria in 6x02 and even drive a “harvest” truck into the wall. So I’m hoping Beth will show up earlier (like in 8x10) and 8x16 will be when she finally arrives at Alexandria. *fingers crossed*
So, all THAT said, I’m totally going to get your hopes up about something else. Thanks to a Nonny for sending this to my inbox. (I’ll officially answer your Ask tomorrow, but I read it a few days ago and totally freaked out about it. ;D)
The following is the final paragraph of THIS ARTICLE, which was written by a blogger who received an advance screener of 8x09. Check out what she says:

So my group totally went to town on this, did tons of research and discussed with hundreds of comments. See, in the comments of this blog post, someone asked if the last scenes that caused tears of joy might be something with Negan or a Richonne baby. The blogger answered yes, but she wouldn’t say which one.
So my group morphed into super-hero researchers. ;D Here’s what we discussed:
My issue with this being a Richonne baby is saying that half the fandom will hate it. I guess those really angry about Carl might see it as switching one child for another, but I think those people would be in the minority. Saying half the fandom might want to punch Gimple seems really over the top if this is just about a Richonne baby.
This blogger isn’t a huge Richonne fan. She doesn’t hate them at all, but she doesn’t ship them in particular, and mostly just doesn’t really care, so she isn’t someone who’d have such a strong reaction to a Richonne baby.
The same is true of Carzekiel. We talked about it being a Carzekiel thing, but while she kinda likes the idea of Carzekiel, she doesn’t especially love or ship them, so again, it probably wouldn’t give her this extreme a reaction.
This blogger really loved both Still and Alone, and enjoyed the romantic moment between Beth and Daryl in Alone. Just saying.
If it’s not Richonne, then it must have something to do with Negan. Since we do think Beth is tied to Negan, we’re okay with that. Kind of hoping we’ll see who the prisoner was from the handcuffs Daryl saw in 8x02 (because we think it was Beth). Let’s just say lots of conjecture and head canons about these mystery scenes have been floating around my group the past week.

So we don’t know what these scenes are, and they might not be Beth, but we have high hopes. If they have to do with her, then this theory is wrong anyway because she’ll have shown up in 8x09, rather than 8x10. I’d be happy to be wrong in that way. ;D
And hey, even if it’s not anything obviously to do with Beth, I think these final, shocking scenes will be very important and tell us a lot. But here’s hoping they’re about our girl.
If you read the entire article, the blogger also says there are several unforeseen twists throughout the episode, and some are tied to Siddiq, who has Oceanside ties in the CBs. So once again, Oceanside comes into things, and that feels Bethish too.
Okay, I’ll shut up for today. Bottom line: I’m very excited for 8b and totally believe our girl is coming home. Thoughts?
