more rambling thoughts about wuthering heights now that i've finished my re-read

1 wuthering heights is basically the looney tunes if the looney tunes were goth. 90% of the novel is people arguing, dying, and running around threatening to kill each other, and often all three of those at once.

2 love how it's filled with dark humor. "he's such a cobweb, a pinch would annihilate him" is such a camp thing to say about the terminally ill child you abhor and who you spend weeks trying to set up on dates with your dead lover's child so you can steal her property when your son finally dies. heathcliff lecturing his son on Seduction 101 right in front of cathy 2.0, trying ridiculously to play cupid and compel them to fall in love with each other before giving up and just kidnapping her instead... surely he's the most insane brontë man?

3 i can't remember what i had for dinner last night but nelly dean can remember what the weather was like on any given friday twenty years ago (love her and her snarky comments)

4 love how after nelly finishes telling the story to lockwood she's like "any way. so you know cathy 2.0 is single right ;)))" and then cathy 2.0 shows zero interest in him. so then he's like "oh i just remembered i have somewhere to be :/" then fucks off to london for nearly a year then when he comes back nelly is like "nvm as it turns out cathy and hareton are actually soulmates lol who knew! gee, it's a good thing she didn't like you!" and he's just silently suffering. emily was just fucking around here. hindley was the only linton/earnshaw/heathcliff who was wild enough to marry someone who didn't share either his gene pool or his neighborhood.

5 i imagine joseph to look like smeagol from the lotr films but taller

6 [heathcliff, after stabbing his alcoholic arch nemesis and then pushing his servant into the puddle of the blood] "Wash that stuff away; and mind the sparks of your candle—it is more than half brandy!” LMAO

7 this opinion list is just turning out to be a list of the most insane heathcliff moments but truly the novel should've just been called "heathcliff"

8 heathcliff's weird paternal feelings for hareton, saving hareton's life, him saying he would truly love him if only he wasn't hindley's child, basically giving hareton his blessing to love cathy 2.0 toward the end... so oddly endearing

9 heathcliff walking out just before the "i am heathcliff" part of her speech. why WHY

10 hindley protecting isabella from heathcliff before she flees was nice and i wish we saw more of their dynamic around the heights. honestly aside from the child neglect (which is par for the course in wuthering heights) hindley is a pretty sympathetic character; his rivalry with heathcliff was fueled by both sides and truly the fault of their father for pitting them against each other by letting heathcliff usurp hindley's place of favoritism as a boy. hindley's gambling and drinking, his general dissipation and failure to secure his son's future, are all tragic.

11 i think hindley/edgar/heathcliff are all interesting foils for each other; they each lose the women they love and are left to be single fathers, and each responds to the task totally differently. if we include mr. earnshaw, all the fathers in the story essentially fail their children after all the mothers die. hindley and heathcliff have a special parallel through their lifelong brotherly competition, the women they love both dying in childbirth, and in their own deaths. hindley slowly kills himself while ignoring everyone around him; heathcliff also kills himself, but only after trying to systematically ruin the lives of everyone around him. they also say that they want to kill each other but fail when they try; heathcliff nearly kills hindley but ends up saving his life at the last minute.

12 heathcliff jr. is so terrified of heathcliff sr. and so traumatized and petrified by fear and he doesn't deserve the hate he gets for being annoying. he's been sheltered his whole life, his mother just died, he was sent to his uncle/cousin only to be immediately torn away from them to be abused by a stranger who treats him horribly, he's terminally ill, he's still a kid, he's threatened into marrying someone he barely knows, etc.

13 if any of you have seen the british comedy show "the young ones" that's literally hindley's household in wuthering heights when joseph/hareton/hindley/heathcliff/isabella all live together. the filth, the slop for dinner, the petty games, the violence, the fierce hatred yet weird loyalty to each other, etc.

