I've been thinking that the reason the ACOTAR fandom is so toxic is because Mrs. Maas applied real world standards to a fantasy series, creating a conundrum where some characters are allowed to exist in and operate within a fantasy-based morality (like Rhysand, the Inner Circle, and Feyre) whilst others are held up to a stricter, real-world morality and are vehemently critiqued in text for failing to meet the moral standards of our world (Tamlin, Nesta, even Lucien), leaving fans of the latter group of characters to call out the hypocrisy in text for their characters being evaluated by standards that the former aren't held to whilst fans of the former set of characters happily indulge in such hypocritical writing even while promoting this series as an excellent example of handling of real-world themes like abuse; but now I think it's more than that.
Feyre has all the powers--she can shapeshift AND read minds AND control all the elements AND control light AND shadow. Everyone loves her, men of all races want to have sex with her, she can fetishize men of color and have mixed children and participate in cultural appropriation without consequence; she can brutalize men of color and look down on and belittle the appearance of women of color whenever she wants with impunity, because she is the eternal victim. She can do no wrong; people can only wrong her. She can never hurt anyone; people can only hurt her. Feyre is all powerful, but she's an eternal victim--she's a white woman's power fantasy. That's why this series reeks of white feminism so badly. Feyre is a white woman's power fantasy.
But some white women, and many women of color, don't identify with that power fantasy--especially Feyre's "being able to oppress others with impunity" schtick--so they reach out for other characters instead. But because Feyre is the eternal victim, because Feyre is the embodiment of white womenhood, that means many of the other characters are written as Feyre's oppressors or antagonists, and the white women who identify with Feyre hate them, because how dare those characters and their stans ruin their power fantasy? How dare those characters impede Feyre, their self-insert, from being the embodiment of idealized white womanhood?
So those characters, and those who stan them, are resented. In this essay, I will--

I heard from a friend of a friend who knows someone who’s working with Hulu that they decided to give Lucien more lines and scenes in the first season because he was too hot for this not to happen.

ACOTAR Book Review Pt.5 (final)
For my final post about ACOTAR, I will talk about the way that the author's internalized misogyny is reflected in her work. (In the future my reviews won't be this long, I was passionate about this one lol). Spoilers ahead 1. All of the major female characters fit into the sister, mother, lover roles. They lack the depth to create meaningful relationships between them and the main character. The closest female character she has to a friend (Alis) does not have any characterization to make her relationship with Feyre genuine. She is simply a mother to her sister’s children, who was forced to take care of Feyre. 2. Despite this being a fantasy world, the patriarchy exists. Every position of power is filled by men (except Amarantha, who I will discuss later). Even with how power is decided, the brothers must compete to replace their father. There is no mention as to whether Tamlin or Lucien even have sisters. Why in this completely made-up world are men the power holders? 3. This is a basic critique but the way she uses male and female is a big ick for me. It’s very reminiscent of how misogynistic men use the terms. Similarly, the only curses/slurs she uses throughout the text are bitch and whore, two words rooted in misogyny. They don’t fit well with the fantasy language and, in the case of Rhys, calling him Amarantha’s dog would have been more fitting and more insulting. 5. Both Nesta and Elain are very vain and empty from the start and they hardly gain any character.  Nesta’s character is particularly self-contradictory, as she despises her father for not helping the family and later takes on Feyre’s role as protector, yet she never helps Feyre herself and actively undoes Feyre’s work by spending her money. This was half-hearted and only contributed to the lack of well-rounded female characters in the story. 