Summary:

“Are you really flirting with me right now?” Carlos asks, sputtering out a chuckle full of disbelief.

“I’ve got a concussion,” TK replies, almost matter-of-factly, “it doesn’t mean all common sense got knocked out of me.”

The hospital room is quiet, and while Carlos likes Owen and Gwyn, he is a little relieved that they left. Only because the events of the day are slowly catching up on him and he feels exhausted. He has no plans to leave TK alone in the hospital and the chair he is currently sitting in seems hard and uncomfortable, but he still hopes he could get some sleep at some point during the night.

Right now, his mind is still racing too fast to even attempt sleeping. Unhelpfully, his mind keeps flashing images of the disappointment on his dad’s face in the interrogation room and the stains of blood at the back of the van and TK being barely conscious and slouching against the table.

Carlos presses his thumb against his palm, attempting to ground himself into the moment. It is little difficult, but he tries to remember that everything is fine and nothing irreversible happened.

TK Strand and Carlos Reyes hated each other's guts. 

It was common enough knowledge that every first responder and their mother in Austin knew it for a fact. They didn't fight outright, they kept things professional- except for that one time Carlos had to arrest TK for being involved in a bar fight and kept him in a holding cell for an hour before he allowed him to leave. 

The thing was, TK would tell anyone who would listen, officer Reyes had started it.

They'd met about three months after TK and his father had moved to Austin, and the man had taken one look at him, and decided to hate him on the spot.

Instead of acting like an adult and trying to de-escalate the situation, instead of attempting to talk to the man about why it was that he seemed to hate him, TK had chosen to give as good as he got. Scathing, passive aggressive remarks were to be expected whenever they were in the vicinity, and according to his crew, the result was always entertaining. 

TK absolutely hated it.

Carlos Reyes pissed him off so much, but at the same time- and TK was ashamed to admit this- he was oddly turned on by it. He'd always known he had terrible taste in men, but liking the man who hated TK on sight and hadn't said one nice word to him in the year he'd known him- except maybe that one time TK had lost a kid on the job and the ogficer had sat beside him wordlessly until the had to leave the scene, which technically didn't count since he hadn't said anything- had to be a new low. 

Liking someone and hating them at the same time was confusing as hell, but TK had had practice by now, so he was mostly used to it. 

So used to it, in fact, that when the invitation to Alex's wedding to the spin instructor he'd cheated on TK with arrived, and he decided to go as a fuck you to the other man, the first person he thought to take with him to said wedding was Carlos Reyes.

"Huh," he muttered, staring at the silver envelope. He waited for his brain to tell him it was a bad idea, and when that didn't happen, he went to the people who had no problem calling him out on his stupidity.
