as someone whos been in and out of the kpop sphere for well over 10yrs and witnessed 2nd gen -> 3rd gen and now -> 4th gen i know of no other music genre w a history so organized(?) i think it def comes from the insanely fast turnover rate of kpop groups; the 7 year curse is very real and i would argue most groups legacy and peak can usually be distilled into a few years

for example girls generations peak influence was prob from 2009-2013 (gee, genie, hoot, oh, the boys, igab) although theyve had hits outside of that obviously 2009-2013 was still the most profitable w their tours and japanese and american debut and the members started mostly doing solo activities after 2015 notably taeyeon debuted with I in 2015 [so far gd and taeyeon are the most notable kpop soloists w longevity oh hyuna too but hyuna always felt more solo than 4minute or wonder girls]

for big bang i would argue it 2007-2012 (starting w lies, haru haru, tonight and alive eps) although its a bit harder to nail down w big bangs notoriously long hiatus and g-dragon (2008-2014 heartbreaker, one of a kind, coup d’etat) plus taeyang’s (2010-2014 i need a girl, wedding dress, eyes lips nose) solo careers following a different trajectory and peak (2014 mama) arguable that MADE (2015) was their real peak before enlistment and after long hiatus

exo (2013-2017), twice (2015-2020~), shinee (2008-2013), 2NE1 (2009-2014), bts (2015-2020~) [i personally think bts peaked musically between skool luv affair and wings]

you can do this w any group the point is kpops insanely high turnover rate and the industry’s obsession with young and fresh faces makes it so longevity/artistic growth arent as valued as something new (there are an insane amount of rising groups rn ask whos the 4th gen leader on twitter and there will be violence) and kpop idols go into their careers knowing its not sustainable and most will pivot to acting, modeling, going solo, or something else and very few reach any mainstream or critical acclaim as a soloist from a group (big bang’s individual solo work early in their definitely made them stand out among bgs of that era as shinee also all went solo rather successfully they did so after shinee’s peak popularity) i think bts used a similar strategy when giving each member a solo song in wings. there also is always the one person that become the face and most popular eventually synonymous (suzy in miss a, zico in block b, cha eunwoo in astro, wonyoung in ive, hyuna in 4minute) etc. with the group brand thats probably not the idea for the rest of the group but it profitable and kpop companies typically arent too invested in their artists going solo if they wont be successful (contracts are usually only last 7 yrs) [new kpop idols should thank jyj (former tvxq/dbsk) and their lawsuit for korea fair trade commission’s 7 year limit for entertainment contracts; kris luhan tao also continued the sm tradition of sueing for worker’s rights] anyways idk what my point is here ive just been in the kpop meta for too long i feel old and wise but the message to all kpop fans esp new ones… its all capitalism <3 i know some groups self produce or wtv but its all for profit think about why youre buying 6 versions of the same album when you dont even have a cd player and if thats you than more power to you buying things is fun just remember kpop is not that deep bc its run by corporate overlords i’ll leave this with some potentially obscure older recs: a fool of tears - big bang, black hole - shinee, express 999 - girls’ generation, signal - f(x), dont flirt - winner [yg’s who is next was emotional damage produce101 before p101] , change - hyuna, mental breaker - block b (underrated rap line park kyung zico p.o. also from a meta sense bts and block b are very similar bts got a lot more success prob due to smart musical choices and marketing and a little luck

It's occured to me lately all the ways on which my adhd really has inhibited my ability to draw, and i just wanted to write it all out in a bulletpoint format and go through them to see if i can't find a solution to some of them.

Boredom - i get bored doing the same thing for too long and will rarely finish something if it takes me more than a week to finish.

Computer runs on 4GB - My computer is, sadly, shit. Which means a lot if waiting and hassling to save files on external hard drives.

External validation - not unique to adhd but i've been told we react much more strongly to other people's opinions of us, which sounds about right. So if i don't feel other people enjoy what i make, or even one person doesn't, whose opinion i value, i lose motivation.

Going outside - drawing from life is something i enjoy but it's very hard for me to do, which has led to me feeling very stuck in a single mindset for a very long time even though i would like to get inspiration from other sources. The insp bank is just very empty.

Starting and stopping - it's just such a hassle to navigate hyperfocus. To an extent i know how to trigger it, work with it, make the most of it, etc. But it still just takes a Lot of energy to manage.

Back pain - having a hard time exercising and stretching regularly has made it so my back pain is stopping me from drawing even if i want to.

Too tired all the time - everything is much more exausting when u have adhd so even if i wanted to work on åersonal projects or whatever, the physical and emotional toll is just too high.

Probably not an exaustice list lbr but at leadt i have it.

So a few things are more existential in nature like: "what do i want to spend my limited time on this earth making?" "Why do i feel like what i am doing is not enough?" Etc. Etc. And probably can't be solved in one sitting.

A couple things can rly be aided by a better settup though so once i move in i'm going to need to start thinking about a better settup:

A better computer with a RAM that doesn't actively want me dead.

(And good screen placement to go w that, so im not actively murdering my neck).

(And a new tablet that's not 10yrs old and a safety hazard).

Established places for all my tools so i can work with minimal effort.

Smaller usb sticks labeled by year would be nice. Computer folders drive me mad.

An inspiration board (and planning board) would be nice. Being able to visually see all my projects in action at all times. Worth a try honestly.

Moving in and settling down will aid on a few fronts:

Generally not being constantly worried about moving in to a new appartment will be swell. Love that for future me.

