JULY 8, 2023 | JULIA KOVALEVA
A solo career after being in a popular band has never been easy, especially when you’re only 18 years old and have been part of the world-famous boy band One Direction. Yet, even as the band comes to an end, you still find joy in being part of it.
Louis Tomlinson was the one who never sought a solo career. However, when you’re a true artist, being on stage is the only way to go. So, you have to venture out alone and create your own show. For Louis, it was a long journey filled with personal drama and the postponement of his first solo tour in 2020, as he reveals in his recently released documentary “All of Those Voices.” And now, here we are at his world tour, “Faith in the Future 2023,” listening to his second album, “Faith in the Future,” which was released in November 2022.
As we reach the halfway point of the North American leg, we find ourselves in Phoenix, AZ, at the Arizona Financial Theatre.
The venue is nearly full by the time the first opening act takes the stage. People already know that this show is a must-see.
Making his U.S. debut, Andrew Cushin, an insanely talented 23-year-old singer-songwriter, delivers a touching and extremely inspiring performance. With his stunning baritone voice and lyrics that belie his age, Andrew sings about his own struggles, hopes, and dreams. He is about to release his debut album, “Waiting For The Rain,” in the fall, which includes all the singles he performs, including the new one, “It’s Coming Round Again.”
The second opening act is The Snuts. Despite their van breaking down on their way from Las Vegas, they managed to make it to Phoenix. They are another phenomenal discovery for the audience. Hailing from Scotland, this band is also highly supported by their fans. They open their set with their recently released single, “Gloria.” The Snuts have the vibe of a band playing in a small bar, and each member is a talented musician who clearly enjoys their time on stage, just as the audience enjoys their electrifying music.
Even those who are hearing them for the first time find themselves dancing and singing along, fueled by the band’s positive energy.
With both these engaging openers, time flies by, and finally, Louis Tomlinson takes the stage. The crowd erupts into cheers and excitement as he begins his first song, “The Greatest.” For those who are familiar with One Direction, his show is a total surprise. His solo music leans towards the edgy side, but it’s also incredibly catchy and powerful. Louis has an amazing band accompanying him on stage, and the entire set is perfectly suited for performing in huge venues. Touring and interacting with the audience is his favorite part of the job, as can be seen in his latest album, “Faith in the Future.”
Of course, he performs a couple of songs from his former band as a tribute to that chapter of his life. One of the highlights of the night is his breathtaking cover of the Arctic Monkeys‘ song, “505.” With his unique interpretation and personal touch, he breathes new life into the track. Beyond his own performance, Louis’ concert is also a visual spectacle. The stage setup, lighting, and production elements create a mesmerizing atmosphere that perfectly complements the setlist. The show, overall, is a testament to Louis’ growth as a solo artist. Every night, he proves his ability to connect with the audience and shines on stage as the one and only member and artist, Louis Tomlinson.

Here’s the article. And here is my attempt to summarize the article, after running it through both Google Translate and Yandex Translate.
It starts with a quick recap of Boss Yerbolat running the K-TOP Idols competition in 2014 and putting together Ninety One from there. The group rapidly turned into a “social phenomenon” (quoth both translation sites) even in the face of protests, and a whole Q-pop industry emerged: Black Dial, Crystalz, Mad Men, Newton, Juzim, etc., etc., but of that wave only Ninety One and Ziruza are left. (Alpha fans, hold your fire; I think they’re going to get mentioned later.)
Then the article quotes Samat Kazmagambetov, a.k.a. TIKO! (Or Teddy, if you haven’t paid attention to the Saga of Black Dial since they originally debuted.) Bless! I’ve suspected for quite a bit that Tiko is a smarter guy than his boorish exit from Black Dial would indicate. Tiko says that this idea of promoting the Kazakh language through attention-getting global-audience-ready pop, and creating a space outside the toi circuit, motivated him and his bandmates too. Friendly reminder (Azattyq doesn’t mention it) that Black Dial was originally Yesbolat Bedelkhan’s creation.
Next to speak is Simbat Zholamanova, a PhD student at Hanguk University in Korea. Hooray for aca-Eaglez! Zholamanova talks about Ninety One gradually adding elements of Kazakh culture and history to their music videos. (More on this.)
Okay, says the article, in 2018 and 2019 Q-pop was this rapidly burgeoning phenomenon, so what happened? Well, the pandemic, for one thing. Tiko and Ne1tron talk about the lack of funds, though Tiko does say that his producer (not Yesbolat Bedelkhan at this point, since this would have been after Tiko and Esko left Black Dial) tried to help with expenses for a while. Azattyq quotes an April 2021 interview with ZaQ (did they not interview the guys directly?) in which ZaQ says Ninety One made no profit for the first three years.
Oh and Mad Men’s drug charges get mentioned, sigh. (See @balasbraces on Moora’s lawyer’s almost-certainly-justified complaints.)
Then there’s a section on Boss Yerbolat trying to work with the government (the ruling Amanat party, though it wasn’t called Amanat at the time), with not a lot of success. “Only one group cannot make a market,” he argues, echoing ZaQ’s repeated complaints about the lack of support for global outreach. I’m still of the position that Ninety One doesn’t really want to be beholden to the Kazakhstani state any more than they absolutely have to be, but I’m saying that from a very different environment, with different goals.
