Wally x reader "THEY TURNED ME DOWN (NOW LIVE MY NIGHTMARE)"

TW: HEAVY IMPLICATIONS OF CHILD NEGLECT

Inspired by the short film 'Opal' by Jack Stauber

Wally says this often, but today might be the most beautiful day he’s ever felt. How could it not be though? The sun is shining brightly bringing warmth to the neighbors with passing clouds to provide shelter to the neighbors when it gets too hot, complimented by the cooling spring breeze that passes by every so often. Indeed, this is another beautiful day in the neighborhood. Speaking of wonderful neighborhoods, Wally should probably check on you right now, after all, he did promise to teach you how to paint flowers with him today, and Wally would never dare break a promise to you. Wally took the fastest route to your house, though he would’ve liked it if you moved closer to the circle of neighborhood houses, but he also understands that you wanted your space from time to time, that’s just how you are and Wally finds it quite intriguing that you two felt the same way. Well, enough of that thought now, because Wally had just arrived at your front door.

Knock knock knock

“Neighbor? I’m here! Are you ready to start painting?” Wally left his art supplies back with Home, since you and him will be painting the flowers in Frank’s garden anyways, but he did bring you your own apron so you wouldn’t get paint all over your clothes, Wally is quite aware how beginners can get themselves stained with paint, and that’s great in Wally’s eyes, the sooner you make a mistake the sooner you can learn from them. Still, Wally wouldn’t want to get your clothes dirty, you make them yourself too and he wouldn’t want your hard work to get messy from this activity.

. . .

Silence.

Well, second time’s a charm.

“Neighbor? Are you there?” Wally knocks three times again. . .

Still no answer, and when he went to go for a third time. The door opened, with you peeking out of the small crack on the door.

Wally smiles when he sees you “Hi there neighbor.” But that smile dampens a little when he sees your frown and gray eyes.

“Why, darling are you okay?” Wally made it immediately known that he’s very very concerned, he never calls you by your pet name unless it’s an important circumstance, Wally wished he didn’t have to use it during a dire situation, but he wanted to offer you comfort. To let you know that he's there and everything's going to be okay.

"Oh, hey Wally. Sorry, I didn't manage to prepare in time for our painting lessons." Oh dear, even your voice sounded like it's drowning in rain.

Wally may have difficulty frowning, but he knows how to pull one off when he's really feeling down trotted. And right now, the corner of his lips went down to create a frown.

"Darling, is something bothering you?"

You gave a little laugh, but not because you found something funny "I guess I'm not really good at hiding this one huh? I suppose I ought to tell you. This day is coming whether I like it or not."

As if to show the full extent of your well-being. You finally stepped out of the house, leaving no door to block Wally from the full view of your face. And right away he could see tear stains painted down your cheeks. But before he could ask further about it, you produced a letter from your pocket. Then you proceeded to hand it over to Wally, and once you said who it's from it only made Wally more concerned for you.

"It's from my parents."

Wally looked up from the letter you gave to him. Your parents? You hardly ever talk about them, unlike Julie, who talks about her sisters endlessly. Any mention of your parents or any family members had you trying to change the topic with a hop, skip and a jump! Until everyone in the neighborhood understands that they'll never find out about your family. Until now that is, starting with telling Wally the truth. When Wally stayed silent, you took it as a chance to continue. You're going to do this whether you like it or not, right?

"I never really got along with them. My mother mostly spends her time in her room, drinking something that makes her dizzy. And my father looks at himself so much in the mirror that he barely notices when I'm there. And when he does notice, it's usually something about himself." You laughed your words off, but not because you find it funny and to be honest, Wally doesn't see any humor in it either.

"People turned them down, you know, now they lived their nightmares. . ." You repeated the sentiment your father would always say to describe himself and your mother. They just wanted to be seen by someone out there, wanted someone to take care of them. It just kills you inside that you couldn't be the daughter they needed in their time of needs. Instead of helping your parents, you ran away from them and hid in your room up in the attic. Hiding away from the knocking on your door. Until you finally had enough and chose to be a coward. Running away by escaping through your window and running as far away as possible. Anything to just get you away from that house and your parents. The people who had given you life.