Exercise will happen more regularly once i move in and am not constantly stressed. Also i'll live rly close to a gym so.. fingers crossed that solves That problem.

Going back to work will help with that.

Genuinely no solution for the Too Tired problem. I'll likely just have to let myself rest once in a while even if it means giving up on exercise and drawing for a week or more at a time. Which is probably healthy lbr.

Which.. that leaves the three biggest issues (shocker).

Going outside would help with boredom but going outside is hard.

I think i'll have to invest in some better outdoorsy bags. Like those rly cool leather hip pouches. Those would be great. Just.. a way to easily carry equipment qith me so i can just draw when i feel like it and don't have to dig around a bag just find a pencil.

Like this lol. Big enough to fit an a5 sketch book bc that's my preffered size snd like.. one water colour set and a pen. Imagine that. I think that would be Swell. I don't need a bunch. Just enough that i can carry the essentials anywhere i go.

The dream.

Another reason to marry a leather worker.

And honestly like.. i think taking a break from fanart and social media and just going outside to draw and see the world.

I think that's what i need rn.

Then there's the issue of external validation, which isn't anyone's fault, it just kinda Is.

I figure quitting social media can help with that too. Sorry to say.

The rest is probably just processing what i want to do and stuff. Ya kno. The existential bits.

Still tired

Yesterday wasn't real eventful, none of my days really are. I wrote a letter, conversed with my mother, and went over my books outline while my daughter was at work.

The plan was to run to a store we'd went to the day before and return a tea cup and saucer I had purchased. I think I've mentioned before that I like old fashioned things...to a point. So when I limited my coffee intake and replaced it with tea I found my tea pot and kept an eye open for a cup and saucer that would match it. I bought the pot approx. 30 yrs ago and it didn't come with cups. Mug for coffee and tea cup with saucer for tea.

While I'm waiting for my daughter to finish her work as a big bunny for a children's Easter party thrown by the area library I made sure to do what was needed to keep my migraine to a minimum while the dogs, one in particular, talked to me constantly.

I made a concession about getting a dog, or two, after our three Shelties passed. They were siblings so 1 passed at 10yrs old and the other 2 at age 12. I liked their size but my daughter wanted a Husky. In case you don't know anything about Husky's they can be noisy dogs. They talk (different than a bark), scream similar to a Shiba Inu, and lead any drama class with full marks. Plus they shed like a busy hair salon.

After some research I said ok to a Pomsky. Half Pomeranian and half Husky that are classified as a designer dog. I didn't find the 'designer' part till after we obtained the first one. I'll try and post a pic of each later, I'm really tired today, but one is black and white like what a typical Husky would look like and called Yasha. Yasha means deamon in Japanese and his markings live up to the name in looks. Other is blonde with light blue eyes and called Natsu. Summer in Japanese because his eyes are the color of a summer sky.

Yasha looks physically more pom and is snarky and loves to talk and stomp is paws. He huffs while whipping his head around in disgust or throws a hissy fit when he doesn't get his way. He could win an Oscar for drama. We brought him home at 14 wks. old and he was basically feral. He likes us and will be snuggled and coddled but not outsiders. They are the "don't touch me" people. Bigger dogs are ok but if they try to pick a fight he goes straight for the throat. Same with ground hogs.

Natsu is more like a Husky physically and came from a good home at 14wks old, too. He loves people, kids he's standoffish but they move fast at him so...if they stand still he'll love them. This one howls at sirens and screams when he thinks it's time to go. Dog park? Scream to leave house then again to leave park when he or his brother are tired.

Both breeds are energetic so combined they still have energy and smarts in abundance. So they go for walks and to the dog park periodically. They also have a very large yard to run and play in. Trust me, they want for nothing. However, if they don't get to go someplace outside this property they get difficult. More difficult than normal.

After the stop at the shop I thought we'd take them for a walk along the river. It was in the 20's, we're having a second winter here in Michigan, and very windy but they went with my daughter for a total of about a mile. Yasha is 20lbs and has short legs and tires the fastest. Natsu is almost 30lbs but doesn't fight stopping when his brother is tired.

I personally only went 1/4 mile and then back. I go slow and just watched them speed walk along with boardwalk. I thought of pushing it and joining them but decided the after affects aren't worth it. So, instead of being a blob on the couch today because I hurt to much to move I have written 2 letters, meditated, straightened house a bit, prepped supper, and started cleaning my room while the pups napped on my bed.

That is huge for me considering I'm running a fever again and exhausted.

Sonally Celebration Week, Year 3, Day Four!

Another day of Sonsally Week, unlike the last few entries, this is where I break linearity and go travel back to a prior period in the timeline. When the prompt of ‘Power’ was shown my mind of course went to the Super-Forms, the Deep Power Stones, and the like. Yet also my mind went back to some fanart from last year about a certain someone I would have loved to have seen share a Super Form with Sonic… Y’all can see where this is going.~

Forward: Timeline wise, this is 9-10yrs before Crossroads; the last battle of the war with Dr. Eggman. I admit I’m once again sprinkling tidbits from my still WIP Archie-Sonic-Verse that has yet to be published, but I think the easter eggs and hints of things yet to be seen will be fun for the reader.

Power:

“Sal, are you flipping insane?!” Cried Sonic as he stared Sally down at her suggestion. “You want to use the Deep Power Stones to amplify our Super Forms? What about all that ‘overload potential’ nonsense?!”

