What is the couch theory? 😅

oh anon, where do i start!!!!! this is possibly my favourite subject of all time so apologies in advance if this gets rambly askdjfh

okay so the couch theory goes all the way back to s5 of 911. at the start of 5B buck asks taylor to move in with him, right? and because she brings all her stuff with her it means they have double of everything, including two couches. so buck gets rid of his and they keep taylor's

however in 5x18 buck and taylor break up so she moves out and, of course, takes her couch with her

when we meet buck again in s6 a few months later he still hasn't found a replacement couch. over family dinner with eddie and christopher, chris makes a joke about it (like father, like son) and buck tells him and eddie that, "he doesn't want to choose the wrong couch again" heavily implying he means he doesn't want to choose the wrong romantic partner again (he also says his last two couches came with girlfriends since ali presumably helped him pick out the first one when he moved into the loft in s2).

the episode ends with buck moving his armchair to the place his couch used to sit and sitting down with a smile on his face, suggesting he's content on his own for now and thus, the couch theory was born:

buck's next couch/romantic partner will be the Right one

so we go through the whole of 6A with no couch developments and no real allusions to it be tHEN in 6B after the lightning strike buck's parents comment on his lack of couch and his mother decides she's going to buy him a couch (which is the adult equivalent of getting him a new bike when he hurts himself but that's a different post)

so margaret buys buck a couch but obviously, it's all wrong. because buck didn't choose it himself. it's not comfortable, he can't relax on it, can't fall asleep on it. and in an episode where buck is feeling smothered by everyone's attempts to check in on him it doesn't offer the comfort he needs so what does he do???

go to eddie's house of course!

and you'll never guess what happens, anon:

buck falls asleep on eddie's couch in about five seconds flat!!!!

to say 911 had me by the throat at that point would be an understatement lmao

bc that means eddie's the couch, right?????? what other implications could there possibly be when buck has been using his couch as a metaphor for a partner and he falls asleep on eddie's couch so quickly, suggesting he feels safe and comfortable there??? i said it that time but it would literally have been less suggestive to have him sleep in eddie's bed than it would've been to have him sleep on the couch at the point skdjhf

(and none of this is even getting into the fact that when buck wakes up eddie is the first person buck is honest with in the episode about how he's feeling after the accident, further cementing the idea of him being buck's safe space)

anyway by the end of s6 kameron gives birth on buck's couch and effectively ruins it meaning it's time for him to get a new couch again. now this is where everything falls to shit and i WILL be bitter about this for the rest of my life lmao but basically because of the fear of cancellation s6 sort of pivots in the last few eps and the finale makes an attempt to give each of the characters a mini happy ending in case it really is the overall series finale. and buck's 'happy ending' was to ask natalia (who he'd recently started dating) to help him pick out a new couch

now my personal opinion?? i Hated that. not even from a buddie perspective, just as someone who is very dedicated to buck's seasons long romantic arc and the couch theory, i thought it was really weak and far less satisfying than if he'd just ended the season single. especially bc the point was buck was supposed to pick the couch himself. but!!! some people are suggesting he still doesn't have a couch in s7 (though it's hard to tell since all the shots we've gotten have been in the kitchen) so i am privately holding onto the hope that the couch theory lives on aksjdfh

TL;DR the couch is eddie. eddie is the couch 🛋️❤️

Hi! I’ve been following you for a while and so have seen a lot of your 911 content and it’s made me pretty interested in watching the show. (I thought Buck/Eddie was canon for the longest time because of your blog and was genuinely disappointed when i realised they weren’t😭)

I’m very aware though that it may be another queerbaiting situation and I don’t know if I have the energy to invest in that D: Do you think there’s any hope for Buck/Eddie? Should I watch the show despite that?

I'm going to be very firm in my answer here: it is not queerbaiting.

Regardless of whether or not the show goes canon, it is not queerbaiting.

When the Rizzoli & Isles marketing team from day one (literally before the pilot even aired) were putting out billboards and advertisements in magazines going "ooh are they just friends or are they partners in more ways than one?" - that was queerbaiting. They did this throughout the entire run of the show.

When the Teen Wolf team had the actors for the popular ship Sterek cuddling on a boat making shipping jokes and telling us to tune in to the new season of Teen Wolf and winking at us - that was queerbaiting.

