Return of Oscar and the Neurodivergent(autism/ADHD) reader. This time we’re having trouble sleeping. But in a fluffy way, we’re not looking for angst.

Faceclaim: Chloé Hayden

The clock on your car’s display had only just hit three in the morning before you thought to try and head home. Your third Redbull of the night sat forgotten in your cup holder, somehow not doing it’s normal job of knocking you out in a melatonin-esque manner.

You sat at a traffic light, the longest red one that night it was looking like.

As it had barely turned green, and you were on your way, your phone rang. Oscar’s contact photo displayed across your phone screen as the music you had played turned off for your ringer.

Turned the call to speaker. Both hands on the wheel.

“Where are you?” His voice came through, quiet. Worried.

“Just down a bit,” you said, “Go ahead and get to bed, I’ll be back.”

“It’s too late for you to be out like this.”

“I’m almost there” you assured him. Your home approached, his car sat outside. Your porch light on as he stood at the door.

He watched you approach, waving as you got close enough for you to see him. Pulled in next to his car. He was the one hanging up the phone and made his way to you as you shut off the car and hopped out.

His backpack made it kind of hard to hug him, you found yourself shoving your arms around his waist between him and the bag. A hand of his on your shoulder, the other in your hair. He pressed his lips against the top of your head.

“You dyed your hair,” he said, face still all but buried in your hair. You giggled in response.

“I couldn’t find a McLaren orange exactly,” you said as the two of you pulled apart. You tapped your fingers together as you went on, “I figured this was close enough, it was more of a terracotta though so I added some yellow.”

“I love it,” he said as he guided you inside with a hand on your arm.

You chattered on, even as he ushered you towards the bedroom, effectively getting himself and you ready for bed while actively listening to you speak on about something already wildly different from your original topic.

“I really like the hammerheads though, they’re kind of dopey,” you say yourself down in the bed with your comforter in your lap as Oscar pulled his own from your closet.

“I’ve always liked the sand tiger sharks,” he added as you began to finally wind down.

You nodded, “Their teeth are a little messed up.”

He got himself situated in your bed before laughing and pulling you close to him. He pressed a kiss to the side of your head as he held you closer. Just before passing out the moment he closed his eyes for the night.

You’d take your sweet time trying to sleep after him. Took the time after to stare at him. After weeks away with you only getting to see him on a screen, it still surprised you just enough to see him in person. The pictures never truly do him justice.

The day sure took it’s sweet time to catch up to you, but here at four in the morning you drifted into a steady and deep sleep.

so i’ve been thinking about oscar and ozmosis a lot and nobody is surprised but anyways

so that entails thinking about the original ozma and his ‘choice’ to reincarnate although it wasn’t much of one

and i want to talk about that!

this is gonna be really long so everything under the cut

SO!

he didn’t know what it would entail and now he’s been thrown into an eternity of dying, being reborn, merge, and repeat which essentially puts them in a constant state of motion, never getting to take a break

but we all know the tragedy of this, immortality is a curse first and foremost and i like to talk about that BUT that’s not the point of this post. because i’m already planning to go further in depth with that <3

but i want to talk about the reason he’s in this situation, the one who gave him this ‘choice’

so for a while i was like. wait. why would the gods bring ozma back if they made salem immortal so they could never be together until she learned her lesson?

but then i thought about it. and i realized that’s exactly why they choose him.

because of course there were other human heroes they could choose from, why would they choose ozma? it feels like he’d be the least likely choice because of salem, she’d never learn her lesson if they brought him back

but then think about it from their side. what incentive would anyone have to come back to life? everyone they know and love would be in the afterlife with them, they have no need to return.

except oz would. because how could he say no with the knowledge that the person he loves is still there, alone, forever?

how little of a choice he already have—who would decline a job directly from the gods to save humanity—now with the knowledge that she was alive? how could he possibly say no?

he didn’t even get to think about what would happen if he and salem fought. he didn’t get to think about what this ‘life’ would entail because he heard that she was still alive and he could go back to be with her.

and then the love they had turned to hate, only now that he was all alone he could truly realize the horrible consequences of that choice. only now could he realize how cruel this really was.

that the brief time of love that he’d experienced was in exchange for an eternity of suffering.

How wonderful, beautiful, to allow yourself to see something from someone else's perspective. To let yourself like. Everything. To allow yourself to appreciate something simply for the value that someone else finds in it. There is no meaning but that which we assign. If nothing means anything, then it can mean EVERYTHING. Perhaps life is simply a wonderful accident. Okay. Now allow yourself to stand in awe at the outlandish probability that you are conscious and sentient in this moment to experience life. The odds are beyond calculation. Stand witness to the wonder of your own existence, improbable as it is. And allow yourself to know joy in anything and everything.

Here is a purpose: If, like me, you need a way to be useful, if only to justify your own existence, then let your reason for living be to appreciate your good fortune. Let yourself enjoy and accept good things, like kindness, and peace. Not cuz you deserve it, not cuz it was a gift or whatever and you wanna be gracious, nah...just cuz it's there and you're there. Might as well.
