Okay so the last time Buck doubted himself and made himself expendable Eddie told him he made him Christopher’s legal guardian so since Buck doubted himself and his place in the team again I’m manifesting Eddie to go up to Buck in the next episode and be like “so I guess this is where I tell you I bought a house and you’re moving in?”
I’m just saying on the one hand yes, Eddie in Chim’s apartment. Maybe we get Buck and Eddie babysitting Jee together while Chim looks for Maddie. Maybe we get Buck assigned to babysit and not knowing what to do so he calls his most Dadly friend and Eddie comes to help and such
But what if we get Eddie babysitting Jee by himself while Chim and Buck look for Maddie because I think the sight of Eddie hanging out with Buck’s very beloved baby niece might do him in
what if we get eddie realizing and coming out to everyone and ofc buck is supportive but hey why is he suddenly kind of itchy about the whole thing why does eddie flirting with guys get him so agitated why does eddie going out on this one blind date have him feeling like this and oh. ohh.
My dream resolution to Athena’s frankly disgusting copaganda arc here in the premier episodes would be her catching the bastard again, and then realizing exactly how far she’s gone towards being the kind of cop she never wanted to be, the kind she always wanted to stop when she joined the LAPD back in Athena Begins, and having that “oh I’ve become this horrible thing that I despise”
And then she leaves the police force and the rest of her arc this season is figuring out who she is without that aspect of herself and figuring out who she wants to be and maybe that’s the meta narrative of everyone in the entire season — becoming who you want to be rather than who you think you’re supposed to be or who you thought you were or who you accidentally became.
The thing is, we’ve seen Buck with Ravi before. Teasing, fun, a dash of hazing thrown in. And then he was there with Buck and Eddie during the water rescue and they all seemed to work fine together. And he was great under pressure this week in a mass casualty situation. Ravi’s also been around since Jinx so he’s probably coming up fast on the end of his probationary year, he knows what to do, he’s not bad at his job or he wouldn’t have made it this far.
But. That was Before. Before Chim left and suddenly not having Eddie’s back, not being able to work at his side, not having his partner of three years indefinitely, four months after Eddie was shot and almost died in front of him, is now what Buck is faced with. The snappiness and general edge that Buck had in the promo is not normal Buck and any of Ravi’s mistakes or moments of second-guessing himself I have a feeling will very much be the result of picking up on that energy and it getting to him. Everyone knows that Buck and Eddie are Buck and Eddie and suddenly he’s supposed to step into that? I want to hug the poor man already. Not that Ravi needs mentoring, but Buck is not in a headspace to be responsible for anyone else when part of what’s keeping him together has been the ability to constantly check in with Eddie in little ways throughout every shift. And even if he’s not intentionally meaning to, even if it’s not fair, it seems likely that there’s a part of him that’s subconsciously rejecting the possibility of working with anyone else and comparing Ravi to Eddie in a mental competition that Ravi was never going to be able to win.
And on the Hen and Eddie front, since the synopsis mentioned issues with both partnerships…I’m just thinking about how Hen and Eddie worked very well together this week, but also how taxed and visibly wrung out Eddie was by the end of it, which I don’t think is solely attributable to it being a bad call. And again how they’re in a strange new territory where this isn’t a guaranteed temporary “it’s just for this shift and then everything will go back to normal” kind of thing. It’s indefinite, and even if he’s not actually being “replaced” there could very well be some kind of feeling there…
