FAQ
What is the WIP Big Bang? Good question! This is a Big Bang with one goal in mind: to clean out your fanfic drafts folder. These are stories that were unfinished for whatever reason, that authors returned to and completed, and the art that goes with them!
Do I need a Livejournal/Dreamwidth/AO3/etc. account to participate? No! You don’t have to have an account on anything to participate, though you will need to have somewhere to post your finished work. Having one or more accounts will help for you to follow what is going on with the bang (we crosspost to Dreamwidth, Tumblr, and sometimes Twitter at the moment), but they are not required to participate. You can always leave comments anonymously or with an opensource ID.
How many fics can we sign up for? We absolutely don’t mind multiple sign-ups. I know one year someone submitted 50 fics to finish, and got at least half of them done. We just ask that when you sign up with more than one fic you give each fic a unique user ID (please do not use the same ID for all your fics...it’s important to have different IDs for the check-ins).
Will I get emails about the bang? We do send out some emails, mostly for snippets and art claims and to ensure communication between authors and artists, but please do NOT rely on getting an email to remind you of due dates. We currently do not keep an updated email list of participants, so we only send individual emails as needed rather than mass emails.
However, email is the fastest way to communicate with the mods. If you have any questions or are having trouble communicating with your artist/author, please do email us! We will do our best to respond quickly.
What do you mean by minimum word count to enter? This is a WIP Big Bang, therefore we ask you to have at least 500 words of your story drafted when you enter.
Can an outline count towards those first 500 words that are needed at sign up? We have admitted work on an outline before so yes, if your outline is fleshed out enough to cover a 7,500 word+ fic, we’ll allow it.
Are multi-chapter fics allowed? Yes, multi-chapter fics are allowed and even more so encouraged if your fic is lengthy.
What about fics that are already posted on ao3 in part? Do those qualify for the bang? It's okay if you have posted a few chapters of your fic already (you never know when the muse deserts you, after all), we just require you to refrain from posting more until posting begins here. All we ask is that you not post any public updates to the fic until August 1st (or July 1st with the mod’s okay). We don’t want you to lose kudos and comments so don’t worry about pulling the fic down, just hold off on updates for now.
Is there a minimum word count? 7,500 words for each finished fic, but the sky's the limit, right?
I see that the fic minimum is 7500 words and that published WIPs are acceptable - but what if the WIP I’m considering is already more than 7500 words? Is the expectation to add an additional 7500 to it? No. You can add as much or as little as you need to finish the story, though we do expect at least 1,000 or so new words if your WIP already meets the word count.
What happens if an author finishes the fic they signed up with but it’s less than 7,500 words? The intent was to go over the minimum but once they got into it the story was shorter than they thought and stretching it out would make it less good. Do they have to drop out at that point? By all means, we want your stories to feel as natural as possible, and if it’s under 7,500 words you may have two options:
1 - Drop the fic for the main BB event, post it now, and wait to post it to our AO3 collection in February when we run our International Fanworks Day celebration of finishing fics that are less than 7,500 words when finished. There’s no art for the fic, but bragging rights are posted to the communities for a week.
2 - If there are enough fics that fit that category, we can do a special day of posting the fics, but you’ll have to forgo art for the fic. I, as a mod, would probably pick October 31st for the posting day, as it’s the last day of posting for the bang and I don’t think anyone will mind more than one fic that day. You can post bragging rights to the community and share the fic with everyone.
Is there anything not allowed? As long as you wrote it and you want to finish it, you're welcome to participate. RPS/RPF is fine. Incest pairings are fine. Things like that I know have been hinted at in questions asked and as long as you tag for them, we’ll allow it. Also, canon settings with mostly OCs is allowed. We just ask that it be tagged properly with any content warnings you would deem fit and be given the appropriate rating for the level of sex/violence there is in the fic. As of the 2023 round, original work is also allowed; however, we recommend you bring in your own artist or forgo art for an original work.
I have a fic I wrote a few years ago, but only the first couple chapters are posted on AO3 because I was never happy with the rest of it and knew it needed major revision. Is that something I could use for WIP Big Bang? The entire fic has been posted, but only on one platform, and it would be rewritten for AO3 and WIPBB. I think revising a fic for posting would work, as long as you have at least 500 words done, will have 7,500 words at a minimum when it’s done, and are planning to add more to the fic. Simply rewriting what you have would be a gray area, but if you’re going to take stuff out and add new scenes, either in the old scenes place or on your own, you should be fine.
What's the etiquette around OC-centric stories? Ones that are set in a well known fandom and use several characters, but still lean a lot on original characters? Are they discouraged, or fine? Based on my own personal experience making art for a story that had a heavy OC presence, it’s not something we discourage at all, but be forewarned when it comes to the art accompanying your fic your artist may not be able to incorporate the OCs into your art. Not everyone makes art of a hand-drawn or digitally drawn nature, so it helps if you have people for face claims ahead of art submissions, and you and your artist communicate regularly. You can also end up with art not featuring the OCs at all, just the canon characters, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Your other options are to bring in an artist you trust with your vision of your OC/make your own art (we do allow that, we just need to be told during the check-in before art that you’re bringing in your own artist if you go that route, or that you’re doing your own art…there will not be a need to sign up in the artist’s sign up, however) or to opt-out of art entirely. So there’s plenty of options to call on when it comes time for art. What are 'check-ins’? These are a way for us to see what you've been up to and for you to make sure you're still on track. It will give you a little nudge/reminder if you need it, but they are not compulsory. Basically a form is posted that you fill out with your user ID (unique for each fic) and a checkbox to let us know you’re still participating, plus a section for any notes for the mods.
How are the check in IDs used? They are solely for the mods organizational purposes. Each ID being for a separate story allows us to keep all the information you submit during check-ins and for snippets in one line on our spreadsheet. You don’t have to share your check in IDs with anyone else if you don’t want to.
How much progress should authors be making between each checkpoint? (Percentage-wise from our estimated total wc, I guess?) Ideally, with each check-in, you should be at least 25% closer to finishing. The end word count only really matters in that the fic needs to be at least 7,500 words when done, so it’s more your progress towards finishing that should be measured, not so much the word count.