Standing beside Sonic, one eye on the half of the Deep Power Stone in her hand, the other on the approaching Egg Armada. A legion of robots, ships, and what other mechanical horrors Eggman had left to try and quash them all for good. With the world-wide alliances winning victory, after victory, Eggman grew desperate and now was throwing everything he had at them in a ‘If I can’t have it no one will!’ tantrum of a scorched world move. Basically it was done to the wire, and now they were as desperate as Eggman.

Her grip tightened on the stone, that madman would not have the last laugh. He wouldn’t end their world as he did the Mobius he came from! “It’s something I was thinking about for awhile, Sonic. We’ve seen what the stones can do just augmenting the individuals who bring the stones together. If we bring that kind of augmentation to the Super Forms? We have the Master Emerald already channeling to empower the Seven Chaos Emeralds, imagine channeling the Stones through it to the Emeralds and the Power Rings. All of you could not just have a greater power boost, but potentially the forms will last longer, long enough to wreck most if not all of the Egg Armada and put an end to this war for good!”

“It might work…” Murmured Tails, standing on the other side to Sally. “Channeling the Stones' power through the Master Emerald, which itself is a beacon and conduit for the Seven Servers…” He began to murmur as his brain went over the numbers and possible calculations. As the two-tailed fox finished his thoughts, he turned to the Guardian of Angel Island, wanting his thoughts. “The Master Emerald is your expertise Knuckles, you think it will work?”

The red-furred Guardian furrowed his brow as he contemplated this. “Maybe, I admit while my communion with Tikal or my Great Grandfather has given me greater insight to the mystical aspects of the Master Emerald, I’m still a novice truth be told.” He sighed, looking apologetic. “Sadly I know more of the scientific side of things given the Brotherhood’s data mostly focuses around that. Even my Father’s old notes are more historical musings than proven theory.” He sighed again, mentally cursing his forebears for yet another aspect of oversight the Brotherhood neglected during their long tenure of guarding Angel Island. Then again, save for the Lost Tribe, it would seem most of the old mystic arts were lost to the Echidna of today, what few were left. “Given we’ve found many connections to the old mystical artifacts of the world, there’s a good chance they’ll work together as Sally thinks.”

A low growl-like ‘hmm’ punctuated the air, before a stern voice interjected aloud. “Or it will overload the Emerald, destroy it, and fry all of us, or potentially create a super-bomb.” Shadow stated with arms crossed, and looking pensive. As all looked his way, he spoke on. “I’m not saying we ditch the idea, but it’s something to consider. I have a vow to protect this world to uphold, as well as too many I care about to let them die.” His thoughts dwelled on Rouge, Omega, and Hope especially. His other comrades within G.U.N. and the Thorndyke Labs. Even of those here, despite any past animosity, he wanted them and their loved ones to equally live. They all had family, and friends to protect. 

The last member of the group, his expression uneasy, yet a deep resolve in his eyes looked about his comrades, and then the horizon as their enemy continued to fly toward them. “We don’t really have a choice do we? This is the last chance, for all of you, as well as the Future I want to prevent from coming to pass.” Clenching his fists, Silver felt his powers hum through his being. It had been a long journey, and one not without many hurdles. From his bungling to interpret data from then Future, and its founding in the past, to dealing with the truths of his own ‘Master’ and the struggle of wondering if he was truly a pawn to bring about ‘his’ world versus a world for everyone to be happy. In the end he was wiser, more experienced and ever resolute to ensure the dark future never came to pass. All other obstacles save Eggman had been dealt with. This was the final hour. “So, save for Sonic we’re all in agreement?”

Hands on his hips, Sonic frowned deeply, looking rather indignant. “Hey, hey! I never said scrap the plan, I was just pointing out how before everyone kept yammering about doing something stupid with the Stones. Given either configuration usage done wrong could lead to KAB-BOOM! Jus’ pointing that out!” Eyeing everyone, his gaze rested on Sally, those deep blue pools that always sucked him in. Reaching for her hand, he wrapped his hand over hers, their wedding rings shining in the sun together. “You think this is our best bet, Sal? If you’re really onboard, so’m I.”

In truth, Sally did share the same concerns as Sonic and everyone else. She knew even using just the ‘boost’ augment which so far had been the safest, could lead to disaster as much as the other configuration which always ended destructively. Plus this would be the last time they could use them. As per Merlin Prower’s warning, the Deep Power Stones could be used a handful of times, and the mystic had given them warning they were on their last usage. This was due to a special magical limiter the Neo-Walkers put on the Stones, halving their ability so the Freedom Fighters and their allies could have an edge. However with the last use, the limiter was off, and so it was full power, and potentially the best opportunity for the worst case scenario. After this the Stones would vanish for another millennia until they were recharged and reappear randomly about the planet again.

Yet as Silver pointed out, what choice did they really have? Eggman was going all out; and thus, their hands were tied. “It’s the best shot we have. G.U.N.’s mechanized forces are exhausted and what isn’t in the repair bay is out fighting the forces encroaching their borders. None of the rest of the allied nations have any armies big enough to fight this horde. We can’t call for help from Blaze or any other friends from other dimensions because the Zone Cops sealed all dimension travel to Mobius Prime to prevent Eggman from escaping. This, this, is all we can do.” Her resolve sounded unshakable, despite her internal doubt, she had to sound resolute. Matching her gaze with Sonic, she managed a grin as she laced her fingers with his. “Let’s do-it-to-it, gang!”