When the BBC Sherlock writers threw in line after line of third parties stating that John was married to Sherlock, that Sherlock was John's boyfriend, that John was clearly in love with Sherlock, only for them to turn around and literally make fun of viewers for thinking that they were being serious - that was queerbaiting.

When the Supernatural writers made wink wink references to Dean Winchester knowing about/visiting popular gay bars in Miami and suggesting he and Cas run away to the one state that had gay marriage legalized at the time - that was queerbaiting.

The 911 writers haven't done one of those wink wink references since season two. They have not used the Buddie ship in marketing tools and advertisements. They have not had third parties joke that Buck and Eddie are gay for each other.

The fact that the writers are crafting a story where we, the viewers, see the only logical conclusion to the character arcs being Buck and Eddie falling for each other and dating is not queerbaiting. Queerbaiting is a tactic to lure in a queer audience without any intention of following through.

This 'queerbaiting' accusation is especially heinous in regards to 911 because 911 is a show that has five significant queer characters: Hen Wilson and her wife Karen, Athena's ex-husband Michael, Michael's fiancé David, and Maddie's coworker Josh. Michael and David are currently not on the show due to Michael's actor refusing to follow vaccination guidelines, but Hen and Karen just got a huge damn backstory episode showing how they fell in love.

911 loves and respects its queer characters and storylines, so to have the fandom constantly accusing them of queerbaiting because the ship they want to happen hasn't happened (yet), is insulting and disrespectful, in my very, very, very tired opinion.

So, to wit: whether or not they go canon, Buck and Eddie are not queerbaiting. 911 is not queerbaiting us. Full stop.

Now, we do not know for certain that they will be going canon. The show writers are not going to confirm that ahead of time, just like they wouldn't for a het ship like Bones/Booth, Castle/Beckett, or most recently Chenford over on The Rookie. That would be spoiling a big plot moment if that's where they're headed. So asking for confirmation from them is rather unfair. As I've said before and will say again: no, het ships do not get a guarantee and a pre-canon confirmation. If you think they do, then I would've loved to see where you were in the late 90s/early 00s when I was in the trenches.

However, with het ships, writers will play with the audience and tease them a bit more. Because with het ships, if they do that, they won't be queerbaiting if it doesn't happen. Therefore, the 911 writers are going to stay mum. We won't know from the writers if Buddie is going canon until it's shown on screen through a third party love confession or other means.

Although we do not have a confirmation that they're going canon, I have faith that they are. The writing points to it. I don't have time to list all the reasons. If you go into my blog and search '911 spec' or 'meta' you should get some good results. Otherwise if you go to @extasiswings blog and do some searching you'll see a lot of great meta from herself and others. @yramesoruniverse also has great meta. There are others but I'm fried and rushing out the door so can't think of anything specific at the moment.

My point is, people in this fandom have outlined how the writing in this show, to them, points to Buddie going canon, and I agree. Do some light digging and you'll see.

Finally, a ship going canon or not is not why you should ship something. Ship something because you love the dynamic. Geraskier is never going canon but I'm still having a rip-roaring good time with them. But at the end of the day, nonny, it's up to you.

If you want to wait and watch from the sidelines to see if Buddie goes canon before investing, that's totally valid and your choice. I can't decide that for you. I know what it's like to ship something and hope it goes canon only to have it not come to fruition (RIP Garcy, among others), and it sucks, so I get it if you don't want to do that. But it's your choice and yours alone.

I will say that 911 is a fantastic show even without Buddie going canon, and that I adore every single one of the characters, and I don't even like medical dramas. So I think it's a worthwhile show to get into, Buddie or no Buddie.

To summarize: We don't know if they're going canon yet but it's not queerbaiting, the show is good either way and worth a shot, only you can decide if you want to invest in a ship that may or may not go canon.

there are many writer's rooms i'd want to be a part of (breaking bad, better call saul, succession, the bear, the west wing, htgawm, the early seasons of er, etc) but for 911 i think i'd just wanna be a fly on the wall watching bc the things that must've gone on are probably fucking wild as hell from s1 to now

My top five be a fly on the wall at the 911 writers’ room moments:

1. Buck wailing with anguish after the well collapse in Eddie Begins—I need to dissect this scene word by word and frame by frame. More than that, I need to know every thought in Peter’s head and the writers’ room discussions for Bobby looking at Buck with so much understanding and realization as Buck is essentially acting like the significant other of the guy whose fate seems sealed.

