Empty Graves by @unpretty and Empty Spaces (waves and particles) by kathkin

I participated in @renegadepublishing’s tiny book bang last year, and as participant I got access to all the typesets from the event. I saved the ones I thought I’d want to do, and yesterday I looked through that folder, spotted two fics with the word ‘empty’ in the title and thought “oh neat, i know and like these fics, and I can make matching-but-not-same binds for them”. I was delighted to re-discover that they were typeset by the same person, @little-cat-press, so I went ahead with the matchy idea.

Empty Graves is a Superman fic from the POV of Martha Kent, and just so happens to be one of my faves in unpretty’s sprawling series. I chose the marbled cover paper because it evokes stars and galaxies and space for me. The fic is very contained, localised - the Kent farm - but high stakes; Martha will protect her son from the universe if she has to (and she does), because her family is her universe. I liked the idea of wrapping this small-but-big fic in something that resembles the vastness of space. The spine is green to match the hints of green colour on the otherwise dark marble.

Empty Spaces is a Back to the Future fic from Doc Brown’s POV, and featuring transmasc Marty McFly. The Back to the Future movies are foundational to me, and this fic is simply wonderful, highlighting the unique friendship between Marty and Doc. For this I knew I wanted something that evokes time travel, and wound up with this section of a larger marbled pattern that resembles the sci-fi woosh of time (and space) travel. This spine is blue to match the hint of blue visible alongside the green.

Both marbled papers are from Jemma Lewis Marbling & Design. The insides are printed on 90gsm Munken Pure Smooth Cream. These are self-ended, so no endpapers. The bookcloth is sourced from Ratchford but I don’t know which brand it is.

These are A8 sized (printed on A4) - I believe the typesets are intended for letter sized paper, but as I’m not in the US A-series it is. This prints fine on A4. The margins to the sides are slightly wider than originally intended, but that doesn’t seem to be an issue here.

The stately Raggfong

My response to this week's BestiaryPosting challenge, from @maniculum

Once more, I ask you to consider, are birds jerks? The authors of medieval bestiaries seem to think, yes, they are!*

Initial pencil sketch for the proportions, then Sailor fude nib fountain pen for the inking, with Rohrer & Klingner Sepia ink, on A5 paper (90gsm).

I'd already determined that for the next bird that came up, I wanted to try putting more detail on the feathers; unfortunately I fear this may have gotten in the way a little, as it makes it more difficult to see the chicks the Raggfong is holding in each of it's claws. Hopefully what I was trying to achieve comes across enough! :D

*except for coots; coots, apparently, are awesome.

Reasoning below the cut, as per usual...

"The Raggfong is so called because of the sharpness of its eyes, for it is said to be of such keen vision that it glides above the sea on unmoving wings, out of human sight, yet from such a height sees small fish swimming below and, swooping down like a missile thrown from a siege engine, it seizes its prey on the wing and carries it to land."

- That's quite some description already! My first thought was of some kind of dragon, soaring high above the seas, except that a) we've already had a dragon, and b) the description later states that we're talking about a bird. I tried to make its eye nice and big, to represent it's sharp vision, and we have the suggestion of waves down below (and a very worried looking medieval fishie...!).

"When the Raggfong grows old, however, its wings grow heavy, and its eyes grow dim. Then it seeks out a spring and, turning away from it, flies up into the atmosphere of the sun; there it sets its wings alight and, likewise, burns off the dimness in its eyes in the sun’s rays. Descending at length, it immerses itself in the spring three times; immediately it is restored to the full strength of its wings, the former brightness of its eyes." - This is all cool, but I couldn't work out how best to represent this without detracting from what else I wanted to do with it.

"It is also said of the Raggfong that it exposes its young to the sun’s rays, holding them in its claws in mid-air. If any of them, struck by the light beating down from the sun, maintains a fearless gaze without damaging its sight, this is taken as proof that it has shown itself true to its nature. But if the young bird turns its eyes away from the rays, it is rejected as unworthy of its kind and of such a father and, being unworthy of being begotten, it is considered unworthy of being reared."