Smiles formed about at the catch-phrase that was so infectious even Shadow was sucked in. One by one, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow and Silver joined in placing their hands over each other, forming a lock. “Let’s do-it-to-it! They all cried, before breaking to get into place. While Sally stood by the Master Emerald with Knuckles, the others began to loop around the Master Emerald, each linking their hands together. From Shadow to Silver, to Tails, to Sonic. Instead of holding Knuckles’ hand, Sonic placed his own on the Echidna’s shoulder. Knuckles did the same with Sally, while his free hand touched the Master Emerald. Sally held the Deep Power Stones in each hand, waiting for the right moment to place them together. Craning her head to Knuckles she nodded, and he nodded back, his gaze shifting to the large emerald his bloodline made their mission to protect along with Angel Island itself (well Echidna population for them, Knuckles was out to protect everyone).

“The servers are the Seven Chaos… Chaos is power, enriched by the heart… The controller exists to unify the chaos!” As he started the chant, he briefly saw a flash of Tikal within the Master Emerald, smiling at them all. This allowed Knuckles to smile, but he didn’t let this distract him. “We who are blessed by the Chaos, beseech to wield your power and wisdom, to save the planet and the innocent lives that dwell upon it. Let us be the Guardians of Mobius, of the Chaos, and the Light of Gaia!”

“We will gladly give our lives if you can let us protect all we love, please help us.” Murmured Sally, interjecting her own addition once Knuckles’ incantation chant was finished. Staring at the two halves of the stones, Sally placed them together, the halves flashed as they became one. An intense glow emanating from the black object that soon blinded them all. A bright, green glow from the Master Emerald broke through the white, with the gathered Power Rings (including Sonic’s Billionth Special Ring) all giving off a golden glow as the colors mingled together. A pillar of the mingled colors erupts from the Master Emerald’s resting place, shooting up, and up into space as the island is bathed in its warm glow.

Tails was the first to regain his sight, and once the relief they did not explode passed through him, a wide grin formed on his face as he felt it, the power of his Super Form. Not only that but he could ‘feel’ the power was increased. “Alright I think it worked!” He hollered, pumping his arms as he felt the power of Turbo Tails peak and flare briefly. “Hooo it’s been a long spell!”

Shadow merely made a ‘heh’ sound, yet smiled as he stared at his own glowing hands. “Yes, I can feel it, now those machines can feel Super Shadow’s fists and Chaos Spears.”

“This still blows me away with how powerful it makes me feel.” Murmured Silver as he marveled at his Super Silver transformation.

“Oh holy crap…” They heard Knuckles utter, followed by Sonic stammering “S-S-Sal?”. Everyone turned their heads and gasped in awe.

“Oh, my God…” Was all Sally could murmur. Her fur was a pink-orange tinge, and her hair a golden glow, flowing freely from the sheer power itself. “H-how? I thought only those with a tie to the Chaos Force could achieve super form?!”

“Maybe the powers that be felt you were worthy.” Knuckles mused, giving a nodding approval to this development. The light-pink glow of his Hyper Knuckles form, arcing with energy like everyone else. “In any case it looks like it worked.”

“I’m not a fan of the colors, they remind me of when I spent hours scrubbing chemicals out of my fur.” Muttered Sally, recalling the chemical splash that caused her fur and hair to change colors twice, before finally returning to her proper brown and auburn tones. She shuddered at the memory; she was lucky Rotor and Quack were able to make a fur-shampoo solution to cleanse the stuff from her fur, and luckier she wasn’t exposed long enough to cause any health issues.

Rubbing his chin, Sonic flashed a wide smile as he drew in his wife’s Super Form. “I dunno Sal, you rock the colors, and do’. It’s giving me ideas-.”

Tails held up one hand, and the other he put a finger to his mouth. Making a faux-gagging sound. “Sonic, I’m right here, don’t wanna hear that stuff!”

Snorting, Sonic rolled his eyes, “Hey, hey Li’Bro who said my mind was going to the gutter?”

Knuckles shot Sonic an incredulous look. “And I quote, “I’m always horny for Sal.”, end quote.”

Both Sonic and Sally managed to blush through the color of their super forms. Each coughing, and averting their gazes from their friends for a time.

“How about we can the small talk, and focus on saving the world?” Shadow stated, breaking up the moment as he turned and pointed towards the approaching Armada. “I’m sure Eggman saw that light show and is going to get even more antsy to try and finish us off.”

Clearing her throat, Sally stepped forward from the Master Emerald, letting Shadow’s comment further help to put that momentary embarrassment behind them. FAR behind them hopefully! “Shadow’s right, we got the power, now let’s use it.”

Pounding his fists together, Sonic began to jog and jump in place to pump himself up. “Juice and jam time folks, let’s show ol’ Eggy he should’ve stayed on that satellite in his home dimension.”

“If not just shriveled up and died.” Growled Knuckles as he flexed his fists before slamming them together.

“For everyone here, and those yet to come, we must win.” Silver uttered as he began to float, flexing his psychokinetic powers in anticipation.

Spinning his twin-tails, Tails began to hover as well. “Sally, give the word, we’re ready!”

“Everyone, it’s been an honor… LET’S GO!!”

