Summer With Molly
Olivia Alger
I make lists in grocery stores. Bar of soap, lip balm, peaches. Cake mix, raspberries, strawberries, sprinkles. Morroccon mint tea, canned cranberry sauce, honeycrisp apples, Pink Lady apples, potatoes, exclamation point, frozen peas, frozen brussel sprouts, sweet pink wine, delicious, sourdough bread, honey baked hams, biscuits, sauce, honey, come on.
Last summer, Molly and I were standing barefoot in the grocery store staring at fruit.
We had just come from the beach and water dripped off of us onto the linoleum floor. We had been waist deep in the water when lightning struck the shore, where two men in yellow bikini tops watched our things.
“Hey,” they called, “get out of the lake!” The water sloshed against our stomachs, and behind us was the city, hazy with summer mist and heat. Later, in the grocery store, Molly and I ate peaches and put the pits into our pockets. Everything felt sticky. Behind us, an old woman was checking out the pineapples. “Be careful, girls,” she said. “It’s gonna be a long, damp summer for the Midwest,” she laughed.
My childhood — canned peaches on toast, barefoot in the front yard, waiting for the mail lady. I loved seeing her face, dark and tanned from long walks through the suburb, and asking if she had a letter for me. Usually, she didn't. Sometimes I'd get something from a friend, like an envelope full of dried flowers or cranberries.
I had spent previous summers with my brother collecting bugs in parking lots and letting them go. We would keep very still to feel the flutter of their tiny wings against our palms.
Words I like — damp, peppermint, lemon, honey, grape, twig, leaf, adhere, pneumonia, gypsy, water, wallpaper, snowfall, soulful, television, landscape, receipt,
Phrases I like — group project, nail polish, wine bottle, hula hoop, water droplet, present day, real time, bikini top, boxed hair dye. . .
My parents like Van Morrison.
Words that make me nervous — foghorn, pasta, daytime, listen, science, pretzel, puzzle, help, feed, goggles, me, home, Tuscan, yardsticks?
Things I don’t like — sleeping, paper towels, becoming aware of my own breathing patterns, feeling my own heartbeat, when my fingers are sticky, when my hands are dry, when I was thinking about something and suddenly I can’t remember what I was thinking about, the taste of honey, the feel of humidity, music that doesn’t say anything, people that don’t say anything, people that say a lot of things that don’t mean anything —
Inside the house, my brother writhed in front of the air conditioner. "Too hot, too hot," he said, "my brain is on fire." We try to help him, but he cannot explain.
Things I learned in elementary school — how to keep a secret, that when someone asks me to keep a secret it means I can tell one other person and one other person only, how to spell assassinate, how to sharpen a crayon, how my kidneys work, all about atomic bombs, how to run around the block until you’ve run a mile, how to sit quietly, how to stir honey into hot water until it melts, how to make it look like I haven’t been crying, how to pass crying for sneezing, that I should never tell your mom the things your brother asks you not to tell her, that I should never tell my brother the things our mom asks me not to tell him, that honey makes your hands sticky.
When I was younger, my great aunts from Mississippi would tell me all sorts of things to help me learn.
I learned that being allowed to watch violent movies is supposed to be a secret. When someone tells you they love you, you should always say it back, even if you don’t mean it. Don’t talk to people that don’t want to talk to you, because that’s annoying. Wear earrings that match your sweater.
Ways to waste time — looking at the ceiling, practicing walking down the stairs without making a sound, wondering why you exist, wondering if you’ll taste and touch and smell and see everything you want to before you die, wondering what happens after you die.
For my whole life, my mother has worn the same pink bathrobe after she showers. Things the pink bathrobe smells like — conditioner for curly hair, eyeliner, autumn, burning marshmallow root, aloe vera, night cream, shea butter, mangoes, honey, green tea.
My mom and I love our summertime together, painting our toenails on the front step, watching people go by. I wish we lived in a desert, or near a desert. Oceans are scary because they are so deep. She always says things get worse before they get better, and that she can’t wait to find her true home.
Tell the truth because lying is messy. Detangle your locks before you brush them. Don’t be a snitch. Speak up for your brother, because he is smaller and more fragile than you. Speak up for yourself but not too loudly, because it’s not guaranteed that people will listen. Always take the stairs. Close your eyes when you get nervous.
If you’re going to start drinking, make sure you can hold your liquor. Brandy, honey, and lemon can cure a sore throat. And you never want a sore throat, because if you get one, no one will hear you when you decide to speak up.

Salt Lake City Contract Attorney
“Keep it secret. Keep it safe,” seems to have been the inspired motto of South Jordan City regarding a certain document that the public demanded access to. No, it wasn’t the One Ring to Rule Them All, it was a draft document for part of the finances of a mini golf and games business set to be developed in the city. And despite the best efforts in the courtroom, it looks like South Jordan City will be able to keep it secret and safe, after all, something which the Salt Lake City contract attorney for the “grass roots group trying to pry open the confidential ‘draft document’” says was not a great decision for the public, according to the Salt Lake Tribune article reporting on the story.
legal process to access information backfired and will result in more secretive measures
Here’s how it happened—starting back in 2011 when “Mitt Romney told an Iowa State fairgoer that ‘Corporations are people, my friend,’” setting off alarm bells for concerned citizen advocates across the country. But then the Supreme Court upheld that notion just recently with its decision that Hobby Lobby enjoys constitutionally protected rights. And now South Jordan City is invoking that same idea, defending its right to confidentiality regarding the planning document for Mulligans Golf and Games resort, which residents are hoping to block development for. Salt Lake City contract attorney would be hard pressed to dispute the legal reality that the city can claim personhood, and thus protection under confidentiality rules.
Which is what the Records Committee in Salt Lake City hearing the case decided, eventually, despite the best arguments presented by the grass-roots group’s Salt Lake City contract attorney Jon Call. Call actually acknowledged that the argument that the city is a person is a valid one, legally: “we don’t dispute that,” he was heard to say in the courtroom. But was South Jordan City taking it a little too far when it “pressed the city’s legal status as a ‘person’ to argue” that the draft report “was confidential because it was created for ‘personal use” of an individual—namely, South Jordan City”? Probably. An “individual” is apparently defined as a human being, even when a “person” is not.
youtube
So South Jordan City couldn’t claim “personal use” of the document, even while being recognized as a “person.” This is where things can get hairy, Salt Lake City contract attorney Alger and other lawyers in Utah would remark. But hairy or not, the dispute was resolved in a 4-1 vote favoring South Jordan City’s right to keep the document private and confidential. Secret and safe.
That’s probably not the end of the story, however. Local legal organizer Verne Cotton finds the idea of corporations and cities as people as “atrocious” and a “legal fiction” that is “allowing corporations to hide behind the Constitution.” His advocacy group points to “last year’s nonbinding survey in Salt Lake City where 88 percent of voters agreed” that corporations are not people, and they want to see the law changed. Which would mean significant changes for Hobby Lobby, and Wall Street too, most likely.
