The Layout of a Medieval Abbey
Abbeys were a striking feature of medieval urban and rural landscapes. Their layout and architecture reflected their purpose as cut-off monastic retreats which, conversely, also served and inspired their local communities. Although evolving over the centuries, many features of abbeys became standard, such as the main church, cloister, chapter house, refectory, library, calefectory, and dormitories.

The ruins of Whitby Abbey in North Yorkshire, England, completed by drone lighting.
📷 DRIFT / Cyberdrone
NOTE:
Whitby Abbey was a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey.
The abbey church was situated overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby in North Yorkshire, England, a centre of the medieval Northumbrian kingdom.
The abbey and its possessions were confiscated by the crown under Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries between 1536 and 1545.

The beautiful Tintern Abbey in the southeast corner of Wales. It was founded by the Cistercians in 1131. The monks did well for themselves, and in the mid-13th century started building an impressive Gothic church.
The abbey survived to 1536, when it and other monasteries were taken over by King Henry VIII’s government. Over the following centuries it gradually fell into ruin, but it is now preserved by Cadw.
You can walk around the remains of the abbey, which are still amazing, although some spots are blocked off because of the danger of falling stones. Besides the church, there is a lot to explore around the abbey’s grounds. I like that the monks even had a warming house!

This is the beautiful Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey in northern France. According to Le Centre des monuments nationaux (CMN), in June 1811, the abbey was made into a “central house of detention” by decree of Napoleon. Though this decree was considered to be sacrilegious, it actually saved the ancient and historic abbey from demolition.
It remained a prison until 1863 and was classified officially as a historical monument in 1874.

I found the cat @jordan-the-pious was struggling with. ^.^ It keeps moving around so I can't get a good picture right now. Very cute though, I think. I'm unsure if the infirmary section of the temple is a good place to keep a pet (on account of the more um... Contagiously ill people there with me) or if it'll even be okay to keep the cat considering that some of the people here have a bit of a discomfort with them ^^;
It seems to have sort of gotten comfortable with me for now though? We're sat in a cloister near the entrance (it's kneading the wool on my leg... It hurts a little, but it's cute...) I have ah... Hm. I haveeee... Important studying of these scrolls to do here. So I can stay here for a while unless the weather turns or it decides to leave, if anybody wants to take this cat off our hands? I would be very happy if I could find a home for it! I can't exactly keep it for long, though, like I said.
I don't know the cat's gender but it's a black cat - a little scruffy, very chatty. Tongue covered in tiny hooks that keep getting stuck on my wool. I think used to humans? Unless it's not counting me as a human. Then all of this fuss about housing it with a human would be terribly embarrassing...