. . . You really are a bad daughter.

You felt the wind knocked out of you when you felt someone tackle you wrapping their arms around you with a firm but gentle grip. Much akin to a loved one's hold to show their care and love. And when caught the familiar scent of apples, you knew that it could only be one person.

"Oh darling. . ." Wally gently said, never letting go of the hug. It's funny really, normally he'd have already gone limp, but he stood his ground instead and kept you in that hug "You're not a bad daughter, and your parents are to blame. Not you. It's not your fault that they are the way they are."

Then, tears threatened to fall from your eyes. You kept at bay for as long as you could, until it all came out in a choked sobs, you had said everything out loud and now Wally knows the disgusting truth about you and where you came from. 

"What do I do Wally? They're asking me to come back! But I don't want to go back! I want to stay here!" Your words came out wobbly and wet from tears and hiccups. Of course you knew it wasn't your fault that your parents are like that, but it's so damn hard when your parents make it sound like it's your problem too. And chide you and cry tears themselves until you accept that you were part of the problem. And for whatever reason, you believed them, because you had no one else to turn to for guidance in this thing called life.

"And you're not going back." Wally stated, pulling back a bit to land a small sweet peck to your forehead before pulling you back into the hug "You're staying here in the neighborhood, forever. . . Nothing will change that. I'll protect you, I promise okay darling?"

And as Wally's grip on the hug grew tighter but still very gentle, you find yourself believing in his words. Even if another part of you tells you to not be naive and vulnerable, the whole you would rather listen to Wally, the person who gave you what you had been searching for your whole life.

Wally repeated his promise again, sealing the deal one last time "I promise Darling. . . I will never let anything happen to you. . ."

And if Wally's face darkened at another glance at the letter from your parents, then that's for only him to know.

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

It’s hard to say because, and I say this with shame—I haven’t read the books in a long, long time. Off the top of my head though, I didn’t like that part in Ender’s Stocking where he became weirdly misogynistic. That was weird. I’m not and have never been a genius teen boy with a younger sister who got rejected by a girl at high school so I can’t say if the interplay between those specific factors would create that outcome—but I sure can say, I didn’t like it.

5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?

Ether Strike - Akira Complex. It’s hard to explain because it’s a rhythm game song (hello Arcaea fans) whose lyrics consists of like 4 unique lines but I’ll try. “An intense dissatisfaction with the world / And a compulsion to do something about it / Heaven and Earth / My guiding star” It is a compulsion, right? The way he decided he’d be the one to be in charge of it all. Fueled by a sense of desperation for any amount of validation and the guilt that came with. “My guiding star” reminds me of the conversation he had with Ender at the end of Shadow of the Giant where he said that he’d always think, what would Ender do? It helps that I hear a lot of grief, longing, and determination in the drop, too. Honorable mentions to All You Had To Do Was Stay by TS and Mirror Man by Jack Stauber.

18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?

Admire is a weirdly specific word in this context. There’s Bean, Petra, his parents, Graff, Achilles, Ender, Val whom I can see him having notable relationships with. Honestly, none of them are quite admirable? These relationships are interesting and complex and I like reading about them but I wouldn’t say that I look up to them for guidance on what to do with my own social life? The only exception is his relationship with Petra. He gave her space to grieve and a cushion to fall back on. He learned to love and they learned to trust.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