Zholamanova points out that the Kazakhstani music market is very different from that in Korea, as in people may not be used to paying for concerts (again, the idea of the popular music market not existing separately from the toi industry) and Boss Yerbolat maneuvered around that for as long as he could. And now Ninety One have sponsorships and such, and independence. At the end the article mentions only Ninety One, Ziruza, AZ as a solo artist, and Alpha as carrying the Q-pop torch. Ne1tron hypes Kalifarniya. Zholamanova says that something is going to come out of all this in the next couple years.
And that’s about it; nothing particularly new, if you’ve been following for a while. I’m disappointed (and slightly surprised) that Azattyq wasn’t able to get Newly Independent Ninety One on the line; it’s not as if they’ve been shying away from giving interviews lately. But this is definitely more sympathetic coverage than I’ve seen in the past.

Album Reviews: Alice Cooper / Extreme
This week I got to review some special edition reissues from the King of Shock Rock, Alice Cooper and the first new album in 15 years from Extreme! Me at age 15 is high-fiving myself for the reviews I’m getting to do this week!
Alice Cooper Killer and School’s Out Deluxe Editions
Earlier this month I got to review the live album release of the supergroup Hollywood Vampires featuring Alice Cooper. Listening to that served as a reminder that Alice truly is the King of Shock Rock! Easily! I’ve been a long time fan. I first got into him in the late 80s and soon discovered his 70s work. My Dad gave me the Marvel comic of him from the 1970s. As Wayne and Garth said to him in Wayne’s World, “we’re not worthy!” I have several of his albums in my collection, including the rare vinyl of Billion Dollar Babies, his Greatest Hits compilation and more. Through this blog, I have been lucky enough to review Alice’s 2019 EP Breadcrumbs and his 2021 album Detroit Stories. This week Rhino is releasing special deluxe editions of 1971′s Killer and 1972′s School’s Out.

School’s Out Deluxe Edition
For context, before Alice was a solo artist, Alice Cooper was a band. Formed in Phoenix, AZ in 1964, the band featured Alice on lead vocals, Glen Buxton on lead guitar, Michael Bruce on rhythm guitar and keyboards, Dennis Dunaway on bass, and Neal Smith on drums. The band brought an element of danger to rock music again by bringing their persona to their albums and bringing shock value to their stage shows that felt like bringing monster or horror movies to the rock concert experience. But the trick was, they were more than just a persona, they had a punkish garage rock sound that lived up to the hype. By late 1971, the band already had a minor hit with “I’m Eighteen” and they had released one of their best albums Love it to Death. The band’s 4th album Killer was a breakthrough album and spawned such hits as “Under My Wheels” (one of my favorites), “Be My Lover” and “Desperado”. The new Deluxe Edition features the original album, an April 1972 concert from Puerto Rico, and some alternate versions. The packaging also includes a replica of a 1972 calendar and some (ahem) killer liner notes talking with the band members. The band’s 5th album School’s Out was released about 7 months later. In addition to the big hit title song, the entire album was a concept album about school ending. The packaging replicates the original release’s album cover that is a desk opening up and they even include the panties on the vinyl. In addition to the original album, it also includes a May 1972 concert from Miami, and some previously unreleased alternative takes. The liner notes are incredible here too. When liner notes are good they’re really good and here they are quite impressive. I’ve always enjoyed these albums, but I don’t remember them impressing the way Love it to Death or Billion Dollar Babies did, but after listening to these deluxe editions I was blown away. Awesome 70s hard rock that truly comes alive on vinyl!

Extreme Six
Not too often I get the chance to review the first new album in over 15 years from a band I out and out loved when I was a teen! Let me backup for a minute: In 1985, when I was a little kid, I discovered a local band who didn’t even have a record deal yet, on V66 (Boston’s music video TV channel, 1985-86). The band was Extreme and their locally-made music video for “Mutha (don’t wanna go to school today)” was directed by a local film student, the late Scott Kalvert (who went onto become a big music video director and directed a few films including Basketball Diaries). A few years later, their self-titled debut was released on A&M Records in 1989. One of the singles off that album was a newer version of “Mutha”, which I recognized immediately! I became a huge fan and listened to them on cassette tape 24/7. The next album was really what launched them into the limelight beyond the metal crowd: Pornograffitti! People who didn’t even like hard rock or heavy metal were listening to them because of their ballad “More Than Words”, which went to #1. My favorite album of theirs was 1992′s III Sides to Every Story. In Feb. 1995, the band was getting a star on the Rock Walk of Fame in front of Tower Records in Boston and doing a signing to celebrate. My buddy and I went to the signing and the entire band (Gary Cherone, Nuno Bettencourt, Pat Badger, and their drummer at the time Mike Mangini) signed my CD of Waiting for the Punchline. All very cool guys!  The band broke up the following year and they did their own endeavors (including Cherone’s stint with Van Halen and Bettencourt’s longtime collaboration with Rihanna), but reunited periodically over the years. They reunited in 2008 for the album Saudades de Rock and tour, since then it’s been concerts here and there. That last album had big expectations considering it had been over a decade since the previous one, but it did introduce their new drummer Kevin Figueiredo. The band has had a few pop culture moments in the last few years, including Jimmy Fallon and Jack Black’s “More than Words” parody and “Play with Me” being featured on Stranger Things. Now the band is back with Six.