Pokemon Boring and Locked

Pokemon Sword and Shield really does look like a crushing disappointment. Region locked gym leaders? Not a fun idea. Gigamaxing?? We just got used to megas and their exclusion is now a sign of region locked battle mechanics. No one enjoys region locks why are there so many?? The games really aren't pushing the limit or advertising awesome endgame. Or any endgame. The games are $90 a pop now and there's no regional travel/hard mode zone/mystery quest along the lines of ultra beasts but better/pokemon walking?? When will we get a villian with a real arc?? The last one was N in bw? Sword and Shield looks like a waste of great character and creature design at this point. If I were a younger player I'd be extra mad because the ghost gym leader looks ✓✓✓ and the boring fighting gym leader would have been an unpleasant suprise for me if I picked sword. Am I making sense. Idk pokemon has a trillion dollars and should do better for the young trainers out there. I still want sheild but the playtime is so short now. My point is 10yr old players should not be finishing the game in a week and I shouldn't be finished by the afternoon of release.

The NTV “docudrama” about Yuzuru and Brian unexpectedly had some good content that made me really emotional (if you just...well...skip the acting. except for that ‘hi’ asflkj that was lowkey on point AF). This Olympics was truly...sigh. Truly a miracle. Thank you yuzu and everyone around him. I’m just...so glad we’re living in this reality.

Brian: Yuzuru, you have 3mths until the Olympics. What do you want to do?

Yuzuru: I want to win at the Olympics. I absolutely want to repeat as champion.

Brian: That’s okay. We have time.

With that, Yuzuru began his training.

2mths until the Olympics: (footage of Kobayashi reading out Yuzuru’s statement about the state of his ankle and how he’s doing his best with treatment and rehabilitation)

Narrator: In truth, due to inflammation in his tendon and bones, the situation had worsened. They had expected to resume training on the ice 1mth from the injury but Yuzuru had not been able to even stand on the rink.

Brian: Yuzuru spent a lot of time on his own and I expect he had a lot of doubt and worry about whether he could make the Olympics on time. But he transformed all those ‘minuses’ into ‘pluses’.

There were 3 things Yuzuru did to achieve this

1. Studying anatomy. In order to more deeply understand his own injury, Yuzuru studied the structure of bone and muscles. While intently listening to his own body, he patiently proceeded with training according to the plan.

2. Yuzuru watched a lot of videos and did image training to exercise the brain (footage of Yuzuru watching his old videos and checking his form in front of the mirror - says he basically watches footage of his successful jumps and tries to imitate the timing etc.)

1 month until Olympics, at the ceremony for the athletes confirmed to be going, Hanyu did not appear but did send a comment to those supporting him.

2mths after the injury, Yuzuru finally returned to the ice. However, he once again felt pain and couldn’t proceed with his training.

According to Noguchi Yoshie (who covered Hanyu’s injury and has apparently been covering Hanyu since 10yrs ago?): “If he’s jumping with pain every time, it will unconsciously take over. Whether it’s knees or calves, somewhere will hurt. According to what Hanyu-senshuu said, they didn’t know the cause. Every single day, he was searching for what the injury was, repeatedly.

2wks until the Olympics: Brian and Yuzuru had their final practice alone in Toronto.

Brian: There was very little time but I thought it may be possible to bring him into peak condition.  

5 days until the Mens SP: footage of Yuzuru arriving at the airport and his words there – here lies the third behaviour that allowed him to change his injury into a ‘plus’ (strength).

3. Yuzuru analysed his own words in previous press conferences where he had done well.

Noguchi-san: ‘In these competitions with these feelings I said these things’ and ‘in this mental state, I was able to win’, he reviewed them all.

In the post victory interview with Ueda, Ueda asked if Yuzu’s statements of ‘I want to win’ were about inspiring him. Yuzu said it was more about feeling like he had to decide or lock in the future or it wouldn’t work and it was a form of mental control.

Brian: He had taken painkillers but the pain had not disappeared. However, he absolutely didn’t allow anyone to see the pain he was in.

Brian: Good question. It may be that Yuzuru needs adversity. Through overcoming difficulties, he continues to grow. Yuzuru is the genuine world champion.*

Yuzuru: It’s really fun to do difficult things. Ultimately, I’m happy when I can do difficult things and get a great sense of fulfilment. It’s truly incredible to not have limits.

*He basically means ‘the real deal’ or like...the ‘true’ world champion in relation to being able to live up to the name.

*Smiles softly* I see heh! I definetly enjoy Disturbed Songs at Times, they were like one of the Best Rock Bands of the 2000s in my honest Opinion! I know they still do Songs these Days, but doesn't seem to be as Popular like back in the Day. I absolutely would like seeing you do Covers of Perfect Insanity as Example from their 2000s Songs yeah! ^_^

I got into Disturbed quite late (I actually got into music and metal relatively late tbh) but yeah their older stuff was great. Unfortunately their newer stuff suffers from a lot of problems, such as lame rehashing of their old sounds, lacking their old aggression, and trying too hard to be too smart IMO. Compare the mindless punchy aggro of The Sickness album to the garbage attempts at thinking in the Asylum album and beyond - trying too hard to send social messages instead of making the hard hitting music they used to. If I wanna listen to songs about global warming or whatever, I’ll hit up Midnight Oil, know what I mean? And there’s been a change in the music to match, can’t quite put my finger on it, but it’s boring to listen to, boring to sing, I can’t get into it.