Dude, the first time I read Ender’s Game I was 12 years old. I don’t even remember how I felt towards the book overall. If I had to guess, I probably didn’t like him. At that stage in my life I would’ve related more to Ender. I do, however, remember the first time I picked EG up for a reread. I fell in love IMMEDIATELY. From the moment the book underlined his hatred with how he felt he wasn’t good enough, I knew he was THE standout character. The scene where he apologizes to Ender thinking that Ender’s asleep… HEARTWRENCHING. His heart-to-heart with Val… MY HEART BROKE. Meanwhile he was also so silly and goofy… literally the most crass character, always saying some wild out of pocket thing that made me go “hang on, we read this in sixth grade??!??” Now, with the part of the Enderverse that pertains to him completely in my pocket, it’s hard to pin down how I feel about him. From a personal perspective, he’s still by far my favorite character. His struggles and triumphs are vivid in a way that the other character’s just don’t live up to, and his failures are incredibly real. Viewing the books from a more critical view, Peter’s existence is interesting in and of itself because he occupies a lot of gray areas in the narrative. He’s a major antagonist in EG, and the only one that changes from an antagonist to a protagonist. He’s meant to be untrustworthy while being likable, making him rather unserious. In a narrative that usually frames characters as People We Should Listen To and People We Shouldn’t Listen To, Peter is the only character that we sorta kinda maybe should listen to depending on how much despair he’s experiencing. He’s explicitly allowed to make terribly embarrassing mistakes that threaten to debase his entire character, but he’s allowed to be helped. He’s allowed to crack jokes; the narrative is allowed to crack jokes about him. There’s an inherent levity to any scene he’s in. He can’t take the moral high ground in any argument—we’ve all seen him at his worst—yet he’s also working towards putting more good in the world. He’s a character filled to the brim with contradictions and even more determination to work through them. As a result, his viewpoints have a nebulous, fluid quality that made it impossible for OSC to use him as a personal megaphone, since, though the reader encouraged to challenge Peter’s assumptions, at the end of the day we’re still on Peter’s side—we want him to succeed, but we know that he WILL fumble doing it. He’s personable. And vivid. Which makes him a poor tool and a fabulous icon. A role that sort of echos his treatment in the novels themselves. Anyway. I think he’s neat.

Black board lyrics from ‘Angel’ by Jack Stauber

I really like the first novel I’m not finished reading the summary but I think the ideas it was laying out were really interesting especially with the angelic symbolism , the reoccurring theme of idolisation two face idolises the idol and when they die they start idolising es and close idolises two face if i’m remembering correctly closes brother idolises her as well , trying to prevent something only to become the cause two face thought himself the cause for the idols death so tried to not repeat the same mistake with es but he ended up being the cause of her death - close tried to stop the black board messages but ended becoming an accomplice instead , the use of separation from identity with the milgram names and the pen names before that and es scape goat symbolism!

I honestly find its cast and story to be interesting but frustrating that since their isn’t a translation I can’t understand it fully.

I couldn’t find a non-prison uniform reference for the characters so kinda just made it up…

explaining the art a little es is in the centre because two face made her centre of attention and theres what’s supposed to be the light if a projector because everyone projects their problems onto her same with the fingers their blaming her for there problems point and shifting the blame , the phones are because of how the bullies try and take photos of es and how she’s being filtered though a lens they don’t know her very well and can only see her though the tint of their preconceptions and the x are in chalk because with out the messages they won’t have been there. Es has a book as a reference to the books the prisoners have containing their memories , the books closed on lookers don’t care or see her experiences or feelings (the contents of the book) but also makes es seem like she was interrupted like she was just trying to read = live her life , also how shes the warden in the first novel (the little tassel is a reference to how some people draw our es? Idk what to call them non-novel es? Music es’s hat) theres a large black board behind obviously referencing the black board messages even though she’s not looking at it the onlookers are and its always present , two face and close are at different angles then the rest of the elements and don’t have their faces in view because of how they are both anonymous with the black board writing and not looking at es and how she’s struggling. The broken heart on the chalk board is because of how close betrayed es and a reference how es died breaking her head.

:D Hey Lex! Sorry I was a bit slow in answering this one haha- I actually listened to it not too long after you sent this in and was like "damn u right!!"-

I like this one cause I don't think listening to it I necessarily *would* have made the connection with this ship (I feel like they need a ship name smh...) but you're super right actually, it's very bittersweet, and touches on a lot of the struggles that Grant and Lark have in common. I also personally just tend to associate Jack Stauber's music with Grant a lot in general!