album cover
The band tends to get lumped in with one-hit wonders from the 90s, but they’ve sold over 10 million albums worldwide. They had a lot of catchy melodic tunes and they were one of the stand out performances of the 1992 Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. For my documentary Life on the V: The Story of V66, there was a segment about the band’s popularity on V66 and I was lucky enough to interview former Extreme guitarist Hal Lebeaux and drummer Paul Geary. The band has always been bigger than the sum of their parts, but there’s no denying the superstar in the band is Nuno Bettencourt, possibly the greatest guitar virtuoso of to emerge out of the late 80s, up there with Slash, Tom Morello and Kurt Cobain. I was lucky enough to see Extreme live in 1991, 1995 and 2009 and each time they truly brought it! Just a few months ago, I saw Joe Perry and Cherone was singing some of the songs with him and it was quite impressive! With Six, the band is truly back. I mean - WOW! This is their best album since III Sides to Every Story over 30 years ago. Guitar geeks especially will be dissecting so much of the playing. But it’s that classic Extreme melodicism that’s on full display here. There’s plenty of rockers, but it’s when they take it down a notch with songs like “Other Side of the Rainbow” and “Hurricane” where they are silencing the haters. This is going to take a few more listens to see how it stacks up with other air-guitar classics from the band, but let’s raise a glass to this triumphant comeback!

Nas may not be the most popular rapper of all time, although he is quite well known, and he may not have the best discography of all time, although he did drop Illmatic, he is considered by many to be the best pure MC of all time in terms of having the ability to rap.
He’s been doing it for the past 30 years and has had a recent resurgence with younger hip-hop fans, garnering him respect from old and new generations.
Here is the evolution of Nas.

Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones was born on September 14th, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York to Olu Dara, a jazz and blues musician, and Fannie Ann. He grew up in public housing in Queens, where his interest in hip-hop was born.

In April 1994, Nas dropped his debut album, Illmatic, featuring production, a legendary group of producers including Large Professor, Pete Rock, DJ Premier and Q-Tip. The album is considered by many hip-hop purists to be the greatest of all time. It features classic records such as “N.Y. State of Mind,” The World is Yours” and “One Love.”

Nas’ second record came out in July 1996 and was highly anticipated due to the high praise on his debut project. While not held in as high regard as Illmatic, It Was Written is still respected in hip-hop circles. It arguably produced one of his most popular records ever, “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That).”

Jay-Z Beef
After trading minor shots over the years, Jay-Z dropped “Takeover” on the Blueprint where he went full-steam ahead at Nas and Mobb Deep, which people forget. The song debuted at Hot 97’s Summer Jam Concert. Nas came back with one of the greatest diss songs of all time in “Ether.” The track did such a good job of dissing Jay that people now use the title of the song as a verb. For example, “he ethered him on that song.”
Thankfully, the two legendary MCs have squashed their beef.

JANUARY 2021 GOLD STAR MEDIA SCHEDULES & REVIEW
Members may earn 3 points each (up to 6 points) for writing, by the end of February 7 KST:
A solo para of 400+ words based on their monthly schedule (does not count toward your monthly total).
A thread of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) based on their monthly schedule.
Threads do not have to take place directly during an important date listed on the schedule, but must be related to what the muse is mentioned to be doing in the paragraph explaining their schedule/the company’s schedule for the month and/or their thoughts on the mentioned activities or lack thereof.
These schedules may be updated throughout the month if new information needs to be added.
Reminder: December schedule posts are due by the end of January 7 KST. Please do not post schedule posts in the fmdschedule tag.
OVERALL COMPANY
The company holds their annual meeting near the end of the month to go over goals and plans for the new year and congratulate their artists (and other staff) on a job well-done in the previous year. Also typical, they’ll do their annual health check for the purposes of media-playing caring about their artists’ health. 2020 was a good year for the company’s profits and public relevance, even if things began to get messy behind the scenes. The meeting doesn’t show any sign of acknowledgement about the any behind-the-scenes planning problems, instead focusing on boasting achievements by their artists in Korea as well as other large foreign markets with the aim of “raising morale”.
Important dates:
January 26: Meeting for company artists and those who work directly with them (managers, PR, etc.) headed by CEO Bang Sunyoung. Gold Star Media’s goal statements and overall plans for 2020 will be delivered.
Various dates (up to individual muse): As per usual January Gold Star custom, all group members and soloists will be asked to individually schedule beginning of the year medical check-up appointments on Gold Star’s dollar if they have not had one in the past six months. This will be slightly media-played as it is every year by the company as the company having a clean bill of health regardless of the results, although any medical concerns will be privately addressed.
GOLD STAR SOLOIST 1
"Eight” is the hit everyone expects it to be and is a good omen as the release that ushers in the new year for Gold Star. Promotions are kept simple, as they usually are for her since she doesn’t need much push to succeed with the public, and she’ll film an acoustic performance video of “Eight” as a gift to her fans. She’ll be revisiting some old songs in the practice rooms behind the scenes as well to prepare for an upcoming mini-concert of her own on Yoo Heeyeol’s Sketchbook.
Important dates:
January 4: “Eight” Acoustic Ver. video filming (to be released: January 10).
January 9: Performance at Golden Disk Awards Day One at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: BC Soloist 1, BEE, Dimensions Soloist 3, Lucid).
January 11: KBS Cool FM Volume Up radio show guesting.
January 30: End of music show promotions.
