Your taste in music vexes me.

It's very simple.

I grew up being pseudo-raised by a family down the street and we 50% listened to average American radio (so 90s/2000s Big Music) and 50% listened to raggaeton and other radio stations that were only in Spanish, which no one ever translated for me (I was the only one who didn't speak Spanish), so the songs stayed in my heart all my life but... I had no real way to find them. The specific songs are lost to the passage of time but the influence on my taste remains.

Then I'd go home and my mom would play Enya. And then left my dad for a man who would take her to The B 52s concerts. So, that was my home life. Also, my dad would bring home cds people left behind on the greyhound bus he drove, so I got SUPER into Brandy's Full Moon album and Eiffel 65's Europop.

And then I got into anime at a young age, so both Jpop and meme music got into the mix via anime OP/EDs but also AMVs. But I wanted to kill myself, so I listened to emo music (we can argue whether or not this stuff counts as emo but at the time!! it was) , preferring stuff like Hawthorne Heights but also more metal offerings (which is probably the anime influence, lots of AMVs actually skewed towards "harder" stuff than like... FOB and MCR).

That was all of high school, then in college I realized I wanted to fuck several members of One Direction, so I got really into them and then got into a british radio show which introduced me to The Klaxons, Everything Everything, Laura Mvula, and more. But also, Dubstep was really big... and I was a binge drinker in college, so of course I was into that.

Also in college, I got into video games as well, in a way I hadn't been for years, so picked up Utada Hikaru again and then got into instrumental soundtracks. Through Utada, I rediscovered my love for 90s/early 2000s R&B. And decided to explore more current offerings.

This was amplified by the fact that I was ALSO getting into kpop (as a natural offshoot of my Jpop interest) and had frustrations with the "rap" in the songs and wanted... actually good rap and hip hop. So, I swerved a lot into exploring actual hip hop and not the fun house mirror hip hop that the kpop industry was offering.

All of this is curated by my unmedicated ADHD which demands high energy music and they all collided into a musical open mindedness which makes me willing to try anything.

Other notable events/influences:

I lived with a guitarist who would practice all the time and talk about his inspirations and stuff

Tumblr dashboard

Living in Vermont in general

Listening to people just cause they're gay (I have stopped doing this but it did influence me)

Really cannot reiterate enough how much AMVs influenced my taste in music. My entire preference for EDM probably stems from late 2000s AMV culture

Cousin who also semi-raised me got me into Mika, band of horses, and Paolo Nutini

I imagine through work. Tenma isn't going to bars, let's be real (though the image of him hunched over a bar covered in rainbow LEDs, bitterly downing cocktail in a club as the speakers blare 90's europop is a great image lmao)

Hoshie Tenma I always imagined was a scientist too, though maybe in a different field. Unlike ATB I firmly think they are the same age. I've always thought Tenma and her were a decade-ish younger than Ochan. So when Astro boy is established and all the wacky hijinks of the manga are taking place, Tenma and Hoshie are in their late 40s, while Ochanomizu is hitting mid/ late 50s. (I imagine Tobio's accident happened in their late 30s)

I wish we knew more about Hoshie, tbh. I think she probably just caught his eye with her beauty - then held his attention with her steadfast personality. They seemed like a really cute couple, before... everything lol

Looking at the polls from yesterday and today, it looks like the early 90's were a good time for reggae-inspired music by artists from countries not usually associated with reggae. Most notable for today's selection is Sweden's Ace of Base. The group was doing well in their home country, as Europop taking over the airwaves across Europe. The sound wasn't as big in The States, but Ace of Base saw an immense amount of crossover success. As the years go on, Sweden would continue to have a powerful influence over the sound of pop music. Both indirectly, as more American artists start to incorporate the sound of Europop into their music, but directly as well. Cheiron Studios was founded in 1992 by a man going by Denniz Pop. He was one of the producers behind Ace of Base as well as an incredibly-stacked list of artists based both in and outside of his home country (many of whom will definitely make up a large portion of these polls). Sadly, he never got to live past the 90's, but along with Max Martin (another Cheiron Studios producer whose name I'm dropping here as a bit of foreshadowing), his sound and songwriting techniques would come to define this decade in pop music as well as the ones coming after.

Another Wimpy Kid theory

One of my odd hobbies is figuring out Wimpy Kid discoveries/theories. It's something that broadens across all my interests, but Wimpy Kid is the strangest one. I was debating if this was "sharable" enough of a discovery, but after uploading my iceberg, I decided to trickle down stuff not included inside of it, starting with this one, which happens to be my newest theory.

Joshie is a character that I always wondered the origins of. For those unaware, Joshie is a character introduced in the original Wimpy Kid webcomic and the published Rodrick Rules book, he is a cheesy pop singer that is hugely popular with teen girls and Rowley. For a while I debated what Joshie was parodying, the most obvious answer is Justin Bieber. Both are foreign (to America anyways), as Justin came from Canada and Joshie is vaguely European, both were popular with teen girls, and both conveniently start with the letter J. However, the biggest issue with this is that the Wimpy Kid webcomic was being uploaded during May through June of 2005, prior to the rise of Justin Bieber in 2007. The other issue is that Joshie has the appearance of a grown adult, while Justin was very much a child during his rise.

So without Justin, I was a bit stumped on Joshie, as I didn't know enough about 90's pop music to really come to a conclusion. That was until the rise of a somewhat problematic meme.

Joshie isn't a parody of a pop singer like Justin Bieber, but rather the parody of an entire genre of music. Joshie is a 90s Europop singer. Well, at least he was. And I will get to the was part pretty soon.