14 i really wonder how cathy would have reacted to heathcliff's treatment of everyone else if only she had known the full details (ie his harsh abuse of isabella, his son, cathy 2.0, etc.)

15 heights was my first brontë novel but i think i like jane eyre and tenant better now that i've read them all back to back! next on the list is likely agnes gray. anne, my underrated queen!

Extra+rambling under cut

Me when clear all Cathy (feat: my pm oc/insert)

No but I started to cry when it got to this stage of the node and man I clicked on the thing like 30 times before clicking on the clear all Cathy. MAN I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST A COOL JOKE UGHHHH. Also Cathcliff is one of my favourite PM ships now they’re just cute.

Random note but I couldn’t finish this when the 3rd part of the canto came out because my iPad kept crashing on the Vergilius node and I had to wait like 1-2 days before I was reunited with my computer to finish this so I missed out on the cleared before nerfs : ( (The moment I got home after a 8 hour flight and 2hr ride home I played through the last bit because I didn’t wanna be spoiled lol, and a lady at the airport got me sick too so I was jet lagged, tired as hell and sick but first priority was limbus lmao)

But like, seriously this canto made me spiral on this one thought. So in the canto it is explained that souls can’t like move on to actual death death because the Wuthering Heights manor is built on a stream. This stream that’s the same thing that the original seed of light project utilised to make cognito and in lobotomy corporation it’s derivatives such as enkephalin and the light/ golden boughs.

And we learn in Lob corp that cognito is pulled up through a well, likely connected to another stream of sorts. (Or is it just the bucket/ Carmen’s nerve system?) (because if it’s just that everything else here’s just invalid lmao)

So like if every branch had a well, which they would because they will have the extraction team to get more abnormalities that means there was a ‘stream’ of sorts underneath every Lob corp branch.

That means in every facility there’s just ghosts haunting the place. Everywhere. And people who died in those places even after Lob corp fell, (Aya, Yuri, the bug veterans) is also just ghosts there now???

Imagine Yuri just dying in that branch and is greeted by the ghosts of all her former co-workers and they’re just like oh cool you managed to get out but why tf did you come back or something.

But this is more interesting for the main facility, the main branch because of Enoch/ Tiphereth B and the light that happened. So Carmen and Ayin got sucked up into the light right? So what about all the other dead souls unable to go on because of the stream? Did they get sucked into the light as well? So is there just a hive mind of people up there we don’t know about? Especially for Enoch since he was a pretty big player in the script and everything. (Here’s where I shall just ramble about the little boy because I quite like the little man) If he got swooped up into the light as well what would his interaction with Carmen be like. I would think he’d just forgive her because he knew what he was getting into. But what about Ayin? Would he understand that this was for a better purpose or be angry at what he made the others (especially Lisa/ Tipherepth A) go through? And additionally would he be angry at Lisa? I pose this question because he wanted to have a purpose, a bigger reason to be living and would he view her letting him be killed (again) as something sad because he could never experience the end of the script and the result of his work/ his ‘purpose’ that he lived to create. Or would it be a little more messed up where he finds his purpose in the light, helping distort people/ gain EGO. (Mostly gain EGO as the preferable outcome, Carmen in Leviathan says something to that extent where’s it’s better for people to ignore her and develop EGO) (I think, I haven’t really read it, just watched random analyses using Leviathan for evidence) And if all the dead people in the main facility is in the light imagine what the actual hell they could do. Like that’s so many people in there.

Also if they are all in the light Tiphereph reunion isn’t impossible, but unlikely since Tiph A has gone through her character develop already :T but I want to see that. How Tiph B feels about what Tiph A did both with pushing Carmen further down depression and her decision to put him down for the sake that he didn’t have to suffer. And just how Tiph A would react to seeing/ hearing him in the light which she probably won’t think it’s a good thing he’d getting caught up with Carmen again : P

Also could the records team have something to do with this fact as well? Like does this explain how the dead are able to come back other than the time thing?