2. Basically every single Eddie and Bobby scene but especially “you better take some credit for me” from S5…*sobs*

3. Chimney Begins. If I could only watch one episode of this show for the rest of my life I would watch Chimney Begins and I need to know everything about it. What was cut out? How did they get the framing in the split scenes between the past and the present so perfectly? Why did they choose to rip my heart out of my chest with Kevin and Chim and the Lees?

4. Buck and Eddie’s lock eyes for a long time after Christopher is found at the end of the tsunami arc. You know the one. I’m also going to group in Brawl in cell block 9-1-1 here because what even was that episode? I’ve been thinking about it all day and I need to crawl back into this story. We’ve not talked about it in a while and as soon as I rewatch it this week, I mean to make it everyone’s problem.

5. I know the chin grab was improvised but what instructions did the writers have for that look on Tommy’s face as Buck is saying “My sister says there are better ways to get someone’s attention—” You know that look? I’ve probably thought about it at least 80% of my waking hours the past two weeks.

Bonus: Hen and the ambulance accident that killed Evelyn as her rendition of Cello Suite No. 1 plays. I’ve always loved Aisha’s acting in it and it’s always been a scene that devastated me so yes, I would love to know how they came up with it and also the music choice. I could happily sit in the room just as they debate the choice of music for a lot of scenes across episodes and seasons because some of them are mindblowing.

- hello everyone who followed me because of my post at from the start of s3. you are all very lovely and the number of times that post has been tagged with “you’ve got a big storm coming” strikes fear into my heart

- i like that you call it the weewoo show, that’s adorable

- with most shows only a week or two passes in-universe between episodes at most, but 911 will timeskip from one trauma to another one months later so you don’t have to waste time on any of that “healing” and “having a normal time” nonsense. excellent choice, no notes.

- shoutout to the little kid playing christopher because he’s genuinely great

- sad dad bobby has captivated me. i am very biased because six feet under was deeply formative for me, but i love how he looks like the dullest man alive but is actually deeply weird. stress baking. hall monitor vibes while lying to conceal his secret past. guilt-ridden and making dark jokes to his priest. SO damaged. no. 1 wife guy to athena. former child figure skating champion. i love him.

caught up on 911 and wow yeah this recent season rly is a return to form. it just felt like. way more fun than the last two seasons which had their moments (I rly liked the ep where hen and chim were dumpster diving, and honestly they're like the heart and soul of the show to me) but like watching that first episode I was like WOOF. finally nobody's just therapy talking at each other for five minutes straight

the walking dead - ................. like it has to be said. i'm so sorry. it didn't even really go 'bad' for me like it did lose me for a hot minute or two there originally but like. when i rewatched i was like no actually i love it here. i love this hot mess. and i tragically fucking do. could really do with bringing certain characters back etc or just dissappearing some storylines but like. i do fucking love it.

breaking bad - i didnt even KNOW what i was in for i was just like this'll be fine this'll be chill. and then my life changed forever y'know.

black sails - literally don't even need to explain this one. bs is already tumblr critically acclaimed. if i could go back in time and watch the season two last two episodes for the first time all over again, i would in a heartbeat. the girl that existed in my bedroom when watching those eps? never seen her before and i'll never be her again.

911 - listen. it TRULY is tv show of all time. u KNOW this i know you know this. u can't put eddie diaz in a tv show and not have it change the lives of millions.

lets revisit black sails again and say season two finale as a whole? but also the 'in the light there is discovery' forest speech in the series finale............................i get chills like every time. WAIT ALSO 'my name is John Silver. and i've got a Long Fucking Memory.' INSANE acting also idk if this is really technically 'top five scenes' worthy but uknow that line where flints like 'where else would you wake up in the morning and matter?' @ silver??? yeah it ingrained itself into my brain and now whenever my brains having a bad day and being a bitch, it just repeats that line over and over to myself. again i dont know if that makes it a top five thing but boy oh bOY it sure made an impact !

iasip mac finds his pride when mac does the dance and franks crying and is like 'i get it. i get it now.' maybe its cos i feel like there is just a 00.01% chance of my parents ever accepting me and im projecting or whatever but that scene? every fucking time im like........ crying lol

Look, I love 9-1-1 so very very much but coming at it objectively (and as someone who works in TV, and has done for several years), I would not be surprised if this was the final season. I would be gutted if it was canceled but not surprised. Shows which I never thought would be cancelled have been left to dry up, over a decade of production has ended. I worked for two and a half years for a flagship show on a major global network (not giving specifics cause I ain't gonna dox myself when I've seen the behaviour of some people on this tag) and they are really struggling at the moment.

