More Than Meets the Eye is the 10th book in the Kendra Michaels series from the Mother/son team of Iris and Roy Johansen. "Serial killer James Michael Barrett agrees to a plea deal at his murder trial. He leads a group of FBI agents and local police to the site where he buried his last victim. As agents start to dig, they hit something metallic. There's a large explosion that kills Barrett and most of the agents. Soon there are murders very similar to the way Barrett killed his victims. Kendra Michaels is brought in to help find this new killer. She agrees to be helped by the only survivor of Barrett's attacks. But the killer has other plans for them both." If you're not familiar with Kendra - She was blind for the first 20 years of her life. She had a groundbreaking procedure that restored her sight. But her other senses remain super sharp. This allows her to see things and recognize things that others miss. She does that often in this book also but there is less of that in this story. This is more of a police procedural. And the way leads are followed is that Lynch "knows a guy" and gets information that way. (It happens that way a lot. Feels like a writer shortcut.) Previous books have all been fast-paced with terrifying killers. Not this one. It doesn't flow like the others. I attribute part of that to the plot device used. No spoilers - it is a different take on serial killers. I appreciate when authors try something new, but it seems awkward here. And it makes the story drag. If you're a Kendra Michaels fan or if you are looking for a new take on fictional serial killers you would enjoy this one. Death of the Black Widow by James Patterson and J.D. Barker She destroys the men she loves and escapes every time. The most dangerous killer James Patterson has ever created is also his most seductive. On his first night with Detroit PD, Officer Walter O’Brien is called to a murder scene. A terrified twenty-year-old has killed her kidnapper. The young woman is also a brilliant escape artist. Her bold flight from police custody makes the case impossible to solve and, for Walter, even more impossible to forget. Now a detective, his fascination with the missing woman is approaching obsession. This deadly string of secrets didn’t begin in his home city but he’s going to make sure it ends there. I don't know about you guys but I am a HUGE James Patterson fan! Honestly there aren't many of his books that I haven't read and each and every one of them I finish in a day because I always get lost in them and this one was no different! I don't want to give anything away so I'll just say what I think about the book! This one is a little different. It has a paranormal twist but it adds to the mystery and the adventure! The pace is great and the mystery of the woman is beyond interesting! It splits between the present and from Walter's first meeting with the mysterious gray eyed woman! The murders have been going on for hundreds of years so the question is is there a group of black widows or is there one person? Overall it was a gripping and entertaining thriller turner that had me up long after my bedtime! Thank you Grand Central Pub for sharing this fantastic story with me! #GrandCentralPub #JamesPatterson #JDBarker #DeathoftheBlackWidow #books #bookreview #mysteryread #thrillerbook #bookstareviews #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #reader #bookish #bookclub #readreadread #igbooks #instareads https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf1iFdMMW4a/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

ARC Book Review: A Love Song For Ricki Wilde by Tia Williams
Book Length: 352 pages
🤩 Many thanks to @grandcentralpub @netgalley and @tiawilliamswrites for this advanced copy of the book!
My Review: I’m always intrigued by historical fiction. This book incorporated historical fiction with a twist of fantasy, in my opinion. It felt very whimsical and reminded me of Romeo and Juliet with the very godmother from Cinderella. The protagonist Ricki is an interesting focus of the story in the sense that she is complicated, determined, and eccentric. Ezra, her love interest, is equally interesting. He’s an old soul, with a dash of gentleman, and a splash of musical talent. Ms. Della had a fairy godmother vibe and she was brimming with good vibes, strong will, and humor. The three characters’ lives get intertwined in a past and present dueling storyline that culminates in a race against the clock to ensure that one of them doesn't disappear from existence. It's an interesting plot that I was on board for from the beginning of the book; however, I did find some of their love story a tad bit banal. Otherwise, I thought the overall story was captivating.
💵📖 Preorder now! It was released on February 6, 2024.

Let me tell you right now, The Art of Scandal by @reginablackwrites deserves all the hype and praise. Get this on your TBR NOW! I’ve been waiting to read this book since 2021 when Regina tweeted about it for the Pitch Wars Showcase. It’s a mix of The Good Wife, Scandal and Desperate Housewives where everyone has a secret, local gossip is traded like currency and no one is as perfect as they appear. From the opening scene of Rachel Abbott receiving a dick pic from her husband, the local mayor and the golden boy of his wealthy family, that he intended to send to his mistress, I was HOOKED! Rachel transformed herself from a teen mom to the picture-perfect Black housewife to support her White, liberal husband. And with his affair exposed, Rachel is lost without this part of her identity. The same night she meets Nathan Vasquez, a younger man who is also struggling with his identity as the spare son who lives in the shadow of his perfect older brother and domineering dad. Rachel and Nathan have art in common, and a little bit of forced proximity awakens the person Rachel used to be: someone who took risks had purpose beyond other people’s expectations. Rachel and Nathan are just one part of the story and each detail about the side characters made me want to know more about them. I’m hoping Regina will turn this into a series because I need a second-chance romance for Joe and Mia! I’m looking forward to reading Regina’s next book and thank you to @grandcentralpub and @netgalley for the eARC. Pub date: Aug. 1 - Forbidden romance - BIPOC MCs - Older woman/younger man - Low steam - WDTK? Chapter 8 https://instagr.am/p/CvAUKF3LI79/