GOLD STAR SOLOIST 2
After the end of music show promotions, she’ll fly out to L.A. to do some networking and film an English interview there to promote the English version of her latest single. Gold Star has marketed it as her debut American single in an effort to rewrite her unsuccessful effort a few years ago. Gold Star would like to begin to promote her more online as well to reach more young fans, so she’ll film a cover video that will be uploaded to Gold Star’s Youtube channel, something they plan to have her do a semi-regularly from now on.
Important dates:
January 10: End of music show promotions.
January 18: Front Row Live Ent interview.
January 23: “Tango” cover video filming (to be uploaded: January 31).
GOLD STAR SOLOIST 3
He flies back out in the second week of the month to begin the North American leg of his world tour. He’ll tour for two weeks across the United States before he flies back to Seoul and has the remainder of the month free once again to recuperate and so that he can attend the company-wide meeting.
Important dates:
January 9: Before We Begin tour concert at House of Blues in San Diego, CA, USA.
January 10: Before We Begin tour concert at The Van Buren in Phoenix, AZ, USA.
January 13: Before We Begin tour concert at Granada Theater in Dallas, TX, USA.
January 14: Before We Begin tour concert at House of Blues in Houston, TX, USA.
January 16: Before We Begin tour concert at The Basement East in Nashville, TN, USA.
January 18: Before We Begin tour concert at The Beacham in Orlando, FL, USA.
January 19: Before We Begin tour concert at The Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA, USA.
January 21: Before We Begin tour concert at Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh, NC, USA.
January 22: Before We Begin tour concert at The Fillmore Silver Spring in Silver Spring, MD, USA.
SILHOUETTE
Silhouette have a busy month without awards show to attend. On the second, their first day back to regular work after returning from the cruise and tour, they’ll hold a press conference to hype up their upcoming concerts. They’ll be asked and expected to answer questions about the concept (”til death do us part” / “seduction, desire, betrayal, revenge”), the songs they’ll be performing, and their feelings preparing for the concert without spoiling the set list or special stages. They’ll then hold four concerts over the course of the month, two in Seoul, one in Tokyo, and one in Los Angeles. In between concerts, they’ll fly to Bangkok to film their comeback M/V and shoot photos for the comeback.
Important dates:
January 2: Tonight 37.2°C press conference.
January 9: “Taller Than You” M/V filming.
January 15: Pre-release of “I Miss You”.
January 18: Tonight 37.2°C 19+ concert at Central City Millennium Hall in Seoul.
January 19: Tonight 37.2°C 19+ concert at Central City Millennium Hall in Seoul.
January 21-22: “You’re The Best” M/V filming, teaser photo shoot, and photo book shoot in Bangkok, Thailand.
January 25: Tonight 37.2°C 19+ concert at Shibuya Public Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
January 29: Tonight 37.2°C 19+ concert at Club Bound LA in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
ARIA
Aria has to do the final preparations for their comeback before it releases near the middle of the month. They’re running on quite a late schedule, perhaps a result of the poor management that’s slowly becoming infamous within the company, so both the album photo shoots and the M/V filming are rushed to be finished just before the comeback. Luckily, everything is still ready in time and the release goes off without a hitch. Unfortunately, “Eung Eung” doesn’t get the same attention “I’m So Sick” did, although it does succeed at outperforming their last two releases.
Important dates:
January 3: Comeback teaser photo and photo book shoot.
January 10: “Eung Eung” M/V filming.
January 18: Release of “Eung Eung” & Percent mini-album showcase, music show promotions continue through February 18.
ORIGIN
Origin begins their grand world tour this month with five dates in California. They’ll fly out to the United States for those five concerts before flying back to Seoul so that they can make it in time for the company meeting, though it will be close in timing. They’ll continue to tour for the next several months, but management passes down that Gold Star would really like to see them find mega-success in foreign markets this year and there are plans for both a Japanese comeback and a full English-language release before there are any plans for them to make a Korean-language comeback.
Important dates:
January 10: Performance at Golden Disk Awards Day Two at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: CHARM, WISH, Alien, MARS, 7ROPHY, Impulse).
January 16: Map of the Soul tour concert at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, USA.
January 17: Map of the Soul tour concert at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, USA.
January 22: Map of the Soul tour concert at Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, USA.
January 23: Map of the Soul tour concert at Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, USA.
January 24: Map of the Soul tour concert at Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, USA.
IMPULSE
Impulse has one more awards show performance in the form of the second day of the Golden Disk Awards. Before and after that, their priority for the month is to record their next comeback album. It’s their first full-length album since 2018. The sound is overall a bit brighter to match the spring season it will be released in, though the sleek sound they’ve headed toward recently remains in tact.
Important dates:
January 10: Performance at Golden Disk Awards Day Two at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: CHARM, WISH, Alien, MARS, 7ROPHY, Origin).
   ↳ PULS2
PULS2 will be doing a showcase tour in between recording for the full group comeback. They’ll be all over East Asia this month for the beginning of the tour, though they’ll stop back to Seoul in between stops.
Important dates:
January 17: Showcase tour concert at Broadway Theater in Macau.
January 20: Showcase tour concert at Zepp Divercity in Tokyo, Japan.
January 21: Showcase tour concert at Zepp Diverycity in Tokyo, Japan.
January 24: Showcase tour concert at Taipei International Convention Center in Taipei, Taiwan.
January 27: Showcase tour concert at Zepp Namba in Osaka, Japan.