Saw an argument questioning why Wuthering Heights is taught in school since it's a racist book with harmful stereotypes where the villain is a dark skinned man who wrecks havoc in the lives of civilized white people. Now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that the exact opposite of what the book is doing? I mean not only is Heathcliff not the villain but there's no 'good' people in the book? Everyone is despicable (pretty much) and the book also shows how people's attitude towards Heathcliff changes once he gets rich and becomes a 'gentleman', and how the toxic environment of Wuthering Heights changes a seemingly sweet-natured girl like Isabella for the worse. Also, in the second generation, Hareton, the white boy is the 'savage' and Linton who is Heathcliff's son is the 'gentleman', so again and again it seems like Emily's point is that it's not people's skin color that makes them, but the environment and the way they're treated. But like that discussion had so many people agreeing that I'm questioning my own understanding 😭

(I do get why some people don't like that both Heathcliff and Linton die and the property is returned to the two white families. But also, in a literal sense, he does get his revenge against the two white guys who did him wrong but young Cathy and Hareton had no part in Heathcliff's suffering and they both did develop and became better individuals something which Heathcliff and Catherine failed to do, partly because of their circumstances and partly because they're Heathcliff and Catherine. I'm talking a lot of nonsense but what I'm trying to say is no-one defeats Heathcliff, Heathcliff defeats himself by blindly running after revenge)

Yeah lmao. That's misreading at its unfinest. It's also, frankly, simplistic and anti-intellectual, and to quote what I reblogged yesterday, fundamentally a conservative argument instead of a progressive one.

Heathcliff is human.

That's kinda the point. Heathcliff gets dehumanized by everyone around him, so he becomes Lord Byron basically, which is a human reaction. Like, not everyone reacts to abuse (including racism) in a positive way, and not every story has to be a morality tale. Wuthering Heights is dark and gothic, more tragic than fairy tale. It also never pretends to be anything it isn't.

Anyways, the attitude that because Heathcliff is not a good person means that he's a racist caricature is not actually progressive. That's delving into another racist trope--the idea that the color of a character's skin determines how they can be portrayed.

Heathcliff is a person. Well. He's a character. But he's very, very human, and that's what makes the character so controversial and resonate so deeply centuries later. Readers are intended to wrestle with the novel's themes, with their empathy for the characters and with their horror. Ironically, these kinda of stories are, imo, far more likely to provoke actual progressive personal growth in a reader than a modern YA story that uses characters as tokens.

Look, I'm not out here trying to argue that there's nothing to critique in the classics, or even that someone can't be triggered by this issue and its portrayal in this particular novel. It's still a 19th century English novel. Was it progressive for its time in a lot of ways? Kinda. Was it still a product of its time, though? Yes, absolutely. (So are we all.) Are there elements to criticize regarding its portrayal of race, among other social issues? There definitely are.

To repeat myself, there's plenty to be critiqued. However, to argue that the entire book shouldn't be taught based on this is... no. It's a bad conclusion, and it's a dangerous argument.

The critical thinking skills are so lacking that it's alarming and reflective of the ouroboros of society: the serpent consuming its tail, young people who think they're being very progressive but who are actually just wrapping around to become the exact thing they purport to preach against.

Literature is an art meant to reflect the messiness of humanity. Wuthering Heights is so well-known because it does that very well for a lot of people. Not everyone, but that's okay. If you remove the messiness, you don't have humanity. If you blunt the pain, you're not being honest. If you're not being honest, you're perpetuating the problem.

What made WH so scandalous at the time?

Many things!

—There were a lot of implied or outright stated “ugly realities” in the novel. Heathcliff is brought to the Earnshaw household as an “orphan” (who we can now interpret as being possibly a person of color, though I don’t know how much Emily intended that—it’s something some readers may also have interpreted from the language she used). He has no real reason to be there being Mr. Earnshaw just picking him up. Why did he pick him up? Is he a bastard? And if that’s the case, did you just read a book about two half siblings being in love?

