Amber Skies Lore time while my computer reboots:
The civilization of New Babel is a democratic monarchy.
Power is transferred through familial relationships. However, due to the broad diversity of biologies under the Amber Sky, adoption is more common. If the monarch dies, their eldest child takes the throne.
The monarch acts as the head of state, but splits power 50/50 with Parliament. Parliament has 100 seats, but isn't necessarily made from the landed gentry.
See, every year at the end of summer, there is an event called the Festival of Roses. It's a huge goddamn to-do in New Babel. It's half harvest festival, half election day.
If you don't like a member of Parliament, you can challenge them to a duel for their title. There are multiple forms of challenge:
By Might (a nonlethal sparring match)
By Wit (Competitive poetry, essentially a rap battle)
By Wealth (Whoever throws the most baller party for the proles)
All challenges are judged by the proles, who make their votes by throwing roses onto either side of theater/arena. The challenged can get a champion to perform the challenge for you. Whoever holds the title at the end of the 7-day festival keeps the parliamentary seat.
Additionally, you can challenge the monarch for the crown, but you have to already own a seat in Parliament.
Part of the festival is that there are games and contests throughout the week where festival attendees can win additional roses. You gotta guard your roses really well, as if someone pickpockets it, it's considered fair game and part of the fun.

Being the faster of the two, the student went first, ducking under the little curtain. The teacher walked through the unblinking, the bits of metal clattering against her face. The student gave her an odd look, but received the same blank look. After a moment, the teacher pulled back her lipless face into a thin conciliatory smile. Under threat of further weirdness, the student elected to simply accept her new companions idiosyncrasies.

The Student and the Priestess from @normal-horoscopes amazing story Amber Skies. Their story makes me think so much about what constitutes a human or what is or isn’t natural, while wrapping it all in a cozy blanket of transhumanist body-horror.
I should probably make some more art of it, there’s so many wonderful creatures and characters that we’ve met since i’ve drawn these.

Half the time amber skies is all "there is no limit to what capitalism will destroy to conserve its hegemony, environmental collapse will only twist life into more brutal shapes, ideology makes weapons of children and children of weapons, and everything decays."
Half the time it's "Hee Hoo Power Armor"