6. Amarantha contradicts my point about men being the main power holders, but her character also fits into a specific sexist trope. The female villainess, often a subordinate to the main male antagonist (which is alluded to) must obtain all of her real power by tricking and stealing it from the powerful male characters. Her trickery often revolves around her using her evil female sexuality (I say with a hint of sarcasm) and she makes rash decisions based on emotions and sexual obsession with the main male character. She is spurred by her tragic backstory of male violence in which her sister is “fridged”. But of course, the real victim is the man whom she sexually abuses. There is a lot to unpack here. 7. Unimportant female characters throughout this novel are also treated poorly. Lucien’s love was killed because she was of a lower rank and he loved her. The girl Tam met the night of the Great Rite "asked him" to hurt her. The girl Feyre pretended to be was murdered and strung up naked. Amarantha’s sister was murdered by the man she loved. This is violence that is specific to women throughout the plot. Many of these details were unnecessary, especially the girl being naked when strung up. 8. The SA in the Great Rite scene. It is very common in romantic novels to portray SA between the MC and love interest, and it is often meant to read as romantic. What does this teach the reader? How do the author and reader view romance if the ideal involves the man sexually assaulting the woman? This continues when the second love interest, Rhys, not only forces himself into Feyre’s mind and invades her desires, but later forces her to wear revealing clothing, gets her drunk, and touches her, which she has no memory of. He also kisses her. Finally, he enslaves her, branding her arm as a sign that he owns her. Like cattle. And yet Tam’s character is so poorly written that the audience is likely to side with Rhys and prefer him just because he is interesting. These scenes are not romantic and should not be portrayed as such. They should absolutely not have some poor excuse like he couldnt control his animal instinct or he was actually helping protect her. It is a real issue that plots like this only reinforce.
It's harmful and the romance doesn't work.

Euphoria (Azriel x pregnant!reader part one)
Summary: You and Azriel find out you’re pregnant.
A/N: Thought his idea was cute and I’m thinking about making this an entire series of dad!Azriel. Also I’m sorry if this isn’t good, it’s my first time writing anything for acotar, but I do really like it so I plan on writing more in the future.
Pairings: Azriel x pregnant!Reader
Warnings: suggests smut, slight angst about not being able to conceive a baby (fluff to make up)
Word Count: 1.0k
Tumblr media
Azriel and you had been trying to have a babe for a while. While the only people in the Inner Circle who had a child was Rhys and Feyre, you have been mated for hundreds of years and were beyond ready.
Having children was something you had to have many lengthy discussions about first. Azriel’s trauma with his family as a child and your own trauma being an Illyrian women whose wings got clipped before being cast out of your home only too be found and taken in by Rhys’s his mother, were all things you both had to think about before even considering bringing a babe in this world. That’s not even mentioning the war you and all of your loved ones fought in and somehow survived. However, seeing Feyre and Rhy being amazing parents to their son, and just seeing Nyx in general, has confirmed what you both have wanted for a while.
But, as much as you both wanted a child, it just did not happen. It’s been years since you started trying, and as much as you love to be with Azriel intimately, it started to feel more like a task rather than something fun. There have been a few nights that Azriel has woken up because you forgot to close the bond and was flooded with your feelings of self-loathing. All he could do was cup your tearstained face and whisper reassuring and loving words to you. You blamed yourself and as much as Azriel denied it, those thoughts just didn’t go away.
After the third night of that happening, both you and Azriel decided to just stop trying. Of course you both would continue to not take the tonic, but your goal while being intimate was no longer having a baby, it was to enjoy each other. After a time, sex was pleasurable again, your mindset improved, and while you did have moments of self doubt, Azriel was always there for you as you were for him. Similarly, your family was amazing the entire time. While Azriel and you were fairly private about the situation, you didn’t hide what was going on with them. Their support helped you heal, both of you. It’s been a few years since then, Nyx was now six and it is true that time heals all wounds.
Azriel was the one who noticed it first. The sun was starting to rise, light beginning to stream through the window of Azriel and your shared bedroom. It was one of those rare occasions that neither of you had to go anywhere that morning, however, Azriel was so used to being up before the sun that he was already awake. Your face was peaceful as you slept, your bare figure tangled in the sheets, and the only noise heard was your soft breathing. His hazel eyes watched your calm face, all the while having his shadows watch both of your surroundings. Weirdly enough, his shadows also kept brushing over you, almost like they were scared to let you out of their grip. It reminded him of when you first mated, at least one of his shadows had to be with you at all times once both of you got out of the frenzy.