Even if you don’t, the fact that Heathcliff and Cathy do grow up together and spend all their time together while falling in love suggests a lot of potential intimacy, which extends beyond her marriage to Linton. The book may not say that they FUCK behind Linton’s back, but Cathy and Heathcliff remain IN LOVE behind his back. Or like, basically in front of him. These types of raw emotional issues were not something people on high necessarily wanted the masses reading about.

—Both leads suck! Cathy is a selfish brat who really doesn’t care about stepping on Linton’s heart, and she really fucks with Heathcliff’s head as well. She doesn’t suddenly become a better person through marriage, and even after she has her baby, she seems kinda like a shithead as she’s dying. I love her.

Heathcliff is much worse, obviously. Beats his wife to the point that she flees his house, abuses his sons both biological and surrogate. It was pretty shocking at the time.

—Even if sex is not on the page (exactly—there are definite allusions to Isabella and Heathcliff’s sex life and Isabella being physically attracted to his wild coarseness) it’s a really carnal book. Linton is mild and relates to civilized society, something Cathy does love and knows she should love. Heathcliff relates to the nature she adores and grew up rolling around in. She can’t shake him. He’s very tangible; you get the idea that they grew up cuddled together and constantly holding hands and just being obsessed with one another. His expression of his love for her is very violent—when she dies, he smashes his head against a tree until it bleeds. These things read as very erotic, and would’ve read as more so in an era when you didn’t have sex on the page. And these are, again, two horrible people who never marry and hey! Could be brother and sister for all we know, lmao.

—Heathcliff is an orphan of the lower class who happens to be taken in by a well off family. He nonetheless raises himself to be a wealthy man, and in many ways much of his anger seems fueled by a resentment towards the upper class, in part because it took what he wanted (Cathy). He not only has a child with an upper class woman, but takes revenge by forcing another upper class woman to marry his son, claiming her father’s line. A lower class protagonist rising and essentially unleashing his wrath on the upper class was very threatening and suggests a level of sympathy with this upward mobility.

—It’s a very spooky book. Cathy’s ghost appears at Heathcliff’s window. Heathcliff digs up Cathy’s corpse… why? Uh, who knows….? Heathcliff explicitly begs Cathy to haunt him after she dies because he’d rather have her dead and with him as like, a shade, than dead and at peace. Heathcliff is often described in these demonic terms, which gives you a sense both of people being afraid of him because he is lower class and rich, and because he offers a kind of earthy carnality than doesn’t belong in their society.

Anyway, these are some of the reasons! It’s a gorgeous book, and one of my all time favorites.

It appears that Frozen Teardrop still gets a lot of hate which is unfortunate since it’s a pretty good series. I understand not liking it if you haven’t read it since I didn’t either due to what was said about it online, but after giving it a chance I enjoyed it quite a lot! I also learned that most of the stuff said about it online never even happened,,, 

Frozen Teardrop only reveals to the reader what the new characters, such as Fenrir and Cathy Po, know as the plot progresses. This has unfortunately caused a lot of misinterpretations from the western fandom who only had brief summaries to go off as FT was releasing. I want to clear up some of the more popular misinterpretations here, especially the common ones from TV Tropes and Gundam Wing Wiki (The wiki can’t even decide whether Sabrina and Katrina are her grandmother and great aunt or mother and aunt, so it shouldn’t be used as a source for FT anyway lol.)

This post is long, so it is under the read more. There are also spoilers so don’t read if you are waiting for the translations.

Wufei and Duo hate each other:

This is a language issue. Cathy Po is confused as to why Duo (Father Maxwell) and Wufei (Master Chang) are so informal with each other (talking down to each other rather than using more formal speech to address each other). In Japan if you don’t know someone/aren’t very acquainted with someone, you never talk down to them.