911 simply does not have the viewership it once did, the actors are all getting more and more famous (thus more and more expensive) and the hugely negative reactions online are super damaging. It's one thing to have people complaining about the show while still watching but the drop in viewership combined with bad press, and review bombing (literally what the fuck guys... If you didn't like it, you don't need to ruin it for everyone else? How vindictive and nasty can you be?) can be seriously damaging.

Channels are leaving things to the last minute to renew shows because they are running out of money and this uncertainty can be seen in the writing - season five ended in a way which would be a reasonable final ever scene - and there is only so much that you can do when every season ends with the same vibes of "this could be goodbye forever".

Also, the show is just changing - which is natural over time. Whether you are a buddie fan or not, the Buck & Eddie relationship was a huge part of the show and the writers have basically nuked their screen time for whatever reason which is causing a lot of issues with fans. The human stories are just starting to struggle as storylines aren't being explored and the repeated refusal of the writers to ever have on screen make-ups after issues leads to a lack of trust. If two characters have problems that are a huge plot point, you cannot simply have all make up and big moments off screen (see chimney punch, madney breakup, buck parents make up etc). Characters are making increasingly OOC decisions for reasons which are never explained which leads to the conslusion that either the writers are trying to desperately avoid certain situations with specific characters, or they simply do not understand their characters and aren't willing to try and explain things that don't make sense.

They're running out of storylines too as we see with them getting frankly more and more ridiculous. Now I for one don't mind this, it's a fictional show and I've read fanfic much more bonkers than canon, but for a casual viewer, there's a limit to how much people are willing to let go. (I will take literally anything because I am long past the point about caring about reality in fiction. I like liking things and you're not gonna stop me).

This isn't meant to be a negative post (although it's come out more depressing than I thought) but realistically, I'm not holding out hopes because TV is a numbers game and bad ratings and bad reviews lead to cancelled shows. If you don't like an episode, don't rate it. Would you genuinely prefer the show cancelled because your fave didn't have a big role in an episode? It's literally an ensemble cast so everyone gets their own big storylines.

Anyway, here's hoping I'm wrong and I can joke about this miserable post in the future. I'm off to read 911 fanfic 🤣

Season One Episode One: Pilot 

Summary: Y/N vs a dresser

Part 1 Part 2 

You were on your way to find the old Welch house when your phone started ringing. It was Dean. You put it on speaker and let Dean’s voice fill the room. “Fake 911 call, guys? That’s pretty illegal.” 

“It was all Y/N idea, you’ve been teaching her well,” Sam said, smiling at you from the driver’s seat.

“You’re welcome!” You said into the phone, happy Dean was free. Sam started ranting

about how he figured out the husband was unfaithful, no thanks to you, and how we were on our way to burn the body.

  “Sammy, will you shut up for a second?” Dean yelled, you looked at Sam and he shrugged, “he’s gone. Dad left Jericho.” 

“What? How do you know?” You asked, your brows furrowed in confusion. 

“I got his journal,” Dean said. 

“What did it say?” Sam asked. 

“The same old ex-marine crap when he wants to let us know where he’s going,” Dean said. John was notorious for leaving codes and clues like that that only we can figure out. “He left coordinates.”

“Coordinates to where?” You asked, looking up at Sam, who was just as confused as you. 

“I don’t know yet.”

“Dean, what the hell is going on?” Sam asked, panic in his voice as this case got messier and messier. You screamed as you looked out on the road, seeing a woman standing right in front of the Impala. Sam slammed on the breaks, dropped the phone, and turned the wheel to get out of the way but you hit her, her body disappearing. You could hear Dean calling your names through the phone and Sam stopped the car, the two of you breathing heavy. “Are you okay?” He asked, putting his hand to you immediately, searching for any injuries.