There's a lot of excellent lines here that could be matched with the ship but, standouts for me were:

Conner McKinley; 29

Conners is the team's demolition and mechanical guy. He's not a master, though he at least knows what he's doing. His role is typically on the sidelines, though he often calls himself and his explosions the "piece de la resistance" in missions.

He usually ends up setting up his finales with Trent playing security for him because he can't fight too well by himself. Most of the time Conners only goes in with his explosives and a handgun.

Conners actually enjoys his job. He views his destruction as an art form and he's getting great money for it. Though he's also the one that ends up declining missions the most. Call him a bit of a diva for that, but he's very firm that his pyrotechnics are never being used during political missions (under circumstances)

Background:

Out of most of the branch, Conners is the most politically active in the gang. Having actually been part of a few anarchy gangs before being recruited by O'Brien.

Conners is a very awkward mess, though one of the few ways he's managed to find some sense of self in his niche groups. His family doesn't know exactly what he does for work but they're happy he found something "helpful" to do.

His major scarring was due to a firebomb going off in his face while on a mission due to an accident in the hookup. Went off in his face and more would've been cooked if Conners wasn't wearing protective gear. Thus why he started wearing a SCBA on certain missions.

There’s so much I love about Jack Stauber’s Opal but one thing that hits really hard is the depiction of the father, and the way emotional abuse and neglect is portrayed. He’s got the most abstract design, being constantly surrounded by mirrors as a way of showing how he’s so insecure about how he looks and behaves that he’s become insanely self absorbed and can’t see anything other than himself. And as he talks to Claire he’s really just monologging while constantly tripping over his own words and projecting his insecurities onto her absolutely unprompted. You can also see the way he views himself as a savior, the way he pats himself on the back for taking time to talk to his daughter, the way the man he sees in the mirror looks much prettier than the real thing, the fact he says god is in his skin and he’s granting the world its next new savior. All while not letting Claire talk, all while spending the whole conversation invested in himself, all while doing nothing to stop the grandfather from harming her and even getting upset when she runs away, asking if she knows how it makes him feel. It’s too damn real

TW: MENTIONS OF DEATH AND SUICIDE

Dinner is Not Over is by far my favourite song by Jack Stauber. The overall theme appears to be straightforward in terms of the lyrics and music video. However, the sound of the music, combined with these elements, is what makes this song a work of art, imo.

The video, like many of Jack Stauber's visual masterpieces, is in an actual VHS filter. The claymation featured is surreal, and it features child-like yet morbid imagery throughout its duration.

This view of death is further explored with the song itself.

The full-length song begins with a cheerful melody that almost sounds like a child having fun with a toy keyboard. The music provokes a sense of nostalgia and, when combined with the high-pitched laughter from Jack Stauber, drives home the intentional child-like nature of the song.

But why are these dark lyrics sung with such a playful tune for the entirety of the song? Why does the music become temporarily chaotic near the end? And why do the lyrics shift from the repetitive reassurances from Jack Stauber to an obvious cry for help?

Most children don't know how to express these complicated feelings of entrapment nor of the feeling of wanting to escape. They know about friendship. They know about love. They might joke about cannibalism, and they might know about death. But they don't understand.

Therefore, "Dinner is Not Over" is directed at this "inner child" of the listener. After all, a child understands the inevitable wait with dinner and dessert, and for them, it feels like a wait that can last forever. They know how awful dinner can taste and how appealing dessert looks in comparison.

In addition, the lyrics, "'...cause at dessert: you can have it when dinner's done," followed by the siren-like sounds, represents the sheer panic, confusion and fear that the concept of death can provoke in the "inner child", despite the person themselves simultaneously craving it.

On the other hand, the adult/teen state of mind is later showcased when the background music abruptly changes near the end of the song. The music notes become loud, hectic, and frantic in sound, and Jack Stauber's singing is strained, emphasizing the desperation of the adult/teen state of mind.

The lyrics make it clear that they are suffering. They want to be separate from their wounded "inner child"; to have freedom from their mind they "can't get out of." They want to "see the light." But the people in their life are holding them back, supporting them until they seem "fine," even if they really aren't.