There was something different, something unusual that Azriel could sense that made him feel uneasy, but not on edge. It bothered him, however, as your eyes fluttered open and you shifted your body to face your mate, it hit him. Well, your scent hit him. Before, the room smelled of the previous night’s activities, but with your change in position, he could now make out that your scent has changed. It was subtle, but the slight sweetness in the air was all that was needed to figure out what was so strange.
Azriel’s face was the first thing you saw as you woke up. Despite being able to mask how he’s feeling extremely well, his slightly widened eyes, along with the millions of thoughts running rampant behind them, were all telltale signs that he was in shock.
You hum curiously before speaking.
“What is it?” you question while reaching up to cup the side of his face, rubbing your thumb along his cheek. You could feel the coolness of his shadows brushing all over your body, it was comforting yet slightly unusual to wake up to.
“You're pregnant.”
Sitting up suddenly, as if a bucket of ice water had been spilt on you, you look at him bewildered.
“I’m sorry, what?”
A grin filled with pure joy took over his face as he answered you once again.
“You’re pregnant.”
All you could feel was disbelief and elation. You could now tell that your scent was different and all you could do was look at your husband, your mate, incredulously. His deep laugh fills the room, only further showing his happiness. You beam at him as he lifts you in his arms and settles you on his lap. His bare skin felt warm against yours, and the chill that continued to brush over you from the shadows felt perfect against you. The only time you’ve felt this overjoyed was when you found out you were mated to Azriel. You brush your lips against his as he cups your face, brushing away the tears you didn’t know were falling.
You knew things were going to change from that point on. You knew how male got when their mate was pregnant, how protective they became. You saw first hand when Feyre was pregnant with Nyx, she could never move more than a few feet away before Rhys was next to her once again, and if a stranger came up to her, everyone could feel the power he unleashed to get them away. Rhys had mentioned it was similar to how males are after first being mated, but also said that that is nothing compared to how protective he felt of his mate carrying his child.
You knew that this was only the beginning of troubles you would face. But at this point in time, wrapped in one another’s embrace, tenderly kissing tears of joy off each other's face while the morning light poured in, all you could feel was euphoria.

The most disturbing things portrayed in ACOTAR
Victim-blaming: Lucien tries to help Feyre and gets physically abused by Tamlin as a result. Feyre then proceeds to call him a dog despite Lucien doing everything he could in a difficult situation. And we're supposed to...support Feyre on this? And Rhysand throws around words like "can never forgive" man stfu you prick.
Sexual Assault: The most disturbing thing is not that Rhysand sexually assaulted Feyre. It's that he's never held accountable for this and never even apologizes at ANY point in the series. There are so many examples but this is the one that is the most disturbing.
Double Standards: We have Tamlin locking Feyre up for her own good being vilified, yet Rhysand is championed for locking Lucien and Nesta up in houses for their own good. Huh? WTF.
War Crimes: What Feyre did to the Spring Court, manipulating the sentries with the whole Ianthe thing and basically getting them killed, then weakening the Spring Court rulership which resulted in all those villagers in the Spring Court getting killed, then laying the Summer Court bare to Hybern as well, are nothing short of war crimes. And...instead of feeling regret, we have the main characters saying "Hybern's actions are their own." Like bitch what? Hybern wouldn't have been able to do shit if it wasn't for you! Have some damn accountability! And the fact that Tamlin and Tarquin are vilified for this never ceases to irk me.
Grooming: Rhysand groomed Feyre. He made excuses for everything he did with trauma, then sent Feyre out to do tasks for him like she's some kind of weapon he can use. WITHOUT giving her proper information, there is no choice. And everything he does is constantly explained away, until eventually Feyre becomes his trophy wife. Rhysand basically assigns Cassian to do the same for Nesta. I'm holding out hope that Elain will be saved from the Night Court.
