Panic! at the Disco finished up their first headlining tour on May 4th and flew back from Europe. The most important thing to carry over from that trip was the haircut Brendon gave himself in a Paris hotel (I’m clearly recounting the important stuff here). Some other events & details from May that stuck out to me:

May 7 – Bamboozle in New Jersey

this was Brent’s last show with the band.

FBR brought 9 bands to Bamboozle (including Paramore, October Fall, Cute Is What We Aim For, The Hush Sound, P!ATD, Forgive Durden, & Fall Out Boy).

P!ATD went onstage when Fall Out Boy played part of IWSNT during their own set on Saturday night (May 6th).

the P!ATD guys also took over FOB’s instruments... I had grown used to Ryan playing bass when he was onstage with FOB, so I didn’t recognize what he was holding now (turns out it was Joe’s guitar). This clip is blurry but Ryan’s still fun to watch.

Steven from SURS talked to the band again.

there was a story going around that Pete & P!ATD started a small food fight by the tables.

This was Jon’s first show with P!ATD since Brent failed to show up yet again when the band needed to leave Vegas. Jon had been at some kind of prom or dance with Cassie when he got the band’s call asking him to take a last-minute flight to LA. He’d had some advance notice that he might be replacing Brent (Jon said in 2008 that the band had told him during the Truckstops & Statelines tour that it wasn’t working out with Brent, and talked to Jon about possibly taking Brent’s spot eventually). But Jon still had to figure everything out by ear. He listened to the album (especially on his red-eye flight) and then went onstage without fully practicing with the band. Basically, in less than 24 hours Jon proved he had a bunch of characteristics that Brent was lacking.

Fans could watch the show online and we were trying to figure out why the bass player didn’t exactly look like Brent.

Brendon’s awesome stage entrance had been one of my favorite parts of the UK shows a few weeks earlier... I was so happy to see it in a well-lit setting.

TAI was also at the KROQ Weenie Roast, so I really hope they got to see Jon suddenly onstage with P!ATD. That would’ve been a pretty surreal moment after they had all toured together for a couple months.

Ryan’s hair is one of the main things I remember about this show. The ryhawk had been steadily forming this spring, but he had the lower layers trimmed a bit now so the ryhawk was fully there and really stood out. Some fans were confused if the wind was blowing his new mullet around or what was going on with his hairstyle.

Kerrang’s coverage said that “meanwhile on the main stage 20,000 or so kids are going apeshit to Panic! At the Disco’s I Write Sins Not Tragedies and a black-clad piano-playing Brendon Urie is telling the bros moshing in the front to ‘step back and not be jackasses.’”

This picture is definitely not from Ryan’s father’s funeral.

May 17: the band officially announced Brent’s departure (here’s a post about that whole situation and how it affected the band throughout the summer).

May 18: Tom Conrad signed off his TAI journal entry with “ps. jwalk. take care.”

May 27: HFStival in Maryland (here’s a fan video)

May 29: Spencer & Brendon were at the kickoff for MTV’s summer programming (+ some fan pics). The most noteworthy part of that was Brendon’s new red glasses. I heard they were possibly either Versace or Paul Frank... fans were definitely trying to track them down and get a pair.

FOB continued to play part of IWSNT at some of their shows this month. They also showed the IWSNT music video sometimes while their stuff was getting set up... basically they were back to majorly pushing P!ATD (probably since the first national headlining tour was starting soon).

(Bden was already hanging out with his future girlfriend. I’ll omit her name for the sake of privacy and just refer to her as Bfunk if I need to say anything since that’s what the fandom called her back then. The only thing about her that feels relevant is how apparently she was a mod in the Team Jon fan community to support Brendon because he was all about Jon Walker).

There were very few band updates & significant news this month (other than the Brent thing). Ryan told people to go buy Forgive Durden’s new album. Otherwise, the band used their time “off” to practice for the summer tour and totally redo their live set...

PRACTICING FOR THE SUMMER TOUR

P!ATD went back to their practice space in May to figure out how to create an entertaining headlining show from only one album (the UK tour in late April had been pretty basic, but the band could do way more with a longer national tour). Jon had just arrived, along with two new touring musicians (Eric & Bartram). Those guys weren’t too far behind since everyone else was re-learning the updated versions of songs too. Then the Lucent Dossier performers showed up at the end of May to work out the choreography with the band.

This was nine months after P!ATD had played their first live show ever. They had already added some cool interlude parts that spring when they’d started playing festivals and headlining shows, but now it went even further. Spencer explained in several interviews how they took inspiration from the way that the Counting Crows would transform one single song into a lengthy live piece with transitions. P!ATD ended up weaving the first 4 songs of their show into one continuous piece with new interludes.

Spencer to Billboard: "It's funny, before we had to originally learn how to play our songs to backing tracks because we couldn't obviously perform all of the electronic stuff and all of the cellos and trumpets. But now that we have two extra musicians out with us, it allows us to do most of everything we couldn't do so when we were getting ready for this tour, we had to go back and re-learn how to play all of our new songs with these new guys and then on top of that add whatever we wanted to add. ... The past six months have been just so crazy and amazing for our band. It’s been moving so fast that we've been trying to keep a hold of the situation and really just keep our feet on the ground."