January 28: Showcase tour concert at Zepp Namba in Osaka, Japan.
January 31: Showcase tour concert at Nusantra Hall in Jakarta, Indonesia.
FUSE
In place of any more awards show performances or attendances, Fuse gets back to touring. This time, they have two dates in Japan. It’s their first time touring in several months, so they’ll continue to rehearse beforehand to get everything down for the next few months of finishing their tour. Management is open about their plans for a sub-unit between the leader and main dancer now that the new year has begun, but the pair won’t begin working on their unit debut until next month.
Important dates:
January 9: La Rouge tour concert at Hiroshima Sun Plaza in Hiroshima, Japan.
January 21: La Rouge tour concert at Osaka-jo Hall in Osaka, Japan.
ELEMENT
Now that their comeback music is recorded, Element will throw themselves into mastering the choreography for the title track, as well as two of the album’s b-sides (the latter of which only involves the main vocal and maknae). At the end of the month, they’ll hold a mini fan-meeting to check in with (a few hundred) fans and will be expected to let slip that they’re working on a comeback to appease them. The fan-meeting will be short, but they’ll perform a few of their songs and get the chance to interact with fans who are brought up on stage.
Important dates:
January 31: Mini fan-meeting at Yes24 MUV Hall in Seoul.
FEMME FATALE
Femme Fatale continues their dome tour this month (see November’s schedule for special stages), with two stops in Osaka. While they’re in Seoul, they’ll get news of their comeback plans for the year (Gold Star promises them at least two comebacks) and they’ll receive the demo of their first comeback single of the year, “How You Like That”, before they go in to record it in the studio before the month comes to an end.
Important dates:
January 16: In Your Area World tour concert at Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan.
January 17: In Your Area World tour concert at Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan.

Every Ninety One Song Reviewed: Introduction to the Group and Its Members
First, our basics:
Ninety One was originally formed under the aegis of Juz Entertainment in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and made its debut in September 2015 with the EP Aiyptama. Since then they have released one full album (Qarangy Zharyq, 2017) and three other EPs (Dopamine, 2018; Men Emes, 2019; and 91, 2020) as well as one movie, one high-school-set drama, several different reality-ish shows, and a whole whole lot of Instagram Stories. Their fans are known as Eaglez. To date their work has almost exclusively been in Kazakh but they’re reportedly working on English-language songs. They are largely self-produced and, as of this spring, self-managed.
Their style of music is heavily Korean-idol-pop influenced (read: there is always a rap verse, often two rap verses) and often dependent on beats and synth influences though guitars show up every now and then. (So do dombras, come to think of it.) One of their co-composers has a jazz background, and it peeks through on occasion. They sing love songs but not nearly as many love songs as you’re probably expecting. There will be politics. Also, puns.
The Members
Tumblr media
Alem (Batyrkhan Malikov, born 18 Feb 93) is technically the oldest, but is, by his own admission, too peace-loving to fit the role of leader well; Tumblr may have moved past describing people as cinnamon rolls but he is absolutely a cinnamon roll. He is also the one with the most extensive performing experience prior to joining Ninety One, having traveled with his father's band as a kid and later competed on Kazakhstan's version of The Voice. He is now Ninety One's best singer (IMHO) and its primary co-composer (alongside Bala, most often) and also plays multiple instruments; in general he gives the impression of being a more intuitive and creative thinker than some of his more cerebral bandmates. He is, by the way, married (as of last year), to Veronika Zhangalova, a model who had previously worked for Juz Entertainment, and from what I've seen and read a similarly lovely person.
Tumblr media
Ace (Azamat Ashmakyn, born 29 Aug 93) is the main chorus-belter and current leader of Ninety One, though as anti-hierarchical as this group has trended, I cannot for the life of me tell you what the leader role actually entails. (Maybe he makes the final call on matters business- and finance-related? I'm speculating; I have no evidence.) He is also considered the closest thing the group has to a "face" or "visual" although that's silly because (a) they're all good-looking and (b) dude seems perpetually disinclined to take his own attractiveness seriously. He is the one who trained with SM Entertainment for a couple years (roughly 2012-14) and later was working to replicate a Korean-idol career trajectory, i.e., acting on the side: he was in two movies in 2019. And he may go back to that at some point, but more recently he's been co-composing. Also jogging. Also alternating, during livestreams, between making faces for the camera and settling into the corner with his phone like a mom at the playground.
Tumblr media
AZ (Azamat Zenkaev, born 28 Sept 93) was the group's leader, co-rapper, and co-lyricist from debut until his departure in 2020. The split was amicable; when AZ held a party to celebrate a solo single release (in the MV of which he shot Borat, by the way), the other four showed up and hugged him while looking pleased. (Have to say, as an Inspirit, following a group where one member leaves and everybody remains chill and publicly supportive of each other has been... refreshing.) AZ could be described as a little like Jim Morrison, if Jim Morrison had been a Kazakhstani ex-sailor with a much better sense of self-preservation: which is to say, AZ's raps leaned more towards the poetic and descriptive. Having bounced around for a bit after leaving the group, he has recently started his own label, so I wouldn’t expect him to appear back on stage with Ninety One any time soon.