The pregnancy debacle: the whole thing with the baby having wings and Rhysand withholding information from Feyre is just...disturbing. Idc if you're not telling her FoR hEr OwN gOoD, it is HER life at stake and she deserves to know. They didn't even try to shapeshift her to try and save her life? Like why is everybody seemingly more concerned about the baby than the mother? Disgusting. And why is Nesta vilified for being the only one to tell Feyre? She said it to hurt her, blah blah blah. She also wanted to show Feyre that their situations are similar. That they're BOTH being shit on by the Night Court. And when she's close to a breaking point...Nesta is forced to hike a mountain? That is physical abuse. Also, Rhysand being extremely territorial putting a shield over her and barely letting Feyre go anywhere is beyond weird.
Suicide baiting: What Rhysand did to Tamlin in ACOFAS is nothing short of suicide baiting. And...only Lucien seems to really be that concerned about it? Like...are you telling me I'm supposed to be supporting Rhysand after he basically told a depressed male to kill himself?
Segregation: Separating the Hewn City from Velaris IS segregation, no matter what excuse you try to come up with. You can't claim they're all shitty people, since your bestie Mor comes from the CoN. So, there are good people stuck in the CoN unable to get out of their torment because Rhysand decided that only certain individuals are allowed in Velaris.
Performance Feminism: Establishing laws to help women and not doing shit to enforce them is performance feminism. If he's as powerful as he says, he can 100% stop wing-cutting and r*pe. But, he's a goddamn virtue signaler so he doesn't fucking care. The thing is, SJM could've handled these topics in a much better way and it would've been fine. But she completely fucked shit up here and it's crazy that some people don't see it. Part of me is still waiting for the final book where she says, psych rhysand was the villain the whole time. If so, I'll take everything back.

So…
The dynamics of ships… why is Elriel a good fit for the ACOTAR series? Why is it just as intriguing and beautiful as Feysand or Nessian? I’ve written hours and hours of Elriel fan fiction, exploring dynamics and tropes, and I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface of their potential.
It’s established that our High Lady is a fighter. Feyre can physically fight for herself. She beat the Weaver which showed her mate that she was worth of the engagement ring and fought the Wyrm while her mate watched. She defended the Rainbow. She even won the war with Hybern through fighting. There are countless times where Rhys has sat back and let his girl go out swinging.
Then we have Nesta. Nesta is feisty and learns to fight for herself. She wields the mask, becomes a Valkyrie, and even goes through the Blood Rite. Cassian didn’t swoop in and save her… he let her fight.
Now Elain. Our girl needed rescuing. She did not fight her way out of the Hybern camp through cunning and brute strength. Azriel swooped in and saved her. And you best believe if she had been plunked into the Rite, Azriel would have come and saved her immediately. She is never incited on physical fighting missions like the Battle of Adriata and the closest she has gotten to blood was stepping out of shadow to stab the King of Hybern.
Now.
Does that make you uncomfortable? Does Elain needing help make you think less of her? Is she weak because she’s not like her sisters? Is that why everyone is wanting another story with a Valkyrie falling in love with a bat boy?? Because our other heroine is too weak and needs to be shipped off to a controlling high lord in spring ??????
This is what frustrates me.
Physical protection and physical fighting is not the only way to show strength.
Nesta was WRECKED after the Cauldron. She was self-destructive and cruel. Elain seemed to struggle but eventually healed through her hobbies and natural processing of everything. Even the loss of her fiancé, she recovered from. She is mentally strong.
Feyre too, has had moments of weakness. She could have physically run out of that wedding, but her mental bondage kept her walking down the aisle. Rhys had to intervene and save her in her moment of desperation. Elain could be walking down an aisle to Lucien right now, but she’s not. She’s choosing her own path and showing mental strength.