- The Raggfong definitely seems to be an ocean bird; it doesn't read like a hawk, which confused me a bit at first, since how is it grabbing things (including its chicks) with webbed feet? However, after a little research I found that some waterbirds (including coots!) have lobate feet; lobes of skin on either side of the toes that expand when it swims, but probably wouldn't get in the way when it held things. I wasn't able to include enough detail to show this, but cool fact nontheless.

The legs were based on an osprey (just in terms of managing to hold something within its claws), and the general body shape and wings on a cormorant (mostly because I could find reasonably good references!)

We can see the Raggfong holding up two of its chicks, one in each claw; the one on the left of the picture stares defiantly at the sun (I'm not convinced this will help its keen vision...), but the one on the right of the picture is more sensible and is looking away... :(

- Birds. Are. Jerks. :p

"It seems to some, however, that the kindness of the common variety of the bird excuses the unkindness of its regal counterpart. The ordinary bird is called [redacted], coot; in Greek, [redacted]. Taking up the young Raggfong, abandoned or unacknowledged, the coot adds it to its brood, making it one of the family, with the same maternal devotion as it shows to its own young, and feeds and nourishes the young Raggfong and its own brood with equal attention."

- The description of the Raggfong as 'regal' informed how I approached the head. I wanted to make it at least a little fancy, and considered a variety of options (including long, flowy eyebrows - and even a lyrebird/bird of paradise inspired tail before realising that would decidedly get in the way of catching fish) before I settled on a grebe-inspired crest, loosely resembling a crown.

Now coots, I know what they look like! In the bottom right we see a parent coot with three of its babies, as well as a young Raggfong it adopted. Its nice to know that some of these bestiary entries have a happy ending!

As an aside, I haven't managed to capture exactly how scrungly baby coots look; they are absolutely delightful! :D

Hello friend! I don't mind the screaming at all, it shows your enthusiasm which I absolutely love!

Did I print it myself?:

Yes I did! I took the text from AO3 and then typeset it into a more suitable book format in Word. It's printed on 90gsm archival short grain paper so it feels like the paper you'd find in a limited edition/deluxe version of a book. Very nice and smooth!

Have I done something like this before/How long did it take?:

I've made a few books before but all of them have either been practice books or gifts for others. This is the first one I've made for myself! This particular book took several evenings to typeset, but once that was done, printing, sewing, gluing making the cover, applying the cover design etc took about a day and a half? Which isn't too bad but I was doing it in 43°C/110°F weather so it was a little taxing...

Did I draw or write anything for myself:

No, not this time! This was all just a collection of my favourite fics that others have written. Though keep an eye on some of the future projects I have planned! 😉

How did I organise the fics?:

There are 11 fics in total in this book, ranging anywhere from just over 1k words to about 30k. I put 7 shorter one shot fics at the front of the book, and then the 4 longer, multi-chapter fics towards the back, but other than that there wasn't much rhyme or reason to the order.

I'm really glad you like it! I've got some more projects that I will reveal soon, so keep an eye out for those too! 💙

Furiously trying to scour the interwebs for options and calculating the cheapest possible choices to make more notebooks without lowering the quality of final product. Made some progress but man, if i want to use anything better than ok-quality printer paper, it's the biggest problem. They're so much nicer with better paper but ugh...

The cheapest 200gsm watercolour paper I found still racks it up to 11€/book for the pages alone for a 90-page booklet ~_~ With okay-quality 90gsm printer paper it's only around 2€/book for the pages if I order the paper in 5x500pcs pack, which is okay for writing but not ideal for drawing really. I could propably find some munken type sketching paper that would be somewhere between those two price-wise, but it's still not very cheap q_q (and I still have to consider the shipping fees of the materials to me as well.. haven't been counting those in at all >.>; ) Then add the cover mats(2mm cardstok + fabric pieces) and the rest(waxed thread, bookbinding glue etc.) + packing materials to that and it's closer to 9-18€/book for materials alone.. And then decide what your time and skill is worth for the 3-4hrs it takes to make one from scratch.