In the end, there is no clear-cut "things will get better", or "life is better than death", message to be seen here. The only message is that "living is something you do, for a time." Once again, this is spoken to the "inner child," judging by the return of the child-like voices and sound.

My takeaway? "Dinner is Not Over," says to your inner child, "Be Free." Let them experience life alongside you– even with their raw and painful emotions –so that you may also experience the same sense of wonder heard at the beginning, throughout, and end of the song.

explaining why i chose to make an animation for lloyd and harumi based on choice by jack stauber because it's my blog and i do whatever the fuck i want

first of all go read the lyrics if you haven't already, the song is 40 seconds it won't take you that long to read the lyrics

also go watch the storyboard/sketch i did for the animation im doing. this is half self promo and half for context lol

basically, i thought the song worked for these two. i was like "if i do this right, i can make the lyrics show the contrast between how lloyd and harumi are as characters and i think that's a really cool thing" so thats what i did. of course, i wouldn't be making this post if i didn't want to go more in depth so i'm gonna explain some frames from the sketch/storyboard.

(also, just as a note, the specifics of what parts of the show the frames are based on will be more clear when the animation is done, but i will be specifying them here)

first 4 frames:

these four are meant to drive home the contrast between lloyd and harumi; that being when it comes to harumi, lloyd, even up to crystalized, has feelings for her (the art for love is based on when he first saw harumi in season 8, the art for heart is based on when harumi betrayed him in the same season) and when it comes to lloyd, especially in season 8 after she's revealed to be the quiet one, harumi is very vengeance driven (the art for brain is loosely based on the whole thing in the oni temple in season 8, and the art for control is just something i came up with lol. the art for control is meant to give a sense of harumi not being entirely in her right mind and being driven more by vengeance than anything else, and not someone you'd be smart to trust either).

for the caffeinate and melatonin frames, i also tried to show contrast between lloyd and harumi. throughout the series, wu is shown to use tea to sort of relax in a similar way some might use coffee to. additionally, certain varieties of tea in ninjago have relaxing properties, so i sort of view it as "tea has a significant role in the life not just of lloyd, but also in the lives of everyone who visits the monastery" for a multitude of reasons. on the other hand, harumi resorts to murder to resolve her problems (murdering her parents and hutchins, attempting to murder lloyd, etc). hence, melatonin with blood splatters. melatonin is a sleep hormone and also has an effect on mood, so i thought "melatonin with blood splatters for harumi" lol

for this one i wanted to show a combination of harumi's manipulative tendancies and her genuine affection for lloyd as of crystalized (as it's implied that she has some genuine feelings for him; when ordered to kill lloyd, she tries to sway him to the overlord's side instead, something the overlord responds with "i see now that you still have feelings for him" to. she protects him and garmadon instead of fighting with the guy she sold her soul to. basically crystalized implies her feelings for lloyd were genuine but she was using them for manipulative purposes which is what this frame's art is meant to show). i thought "you get me going" worked for harumi's attitude towards lloyd prior to dragon form; that is, her goal from the minute her biological parents die to the minute the overlord reveals everything was by his design was to get revenge on lloyd and the other ninja.

tl;dr, this frame is meant to show the complexities of harumi as a character. did i succeed? we will not know until i finish the animation probably.

these two frames are just meant to be indicative of harumi's betrayal and the wake up call it was for lloyd so to speak. that's literally it, i thought it worked lol.

these two frames are based on the scene in crystalized where lloyd is trying to talk harumi out of hurting innocent people and essentially telling her she doesn't have to be how she is and they get into a back and forth about it. i feel like this part of the song ("i am injury" "no you aren't, you make the choice to be") is what had me in a chokehold when it came to wanting to make an animation featuring these two lmao.

and the final frame. this one is meant to be harumi coming to terms with everything she's done and basically realizing that she's been taking her anger and trauma out on the wrong people her entire life. it's one of the most powerful scenes in the show to me, and due to the nature of this animation i wanted to make it the last frame.
