2. there’s mistletoe right above us, and oh my god I think I’ve loved you for years and I’m NOT about to pass this chance up.— shino
teacher! shino be hitting different. u can teach me whatever you want, sir
The relationship you had with Shino was complicated, complicated, as in you hated just being his friend. You weren’t sure when your feelings had shifted, as you had always been fond of him, but now, you found yourself aching because of him. Now, you found yourself hanging off every word he said, even if they were few. You saw him in a new light, something that lit your body up, you craved him. His affection, his kiss, his touch. The ache was something new, something that grew stronger the closer the holidays came.
Now, as you stood shoulder to shoulder with him at the party created for the students before they took a small break to spend time with their families, you wanted to reach out and take his hand in yours, like when you were children, but something was holding you back. The bitter fear of rejection. If he rejected your affection, you were sure that you couldn’t take it, so instead of that, you continued to watch the children play and sing along to the tacky music.
The party was long over, and you had offered to stay and help Shino clean up the mess the children had made of the place. You were sure that it was a bad idea, but you had offered before you could even really think about it. Sure, he might of been quiet, but that didn’t stop you from having fun. Shino was sure that you knew how fond of you he was, but that didn’t stop the hesitancy in his hands when you attempted to swoop him into an awful dance as you swept the floor.
A ghost of a smile passed across his mouth as he watched the uncoordinated way you attempted to knock down streamers with the very broom you had just tried to sweep him away with. It took longer to clean than you thought it would, but considering your shenanigans, it wasn’t surprising.
Shino had offered to walk you home, and you had accepted. It was dark by now, and you would like to spend as much time with him as possible. You had both decided to split up to collect your things before meeting at the front door. There was a nervousness pooling into your stomach, and you weren’t quite sure why. With each step you took to get closer to the main doors, the anxiousness in your veins grew.
He was there, hovering by the doorway, and it lifted slightly at the site of him. You continued your walk, trying to quiet your footsteps in an attempt to sneak up on him. The moment you started to close in on him, he spoke, “Did you get what you needed?” You cursed, mouth pulling into a frown, “I still don’t know how you do that!” The deep bravado of his laugh rattled you down to your bones, and a wave of fondness erupted through your body, and you looked away from him, opting to instead look out at the street.
Shino cleared his throat hesitantly, and you looked back up at him. His head tilted up slightly, your gaze following up to the frame of the door, confusion settling in the back of your mind. Was that a plant? You stared dumbly at the hanging plant.. red berries.. green leaves... a red bow.. oh no. Your mouth was dry all of a sudden, and your eyes flickered back to Shino’s face, and in the very moment, you realized how hard to read he was.
You stuttered out a, “Mistletoe?” A shallow nod was all you received in answer. You licked your dry lips, mouth parting again, “It’s.. it’s bad luck..” Shino finished the sentence, “To not kiss..” You nodded along to his words, and sucking in a deep breath, your hands caught the sides of his face, tugging his mouth down to yours in a soft kiss.
You were pulling away when his hand caught the back of your head, pulling you back into him. The cold was biting at your cheeks, but as cliché as it sounds, you didn’t really mind. That moment was what you had waited on for years, and you weren’t complaining at all.
One thing was certain, once you figured out who hung the mistletoe, you were shaking their fucking hand, and that was that.