From her POV it seems odd that a Master and a Priest would talk to each other so casually whereas in Japan their language to each other should be much more formal given their status. This actually shows that Wufei and Duo are close enough (childhood friends) to talk casually but it comes as a shock to an outsider such as Cathy.

Heero wants to kill Relena:

Heero wanting to kill Relena is more for suspense for new GW fans and also as the reader is only given what knowledge Fenrir and Cathy Po have. From their Pov Relena needs to be assassinated but as the OG pilots know, she is just a scapegoat of the Lanagurin Republic and the fights with the Peacecraft’s are to throw the Republic off. 

Heero himself wants to kill the name “Relena Peacecraft” (not Relena herself) so she can go back to being “Relena Darlian” and change the world as she wants on her terms rather than be burdened to carry the Peacecraft name. This gets revealed in the Preventor 5 chapters as well as in later chapters, but the old translations and summaries only covered the early volumes.

Relena does originally need to be killed to end the Perfect Peace Program virus which is why the G-pilots are trying to get to her but Heero is the one who comes up with the plan to find the origins of the program to stop it instead so she can live (hence why his “I’ll never kill again quote gets repeated over and over again).

*Duo almost gets his own subsection lmao, poor guy gets the hate the worst,,,

Duo abandoned Fenrir:

Duo had already mutually divorced Hilde and she chose to not tell him she was pregnant. He didn’t know he had a son so he can’t really be blamed for not being around as he was respecting Hilde’s space.

Duo cut his hair for no reason/ it’s ooc:

In Japan, a character cutting their hair signifies personal change and wanting to grow. Hilde points out that his braid is a reminder of Sister Helen and losing her and everyone else close to him which is why he continuously pushes others (especially Hilde as shown in the Anime and Manga) away. He initially disagrees with her but soon realizes she has a point and wants to change his ways leading to a dramatic scene of him cutting his braid and saying goodbye to Sister Helen, Father Maxwell and Solo with his newfound determination to stop pushing others away.

Duo left his debt of the church to Hilde on purpose:

Duo inherited the church’s debt from a priest he had helped, again against his knowledge. The only reason Hilde was stuck with the debt was because she went to evaluate it to sell and pay the debt but realized there was still orphans there, so she wanted to take care of them until they were adopted. Unfortunately, as Duo points out, because of the war there’s more orphans every time he visits. 

Also, once Duo finds out about the church, he starts sending his bounty money he earns to pay it off.

Duo is a jerk dad:

This is a combination of the above misinterpretations as well as a language thing. Both Duo and Fenrir have brash/sarcastic speech patterns that don’t translate well, mixed with Fenrir being an Unreliable Narrator:TM: that tends to exaggerate, they come across as mean. We know from how they talk about each other that they both really care as well as from their actions. Fenrir sews part of Duo’s Santa suit into his iconic jacket, Duo gloats about his son to the other pilots, Fenrir learned all he knows from Duo, Duo made excuses to see Fenrir despite Hilde saying he wasn’t his son, Fenrir keeps Duo’s cowboy hat, etc.

Relena is brainwashed:

She wasn’t brainwashed at all. She was used as a scapegoat for the Lanagurin Republic the same way Romefeller used her as Queen Relena. They know the people will trust anything the government says as long as it comes from Relena.

Katrine is a clone:

Katrine is just another one of Quatre’s test tube sisters, she was just born after their father died (frozen embryo I assume?). She herself believed she’s a clone because she is brought up in a hospital (raised by her sister Irene Winner) and has a friend who is a “spare parts” clone for their own sister. 

When her friend's sister dies and the friend becomes the “main daughter”, the friend projects on to Katrine calling her a spare parts clone, but Irene assures Katrine it isn’t true and that she is just as loved as her other 30 siblings.

Maybe this changes later? I haven’t got to the part where Quatre narrates yet so maybe he says something different but as far as I know this is debunked.