What are the snippets requirements? In order to allow the artists to make art for the story they claimed, we require you to supply three snippets from your fic, between 500 – 1500 words each. The snippets will be sent to the artist after they have claimed your story. They're to help the artist match your story for artwork the best way he or she possibly can. It’s helpful to choose scenes or parts of scenes that you feel best represent your fic, but don’t feel like they have to be perfect to be submitted. Along with the snippets, we will send your artist the basic fic info and your email, so the two of you can collaborate more if you would both like.
What are the rough drafts requirements? For the rough drafts, stories should be at least 80% complete. You will not have to turn them in to us, just assure us that you are at that point. Anything less is at the discretion of the mods and those authors should speak to one of the mods asap.
What is, and do I need, a beta? A beta is basically a person who goes over your work to make sure that there are no spelling/grammatical errors and they can even be of assistance in helping you with story lines, etc. It is highly recommended that a beta looks over your work before posting. If you are having trouble finding a beta, try this post.
Where can I post my fic/art? Stories and art can be posted to your own personal journal, Tumblr, ff-net, AO3, or wherever you like. For those of you with AO3 accounts, we will set up a collection that will go live on the day of the posting. If you don’t currently have an AO3 account but would like one, you can contact the mods for an invitation code to see if they have any available. You can also add yourself to the AO3 Invites Request queue.
What does posting look like? Do we have to post the whole thing on the day, or can we stretch it out between when posting starts and our date? I’ve had a few longfics get killed by big bangs forcing posting to happen on a given day, and would prefer to avoid that if possible. For most fics, posting to AO3/FF.net/other places will be allowed to start in August and you can stretch it out as many posts as you want as long as the complete fic is up by your posting date (and posting dates go from August 8th to October 16th with two weeks for emergency posting). However, you can send us an ask/e-mail about posting as early as July if you have an extremely long fic/something with a long posting schedule. Mostly what we want is the fic to be completely up on the website of your choice by your posting date, and I know some people don’t want to overwhelm their readers. So we want to work with writers to give them ample time to post the story up to their posting date.
Now, as for posting to the communities, you get to choose which day your link to the story and bragging rights are posted, and as I said, we have a range of dates from August 8th to October 16th with two to three stories posting a day. If for some reason you miss your posting date, you have until October 31st to post to the community, during the two weeks of emergency posting. So hopefully there should be plenty of time to get a longfic up and posted to the website of your choice and our BB.
Will the three snippets per story we have to send in be the ones we want the artist to make art for? Or can it just be random snippets and then later the artist and I can check together to see which scenes would work best for art? So ideally, you and the artist will be communicating once you’re each sent each other’s contact information, and you’ll give your artist a chance to read all that you’ve written at that point. That’s what happens in most cases. If your fic gets picked by an artist and they don’t work with you, then the snippets you sent will be what the artwork will be based on. It’s a good idea to know that, while most of the time the artists work closely with the authors, there are a few exceptions to that.
How do I know when to post? Posting will be tiered; you'll each get your own posting date that you and your artist will decide on together. There will probably be three fics, plus art, posting per day between August 8th and October 31st. The post with date claims will go up on July 23rd and you'll have to choose your date by August 1st.
Posting of chapters on AO3 or your own blog (or wherever you usually post) generally starts August 1st, but you can post earlier (as early as July 1st) if you let us know you have a long story. However, posting has to be finished by your chosen posting date to the comm. One of the things we're hoping to do with the posted dates is to give everybody on the comm a little bragging time in the spotlight. You know, "this story was incomplete for this long, but I finished this sucker." If you don't have time to post your bragging rights to the communities on your chosen posting date, you can queue up a post ahead of time and we can post it on the date you picked or you can email us your bragging rights and we can post by proxy for you. Either way works for us. Art will be due on the chosen posting date to the comm.
What am I posting to the Dreamwidth/Tumblr community if I’m posting the fic elsewhere? You’ll be posting what we call bragging rights. It’s a small form you fill out and post to the community with a link to your fic (we’ll enable moderated posting to the Tumblr and Dreamwidth communities for members on August 8th). We will post a template for posting artwork and stories to the comm closer to the posting date.
Is there a minimum/maximum requirement for my art? There is no strict minimum, but we do ask artists to remember that the authors are writing a minimum of 7,500 words and your artwork should reflect that. You can do anything you like, including banners, wallpapers, icons, mixes, vids, gif sets, picspams, etc. Suggested guidelines for art are 500x500px (or equivalent of smaller pieces like banner + spacers, cover + icons, etc.) for traditional art, digital art, and manips; 2 minutes for vids; 10 songs + cover art for mixes; and 6 images for gif sets and picspams. We also ask that when you are in contact with the author, you work with them to see if there is anything specific they would like (i.e. a wallpaper, book cover, etc.). The art is your work, but having ideas doesn't hurt!
What are 'art claims'? The claims are when anonymous summaries of the story go up for artists to choose from. Artists sign-ups and art claims are the same thing; we use one form for both things, and that way the authors don’t have to sign up for an event they may not end up participating in. It is based on a 'first come, first served' basis and artists may choose up to three potential stories (in case their first choice is unavailable). If there are more stories than artists, there will be a second round of claims wherein artists may choose a second story to work with, and on and on until all stories are claimed for art.
If a fic up for claiming is rated explicit (R, NC-17, etc.), please only claim the story if you are over 18 years of age. Some authors may be uncomfortable working with underage artists on explicit works. We do not verify ages in any way for the bang, so this is solely on the honor system.
What do I do if I have problems or concerns about my author/artist? Sometimes authors and artists do not get along and this may cause problems with working together. If this happens to be the case with you, please email the mods and we will try to do what we can so that everyone has a chance to have fun at WIP Big Bang!
If you have not heard from your author/artist in some time after trying to contact them, you can reach out to us via email and we will try to get in touch with them for you.
Can I get an extension? Community extensions may be given in the event that the majority of the authors/artists need one. They may also be given individually under certain circumstances, but this must be discussed with the mods and will only be a short extension for posting. If you are certain that you won’t be able to finish your story in time, please let us know by June 13th.