“Yeah, yeah. Are you?” You asked him, looking up at his worried face. He nodded at you and sighed, taking a deep breath. You looked in the rearview mirror and pointed at it, seeing the same girl that you just hit. It had to be Consance. 

“You’ve been unfaithful,” the ghost whispered and you looked at Sam shaking his head. 

“No I haven’t,” he said as all the doors locked in the car and you frantically tried to pull up the lock on your side of the door as the Impala lurched forward. 

“What are you doing?” You asked Sam. 

“I’m not doing that,” he said, looking at you as you stared at the gas pedal to the ground but Sam’s foot wasn't on it. The ghost drove the car to a run-down house, the same house that you and Sam were on your way to.

“I can never go home,” she said, her whole body glitching out in true ghost fashion and you looked at Sam. 

“You can never go home,” he repeated as he looked in the backseat but she was gone. No faster than she disappeared, she appeared right in between the two of you. Your breathing caught in your throat as you sat still, the ghost staring at you. 

“Does he know that you think about him? Does he know that you think about what it would be like if you were with him, instead?” The ghost said, turning her head at you. She cocked her head to the side, a grin plastered on her decaying face. You glanced at Sam out of the corner of your eye as he stared at you in awe. 

“We’re not unfaithful,” you whispered to her. She laughed and looked at Sam, his eyes leaving you. 

“He will be,” she said, straddling him. You searched for anything in the car that you could hit her with, anything that will make her disappear for even just a second. Just enough for Sam to save himself but there was nothing. She started to kiss Sam, forcing herself onto him and you reached for the car keys, turning them so the car would start. 

“Y/N DUCK!” You heard a voice from outside say, so you did. You fit your whole body in between the car seat and the dash, covering your head with your hands as you heard a gunshot, and then another one and another one. Constance disappeared for a second each time, but still it wasn’t enough because you heard Sam’s screams as blood started coming out of his chest in five different holes. She was digging in his chest. 

“Drive, Sam!” You said and he put his foot down on the gas, slamming the Impala into the house. You could hear Dean calling for you two and the car crashed through the walls and the ghost disappeared. “Are you okay?” You asked, getting back up in the seat and gently pulling at his shirt to look at the wounds when Dean ran into the house, his head popping up on your side of the car. 

“You guys okay?” Dean held his hand out for you to grab. You took it and he pulled you through the window and turned his attention to Sam. “Can you move?” Dean asked him. Sam grinned before replying, having a hard time getting up. 

“Yeah, help me,” he said. Dean went to his side of the car and helped him out. He leaned his brother against the side of the Impala and you couldn’t stop yourself from hugging him. You only pulled away because Dean gasped. You both looked out into the house, seeing Constance standing there, looking at a photo.

Before you could move, a dresser flew across the house, smashing the three of you into the Impala, you groaned in pain but not as much as Sam. You tried to move the dresser back as hard as you could but she was pinning it there and she was stronger than you. The lights started flickering in the house and you looked up at them, Dean nudging you with his elbow and nodding towards the stairs. 

You watched as water trickled down the steps and onto the floor, Constance stood at the bottom of the stairs when two little kids appeared nex to her. “You’ve come home to us, mommy,” they whispered before attaching themselves to her and her screams filled the house. The three of them burned in a pit of fire and then--gone, right into the floor. You tried to catch your breath as the two boys pushed the dresser off of you. With Constance gone, the force was no longer untouchable. The two boys walked to the spot where the ghosts disappeared but you stayed back, hearing them mumble. 

“You found her weak spot, nice work Sammy,” Dean slapped Sam’s shoulder and he yelled out in pain. 

“Dean,” you tapped his arm when he reached you but he didn’t notice. He investigated your body for injuries, your usual routine after hunts. 

“You know, I wish I could say the same for you. What were you thinking shooting Casper in the face, you freak?” Sam joked, grabbing onto his chest where the ghost tried to rip his heart out. 

“Hey, saved your ass!” Dean said, gloating at his accomplishments. 

“Um, you’re not the only one who saved his ass,” you pointed out, Dean nodded at you. 

“You’re right, isn’t she getting good, Sammy?” Dean asked his brother as he wrapped his arm around you, smiling proudly. “But I’ll tell you one thing, if you screwed up my car. I’ll kill you,” Dean said, turning to investigate his car. His second part of the routine. You heard Sam chuckle at his brother and you looked at him, reveling in his dimples. 