Tumblr media
ZaQ (Dulat Mukhametkaliev, born 8 February 96) is the group's chief rapper, chief lyricist, and chief theorist. I don't say that lightly: the man has lots of ideas, particularly about art, nationalism, music, the Kazakh language, and the combination of the four, and it is an irony and a tragedy that roughly 10% of his expressions of said ideas have been translated into English. He is also behind almost all of the multilingual wordplay in Ninety One's discography, and all the anime references, as he holds the title of the biggest weeb in the group (in the face of stiff competition). He's also released a mixtape and a solo album and in 2018 hosted Qara beri, a competition/performance show meant to showcase homegrown Kazakhstani hip-hop. With as much as he tries to get done it's a wonder that he finds the time to be very goofy, but also: he can be very goofy.
Tumblr media
Bala (Daniyar Kulumshin, born 19 February 98) is Ninety One's youngest member (yes, you can say maknae; if you want to get into the spirit of things and learn some Kazakh, the term is kenzhe), second baritone, and now second rapper, and for a while was also its designated Cute Brat. (Season 1 of Ninety One Space, the group's intermittently produced slice-of-life web series, is essentially The Bala Is a Cute Brat and Alem Thinks It's Delightful Show.) He has since become its primary co-composer and (more recently) co-lyricist, so you could argue that Ninety One's most recent crop of songs are more Bala's creations than anyone else's. Having grown up in a musical family and been in Ninety One since he was 17, he seems the most at ease with the strange twists and turns of pop-star life, and... not conceited, exactly, but let me put it this way: in contrast to Ace, Bala takes his own attractiveness absolutely seriously, and deploys it when he thinks it necessary, which is often.
And Also
Get deep enough into this rabbit hole and you’ll start meeting the behind-the-scenes people; Juz Entertainment did not have a huge staff, and some of its former employees have moved into Ninety One’s current entourage, so Eaglez can recognize (and feel affection for) a number of people who help record but don’t get recorded themselves. I’ll just pull out two here who will come up a lot in the reviews:
Yerbolat Bedelkhan is the CEO of Juz Entertainment and the guy who put Ninety One together in the first place, casting AZ and ZaQ through a competition series, K-TOP Idols. He would go on to, in addition to being head of all the administrative work, direct a bunch of the music videos and shepherd Ninety One’s various non-musical projects; I tend to believe, admittedly with no immediate evidence on hand, that he has also contributed backing vocals from time to time. (Before Ninety One he made his reputation with his own group, Orda.) His relationship with the Ninety One members (including AZ) has remained delightfully affectionate even as his oversight over them declined and eventually dissolved altogether. Out of long habit I will be referring to him as Boss Yerbolat, although I guess his proper title now is Boss Emeritus Yerbolat.
Bibotta is a stylist and fashion designer who has been working with Ninety One for a loooong time, albeit not exclusively (I believe they had a new stylist for their most recent concert). She deserves credit for the looks we’re going to be praising / blaming / joking about, but references to her will also serve as reminders of the significant and underappreciated amount of female brainpower that brings Ninety One to life, including Zhadra Abduzhapparova as the group’s longtime makeup artist and Aissya Nestay as frequent choreographer.
All right! You are now properly equipped to know who’s who. We’ll kick things off properly tomorrow with “Aiyptama,” Ninety One’s debut.

Babyface
Tumblr media
Kenneth Brian Edmonds (born April 10, 1959), known professionally as Babyface, is an American singer, songwriter and record producer. He has written and produced over 26 number-one R&B hits throughout his career, and has won 11 Grammy Awards. He was ranked number 20 on NME's 50 of The Greatest Producers Ever list.
Early life
Edmonds was born on April 10, 1958, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Marvin and Barbara Edmonds. Barbara was a production operator at a pharmaceutical plant. Edmonds, who is the fifth of six brothers (including future After 7 band members Melvin and Kevon Edmonds, the latter of whom went on to have a modestly successful solo career), attended North Central High School in Indianapolis, and as a shy youth, wrote songs to express his emotions. When he was in eighth grade, Edmonds' father died of lung cancer, leaving his mother to raise her sons alone. At this stage, Edmonds became determined to have a career in music.
Music career
Edmonds later played with funk performer Bootsy Collins, who tagged him "Babyface" because of his youthful look. He also performed in the group Manchild (which had a 1977 hit "Especially for You" with band member Daryl Simmons) as a guitarist. In 1982 Edmonds played with funk band Redd Hott produced by Geoge Kerr. He played keyboards in the light-funk and R&B group the Deele (which also included drummer Antonio "L.A." Reid, with whom he would later form a successful writing and producing partnership). One of his first major credits as a songwriter for outside artists came when he wrote the tune "Slow Jam" for the R&B band Midnight Star in 1983. The tune was on Midnight Star's 1983 double-platinum No Parking on the Dance Floor album. Babyface remained in the Deele until 1988, when both he and Reid left the group.
His album Playlist consists of eight cover songs and two original works. It was released on September 18, 2007. It was the first album on the newly re-launched Mercury Records label.
On February 4, 2014, he released a Grammy Award-winning duet album with Toni Braxton titled Love, Marriage & Divorce on Motown Records.
Other ventures
Writing and producing
From the late 1980s to the early 90s, he wrote R&B and dance songs, writing and producing music for Bobby Brown ("Roni"), Karyn White ("Love Saw It"), Pebbles ("Girlfriend", "Mercedes Boy"), The Whispers ("Rock Steady", "In the Mood"), The Deele ("Two Occasions"), Johnny Gill ("My My My"), After 7 ("Ready or Not"), The Boys ("Dial My Heart"), Damian Dame ("Right Down to It") and Sheena Easton.
