Katsu Hamanaka (1895 - 1982) was famous for his lacquer work. He was born in 1895 on the island of Hokkaido in Japan.
He began his training in applied arts, painting and interior design, in Tokyo, in particular alongside Katsutaro Yamazaki
Hamanaka left Japan to settle in Paris in 1924.. If until now he practiced lacquer using a more traditional technical approach, in the Japanese way, he modified his art working with the lacquer master Seizo Sugawara.
His meeting with the master from Switzerland, Jean Dunand, is a highlight of his career. Emblematic figure in the art of lacquer, Dunand was indeed considered the best masters in the field.
From the end of the 1920s, Hamanaka regularly appeared at major events, such as the Salon des Artistes Indépendants, the Salon d'Automne.