As for which songs to cover, that’s gonna be limited to what backing tracks I can find - I already have a collection but it’s mainly from the first album. I may also still prioritise the songs I did 10yrs ago first, so we can get that comparison, but after that, I guess we’ll see! :)

Andy is nb they are 22!! they are at a magic school it’s rly small there’s only one, sometimes two teachers, so there’s 11 kids total & andy is the eldest so they play a game called “try to study hard for ur graduation final exam while entertaining ur little magic siblings”. lmao but really there’s a game a lot like hopscotch that’s like. trapped? the squares are big like three yards on each side & each square is like,,,the floor is lava, or water, or dodge traps etc. it was built as like a training tool for guardians but then kids are like cool that seems like fun. Trump’s Tax Bill- Corporate 3 Card Monty?

I needed a moment to wrap my head around (Not very Presidential) Trump’s GOP approved Tax Bill. First, I had to get over the way GOP Senate members scrambled, like roaches in the dark to pass their version of the bill. I thought that this must be how Americans felt when a small group of Senators met around this time in 1913, to pass the Federal Reserve Act.

Next, was the way GOP Members touted this Bill as ‘Tax Relief for The Middle Class’ in general, but it specifically brings Permanent Tax Relief to Corporations. President Obama tried to reduce the Corporate Tax Rate down to 28%, but could not get approval. Trump, has some how gotten approval for 21%. In true Trump fashion, GOP Members of Congress gathered with the ‘Dictator In Chief’ on the White House’s South Lawn, to take a victory lap & 'Kiss the Ring’. However, Everyone is mum about the $500B- $1.5T this Bill will cost over 10yrs.

Speaker Paul Ryan is slow to tell us how We will pay for this Bill, but is quick to explain why it is necessary for Corporations to have a Permanent Tax Cut. Republicans in general cite 'Corporate Forecasting’ as the main reason- explaining how Corporate Entities need 10 Yrs advanced notice to speculate Future Earnings.

My question to GOP Congress Members is: What about American Citizens? Why are Corporations given preferential treatment over People? The notion of “Trickle Down Economics” is laughable, especially when several Corporate CEOs admitted They would spend the recouped funds on Corporate Buybacks & Executive Salaries. Even Bill supporters, like Sen. Marco Rubio doubt Corporate seeding will reap meaningful gains for employees.

Recent Employee Bonuses offered as a Corporate 'Show of Good Faith’, have already fallen flat. When you consider that a (Corporate) Employee Bonus Package carries a tax deduction; If you’re like me, you may ask:

Many of these Corporations have held surpluses for years. Knowing how this will spur Economic Growth, why did They wait until This Year to give back?

My argument for Republican Members of Congress is: If it makes sense to grant Corporations 10 Yrs to forecast earnings, why not offer American Citizens the same leeway? I’m sure that there are families in every State that would benefit from having the ability to plan ahead for Children, Mortgage payments, College tuitions, Retirement, & ElderCare.

Why are Corporate Rates permanent? Why didn’t Republicans at the very least, present a 10 Yr. Plan that gives both Taxpayers & Corporations time to forecast their respective budgets? We have been fed a lot of rhetoric over the years, about why Corporate Entities should be considered Individuals. That is a two way street.

Corporate 'Individuality’ has led to a flip flop in the distribution of Taxes over the decades. The American Citizen is being robbed of Their Assets & Resources, while Executive Salaries & Dividends rise. This new Tax Bill amplifies Corporate America (a Multinational Body)’s looting of the Rights, Privileges, & Dreams of Everyday People.

The short-term gains that 'Average Americans’ receive on the front end of the Bill, are overshadowed by the losses expected on the back end; by way of (gradual) limitations on State, Property, & Individual deductions. Elimination of ACA’s Individual Mandate will most likely lead to fewer enrollments & increased premiums.

Like, my palm had some dots on it’s leaves and I did like.. everything to fix that! And it’s doing fine!!! :D I’m really happy. it still has those dots because it’s like a chronical disease now that you can’t get rid of, but the dots are small and limited not as big as before.

This is what I did: put it in another place because it might’ve gotten too much wind at my window. I got it out of the pot and removed some roots that looked like they’d be rotting luckily there werent many) and I also cut away many leaves with dots.  It looked a bit sparse afterwards but now it’s wonderful and full again and aaahhh :D

Now I worry about my old ass cactus because it’s not really growing (well... if the sun comes around the corner I block it bc of the heat...) but I don’t think that thats a problem. Anyways, I thought I might put it between window and curtain for a day and whoops now it has some black dots around it’s thorns.  I think.. it had some of those before but really small and now they are bigger but I don’t think they grow? At least not very fast so I hope it’ll go away. Maybe it had them for some time and I only noticed now? The cactus is so old it would be a shame to loose it ._. it went through 2 pots already and has it’s 3rd now because it became so big.

The Future Is Now | An Interview With Zilla Rocca

Philadelphia is rich with hip-hop history going back to Spoonie-G, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, The Square Roots (The Roots) on through Freeway, Beanie Sigel, Dice Raw, Lushlife and of course the Wrecking Crew’s own double threat Zilla Rocca. With more than 15+ years deep in the game Rocca is approaching the release of his latest and in this writer's humble opinion most impressive album yet via legendary music journalist Jeff Weiss’s POW Recordings with, Future Former Rapper set to drop in the coming months. 

I reached out to the Wrecking Crew, Career Crook, Grift Company Producer/Lyricist to talk about his career, parenthood, how his approach has changed and all sorts of shit in between. Over the course of the conversation I digested the new album and the more I listened to it the more one thing became clear to me...Zilla Rocca is one of the NICEST FUCKING MC’s THIS CULTURE CURRENTLY HAS AROUND! The man has not only studied the greats but he holds tight in his essence the core of what made many of them great to begin with and when you get your hands on this album you will see what I mean.

