I just finished rewatching As Told By Ginger again and I noticed something about the end of season 3 I hadn't thought about before.
I've seen a lot of people complain about how the show was unnecessarily cruel to the Griplings because they gave them such a "bad" ending. While I agree that it was cruel, I also think that it was ultimately for a bigger purpose. I don't think that the intention was to give them comeuppance or for the viewer to be happy about their misfortune. No, they wanted you to sympathize with them. Both Courtney and Blake had very vulnerable moments in front of Ginger and Carl respectively shortly after it all happened, and they were genuinely quite sincere and heartfelt. Ginger and Carl sympathized with them and were there for them despite everything they had done. And I think they wanted the viewer to feel the same.
The more important aspect is though, that this set iff their further character development. Because, despite how much character development they had gone through and how much nicer they had become, particularly in Courtney's case; at the end of the day, they were still stuck up and condescending. The writers stripping them of their fortune and therefore of their entitlement, feels to me like they finally put them on a path to become more humble and genuine people. I also think that it strengthened their friendships with Ginger and Carl in a more profound way than would have been possible if they had stayed the same.
So really, I think that their kind of cruel ending actually made the Griplings better people and wasn't such a bad ending after all. The only thing that was really flaky was when none of the Griplings showed up in the final scene. Honestly, it would have wrapped up so nicely if they had shown that they ultimately did manage to work through their issues and that they really did benefit from what happened. And that now, they had become good lifelong friends of the Foutleys. Of course the producers might have had their reasons not to include them, but I think it was a huuuge missed opportunity. In that context, I understand why some people see their ending as mean-spirited. But I really don't think it was intended that way. Not including them at the end was the only real error they made imo, whatever the reason might have been.
(I guess it also plays into the overarching theme of the show, about the other side and how the grass there is greener. In the end, both Courtney and Ginger switched to the other's side.)

Panfandom Hanukkah Bingo
WHAT: A fanworks bingo celebrating Jewish (and Jew-ish) characters across any and all fandoms. Write fanfiction and/or create graphics (moodboards, edits, vids, whatever you like) to fill prompts on this overall bingo card. During the 8 nights of Hanukkah, submit your fills to the AO3 collection and/or post them on Tumblr to be reblogged and added to the Bingo Masterpost.
WHY: Jewish characters and Jewish fans are often overlooked or erased during the Winter Holiday Season in favor of “Secret Santa” exchanges, Christmas-themed fics, and the idea that ~Hanukkah is Jewish Christmas~ (which spoiler for all fics in this bingo: it’s not). This panfandom Bingo challenge is to celebrate Hanukkah on its own terms and give Jewish characters and fans a place to breathe. :)