Can I swap out a fic if my muse abandons it again? When you sign up, you give us the information on the potential fic(s) you want to write. If, say, one fic isn’t working but one you didn’t sign up for is, you can switch them out while letting the mods know if you need to change a user ID you used. It is absolutely okay to switch fics all the way up until snippets are due. By then, we hope you’ll have however many fics you plan on doing to at least 80% completion since rough drafts are due not much later. Just drop an email to the mods at [email protected] with the new information (title, fandom, etc) and if you want a new sign in ID or plan to use the same one for the fic you’re replacing it with.
Can I drop out? We have high hopes that everybody who signs up can actually finish the round and share in the joy of the reveal with us, but real life can unfortunately get in the way and we completely understand! If you feel like you just cannot finish in time and no amount of assistance from us can help you, just let us know by July 13th (if at all possible).
Is it possible to be banned? We do have a banned users list. We hope to use this to encourage participants who are having issues to communicate with the mods. We want to help you! The way the ban works is that participants, either authors and artists, will be banned for dropping out without notifying a mod. This means that anyone who has not posted or talked to a mod by the time the posting period ends will be banned. Dropping out is not in and of itself a banning offense, so please do not panic if you have to drop out! We understand that there are many reasons you may need to drop, and we want to work with you.
Bans will last one round or until the issue is resolved, whichever comes first. To resolve a ban, authors will have to finish and post the story they signed up with and artists will have to finish and post the art for the story they claimed. Three bans will result in a permanent ban from the bang.
Are we allowed to participate without joining the Discord? Absolutely! The Discord server is optional, as just another way to interact with your fellow writers and get updates on important dates. It’s not mandatory you join, however.
I was just wondering if there’s any way to enter the bang anonymously? Like would it be okay to put our work in an anonymous collection on ao3 or something? Unfortunately, I can’t think of a way for that to work. The collection that we use is moderated but it’s not anonymous, and there are the bragging posts that you post on your posting day, which you would have your username on whichever platform you use.
I was just wondering whether I'm sworn to secrecy on which fics I'll be finishing up, or if I can shout it out to the world? No one is sworn to secrecy once they’ve signed up (aside from posting new parts to fic that’s already up somewhere…we ask that you refrain from doing that until at least July 1st)! We will be running Word Wars, where you can add more to a fic in a certain amount of time, and Whine Bars, where you can complain or ask for help or whatever else you feel like talking about when it comes to struggling with a fic, all after sign-ups end on a weekly basis, plus there’s the Discord server for chatting with your fellow authors and artists.
I have a question/concern that’s not mentioned here. If you need help, you can always contact a mod and we will do our best to make sure that you get your story/art finished. The best and fastest method of contact is through our email, [email protected].

/r/Sonic goes dark in protest of Reddit's controversial API changes
Tumblr media
Fans will not be able to view the unofficial Sonic the Hedgehog community on Reddit due to a massive site-wide protest.
/r/SonicTheHedgehog and thousands of Reddit communities went dark on Monday in protest against the platform's planned changes to their app programming interface, or API.
Why is this happening?
Reddit's interface allowed third party services and the platform to communicate with each other. Protestors claimed that the site's motivation to monetize access will threaten to shut down off-site applications, drastically affect moderator tools, limit accessibility-focused programs, and alter the ability to impartially access content.
One popular iOS cilent already announced plans to shut down, as it would cost around $20 million USD per year if it were to continue under the new agreement.
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman defended the changes in a ask-me-anything thread, and claimed that the platform "can no longer subsidize commercial entities that require large-scale data use."
The changes were similarly compared to Twitter's controversial plan to cut off third-party access to its interface in early 2023, which saw many long-standing third-party clients forced to shut down.
The response
As a result, more than 6,000 subreddits elected to go dark in protest of the changes. Users either saw subreddits in a "read-only" state, which meant that there was no ability to create new comments or posts; or in a "private" state, which meant it cannot be viewed in public at all.
The protests were expected to generally last to a minimum of 48 hours; however, a seemingly defensive rebuke from Reddit managed to escalate numerous communities to extend their outage to an indefinite period.
Affecting you
Tumblr media
The Sonic the Hedgehog subreddit went dark just before midnight Eastern time on Monday.
Tails' Channel understands that the blackout will last for a minimum of 48 hours, but it could extend to an undetermined period of time "based on the general climate" of the situation, according to the subreddit's head moderator, @andtails.
"Reddit's entire business model is predicated on the use of free labor to run their communities, so the only way we send a powerful message to their higher ups that what they're doing isn't okay is to strike," said the moderator in a public post.
The statement continued, "even if you are not directly impacted by Reddit's corporate decision-making now, their decision to charge for API access may set a precedence for future corporate decisions down the line that will increasingly hurt the user experience on this platform."
Subreddit users were encouraged to "take a break from Reddit" and submit complaints during the indefinite outage, as the mod argued that the planned changes will fundamentally hurt the platform.

Finish What You Started 2024 - Event Rules
Tumblr media
[ID copied from alt: Event Rules on a blue background. ⬒ No new projects ◨ Any medium and any fandom welcome ⬓ NSFW inclusive, warnings must be tagged ◧ Tag #FinishWhatYouStarted2024; boosting/retweeting starts March 15th ◼ Event ends April 30, 2024]
The goal of this event is to get things done that you’ve already started. We all have unfinished projects whose incomplete status haunts us. Those are what we want to tackle!
The structure is loose, as this is a multimedia event. While primarily aimed at writers, this event is open to any kind of creative fanwork. Fics, translations, podfics, fanart, animations, cosplay - if you started it and never got it done, it qualifies. There is no sign-up required. I will not assign beta readers for writers, but I can boost requests for those who want them! And I can boost messages of those who would like to beta read.
The mod is a danmei fan mainly, but your work can be any fandom. Maybe something you started before your current fandom excitement took over, or one you keep putting off in favor of compelling new ideas.
Feel free to pass this event info along! The more the merrier!
Further rules and clarifications:
Alt text is very encouraged, especially for boost posts or artwork!
If your work is NSFW, I will only boost it if it has appropriate content warnings. Spoilering images is recommended but not required as long as it’s tagged. Do not letter-swap or abbreviate content warnings. These are so people can mute them as needed. Example: "gore" not "g0re"
Remember Tumblr can mute phrases, but each warning should be its own tag as well as in the body.