Damn That Noise:  "Future Former Rapper" you said has taken around 4yrs to create, and in that time you dropped 3 Career Crooks projects, your joint EP with Curly Castro as Grift Company and your "Hard Boiled EP" not to mention becoming a father and husband, and writing for Passion of The Weiss. What was it about this specific album that you really wanted to take your time on, and where do you think you've matured and refined yourself as an artist and man since "No Vacation for Murderers" dropped?

Zilla Rocca:  That’s a great question. All of heady stuff takes me 1-4 years to make for some reason. This album went through a lot of incarnations even though the songs are pretty direct and the conceptual stuff is digestible. When I started making it I decided to record maybe 4-5 songs, play them live, see how people reacted, and then go back and re-record them after doing field research. I’ve never done that before and it was great! Plus as an emcee it helps you catch pockets with the rhymes in a live setting that you might now catch in the booth. 

I think after No Vacation specially I wanted to make more straight forward stuff. I feel like my Shadowboxers projects are ahead of their time and take a minute to digest. Once real life stuff intersected then I really had no time just to experiment and meander with songs. I wanted to get my point across on different types of production on some Danny Brown and Vince Staples steez since they challenge people while being bare bones rappers. The bulk of the album was done before my son was born and his first year I had to pause with all music stuff and just be a Dad and husband. So that year off helped me recharge to do new stuff like Career Crooks and Grift Company.

DTN: I had written about your really growing into an MC who belongs alongside the caliber of folks who came from the DITC era, and you had replied in a tweet saying that you had really been studying those guys for a while recently. What is it about Finesse, Diamnond D, Big L, OC and the rest of the Digging in The Crates crew that inspires your asthetic? You sound like you and not a knock-off, but the essence is there which is hard to do some times....how do you incorporate those inspirations into the process?

Zilla Rocca:  Just being mentioned anywhere near DITC is a blessing so thank you. I feel like DITC is still an all time great secret in rap. I love Wu and Mobb Deep and all the other big groups and cliques but everyone knows them. How many people who love Fat Joe know DITC? I think those guys are incredibly consistent first off which I admire. AG is still great! Showbiz still gets busy. As does OC and everyone else. And their sound has always fluctuated between dark and cinematic but also shiny and bouncy. They could do clubby joints for the car and do headphone cypher riding on the train beats. I’ve been making beats for 15 years and definitely studied their approaches. I told Small Pro that “Good Luck with That” is his Buckwild album. And as a rapper I love Finesse and Diamond D for being so in pocket and dead on with their lines. There’s a beauty to their simplicity on the mic. It’s hard to be simple and dope. Plus Big L was the opposite using 5 syllable rhyme schemes while talking fly street shit. His rhyme structures are like cheat codes. I’m not a die-hard Big L dude but I’ve listened to him for 23 years and his shit is incredibly memorable and catchy. That’s why I did “Lamont Coleman” off Hard Boiled - I had those Big L lines in my head for a week and thought they’d be a great hook. And the beat had that eerie Word...Life/Jewelz feel. So it was the ultimate genuflect to the whole unit.

DTN: We seem sometimes to be in a Renaissance of hip-hop with artists like Armand Hammer's Elucid and billy woods both releasing such prolific group material not to mention solo material, as well as the likes of Milo, Mike Eagle, JPEGMAFIA, PremRock, Karma Kids, Ka, Marci, Westside Gunn and the Griselda fam continuously coming with heat and of course yourself and the countless others dropping really noteworthy albums....do you think we're hitting a creative stride right now that we were worried we might not see again 8-10yrs ago? 

Zilla Rocca:  I think we’re just in a media consumption phase as a culture right now. Binge watching shows. Staying glued to the news all day on twitter and cable. In the past only a handful of rappers were wild prolific like Doom, Kool Keith, Lil B, Lil Wayne etc and it made them stand out. Nowadays people hear your project and say “that’s hot but when’s the next one dropping?” Because people are just consuming endless shit now more regularly in that fashion. I’ve always worked on music and did it damn near every single day from 2005-2012 so once I saw people respond more to lots of music these days, I was game to feed them. I’ve always been diligent with lots of songs on deck so it’s nothing for me to try it this way for now. It’s been highly successful I’ll tell you that!

DTN: As someone who is an artist, and as someone who also writes about music where do you think music journalism specifically online has gone wrong over the last 5-10 years? Blogs at one time seemed like the spot where new artist could be broken and discovered but now most places seem no different than the old pay to play models of old. What do you think killed this?

Zilla Rocca:  With music journalism, it’s just things are always changing. Blogs were a reaction to music magazines becoming corporatized and shitty. Then blogs became corporatized and shitty and streaming took off so they got wiped out. Plus youtube has now been around for over 10 years and people just digest and learn shit from video so sitting and reading something is now a different option for music writing or criticism, whereas in the ‘80s through ‘00s it was almost the exclusive means to know about music

DTN: What about this album was different for you in the approach to bringing it all together? How did you decide on the group of producers you gathered and why them for THIS album?

Zilla Rocca:  I really thought this album would be my last. I was about to be a dad and I didn’t think I’d ever have time to work on music again. So I thought about making an album to capture every era from my career. I started in the early 2000’s doing more experimental stuff. Then did boom nap East coast underground music. Then some artsy indie rock sampling stuff. So this album was about showing off all of that.