Back in the Impala, you were back to sitting in the backseat as Sam looked for the coordinates that John left in his journal, “Black Bottle Ridge, Colorado.” Sam finally said, pointing at the map he had in his lap. You looked over his shoulder, holding the flashlight as still as possible so he could see. 

“How far?” You whispered in his ear. 

“About 600 miles,” he said, looking over at Dean. 

“If we shag ass, we can make it by morning,” Dean said, nodding at you. Sam looked at his brother and you knew what he was going to say. “You’re not going?” Dean said. 

“The interview is in like 10 hours, I got to be there,” Sam said, his voice was laced with guilt and you could see that. Dean just looked back at the road and nodded, you handed Sam the flashlight and scooted over to Dean’s side of the car, putting your hand on his shoulder. He glanced up at you briefly and then back at the road. 

“I’ll take you home,” he said. 

A few hours later, you arrive back at Sam’s apartment building, you threw Sam’s bag over the front seat and he grabbed the handle, getting out of the car. “Maybe I’ll meet up with you later, huh?” Sam asked Dean. Dean just nodded and mumbled an okay. You stuck your hand over the front seat and out the window, Sam grabbing it for a moment. “I’ll call you, okay?” You nodded and Sam turned to walk away, Dean cranking the engine again. 

“Sam!” Dean yelled before it was too late, “we made a hell of a team back there, you, me, and the girl,” he said with a smile on his lips. 

“Yeah,” Sam agreed, glancing at you and then at Dean. Dean eventually nodded and then looked back out on the road as you hopped in the front, where you belonged, before Dean drove off and you waved goodbye to Sam from out the window, him smiling softly at you. 

The two of you didn’t actually leave, you just parked around the corner for a moment to catch your breath when you heard Sam scream from inside the building. You jumped up to open the door but Dean put his hand on your arm, “no, you stay here. I’ll be right back.” Dean hopped out of the car and you watched as he ran into the building just as the window from Sam’s room exploded in a fire.

Season Two is my favourite season, mainly because Zoom is the perfect villain! I'd say Season 7 was the weakest, but I understand the troubles they faced while constructing that Season. I forgave them with the five part opener of Season 8 which was great!

I know some of the fandom will disagree but I have the softest spot for Season 5. The addition of Nora was amazing and so tragic too, with the ending. I adore westallen, but like most shows, my favourite thing will always be the family aspect of it all.

"Enter Flashtime" is my all-time favorite episode!

I stopped watching after Season 6 ended, the UK was behind and all I saw was hateful reviews, so I just stopped. My dad decided we should go back to it about three weeks ago, and both of us regret letting fans warp our decision. While the writing is not as strong, the show still has such comfort to offer, and I really want to see The Flash finish his last race. I honestly don't care about the visuals, I understand the budget for a show isn't the greatest.

Barry is my favourite character, and has been since the beginning; he's a hero of the people, he is such a good guy faced with impossible challenges. Joe is like the found family dad of every fic writer's dreams and he is where my obsession with found family started. The Flash really opened the gateway into all the shows I watch today, such as the 911, because I didn't really know about the 'family found' trope or that I loved it, until the Flash

speaking of music i’m lowkey amused by how in the last week i’ve been playing the same 8 orville peck songs on repeat and the meandering way i ended up here.

like, a few years ago, i remember people reblogging one of his songs, i honestly can’t remember which, and i gave it a listen and...just wasn’t into it. 

now several years ago i followed a blog for a specific fandom. and then the last five or so years they’ve turned into a fox 911 blog. which i mostly ignored but there were occasional gifsets where i was intrigued. also other people i follow sometimes posted about it

fast forward to a few weeks ago when i was like, i’ll watch an episode, as like background noise to see if it’s worth watching. i’m opening the door just a crack.  annnnd then i flung the door wide open and binged 6 seasons in two and a half weeks, whoops. 

and then i started reading fanfic for it! and then i read one that had a related work podfic by a podficcer i absolutely love but had ignored all ‘new work by x for fandom 911′ emails bc i hadn’t watched the show when the podfics came out. and i still haven’t actually listened to it yet lol but in the author notes they mentioned a favorite orville peck song and i gave it a listen and...this time i was into it. 

so i listened to more songs and have eight liked at this point in time.