Please use genderbend or genderswap for characters depicted not as canon genders. Example: "#NSFW #genderbend #gore”
Please use Omegaverse or A/O/B for that content. The original letter order is a slur against Aboriginal peoples and will not be tolerated here, even with the slashes. It, like other racial or identity-based slurs, fall under hate speech and are thus not permitted.
This account will post weekly morale-boosting messages and helpful resources. Every Friday, starting March 15th, will be Finished It Friday. All the completed works posted that week will be boosted together in a big thread, so we can celebrate your accomplishment!
Halfway-point check-in is April 1st. Final event deadline is April 30th. The last Finished It Friday is May 3rd.
FAQ:
Q: Are original works acceptable?
A: This is primarily a fanwork-focused event. If original work is the only WIP you have to work on, it's certainly fine to work on it during the time frame of the event. If it is posted publicly when finished, you may tag it for boosting.
Q: Are there any restrictions on topics?
A: No, so long as your event # post is properly & fully tagged for content (see rules about tagging above). "Dead Dove" topics are allowed. Some submissions will be 18+. For me, this is less about the content and more about finishing it.
The usual restrictions based on laws and Community Guidelines of course apply, so you may need to tailor how you post to which event space your interacting with. Twitter, Tumblr, and Discord all have their own rules. There are also some topics that are in poor taste to make fanworks around. The event organizer and mods reserve the right to not boost your work if they decide it is rage-baiting or trolling. They are not responsible for negative reactions to your works. Please be respectful of those you share a digital space with.
Keep in mind that when I link to your finished work during a Finished It Friday, it may reach a wider audience than you may be used to.
Q: Are there any restrictions on media that can be submitted?
A: Machine Generated or "AI" images and writing are not permitted. If you are found in violation of this rule, you will be removed from the event. All images, writing, or other works must be your own.
This is a positive, shared space. Do not belittle other creators' medium of choice. Please no fandom/character/ship/creator bashing, and don't berate artists or authors for not being done with something, even if they don't finish by the end of the event. Also, please don't passive-aggressively send this event to the author of an unfinished fic you want to see done faster. 😥 Be cool, respect each other, and keep any interpersonal disagreements to your own tumblrsphere.
All posts and boosts will be crossposted to the event Twitter (finishwatustart) and Discord. Expanded rules, explanations, and Dead Dove guidelines can also be found on the Discord. (invite link in pinned post)
Fics can be posted to the AO3 collection (archiveofourown(dot)org /collections /FinishWhatYouStarted2024_Spring)
Work-in-progress posts should be tagged #FinishWhatYouStarted2024If you complete a wip within the event, tag it #IFinishedWhatIStarted2024 for boosting so we can all celebrate!
Find more information and community on the Discord, if you want! Joining the Discord is not required for the event. As always, if you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out!

THE CENSUS HAS CONCLUDED!
thank you to everyone who sent in their responses!
results are under the cut:
Tumblr media
for context i didn't post it on twitter but i wanted to include that on the off-chance someone reposted it there. but no one did! sad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
interesting that surv and hunter are tied in the vanilla poll, earlier on hunter was far in the lead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
about what I expected, tbh--saint in the lead with 14 votes and arti close behind with 13. big win for... murder enjoyers, i guess
also gourmand came in third which is cool
Tumblr media
honestly, i expected fp to have a much higher percentage of the votes than this! but nope, he's got less than half as many votes as moon, at only thirteen compared to her twenty-eight. win for women
Tumblr media Tumblr media
not sure what i was expecting here, but it wasn't this! i had no idea sky islands was so popular. although i suppose it makes sense--it's a very nice area aesthetically
also shoutout to the one (1) farm arrays fan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
interesting results here! i honestly expected silent construct to score higher, but that's what I get for assuming my personal preferences are universal, I suppose.
i wasn't expecting outer expanse to win out by such a large margin, certainly!
(also, as a note: LTTM [region] is underrepresented here, because i forgor about her until a few days later, meaning that many votes were cast before the option to select her was added. im sorry women)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
approximately what i expected, this! i already knew cyans were incredibly popular. not much to say here, tbh
Tumblr media Tumblr media
not much to report on here. scagenger
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the people love yeek, but they love vulture more, it seems
Tumblr media
approx what i expected tbh
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also approx what I expected! everybody loves rhinestones
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
breezing past this one because im not into shipping so i dont have much to say. i do find it a bit funny how artihunter is the only ship what was submitted on its own by multiple people
Tumblr media Tumblr media
modding might be over-represented here as by far the biggest server i sent this in was the modding academy. oh well
Tumblr media Tumblr media
....and i hit the tumblr image limit. uh. this is continued here! likely, when all is said and done, this will all be copied over there for the sake of cleanness, but I need to get this out today so I don't have much time to fix such things. Sorry for the inconvenience!

HxH Big Bang 2023 Info
Hello and Welcome to the Eighth Hunter x Hunter Big Bang!
Sign-ups open January 14th, so below are some important updates and info. Scroll to the bottom for this year’s timeline and links to the Guidebook and our Carrd, keep reading to check out important information and updates!
So, what is the Hunter x Hunter Big Bang?
A Big Bang is an event that pairs artists and writers together to create content for a series, ship, or theme. Writers will complete a longer story and artists will complete at least one piece of artwork based off of their writer’s fic. The goal is to create new, complete works that will inspire and add to the fandom! This will result in an influx of new works for the HxH fandom to enjoy and, as an added bonus, it will encourage collaboration between fandom writers and artists.
Authors will sign up to write a fic, and after they know what they plan to write, submit a summary of their story. Artists will then be able to claim the fic they want based ONLY on the blind summary. From that point the writers will be given a deadline to finish their full stories and then the artists will be able to make their accompanying piece.
How will this work?
Signups open on January 14th, for both authors and artists.
Just like last year, we are implementing a Writer Waitlist to ensure that we don’t overwhelm our wonderful and talented artists! For the last few years, we’ve had more writers than artists sign up—which, while amazing, makes it difficult to assign artists for each fic.
The waitlist means we will be accepting an equal number of applications for writers and artists on a first-come, first-serve basis until January 28th. After this date, writers will be placed on a waitlist while artists continue to apply until signups close officially on March 31st.
Collaborations, you say?
Yep! As before, artists will have the option to collaborate with their author or keep it under wraps until the reveal. Collaborating just means that authors will be keeping their artists updated on their progress periodically, the final art will still be a surprise on reveal day!