In 1989, Edmonds co-founded LaFace Records with Reid. Three of the label's early artists, TLC, Usher, and Toni Braxton, were very successful. TLC's second album CrazySexyCool, for which he wrote and produced some of the hits, became the best-selling album of all time by an American girl group. Under his direction, TLC sold more than 60 million albums worldwide, and a combined total of 75 million records. Toni Braxton's first two albums, Toni Braxton (1993) and Secrets (1996), for which he wrote the majority of the songs, went on to sell a combined total of over 10 million copies in America alone.
Babyface helped form the popular late-1990s R&B group Az Yet. Edmonds also helped to mold and work with some of his then-wife Tracey Edmonds' acts, such as Jon B and producer Jon-John Robinson.
Edmonds has worked with many successful performers in contemporary music. “I’m Your Baby Tonight” (1990), produced for Whitney Houston, was Houston's introduction to R&B music and Edmonds' first No. 1 Top 40 hit in the US. He also wrote and produced Boyz II Men's 1992 "End of the Road" and 1994 "I'll Make Love to You", both of which established records for the longest stay at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He co-wrote, co-produced, and provided backing vocals on Madonna's 1994 Bedtime Stories, which featured the seven-week No. 1 hit "Take a Bow", and shared billing with Eric Clapton on the chart-topping Grammy winner "Change the World" from the Phenomenon soundtrack. He also wrote and produced the No. 1 hit "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" for Houston as well as the rest of the critically acclaimed 10 million-selling Waiting to Exhale soundtrack in 1995, which spawned additional hits for Houston, Brandy and Mary J. Blige.
Additionally, Edmonds has produced and written music for many artists including Bobby Brown, The Whispers, Pebbles, After 7, Johnny Gill, Deele, Karyn White, The Boys, Damian Dame, Tevin Campbell, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Faith Evans, Beyoncé, Diana Ross, Sheena Easton, Toni Braxton, Michael Jackson, Michael Bolton, Paula Abdul, Eric Clapton ("Change the World"), Whitney Houston, Brandy, Mary J. Blige, Tamia, Shola Ama, 3T, Sisqó, Dru Hill, Fall Out Boy, Céline Dion, Samantha Jade, Backstreet Boys, Honeyz, Katharine McPhee, Mariah Carey, Vanessa L. Williams, Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson, Chanté Moore, En Vogue, Zendaya, Kenny G, Kristinia DeBarge, Lil Wayne, Kevin Abstract, P!nk, Marc Nelson, TLC, Ariana Grande, Jessica Mauboy, Xscape, K-Ci & JoJo, NSYNC, Jordin Sparks and Phil Collins, among others. He received three consecutive Grammy Awards for Producer of the Year from 1995 to 1997.
Babyface was in the studio for about two years with Ashanti to produce her album The Declaration (2008).
He worked on the Lil Wayne album Tha Carter III (2008), on the Kanye West-produced "Comfortable". He also worked with R&B singer Monica for her sixth studio album Still Standing (2010).
In 2013, Babyface served as producer for Ariana Grande's debut album Yours Truly, producing the majority of her songs, including her second single, "Baby I".
In September 2014, Babyface collaborated with Barbra Streisand on her album Partners, performing a duet on the track "Evergreen" and background vocals for other album tracks.
Babyface also collaborated with Foxes on her second album, All I Need (2016), producing and co-writing "Scar".
In July 2016, Babyface along with Bruce Roberts and Carole Bayer Sager helped write the song "Stronger Together" sung by Jessica Sanchez. The song was played after Hillary Clinton's speech at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. The song's title is named after the slogan that the Clinton campaign used as a show of uniting behind the Democratic nominee. The song was one of the top trending songs on Shazam that week. The song was widely perceived as positive by the listeners, and received praise by celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian.
Acting career and film producing
In 1994, he appeared and performed on an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210 entitled "Mr. Walsh Goes to Washington (Part 2)".
In the mid-1990s, Edmonds and his then-wife Tracey Edmonds expanded into the business of motion pictures. Upon setting up Edmonds Entertainment Group, the company producing films such as Soul Food (1997), Josie and the Pussycats (2001), and also the soundtrack for the film The Prince of Egypt (1998), which included contributions from numerous artists, including Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. They also executive produced the BET reality series College Hill (2004-2009). Edmonds also worked with David Foster to compose "The Power of the Dream", the official song of the 1996 Summer Olympics, performed by superstar Céline Dion. Linda Thompson provided the lyrics.
Babyface also participated as a duet partner on the Fox reality show Celebrity Duets (2006).
He was portrayed by Wesley Jonathan in the 2015 Lifetime biopic Whitney and is portrayed by actor Gavin Houston in the Lifetime biopic based on Toni Braxton entitled Un-Break My Heart, which premiered on the network in early 2016.
On August 30, 2016, Babyface was revealed as one of the celebrities who will compete on season 23 of Dancing with the Stars. He was partnered with professional dancer Allison Holker. He and Holker were eliminated on the fourth week of competition and finished in 11th place along with Vanilla Ice and Witney Carson.
Soda Pop Records
Edmonds founded his record label Soda Pop Records in 2009. Since founding the label he has signed R&B icons K-Ci & JoJo, releasing their first album for the label entitled My Brother's Keeper. In 2013 Babyface secured a distribution deal with E1 Music for the label.
