In playing a game, we bring its artificial borders weight. In creating something, we inhabit that world to bring it life.

I started Handplates during a really difficult time in my life... no matter what happened, no matter how much things felt like they were falling apart around me or I was going to lose my mind or it all was just too much to bear, there’d always be another Handplates comic to do. Like clockwork that alarm in my head would go off and I’d get to work on the next one, no matter what was happening. It was always, always there. It’s hard to believe it’s been over seven years... a few more months to eight.

By my estimates, the next comic will be the last one. It doesn’t seem real, and when it does, it just makes me sad to think about... but I guess Undertale itself was about that too. How hard it is to let go, and when it’s time to say goodbye...

One thing I think we’re all glossing over about Thanks to Them is the fact that Belos got hit by a car. You’re a half-millennia old 1600s New England Puritan witch hunter who addresses Hunter as a grimwalker and then calls him Caleb in the same sentence and you just charged out into a modern road and got hit with that woman’s sedan. How do you cope with that. You used to be the Emperor. You’ve been living in the woods for months. Does he think that he got hit by an extremely fast wagon. The threat that’s been menacing the protagonists since episode fucking one just got hit by a car.

to expand on my tags on the gifset of the ‘morning after’ scene from A Human Reaction:

Did Aeryn just call maps “pictures"? Somehow my brain skipped over this the first 10 times i’ve seen this episode. I think she’s speaking English? I previously thought she started a little later, like in season 2. In the past, we’ve heard her say a phrase she’s heard from John but getting it wrong (“She gives me a woody” and he has to correct her that it’s “she gives me the willies.”). Yeah, that totally could have just been for the laughs at the time (it was like ep 5 or something), but later on in the series we realize she’s speaking English when she says something that sounds off (“come here” vs “come on” in The Ugly Truth, for example).

One of my favorite things on this show is Aeryn teaching herself English from early on. And she does it by just using earth phrases that John uses which don’t translate with translator microbes (especially if he pronounces them like one word (“c’mon” and c’mere” to use that example again). But we don't know she’s doing it unless she makes a mistake.

She grew up in space on a command carrier, she's barely been on planets for more than a short amount of time, so there might not even be a peacekeeper word for 'map'. They use some kind of space charts or something. Like, how do you get somewhere in space? Look at some kind of chart that shows stars and planets. Earth/planet maps kind of look like pictures in comparison to space charts, I’d imagine. Also, 'picture' is just an informal word for 'photo' (technically ‘photograph’). Sebaceans might not have a word for 'photo’, either, since it’s an abbreviation. So ‘picture' seems like a word she got from John. She applies it to these maps because she's never seen this kind of a map, and because they look like what she imagines John calls 'pictures'.

@freckleslikestars I just saw your comment on the gifset where you quoted my tags. I didn’t remember her calling them “maps” in DNA Mad Scientist, but yeah that does emphasize my point that earth/planet maps look hugely different from what she knows as maps (which are probably what we would call star charts).

living weapon whumpee who's never known anything but pain and violence.

their existence hurts. they were made to be effective, not happy, and their masters decided that keeping them in constant pain provided better results. they're wilder, more unpredictable, and the pain keeps them from thinking straight enough to question anything.

they're only given painkillers, only allowed a respite from their seemingly endless suffering, after a successful mission. it keeps them loyal, and most importantly, teaches their brain to associate acts of violence with relief and rewards.

everyone they've ever met has treated them as a tool, a monster, or both. they don't know how to be anything else.

that is until they're rampaging through a village, destroying, killing, whatever their masters demand of them. whatever will give them a few blissful hours of numbness.

one of the villagers steps out of a ruined building and looks them straight in the eyes. whumpee expects fear, hatred, disgust, the things they see in the faces of every person who's ever crossed their path. but they see something completely different.

compassion.

whumpee is so stunned, they don't think to move or do anything at all as the villager steps closer, gently reaching out a hand to cup whumpee's face.

"oh, poor thing." they murmur, taking in the creature in front of them - part human, part animal, part machine. "they've done a number on you, huh?"

whumpee blinks at them. pain continues to course through their body, but the gentle hand on their cheek distracts them, even if just a little. all the indistinct noise in their foggy, addled mind finally goes quiet.

caretaker had stepped out in front of the being destroying their home with the intention to get through to it or die trying, and the expectation to absolutely die trying.

they did not at all expect the seemingly feral mishmash of metal, fur, and flesh to lean so heavily into their touch that they nearly collapsed into caretaker's arms.