Artists who choose not to collaborate will have their pairing kept secret until the reveal—surprises are fun!
When is reveal day?
The main reveal date for 2023 is July 1st, with a late posting date on July 15th.
For multi-chapter works: Only your first chapter must be posted on July 1st, but we do ask that your full fic be posted by December 31st.
Where is all of this happening?
Our main and only form of communication with participants will be via Discord, so you will need to make an account if you do not have one already. All important announcements and check-ins will be done through the Discord server. No pressure to participate excessively in the chat, but we’ve put a lot of effort into our server and we’d love to see you there!
Posting will take place on your hosting site of choice (AO3, ffnet, etc.) and should be linked on Tumblr or Twitter so that we can reblog and retweet your awesome stuff.
With everything happening on twitter, we may not be able to use it as we have in the past. It’ll be a learning curve, but we don’t want to discourage any twitter-users from participating regardless!
Phew! That was a lot... Keep all this info handy with our timeline and some useful links.
Tumblr media
Click here for the Guidebook! This will be your one-stop-shop for any and all information regarding the Big Bang. Everything from role requirements to nitty-gritty details and mod contact info is there!
Click here for our Carrd! This will have all of our links centralized in one place and will be updated as deadlines come to have nifty countdowns to keep you on track.
Any questions? Feel free to send an ask here or message any of our mods: @shalnarkonice, @storybookprincess, or @clood
See you soon, and until then—Happy Hunting!

Time for our second "Questions and Answers" session!
Tumblr media
I, Rebi, will once again help you out. It's always lovely to see you! Here, us scientists will resolve all doubts. Remember you can ask us anything via our Curious Cat, Twitters DMs, Tumblr ask-me-anything or email. Now, let's begin! . . . «The following questions belong to: CONTRIBUTOR APPLICATIONS.» 1.- “If we, the artist submitting an application, created an artwork we believe fits in our top 3 after sending the application, are we allowed to change it before said applications close?” R = Applicants should be able to edit their form to do any changes they wish to. If this is not the case, feel free to reach out to us through Twitter, Tumblr or our email! 2.- “Are applicants going to be sent emails regardless of acceptance?” R = Yes! All applicants will receive either an email on March 11th with their acceptance, pinch hitter role or rejection. 3.- “It seems that this kettle/site is missing, is this a mistake?” R = All missing kettles/sites have already been claimed by guest artists and staff. This is to avoid someone picking most, if not all, taken kettles. 4.- “Are we allowed to use our own ocs as agent 3?” R = All contributors are allowed to use their own Neo 3 OCs in their pieces, as well as any interpretation of the canon cast, other agents and involved OCs. 5.- “Any word on the research figuring out if squids are real or not yet?” R = That’s classified information we cannot reveal at the moment. ----- «The following questions belong to: CURIOUS CAT.»
1.- “hello! I never saw the musician option before, was it in your Interest Check? I wanted to ask what is expected of a musician contributor. What kind of music are you accepting and the overall guidelines! I am also slightly concerned as I do not see a music Moderator, are mods knowledgeable about composition/production? Would there be any specific assets provided to make my music?” R = It was not, but we received some answers proposing musical involvement and we are happy to oblige! We think all art forms should be celebrated and given proper space to shine, we are just facilitating the stage.  Any kind of music is accepted. For example, you can make a melody that can blend seamlessly with the alterna soundtrack, a remix, full lyrical song about the story mode, acoustic, acapella.... It can be something as small as a ringtone or big as an album... It's all up to you! You own all rights for its publishing and distribution, we are just sharing it with your authorisation on the zine and not anywhere else. Changes to our carrd have already been done when this answer is published to reflect these guidelines. As for experience, host Rebi has received musical education and was part of an orchestra and a choir not so long ago as well. Although she no longer plays music due to health concerns and time restrictions, she is happy to help in any way to the best of her abilities. Host Tari has dabbled in composing and has musical education not only themself, but their family too. If by assets you mean music sheets or programs and alike then no, assets aren't provided. At this moment, Rebi works only with synthesisers and Tari with free chiptune/composing sites. Please keep in mind that this zine isn't serious, just a fun project to show off the members of the splatoon community and how they interpret the artificial land of Alterna!  2.- “If multiple people have the same level as their first pick and their portfolios are roughly equal, how will it be decided who gets the stage? by better pitch, other level pick availability, randomizer, smth else?” R = Stage assignment is decided solely on the chosen level availability, pitches are just for us to see how people think. 3.- “For pieces featuring Neo 3- does it have to feature the “canon” version of the character, or are OC interpretations allowed” R = All contributors are allowed to use their own Neo 3 OCs in their pieces, as well as any interpretation of the canon cast. 4.- “Hi! Ummm When we fill out the application forms and send it, do we automatically receive an automated email saying the form was sent?  I'm unsure whether or not I actually sent it after filling out one since I never received anything saying it was sent unlike other forms.” R = Please feel free to reach out through our email or social media DMs to check if your application went through or if you wish to edit something! 5.- “Do you need a social media presence to join? I plan on posting more online, but i only have a few posts on public social media so far” R = You do not need a social media presence to apply! It's an alternative if we cannot reach you through email when sending application results. 6.- “Is a downloadable pdf or a google document ok as a portfolio format?” R = Yes! As long as we can clearly see your work, it counts.
. . . This has been all for today. We thank you all for your interest and support. Now, I must go back to the Alterna center… One must keep an eye on the researchers. Some are still missing- Please look forward to our application results on March 11th!

a guide to dnfao3tags!
hello there :] i'm kay, the admin of this blog. i've been running this blog from april 29 2022 when i made my dnf starter pack post for all those new to dnf fics. since then, i've made more than 700 posts and have added many features to my blog.
here's a little guide to everything and anything dnfao3tags!