Katrine is only 10 making her romance with Phobos/No name gross:

Katrine is also 15 but the way that Mars years' work, I can see where the fandom got confused. There’s a part where it mentions she is a kindergartener, and 5 Mars years pass to bring us to just before the main plot. But 5 Mars years = 10 Earth years meaning she is actually 15ish (I’m presuming to be the same as the GW anime) and not 10.

Sabrina Peacecraft was locked away:

She wasn’t locked away rather she was the “lonely rich girl” much like Relena. She preferred to be in her room alone, playing the piano with her cat Sam but wasn’t a prisoner. The Cinderella references being the fairy tale to represent Katrina and Sabrina might have confused things? But as far as their back stories go, the cruel father locking her up wasn’t mentioned at all.

This is what I can remember off the top off my head, but it gives a good idea of just how much fandom culture can warp things. There is way more than what is included here though, and I’ll probably bring up more later. 

Frozen Teardrop isn’t perfect, but neither was Gundam Wing. GW was batshit insane but imo that’s what makes it so endearing 💖. Frozen Teardrops flaws are what you’d expect from the same writer and universe as GW and definitely doesn’t deserve the hate it gets, so please give it a chance! Or at the very least don’t spread misinformation about it if you haven’t read it or haven’t read it since its release (the constant bashing can cloud your own memory and opinions so a reread may be necessary).

I know that in the musical they seem like polar opposites, but maybe they kept some traits from their past lives and they are both really good at needlework or something along that way.

seymour yelled down the hallway

an inconsistent echo of “nopee“ from 4 of the queens followed.

“hm” jane shrugged and got back to her crochet, she was about to start making a pride flag/blanket for her and her girlfriend, catalina; to take to the pride march in a few weeks.

annoyed, the third queen wandered into her girlfriends room, just to spend some quality time together. Lina was on her phone, distracted and dazed. Jane queried her on the suspicious disappearance of her brand new yarn. “i don’t know mi querida.”, catalina answered without looking away from her phone

“oh well” seymour rapidly sat upright, determined to continue with her day, disregarding her missing wool.

Cleves was scared for a second- she hadn’t figured it out in time! she had to return the yarn without jane noticing, anna knew she wouldn’t be mad but it was incredibly misfitting for her to be crocheting. Can you imagine how anne would make her feel? the insults and ‘bullying’ that would follow? (although cathy wouldn’t allow it, there’d still be tension)

the hook wasn’t looping and the yarn was fraying, ‘ugh, how do jane and cathy do this??’ anna thought while she unpaused her youtube tutorial playing on her phone.

a few days later

jane had the thought of her wool in the back of her mind - she was reluctant to buy a new set of her wool as the brand that she found best was on the more expensive side - and jane was always one to rather save her money and spend wisely for special occasions.

Laundry basket in hand, she wandered into anna’s room to put her freshly washed clothes onto her bed to be put away.

Jane was often the one doing the laundry for the queens but wasn’t opposed to it as it usually kept her busy.

Cleves was downstairs playing mario kart with kitty and anne, and had seemingly rushed downstairs in a hurry.

Jane spotted something in the corner of her eye. Her red wool! it was hidden under anna’s pillow? - not very well, clearly - jane pulled it out cautiously; she didn’t want to be caught ‘snooping’ by any of her peers.

That was it! Her red wool she had been searching for days, the only question left unanswered was why on earth would anna have it?

her quiery was soon resolved when she saw a metallic crochet hook accompanying the yarn.

The third queen knew that Cleves would be embarrassed if everyone knew she was crocheting, but seymour couldn’t help but smile. Jane texted her in hopes to subtly let her know jane was happy for anna to be crocheting.

“hey i found my wool in your room?? do you want me to teach you?”

“uhh haha sorry bout that, just looked kinda fun lmao please teach me it’s so hard ;-;”

“lol no problem lmk when you’re free i can help!!

just don’t take my stuff without asking next time!”

later that week, jane and anna went out to the craft store to pick up a few hooks of various sizes and some yarn.