Personal life
Babyface married his first wife, Denise during his young adult years. In 1990, Babyface met Tracey Edmonds when she auditioned for the music video for his song "Whip Appeal". They married on September 5, 1992, and have two sons, Brandon and Dylan. On January 7, 2005, Tracey filed for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court, citing irreconcilable differences. In October 2005, Babyface and Tracey announced that they were ending their marriage of thirteen years.
In 2007, Babyface began dating his backup dancer Nicole "Niko" Pantenburg (former backup dancer for and personal friend of Janet Jackson). Babyface and Pantenburg have a daughter born in 2008. The pair married on May 17, 2014.
In 2015, Babyface donated money to the presidential campaign of Republican Senator Marco Rubio.
Impact
In 1999, a 25-mile (40 km) stretch of Interstate 65 that runs through Indianapolis was renamed the Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds Highway.
Babyface was placed at number 20 on NME's "50 of the Greatest Producers Ever" list. NME wrote of his impact:
"One of the founding fathers of all the best bits of modern US R&B. And so you can't hate him if some of the schlock can be traced back to him also. Babyface was a pioneer of New Jack Swing in the 80s, before setting up LaFace with old mucker Antonio 'LA' Reid to give the world TLC, Usher and Toni Braxton under their guiding hand. There's barely a prominent artist in the genre he hasn't worked with, and as a result he's clocked up a mammoth 26 R&B number ones."

The Everly Brothers - Gone, Gone, Gone (Warner Brothers Records - 5478)
Don (b. Isaac Donald Everly, 1 February 1937, Brownie, Kentucky, USA) and Phil (b. Phillip Everly, 19 January 1939, Chicago, Illinois, USA), the world's most famous rock 'n' roll duo, had already experienced a full career before their first record, "Bye Bye Love', was released. As sons of popular country artists Ike and Margaret, they were pushed into the limelight from an early age. They regularly appeared on their parents" radio shows throughout the 40s and accompanied them on many tours. In the mid-50s, as rockabilly was evolving into rock 'n' roll, the boys moved to Nashville, the mecca for such music. In 1957 they were given a Felice and Boudleaux Bryant song that was finding difficulty being placed. They took "Bye Bye Love' and made it their own; it narrowly missed the US number 1 position and reached number 6 in the UK. The brothers then embarked on a career that made them second only to Elvis Presley in the rock 'n' roll popularity stakes.
They quickly followed this initial success with more irresistible Bryant songs, "Wake Up Little Susie", "All I Have To Do Is Dream", "Bird Dog", "Problems", "So Sad" and the beautiful "Devoted To You". The brothers were supremely confident live performers, both with their trademark Gibson Dove and later, black J50 guitars. By the end of the 50s they were the world's number 1 vocal group. Amazingly, their career gained further momentum when, after signing with the newly formed Warner Brothers Records for $1 million, they delivered a song that was catalogued WB1. This historical debut was the superlative "Cathy's Clown", written by Don. No Everly record had sounded like this before; the echo-laden production and the treble-loaded harmonies ensured that it stayed at number 1 in the USA for five weeks. The brothers continued to release immaculate records; many of them reached the US Top 10, although in England their success was even greater, with two further number 1 hits during 1961. Again the echo and treble dominated in two more classics, "Walk Right Back" and a fast-paced reworking of the former Bing Crosby hit "Temptation." Don became dependent on drugs, and the pressures from constant touring and recording began to show; during one historic night at London's East Ham Granada, England, a nervous Phil performed solo. The standard "food poisoning/exhaustion" excuse was used. What was not known by the doting fans was that Don had attempted a suicidal drug overdose twice in 48 hours. Phil completed the tour solo. Don's addiction continued for another three years, although they were able to work during part of this time.
The advent of the beat boom pushed the brothers out of the spotlight and while they continued to make hit records, none approached their previous achievements. The decline was briefly halted in 1965 with two excellent major UK hits, "The Price Of Love" and "Love Is Strange". The former, a striking chart-topper, recalled their early Warner sound, while the latter harked back even earlier, with a naïve but infectious call-and-answer spoken segment. In 1966 they released Two Yanks In England, a strong album that contained eight songs by Nash/Clarke/Hicks of the Hollies; surprisingly, the album failed to chart. The duo were recognized only for their superb singles, and many of their albums were less well-received. Stories We Could Tell, recorded with an array of guest players, threatened to extend their market into the rock mainstream, but it was not to be. After a few years of declining fortunes and arrival at the supper-club circuit, the brothers parted acrimoniously. Following a show at Knotts Berry Farm, California, in 1973, during which a drunken Don had insulted Phil, the latter walked off, smashed one of his beloved Gibsons and vowed, "I will never get on a stage with that man again". The only time they met over the next 10 years was at their father's funeral.
In 1986 they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and the following year Phil gave Don a pound of gold and a handmade guitar for his 50th birthday. They now perform regularly together, with no pressure from record companies. Don lives quietly in Nashville and tours with his brother for a few months every year. The Everly Brothers" influence on a generation of pop and rock artists is inestimable; they set a standard for close harmony singing that has rarely been bettered and is still used as a blueprint for many of today's harmony vocalists. They were elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.  ~http://www.cmt.com/artists/az/everly_...