(highly recommend checking my blog out on a pc, a lot more features are easily visible that way)
new to dnf?
as mentioned above, i have a starter pack; along with that i'd like to recommend :
my personal favs
my tag navigation page so you can easily find fics according to your wishes
i also have a masterpost of a significant number of fics i've recommended on this blog, however i don't often update it so its a little useless
every month (or whenever im free), i try to make a monthly fic roundup which i post in the first week of the new month; stay tuned for that
my trope wise reclists
spotlight fic recs from my bookmarks (dnfao3tags bookmarks)
all of my fic rec posts (dnfao3tags recs) - including reclists, spotlight fic recs, fic was founds, etc
posts made by authors themselves for their own fics (author post)
fic recs made by writers themselves (author recs)
there's also a dnf ship wiki surprisingly which might be useful if you want to get familiar with them
if you're confused about any references or something, feel free to send me an ask and hopefully me or my followers can help.
'can i help you?'
absolutely! while i don't accept any more mod/admins on this blog, you can still do the following :
rec/submit a fic (self-promo encouraged)
send me a quote you liked from a fic and view some dnf fic quotes here
here are a bunch of fic not founds that unfortunately were never found. take a look and see if you recognise any!
you can also send me fics to submit in the monthly fic roundup
sometimes i can't find fics for certain tropes so i crowdsource; check if know any fics for that particular trope and send them in
send some fic ideas you have!
deleted fics
i already made a guide to how i deal with deleted fics on this blog.
my Finding Deleted Fics: A Multi-Method Guide post.
if you're an author and would like me to take down your fics then send me a dm and i'll happily do it. if you'd like, i could also only share them in dms too.
fic not found
feel free to ask about any lost fics and i'll see if me or my followers can recognize it. please please Please be as specific as possible and also mention if you think it may be deleted.
i will post your ask asking my followers if i don't recognize it and if someone helps me out, i'll reblog your ask with the found fic so just keep checking the reblogs or the tags fic was found & fic potentially found.
searching my blog
if you open my blog on pc then you'll see one search bar in the header:
Tumblr media
and one like this below the updates box:
Tumblr media
the google enhanced search box is more accurate so i recommend using that one ! however, it is definitely not foolproof so i also recommend using my tagnav to search for a specific post because i tag pretty much everything. you can also send me an ask.
cool features
i have a music player ! you can send in songs for me to add to it
any tips and tricks i have for ao3 will be in this how to ao3 tag
want some writing inspo? here are some fic ideas
you can also ask me for song based reqs
i also have author archives for anonymous authors (eg. mario anon), deleted authors and orphaned authors
click this for a random post of mine
more stuff
i have a twitter (though i am inactive there)
please read my about/faq page before sending asks
i have a tag for any posts that aren't specifically fic recs and just me talking (kay talks) which you can mute if you aren't interested
occasionally i get asks about dreamnotnap which i sometimes answer; you can also mute that tag along with my not dnf tag
and that's all i can currently think of!
i'm thinking of adhering to a posting schedule so i might post about that later. i'm a bit more free these days so i'll probably be a bit more quick to asks.
hope this helped you guys out; thanks for reading :]

Note
Hi, this will be the first huxloween I plan on participating in, and I have just a couple of questions I couldn't find the answers to in your faq. One, for the prompt submit, do we simply send in ideas for the individual day's prompts through your askbox or is it a different process? Second of all, is there a discord or similar for this event? Very excited to be participating this year!
Hello!
I'm so glad to hear you're excited for Huxloween, it's definitely one of my favourite events!
To submit a prompt you just have to send us a message here on tumblr using our inbox, or you can submit ideas to our twitter account (@huxloween on twitter). The prompts do not have to be complicated or fully-fleshed out ideas, often people just submit the skeleton (no pun intended) of an idea (example: kylo and hux wear the same costume, or kylo and hux go to a haunted house) or simple one-word prompts (example: fairies and fae, cryptids, haunted houses, ghosts, vampires, werewolves).
We'll take all the prompts and try to group them together by theme and create a calendar of ideas/prompts that we'll release on October 1st and then everyone just goes for it! You can write something, make art, make mood boards, do photoshoots, poetry, build lego or other model-type dioramas, or do needlepoint/knitting/fabric arts. You can do as many or as few of the prompts as you want and you don't have to wait for a specific day to get started - if you jump ahead, we might just wait to reblog the final work until that prompt's day but EVERYTHING will be reblogged or retweeted. We'll also have an AO3 collection set up by October 1st.
There's no discord channel as far as I know, people might have informal discussions about huxloween on already established channels but we don't have chat parties or check-ins - this is a relaxed, no-pressure event. We're on twitter as @huxloween and both mods are on twitter, there's also a Kylux community on Blue Sky.
Have fun with the event, get thinking of ideas and submit as much as you want! When you post final works, we just ask that you make sure to @ us on tumblr, sometimes just using the hashtag makes things slip through the cracks and we don't see them. Hope this helps!

Prompting is now open! You can find the prompting form here, and you can browse the prompts already submitted right here.
Feel free to leave as many prompts as you'd like using the form until July 24th.
Remember that submitting a prompt does not sign you up for the fest. In fact, once you submit it, you're offering it up for someone else to use it once prompt claiming opens up on July 25.
If you have any problems filling the prompting form, please let us know!
We're on twitter, and you can reach out via email too: [email protected]
You can also find the full timeline of the fest, all rules and guidelines on this post.
Happy prompting! 🧡

Marion, Nikki, Róisín, and Rory

Note
hey mpc! obviously no pressure to post this, just a suggestion since this blog has a decent following and we (supposedly) all like tumblr here:
reminder to everyone to submit feedback reports to tumblr.com/support!! @'ing staff isnt very efficient, feedback floods them with complaints about the new ui change!! we really should not let them think we're complacent about this, we're already dangerously close to both tiktok and twitter prior to this.
Shrug emoji oh sure I sent something but I have yet to see anything this userbase has done that has ever influenced tumblr staff. Well, positively, anyways.
Remember when partyjocker / partyjocking pointed out a tumblr staff was a huge harry potter stan and shipped like... underage ships? Aged up ships? Maybe, can't recall that detail right now. And maybe there's a reason there's rampant *isms and *phobes running around this site [because staff silence condones it or whatever that person said] Anyways, that person got banned for their troubles. And they just pointed it out, not even @/ed staff or the person's blog.
So like. Yell into the void, I guess.
Also remember all those silly log off for 24 hours protests? Yeah that shit didn't work. 'Pon Farr' is still banned here. Well, Pon Farr that isn't white or cishet, let's be honest here.