The fact that Azriel has rescued Elain physically and the fact that she cannot fight does not make her a less powerful or valuable female. Measuring women by their ability to perform historically-masculine acts is misogyny. She does not need to conform to the masculine power standard of 90’s feminism to be worthy of her own bat boy.
The beautiful thing about Elriel is that they have both been cast aside, despite being loyal to their core, Azriel to Mor for centuries and Elain to a gross human loser who broke her heart. They love even when it hurts. Even when it’s not reciprocated.
This dynamic feeds into their bond beautifully because in each other, they find what they’ve always needed—someone who wants them and sees them and chooses them above everything else.
Azriel will always physically protect Elain and champion her mental and emotional needs, but I believe Elain has the power to save Azriel too; to open up a side of life for him where he is desired and love— where he is protected and listened to and nurtured. A place where someone chooses him above everything else.
This is why Elriel is just as beautiful as Feysand or Nessian. It’s not unequal and Azriel doesn’t need a Valkyrie to “match his strength.” Elain is already strong.

Mor and ACOTAR Mates
Mor carries/winnows Feyre when she gets locked up by Tamlin. Feyre is mated to Rhysand.
Mor winnows both Nesta and Elain after they were turned fae. Nesta is mated to Cassian and we know Elain is mates with Lucien.
Who else do we know has been carried/winnowed by Mor? Gwyn. Gwyn was attacked at Sangravah and after Azriel slaughtered the soldiers and wrapped her in his cloak, Gwyn is carried and winnowed to safety by Mor. Gwyn is suspected by many (me included) to be Azriel mate.
Mor who has the power of Truth has helped each of these women after traumatic events in their lives and has carried/winnowed these women to safety, and Mor is also the one who told Feyre that Elain and Lucien would need time to figure things out on their own.
I just find it incredibly interesting Mor is connected to all these instances and the mated/suspected couples in the ACOTAR series.

I didn't even really like tamlin in acotar BUT OH MY GOD. Even I feel the need to defend him with the way he's written in acomaf. ITS SO BLATANT, that he is only written this way to make way for Rhys because he's acting DIRECTLY CONTRADICTORY TO THE WAY HE DID IN THE FIRST BOOK.
I get the thing with aramantha changed him but JESUS CHRIST, THESE CHANGES ARENT EVEN LOGICAL FROM A NARRATIVE STANDPOINT.
The ending to acomaf is so ridiculous I'm going to explode. Lucien mating Elain, feyre's sisters being turned into fae for no reason, tamlin turning into fucking Grima Wormtongue, it's so ridiculous that it has no emotional impact, its just frustrating.
The stakes aren't even high, it's just OMG the king of hybern is going to turn feyre's sisters and the mortal queens into fae oh no!
And like yeah I get how traumatizing that is for Nesta and elain because they don't want it, but it's just a stupid stake from a narrative standpoint. It's completely anticlimactic. We know it's traumatizing, but we also know that these characters will get over it and the book will just chug along. Like they were human, now they're fae. Nothing else really changed.
And the whole Lucien and Elain mating situation is so dumb. Honestly the way romance is done in the book is stupid. It feels like a fanfic with the way every single minor character has to be paired up with each other.
Idk it's just dumb and the plot was really meandering and I feel like ive wasted my time.
I know I'm rambling but I really can't get over the tamlin thing, there are no words for how much it pisses me off.
Tamlin being the only high lord who held out the longest against aramantha and hybern's forces, suffering for 50 years and watching his people die for his refusal to submit, going 3 months forced to being eye candy utm and watch his people be held captive, the High Lord who didn't even want to be high lord and only wanted to play the fiddle but still rose to the challenge to try and do right by the spring court being reduced to what he was at the end of acomaf while rhysand who sexually assaulted feyre and leaves women in his court to have their wings clipped and sold off but gets sjm's version of a shitty redemption arc
This isn't even a "fun bad" series to read, it's just exhausting