So choosing the producers to handle that was the key. Steel Tipped Dove is the bridge between the more loop driven east coast beats on here, from Small Pro, Ray West, Disco Vietnam, and Messiah Musik, to the EDM/trap type beats by Starkey and my man William J Sullivan. I probably started the album with his beats and Messiah Musik’s first then chose beats around theirs. I feel like Danny Brown has been really good at that mixture so I patterned it after Old specifically without doing 2 sides to an album that breaks up the style of production. DTN: Jay is 48, Em is 46, El & Killer Mike are 43, do you see yourself actually becoming a Future Former Rapper at some point in time or do you think that it's just going to transition into a different path of creative writing for you, but keep the same essence?

Zilla Rocca:  There will be a day when I hang it up. Maybe it’ll be when I’m 40? I’ll be 36 tomorrow but I feel energized now with people still discovering me. But once my son gets old enough to play sports I know my time will be even more limited. And I’ll be ok with that. Like I said I really didn’t think I’d be doing music right now a few years ago. But great writers get better with age so you shouldn’t stop if you can help it.

DTN: What inspires 36yr old you now to keep moving forward and creating? If you could sit 18yr old you down and give him advice about what to expect and how to move what would it be?

Zilla Rocca:  I just really do what I like now and I don’t care about what happens after that. If no press gets behind it or If it sells 7 copies I’m ok with that. I’m not as thirsty as I was when I was 18. It’s really just about the work. Since I’ve approached music that way things have gotten easier and I’ve found new fans. I would tell my 18-year-old sell the line I said on “Career Crooks Theme”: nothing comes your way when you chase, best be patient.

DTN: What do you hope Future Former Rapper expresses to the people who take time to sit down and listen to it? What do you want the listeners to walk away with from the experience?

Zilla Rocca:  Phonte described his new album in a way that applies to mine: it’s for people who have other shit to do. I was really conscious about the overall running time and number of songs. Selfishly I just want people to hear it and think I’m a great rapper. If they can relate to some of the topics on a personal level, that’s a win too. It’s really autobiographical and very specific to my life growing up loving rap in South Philly in the 80’s and 90’s. But there’s a song about my wife and son and how they became the first thing I loved more than music. So there’s a lot to digest but I wanted to get in and get out like a bank robbery.

DTN: You have Serengeti, Armand Hammer, Curly Castro and another I know I'm missing on the album as guests... What was it about those voices on this album this time around? I know Curly is a regular voice but why Geti and AH...?

Zilla Rocca:  Castro is the most important voice. I deliberately put him on multiple songs because I wanted the album to reflect my life. He’s my best friend and we talk every single day so his voice should be heavily involved. With Armand Hammer, I’ve been working with Elucid since like 2009. It’s great watching people catch up to him now. Billy woods is one of my favorite rap friends ever so even if he didn’t rhyme on the album I would’ve just called him and recorded him talking cause he’s brilliant and hilarious. With Serengeti, I’ve just been a big fan of dude for years and we’ve been twitter homies forever with lots of mutual friends but we’d never worked together. So I wanted him in the mix because he’s very adventurous and bold while being original. Plus he doesn’t do a lot of features so I feel like it’s special getting him on my album.

DTN:  Why is storytelling such an important element in your writing? Even with your writing being more straightforward you've always focused on telling stories, and your favorite MCs have all been great storyteller... What is it about bring able to tell a story and not just say fly shit that has no real depth that calls to you?

Zilla Rocca:  I think storytelling is hugely important. To me, you’re not a great rapper if you can’t tell a convincing story. I like writing in that form because I’m an avid lifelong reader too. I also like structure and coloring within the lines sometimes and stories make you do that. There’s a beginning, middle, and end. Maybe a cool plot twist. I’ve written a fantasy type of story songs, sports stories, crime stories, relationship stories, and personal stories and I appreciate it when they connect with people. “Time Ran Out” off my new EP “Hard Boiled” is a breakup story and it’s one of the most mentioned favorites which shocked me. I wasn’t sure anyone would like it but I felt like it would break up all the random rhyming and fly talk like you said!

DTN: Favorite rap magazines growing up and why? 

Zilla Rocca:  Obviously The Source. I also loved Blaze Magazine and then later Scratch Magazine. It was a real elation seeing the newest issues on newsstands cause we had to go hunt and search for hip hop back then. It was a secret.

DTN: You've dropped shit on your own label, you partnered with Urbnet for the Career Crooks albums with Smallpro, and now you've decided to sign with Jeff Weiss' newly formed POW Recordings for your latest solo. Why at this stage of your career when you're capable of navigating it all on your own would you sign with a new label, and what is it about Jeff that had you decide to work with him for this release (other than the obvious fact he's a clear champion of great hip-hop of all kinds)?

Zilla Rocca:  I only deal with labels that love the music. I like partnering with people who are excited about the project first and foremost. I just left Toronto where URBnet is located and it’s such a clean and diverse city. Made me realize they really had to love Career Crooks to sign us cause our stuff is gritty and edgy being from Philly, which was not my experience of Toronto at all! With Jeff, we’ve known each other 13 years. I knew of POW Recordings when it was just a thought. His plan was to only sign up and coming cats to help them get shine, not Old grizzled vets like me from the Blog Rap Era on the verge of turning 40 years old. So when he heard the album, he fell in love with it and wanted to be the person who put it out. And I just went with it. It was effortless.