I'm sorry to be a negative nancy but realistically staff don't care. They never will. Longcat speed you if you do send something in. I will pray they don't ban your account for your feedback.
And yes I did send something in about this new layout. So there's that.
Connie / mod party cat!

Announcing Guardian Bingo 2023!
Tumblr media
Announcing Guardian Bingo 2023!!
Due to popular demand, the fest is continuing into 2023, though with a few minor changes.
Much of the fest will remain the same. Guardian Bingo will continue to be a low-stress fest with an emphasis on fun and enjoyable creation.
Whether you are new or returning from 2022, we would love to have you join us. (Returning participants have the option to keep working on their 2022 card.)
Full info about signups and other things to know are below the cut.
Cards/Signups
Participants from 2022 will have the option to sign up for a new card or choose to continue with the card they are already using. If you like your card and want to keep working toward a blackout on it, then you don’t have to lose the progress you’ve made. If the old card isn’t very inspiring or you want a fresh start, we’ll be happy to provide a new one.
New participants will obviously get a new card.
Badges
Remain the same as in 2022. The majority of participants did not claim all badges during 2022, so we’re keeping them as-is to allow more people can earn them.
Social Media Presence
In 2023, Guardian Bingo will only operate a fest account on Tumblr.
In 2022, the fest had both Tumblr and Twitter accounts, but due to Twitter’s recent chaos and tehfanglyfish’s need to have one less login to keep up with, the fest is going Tumblr-only. That’s where we’ll post announcements, reblog creations, etc.
If you are mostly active on another site, we’ll have submissions open so you can submit links to your creations on our Tumblr account and everyone is welcome to participate regardless of whether or not you’re active on social media.
Tagging
Please use #guardianbingofest as your tag on Tumblr. Or better yet, just @ us at @guardianbingo. Sometimes Tumblr tagging works in search results and sometimes it doesn’t. We don’t want to miss your creations!
Bonus Prompts
Will also continue, although there will not be a new prompt for January. Instead, that month will still serve as a time to submit missed prompts from 2022. Then a new prompt will go out in February.
Creations For Fills
The rules remain unchanged from 2022. While some information is posted below, our About/FAQ and carrd both have full details.
What Works Are Accepted?
Pretty much any new creations, including:
Fanfic
Fanart
Edits/Gifsets
Vids
 Moodboards
 Playlists
Rec Lists
FanARTifacts (tangible creations)
Podfics (with original author’s permission and a link back)
Translations (with original author’s permission and a link back)
Meta Analysis
If you have another idea, check in with the mods, but it very likely works.
What Are The Length Requirements?
None! This is meant to be fun, not stressful. Want to write a 100k multi-chapter epic? Sounds great! Is this the year you master the drabble? Also wonderful! The point is to make stuff, not worry over min/max requirements.
Is This Fest Novelverse or Drama?
Either or both! It’s totally up to you, though some of the prompts are more closely tied to one or the other. (If you get a card with a drama or novel specific prompt that you are unfamiliar with, let a mod know when you receive the card.)
Crossovers, Derivatives, And RPF?
All three are allowed, but please be aware that some prompts will be Guardian-specific.
What About Ships And Ratings?
All ratings and any ships (or no ships) are allowed, though works should be appropriately tagged.
Questions
Please direct questions to [email protected] or our Tumblr account. Replies may be a little faster with email.

Hello, Bottom Louis Fic Fest 2023 writers!
We know that some of our participating writers are seasoned professionals and have posted fics many times before, but we also know that there are some first-time writers participating in this year’s fest. That’s why we want to ensure that everyone knows exactly how to post their fic to our collection on AO3, how to post to Tumblr and Twitter, and how the posting schedule will work.
All Writers: Please Read
Fics should be submitted to the Bottom Louis Fic Fest 2023 collection by September 17, 2023 by 10AM ET. You may submit your fic now if is already ready.
You will be assigned a posting date and time by email by midnight ET on September 17, 2023.
Please include your prompt somewhere on AO3 - either in your summary, your beginning notes, or your end notes if you’d like to avoid spoiling the fic.
On Tumblr and Twitter, we recommend scheduling your photoset with the fic information and link so it will go up exactly at your assigned date and time.
Please tag us in your fic posts on Tumblr (@bottomlouisficfest) and Twitter (@BLFicFest).
Your fic must remain public on AO3 until the fest is complete.
The photoset/visual and link to your fic will be posted to both Tumblr and Twitter, either by you or by the BLFF. We will determine who is posting what through email.
Information About the Posting Schedule:
On September 17, after your fic has been submitted to the collection, you will receive an email from the BLFF assigning you a posting date and time. At that point, we will have a good idea of how many fics we will have, which means the mods of the fest will be able to determine what the posting schedule will be in terms of number of fics per day and frequency.
We will try to create a schedule that ensures variation in fic length and topic (for example, avoiding putting four A/B/O fics in a row or three long fics in a row) to help keep things interesting and manageable for readers. If you have any issue with your posting date or time, you can let us know and we can work with you to figure out a solution or move the date.
Instructions on Posting to AO3, Tumblr, and Twitter:
If you’re new to posting any of these places, please read on.
Posting to AO3:
Step 1: Sign into AO3.
Step 2: Click or hover over “Post” in the upper right corner of your screen.
Step 3: Click “New Work.”
Step 4: Fill out all the basic information for your fic.
Rating: Choose a rating for your fic. Since all fics for the Bottom Louis fic fest will have smut, we’d suggest that your fic be rated either Mature or Explicit. Mature is more appropriate for fics with less graphic smut, whereas Explicit is more appropriate for fics with more graphic smut.
Archive Warnings: If you have any serious warnings that need to be issued for your fic (such as graphic violence, major character death, or rape), please select them here. If none of those more extreme warnings apply to your fic, we’d recommend selecting No Archive Warnings Apply.
Fandoms: Please type and then select One Direction (Band). If your fic involves a crossover with another fandom, you can also add those here.
Categories: Though not required, we’d recommend selecting M/M (for a male/male pairing) and any other pairings that apply to your fic.
Relationships: Though not required, this is where you should enter the relationships that are featured in your fic. For example, you can put Harry Styles/Louis Tomlinson or Zayn Malik/Louis Tomlinson. You may enter as many pairings as you have in your fic.