The most obvious example of Joshie being a Europop singer is rather interesting. On the official Wimpy Kid website used to be an odd mp3 upload of Joshie's hit song "Joshie Says" which was recorded by the author's brother.

While on it's own, Joshie Says appears to be a catchy, yet oddly creepy parody of "kiddie" songs, when compared to some 90s Europop hits, it suddenly makes a lot of sense.

The fact that Joshie is vaguely European also fits the bill with the Europop genre. Most Americans don't know what countries the Europop singers came from, all they knew is they came from Europe.

Joshie's attire also fits the bill, while at first glance it seems generically boy-bandish

It actually fits in with a lot of the Europop clothes styles

So why is his reference so late in the genre's relevancy? Diary of a Wimpy Kid was originally written down in the late 90s onto some notebooks, the idea of Joshie probably originated there and stuck. Even though Europop no longer was relevant, the idea of a teen idol that girls love and most boys get annoyed by was still relevant.

What Joshie references now

I think Joshie has been retconned in recent years. This piece of evidence comes from the musical, which while more movie based than book based was given the official blessing from the author. In all productions, Joshie sings a generic pop song known as "Animal Heart".

I think that this is the clearest sign that Joshie no longer parodies 90s Europop but rather the pop genre as a whole. Which is rather fitting for such a vague and odd character.

Corona's unbelievably gorgeous frontwoman Olga de Souza was absolutely reveling in this moment here as she was afforded the opportunity to perform her group's beloved early 90s Eurodance classic in front of thousands of people, 20-plus years after it had first been released. So good.

Golden! And since their eyes are big, so people do notice them easily (but I guess that's also because asura heads are also usually big)... Also! They glow in the dark. 😏 It starts as soon as dawn/dusk/any slight darkening... (realistically they just reflect light but hhhh glowy eyes pog)

👻 GHOST - do they believe in ghosts? what are their “ghostly experiences”, if any?

They do! I mean yeah since ghosts exist in Tyria They did see some even when they were traveling the world, but the number of ghost sightings greatly increased in Elona (*coughs* The Desolation). They usually don't care/bother though so they don't have any experiences to speak of.

💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?

Hmm maybe grief? Like... they can deal with it but pretty badly as they haven't learned to mourn properly since they never had the "chance".

😨 FEARFUL - when scared, do they go into “flight” or “fight”?

Fight! 💥 They're ready to throw hands at the slightest spook anytime.

🌙 MOON - what is your oc’s greatest wish? how far are they willing to go for it?

Hmmm I guess at the core of them, "be the wisest necromancer of all time" is the one. They almost straight up died for it once (days of starving in the prisons of Gandara just so they could learn necromancy from Joko), so yeah they're willing to go pretty far. 😈

🕷️ SPIDER - what is their biggest fear? do they have any irrational / mundane fears?

They're terrified of any kind/amount of memory loss. While some people may fear being forgotten, Gliaster fears forgetting.

Mundane fears, mostly...sand sharks! More specifically, getting jumpscared and eaten by a sand shark.

🌹 ROSE - do they like valentines day? have they been confessed to before? have they confessed to anyone before?

They don't really care for it; they love their beloved every 365 day of the year!  Plus, they prefer surprises; affection and gifts are best when they're unexpected and not "ohh I bought you this because it's x day."

And yes to both! Gliaster is (Rick Astley voice) no stranger to love and has been on both end of confessions.

🌌 MILKY WAY - what was the inspiration behind your oc? what was the first thing you decided about them?

My inspiration was my love for Joko and Elona, which kickstarted breaking Gliaster out of the shackles of being the Commander and turned them into my 100% "original" character! But I remember the very first thing I decided about them was their gender.❤️ I looked at asura and went wow I want what they have. I instantly knew Gliaster would have none of any gender.

📣 MEGAPHONE - how loud are they? what do they speak like? got a voice claim?

Even though it sounds nice and appealing, their voice is quite high-pitched, which is something they're insecure about (and the older they get the more insecure they get as well). I do not have a spoken voice claim, only sung one, but it is Aneela Mirza! Some might know her from the 90's europop duo Toy-Box, lol.

🪤 MOUSE TRAP - what will always lure them into certain danger? a loved one in danger? a promise of something they are always searching for?

Oh yes, a loved one in danger for sure... But also some source of knowledge that is thought to be very valuable. They try to think rationally and be careful if a suspicion of a bait ever happens (knowing well they're not-so-liked in some areas) but god do their emotions and curiosity get the better of them sometimes...

👑 CROWN - what does your oc want to be remembered as? why?

Definitely the books they write post-Joko, which is something no one really has done before (especially not from Gliaster's POV, who knew Joko intimately for 10 years)

They also want to be remembered for their necromancer skills, because it's something they've honed all their life.

N/A for the first part of the question, but yee I have few songs like that!

"Whenever Wherever" by Shakira is their theme song (like the lyrics "Lucky that I love a foreign land for / the lucky fact of your existence" is sooooo perfect)

"Dancing with the Dead" by Powerwolf is pog as well (The whole thing just inspires me to really turn them into the next expansion villain lmao)

And any song that comes from their voiceclaim! (especially non-english songs)

Not particularly want, but if it happened, they wouldn't mind... 😏 (They're not really a fan of cheesy stuff like that anyway)

Nope! They turn their back hardly, and if they do so, their back will be covered. They're prepared for everything because they believe that anything they have done (for example, treason and murder :^)) could also be done to them. And yes as mentioned, they would betray someone (and did before) but only by their own decision and not an outside control.
