Gregory's fingers curled in the blanket as he called out to the boy he'd considered a bully. He didn't understand. Looking now, he could see the toll everything had taken on Michael.

The emotional breakdown from earlier had to be Gregory's fault, surely. Everything from today was his fault. He'd hit Michael to begin with, but the words coming out of his mouth...

If Michael really was implying that he was Glamrock Freddy, returned to the past simply to continue protecting Gregory, then what happened to his new friend's brother?

Frustrated tears built in Gregory's eyes. Why was everything falling apart so quickly? Why was it so painful? Gregory just wanted to survive.

"No," Michael mumbled. His body stiffened beneath the blanket. "No. No."

"Uhm." Gregory stumbled away from the bed.

"He... he can't be..." Michael curled into a ball beneath the blanket. "It was a prank. It was meant to be a stupid prank... BRING HIM BACK!"

Oh. He was having a nightmare. "Mike?" Gregory said tentatively. He inched closed to the bed again.

It definitely wasn't Freddy possessing Michael. It couldn't be. Whatever was going on, it seemed like a recurring thing for Mike. Maybe that was why he didn't want to sleep. Maybe it was why he changed. Gregory's shoulders relaxed minutely.

"Mike, I think you're having a nightmare-" Gregory cut himself off abruptly when Michael grabbed his wrist.

"Gregory," Michael murmured. He seemed to relax a little bit then. Not much, but at least he wasn't screaming anymore.

Gregory's mouth dried out. He didn't know what to do from here. It was weird, being in the position to comfort someone else again. It was weird, being the source of comfort for someone he'd punched in the face a few days ago.

Michael was strangely affectionate. Gregory wouldn't have guessed, based on how his younger brother reacted to it. The joyous tears that had fallen from his eyes had been worth the discomfort Gregory felt each time Michael hugged them though.

Michael was mumbling his name again. "I'm here," Gregory whispered.

Michael's grip got tighter. "I can't... lose... you..."

Tears filled Gregory's eyes so quickly that he couldn't blink them away. "You won't. I can take care of myself."

"Promise..." Michael turned his head, mumbling into the pillow.

Gregory took that as his cue to leave. He really should've left sooner, actually.

With intense care, as to not upset or wake Michael, Gregory peeled Michael's fingers off his wrist. He then quietly tip-toed out of the room.

This whole ball-pit thing was getting weirder by the minute.

Okay, fine, you've finally pissed me off enough that I'm willing to talk politics on tumblr

I can't speak for all leftists, but when THIS leftist says they're having a hard time voting for Biden this time around, it's not because I don't want people to vote or because I genuinely think Trump wouldn't be any worse

It's because this is the administration that made me finally realize, on a deep and profound gut level, that none of these people actually care about us. That electoralism won't save us - HASN'T saved us, not from COVID, or wildfires, or cops, or billionaires, or genocide.

"But Trump will make all those things worse--" Yeah for sure! But things are bad enough right now that we can't, at least I can't, continue on like things are now, even if I felt like I could trust Biden (or any Democrat, let's be honest, this isn't about him at all, we're not even fighting about primaries this time because we aren't being given a choice) to keep them from getting worse.

By all means, we should vote for Biden, because things getting worse more slowly is better than things getting worse faster. But we deserve better than a life that only gets a little bit worse every year, and I'm sick of people telling me I'm being ungrateful for wanting more than that.

Again: THIS ISN'T ABOUT WHO TO VOTE FOR. this is about spending your time on something, anything - union organizing, clean air advocacy, bringing food and shelter to the houseless, physically preventing the movement of weapons and military contractors - that has a better chance of saving lives than any politician.

"The revolution isn't going to come next year -" okay, well, neither is pushing Dems far enough left that they stop supporting Israel or do anything about emissions or anything else that treats human lives as more important than a billionaire's profit margins. The presidential election happens once every four years, WHY are we ceding an entire year to defending a piece of shit because he's slightly less of a piece of shit than the other guy? What if I told you there's a secret third thing, and that thing isn't voting for a third party but making a once-every-four-years vote as unimportant to you as your wants and desires and hopes and dreams are to any of the people you'd vote for and working your ass off on SOMETHING THAT HELPS PEOPLE instead?

Yeah, this is one reason I stay away from meta discussions on the subreddit now. I'd be such a killjoy lmao.

Because this is part of the "excitement -> backlash -> backlash to the backlash -> excitement for the backlash's backlash, etc." loop that happens on social media. People that aren't fans of X (in this case, Shadowheart) eventually feel like they have to speak up. Then it goes round and round until we all die.

It's a weird cycle, but it happens to every character. In a year's time, there's gonna be some fucking absurd fandom wank, I guarantee it. There's already the hilarious Halsin guys. Give it time and we'll have the Lae'zel brigades (anti- and pro-) beating the shit out of each other in the replies and an eternal war between the Shadowheart simps and haters.

Long ramble ahead to actually talk about the comment, so here's a read more.

The fight made sense to me. But, to dig into... well, everything else before that.

Being cruel to a githyanki? I feel that some folks in the BG3 fandom need to learn what the githyanki are and remember who Lae'zel is. The githyanki are not a sympathetic people, at least not anymore. They're an actual empire trying to expand via all the hallmarks of traditional imperialism. They are slavers and raiders almost to the man, and there is factual evidence of them wanting to rebuild a great empire that spans realms. Calling them fascist frog people is only, like, barely a joke. Lae'zel, at the beginning of the game, is a quintessential brainwashed child of a fascist regime.

Not having more githzerai in the game, other than a fucking brain and, arguably, the gith monks you fight, really kneecapped people's understanding of the -yanki. I know there's a whole thing about alignment, but the githyanki are almost the poster children of Lawful Evil.

Stealing from them and being worried about the fallout of that is one of the most normal reactions possible lmao. Shadowheart's a Sharran that doesn't trust any of her companions. Why should she just play along?

And not having remorse? I don't know, but I'm an admittedly vindictive and petty person and I am very, very loathe to forgive people if they've slighted me. And I'm not even dealing with possible ceremorphosis! So, I guess I get where Shadowheart is coming from and it never struck me as even remotely strange for her to require a lot of work to even trust Lae'zel, let alone "bury the hatchet."

It's also perfectly in keeping with Shadowheart's character, especially that early on, to not respect an honorable duel and instead try to kill Lae'zel while she has the chance.

Mix this with Shadowheart starting as a not-at-all-trusting person? I mean, I don't know. It's just a tastes thing. I'd have been confused if everyone in camp was just cool with Lae'zel, which after a point they are. I don't really buy that some of the others would put up with her, but I like her character enough to let it slide and enjoy what's in the game.

And just let a character have negative traits, flaws, whatever! The companions are great for that reason!

Plus, she's a literal abuse victim. Compassion is in some ways a skill, and a lot of people lack it.