Five years ago, an innocent man began a life sentence for murdering his own son. Today he found out his son is still alive. David Burroughs was once a devoted father to his three-year-old son Matthew, living a dream life just a short drive away from the working-class suburb where he and his wife, Cheryl, first fell in love--until one fateful night when David woke suddenly to discover Matthew had been murdered while David was asleep just down the hall. Half a decade later, David’s been wrongly accused and convicted of the murder, left to serve out his time in a maximum-security prison—a fate which, grieving and wracked with guilt, David didn’t have the will to fight. The world has moved on without him. Then Cheryl’s younger sister, Rachel, makes a surprise appearance during visiting hours bearing a strange photograph. It’s a vacation shot of a bustling amusement park a friend shared with her, and in the background, just barely in the frame, is a boy bearing an eerie resemblance to David’s son. Even though it can’t be, David just knows: Matthew is still alive. David plans a harrowing escape, determined to achieve the impossible – save his son, clear his own name, and discover the real story of what happened. But with his life on the line and the FBI following his every move, can David evade capture long enough to reveal the shocking truth? Dollycas's Thoughts Receiving a life sentence 5 years ago for murdering his son, a crime he asserts that he didn't commit, David Burroughs has accepted his fate. He is grieving and guilty for not being able to protect his son. The child was killed just down the hall from where he was sleeping. He has had no visitors by his choice but believes no one would want to visit him anyway.  He assumes his ex-wife Cheryl has moved on with her life like the rest of the world. Then one day Cheryl's sister Rachel comes to visit him. Reluctant at first to see her, he decides he has nothing to lose and they were pretty close before his whole world collapsed. He never expected she would show him a picture that would change everything. It's a shot taken in an amusement park by one of her friends. If you look closely in the background there is a boy about 8 years old that looks just like his son. It can't be . . . can it? Could Matthew really be alive? David just has to find out for himself. He comes up with a convoluted plan to escape. He has to get out to find and save his son. Then he can clear his name. But as an escaped felon the FBI is on his tail. Will he be able to find Matthew or will he be back behind bars before he has the chance? I love Harlan Coben's stories and it is easy to see why so many are made into movies or television series. They are always impactful and mind-bending. I Will Find You is my new favorite Coben thriller. David Burroughs is a flawed individual but he was a devoted dad who not only had to endure the horrific loss of his son but was accused and convicted of committing the murder. Of course, he divorced his wife. And of course, he withdrew into himself. Within the first few paragraphs, I was all in with David Burroughs. This man has layers and he is grieving. I have lost a son and I feel that pain every day. That is why I was so excited that his son really could still be alive. I would rally behind any effort for that to be true. Even when I know this story could never happen the way written in real life, it was a home run for me. Yes, readers have to step outside of reality but it is so worth it. This story is a wild ride. Intense, riveting, thrilling, set at breakneck speed, and impossible to put down. With monster twists and turns, Mr. Coben captured this reader and held on tight. There was one twist that I hated, a mere coincidence, it had to be there to set other parts of the story in motion but in my heart, I wished it would not have happened. I was so caught up in the action, I had that "oh ****, you better hurry up" moment, and was thrilled at the way David could think on the fly. I really enjoyed the way Rachel, also a flawed individual with her own issues had David's back no matter what. She also had an excellent lawyer helping her out. The FBI agents drove me a little crazy but I didn't allow their behavior to detract from my enjoyment of the story. I Will Find You is full of suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I read the entire book in one sitting. This is not the first time a book by Harlan Coben has given me a book hangover by staying up too late to finish a fabulous story and I know it won't be the last. I look forward to whatever he has in store for us next year. You will find I Will Find You on my 2023 Best Reads List as it receives my Paradise Rating.

Book Review…On a Night of a Thousand Stars by Andrea Yaryura Clark Santiago Larrea, a Argentine diplomat, is holding court with his wife, Lila, and their daughter, Paloma, at their annual summer polo match and soiree. All seems perfect until an unexpected party guest shakes his usually unflappable demeanor. The woman's cryptic comments spark Paloma’s curiosity about her father’s past. When the family travels to Buenos Aires Paloma is determined to learn more about his life in the years leading up to the military dictatorship of 1976. With the help of Franco Bonetti, a member of H.I.J.O.S. a group whose members are the children of the “disappeared,” men and women who were forcibly disappeared by the state during Argentina’s “Dirty War” Paloma's determination unleashes a chain of events that not only leads her to question her family and her identity, but also puts her life in danger. On a Night of a Thousand Stars was a fascinating story. I've read historical fiction books that were during the Dirty War but I never heard of the disappeared ("desaparecidos") men and women so that was really interesting. There's actually a lot of Argentina's history about that time period offered in this book. But it's not told where we get a bunch of information at one time we learn it as Paloma does. There's dual timelines and point of views: the 1970s is told from Santiago's perspective and the 1990s is told by Paloma. The only thing I wish was different was that I could have connected more with the characters. But other it's Intense and inspiring!