Characters: Though not required, if you would like, this is where you can enter the names of all or most of the characters that are featured in your fic.
Additional Tags: Though not required, we’d highly recommend using tags to your advantage, as many people search through AO3 tags to find new fics to read and therefore may be more likely to stumble on your fic. You can enter tags related to tropes that are featured in your fic (e.g. Enemies to Lovers, Fake Relationship), descriptions of the type of sexual content that may be involved (e.g. Rimming, Bottom Louis), any additional warnings, and any other details that you think might draw people to your fic. If you need more tag ideas, feel free to ask the BLFF mods off anon or scroll through other fics on AO3 for inspiration.
Step 5: Fill out the Preface information for your fic.
Work Title: This is where you will put the title of your fic.
Summary: This is where you will put the summary of your fic.
Notes: Although this is optional, you may want to add notes at the beginning and/or end of your fic. Notes at the beginning might further explain any tags or warnings, provide any context that will help people understand your fic, or tell people what prompt your fic is based on. Notes at the end of the fic might request kudos and comments, link to your Tumblr and/or Twitter accounts, link to your photosets so people can reblog or RT, inform people what prompt you wrote your fic based on, or thank people for reading. We highly recommend linking to your fic’s photosets in the end notes.
Step 6: Fill out the Associations information for your fic.
Post to Collections/Challenges: This is how you will add your fic to the collection. Our collection is Bottom Louis Fic Fest 2023. If you need further assistance adding your fic to the collection, please contact us.
This work has multiple chapters: If your fic has multiple chapters, select this box.
Set a different publication date: Although you can ignore this when you first submit your fic to the collection, on your assigned posting date (you cannot do it ahead of the date), you will want to check this box and change your publication date to that posting date. More information on this in Step 11 below or here.
Choose a Language: Be sure that English is selected.
Step 7: Fill out the Privacy information for your fic.
Only show your work to registered users: For this fest, please make sure your fic is public at least until all the fics are posted so that more people can read your fic.
Disable anonymous commenting: If you only want users with accounts to comment on this fic, select this box. Please note that this may decrease the number of comments you receive on your fic.
Enable comment moderation: If you would like to approve comments before they are posted on your fic, select this box.
Step 8: Enter your work text. If your fic will have multiple chapters, this is where you will enter the text from chapter one. We recommend copying and pasting your fic text into Rich Text (make sure Rich Text is selected at the upper right corner above the box). If you need a guide to HTML on AO3, check here. If you’ve found that copying and pasting your fic text into AO3 created extra spaces, there’s help on fixing that here.
Step 9: Post your fic (or preview it first, if that makes you more comfortable, and then post). Your fic is now officially part of the collection and will be revealed on your posting date. You will be able to edit your fic as necessary before it is made revealed, so don’t fret if you find typos or anything that you would like to add before your posting date.
Step 10: On September 17, 2023 by midnight ET, you will be notified of your posting date and time by email. If you have an issue with that posting date and time for any reason, please let us know.
Step 11: On your posting date, please change the posting date of your fic from the day you submitted it to your assigned posting date. This will ensure that your fic is moved to the most recently posted fics on AO3, which will help more people see it. For more information on changing your posting date, click here.
Step 12: On your assigned posting day and time, the BLFF mods will reveal your fic. You will then be permitted to post your photoset/visual to Tumblr and Twitter, or the BLFF will post it for you. There is more information on that process below.
Posting Your Photoset/Visual to Tumblr on Your Assigned Posting Date:
Note: If you don’t use Tumblr, the BLFF will do this for you. We will confirm whether you or the BLFF will be posting your fic to Tumblr when we email you your assigned posting date for the fest on September 17, 2023.
Step 1: Start a photo post on Tumblr. We’d highly recommend doing this on desktop instead of on mobile because often posting photos from mobile can mess with the formatting.
Step 2: Add your photoset/visual to the post, either as one large image (if it’s in that form) or as separate photos and arrange them to your liking.
Step 3: In the text body of the post, include any relevant details about your fic.
Our suggestion would be to include:
Title:
Rating:
Word Count:
Summary:
A link to your fic (we suggest making the title of the fic into a link)
A mention that you wrote this fic for the @bottomlouisficfest (please tag us!)
You can also include any relevant warnings (which should also be tagged or mentioned on AO3) or the number of chapters if it’s a chaptered fic (e.g. Chapters: 8/8) if you want to.
Step 4: In the tags of the post, be sure to tag any relevant blogs that might reblog it (e.g. @bottomlouisficfest, @blouisparadise, @trackinghome, @1dficvillage) so that it’s easier to find. Please be sure to tag blogs within the first five tags of your post so they will be able to see it in their tag. The BLFF blog and BLP will be reblogging all of the fics at least twice.
Step 5: At your assigned time and posting date, you may post your photoset/visual post to Tumblr. We highly recommend scheduling your post to go up so it goes up automatically. To schedule a post on Tumblr, find the button where you would click Post, click the arrow next to it, and select Schedule. Be sure to keep time zones in mind to ensure that you’re scheduling the post to go up at the correct time in ET (Eastern Time).
Once you’ve posted your photoset or moodboard to Tumblr on your posting day, the BLFF blog and @blouisparadise will reblog it and help spread the word.
Posting Your Photoset/Visual to Twitter on Your Assigned Posting Date:
Note: If you don’t use Twitter, the BLFF will do this for you. We will confirm whether you or the BLFF will be posting your fic to Twitter when we email you about your posting date for the fest on September 17, 2023.
Step 1: Create a tweet to promote your fic. We’d recommend including:
Your photoset/visual
A link to your fic on AO3
A mention that your wrote the fic is for @BLFicFest (please tag us!)
Step 2: Post this tweet at your assigned time on your assigned posting date. If you are not available to post it at that exact time, you can schedule it using Twitter on a computer. To schedule a tweet, go to write a tweet as normal and find the small calendar and clock icon (this icon is furthest to the right) below the tweet box. This will allow you to select a date and time for your tweet to be posted. Be sure to keep time zones in mind to ensure that you’re scheduling the post to go up at the correct time in ET (Eastern Time).
The BLFF Twitter account and the BLP Twitter account will both RT it once it is up.
And there you have it! Your fic will officially be posted and a part of the BLFF 2023. We’re so proud of you and excited to read your fic!