Lillly - Bruce McCulloch

something about lillly gives off bruce girl energy and i can't even figure out why. something about the confidence and the vaguely pissed off energy that can be found in a few of his characters (the bride in the wedding toast sketches, the step class instructor, the fantasy sketch. also she's not nearly as oblivious as tammy but they are a similar genre of person). also bruce is the kid in the hall who's most likely to do some weird existential vaguely morbid sketch (especially in season 5) so i feel like he would vibe with how surreal lillly's act two gets

Hunter - Dave Foley

yes this is partially because that guy at my school who looks like dave foley auditioned for hunter once, but also dave could absolutely pull off the full range of hunter's character, from being the socially awkward guy who brings cue cards on a date to being the audience perspective character who's incredibly weirded out by everything going on (i.e. the chicken lady sketch) to being a genuinely nice guy who's just trying his best. i know it's weird to have dave foley, the cast member who's usually thought of as the best woman, playing the only male main character but you'll agree with this casting once you see the "get out of the car" scene (would genuinely kill to see that dialogue read by bruce and dave lmao)

Juno - Kevin McDonald

this one's a lot more straightforward: a lot of kevin's female characters have this kind of innocence to them that reminds me of juno, and juno also spends a lot of time going on panicked rants which gives ample opportunities for the Kevin Voice. also since dave is hunter the two of them get some great mini scenes together

Aubrey - Scott Thompson

when i first made this casting i was like "oh this is too obvious" but the more i think about it the more i'm like. what the fuck scott is literally aubrey. like you have this queer icon with multiple iconic costumes who is the lead singer of a band, and aubrey has the same kind of bold supportive energy, like this "egotistical but also uplifting" vibe that a lot of scott characters (cathy, buddy, maudre) have. literally the only thing missing is the purple hair

Iris - Mark McKinney

it's generally hard to explain iris as a character without spoilers so this isn't going to be as detailed as the others, but essentially what i can say is 1. mark and bruce are already one of the main duos and 2. aside from bruce, mark is also the one who's most likely to be involved with the dark/surreal sketches so i feel he would also vibe with iris in act two

This is like an opinion that will probably be very unpopular but I honestly would make the Snape/Lily thing requited on Lily's part, even a little bit. Currently, it's difficult to see even a friendship there, much less a devotion that transcends death and morality and magic. Like...just imagine if instead of Snape being the one to find her as children, it's Lily. She's a freak and doesn't belong and regularly does these supernatural things that she has no idea about and then she sees a boy her age mending his torn second-hand clothes with a wand. She immediately asks him how he's doing that and he tells her about magic, and she is *amazed*. She's not alone anymore. And he's the town weirdo too, another person who doesn't belong. Snape on the other hand is delighted to find another magical child around, who actually is interested in him and what he has to say.

I would also include instances showing their friendship, maybe Snape gifting a bracelet for her birthday, which she's still wearing at her death. Maybe he's hanging out with Narcissa since they are canonically very comfortable with each other, and Lily is just as appalled at that as Snape is about James Potter. Overall I just would have made their friendship more stronger and apparent, of two outsiders against the world, with a strong hint of something more ambiguous. I'm not saying make them Heathclifffe and Cathy, but...I mean it's right there with the Patronus. "Whatever souls are made of, his and mine are the same."

I'd also show more instances of some badass spy action. Show us why Dumbledore goes to such lengths to keep his cover. Show him warning the Order of DE raids after he switches sides. Show him surreptitiously getting rid of DEs on the side by puroposefully making them fuck up and get killed by Voldemort. Also, show him not fail at protecting Lupin lmao. Like, have him aim at the DE and succeed instead of cutting of George's ear. Nothing else changes. He's still a shitty teacher and malicious, but we also see him saving the world.