Haha..ha my handywork's still not gonna be worth much at /hr all if i wanna be able to sell any.

And it's such a shame that people can't get to hold and feel the books before buying via internet, because that's where most of the magic of handmade notebooks is (´；ω；`)

I am back on the no-glue pamphlet train! I splurged on some coloured linen thread yesterday purely because I thought it’d be nice to use for this kind of book. The thread is quite a bit thicker than what I usually use so I definitely won’t use it for regular books - but here I think it makes a lovely contrast.

A6, printed on long grain 90gsm Munken Smooth Cream, and the cover is printed on 160gsm Canaletto cream.

Take Shelter is mission impossible fic by @foxesonstilts - there’s a bit in there about a whale penis bone but do you know how hard it is to find any kind of picture of a penis bone?? and once you start looking at whale skeletons and you realise none of them have penis bones one might be tempted to write letters to museums asking them to please include the penis bones in the exhibits (and scientific illustrations)…

Self-growth ⭐🌟✨ I'm growing. Finally. I can exist with all these pieces and parts that I have collected and stitched and mended together. I am not here to look pretty for you. If you don't like what I have made of myself, you can close your eyes and move on. I will not pull myself apart for you, nor will I twist and fold myself into some familiar shape for you, one that may be easier to digest. Vivi DIYs a Motorsports Journal

One of my college classes is about bookbinding/book arts and I've decided to go ambitious with one of my projects and make a motorsports journal. (Except now I've already spent about 4 hours on the pages and setting everything up instead of working on my more pressing assignments)

I think it might be fun to track the process here, so I'll put everything else under the cut and reblog with additional updates!

Format/Content:

I'm including general series schedules, a page for (almost) every race, driver (and in some cases team) pages, and then some empty space in the back. I hadn't gotten around to listing out all the races for all the categories I'm following, but wow it was wild to actually lay it all out... I'm including F1, F2, F1 Academy, Indycar, WEC, and ELMS, which totals out to 76 races/weekends (F2 and F1A are 1 page per weekend despite having 2 races, but the Indycar double headers are considered 2 races).

WEC race pages will focus on Jota and the Iron Dames, and ELMS pages will focus on Inter Europol Competition and Iron Dames (as opposed to listing all entries in all categories)

For Indy NXT I'm really only following Jamie Chadwick, so I'm including a little space for notes on the Indycar pages when NXT is running. Similarly, for Formula E I'm just going to have Nissan in the driver page section and more passively track their progress there.

Making the book:

Once I finish formatting all the pages and test-printing a few to make sure everything is good to go, I plan to print on 24lb Bond/60lb (90gsm) paper (a little thicker than normal printer paper). Right now it's looking like it'll be 112 pages, which means 7 4-sheet signatures.

Binding:

This very well may end up being a total disaster, but I really want to try to do a Coptic stitch binding but with a design--that design being a racecar. It's definitely going to take some experimenting, practice, and planning beforehand, but I really want to see if I can make it work. I think the hardest part is going to be transferring a design onto the spine. I'm defs going to try SeaLemon's technique of drawing out the design and then doing a graphite transfer.

My other concerns are that a) I will have to make too many holes in certain signatures which will make them prone to tearing out (especially if I will be opening and closing the journal a lot) and b) there won't be good spots to anchor the cover boards. I think I can have a straight line across the top and bottom of the spine to help anchor things, and then see where I can creatively work additional spots into the cover boards.

If worst comes to worst, I can always just case bind the thing I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyway, I'm about halfway through setting up the race pages, then I have to figure out how I want to format the driver pages. But I might have to force myself to put that off until spring break starts in two weeks, because my assignments due before break are looking in dire shape...

If anyone has any comments/suggestions for a novice bookmaker I'm all ears!