Oh, and also remove that whole scene with the photograph. Just so unnecessary and proves nothing; I find it completely antithetical to his arc and of his love becoming more selfless and an abstract guide to do good. It doesn't even really add anything to the books. The mystery of his relationship with Lily is still there regardless of it.

These small changes would have made it so much more stronger and added some consistency and logic to his story and arc imo. But idk, clearly something worked with the canon version, given that it's still such a hot topic so many years later.

i kinda understand. Metera kinda falls in this "try hard" to be horny that for me it doesn't work out. She does that mostly to have fun and not like, out of pure horny, and it can be fun as a result, but i don't really feel attracted to her either. (and i think i made it clear from raving about Miss Cathy that my problem isn't sexy women, it's just, how they're going about it)

And actually yeah i'm so upset about her boobs too. Like, in her original sprite she was sexy and everything but she did look like more "flat" than most of the women in the game, and i thought it was kinda interesting to have a woman being extremely sexy without relying on just giving her big boobs and leaving it at that. But then the more they went on with her arts the more they gave her and by the time of her summer units it's just, unrecognizable lmao.

I didn't read a lot of her stories, i've heard she's supposed to be a big sister, so perhaps her relationship with her sisters would eventually give me more insight on her. In the end i've only ever really seen it with her Holiday lines (bc one of my crewmate is HAUNTED by the way she sings Happy Birthday in a lewd way (and not the good kind of haunted) so a while back our crew made an app in which we all set up bday message for him, but all while Metera's bday voiceline plays in the back, and he was laughing so hard and touched while also cursing us, so now i just see Metera as a partner in crime), her quick appearance in Ferry Holiday's FE, and her appearance in the latest Lowain event. So to me it isn't enough to grasp most of her.

I'd say it's a bit difficult to compare her to Belial because ultimately, she is written to be fanservicy, in a very "male gaze" way. and Belial doesn't really come with this baggage, especially since his sexuality is more linked to characterization (and also an aspect of how you're supposed to be thrown off by it, though counting also on the people who would be turned on by it). (and just so we're clear I do think that some of the girl's sexuality can also be written as characterization over fanservice, imo this is the difference between Shalem and Fediel, who's sexuality is meant to be furthering their characters, and Hekate or Metera who has a much more fanservicy flare to it).

That said it's true that Belial is completely one of the kind, i don't really think most stories dare to go to these levels with their male characters, especially mobage. When you trace back the fan-reaction of most stuff gbf, for a long time, like a lot of gacha, the whole interest was mostly to keep the straight men's money. This is why for a long while we didn't have summer units for men. this is also why when they started to roll them it was only one a year, until they finally dared to do more later, compared to the amount of female summer units we get every year. I remember the turn about is supposed to have been Percival apparently, who, just after he joined the suptix pool, became the most suptixed character who brought them the most money at the time. And it was the turn around about how they realized they could actually do more to appeal to the male-attracted fanbase. Which is why he was the first Male Summer Unit also.

The thing is that it's really not usual for gacha like this to really bank a lot on what's considered to be the straight woman audience. Granblue has been the talk of a lot of mobage space for always being the "first" to really incorporate some male fanservice in their gacha where female fanservice is much more expected.

Belial probably wasn't expected to become the next step of that, but he really turned things around in a very unexpected way. Truly a man with a will on his own so much so that he changes the fanservice game all on his own. And i do think it may have cygames discuss what they can do to reproduce this success that has been bringing them even more money than any of the female fanservice stuff they've been releasing. Without the reaction to Belial i doubt we would have had anything like vday Wilnas for example.

anyway lots of ramblings but, yeah, Belial really is a beast of his own and really just, his sexuality kinda went off the rail in a sense which also makes it more raw and authentic. Metera is mostly just a safe fanservicy representation for example, but frankly i feel like the comparison doesn't even have much ground to exist due to the nature of how they came to be.
